A Message from our Board Chair: During the long days of summer, many of us look forward to vacations, family time, and a slower pace. At Atrium Health Foundation, the days still seem to speed by as momentum continues for our Giving Hope campaign. Since the spring, we have celebrated many transformational gifts from generous corporations, individuals, and families who all share a passion for ensuring the very best, equitable health care in our community. With their support, we have now surpassed our halfway mark in the campaign. We owe a huge thank you to kick-off chair Hugh McColl for leading us to this point. his May, Atrium Health Foundation celebrated a milestone in the Giving Hope campaign with a remarkable investment of $5.05 million from Charlotte-based Truist, via the Truist Charitable Fund and Truist Foundation. The gift will significantly boost several community-driven programs aimed at
improving health outcomes and economic mobility for vulnerable community members in the Charlotte area — both important cornerstones of Atrium Health’s “for all” mission. A portion of the gift will fund three critical neighborhood-model-of-care programs that will enhance quality of life, health outcomes, and medical care available in underserved neighborhoods, as well as support new learning opportunities that will inspire young people to dream big.

Campaign Hits Milestone, Gains New Leadership
Exciting news! The Giving Hope Campaign reached its halfway point in May, raising $250 million just two years after launching the community’s largest philanthropic initiative to date. Campaign kickoff chair Hugh McColl was instrumental in this success, having personally raised over $80 million toward the goal. We celebrate his generous contributions as he takes a well-deserved break, and we usher in the next phase of the campaign. We are excited to introduce our new co-chairs, who have stepped up to fill big shoes:
Pat Rodgers has been a leading figure in the Charlotte community for decades, serving as president and CEO of Rodgers Builders since 1987. She has been active on multiple boards promoting the arts and education, and she is a recipient of the Order of the Longleaf Pine, one of the highest civilian awards in the State of North Carolina. A longtime friend of Atrium Health, she is passionate about supporting children’s health and cancer research. For nearly three decades, Tom Finke has been a leader in the finance sector, most recently as CEO of Adara Acquisition Corp. Prior to that, he served as chairman and CEO of Barings, which has supported Atrium Health for over a decade, specifically Levine Children’s Hospital. A graduate of both the University of Virginia and The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, he is actively involved in giving back to the community, having served on the board for various universities and civic organizations.

W
ith significant support from many generous
individuals and community partners, Atrium Health Levine Children’s has reached its
next milestone in the transformation of Levine Children’s Medical Plaza, Atrium Health’s most significant endeavor in pediatrics since the 2007 opening of Levine Children’s Hospital. On July 17, Levine Children’s welcomed patients and families to the newly renovated Torrey Hemby Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders, a 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art specialty outpatient center made possible with leading support from The Alex Hemby Foundation. cityscape theme of the Torrey Hemby Center and the surrounding third floor gives a glimpse into the broader design of the future Levine Children’s Medical Plaza, one that takes patients and visitors from cities and mountains to the coast and skies above.
Anchoring the Torrey Hemby Center is the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Infusion Suite. This state-of-the art, 17-bay infusion suite will allow for the administration of Phase I clinical trials, Dendritic Cell Vaccines, and other leading-edge immunotherapies. Patients treated in the infusion suite will also have access to play, art, and music therapy, and other vital supportive medicine. The Reneé and Dewey Jenkins Conference Center will serve as an essential communications hub and gathering place for small and large groups of visitors, hospital staff, and patients, including space for medical conferencing and real-time collaboration across the care spectrum. The conference center will also physically — and virtually — bring together local, national, and international pediatric experts to share knowledge across a variety of medical subspecialties.

or several decades, members of the Bissell family and Bissell Ballantyne company have shared a vision to create a brighter future for our community. This vision has sparked transformational giving to advance excellence in health care across Atrium Health, supporting areas like Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Atrium Health Levine Cancer, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, and the new David L. Conlan Center at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation. Both the Bissell family and Annette Siverling — Smoky Bissell’s chief operating officer with Bissell Ballantyne — have been impacted by the services provided at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and saw an opportunity to meaningfully impact the trajectory of cardiovascular care in the Southeast. Inspired by their experiences at Atrium Health, a gift of $5 million was recently made by Bissell Ballantyne, Margaret and Smoky Bissell, and Annette Siverling to advance education and cardiovascular performance programs at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. The gift from Margaret and Smoky Bissell will establish The Gragg Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine and The Gragg Center for Cardiovascular Performance. Also being introduced is The Siverling Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery that was previously funded by a gift from Bissell Ballantyne. “Transformational gifts, such as these, help position us among the best health systems in the country,” said Dr. Geoffrey Rose, president of Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute.

Dr. Frank Arko III, chief of vascular and endovascular surgery and co-director for the Center for Aortic Disease at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, has been named the inaugural holder of the Siverling Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery. Dr. Arko was the first surgeon in the world to implant a branched stent graft specifically designed for branch vessel repair of a thoracic aortic aneurysm and is involved in some of the nation's top clinical trials. The first recipient of the Gragg Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Dermot Phelan, serves as Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute’s medical director of cardiovascular imaging, director of sports cardiology, and co-director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center. Although he cares for athletes of all skill levels and ages, he is renowned as the team cardiologist for the Carolina Panthers and the Cardiology Consultant to the National Football League’s annual Scouting Combine. “We are pleased to honor two fabulous physicians for the world-class care received by members of our Bissell

THANKFUL HEARTS FOR PATIENTS OF THE HEARTEST YARD CONGENITAL HEART CENTER
I
n 2019, Atrium Health Levine Children’s received a $2.5 million gift from Receptions for Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation to help build a next-generation pediatric cardiovascular and congenital heart specialty center. The HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center opened in December 2020 and represents one of the
first pediatric outpatient programs to be completed in the ongoing renovation of Levine Children’s Medical Plaza, which will eventually house all pediatric outpatient specialties under one roof. Recognizing the profound impact of the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center and the benefits of coordinating specialty care for complex patients in a state-of-the-art facility, Receptions for Research recently committed an additional $2.5 million to support the continued development of the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center. The gift will also establish an endowed chair at the Center, which will enable Levine Children’s to continue building a world-class congenital heart program for years to come. “The support of Greg and Kara Olsen and Receptions for Research has been instrumental in creating an extraordinary space to care for children with congenital heart disease,” said Dr. Gonzalo Wallis, chief of pediatric cardiology and medical director of the pediatric heart failure and transplant program. “With their philanthropy, we have developed and advanced critical programs essential to the well-being of our children, where state-of-the-art patient and family-centered care is provided.”

The establishment of an endowed chair will enable the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center’s highly specialized care programs to flourish, including its neurodevelopmental program, the children’s high acuity monitoring program (CHAMP), and most recently, the pediatric Fontan clinic. “Programs such as these not only treat children, but make sure to keep them healthy and thriving, to achieve their best potential,” said Dr. Wallis.
Changing the trajectory of congenital heart care at Levine Children’s Over the years, Greg and Kara Olsen, along with supporters of their foundation, have achieved many “big wins” for Levine Children’s patients and their families. In 2012, they first teamed up with Levine Children’s to launch the HEARTest Yard Initiative to assist families who require home health care for children born with congenital heart conditions. As the HEARTest Yard initiative grew, Greg and Kara Olsen recognized an opportunity to support the heart program on a larger scale. In 2017, they pledged $750,000 to launch a cardiac neurodevelopmental clinic, which provides cardiac patients and families with access to neuropsychologists, education specialists, mental health professionals, dietitians, and other innovative patient therapies. The gift was followed by a $2.5 million pledge made in 2019 to establish the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center — a gamechanger for congenital heart patients in the Carolinas. Thanks to this latest gift, the HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center will continue to drive innovation in education and cardiovascular care delivery and have a lasting impact on patients and families served by Atrium Health.

To recognize the Levine’s commitment — which brings their lifetime collective contributions to Atrium Health to over $80 million — all Atrium Health cancer services in the Carolinas will now be aligned under one unifying name: Atrium Health Levine Cancer. “The Leon Levine Foundation has been instrumental in the advancement of care for so many North Carolinians — no matter their race, ethnicity, or background,” said Ken Haynes, president of the Southeast region of Advocate Health, of which Atrium Health is a part. “Today, we bring together the brightest minds at two nationally recognized cancer centers — Levine Cancer Institute and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center — so we can more effectively collaborate and better serve patients from all walks of life. Atrium Health Levine Cancer has and forever will be synonymous with world-class care.” Together, the two programs that now comprise Atrium Health Levine Cancer represent the largest cancer program in the Carolinas and one of the largest programs in the Southeast. Their combination means more than 440 providers and 3,000 teammates across 78 practices and at 28 locations will care for more than 35,000 new patients each year. These patients will have access to the most novel therapies and robust survivorship and cancer rehabilitation programs.
“When we made our gift to support the first Levine Cancer Institute facility, which opened in 2012, our vision was to help change the course of cancer care in the Carolinas,” said Sandra Levine. Sandra's late husband, Leon, was the founder and chairman of Family Dollar. Mr. Levine passed away in April, leaving a tremendous and lasting legacy in the Carolinas, significantly in the health care community. “We felt strongly that everyone should have access to the most current treatment options, close to

ATRIUM HEALTH GAINS MOMENTUM ON CONSTRUCTION OF ADVANCED RADIATION CENTER Atrium Health Levine Cancer will soon offer the most technologically advanced radiation services, including gamma knife radiosurgery and the Carolinas’ first proton beam therapy program, from its midtown Charlotte headquarters. These advanced technologies will allow Atrium Health to provide adults and children diagnosed with complex tumors with unprecedented access to more precise and minimally invasive treatments. Anticipated to open later this year, the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center will not only bring these treatments to local patients but will also become a destination site for patients around the region. To house advanced radiation therapies safely, the Center is currently being outfitted with special features to protect patients and teammates. The complex and highly coordinated installation process — including placing a large gamma knife and proton beam — will be completed early this fall. Representing the collective vision of teams from Atrium Health Levine Cancer, Atrium Health Levine Children’s, and Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute, the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center will allow greater collaboration among experts in numerous specialties, including pediatrics, neurosurgery, clinical trials, supportive oncology, radiation oncology, and global health services. Plans for the center were conceived to ensure the patient experience was at the heart of every detail, such as accessibility, integrative oncology services, patient privacy, and more.
ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF CANCER CARE The Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center will provide two cutting-edge treatments that are new to the region, and both involve the delivery of highly precise radiation therapy: • Proton beam therapy generates a microscopic particle (proton) that delivers radiation to abnormal tissues in the body with an incredibly high degree of accuracy, leaving the areas around the tumor unharmed. • Gamma knife radiosurgery is a non-invasive treatment that uses light energy (photons) to primarily treat brain lesions. It is done entirely as an outpatient procedure and does not require an incision or general anesthesia.

REDEFINING HOPE FOR YOUNG WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER
Through early detection and advanced treatment options, Atrium Health Levine Cancer is bringing hope to patients diagnosed with the disease. Established in 2017 with leading support from benefactors Sandra and Leon Levine, the Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Program is fulfilling a great need by tailoring medical care, research, and support systems precisely to meet the unique needs of women under 45 who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Program co-director Lejla Hadzikadic-Gusic, MD, MS, FACS, gave Atrium Health Foundation an inside look at the origins of the program and key accomplishments since its creation.
Q
Atrium Health Foundation: What was the genesis of the Sandra Levine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program?
A
Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic: The program was established in 2017 as a result of many conversations with young patients diagnosed with breast cancer. They identified several needs that were unique to their age group that were not well developed with a standard treatment plan. With generous support from Sandra and Leon Levine, this specially tailored program was designed to meet the needs of these women.
Q
Foundation: How does the program differ from other breast cancer services provided by Atrium Health Levine Cancer?
A
Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic: We already had a very well-established and reputable breast cancer program at Atrium Health Levine Cancer. We expanded on that to create more opportunities for clinical trial availability and a focus on research in this particular field. We created a young women’s support group that became so popular that they now meet monthly and have expanded virtual capabilities. We also created a Mind Body Spirit series, with the help of my colleague and program co-director, Dr. Julie Fisher, to add an educational and healing aspect of the program that is offered quarterly. We continue to work with our patients to add new programs and support services, such as a new social media networking mobile app, an e-newsletter, and other resources to help patients more easily build community with one another.

Foundation: In 2022, Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute and the Area Health Education Center hosted the annual Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Symposium. What were the purpose and outcomes of the regional conference?
A
Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic: The Symposium is an educational opportunity to help define the current standard of care for breast cancer and how it applies to younger women. In 2022, the conference focused on breast cancer and pregnancy. Presentations addressed fertility concerns through breast cancer treatment and after; surgical considerations in pregnant women such as the optimal time to operate; and systemic treatment options to care for both mother and child.
“Our program is one of four Young Women’s Breast Cancer programs in the country and the only one of its kind in the Southeast. We are very proud of this program and are thankful to the Levine family for their generosity and philanthropy. We are on the leading edge of regional care of young women with breast cancer both clinically and from a research standpoint. We hope to continue our research efforts and foster collaboration among the other dedicated programs so that we may learn from each other, and shape improved outcomes for our young patients,” says Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic,

Q Foundation: How do you hope to see the program continue to evolve and grow with philanthropic support?
A Dr. Hadzikadic-Gusic: I hope to build bridges with other similar programs nationally to grow a network of providers who care for similar patients. This will broaden our research base and foster support for multicenter clinical trials in this patient population, which will allow us to move the needle forward in improving standards of care. SURVIVOR ‘SHAKES OFF’ CANCER TO GIVE PATIENTS HOPE In 2015, Mika and Davy Overcash of Mooresville, NC, were faced with the biggest crisis of their lives — a cancer diagnosis for their five-year-old son Davis. They vowed to “shake off” cancer and create hope for others, at every twist and turn. Doctors at Levine Children’s Hospital made a grim discovery when Davis was admitted to the hospital with a grade 4 liver laceration. He had hepatoblastoma — a serious form of liver cancer that is exceedingly rare among children. Thankfully, Levine Children's acted quickly, and the timely diagnosis allowed Davis to tackle his cancer aggressively through chemotherapy and surgery. Even after enduring 12 rounds each of three types of chemotherapy and the removal of 50 percent of his liver, Mika says her energetic son found joy in dancing as he regained his strength — and the dancing never stopped. That was the inspiration for the Overcash family’s creation of the Dancing Davis ‘Shaking Off Cancer’ Foundation, which has been supporting other families facing childhood cancer, in many special ways. Thanks to the generosity of the Dancing Davis Foundation, patients on the 11th floor of Levine Children’s Hospital who are undergoing cancer treatment have special resources to ease their cancer journey, including celebration carts and a “Warrior Wall” designed to uplift patients' spirits and celebrate their health milestones. Now 14 years old, Davis most recently played an important part in major upgrades to the 11th-floor teen room, a space designed especially for teens to have access to video games, magazines, art supplies, and more. With support from the Dancing Davis Foundation, the space was transformed to include new flooring and furnishings, an arcade game table, an interactive sensory panel to promote relaxation and neurodiversity, a sit-in racing game, and a giant Jenga game.

RONELLA EADDY: BORN TO BE A NURSING STAR As a child, Ronella Eaddy dreamed of becoming a nurse and was affectionately called “Little Nurse” by her grandmother. Today, she is the chief nursing officer at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation, leading nursing initiatives within a nationally recognized hospital. Ronella has served in a leadership role at Atrium Health for over 13 years and was recognized as a Pinnacle Award winner in 2020 for her commitment to her patients and teammates. In January, her team was instrumental in moving patients into the new David L. Conlan Center at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation. Her proudest achievements, however, are those of her rehab team, which was awarded the CRRN Advocacy Award in 2022 and the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality Award in 2019, among other accolades. ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH SHOWS PROMISE FOR NEW DISCOVERIES Under the direction of Oleg Tcheremissine, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Research Director for Behavioral Health Services at Atrium Health, recent studies focused on Alzheimer’s disease have shown the potential to provide high levels of durable amyloid plaque clearance and significant reduction in cognitive decline. “Although these results are encouraging, much more needs to be done in order for us to better understand the underlying biological complexity of Alzheimer’s disease, so we can develop novel therapeutics with vastly different mechanisms of action,” explained Dr. Tcheremissine. Co-presented by JELD-WEN and Rodgers Builders, the event welcomed a record number of participants to Charlotte, NC, raising over $130,000 for cancer research and patient support programs at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children's. “We have seen firsthand how the funds raised by this race have impacted those at Levine Children’s and Levine Cancer,” said Page Stroup, director of development at Atrium Health Foundation, to a crowd of nearly 1,500 supporters. “Patients, young and old, have access to cutting-edge clinical trials that just a few years ago were not available here. From Supporter to Survivor: ESTELLE WILSON’S JOURNEY ‘POUNDING’ CANCER COMES FULL CIRCLE Estelle Wilson was among more than 300 JELD-WEN team members who completed the Keep Pounding 5K in June. A participant for many years, her support took on a different meaning after being diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer on Christmas Eve 2020. Estelle underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, two surgeries, and 32 rounds of radiation at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute before being declared cancer-free in August 2021. She now knows first-hand the important role the services at Levine Cancer Institute play in patients' treatment and recovery.

On the SCENE 1. 11th Annual Levine JCC Kids Triathlon Presented by The Leon Levine Foundation, the Levine JCC Kids Triathlon raised over $62,000 to benefit pediatric rehabilitation at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, Carolinas Rehabilitation’s Adaptive Sports & Adventure program, and adaptive and special needs programming at the Levine JCC. Children of all ages and abilities swam, biked, and ran in this unique event that brings together supporters of a single cause — helping individuals overcome physical barriers and live their best lives.

Madelyn’s Fund supporters grab their racquets for a great cause More than 64 supporters of Madelyn’s Fund hit the tennis courts at Charlotte Country Club for the 3rd Annual Ladies Doubles Tournament, raising $18,000 to support families who receive care in Atrium Health Levine Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nurseries. Since 2016, Madelyn’s Fund founders Andy and Rachel Lee have honored their daughter Madelyn's memory through support of young patients. 2

3. 12th Annual Sarcoma Stomp Presented by AmWINS, the Paula Takacs Foundation's annual Sarcoma Stomp brought together 1,100 community members — including many grateful patients and sarcoma survivors. The event raised more than $230,000 to benefit sarcoma research at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children’s. Members of Team Elissa (pictured with Paula Takacs Foundation executive director Susan Udelson) are familiar faces at the Sarcoma Stomp, traveling to Charlotte from Pennsylvania every year to “stomp” in memory of their beloved family member.

4. 24 Foundation’s “24 Hours of Booty” For more than two decades, Charlotte-based 24 Foundation has raised $26 million and counting to support cancer survivorship and wellness programs in the Carolinas and beyond, including programs led by Atrium Health Levine Cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children’s. This year's “Booty Loop” was once again filled with cyclists and spectators as supporters circled the loop for 24 straight hours — including many teammates from Atrium Health's adult and pediatric cancer survivorship and wellness programs.

Charlotte Knights Charities Golf Classic On May 22, players and friends of the Charlotte Knights gathered at Pine Island Country Club for a round of golf at the 16th Annual Charlotte Knights Charities Golf Classic. Thanks to the generosity of the Charlotte Knights and attendees, the event raised over $33,700 to support Levine Children’s fourth-floor rehabilitation playroom.

Pink Knights for Breast Cancer Initiatives at Atrium Health Levine Cancer This May, Charlotte Radiology and the Charlotte Knights teamed up for the 17th Annual Pink Knights ballgame at Truist Field. Honored guests included several breast cancer survivors treated at Atrium Health Levine Cancer. Thanks to attendees and contributors to the event, over $25,000 was raised for Project PINK to provide free screening mammograms for uninsured women in the Greater Charlotte community.

7. HEARTest Yard/Showmars 5K This spring marked two special events organized to support local congenital heart families. Receptions for Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation and Showmars Restaurants joined forces once again and celebrated the 7th Annual HEARTest Yard + Showmars 5K. More than 700 community members participated in the annual 5K run/walk benefiting The HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center at Levine Children's Hospital. A month later, supporters perfected their golf swing at the 10th Annual HEARTest Yard Golf Classic at The Point on Lake Norman.

Giving Hope Campaign Cabinet On May 23, cabinet members and honored guests gathered at Quail Hollow Club to celebrate reaching the halfway point of the Giving Hope comprehensive fundraising campaign for Atrium Health. Ken Haynes, president of the Southeast region for Advocate Health, shared words of gratitude for donors’ support: “Because of your contributions, we have broken down barriers to ensure that no matter where you live or what your background is, you’ll have equal access to high-quality care. We have inspired young generations from underserved areas who dream of a healthcare profession to pursue their careers; enhanced research programs to optimize our for-all mission; and improved infrastructure so that we can accommodate the latest equipment and technology to offer the best working environments for our healthcare heroes.”

A Grateful Patient
Pays it Forward
I
n 2013, Julia Slaydon was enjoying good health, quality time with family, and a successful accounting career. She was looking forward to retirement when she received a shocking diagnosis: stage 4 uterine cancer. Julia immediately began treatment with specialists at Atrium Health Levine Cancer, where she was
fortunate to have access to the latest treatment options, including a clinical trial. Even after cancer recurrences in 2019 and 2022, Julia remains optimistic, sharing, “I am still battling cancer, but I am hopeful. My whole experience with Levine Cancer Institute has been caring, compassionate, and encouraging.” With support from her care team and loved ones, Julia has kept her spirits high and focuses on not letting her diagnosis keep her from sharing adventures with her husband, Talmadge. They have toured Africa, Italy, and Wales, fulfilling a childhood dream of Julia’s to travel the world. Julia and Talmadge plan to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary with a trip to Iceland this summer. Grateful for the hope and healing Atrium Health Levine Cancer has provided throughout her cancer journey, Julia and her husband were inspired to give back. The couple’s financial advisor recently introduced them to donor advised funds, a form of planned giving that allowed them to thoughtfully support causes most meaningful to their family. “We thought about what Levine Cancer Institute had given to me as a 10-year cancer survivor, participating in a research trial, and how the caregivers have been on this journey with me," said Julia. “I feel fortunate others had given to make these kinds of programs and compassionate care possible for me. I wanted to give back. Hopefully, my planned gift will help others as I have been helped.”

This July, Atrium Health leaders and community supporters celebrated the official groundbreaking of a one-million-square-foot, state-of-the-art patient bed tower on Atrium Health's midtown Charlotte campus. When completed, the new facility will connect to both the Rush S. Dickson tower and the David L. Conlan Center at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation — which opened in January 2023.
