gri d s intro to design & built environment ryan leigh roark I began this exercise by developing an abstract grid from an elevation.

A wooden dowel face was made from this abstraction. From this base, I built out extending lines and formed connection. The goal was to explore the idea of volume and how space can be created from almost nothing.

p oi nt l i ne p lane foundations studio 1 charles rudolph In this first exercise, I explored the idea of abstraction through multiple mediums. I began with photography for the broad concepts of point, line, and plane. I then translated the images to sketches, focusing on the iteration of the designs. This then lead to a model based upon the combination of the sketches. The model is meant to abstract volume and create the suggestion of space from it.

s i te p lan t hreshol d foundations studio 1 charles rudolph In this exercise, I went into what a site true is and what it can hold for the purposes for our designs. I began with a site made of a specific amount of cardboard “Earth layers.” I then excavated into the site to develop space into the ground. I then took the pieces removed to build upward. The goal was to create a park structutre with small and large gathering spaces. My main focus was on utilizing the undground spaces for more private, small gatherings while using the open, elevated spaces for larger, public gatherings.

o ccu piab l e w a lls foundations studio 1 charles rudolph In this exercise, I went into the process of building on an existing site and how to build within a defined space. I were assigned to make an appartment complex for two visiting professors. My focus was on giving each professor an opportunity for interaction but also privacy. I also want to highlight the movement between the two appartments. Outside entrances allow for them to enter their living quarters from each direction.

A central stairwell allows for each professor to enter each floor of the opposite appartement while also having the option to stay in their own space.
