As Charlotte and the surrounding area continues to grow, so does the demand for specialized pediatric care. Your generosity fuels our mission to meet this growing need and provide exceptional care for critically ill children and their families.

The Ricky Hendrick Centers for Intensive Care at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital is dedicated to expanding its facilities to meet the growing demand for pediatric intensive care services in our community. Our expansion project is not just about adding more beds; it's about expanding hope, comfort, and healing for countless families in our community.

Your Philanthropy at Work The PICU serves about 1,400 patients annually and is expected to increase by an estimated 50% and continue to rise. The expansion allows the PICU to grow from 10 to 24 beds to accommodate the most critically ill and injured children.

Levine Children’s Hospital PICU is operating within the top 95th percentile, compared to a cohort of 87 others, with mortality and length of stay shorter than predicted.

The Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is currently ranked #8 in the country by U.S. News and World Report as a Best Children's Hospital for Cardiology and Heart Surgery . This unit will expand from 10 to 20 beds.

The Ricky Hendrick Centers for Intensive Care donor acknowledgment wall on the 6th floor Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit will endure as a lasting tribute to your philanthropy.

With the expansion to the 9th floor, we will extend this recognition to the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. An additional dedicated donor recognition area will be established within the family waiting area to serve as a constant reminder of the profound impact your contribution has had on the lives of countless children and families in our care.

PICU Expansion: Facility Enhancements and Technological Advancements The newly expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) will relocate from the 6th to the 9th floor at Levine Children’s Hospital, providing a more spacious and enhanced environment for our patients and staff. Features include expanded family lounge areas, dedicated spaces for relaxation, and full bathrooms in each patient room to ensure utmost convenience and dignity for families.

The design focuses on supporting our most complex and critical care children. It offers a layout that supports the visibility of every patient, easy access to patients, and care with the most advanced technology available.

This includes advanced medical equipment to support lung, heart, brain, and other body functions, including the region's only pediatric heart and lung bypass and continuous renal replacement therapy machines.

Your initial commitment to The Ricky Hendrick Centers for Intensive Care set the groundwork to make this expansion project possible. We are deeply honored to continue Ricky’s legacy and for your valued partnership.

Your philanthropy in honor of Dr. Jerry M. Petty and his late wife Audrey is a critical piece of preparing the next generations of spine surgeons. Your gift has already helped recruit renowned professors and traveling physicians, and has sent three residents across the country to learn.

Because of your partnership Dr. Domagoj Coric, the inaugural holder of the Dr. Jerry and Audrey Petty Endowed Professorship in Spine Surgery, has equipped Orthopaedic Surgery Residents with opportunities to learn about spinal surgery they would have otherwise not received. Thank you for your remarkable generosity and the trust you place in our programs. Since establishment, the Professorship funded several important initiatives, including:

Hosting three guests to teach Orthopaedic Surgery Residents Dr. Michael Groff, Vice Chair of Neurosurgery, Director of Spinal Neurosurgery, and Co-Director of Comprehensive Spine Surgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital visited Atrium Health in 2023. Dr. Groff spent time with residents in a teaching case conference and shared his career advice on spine surgery. Dr. Groff also had small group meetings about how to develop a multidisciplinary spine program.

Dr. Cheol Park and Dr. John Choi, endoscopic spine surgeons from South Korea and Australia, respectively, visited as part of a debut of a surgical spine technique Dr. Vince Rossi is making in Charlotte. Drs. Park and Choi spoke at grand rounds and taught a course on the surgical technique. Our Orthopaedic Surgery Program residents are taught by prominent leaders in spine surgery thanks to your generosity.

Spine First Symposium - September 29, 2023 With your support, the second annual Spine First Symposium hosted a special networking session with Dr. Jerry Petty and Mr. Rick Hendrick sharing their experiences, advice, and legacy.

Because of you, the impact of philanthropy and the importance of neurosurgical and spine care was shared with administrators and physicians throughout the Carolinas.

Presentations at regional conferences The Dr. Jerry & Audrey Petty Endowed Professorship In Spine Surgery underwrote three neurosurgery residents to attend regional conferences where they presented on behalf of our residency program. Your philanthropic dollars brought the work of our Neurosurgical residents to new levels of excellence and expanded their educational pursuits.

1. Dr. Steve Monk attended the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Meeting.

2. Dr. Daniel Zeitouni attended the 2023 Spine Summit Meeting.

3. Dr. Vince Rossi and Dr. Steve Monk attended the Southern Neurosurgical Society Meeting.

“I am fortunate to be the inaugural Hendrick Family Endowed Professor in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Atrium Health.

I am indebted to Rick and Linda Hendrick and Marshall and Lynn Carlson for trusting me with care of their beloved Kate. They have provided me - and the teams of highly skilled professionals here in Charlotte and the Carolinas - with the opportunity to expand expertise and skill for the care of children with brachial plexus nerve injuries; cerebral palsy disorders of the hand and upper limb; congenital hand differences; and traumatic injuries to the hand and upper limb in kids.

Along the way, we also are doing high level research and providing education in these areas for surgeons in training and throughout their career.

Most importantly, we are providing empathic, supportive care to children, parents, and families as they go through their treatment(s) - an issue I am sure the Hendrick family understands well and endorses whole-heartedly. Informally, this occurs daily in the office, operating room, and hospital.

Formally, there are now separate, year-long leadership programs for orthopaedic surgical residents, fellows and faculty to expand their emotional intelligence and non-technical skills of communication, teamwork, decision making, task management and leadership.

I am very impressed with the surgeons, care teams, educators, and researchers here in the Carolinas. The future is bright in Charlotte with the medical school opening, simulation program arriving, and expanding facilities and expected influx of medical professionals. I am honored to be able help, especially with the now available funds to do more. None of this is about me; it is about everyone doing their jobs well and better, every day: highly functioning teams with an open, learning mindset.

The day-to-day responsibilities of Dr. Waters include, but are not limited to:

1 Executive coaching, mentoring, and education for orthopaedic surgical leaders, faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students

2 Providing expertise in clinical decision making and surgical care for pediatric patients with complex upper limb congenital, brachial plexus, neuromuscular, traumatic and posttraumatic conditions

3 Educating all levels of caregivers - formally in lectures and seminars, and informally in the office and operating room while caring for patients

4 Participating in research on these complex problems 5 Working with leadership to expand present, or develop new, programs that enhance the clinical care, education and research here

Dr. Waters’ objectives :

1 Help make the highest level, complex

care more accessible here in the Carolinas for children who have brachial plexus, congenital hand and upper limb malformations, neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, or have suffered devastating injuries.

2 Educate surgeons in-training and throughout their career on ways to improve and excel.

3 Continue to pursue research here - and in collaboration with national and international experts -

to improve care delivery and better understand complex upper limb and hand problems in children.
