Life on the water during the summer months is a common occurrence in this area, but understanding the nature of the time spent on the Ohio and area lakes can sometimes be a mystery to those of us who don’t partake in this recreational activity. So, we asked a handful of folks what it is that they enjoy so much about the open water and the boat loving lifestyle.

D

acia Fritchley and her boyfriend Brandon Rogers like to go out on the Ohio with her son Luke and their dog Cosmo. They operate a 22’ Cuddly Cabin Sunbird. Fritchley shares that she enjoys the “fact that everyone on the water forms a bond and helps each other out. Families from every socioeconomic background have a common love of the water and enjoy it together. Kids make new friends exploring the beaches. Cookout on the island is synonymous with Saturday afternoon for boaters.” She adds, “Brandon belongs to the Evansville Boat and Ski Club, and they truly are like one big family. Without asking, someone is ready to back your trailer in so you can load your boat at the end of the day, and it doesn’t stop until the last boat is out. I was in awe the first time I saw that. Everyone in unison. Laughing, dancing, and making plans for the next morning. We come off the water and head for the camper where we prepare dinner and spend the night next to the water with friends and a fire. My son can’t wait for summer just to get back out on the water with the friends he’s made. I’m so thankful for the many good people I’ve met through boating.”

Crystal and Brandon Elliott like to go out on Kentucky Lake, Patoka Lake, and on the Ohio River with their daughters in Brandon’s parents Sea Ray Sundeck. They enjoy soaking up the sun, swimming, and relaxing with family and friends. Crystal shares that boating “allows for quality family time with our daughters and family. Inland Marina, Inc. president Katie Riecken Parker says, “The feeling of freedom, the nature & the beauty… Nothing compares to being on the water. People who boat have less stress in life. It’s a psychological healer.”

Inland Marina offers boat slips on the Ohio River with fresh water and electric. Reicken shares that they can give “the convenience of not having to trailer your boat. We supply 24 marine fuel 365 days a year, ice, have two restaurants on the property (one on the water boats can tie up to) [as well as] transient slips for traveling boats.” The marina is also celebrating 50 years of fun this year on the Ohio River.

Boating can become a tradition in some families including that of Tom and Gayla Goodman. Tom shares, “Our grandson Camron loves to go boating with us when he’s not playing baseball. He has been boating since he was six weeks old! He is now 13, almost 14. All of our children have been on the river with us. We would usually spend weekends on the river together. Kelly is 34 and Travis is now 26. His wife Emily have both gone with us, [too, and we are] now waiting for their son Miles to join us. He just turned 1.” The Goodman family use a 1997 Searay 250 Sundancer, with two sleeping berths, a kitchen, a full head, and “everything we need for a weekend on the water.” Not only do they enjoy the Ohio River, but they always also visit Green Turtle Bay once a year for a week at the lakes with friends. According to Tom, “Boating has just been something that takes you away from the everyday stresses of life, time to relax, enjoy the calm beauty and peace of being on the water with your toes

in the sand and a cool drink in your hand!

[It] helps me to mentally get ready for the start of the work week, and the anticipation of the next boating weekend. I don’t ever see us not boating or being on the water, we love our River Rat friends!”

Abby and Milan Maravich like to take their 23 ft. Caravelle Interceptor out with their two sons as well as their dog. They enjoy relaxing and the sun on both Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. Abby describes their time on the water as “one thing we all do as a family. We’ve created the best memories skiing, tubing, etc. It’s definitely our happy place together. We love the water, the sunshine, and lake life. We’d never trade it for the world!” H&L

Surrounded by the rolling hills of the west side of Evansville, the Brickyard Luxury Apartments & Townhomes offer upscale housing close to downtown.

Resident Joel Bohannon, originally from Atlanta, has spent more than a year at the Brickyard Apartments. Having lived in other apartments and being a former homeowner, Bohannon praises Brickyard as “one of the most attractive complexes in Evansville” for its quality, cost and comparison to other buildings.

When he first came to Evansville, Bohannon made the usual online searches and looked at several complexes. “They were all commercial,” but Brickyard Apartments was set in a residential area, a “secluded, quiet neighborhood” where “everyone was so polite and nice.”

“The best part is the friendly staff,” says Bohannon. “It’s amazing how the maintenance team works. They have the best maintenance team I’ve ever experienced.” When Bohannon himself had a problem, he reported the issue, and it was resolved the same day.

The Brickyard community is a multi-cultural mixture of residents. “The age of residents varies from young adult to not-soyoung adult,” he says with a laugh. The assorted population includes retirees, college students, professors and recent graduates moving out on their own. “I haven’t met anyone with a bad attitude.” Bohannon also spoke of neighbors helping neighbors during difficult winters when people were snowed in.

“Evansville is a great city. And Brickyard Apartments is a great complex to live in, with friendly• residents and management team.”

Golden Tower Apartments

Situated near the campus of the University of Southern Indiana, on the west side of Evansville, Golden Tower Apartments is a perfect option for students.

With a selection of floor plans and vast amenities including major appliances, a pet park, free Wi-Fi, fitness center and tanning and sand volleyball and basketball courts, Golden Tower offers all the comforts of home to college scholars and other young people.

Current resident Lynn Strohl enjoys “the spacious living area that Golden Towers offers, especially the bedrooms.” One of the main reasons for his decision to live in the Golden Tower Apartments is its proximity to USI. He also discovered that they “also have the ‘homey’ feel to them. That is what stood out most from the other apartments I’ve lived in.”

Despite being known as a welcoming refuge for the younger college crowd, “the complex is also a quiet place to live,” says Strohl.

He doesn’t deny the college atmosphere at Golden Tower, but “I would recommend living in Golden Towers to anyone.” H&L

An Intimate Look at the Home of

Scott & Susan Hyatt

T

his charming colonial was built in 1928 by Anderson & Veach, its 4,200 square feet of space including four bedrooms and two and half baths with a basement, has been home to the Hyatt family for 15 years.

The house is a part of the Lincolnshire neighborhood on Evansville’s east side. The Hyatt’s enjoy the convenience of the picturesque home’s location and the variety of families within the neighborhood. The home itself suits the Hyatt family’s needs nicely with a basement for the teenagers and not too much space, so the family still has frequent interaction with one another.

The matron of the clan, Mrs. Susan Hyatt, was gracious enough to speak with Tri-State Home & Lifestyle, letting us into her home and her family’s life.

THL: What approach did you take to the interior decor?

SH: Our style is a mix of traditional and quirky. I wanted our home to be a real home, where kids and pets and visitors felt comfortable and welcomed. There are no rooms or furniture that are “off limits” or “too pristine” to enjoy. I love color, so we used reds and golds to highlight the naturally amazing architecture of the home.

Tri-State Home & Lifestyle (THL): What specifically made you fall in love with your home when you first saw it?

Susan Hyatt (SH): I was actually a realtor when I first saw my home. It was not yet on the market, and there were already multiple buyers interested. I snuck my husband in on house tour, and we put in an offer that morning. We still competed against two other offers! When I first saw my home, I fell in love with the charming curb appeal, the period glass doorknobs and the arched doorways. It was built in the 20’s, and it has retained its charm through renovations.

THL: Do you have a particular place inside of your home you like to go to relax from the day? To decompress and get away from it all?

SH: I absolutely adore my home office. It’s full of windows and light, there is room for all of my books and coaching materials, and even when I’m not working it’s a great place to hang out. I also love my leather chair by the fireplace. In the winter, you can find me camped out there with a blanket, a cup of hot tea and my laptop.

THL: What advice would you give to a brand new homeowner who just decided to live in Evansville or the tri-state area?

SH: My advice would be to rent for six months first, while you get the feel for the different neighborhoods in the city and surrounding area. Hire an experienced realtor as a buyer’s agent.

They find out about homes before they are ever on the market. Get involved in the community and get to know what Evansville has to offer. From downtown to Franklin Street, there are some great locally-owned restaurants, boutiques and unique things to do. Over the past 15 years, Evansville has become a wonderful home base for me. I travel all over the country for my business, and I always look forward to coming home to Evansville! H&L

I Live in a Downtown Loft

&

Love It!

Downtown Evansville is full of unique housing options ranging from homes built in the 1800s to contemporary lofts and apartments of all shapes and sizes.

L

ofts are among the unique options and are growing in popularity. Main Street is lined with lofts that grace the top floors of the historic buildings, and it is easy to see why they are becoming so popular. From the historical building features to the overall landscape of downtown, lofts offer a unique, and often one-of-a-kind housing experience.

Kevin Catt, who lives in the center of downtown in a loft on Main Street, was drawn to loft life while looking for a new place to live.

“The loft idea came when I started looking for a new place to stay online. I saw a few lofts online and thought they were really unique,” said Catt. “The lofts that I saw for rent were different from anything I had really seen around here, and I liked that a lot.”

Catt’s loft is set up like a large studio apartment; his bedroom area is just a few steps from his kitchen, which has a dining space and leads into his living room. The loft has amazing, historical features like exposed brick and high ceilings. The living room features huge windows that overlook Main Street allowing for wonderful natural lighting. The layout, which also features two bathrooms, is very open and inviting.

“I just love having so much space and the layout is just so original, everyone who comes over tends to really like the place and its unique design,” said Catt.

Of course, location was important for Catt. He is in walking distance of The Ford Center as well as the many downtown restaurants, bars and coffee shops, all places that he frequents.

“If I want to check out an Icemen game, I just walk to The Ford Center. If I want a burger I just go downstairs and grab one from Twilight Bistro right next door,” he said. “I love being outdoors, and I can find a lot to do around here. Fresh Market is [within] walking distance during the summer.”

Like any living space, lofts can have their disadvantages. High ceilings mean high heat bills and having the Wine and Jazz Festival right outside your window can keep you from getting to bed at a decent hour. But the pros have always outweighed the cons for Catt, “I do enjoy living in a loft. I have a lot of space and the location is great for what I enjoy doing outside and event seeking. There is always a lot of people out on the greenway in the spring and summer, and that’s always a great way to meet new people.” H&L

The Evansville area is known for its hospitality and as being a great place to raise a family, but we wanted to a take a closer look at what it is that everyone loves so much about living here. I wanted to find out what it is about their particular neighborhoods that keep them staying in this area… Here is what I found.

Engelbrecht Place Candice Moore of Newburgh lives in Engelbrecht Place, what used to be the old Engelbrecht apple orchard. They were the sixth house built in the neighborhood, and according to Moore, “it has been fun to watch it grow.” She’s resided there since October 2004, and what drew her to the area was the proximity to her previous neighborhood. It is “close to schools and other amenities.

The neighborhood is one street - a circle with only one entrance/exit - so it’s great for kids.” Moore shares that they continue to live there because, “There is no through traffic, we are close to everything and we have GREAT neighbors!” It’s also a close-knit community, one where “everybody knows each other and can look out for each other.”

Eastview Eastview Neighborhood Association President Chris Cooke has lived on Frisse Avenue since January of 2001. He was attracted to the area based on its affordability and its location. This was the first home that he had ever purchased. What began as a “starter” home slowly developed into his “forever” home. Cooke shares, “When I internalize why that is, I think back to the fact that I am less than a mile from where my Grandmother lived when I was a child. From the great experiences that I had as a child while getting to spend weekends at her home, I feel a deep connection to the southeast side of Evansville. I have made friends the past 13 years with many neighbors and consider them extensions of my own family.” His favorite thing about the neighborhood is its “diverse group of neighbors that will always come together to help each other out. We have embraced the neighborhood policing concept and applied it well to promote a sense both safety and of family to those who live in our area. Add in Vann Pollack Park and the proximity to Evansville’s east side, and you have set the stage for a great neighborhood with much to offer, weather you are starting your family or heading into retirement.”

Knollview Subdivision Since fall of 2006, Lisa Vaughan has called the Knollview subdivision her home. She shares that, “We loved the feeling that the neighborhood felt private, but yet close to things and people.”

She adds, “We love our neighbors! We [also] like that we are 20 minutes from almost everything, and just the vibe of the area.”

Howell Mary Kittridge has lived in her Howell neighborhood home on Broadway Avenue for 43 years. She grew up in this neighborhood, moved away and came back. She shares, “I bought the house because I always admired it as a kid. I have always called it the Amityville house because it looks like the one from the Amityville movies. I found out through the years others call it that too.” Kittridge’s mom lives four blocks from her in one direction, and her sister and her family live four blocks in the other direction. Her favorite thing about the neighborhood is its rich history. According to Kittridge, “It was a town on its own in the early days.

The houses were built for the railroad workers. For many people, the thought of living alongside a golf course brings to mind loud riding mowers and strangers combing through their yard for lost balls. But there’s another side to the story…

S

teve and Annette Lavallo moved into the Oak Meadow Country Club community about 12 years ago, purchasing a home with a view of holes 5, 7 and 8. “It was more my husband who wanted to look at Oak Meadow property because we had recently joined the club,” Annette says. “He had golfed when he was younger and thought he would pick up the game again. Living on a golf course did not interest me at all, but from the first time I set foot in the home, I fell in love with it.”

While the previous owners had numerous trees in the backyard to maintain some privacy, the Lavallos were eager to open up the view and fully take in the landscape of one of the area’s most beautiful courses. “My mother and I would sit on the back patio and watch golfers go by – which she likened to watching fish swim by – because there’s a wonderful calmness to it,” Annette says. “In 12 years, we’ve probably had 10 balls in our yard – it’s not a problem at all.”

But the scenery is just part of the appeal of golf course living for the Lavallos. “The one thing that’s super unique is that when we turn into Oak Meadow, we’re home at that point – meaning that it’s a real community feeling,” Annette explains. “We utilize the clubhouse, we walk the grounds and we eat meals with the neighbors.” They also cruise around in a golf cart. “It’s great in a neighborhood like ours,” she says. “We not only use it on the course but also to ride around to everybody’s homes.”

After being a bystander for years, Annette finally gave golf a try in 2010. She started taking lessons and was instantly “sold” on the game, even keeping a journal to document her progress. Not surprisingly, the proximity to such a fantastic course has been a major factor in her improvement.

Designer & Host of HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block

n the way of architecture and design, John Gidding, a self-proclaimed modernist with a traditional bend, has been around many different blocks a time or two.

From cookie-cutter homes in the suburbs to multi-national projects, Gidding has truly shown that his talent is supremely versatile. He holds a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a BA in architecture from Yale University. He has consulted on projects like the Brooklyn Bridge Park, Union Square in New York and a pavilion for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He was lead designer on HGTV’s Design to Sell and currently, he is designer and host of HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block.

John took a gracious amount of time from his busy schedule to talk at length

Take us back to the day you took your first architecture class at Yale University. What initially captured your interest?

John Gidding (JG): Alec Purves was the professor of Introduction to Architecture, and widely regarded as one of Yale’s best lecturers. It didn’t take much to be consumed by the architecture program. I was also good at it, which helps. I enjoyed thinking spatially for the first time. They had us mentally dissecting and drawing everyday objects, building using unconventional materials and interacting with the professors and students of the graduate school on a daily basis. Keep in mind, this is just when Robert A.M. Stern became dean, and he invited every major architect to speak and teach. It was a good time to be inspired.

THL: What is your personal definition of “Curb

Appeal” and how do you bring it to a home?

My own approach to designing “Curb Appeal” has always started with the architecture of the house - identifying the style, the era, the efforts that were made and the efforts that were skipped - and then identifying problem areas. Is the door hidden or dark? Are there issues of maintenance? What topography or foliage would help with what I think the house should say?

Etc… Then, I focus on the same elements over and over again to affect the change: great house numbers, a great path to the front door flanked with plants, careful consideration of what the foundations plantings are, and of course, color.

THL: What are some ways to spruce up a drab backyard patio area?

JG: Well, it varies with each house and each client. Some people respond best to providing interesting seating options in multiple areas so they can create conversational areas. Others like a big communal area where friends and family can gather and be festive. Some clients are all about creating raised planting beds within which

before to grow culinary plants, and others love a large lawn where kids and pets can play. As far as sprucing-up is concerned, I usually try to focus on finding colors that complement the existing house colors, bring in some eco-friendly touches like rain barrels or up-cycled pavers or mulch, and then focus on comfort and utility. Often all that’s missing is a fresh eye and a couple hundred dollars.

THL: What tips would you give a homeowner with lots of area(s) to landscape to make the space truly unique?

JG: As with interior decorating, I find the most unique and expressive designs to be those that juxtapose elements that aren’t entirely at home with one another. Think a modern, abstract piece of art over an antique console table - but in the landscape. I enjoy using retaining walls and building up hills against them to create a seat with built-in drama, or purposefully planting asymmetrically around either side of a path. It’s the things that make us notice the landscape rather than glance past it that create and build drama. Plant vertically, use inexpensive materials in decorative ways, have fun with seating, incorporate lighting for safety and for beauty, and most importantly, find your one or two statements and let them do the talking - don’t overdo it with eye-catchers in every corner.

THL: Alternatively, what advice would you give a homeowner who has virtually no space for landscaping to make the outside of their home pop?

JG: When you don’t have a lot of space, you still have verticality going for you. Container plantings are always a sure bet because you can create so much in so little - and there’s a lot of help out there for you. I was recently at a flower show where a designer of container plantings was telling his pupils to find a “thriller” (something to poke up and catch the eye), a “filler” (something in the middle to give volume and weight) and

THL: Can you describe the experience of the one project on Curb Appeal that proved to be your biggest challenge and how you overcame it?

JG: Color-picking with a homeowner is one of the inevitable challenges of Curb Appeal because it’s more than just picking a color, it’s also convincing the homeowner it’s the right color.

We had one homeowner who kept changing her mind, and to help her make the final decision, we painted ever-larger swatches of color on one wall of her house. By the end, we had painted a dozen large sections in varying shades of the same hue... and she ended up picking the very first color I’d suggested for her. But hey, you have to go through it sometimes to make it feel worth the struggle. H&L

Strengthening Communities Youth First Inc.

Exciting things are happening in Warrick County! For the past several years, Youth First, Inc., a local non-profit organization devoted to strengthening youth and families, has been coordinating Communities that Care coalitions in Warrick, as well as Gibson and Posey Counties.

C

ommunities That Care is part of a national and statewide initiative to engage community members in the prevention of substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, violence and behavioral health issues. The CTC process identifies risk factors that predict problem behaviors and finds protective factors that can help buffer children and teens from risky behaviors.

The Warrick County Communities That Care Coalition began in 2010 under a state grant that brought together organizations and community members who live and work in Warrick County. Working with the Warrick County School Corporation and other area nonprofits, the group is addressing several concerns related to underage drinking and its consequences.

These strategies include Strengthening Families, an evidencebased program for families with children ages three to 14. This evening program helps strengthen the bonds between parent and child, improves family relationships, and increases children’s social and life skills.

Family Connections is another program for families with youth ages 14-18 who are in trouble at school or referred by the courts due to problem behaviors. The program helps families develop coping and communication skills, as well as effective ways to handle discipline.

The program assists the family in identifying and carrying out the appropriate consequences if the teen’s detrimental behavior reoccurs or continues.

Project ALERT is a program implemented during the school day for 7th grade students, and it helps youth learn ways to resist peer pressure and substance use.

The coalition received a five-year Federal Drug Free Community Support Grant in September 2014 to provide additional support. Environmental strategies work towards changing the whole community, not just a selected group of participants in a program.

Through a campaign called “The Truth Is,” the coalition is working to correct misperceptions about youth underage drinking. For example: Youth may believe the majority of their peers drink, but “The Truth Is” the majority of youth do not drink and are not interested in being around teens that do.

Parents may believe youth aren’t interested in listening to them about the consequences of underage drinking, but “The Truth Is” a recent survey showed that 76% of Warrick County teens want adults to talk to them about the dangers of alcohol use.

These messages, along with others, will provide accurate information about what our youth really do and what they want to know from adults in the community. Knowledge is power. It creates the opportunity for teens to resist the pressures to drink. It also helps parents and the community support them.

Through the various strategies, awareness of the coalition and its mission, and the other great things taking place in Warrick County, our communities will be the best they can be!

Butterflies, One Yard at a Time with Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

You may have noticed the many articles written about the sharp decline in the monarch butterfly population.

E

ach year these beautiful animals migrate from their wintering grounds in Mexico and re-colonize most of the United States. The females lay their eggs only on milkweed species. The eggs hatch and the whimsical, striped caterpillars feed on milkweed leaves and grow. Eventually, they pupate and turn into the familiar orange and black adults that visit flowers and continue northward to the next milkweed patch.

When fall comes, the surviving adults make the amazing trip back to Mexico. In recent years the monarchs are having trouble finding a place to lay their eggs. Here’s the problem.

Monarchs are in trouble because milkweeds are in trouble!

Changes in farming practices have killed most of the milkweed that formerly persisted in cropland and fencerows. Herbicide ready crops make it easier to kill competing plants like milkweed. That’s bad news for butterflies, but you can help solve this problem! Plant some milkweed in your garden or landscape. Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a beautiful, adaptable plant with gorgeous orange flowers through most of the summer. It likes full sun and drier soils and makes a great long-lived addition to your landscape. Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) also makes a first rate garden plant. It’s a little taller than butterflyweed and has pink flowers from mid to late summer. As the name suggests, it prefers wetter soil conditions but is perfectly happy in average garden soils. If you plant either of these or other native milkweed species to your garden, the monarchs will show up! Then you will get to witness the amazing butterfly life cycle in your own yard.

As part of a wider native plant gardening trend, milkweeds are becoming more commonly available in the plant trade.

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden will offer Butterflyweed and other milkweed species for sale at Bloomin’ Zoo on the first full weekend in May. There will also be many other wildlifefriendly native plants to include in your garden scheme. Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers will help with growing information and other helpful tips.
