o, 2021 is certainly off to an interesting start... I am writing

It's an unfortunate situation but for most venues, the prospect of hosting a live performance is still a ways off due to ongoing Covid concerns. And that's exactly what Conductor Roger Kalia and the EPO have in store for their highly-anticipated Pops and Classics Series concerts this month. "Written at the onset of his deafness, [Symphony No. 2] honors the symphonic model while stretching its form and infamously substituting a scherzo for the traditional minuet and trio," Kalia explains. In addition, the Eykamp String Quartet will perform Banner by American composer Jesse Montgomery, which pays tribute to our national anthem, the "Star Spangled Banner," updating and adapting it for the 21st century to an orchestral medium with prominent quartet solos. CLEAN BITE LIFE Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure
When I started removing gluten from my diet, I knew pizza was going to be a challenge. I love pizza! There are a wide variety of alternative crusts options available, and I have tried most of them. When I tried
MEDITERRANEAN-INSPIRED PIZZA SERVES 2-3 PEOPLE
Simple Mills Pizza Dough mix this past year, I absolutely fell in love! If you follow the directions on the box, and make it the size they suggest, the pizza crust is perfect. My husband and I recently had a date night in, and we created this Mediterranean-inspired pizza. If Mediterranean isn’t your thing, that is the beauty of this crust, it can withstand any topping of your choosing. My kids prefer fresh mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS: •
1 box of Simple Mills Pizza Dough mix (olive oil & apple cider vinegar needed)
•
Goat cheese (LaClare Family Creamery brand)
•
No Sugar Added Uncured Kielbasa Sausage (Pederson’s Farm brand)

DIRECTIONS: 1.
Chop onion into half rings and cook over medium heat with olive oil until caramelized.
2.
While onion is cooking follow the directions on the pizza dough mix to prepare the crust.
3.
Slice the Kielbasa sausage into thin slices. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the sausage on it to bake while the pizza crust is baking.
4.
Bake the pizza crust and sausage at the same time for 15 minutes.
5.
When finished baking take both out. Mix your pizza sauce and kale pesto to put on the crust first.
6.
Break small chunks of the goat cheese and spread out all over the pizza.
7.
Next add the olives, sausage, and onion.
8.
Bake the crust again for 18 minutes.
9.
After 18 minutes take the pizza out and add a handful of arugula on top evenly. Bake an additional 2 minutes.
10. After 2 minutes your pizza is ready to enjoy! 11. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 1-2 days. The pizza reheats very nicely!

MURRAY Former Osiella singer finds true voice on "Home," her unflinchingly honest debut single Singer Cynthia Murray was at a crossroads in her life. Having officially dissolved the name of her long-running indie/country band Osiella in 2017 after years of recording and touring, she was feeling disconnected and in desperate need of a break. "I gave up everything," she says. "I quit my job while also knowing that me and my husband were headed for a separation - which led to a lot of trauma and a lot of mental anguish." With no money and no gigs, Murray soon found herself living back home with her parents in Dale, trying to make sense of everything. Safe to say she'd hit rock bottom. Mercifully, a welcome distraction soon arrived in the form of Lamasco's Got Talent. Murray was offered a slot as one of the judges of the weekly competition at the popular bar on Evansville's west side where she got back in the mix of the local music scene and began to assemble a trio to play out - purely for the purpose of paying the bills. "That was one of the best decisions I ever made," she reflects. "That's when I really got to know Stephen [Horning of Big Ninja Delight] and learned how to jam with him properly." A guitarist for the second incarnation of Osiella that launched in 2015 after Murray split with the other founding members, Horning was totally on board to join the proposed new project and over time, the two developed a deep mutual respect, both musically and personally. "He was teaching me a lot - patience, how to run sound and that not everybody in the industry is an a-hole," she reveals. It was around this time that Murray made a life-altering discovery in a closet at her parents' house: an old ukulele on which the singer vowed to learn a few chords. Simultaneously, she was in the throes of a months-long disastrous experiment with the anti-depressant Effexor which completely upended her daily life. As the fog slowly lifted, Murray went all in and dropped $400 on a brand new uke; she then spent a year trying to write about the break-up of her marriage, but was simply in the wrong headspace. "There were so many songs out of anger - my therapist said I needed to reflect, not be angry," she recalls. "And then I was at hot yoga one day and the lyrics to "Home" came to me - I left early, came home, wrote down the lyrics and cried. I know that if I'm emotional at the end of a writing session then it's good."

"My first thought was that I've never produced anybody before but I want to produce her. I want to help get this to the people - it's super important." Photographer Alex Morgan takes next step with evolving music project, debuts "Hindsight 2020," a rocking pandemic anthem Continuing to take "kind of a punk rock approach to genre fusion," multi-instrumentalist Alex Morgan is back with the latest release under the Xanderwolf banner, debuting a rocking pandemic anthem that has ramped things up on his burgeoning music project. "Hindsight 2020" - featuring a rousing chorus that touches on the political nature of the Covid-19 debacle ("I know you're terrified but we're all in this together/ They're keeping us inside until it all just goes away") - sees the well-known photographer handling all vocal and instrumental duties just like with previous singles, "A Good Night to Raise Some Hell" and "Evil Creatures." The track was recorded, mixed and mastered by Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording with Jason Rager pitching in to engineer the drum tones. Heavy yet entirely infectious - not to mention quite humorous - "Hindsight 2020" is Morgan's cynical take on the rollercoaster ride we've all been on since the pandemic hit over 10 months ago. "It definitely has a political aspect to it," he admits, "but in the perspective of the general public that has had to consume the wishy-washy "facts" that have been spewed all over everyone by the media and politicians all last year." Case in point, one particularly sharp-tongued verse breaks it down as such: "Could be the flu or something new/ And it might not do sh*t or it could kill you/ They tell us one thing and they take it back/ It came from a lab or from a bat." Set to a soundtrack that marries Black Sabbath with 90's rock, the track starts and stays hot, never losing steam - a pandemic never sounded so fun. Now let's see where Morgan steers Xanderwolf in the coming months as the project gains more and more traction.

GEORGIA FUNKADELIC With a little help from his friends: tri-state bass player calls on long list of fellow musicians to craft therapeutic debut album The way that Matthew Frankic - aka Georgia Funkadelic figures it, there are two kinds of people in this world: those that dance and those that don't. The 45-year-old bass player with an ever-present grin plastered on his face most definitely falls in the former camp. Because whenever and wherever he starts laying down the groove, his feet never stop moving; he's simply incapable of denying the feeling that winds its way up and down his body as the rhythm of the music takes over. And it's been like that ever since the Georgia native got infused with the funk back in the mid-90's and set himself on a nearly 25-year-long booty-shaking journey - during which he also learned to sing - that's ultimately resulted in the recording of Georgia's Pool Party, a wildly danceable debut album created with a little help from 19 of his closest musician friends. That's what friends are for, of course. And in this case, Frankic truly needed the help. Devastated by the dissolution of his marriage back in 2018, he mercifully found salvation in the creative process. "My life was turned upside down and one of the things that kept me sane was music," he acknowledges. "I got as active as I could be, playing in three or four bands - which gave me a lot of time with friends and that healing process took place." In total, Frankic reckons that he's played in 20 or more bands "in some form or fashion" since he moved to Evansville in 1994 to attend UE. That long list includes a trio dubbed Georgia Funkadelic (the moniker that he would eventually assume and carry forward), Organic Groove and

Then there's Foundayshun, a recent funk outfit that featured Frankic grooving alongside future GPP collaborators drummer Ben Ganster, guitarist Kyle Paisley and keyboardist Roy Micah Carter. "We tried to be hip," he laughs. Out of that attempt to be cool came a particularly close musical bond with Carter, better known as "Honey Roy," frontman for the Honey Roy Band, who welcomed Frankic into the fold for his ongoing, in-demand project and became a central figure in the shaping of Georgia's Pool Party, adding both bluesy and jazzy stabs of keys on tracks like "Cream Feelin'," "Helen of Green River," "She Knocked Me Down" and lead single "Too Much Funk." The former boasts a unique homemade video (available on YouTube) that Frankic commissioned on Fiverr.com for all of $35. "You can buy just about any type of service on there and I hired a woman who lives in Mexico to dance to my song - her boyfriend filmed it," he explains. And it works a charm. Frankic plans to try and "create a buzz" with videos for each song on the album but most importantly, hopes to get out and promote it with a run of performances when the weather warms up and outdoor shows are possible. Until then, he's eager to get back in the studio (GPP was recorded with local reggae artist Zion who handled engineering and mixing) and commence work on an instrumental follow-up - tentatively entitled The After Party. Frankic might even dive into a hip-hop album where his assembled band would lay down tracks for various vocalists to rap over. That could be very interesting, indeed. Be sure to check out Georgia's Pool Party on various streaming platforms with physical copies, including vinyl (fingers crossed), reportedly coming soon.

JOSHUA TURLEY Stand up guy: Newburgh transplant looking to grow local comedy scene show by show "The only celebrity I ever got choked up over when they died was Robin Williams," admits Joshua Turley, aspiring stand-up comic and booking agent through Foolish Comedy Productions (FCP), the company he recently founded to help grow the local comedy scene and beyond. "I looked at him as a father figure when I was growing up because he was always there. He and Richard Pryor were amazing; no one's ever going to be close to them." But while the Newburgh transplant feels hugely indebted to those two fallen comedy legends, it was actually the lesser-known Dusty Slay who sparked an epiphany back in Alabama. Turley reportedly won tickets to a Bryan Callen show at Stand Up Live comedy club in Huntsville and as feature act Slay proceeded to "crush" the crowd, he turned to his wife and emphatically stated, "I want that - I want to be able to make people laugh like that," he recalls, noting that he later got the opportunity to tell his comedy inspiration "thanks" in person. When Turley arrived in our neck of the woods in August of 2019, he immediately reached out to the Facebook group Evansville Comedy and began to integrate himself into the city's small scene. At that point, he had just reached the two year mark of his journey as a stand-up - which mostly comprised open mic nights. Not a lot of experience for a notoriously difficult

Before saying goodbye to Alabama, Turley enrolled in a comedy class which really helped to build his confidence - the main barrier to success at that point. Coach Jonathan Craig remains a mentor to this day, always available for advice. "And that's what I want to give people here," Turley says. "Evansville wants comedy, but they don't know where to get it and there's not enough people trying to build it up." To that end, he's spending less time performing of late and more time booking shows at various venues in town such as Bokeh Lounge, Carson's Brewery and Kevin's Backstage Bar & Grill. Via FCP, Turley presents showcases, the Foolish Comedy Hour and competitions. The latter, which pits comedians against each other in a process of elimination by crowd appreciation, is a particular favorite. Most importantly, FCP shows feature a variety of standup comics from all backgrounds and cultures, including comedians that drive in from cities like Nashville, Lexington and Louisville. With a five-year-old at home and a full-time job, Turley acknowledges that he doesn't have the time or the energy right now for life on the road as a professional comic, but he's still working on his craft, honing his dry delivery (his best joke is actually about his dad dying - a therapeutic way to deal with the loss) and occasionally extending his comedic reach. "I like to travel once or twice a month, go to Nashville or Louisville - I haven't performed in Lexington or Bloomington yet. And I want to get to Chicago one of my dreams is to be on The Comedy Factory."

Season three’s been wrapped for a few weeks now, a masterclass in everything the show was already doing well in its first two adventures. Comedian Jamie Loftus’ follow-up series to My Year in Mensa (a personal favorite of 2020), Lolita Podcast is one of the most challenging and engaging bits of podcasting I’ve encountered in a long time. Each episode sees Loftus examining a different facet of Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel Lolita, interrogating its pop culture legacy. Lolita Podcast is uncomfortable to listen to in the best way possible. Having had no experience with the story outside of a vague awareness of it involving pedophilia, I spent several hours wide-eyed in shock as Loftus took me down avenue after terrifying avenue. Quarantine inspired new, innovative ways of filmmaking as evidenced by Malcolm & Marie starring Zendaya and John David Washington. This is one of the first films shot during the pandemic and it’s exciting that it is finally going to premiere. Zendaya has already shown her acting chops in HBO’s Euphoria, but it will be nice to see her upgrade from the shy/ cutesy love story of her Disney and Spiderman days to this more adult look at love. Sam Levinson, the genius behind Euphoria, sticks with the rising star, directing this film through a black and white lens. And the trailer teases the pairing's steamy yet messy love with, “This is not a love story, this is the story of love.” This piece of fantasy drops on Netflix February 5. And considering the company purchased it for a cool $30M, chances are this is a piece of cinema gold.
FIREFLY LANE (2/3)
A story of decades of female friendship is what we get in the new Netflix show Firefly Lane. The series is based on the popular novel of the same name by Kristin Hannah. And while it may sound more Hallmark-esque, its two lead actresses, Katherine Heigel and Sarah Chalke, ensure there will be major talent behind the premise. And that is enough for me to tune in when it hits the streaming platform on February 3. “You’re not alone, you’ll never be alone - you’re f****** stuck with me forever,” Heigel’s character says to Chalke’s in a promo. And the idea of a show being about two women sticking it out as friends through thick and thin is quite appealing, especially after the tumultuousness of 2020. These friends are each other's rocks and it’s quite telling from the trailer that no matter what obstacles they face, they can lean on each other to get through. And that kind of loyalty and love is something we can all relate to.
TO ALL THE BOYS: ALWAYS AND FOREVER, LARA JEAN (2/12)
Perfect for the month of romance is To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean. It is also the cherry on top of Netflix's trilogy of teen rom-coms. The first film was a pleasant surprise, gifting us an interracial teen love story we haven’t gotten to see before - with a multiracial teen of Asian descent at the helm, played by the lovely Lana Condor. And this really delivered and added a dose of sugar to the popular handsomejock-falls-in-love-with-dorky-teen-girl trope. And then the second series gave her another multiracial love interest played by Jordan Fisher. And while she chose - spoiler alert - Peter, played by Noah Centineo, in the end, this third film means their love story is not over just yet, and I'm curious to find out if they are truly endgame or not. We’ll find out for sure on February 12.

When Sarah Worthington's beloved 15-year-old Boston Terrier passed away recently, she was absolutely heartbroken but also determined to pay her respects to her loyal furry friend by doing something quite wonderful. "I knew that in order to heal, I needed to save another animal," she says with conviction. The Newburgh resident already had two other rescued dogs at home - Lincoln and Cooper - but felt that a piece was missing from her family. With her husband (an Iraq War veteran - thank you for your service!) and daughter completely on board, she set to work scouring the websites of various area shelters and eventually came across a rather pathetic sight while scanning the list of available dogs to adopt at the VHS. "I saw this poor, helpless dog that clearly had been severely neglected," she recalls. "She was so matted and her ears looked terrible - I just could not imagine how painful it was for her just to walk around." Wasting no time, Worthington called the VHS first thing in the morning and explained that she needed to save the mistreated four-year-old Cockapoo - and after a number of days during which time staff got "Lucy" ready for adoption, she and her daughter were invited over for a meet and greet with their potential new rescue. "Of course she was a little scared at first, but we were able to take her home that day," Worthington recalls, "and not even 24 hours later, the love and forgiveness that this dog showed to us - not knowing what she had been through was amazing. If people could forgive the way that dogs do, wow, we'd be in a much better place in society." It's now been nearly two months and Lucy is doing fantastic; she reportedly gets along famously with her fur siblings and feels totally comfortable in her new surroundings. "She loves to be around us - wants to be with everyone in the family," Worthington happily shares. "She truly just fits in and just kind of completes the family. We could not be more blessed." You can tell by the pictures that Lucy is living it up now and has hopefully put her troubled past behind her. Thank you to the Worthingtons for saving this adorable gal!

Somehow I didn't see that coming: Trump vs. Biden Pt. 5 I must admit, I lost track of the news for a bit recently and somehow missed the buildup to the U.S. Capitol melee - meaning I didn't see Trump imploring his hardcore followers to gather on January 6 and effectively storm the building in the name of taking back the White House. Blame it on politics fatigue or whatever; at some point, you just need a break from the madness. (Bear in mind that I'm writing this nearly three weeks before publication so who knows what will have transpired in the meantime.) Obviously, there was trouble brewing based on the millions of people still convinced that the election was stolen; I guess I just never imagined it would escalate to such a degree. My mistake. But as I've noted in several previous pieces, division runs so very deep in America at the moment (hardly a revelation) - this sort of event was, perhaps, bound to happen. I say that in hindsight, because my gut was telling me that with the many challenges to the election outcome failing in the courts, a certain level of acceptance would set in and calm might just prevail - especially with the imminent Covid vaccines offering a glimmer of hope to quell the pandemic. Again, I was just slightly off the mark.

But here we are, regardless. Reluctantly, I've paid a bit more attention to the news in the last 24 hours and witnessed Trump delivering a clearly pre-written (not by him, of course) monologue conceding, kind of, that Biden is, you know, the next president, etc. That's at least a start - though he refuses to attend the inauguration. Probably for the best. I can't picture the two of them fake-smiling their way through the proceedings, putting aside grudges for the sake of democracy. Too much to ask for, really. And not necessary. I have to assume that Biden is hardly heartbroken over it; Trump, on the other hand, needs to kowtow to his base to keep future political ambitions alive. Why not just call it a wash? Works for me. But let me just end by saying what a crazy, crazy time we're living through. Brilliant observation, I know. Political affiliations aside, we're in this together - whether we like it or not. And most of us don't. Too bad. There's no getting around the fact that we have to inhabit the same country so suck it up and deal with it. Still better than moving to Canada or wherever people always threaten to go.

JAZMINE SULLIVAN Heaux Tales RCA Records This R&B singer has been underrated for years and we haven’t been blessed with new music since 2015. But we are so lucky she has returned. “Pick Up Your Feelings” is an empowering reminder to women that they can be strong on their own after a betrayal: “New phone (who is this?)/ Brand new, like the whip/ Rack it up, no assist/ Main bitch I ain't average." Ari Lennox also adds some major vibes to the songs “Ai’s Tale” and “On It.” I love two talented women. But really, the whole album is about featuring incredible women, including Rashida Northington in “Rashida’s Tale,” Amanda Henderson in “Amanda’s Tale,” and “Precious’ Tale” featuring Precious Daughtry. It’s a true testament of friendship and I love this original idea. “Put It Down” is a playful, sexy song, with lyrics like, “He live with his momma but I treat him like a king.” And if you want a good, ugly cry, play “Lost One.” Ideally under blankets on a bleak day. Sullivan shows an incredible range here and if we have to wait another six years for more music, I know it will be worth it. - Marisa Patwa
MORGAN WALLEN Dangerous: The Double Album Big Loud/ Republic Records With Morgan Wallen’s second studio album he is getting a chance to redeem himself. Last fall, the up-and-coming country singer was booted from his SNL musical guest spot after it went viral that he had been partying without a mask and not taking safety precautions seriously during the pandemic. And while he apologized and took some time off, he’s now back and proving that while he may still have some growing up to do, his vocals are quite mature. On the flipside, “Country Ass Sh*t" proves he still has a fun and youthful side. The true standout is “Only Thing That’s Gone” with Chris Stapleton. The combination of the newcomer and the singer who's been pretty steady in the country music scene for years, was a welcome surprise. My personal favorite, though, is “Neon Eyes.” You can feel the ache for love in his voice. I also love the cheeky lyrics, “Once you love a cowboy you’ll never be the same.” And for some good drinking songs, “Whiskey’d My Way” and “Your Bartender” might just do the trick. While I'm not a die-hard country fan, as someone who is just starting to listen and appreciate twangy tunes, Wallen is a great introduction to the genre. This album is good, pure and simple. KID CUDI Man On The Moon III: The Chosen Republic Records After such a hard year, we finally got the present we deserved with new music from rapper Kid Cudi. I have been a fan of his intoxicating vocals, hypnotic beats and gorgeous lyrics for over 10 years now, starting with being a daydreaming girl in high school. And he delivers yet again with his seventh studio release featuring 18 incredible tracks. The album has a fitting theme with the artist in an internal battle with Mr. Rager, his alter ego. In one of the opening tracks, “Tequila Shots,” he immediately pours his heart out to us with raw lyrics like, “I never thought I would be back here bleeding.” He also gets romantic with Phoebe Bridgers on “Lovin’ Me.” Their two soft and soothing vocals give us a major sugar rush. For a catchy bop for the ride up to your friend’s crib - after quarantine, of course - pull up “Rockstar Knights” with Trippie Red on the aux (do those exist anymore?). “The Void” is a heartbreaker, “She Knows This” has a hot hook and “Show Out” with Skepta and Pop Smoke is just a straight banger. Honestly, there isn’t one song on this album - his fifth top 10, by the way that isn’t fire. All Hail “KING” Cudi. - Marisa Patwa
FOUR TET Parallel Text Records The Grammy-nominated UK electronic musician graced us with a holiday present on Christmas day: his 11th studio album. This 10-track adventure opens with a daze of highs and lows over the course of the 27 minute "Parallel 1," sounding at first like a meditation exercise before diving into pulsing synth, eerie repetition of back-and-forth chimes, moments of video game fuzz, and robotic, calculated ambience that Brian Eno would be proud of. Intertwined with voicemails and other found sounds, haunting vocal hums and hymns, and ditzy space bytes, Parallel stays true to Four Tet's form of experimental music, while plunging into the soft dashes of jungle and HI-NRG influences. But it also manages to keep pace to a prototypical deep-house percussion, producing circuit-bending bird echoes before concluding with an unanticipated freeform solo piano improvisation. The cover of the project says it all: Parallel is quite a work of art made up with splatters of different genres to create a first-class sound collage that's ready to be up for display. - Freddie Bourne
CLEMENTINE WAS RIGHT Lightning & Regret The Blue Turn Clementine Was Right is the full-band recording project of poet and fiction writer Mike Young. Though CWR was established in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Young has found himself bouncing around the country and currently resides in Denver, Colorado. On the debut album Lightning & Regret, Young utilizes his poetry and fiction skills to tell beautiful stories about everyday American life. Though his storytelling is the heart of the project, Young's backing band helps create a hazy, dreamy atmosphere that pairs well with his anthemic heartland choruses. Lightning & Regret is a cozy “bootgaze” country-rock album full of literary value. CWR’s sound is like a warm blanket wrapping around you and Young’s lyrics are the bedtime story you listen to while tucked in. - Russ Finn
GHOST TOWN REMEDY Dry Spell Never Nude Records Since 2019, Nashville power-pop geekrockers Ghost Town Remedy have been teasing their debut album by releasing catchy, hook-filled singles every few months. Finally, Dry Spell sees the light of day both digitally and on physical media via their own DIY label Never Nude Records. Ghost Town Remedy have a knack for shredding and having fun, which is evident across their goofy pop-punk songs about tacos, video games, and hangovers. Don’t write off GTR as a joke though - Dry Spell has moments of sweetness and sincerity, especially on tracks like “A Lesson in Shapeshifting,” a song about singer/guitarist T.J. Maher’s late brother. If you like the sincerity and style of early Weezer, Ghost Town Remedy’s nerdy and fun debut is absolutely worth your time. - Russ Finn
FEATHERPOCKET Featherpocket Cool Weekends Though Featherpocket, the self-titled debut album from the Portland, Oregon, country-folk band was released in 2019, it’s so under the radar and so good that I had to write a review. Stylistically, the album doesn’t do much to stray away from established musical traditions as it's full of the acoustics, lap steels, banjos, and twang you can expect to find in traditional country music. Don’t let the traditional elements turn you away though - Featherpocket absolutely kills at what they are doing. Please listen to the song “Lord Forgive Me” and you will know what I mean; then please listen to their whole album. What the band lacks in sonic originality, it more than makes up for with the know-how to write perfect country songs. - Russ Finn
MIKE POSNER Operation: Wake Up Monster Mountain Records The 32 year-old “aging artist” - who has admitted to taking a break years ago due to losing himself to fame seems to be falling back into old traps and vices according to his surprise release Operation: Wake Up, a hip-hop opera that seeks to normalize Posner as a simple man dealing with the aftermath of a break-up (but subtly reminds us he can still rent a mansion to party with his Hollywood friends). The jazz-hop influenced record is far from perfect but Posner’s choice of recording in his folks’ basement as opposed to the glitz and glamour of an expensive studio was admirable; having said this, his attempt at going off the beaten path of commercialism failed. Posner clearly does not want to alienate his fan base and take outrageous risks - he graciously gives us a warning at the beginning of the album, almost as if he wants us to forgive him before we press play. Ironically enough, the most commercial and mostly vocal-free tracks are the only ones worth giving a second listen to. While the effort is appreciated, Operation: Wake Up comes off as a mask that Posner is still not ready to remove. - Freddie Bourne
Blues with Bragin ELIZA NEALS Black Crow Moan E-H Records Detroit-based blues powerhouse Eliza Neals returns with Black Crow Moan which kicks off with “Don’t Judge the Blues.” Mike Puwal’s heavy guitar sets the tone well for the album. “Why You Ooglin' Me” offers more phenomenal guitar playing from Puwal as Neals sings about a man who can’t keep his eyes off her. A guest appearance from Joe Louis Walker on “The Devil Don’t Love You” offers some funky guitar at the beginning that fits well with the mood of the song and the organ from Bruce Bears adds a nice touch. Neals’ melancholy keyboard playing on “Watch Me Fly” offers a nice contrast to the lyrics about rising to your feet after a setback. The top-notch guitar playing from Howard Glazer soars throughout the song. The guitar masterclass from Glazer continues with “River is Rising.” “Run Sugar Run” features excellent drumming from Jeffrey “Shakey” Fowlkes. Walker returns on the title track with guitar reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Keyboard playing from Neals balances nicely with stellar guitar playing from Derek St. Holmes on “Never Stray.” The album closes with “Hey, Take Your Pants Off,” a love song. This “light beer” pours a mostly clear, light orange hue. Because it is light, it doesn’t require a great deal of hops to balance out the malt, and I think Bells has done a great job finding that balance. Light hops bitterness on the palate and still a nice full hops aroma on the nose. If you are looking for an IPA, but want to keep things light, go with the Bells.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25
A decent white head tops this IPA and slowly dissipates. Smelling the beer offers a moderate amount of hop presence. The initial tasting seems balanced, but more of the bitter hop flavors come through in the finish. While many brewers try to push higher alcohol content, this lower calorie and lower alcohol IPA works well as a session beer. Pair it with foods like pork loin, feta cheese or something sweet like caramel corn.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5
This beer pours a hazy gold color with pretty good carbonation. I like the aroma; it smells like orange peel with grapefruit in the hops, along with some pine. It's also a bit creamy, another plus. I've never tasted a low-calorie IPA (110 calories, to be exact) but always been a Bell’s fan and this one delivers.

To change things up we have a very refreshing cider from Virtue Cider. Made from handpicked Michigan apples and blended with a barrel-aged cider, this cider pours a crystal clear straw color with a nice fizzy effervescence. It is very light on the palate, not too sweet and finishes with a lasting tartness on the back of the tongue. If you are a cider drinker, you should put this on your shopping list.

A thin white head evaporates immediately when poured into a traditional English pub glass. The scent of apples permeates the nose. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue initially, followed by some sweetness and sour notes from the apples. Pair it with burger sliders, a roast, or Cheddar cheese with crackers. Feel free to add it to your favorite apple pie recipe or serve it with a slice of apple pie or drink it with breakfast.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This beverage looks like a Bud Light with no head. I'm not a fan of ciders but this one is decent. I like the rich apple flavor and unlike some other ciders, it doesn't taste like bad wine to me. Overall, it's crisp and refreshing and something I think I would enjoy after mowing grass on a hot day.

Pours a deep amber with a thin white head and a slight haziness. It is described as having a unique blend of hops to bring out grapefruit, passion fruit, tangerine and apricot. I found myself wanting to find those aromas and flavors in abundance, but they are subtle at best. Overall, it has a nice balanced flavor - just the right amount of hops to balance the malty sweetness. If you are looking for a hazy, juicy IPA that bursts with the flavors described above, this may not be for you. If you are looking for a solid IPA with a nice flavor profile, give this a try.

A thick white head crowns this IPA and stays for a long time. Fruity citrus notes from the hops fill the nose. Bitter hop flavors hit the tongue first, followed by some sweetness and more citrus flavors like grapefruit, tangerine, passion fruit and apricot in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to drink this seasonal beer while available. Pair it with dishes like fish tacos or a meat lovers pizza.

This beer is a slightly hazy copper color with strong carbonation. The aromas of passion fruit, orange, and grapefruit are all there. It's heavy on the tropical fruit, with a solid layer of passion fruit, melon, and grapefruit. Hands down, this is a really smooth IPA from a great brewery up in Indy. Bonus points for a 7.5% ABV.
