Looking forward: preparing for the next century of service.

As we mark our centennial anniversary, a few phrases come to mind that have come to define Anderson University as we look ahead: Real Life. Transformed. Christian Spiritual Formation. Second Century of Service.

We concluded our centennial celebrations with a wonderful Homecoming weekend.

Steven Curtis ’84 and Mary Beth Chapman ’84 shared an amazing two-hour concert and worship service. Kathy and I were blessed to host them for a lunch at our house with two other couples and get to know the Christ-followers behind the record labels and books. They are living examples of “Real Life.

HOMECOMING 2017

Anderson University wrapped up its centennial anniversary celebration at Homecoming Oct. 13-14. The new Affinity Breakfast on Saturday morning drew many alums, as did the Steven Curtis Chapman concert on Saturday night. The event closed with fireworks at the football stadium. Next year’s Homecoming is scheduled for Sept. 28-29, 2018.

ART AND RELIGION Marc Chagall’s work to be on exhibit in York Galleries

The work of Holocaust-era artist Marc Chagall (1877-1985) is coming to York Galleries this January. Professor Tai Lipan, Dr. Samantha Miller, and Dr. David Murphy are working together on the programming for the exhibit, titled “Marc Chagall and the Bible.”

Chagall was an influential Jewish artist who instilled Old Testament themes in much of his work. Throughout his career he produced paintings, etchings, lithographs, illustrations, murals, and stained glass windows. The exhibit includes 55 of Chagall’s etchings and lithographs.

Lipan hailed the opportunity to show Chagall’s work as important for more than just the art department. Lipan, the director of university galleries at AU,

explained that the gallery is partnering with the departments of religious studies and history for this exhibit. As an aspect of this partnership Dr. David Murphy will give a gallery talk on Feb. 9, and Bible classes will be brought in to view the exhibit.

“I’m hoping that we can all see how, through art, you can understand more about the cultural and historical context, and also the religious aspects,” Lipan explained. “Art can help us understand more about these biblical themes, and I think the visual arts can occupy certain spaces and say what other mediums can’t always say.”

Chagall’s work is colorful and imaginative. Lipan described it as “decorative enough that a lot of people

outside of the art world know his work.”

Chagall did much of his work at the same time as Picasso. His life spanned between World War I and World War II, so the gallery will bring in programming to explore that context of Chagall’s work, as well as information about other Jewish artists at the time.

Among this programming is a gallery talk by Dr. Deidre Dempsey of Marquette University, an Old Testament and ancient languages scholar. Dempsey’s gallery talk will take place on Jan. 26, 2018, from 7-8 p.m. in York Galleries.

FIVE RAVENS ADDED TO THE HALL OF FAME Anderson University’s Department of Athletics honored five former Raven athletes during Homecoming Oct. 13-14, 2017, by inducting them into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The team advanced to the NAIA II national playoffs and won Hoosier-Buckeye Collegiate Conference championships in 1980 and 1981.

Rachel Miller BA ’02 Miller was a two-time team MVP and two-time all-conference selection in women’s basketball. She holds six school records, including career (860) and season (323) marks for rebounds. She ranks second all-time in career points (1,341) and ranks in the top 10 in 34 different categories.

Jeff Evrard BA ’82 Evrard was an All-American, all-district, and all-conference performer in football and track and field. He was the football team’s leading tackler as a junior, with 119 tackles, ranking eighth in most tackles in a season of all-time. Evrard was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American that season. He also held the school’s record in the shot put for 17 years. He still ranks sixth on the school’s all-time list with a throw of 51-2.25.

Kevin Donley BA ’73 Donley played football for AU and launched his football coaching career at the university. He spent two seasons as offensive coordinator before being named head coach in 1978. At 26, he was the youngest head coach in the nation at any level and compiled a 30-9 overall record over four seasons. In 1981, he led the Ravens to a 9-2 record.

Clifford Goss ’99 Goss was an AU track and field All-American. He won honors in 1995 on the 4x400 relay team and was twice an All-American in 1996, repeating in the 4x400 and adding the 4x100 relay. During his time at AU, he set school

Steve “Doc” Risinger BA ’74 Risinger, longtime trainer and head of the athletic training program, crafted a superlative career in the field of sports medicine over his 42 years at Anderson University. In the summer of 2000, the National Athletic Trainer’s Association selected Risinger the nation’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer.

Among other prestigious honors, Risinger was presented the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1999, the highest honor bestowed upon citizens of Indiana.

In “Outre-Mer: A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea,” American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Since then, the quote has been repeated so often, barely can a person talk about music without referencing Longfellow’s words.

Indeed, music does seem to have the power to express a depth of emotion and unity of spirit.

Certainly the Church of God experienced that unity as the affiliation came into existence around 1881, and subsequently Anderson Bible Training School in 1917. Although music’s sister language, drama, was not given formal status on the Anderson University campus until later, it too illuminates humanity’s journey of self-discovery, faith in God, and unity of spirit.

Music and drama became an invaluable source of inspiration, hard work, and lifechanging opportunity for students at AU, particularly from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s. Standing at the helm were three equally invaluable leaders: Dr. Dale Bengtson BS ’57, Dr. James Rouintree, and Robert Smith BA ’53. These three men arrived on campus armed with the determination to provide the best music and drama experiences possible while also reflecting AU’s Christian culture and institutional goals.

IN THE BEGINNING...

Of the three, Bengtson arrived first, in 1960, initially as instructor and conductor, then department chair, and finally dean of the school. During his tenure, Bengtson clearly met the challenge to develop a comprehensive program in choral, solo, and instrumental music. Adding courses, faculty, and performance engagements, and improving facilities all leveraged the department for national accreditation. Bengtson also inaugurated the Candles and Carols program in 1965, which continues today.

Graduates from AU’s music program reads like a veritable “Who’s Who” among musical greats — Bill and Gloria Gaither, Sandi Patty, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Lloyd ANDERSON UNIVERSITY Alumni Magazine, Winter 2017

Larson, Jay Rouse, and Jon McLaughlin. Richard Stillwell sang baritone with the Met. Larry Brownlee contracts with the Metropolitan Opera Company. Not to mention the many other graduates who have gone on to experience successful music careers in education and pastoral leadership.

Still, Bengtson claims the best students are “ALL my students. I loved my students. They all have been successful, and they helped me fulfill my calling.”

One of those students was Todd Braschler BA ’84.

After graduating with a degree in music education and voice performance, Braschler served for 13 years as a music pastor at Highland Park Community Church in Casper, Wyoming.

During his tenure there, Braschler directed many seasonal productions containing the Gospel message.

While serving in other pastoral and executive roles, Braschler also founded Todd Braschler Ministries in 2001 and continues to speak, teach, hold retreats, and perform, all within a Gospel framework.

“Without my experiences in music and drama at Anderson, my ministry would not have been as effective,” said Braschler.

“I learned about the technical aspects, I learned all about putting a production together, and of course the music side was invaluable.

“Bengtson, Doc [Eugene] Miller, and Greta Dominic pulled the best out of their students. They saw much more in us than we could ever see.”

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND DRAMA Dr. James Rouintree and Robert Smith both arrived on campus in 1969 with equally daunting challenges. Rouintree was tasked to build the instrumental program; Smith was hired as director of drama. While growing their respective departments through student involvement, they also carried tremendously heavy teaching loads, primarily preparing students for careers in education. Given their indefatigable energy and commitment, one might say they single-handedly built their areas into the renowned programs we continue to enjoy today, although both quickly pay tribute to other professors and community leaders who helped lead the way.

Stanton Falling BA ’77 was one of Rouintree’s students who studied the French horn. He performed with the Wind Ensemble, the Anderson Symphony, and the AU student brass and woodwind quintets. He also played in the orchestra for musicals all four years. After graduate school, Falling made his way to Germany, where he has lived and played ever since.

Currently, the AU graduate is in his 35th year with the Hessen State Theatre in Wiesbaden, Germany.

“The road to a life of performing with a professional orchestra is a long one,” said Falling. Anderson’s “woodwind and brass quintets were some of the best ensembles I have ever played in. Dr. Rouintree, Ken Austin, and Fred Ehnes mentored us and gave us every opportunity to grow as young musicians.”

Rhonda Rothman Hamm BA ’83 and Carol Knarr Gebert BA ’85 were heavily involved in drama and musicals during their student tenures at Anderson. Smith describes Hamm as his “definitive Eliza” in the 1980’s production of “My Fair Lady.”

Hamm describes her time at AU as “blessed. The bonds that were formed when we did musicals together were priceless. I spent a lot of time in Byrum Hall and loved every bit of it.” After graduation, Hamm became a music teacher and continues in that role today.

Gebert, an elementary education major who took a children’s theatre course with Smith, feels fortunate to have attended “a college that was willing to put non-theatre majors on stage in lead roles.” She went on to Arizona State University and obtained her MFA in Children’s Theatre. Today, Gebert teaches dual credit theatre and speech at Jay County High School, where her thespian troupe is presently ranked 8th in the state of Indiana.

UNFORGETTABLE TOURS Ask just about any student or professor about their participation in a music or drama tour, and they very quickly recall a story.

Smith highlights one of countless performances of Christ in the Concrete City; Bengtson reflects on the 1973 Choir Symposium in Austria, when all five choirs sang in Vienna’s Dominikanerkirche (The Church of our Living Lord) Cathedral.

Rouintree recounts the 1998 Wind Ensemble performance at Carnegie Hall as his “grand exit.”

These stories create a solidarity of shared experiences through long days, meager finances, and oftentimes unreliable transportation, but also an incredible joy and sense of place in the world.

ENCORE Although Bengtson and Smith retired in 1995 and Rouintree in 1998, all three remain closely connected to AU in meaningful ways. Whether in front or behind the scenes, their trailblazing efforts forged in the past or their stewardship extended into today, these three men spoke a language that remains both universal and timeless for this institution and the students who attend. Their stories, merged with our own, testify to the power of the arts and faith that can transform the human spirit.

Following God’s Call Teresa (White) Roberts BA ’09 is living out God’s calling on her life. She and her husband, David, have been spreading the Word through mission work since 2014.

Roberts’ family has a tradition of attending Anderson University, and while she considered breaking the mold, she eventually chose AU, too. Her fondest memories as a student involve Tri-S. She traveled to Romania twice and made friendships that have lasted over the last ten years.

Before she and David married, they both felt a calling for mission work. Even after getting married they continued to feel God leading them to missions of some sort.

They eventually found the organization Urbana Missions Conference, which Teresa (White) Roberts with her second grade class in Honduras. introduced them to Cornerstone Foundation two weeks. It seemed as if everything was falling into place. in Honduras.

Alumni Profile Marleta (Miller) Black BS ’86

Tri-S launched alum’s worldwide adventure Marleta (Miller) Black BS ’86 believes she was born with a hunger for travel. By the time she was a student at Anderson University, she was also ready to get out of the town she had grown up in — Anderson, Ind., so it may come as no surprise that she found every opportunity she could as a college student to travel. By the time she graduated, she had been to 18 different countries.

Many of the countries Black visited were with music groups representing the university. Her first trip was the summer after freshman year. She sang with an alumni choir directed by David Coolidge BS ’57 on a trip to 13 countries in Europe and Africa. While in Africa, they were able to experience the food and songs of a Kenyan village and see Maasai warriors tend their cattle. In Germany, they sang in the Cologne Cathedral.

She enjoyed tasting the German pastries and tortes.

The next summer, Black traveled with a Tri-S group to Australia to work and help run a Vacation Bible School. She loved the natural environment and the wildlife in Australia.

On this trip, she met Phil Black. They later married, had three children, and until recently, lived in Australia.

In the middle of her junior year, Black joined another music tour to Europe. Led by Jarmo Kormu BA ’83, MDiv ’86 of Finland and Brent Henderson ’86, the group toured Finland, performing for 10 days. While there, they experienced an outdoor sauna and dunked “in the ice water afterward in 40-below weather.”

tour led by Coolidge to Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea, including the Portuguese territory of Macao. She said her favorite memories included “dress tailor shopping in Korea, shopping in Japanese department stores for china, and eating Peking duck in Hong Kong.”

Black has continued to travel, mostly in the South Pacific and Asia — Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu, Mexico, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands. Having exposed herself to so many cultures, she said “seeing the world from others’ perspectives is vital. We are all one with many faces. Traveling helps you have a healthier world view with less fear of the unknown.”

Graduating from AU with a degree in computer science, Black worked in the IT industry for 16 years. She completed her Masters of Divinity, as well as graduate studies in psychology, and worked as a consultant for the Australian Church of God and small businesses. Starting in 2011, Black worked as a registered psychologist in Australia counseling unemployed clients. She soon became the national general manager of the clinical health team.

Before her family’s move to the states, Black lived in Australia for nearly 30 years. “I loved Australia’s holistic schooling [which included] social development and good student citizenship and contribution, and an emphasis on sport, art, and dance.”

Black is now a business and life coach in Florida. “I hope to use my coaching and career expertise to help small businesses, churches, and corporate clients to focus on strengthening their culture, leadership, and communication skills,” she explains. —faith sayles

CLASS NOTES Robert Moody, Sr., BA writes, “In April 2008, I began serving the Fairbury First Church of God as the associate pastor with my son, Kerry, who is the senior pastor. This has been a rough year (2017) for Sharon and I. Our oldest son, Brian, was hospitalized on March 1 and subsequently diagnosed with cancer. Brian died on March 25, 2017. We have been dealing with the loss and the many ‘firsts’ of events we are going through without him. Prayer has been the key to our getting through this time. Kerry did the memorial service for us in Fairbury, Neb., and his younger brother, R.W. Moody, Jr., did the memorial service in Lansing, Mich.”

Frederick Clemens MDiv and wife, Becky, recently spent a week in Orange Beach, Ala. Fred ministers to the Latham UMC in Huntsville, Ala., and Becky has just retired after 25 years as a speech pathologist from the Huntsville City Schools. “President Pistole’s father, Dr. Hollis Pistole, taught me that we never stop teaching. It may be by what we say, but more likely by what we do each day,” remembers Fred.

Fred’s father, the late Rev. Oral Clemens, sang in the first male quartet to travel for the college in the 1930s.

Mark DeFazio BA writes, “For the last 6 years I have been the worship leader at Church of the Foothills in Pasadena, Calif. What is interesting about this is that the Anderson College singing group I was a part of my final year sang at this church during our summer tour. As this is only a part-time position, I do also have a full-time job driving for a limo service in Los Angeles that began 3 years ago. At this job, I drive many high profile clients to and from the airport or to major events and premieres.

In the past 3 years, I have driven Bo Derek, William Shatner, Elizabeth Shue, Viola Davis, and many more. Who I am actually looking forward to driving around are the many AU alums who

Robert Brooke MDiv served as a home missionary at Wounded Knee, S.D., following seminary. He then became a career chaplain in the U.S. Army National Guard and Reserve. He served churches as a senior pastor in Colorado and Oklahoma with both the Church of God and the United Methodist Church. Mostly retired now, Bob joyfully lives with his wife, Barbara, in Oklahoma City. He serves as the pastor to shut-ins at Shartel Church of God.

The position is a four year, non-renewable term beginning January 2018 and ending December 2021. The Status of Women in the Profession Committee, a group of six, works toward encouraging and providing freedom to women in the Academy by recommending policies, practices, and developing programs for women in the profession to increase their eminence.

The Rodel Fellowship program is open by invitation only to men and women who are in publicly elected office and who are ideally between the ages of 25 and 50. Only 24 individuals were chosen to participate in the class of 2017.

Angela Moscheo Benson is the spiritual director/pastoral care director at Cumberland Heights, an internationally renowned drug and alcohol treatment facility in Tennessee.

She writes, “In addition to leading a variety of inter-religious services, I also teach a number of classes on spirituality, and I work one-on-one with patients for pastoral care. This is phenomenally challenging work, and I am humbled to have the opportunity to minister to broken people by showing them compassion, unconditional love, and support. This is God’s work, and I am grateful God allows me to share in it.”

REMEMBERING OUR FRIENDS The Rev. Paul A. Tanner BT ’46 died Oct. 23, 2017. He held pastorates in Ontario, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In 1959, he became executive director of the Division of World Service and later executive secretary of the Executive Council of the Church of God. After retirement, he served as director of development for Christian Brotherhood Hour. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from AU in 1969. He is survived by Jean (Linhart) Tanner ’44, his wife of 75 years; a son, James D. Tanner BA ’68; a daughter, Margo Sue (Tanner) Royer; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

John David Holeman MDiv ’53 died October 2, 2017. He served in WWII in the 44th Infantry Division during their campaign in France. He attended Warner Pacific College prior to completing his seminary degree at AU. He was a pastor for more than 25 years and worked for Warner Press as a sales representative from age 55 to 80. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Overholt Holeman ’49; children, Delwin Holeman, Kathleen (Holeman) Mihai BA ’76; and David Holeman ’79; sister, Lorene Fine; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary Diane Decker BA ’74 died Sept. 13, 2017. She passed quietly at home after spending a month in ICU at the Hospital. She spent her earlier years teaching in elementary schools and her later years running a store on the internet and selling handmade items in retail stores. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Alfred L. Decker ’74; her parents, Edward and Theresa Buchinski; her sister, Terri Maley; and her brother, Ed Buchinski.

Franklin D. Cleckley BA ’62 died Aug. 14, 1917, in Morgantown, W.V. He was the first black person to serve on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. He earned his law degree from the Indiana University School of Law in 1965.

He served three years as a U.S. Navy JAG officer before

attending Harvard University, where he earned his master of laws, or LLM, degree. He pursued post-graduate studies at Exeter University, in England, before joining the faculty at the WVU law school in 1969.

Glen Alan Frederick BA ’72 died Aug. 6, 2017, in Tucson, Ariz. He and his wife, Connie Kissinger Frederick BA ’71 who passed away in August 2010, were the benefactors of the Kissinger Learning Center at Anderson University. Glen and Connie were also donors for the Reardon Auditorium building project. Glen worked at Warner Press after graduation. They are survived by their daughter, Amy Frederick.

The Rev. Richard Bartlett BA ’55 died June 27, 2017. He served 59 years in pastoral ministry with his wife of 63 years, Maxine (Tolles). His ministry took him to Saskatchewan, Alberta, Indiana, and Michigan. His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2015. They are survived by their daughter, Rebecca (Bartlett) Schafer ’75; sons, Rodney Bartlett and Dennis Bartlett; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Samuel Arnold Holmes MDiv ’05 died Nov. 20, 2016. He completed his chaplain residency through St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and was a chaplain for both St. John’s and Community hospitals in Anderson. He was also the town marshal for Markleville, Indiana. Survivors include his wife, Lois (Weiland) Holmes; daughters, Teresa Nyboer, Tamera Stoakes, and Su “Bambi” Brown; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Correction: An obituary was submitted for Melvyn Cornelius that ran in the last issue of Signatures. However, it is his brother, Samuel Cornelius (also an AU alum), who actually passed away. Melvyn would like his friends to know that he is doing fine.

Will you support AU students today?

My family has a long history with Anderson University. My sister, aunts, uncles, and my grandfather all attended AU from the 1940s through the 1990s. I just had a feeling that it was the right place for me to be. It’s hard to put into words the spiritual experience that comes from walking on certain ground, but there is something special about AU’s campus.

I began my college years as a music business major before transferring to the religious studies department. I completed a degree in Bible and Religion. The professors, students, and overall environment were all significant in helping me develop into a critical thinker. The small class sizes and direct relationship with professors made Anderson University feel like a family, helping me grow and develop at a critical time in life.

I now serve as the founding pastor of a church plant in Indianapolis that is affiliated with the Church of God. The interaction of life and faith at Anderson University caused me to see the church as intrinsically connected to our communities as we serve to expand God’s Kingdom of love and grace in our world.

My dream of attending Anderson University would have been impossible — and I wouldn’t be the same person today — if it wasn’t for scholarships that provided the financial resources that gave me the opportunity to attend.
