LETTER FROM THE GO TEAM OFFICE 2010 IS HERE, AND NATURALLY we tend to look back at the previous year and, since we’ve seen the passing of the first decade of this still-new millennium, it’s natural to reflect on the ten most recent trips around the sun leading up to now.

One such reflection on the past is just how quickly our children have grown; those tiny Casey McCoy infants back at the beginning of the new Promotions century are now well into elementwary Coordinator school, are active in sports and other extracurricular activities and as quickly as they’ve reached the age of nine or ten, as parents, we’ll again be astonished that in seemingly no time, they’ll be wearing a cap and gown, receiving a diploma, and registering for college courses.

Time marches on, as the old saying goes. And instead of dwelling on the past, as tempting as is may be, we here at Go Team are looking to the future and the possibilities 2010 hold for our ongoing celebration of area youth competitors.

We will continue to feature not only the high profile sports such as varsity football, basketball and soccer, but also the kids who compete at the JV or reserve level in sports as varied as wrestling, gymnastics, equestrian sports, archery and other events that don’t get the kind of media attention they deserve.

Go Team has made a point of highlighting the youngsters who participate in events such as these; in fact, we’ve featured a great number of children in non-sporting activities as well:

Theater; dance; chess; band – the young people who rehearse for a play or practice clarinet are putting in the same kind of time and concentration as the athletes – and they deserve to be given a place to let the public know of their commitment and achievements.

In keeping with looking toward the present and the future, Go Team has a revamped website with more fun and useful features than ever before.

GoTeamMagazine.com now has video highlights from a different game each week of the month, and our newlydesigned home page makes viewing and purchasing photographs easier than ever. The site also offers visitors the chance to see where we’ll be and who we’ll be covering; simply click the “View Upcoming Events” tab at the bottom of the home page and follow the link from there.

The addition of video to the site is a natural compliment to the highly visual nature of both the print and Web version of Go Team. Now you can see what happened at the game – whether you were present for it or not – thanks to the folks at WatchEvansville.com, a sort of “You Tube for Evansville.”

Watch Evansville is fast becoming the place to visit for all things local, and so it seemed right that in that spirit, local youth sports and activities should be a part of the content they produce.

So there you have it – a look at the here and now as well the future. Keep reading, keep visiting our Web site, and keep playing!

service endeavor quickly turned into a passion for Evansville Lutheran School boys’ varsity basketball coach, Sean Ferguson. His career began like many other parents: by answering a need at the school his children attended. After two years of junior varsity coaching and now five years of varsity basketball, Ferguson is still as excited about teaching the kids about basketball as he was the first day he ran a practice.

“I love the game and believe it can teach kids so much,” said Ferguson. “I didn’t have any experience when I started, but was fortunate to be able to develop a plan and attempt to make an impact for the school and for the kids.”

Ferguson is enjoying his best season on the bench this year as his ELS Monarchs are 10-1 on the season and have already claimed their own Invitational Tournament Championship, a title that eluded the school for many years.

“Of course it’s fun when your team is winning,” Ferguson said. “But that’s not the number one factor. It’s teaching the kids about commitment and hard work and what it means to be a part of a team.”

Teamwork has to be at the center of every coach’s game plan according to Ferguson.

“Not every one is cut out to play basketball,” Ferguson said. “You’ve got some kids that are better at it than others. The key is to try to bring each kid along in the process and make sure they understand their role on the team. The team has many different roles and it’s important to make sure everyone knows that.”

Ferguson’s number one issue as a coach is getting all of his kids enough playing time.

“We’re committed to trying to get everyone as much playing time as we possibly can,” Ferguson said. “But it’s hard. The game isn’t long enough sometimes to allow a coach to play all 13 players. I have a hard time every year trying to get everyone enough playing time and when I don’t I feel really bad.”

One way that Ferguson is ensuring that all his players get valuable experience is to give each player a starting role in at least one game.

“It’s incredibly meaningful to see a kid’s face light up when you tell him he’s going to start in the next game,” Ferguson said. “The funny thing is that every player, when given that chance, rises to the occasion and performs sometimes better than expected.”

In his seven years of active coaching, Ferguson has seen the players change in their attitude and approach to the game.

“It’s no secret to anyone that kids today play this game year around,” Ferguson explained. “For the ones that have the drive and the determination to play at the high school level, it’s become a requirement.”

Ferguson has also devoted his time to coaching in the Lutheran Developmental League, a program that was started by former ELS Athletic Director Kurt Younghouse. Ferguson gives credit to Younghouse and the LDL program for developing the kids at a younger age.

“The program that Kurt started is now coming up on its fourth year,” said Ferguson.

“We have players on our team that played in that program. It’s definitely been a key part in developing a strong program for the school.”

Besides coaching, Ferguson also manages the team’s website and uses the site as a motivational tool for the kids and a communications tool for the parents. The team’s website can be found at http://www.leaguelineup. com/gomonarchs. The site’s password will have to be emailed to you.

Good habits are developed. Habits are an important type of personal discipline. Of course, there are good and bad habits. A good habit is one where repeated actions of self-discipline produce good results. Personal discipline is often built by doing the little, everyday things.

for financial security is needed because of the responsibility to care for our family. Holding our tongue when we want to say something hurtful will save us heartache later.

We learn consequences. Examples of this concept are readily available, even during the elementary years. School assignments, chores and music practice are all tasks which have consequences if left undone. Poor grades, smelly trash or mistakes at a recital might be the consequence of neglecting a task. Sometimes the best lessons are reinforced by personally experiencing the consequences when we haven’t shown self-discipline.

We master our attitudes. Required, important, needed and expected are all words which describe tasks we encounter throughout life. Waiting for the train at a crossing is required because of safety.

Exercise is important because of health. Planning

Self-discipline is crucial in all areas of life. Teaching your child to build such a pattern of behavior is one of the greatest challenges you face.• Praise your child when he or she is consistent with doing homework on their own.

Developing a self-disciplined lifestyle often goes against our natural tendencies, but is critical to our success and sometimes to our survival. When we do what we need to do, we can grow mentally, physically, intellectually and emotionally. Why is it important to learn self-discipline?

The Really Big Show The Centre, February 13

The Really Big Show "Celebrate Carnival," a benefit for Evansville ARC, is hosted by WFIE 14 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons and talented entertainers from our community as well as some entertaining local dignitaries in song, dance and comedy revue. This program is performed and produced by a virtually all-volunteer cast.

As part of the Victory for Kids 2009-2010 Series, "Harry the Dirty Dog" is coming in for two performances - 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Harry has everything a little white dog with black spots could want. There's just one problem: he HATES taking baths! He hates them so much, in fact, that one morning he runs away. After a wonderful day spent playing in the dirt, Harry gets so grubby that he turns into a little black dog with white spots and returns home to find that his family doesn't recognize him!

This exciting signature fundraising event benefits programs and services of great need at Evansville ARC. The Curtain Call Reception follows the show and offers heavy hors d'oeuvres and deserts; beer, wine and soft drinks; and musical entertainment

Victory for Kids – “Harry the Dirty Dog”

This annual fundraiser for area youth sports and the Boys and Girls Club of Evansville offers a chance for youngsters to meet some of the great figures in Major League Baseball, if only during a two-hour autograph session, which is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The featured guest this year is Hall of Fame St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Bob Gibson – who was the most feared hurler in the game for years, and helped the Cardinals win World Series titles in 1964 and ’67.

Other familiar faces will be Don Mattingly and his son, Preston, Andy Benes, Al Hrabosky, Castle graduate Jamey Carroll and Vincennes Lincoln graduate, Clint Barmes.

Anyone under 21 must attend with an adult. Admission is $20; tickets are available at hotstoveleague.org.
