DIRECTOR’S NOTE I am writing this Director’s Note as I’m sitting with my wife on our honeymoon. We just finished talking with a waitress about how she fled from Argentina as half the Argentinian population is now officially below the poverty line. We are debriefing in our room as we look out over a Mediterranean hit by La Niña, resulting in a lack of incoming warm air/water from the Equator and one of the coldest years for Europe in roughly 40 years. This seems to be the perfect setting to consider our play. Not only all these little reminders of catastrophe (past, present, and future), but the challenge of balancing these things while looking at the woman I am meant to spend the rest of my life with. As we get older and time seems to blow by faster and faster, my wife and I are continually met with two dilemmas: experiencing personal victory while the world crumbles, or experiencing personal loss while those around us thrive. Although this isn’t directly what the play talks about, it definitely reminds me of the play. It is what we are bringing to the play as we rehearse. Practicing balance amidst chaos. We have debated for years whether or not we think the play has a “happy ending”. Of course, it’s subjective and we know that you will decide for yourself, but we sincerely hope you have a fight about it on the ride home. Those debates have been some of the most productive and enlightening conversations of our relationship and of our lives. But a few undeniable truths have conquered our conversations. The solution is not to dwell on righting the wrongdoings of the generations before you. The solution is not to dwell on what you owe the generations that follow you. The solution is not to forget the world around you in order to be with your loved ones in the present. Life is too complicated to have one lesson. It’s balance and awareness and breath. When experiencing Lungs, we would like for you to consider these things. Thank you so much for your time and attention, we know it’s expensive these days. Thank you so much to the Elevator Project and to Hector Garcia. Thank you to the Cedar Ridge Preserve and the City of Dallas for agreeing on the importance of this piece now. Thank you so much to our small group of brilliant artists that we are lucky enough to call our best friends. Enjoy!
