Quite literally, the pandemic of 2020-21 has grounded us, curtailing even our ordinary travels. The simple act of crossing a state line invokes testing and quarantine. We have all, in our own ways, withheld from the richness of life to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe, treading a cautious path between work, school, home, and essential errands.

Especially in late winter, such confinement leads to a certain kind of cabin fever, a restlessness for exploration. On a recent Saturday, I drove west towards the forests of central Massachusetts. Truth be told, conditions were terrible for a road trip, and I had no particular destination in mind. Dense fog blocked views through a rain-splattered windshield. Did bright sprouts of daffodil greens jump from matted leaves and dingy snow? Nope—not yet! Even a brisk walk through the woods yielded a sobering and unexpected coincidence: a solitary gravestone, neatly surrounded by a low white fence. Through splotches of lichen, the engraving was clear: a colonial captain, age 45. Stricken by smallpox, in 1775. It was a poignant reminder that throughout history, we have lived with pandemics.

Still, it was fulfilling to be out and about. Freed for a few hours from task lists and emails, my mind turned to gratitude, and I reflected upon the curiously opposite meanings of the word grounded. We’ve been grounded, yes. But in this tumultuous year of pandemic, alongside America’s racial and political reckoning, Atrium has been so centered, so well-grounded by our constructive, affirmative values. Fully face-to face since September, we thrived and adapted at a time where many schools have struggled to open. We persevere as a deeply unified community, and have redoubled our commitment to justice, equity and inclusion. We ensure every day—amidst constantly shifting and uncertain circumstances—that Atrium students have unfettered access to delightful academic challenge. Atrium students are not just living though this strange time: they are making meaning and value of it. It is positively shaping them.

Full credit and profound gratitude goes unequivocally to our faculty. Uninterrupted face-to-face learning requires long hours, and our teachers have quietly and powerfully reinvented teaching this year. Their dedication is unparalleled, their inventiveness and resilience extraordinary. The examples are everywhere: a teeming library was converted to a traveling bookmobile that preserves a sense of excitement and discovery. With singing and violin sidelined, our music program sharply and successfully pivoted toward social justice-minded electronic composition, yielding partnerships with local musicians and a forthcoming benefit album! Teachers reinvented their schedules from the ground up to sustain deep-dive integrated projects and our signature Middle School clusters program. Teachers redesigned their classrooms and frequently packed materials for students learning at home. They’ve found ways to collaborate, and inspire each other, without ever meeting in the same room. Through all this, Atrium has collectively created a genuine sense of normalcy for children.

As I turned back towards the city late that dusky recent Saturday afternoon, I was filled with satisfaction and pride in our school.

Even as daylight faded, the clouds lifted and low sunlight washed over the forests and fields, catching countless branch tip buds in a subtle rosy glow. Spring, in fact, is coming. The pandemic is ebbing. We have, in fact, a more just and equitable future before us because we will work for it. And Atrium—rich in gratitude, joyful in spirit and habit, will become even more deeply grounded in the best of what we are, for children.

OUR RESPONSE TO A CHALLENGING YEAR

Excellence with Joy continues in all areas of our program — academics, extra curriculars, arts.

The 2019-2020 school year will certainly be one that we remember and that will go down in history due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At Atrium and everywhere it was certainly not the year we had anticipated. Following an executive order from Governor Baker, Atrium School – along with every other school in the state – closed its doors to in person learning on March 13, 2020 and pivoted to Atrium From Afar, our home-based distance learning program. All classes from this time forward were taught remotely using various digital platforms.

• A flexible and robust hybrid model of teaching and learning in person and at a distance.

• A plan to sustain faculty to meet the demands placed upon them through this time.

• A broad comprehensive financial plan to fold short-term recovery into a longer range plan for Atrium’s financial sustainability.

• A renewed plan to sustain and unify our community even at a distance.

• A plan to support and retain families whose enrollment might have been threatened.

Even before the close of the 2019-2020 school year, scenario planning was taking place for the return to school in the fall. We are extremely fortunate to have members of our community who are experts in the fields of medicine, and public health, who were thought partners with the September Scenarios Task Force. Together with support from the Board they planned a safe return of students to their classrooms for the fall. At the time of this writing, students are on winter break and we have just completed more than 100 days of face-to-face learning.

Classes and extracurricular activities were redesigned for remote learning. Atrium students Pre-K to Grade 8 remained focused and engaged through the end of the school year. Teachers learned how to develop lessons to cover all areas of study. And teachers, students and parents learned together how to hold classes virtually. Faculty sustained Atrium culture and community, while also ensuring the physical and emotional needs of every student were met.

The pandemic is of course, ever present, but we are doing much more than coping here at Atrium. Whether it is the triumphant return of Pizza Thursday, the new six-pod Middle School model, budding engineers in 4th and 5th grade creating games for Pre-K and K students to play, or maximizing our outdoor space for teaching, learning and fun, inside every classroom there are visible signs of the deep learning and the spirit of community.

Every area of the school community was touched, and resourcefulness and resiliency became a way of life. With the shared goal of keeping students engaged in learning and active, the community embraced new challenges and opportunities, overcoming limitations and challenges of technology and isolation to stay connected with one another and sustain the joy of learning and community.

We are deeply grateful to our Board, numerous task force groups, faculty and staff and the parent community who amidst great uncertainty stood together as one School.

Here are the events, happenings, and recognitions that shaped our community throughout the school year.

February Faculty and staff meet to begin 26 preparations for a possible school closing.

Every facet of Atrium’s daily operations was examined, and then re-examined by dedicated teams for health and wellness, facilities, academics, and the possibility of remote learning. While keeping the pulse on the cyclone of news and updates, Atrium established protocols and policies for the uncertain year ahead.

FOUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

To fully realize “Excellence with Joy” and instill all Atrium students with the four interconnected capacities, our Strategic Plan prioritizes these objectives: Developing Visionary Problem-Solving Citizens Invest in faculty growth, evaluation, and compensation. Amplify, strengthen, and align curriculum across all grades and disciplines, and articulate fresh benchmarks.

Review and strengthen academic and extracurricular programs. Enrich and expand Atrium’s programs in order to enhance students’ experience both during and beyond the school day.

Deepening our School’s Culture of Equity and Empowering Students to be Active Inclusive Leaders.

Accelerate and amplify Atrium’s overall commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice. Increase the diversity of Atrium faculty and staff, ensuring full support for faculty and staff, students, and families of color. Ensure that Atrium’s PreK through Grade 8 curriculum and program richly include multiple perspectives and address complex matters of equity and justice.

How do leaders, teachers, students and families shape a culture that supports playful pedagogy?

Working with Glasgow Group we have begun a Climate Study that will inform the direction and priorities for Atrium's DEI work moving forward.

Throughout Atrium we have begun to further shape curriculum, school culture and staffing so that Atrium visibly demonstrates our commitment to the needs of all Atrium community members, cultivating open-minded, strong-hearted graduates who actively advance justice and equity in their lives and beyond Atrium.

Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO) film crew and staff visited and filmed an 8th grade class taught by Paul. The film is being used by FHAO as a lesson to model effective instruction in Facing History’s compelling, justice-driven curriculum. This particular film focuses on students preparing to learn about the Holocaust from direct testimonials from survivors’ children.

The plan is our road map that prioritizes the educational needs for children in our world today and tomorrow.

Our progressive roots continue to ground us in this work.

We believe and recognize that our separate heritages, beliefs, and choices of expression help define us as individuals, and that our commitment to learning about one another and the larger world unites us as a community.

Anti-bias education is an approach to teaching and learning that supports respecting and embracing differences and acting against bias and unfairness. The overarching goal is to create a climate and culture with the community where each child meaningfully forms a strong and positive identity and achieves their fullest potential.

We have much work ahead. Our school community must create a safe, accessible, and fully inclusive community for all. We recognize that the work we are doing every day in our classrooms, the acceleration of professional development that promotes multiple perspectives and addresses open complex discussions on matters of equity and racial justice is not enough.

We acknowledge that it takes ongoing and consistent efforts to be an anti-racist institution. This is the work of all the community and the steps to obtain our larger goals around diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice are the responsibility of the community.

How do we get there and what are we doing differently to ensure this critical work happens? In recent months we have accessed and recalibrated the strategic plan and reprioritized objectives.

We check ourselves regularly and ask - how do we foster an appreciation for diversity and inclusion?

How do we teach young children respect for individuals and community? How do we encourage them to make a difference and understand someone else’s experience?

It begins with learning about themselves and recognizing how we are the same and different.

It begins in our early grades and progresses through Grade 8.

In Art in PreK, K and Grade 1 students create their self-portraits. And in 8th grade just weeks before graduation students create a painting of their eyes. Taking time to explore identity and diversity throughout their journey at Atrium is essential for students to understand empathy and to gain a global perspective. Conversations about similarities and differences gives students the tools to build closer communities in their classroom, across grades, the school, and their greater communities.

• The school with guidance from board and Diversity Committee has hired The Glasgow Group to do a DEI Whole School Audit. Reviewing and analyzing all areas of the school including, key documents related to DEI, associations and mission alignment, and key demographics. The study includes input from the entire community: students, faculty, parents, and alumni.

Following the audit, The Glasgow Group will provide Atrium with an assessment of where we are on the continuum of inclusive pedagogy. It will include areas of strength and recommendations for improvement in all areas of the community.

We will share results and next steps with the community.

It's our joy and responsibility to help our students dream of a safer, fairer, better future, and that begins with the work faculty and staff do in our own lives. These are just a few examples of initiatives and programs designed to embrace and empower our community. As students, families, and faculty and staff live and learn together at Atrium we must all engage in these efforts – and we must recognize that these efforts are a lifelong commitment.

Atrium School is extremely fortunate to have a continually active family community that provides support to the school. Every year parent volunteers donate hundreds of hours of their time for the benefit of our students and faculty.
