Welcome Welcome to the 2024 Critical Environments Summit. We hope you enjoy this event by learning about the latest in building technologies, critical facility design, and how to best operate and maintain your facilities while engaging in interesting conversations with your peers and other industry leaders. The term “critical facilities” encompasses several types of buildings, from data centers to healthcare and life science applications. Each of these applications has specific goals, requirements, and needs – some self-imposed and many others required by governmental regulations. During this event, we will shed light on the best practices for design and maintenance that will help accomplish this myriad of goals. Throughout the summit, you will hear from industry experts and innovators who are currently developing and implementing new practices and technologies. These technologies range from automated analytics that help ensure the sustainability and reliability of your facility to new sensor technology that provides safer environments for patients and researchers. Speakers & Panel Members Matt Burnham Critical Facilities Engineering Manager ATS Critical Facilities
Matt Burnham is an industry veteran with over 23 years of experience working in roles such as application engineer and estimator. He also founded his own company, Burnham Dynamix, where he provided control engineering, design, graphics, and programming services. Initially joining ATS Waypoint, Matt transitioned to ATS Critical Facilities as the Engineering Manager, where he helps teams develop the besttailored designs, using the right products to suit customer needs. Matt takes pride in ensuring ATS provides customers with a consistent product with the highest quality possible.
Josh Cales President ATS Automation
Josh Cales joined ATS Automation as the President in June 2019. Before joining ATS, Josh spent five years as VP & GM of Alerton & Phoenix Controls, two building automation businesses for Honeywell. During that time, he worked to enhance control systems for critical environments with a specific focus on improving operating room indoor air quality. He also launched initiatives to integrate AI technologies to connect people with buildings. Josh is passionate about leveraging technology and the tools we have to make life better!
Paul Chamberlain General Manager ATS Critical Facilities
Paul Chamberlain is the General Manager for ATS Critical Facilities, which specializes in mission-critical projects like data centers. As GM, Paul leads a team that provides repeatable building management system solutions within mission-critical markets by providing best-in-class people, engineered solutions, service support, and products. With nearly two decades of experience, Paul has held various roles at ATS, including engineer, account executive, and now General Manager.
Cathrine deGuzman Account Executive ATS Automation
Cathrine has been with ATS for over 25 years. Having served as a project engineer for nine years before transitioning to a Service Account Executive, Cathrine has extensive experience with control system design, start-up, commissioning, and end-user training. Cathrine focuses on being a smart building resource for her clients while developing long-term mutually beneficial partnerships. She is an active member of WSSHE, BOMA, IFMA, Pro Shop, and the Filipino-American Construction Professionals organization.
Jon Diederich Operations Manager ATS Critical Facilities
Jon Diederich has been with ATS for over a decade, holding various roles such as project engineer, and program director for ATS Critical Facilities. Jon has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry and has over a decade working with controls. His responsibilities include managing large missioncritical construction projects throughout the United States, recruitment, training, and development of personnel, financial oversight, and providing support for account executives. Jon’s passion lies in collaborative work on critical facility projects and providing valued services for clients.
Jonah Gaffner Technical Program Manager of Controls Infrastructure Google
Jonah is a husband, father, leader, and Technical Program Manager of Controls Infrastructure across Google’s Central and West Regions. His primary roles at Google include supporting new data center construction and retrofits through technical and project management and working to continuously improve controls deployment strategy. In his spare time, you can find him going for a run or bike ride, drinking coffee with a good book in hand, hanging out with his wife and son at home, or working with his hands through various projects.

Jonathan Grove Business Development Manager ATS Inland NW Jonathan has worked in the built environment for over 16 years, the last 8 with ATS Inland NW, serving first as project manager and now as Business Development Manager. Jonathan is active in ASHRAE, serving on various committees. As a licensed Professional Engineer, Jonathan is passionate about the value analytics bring to the built environment.
Tom Harris Sr. Director of Technical Operations Stack Infrastructure
Tom Harris joined STACK in 2022 to run the data center firm’s Technical Operations team. Before joining STACK, Tom served as Microsoft’s Puget Sound Critical Environments Program Manager (CEPM), US West Regional CEPM, and Sr. Technical Program Manager. These groups worked with teams worldwide to establish Microsoft’s global operating standards for Data Centers. When not working with Data Centers, Tom spends time with his wife of 14 years and their two children.
Tyler Kee West Region Channel Manager Phoenix Controls Tyler Kee joined Phoenix Controls in 2021. Prior to Phoenix Controls, Tyler was a Business Unit Manager for a process control and industrial automation distributor. Tyler currently serves on ASHRAE TC9.10 – Laboratory Systems. Tyler holds a BSME from University of Idaho, a Master of Industrial Distribution from Texas A&M, and is a Control Systems Professional Engineer. When not working Tyler enjoys cycling and skiing with his family.
Mike Lupardus ICM BMS Program Manager Meta Mike Lupardus is a construction management professional that has dedicated his career to the mission critical environment. Mike has delivered projects at all levels in the contracting chain from subcontractor to general contractor to the owner where he is currently as the Global BMS Fusion Manager for Meta. Mike earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He went on to work for Turner Construction in Denver, CO where he began his mission critical project portfolio. Mike now manages the BMS Fusion Team for Meta where they focus on solving or implementing BMS strategies for the delivery of BMS on Meta’s data centers.
Steve Matthes Senior Facilities Engineer Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
Steve is the Senior Facilities Engineer in the Planning and Construction Department at Fred Hutch. He specializes in critical system design and operation and enjoys the challenge of upgrading existing complex facilities infrastructure systems. He has worked in the Healthcare Facilities Engineering industry since 2003, working for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 16 years and 5 years at Fred Hutch. Steve has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Iowa and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
David Rausch Critical Environment Specialist for Healthcare & Lab Spaces Phoenix Controls
David Rausch is the Phoenix Controls business development manager for Healthcare and Research Markets. As an active member and distinguished speaker of ASHRAE, he has held executive positions in TC 9.10 (Lab Systems) and was a past Chair for TC 2.2 (Plant and Animal). He is now an associate member of TC 9.6 (Healthcare) and TC 9.11 (Clean Rooms) and speaks at numerous critical environment conferences throughout the year.

Shawn Rucshner Service Manager ATS Automation
Shawn Rucshner has held many roles throughout his 15 years of experience in the HVAC controls industry, including controls technician, account executive, and service sales manager. As the Service Manager for Western and Central Washington, Shawn is responsible for the Service Sales, Account Management, Project Management, Service Technician, and Service Administration groups at ATS Automation. Shawn is an ardent advocate for ATS clients. He is passionate about customer service and satisfaction, ensuring long-term mutually beneficial partnerships are established.
George Scondras Technology Solutions Lead ATS Critical Facilities George has been with ATS for over 18 years, serving in roles such as project engineer, project manager, and now Technology Solutions Lead for ATS Critical Facilities. George has led the development of integrated offerings for wholesale data center customers and the implementation of analytics for higher-level systems analysis. George enjoys teaching and finding ways to simplify complex topics for audiences.
Eric Stacy Account Executive ATS Automation Eric Stacy is a Service Account Executive at ATS Automation. Having previously served as an operations technician, engineer, and project manager, Eric has been with ATS for over 25 years. Having hands-on experience with mechanical systems, electrical systems, controls hardware and software provides Eric a way to understand better the reality of what it takes to control, integrate, and implement an idea or sequence of operations in the real world. Eric uses this experience to work with facility management teams to accomplish their service and operational goals. Eric has a Mechanical Engineering degree and is a Certified Energy Manager.
Wesley Stanfill Senior Sales Engineer ATS Inland NW Wes is a Senior Sales Engineer for ATS and is also the Regional Vice Chair of Research Promotion for ASHRAE Region IX. He is a licensed Professional Engineer that has been in the Building Automation industry for the past 9 years and is passionate about finding long term, comprehensive solutions to problems. Outside of the office you’ll find him chasing adrenaline sports like kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
Seth Thornton Director of Facilities Engineering Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
Seth is the Director of Facilities Engineering at Fred Hutch and runs the day-to-day operations at the 16-acre campus in South Lake Union. He gets a kick out of energy conservation projects and is dedicated to the idea of maintaining the campus in such a way that it will continue to attract world class scientists from around the globe. He leads a team of 70 maintenance and engineering professionals and has watched the campus expand to 2.8 million square feet over the past 12 years. He has worked in the Healthcare Facilities Engineering industry since 1999. Seth has a Bachelor of Science in Facility Management from Ferris State University and a Master’s in Public Affairs from Mizzou.
