HELP US HELP YOUR KIDS

“A picture says a thousand words,” as the old saying goes. But a picture with the perfect caption or description of what’s happening in the photo says even more.

Each month, our photographer, Mark McCoy, shoots so many pictures that are so good, often capturing an instant in time when a young competitor is at his or her best. The only problem is that unless we have a team roster – and you can make out the numbers on the uniform – we don’t have any idea about the person’s identity. Why is this important?

Giving context to the photos is important. We want to tell what’s going on in a shot as well as show the action in the picture. Just as importantly, all of the photographs that are in the magazine, and tens of thousands more, are available via our Web site, www.goteammagazine.com. If we don’t have a name to go along with a face, it can be more challenging for family and friends to find their favorite young competitor’s photo using the site’s search functions.

Here’s where we ask for help, particularly from the coaches in the area. Each month, we’ll send out an email with select photographs to the coaches we meet at the various events we attend. All we ask is that you provide us with a name and a brief anecdote, story or item of interest to go along with the photo. It only takes a moment.

We have to thank the coaches who have already helped us with this; your efforts went a long way to providing a fuller, more comprehensive picture of our young competitors than those thousand words told in the pictures themselves.

THIS MONTH WE DEPART FROM THE NORM A BIT TO TELL ABOUT a father/son coaching duo. Both are volunteers within the Harrison baseball system; the father, Charlie Causey, is an assistant on the Varsity team. Son Ryan is the head coach of the Harrison Cub team, which is comprised of 7 th and 8th graders from Harrison’s feeder schools.

Dwayne Causey, Ryan’s older brother, is also into coaching as Ryan’s assistant on the Cub team.

I asked Charlie and Ryan the same questions while the other was out of earshot: Dylan Gibbs Managing Editor

CHARLIE CAUSEY GT: What motivates you as a coach?

CC: I try to motivate the kids, keep ‘em out of trouble. I got involved [in coaching] when my kids got old enough to play, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have Coach Rice (Andrew, Harrison’s Varsity skipper) have me be part of the team.

What is the most important thing you want the kids to learn?

To respect the other players and other people.

Try to have the right attitude. Most of them won’t play ball all their life, so they need to get their education.

What does baseball teach a young person about life?

If they get the right attitude, it can teach them a lot. I spent 21 years in the Army, and I’ll have fun with ‘em and say, ‘This is what we did in the Army; you don’t want to do this…’

What’s been your most proud moment as a coach?

Back in 2000, when we went to the State Final Championship Game. I wish we would’ve won, but that was the first time the school had ever been there. It’s just something you dream of as a little kid.

I was able to be there as a coach, and I loved every minute of it.

Who would you rather have on your team: A supertalented kid who’s a little difficult, or an average player who’ll do anything you ask?

The average player. [The really talented player] can bring the whole team down.

Who do you personally admire most as a fellow coach?

Coach Andy Rice. He’s taught me a lot. He played at Memorial, then he went down to Murray State and played and then he got drafted by the Houston Astros. He’s been at Harrison for 19 years.

RYAN CAUSEY GT: What motivates you as a coach?

RC: Helping out the kids. My job is to get them ready for the high school level. They’re not playing on a little Pony field anymore; they’re playing on regular high school field. So when they get up to Freshman or Reserve ball, they’ll know what to do.

What’s been your most proud moment as a coach?

In ’08, we won it all. We didn’t start out good, but we came back and we won the Cub Championship my first year coaching – it’s not all me – it’s the kids.

Who would you rather have on your team: A supertalented kid who’s a little difficult, or an average What is the most important thing you want the kids player who’ll do anything you ask? to learn?

Ms Foster is an honor student, an excellent multi-sport athlete and was one of a select number of young Americans chosen to represent the United States in international basketball competition as a member of Team USA. The 14-year-old will also be representing the US in Switzerland this summer at the prestigious Swiss All Star Tournament. To find out more “behind the numbers,” we chatted with Ellen recently.

IN THE SENSE THAT IT DOESN’T COME AS EASILY TO YOU OR THAT YOU TRY TO DO EVEN BETTER AT IT? [That I] try to do better.

YOU’RE ALSO AN HONOR STUDENT – HOW DO YOU BALANCE ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS? Academics come before sports, so if I don’t have my homework done, I’ll have to do it before I do my sports.

EF: Trusting and learning others’ strengths and weaknesses.

SO ONCE YOU REALLY TRUST YOUR TEAMMATES, YOU CAN ANTICIPATE WHAT THEY’LL DO NEXT? Yeah.

HOW DO SPORTS HELP YOU OUT IN EVERYDAY LIFE?

It teaches me to be a better person; if I can be a good teammate, I can be good in everyday life.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS, CAREER- AND SPORTS-WISE?

I want to play in the WNBA someday. I have big goals, I guess.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR HOW WERE YOU INVITED A GAME? TO THE 2010 SWISS ALL I don’t have a fancy routine. I’m pretty pumped STAR TOURNAMENT? before I go into any game. I think that whatever I do or however I do it, I’m going to be the best I can be.

YOU PLAY BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND RUN TRACK; WHICH IS THE MOST CHALLENGING? Probably basketball.

I didn’t know about it until I got a letter saying that I’d been invited to an informational meeting [about the event]. Once we got to the meeting, it was more clear; they told us what they wanted, where we could go and everything. There were other places we could choose from; it didn’t have to be the Swiss All Star Tournament. There’s one in the Bahamas… that one [Swiss All Star Tournament] jumped out more than the others.

Ellen’s very proud to be representing her town and her country, and she’s looking forward to further developing her talents at both special events such as the Swiss All Star Tournament and in high school, which she begins in the fall.

Finding someone you enjoy spending time with and trust.

What are the basic points about friendship we can teach our children that will help them start and grow meaningful friendships?

Friendships add meaning to life. From the earliest memories each of us can recall, there are particular individuals who define times, places or circumstances in our past. We associate enjoyable times with the people who shared the experience with us. The names of “best” friends may change, but the closeness of shared experiences always remains. Friends add meaning to our lives by their gift of friendship.

The friendship choices we make affect us in many ways. Children sometimes attach a great deal of importance to having a particular friend or being included in a certain group. They believe happiness or significance will be achieved through building just the right relationship. The individuals we wish to call friends may influence us to change in some way to become “suitable.” Our response to those pressures is critical. The people we include in our inner circle of influence—our friends—contribute greatly to our attitudes, behavior and style of building future relationships.

“RUNNING FORWARD”

Despite the tragedy of her mom’s death during her freshman year in high school, Lacey Orth, now a senior at North High School, has become quite an accomplished young woman. She first made Semi State in cross country as well as State in the mile in track her first year in high school. The last time she spoke with her mom was over the phone during city Regionals at Central High School, which naturally Lacey won. Her mom had told her that she loved her and it was at that moment that Lacey recalls “I knew she’d always be there for me in spirit.” Unfortunately, her mom lost her battle with cancer that night and Lacey wasn’t there to say goodbye.

We expect to have to bury our parents at some point in our lives, but not during our childhood.

Try to imagine the gut wrenching pain and absence of losing a parent while looking forward to what is supposed to be some of the best years of your life and when you will need your parents the most. This is especially true for a daughter needing her mother; left is a void that can never truly be filled.
