Ald. Rossana Rodriguez, Tenants Demand Better Security After Break-Ins and Attempted Rape. Landlord Moves to Evict Tenants vow to fight back against landlord’s decision to abruptly evict families that consistently pay rent on time.
When: Monday, July 1, 2019 at 3:00PM Where: 3200 W Sunnyside Avenue, Albany Park Who: A new collective of Albany Park tenants who call themselves the Sunnyside Kedzie Tenants Union. The Autonomous Tenants Union and 33rd Ward Alderman Rossana Rodriguez will speak in support of the group. All tenants live in a building owned by George Triff of Triff Investments, LLC, a mega-landlord with a long list of code violations and a history of targeting Latinx tenants with evictions. Tenants decided to unionize in response to Triff’s negligence of their units, indifference to their physical safety, and his decision to abruptly evict families that consistently pay rent on time. What: Tenants and Ald. Rodriguez will speak out against targeted evictions and the deteriorating living conditions in the units that have already resulted in home break-ins and an attempted rape. Why: In the past few years, many of the residents in this building have suffered from unsafe units, absentee maintenance, and a lack of necessary repairs. Last Friday, tenants mailed a letter to Mr. Triff demanding he reverse his decision to evict long-time tenants and their families for requesting basic, secure and dignified living conditions after suffering break-ins and thefts. Tenants also demanded Mr. Triff provide security for all units and improve conditions in individual units. Rather than provide his tenants with safe living conditions, Mr. Triff has ignored or, seemingly, retaliated against them. The Autonomous Tenants Union (ATU) is committed to organizing for housing justice from below and to the left. We fight for an end to evictions and for community control of housing, working to defend and enforce our right to dignified housing. We believe housing is a human right, not a commodity!
