Ja m e s B A L DW IN James Baldwin was never afraid to challenge white America, especially when it came to Black Culture and Literature. And this time, he delivered a verbal homicide so powerful, the world is still feeling it today. James Baldwin is known for many things. His staggering prose, his wide smile and of course, dragging white America by it's teeth with his words. His 1961 book "Nobody Knows My Name" was no different. And this famed writer got hit in particular. Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" is still regarded as an American classic today, but Baldwin highlighted how the beat writer romanticized the Black struggle.Kerouac's lackluster account of a "white man disillusioned" walking past Black folks while "wishing I were a Negro," wasn't going to fly. 14

Baldwin explained that Kerouac's writing illustrates how white men believe the world revolves around them. He called it "absolute...offensive nonsense." "I would hate to be in Kerouac's shoes if he should ever be mad enough to read this aloud from the stage of Harlem's Apollo Theater," he wrote, but Baldwin's diss did more than just insult white mediocrity. Baldwin championed Black creativity separate from white norms. He unveiled an appropriation of our experiences. Even by specifying the Apollo Theater 's audience, Baldwin positioned our judgment, knowledge, and culture higher that the white institutions that deemed Kerouac a classic. After all, if white people's understanding of whiteness is based on their relationship to us and co-optation of Black experiences, quite frankly, that identity crisis isn't our problem. Baldwin reminds us that our creativity speaks for itself.

Exotic Cigars has proudly been in business for 17 years. It all began with 1 Humidor and a desire for customer satisfaction. Cigars are typically purchased to enjoy an occasion or just to celebrate life, but we wanted to create an environment that not only supplied the customer with that cigar, but gave them the tools to properly appreciate the lifestyle a cigar has to offer. We started by learning everything we could about cigars. Not only by the way they taste and smell, but how they are grown. Today, we have 8 Humidors, all pairing well with our customer service.

Ya m a c r a w H I ST O RY Gi m m e s o m e f a c t s Yamacraw was the name of the Creek Indian settlement that existed where downtown Savannah is today. Yamacraw Village is the oldest Black/Gullah Geechee. Community in Georgia. Before Savannah was called Savannah, it was known as Yamacraw Bluff. Yamacraw Village spreads from River Street to the Savannah Visitors Center, from MLK to the Viavuct. Africans, free and those in captivity, lived in Yamacraw. Savannah was set up on a ward system----Yamacraw was known as the Oglethorpe Ward, which was the edge of the city. Immigrants, such as the French, German, Irish and Scottish, all lived in Yamacraw. Yamacraw Village was made up of Black business owners and home owners- free and those in captivity. Brick houses in Yamacraw were made of Savannah Gray bricks, which are also called antique brick. Oladuah Equiano, the Father of the Slave Narratives, was a sailor and writer who visited Yamacraw. friend Musa. Before the 1900's, African's in Yamacraw spoke French, Spanish, Portuguese, German Arabic and a host of African languages, to include Gullah and English.

The oldest continuous Black Churches--Historic 1st African Baptist Church and 1st Bryan Baptist Church., were developed in Yamacraw. Barack Obama and his Presidency are connected to Yamacraw, as well as the Black Migration. Also, the concept of 40 acres and a mule was born out of Yamacarw. Take a tour with Day Clean Journey and learn more about Yamacraw, and Savannah History.

RELATIONSHIP ARTICLE: GET OUT OF YOUR BOX by Craig and Sharon Butts People are going to relate? but what happens when the relating gets stale? Often times that is when the complaining begins. You complain to your friends, your partner, strangers if they start the conversation, anyone who will listen. And if you are in a surviving relationship, that is as far as a solution goes.On the other hand, should you find yourself in a thriving or healthy relationship, you and your partner step outside the box and add a little spice. A thriving healthy relationship is when we respond to the spirit of love and carry it forward through the practice of compassion, nurturing, listening, collaboration, etc. As human beings, this is where we bring focus to our environment to uplift and strengthen our relationship. The environment includes all that surrounds you: the forest, the ocean, the animals, people your mate, the room you?re in, just to mention a few. To get out of our box, we expand our environment. This happens by doing something different. Explore each other?s hobbies together, take walks together, play games together, go on dates together. Do you see the pattern? It requires togetherness, a sharing of time and space in a way that creates connection between you and your partner. Ancient wisdom describes human beings as having five layers of experience: the environment, the physical body, the mind, the intuition and our self/ spirit, which we call the soul. If compassion and care are kindled within ourselves, they will form the basis for a deeper connection to, and care for both, others and the environment. February is the month we go above and beyond to do something special and different for our lovers. Thought: do something special for your friend the other months and keep the spice in your relationship.

Spirit- We were raised in the promise of greatness. Where are grandmothers and grandfathers not only dreamed more fiercely, their work was our safeguard, steadily towering the heights of future dreamers. They bleed a darker ribbon which we would cut at the completion of their sacrifice, a continuance of hope passed on to our keeping for protection. Their spirit is ours. And it is not for sale.
