I can still vividly recall sitting in a black box theatre watching this play for the first time. It was sweet, creative, and a beautiful journey that a young girl embarks on to find strength within through creative expression. Bringing this story to DFW audiences is something I have been working towards for over 3 years, and I could not be more proud to tell a story that loudly celebrates female and non-binary voices both on and off stage.
Design-wise, I envisioned the audience experiencing this show through Alice’s POV. They see and hear the world as she does. By having wire props, they may disappear at certain angles, sheer fabrics convey the same effect, which all illustrates this dreamlike quality I wanted to achieve with Wonderland-where you’re never truly sure if it’s real or a dream. I wanted the sound to feel like a film score, where it’s never truly silent in Wonderland, and my husband came up with the brilliant idea of surround sound where every seat gets a unique experience. All these design elements, combined with a talented cast, came together to tell this beautiful story and I could not be more proud of this production team. Thank you to my brilliant AD Savannah, my supportive team, and all who made this possible. “We are but older children, dear.”
