LESSON 6

Lesson focus This exercise is a really interesting way to create a poem, using the writing students did in Lesson 4. It is a collaborative and non-confrontational approach to writing poetry that often yields unexpectedly meaningful results. As the teacher, you almost ‘conduct’ the poem, and are able to tighten or loosen your control as needed. It may seem like the poem couldn’t possibly make sense, or won’t come together - but trust the process, and just give it a go!

Activity: Class Poem Watch Video 10: Class Poem for a demonstration of this activity.

1. Spread the letters from Lesson 4 around the room and ask students to move around silently and read a selection of the letters. Play some music in the background.

2. After a while ask each student to sit next to a letter (one per student and not their own) and read it closely. Students highlight or circle evocative/emotional/descriptive sentences or phrases that they really like.

3. Explain that the students are now going to create a poem as a whole class, using text from their letters.

4. Ask if anyone has a strong phrase that could start the class poem? Listen to a few and then choose one sentence. That student stands on one side of the room.

7. The teacher scribes the poem on a laptop as they go.

8. Students perform the poem from start to finish, as the teacher you can make any swaps or changes you’d like so the poem flows.

9. Choose a couple of lines or words for the whole class to repeat/echo. Ask students to consider the volume/pitch/tempo/emotion they use.

Students perform the poem again incorporating those ideas. Give the poem a title.

10. You can stick each line in order or write up your class poem on the project wall.

Preparation for Lesson 7: Show Video 11: Time Travellers 1 to introduce the fictional scenario that will frame the final lessons of this unit.

5. Ask who has a strong finishing phrase? That student stands on the other side of the room.

6. As a class, decide and order a phrase for each student until everyone is standing in the line.

You may choose to group phrases based on similar topics/themes, or because they use the same words.
