est Franklin Street will once again serve as the venue for Eville Shindig - the historical backdrop and ease of parking make it the perfect setting for this type of show. Based on feedback and early interest, McCarty is expecting more than double the amount of cars and people this year. He's booked more bands as well as a couple of beloved TV personalities to keep everyone fully entertained. Ultimately, he thinks Eville Shindig has the potential to become as big as the long-running Frog Follies at the Vanderburgh 4-H Center.
Eville Shindig creator/organizer Bob McCarty couldn't have been more pleased with last year's inaugural event. From the perfect weather to the enthusiastic crowds, everything went according to plan and set the stage for an even bigger and better traditional car, truck and motorcycle show early next month. "Last year turned out awesome - we had about 200 cars and 3000 people that came from all over the country," he says. "The biggest thing is that there was a ton of feedback on our Facebook page - everybody had a blast and told me that it was the best car show they've ever been to." More than anything, McCarty wants to thank everyone who attended and supported last year's Shindig and helped turn his dream into a reality.
most anticipated additions to the 2017 event are the scheduled appearances of Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster from The Munsters) and Dennis Gage (host of My Classic Car). Patrick will be at the Shindig all day with an exact replica of Dragula, the famous "coffin car" as seen in the classic 60's TV series. He'll sign autographs for a fee, too. Originally from the Evansville area, Gage will be on sight to film the Shindig for an episode of his very popular TV show which is broadcast around the world.

act: Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea Stadium in 1971. And they did it faster than the Beatles, with fans snapping up tens of thousands of tickets in just 72 hours. Even more impressive, the original Flint, MI trio comprising guitarist Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher had only been together for a few years at that point, building a massive following solely on the strength of early album sales and raucous live shows with nary a hit single to their credit. But all that would change in 1973. An American Band, featuring the hook-laden, classic rock title track, sent the group soaring to the top of the charts. More hits followed, including two inspired covers - "LocoMotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" - that are still played at weddings and on radios across the country to this very day. But with massive success came an endless string of financial troubles as the band's manager siphoned off the lion's share of the royalties. By the early 80s, with music trends changing and exhaustion setting in, the guys called it quits. They would reunite in the mid-90s for a welcome return to the stage but Farner eventually left to pursue a solo career. Brewer and Schacher have kept the fire burning ever since, touring with former .38 Special vocalist Max Carl, former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick and keyboardist Tim Cashion (Bob Seger, Robert Palmer). Nearly 50 years on, Grand Funk Railroad remain the template for classic rock, truly embodying the sound of an American band. Drummer Don Brewer kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the band's show with Nashville blues-rock duo The Cold Stares (originally from the Evansville area) at the beautiful Lincoln Amphitheatre.

Drummer Don Brewer on writing a classic rock anthem, working with producer Todd Rundgren, "Some Kind of Wonderful" and more The early years of the band were utterly non-stop. Did you sleep at all? [Laughs] Well, I tell you, it was during the time when you were under contract to the record company - everything changed as you got into the late 70s, early 80s. But in the early 70s, we were under contract to produce two records and two tours every year. We'd go into rehearsal for a few weeks and get everything knocked out. Back then you didn't spend years in the studio making a record - you spent a few days: a couple of days doing the tracks, a day doing overdubs and a day mixing. Then we would go back into rehearsal immediately after that and then go out on the road. Maybe two or three weeks later, the record would come out and we'd be out on the road doing 40 shows in 40 days. That's where I got the line in the song "We're an American Band" - "out on the road for 40 days." Then we would take a couple weeks off and then go back in the studio. We did that for about six years and then we'd had it [laughs]. Prior to 1973's "An American Band," you had only contributed a few songs to the band. Explain how you then end up penning one of the most iconic classic rock songs of all time. When we got to that particular point in our career with lawsuits flying from our manager Terry Knight and we were basically broke, we had to start pumping out hit records. The music business had changed from being album-oriented to a hit format, and we had to come up with three minute songs. I'm sitting there going, 'I can take a shot at this.' It was really out of desperation. We were flying around from town to town, and I had this thought in my head - "We're coming to your town / We'll help you party down." And I put all three chord changes that I know how to play into it [laughs]. I actually didn't come up with the famous tag "We're an American band" until I had finished writing the song. I wasn't trying to wave a flag or anything, that's just what we are - I was writing the song about us: "Up all night with Freddy King playing poker / Four young chiquitas in Omaha / Sweet, sweet Connie in Little Rock."

The album of the same name was produced by the legendary Todd Rundgren. Some artists have found him to be a little difficult to work with. What was your experience like? I loved working with Todd. We became good friends - he stayed with me when we were recording the record, and I've been up to his house in Woodstock. Up until that point with that record in 1972 when we recorded it, we had been doing very old school recording in Cleveland, OH, with an old school engineer and old school equipment. But rock and roll was becoming very modern. In New York and Los Angeles, they were using way more advanced equipment and advanced recording techniques. When we brought in Todd it was like a light switch went on - like, 'whoa, listen to this!' I just thought Todd was tremendous. I could see where people would take him as being a little egotistical or removed and so forth - but that's just him. "Some Kind of Wonderful" is a song that had already been recorded twice before but didn't make much of an impact on the charts. Why did you decide to cover it in 1974? "Some Kind of Wonderful" is a song that we grew up with hearing the Soul Brothers Six. There was a black station in Flint called WAMM - played all R&B music, and they used to play that song. As we got going with Grand Funk, we would tend to use it as an a cappella warm-up song in the car on the way from the hotel to the venue. So, I'd just start singing [breaks into song], "I don't need a whole lots of money" and we'd just clap our hands and everybody would sing the choruses. Our manager said, 'you should go into the studio and cut that.' This was around 1974-75 and disco was coming. We needed to stay on the radio but we couldn't do disco music. So we went back to our R&B roots. And that's the version of that song that everybody knows. It's got to be the most played wedding reception song in the world. So it was really something that just came together organically. To me, that's what's been lost in the music business. What's missing in music today is going into the studio and trying to make magic. It's more than just writing a song; it's more than just having a producer and the equipment. You're trying to make a little piece of magic. And when it happens, you can hear it; you can feel it; you can smell it. It's in the air, and it's happening.

O
ne of country music's most enduring stars, Alan Jackson has sold over 80 million albums and racked up over 30 number one singles throughout his legendary career. Songs like "Chattahoochee," "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," "Drive," "Don't Rock the Jukebox" and many more have become standards, ensuring that the Georgia native's musical legacy will live on for years to come. But he's not going anywhere anytime soon. Angels & Alcohol, released in 2015, proved that Jackson's still got some serious songwriting chops, and his wry sense of humor remains intact as evidenced by the rather amusing closing track, "Mexico, Tequila & Me."
At this stage in your career, is it difficult to find the kind of songs that you enjoy singing in Nashville especially considering the pop trend in country music? No, because people write them and then nobody cuts them. Singers aren't choosing those types of songs around here. But a lot of my friends write that kind of stuff - I sort of have a community of people who are into that kind of stuff and write that kind of stuff, and they know that that's my thing.
Jackson's live shows continue to be a huge draw and he's bringing along a truly talented special guest on the "Honky Tonk Highway Tour." Lee Ann Womack is one of the few traditional country stars left out there; right from her first single, 1997's "Never Again, Again," it was clear that she idolized country music's leading ladies Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Barbara Mandrell. 2000's "I Hope You Dance" took her sound in a more pop direction - and won her legions of new fans in the process - but since then she's returned to an increasingly more traditional approach to her music, most fully realized on 2014's highlyacclaimed The Way I'm Livin'.
You're an excellent songwriter - "If You're Ever Down in Dallas, "Am I the Only Thing You've Done Wrong," for example - but you mostly use outside writers. Is there a stockpile of Womack songs just lying around? There are some that I've had for quite a while, because I started writing as soon as I came to Nashville. For some reason, I'm always reluctant to cut my own songs, because I always think, 'why would I cut a song I wrote if I can cut one that Dean Dillon wrote?' [laughs] So, yes, I've got a bunch of them stockpiled and I usually put a few on each record, but we've got such great songwriters here who don't sing and don't make records. So especially when it comes to traditional country things there are just so many songs out there that need to get cut.

into the pop charts? You know, I love for anybody to buy the records or want to hear them - to be a fan. I wouldn't care what kind of station I was getting played on or what kind of people were coming to the shows [laughs]. That's really what I want. Willie Nelson is like that - people like him whether they like other country music or not. I'm just thankful to have any audience. It seems like you've been counted out at least a few times and yet you keep coming back - on your own terms, most importantly. Have you ever been truly worried about the state of your career? I'm not one of those artists that gets panicky when they're not in the spotlight, because it's not just a business to me it's like a calling, something that I have to do. I just make music when I'm moved to make music. I also have a life - I have two kids. There are just different times when I need to be at home and live my life so I have things to write about. So, I don't mind those "quiet years." What's your connection to Alan Jackson - are the two of you friends? Yeah, we're friends and have a lot of mutual friends. He and I have always

loved traditional country music there's just not that many of us in the business now. When I made my first record, I had a song called "Never Again, Again" and Alan just loved it and spoke about it a lot in his interviews. So, we've always been connected and always been fans of each other's work. The Way I'm Livin' is the sort of album that an artist could retire on - please don't retire, by the way. Are you working on a follow-up? Yes, we've just finished a new album that will be out in October, so I've been working on that. I grew up in east Texas, and I went back there to Houston to record in the studio where George Jones did all of his first stuff and got his sound. I wanted the record to really reflect where I was from and why I got involved in music in the first place. You know, my dad was a disc jockey at a country music station and so that's where I learned all about country music. The album is really reflective of all that. And does it continue your move toward a more traditional approach? It does - The Way I'm Livin' was my first record with a more independent sort of spirit to it and it was the first time I said, 'you know what, I just can't try and please radio anymore.' That's not the direction I really ever wanted to go in - and certainly not now. This is for country music fans and not for the industry.

e may be nearly two months away from the opening night of the Evansville Philharmonic's 2017-2018 season, but tickets are going fast for the much-anticipated performance of bluegrass legend, Béla Fleck. Named after three great twentieth century composers (Bartók, Webern and Janácek), the American banjo virtuoso is considered one of the elite musicians of our time. So, it's no surprise that his upcoming collaboration with Maestro Savia and the Orchestra is generating a lot of excitement from all around the tri-state and beyond. On paper, Fleck's pairing with the Philharmonic may seem a little odd or unconventional, but the New York native's skills are incredibly diverse as evidenced by

the banjo concerto the Nashville Symphony commissioned him to write in 2010. The threemovement work subtitled "The Impostor" displays a keen ability to write for a wide variety of instruments and compose a piece with identifiable musical structures and development. Reviews of Banjo Concerto No. 1 and Fleck's initial performance with the Cleveland Orchestra were glowing - and now we're just weeks away from experiencing this esteemed work firsthand. Fleck, known for his quick wit, did not disappoint when discussing the nickname of his commissioned work. "I often do feel like an impostor, and if anyone ever figured out the truth, I’m certain that I’d be ejected, immediately," he said. "So maybe the banjo

In addition to Fleck's anticipated performance, Toyota's Opening Night will feature works by Richard Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier Suite) and Jacques Offenbach (Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld), incorporating two of the most popular dances of the 19th century - the Waltz and the Can Can. Plus, the Orchestra will take on French composer Maurice Ravel's iconic Boléro, a haunting theme popularized by its inclusion in the 1979 film 10 starring Bo Derek. Originally composed as a ballet in the late 1920's, the piece, which includes an ingenious 13-minute crescendo, has gone on to become one of symphonic music's greatest hits. Three decades of music: Beloved jam band ready to give tri-state fans the "run around"
F
ormed 30 years ago in Princeton, NJ, Blues Traveler have made their mark both on the charts and on the stage, gaining a reputation as one of the most exhilarating live acts around. The jam band known for the pop hit "Run Around" off of 1994's Four continues to draw big crowds across the country, even encouraging fans to make and trade recordings of shows (just so long as no money is exchanged). For the eighth year running, Shorty's Bar and TJ's Stockyard Inn will stage an all-day party headlined by Evansville's biggest band of all time, The C.R.O.W.D., plus a host of area favorites. Entrance to BAD is FREE - and so is the food! However, organizers are calling on generous business owners in the community to donate whatever items they can for a charity auction to help the bikers help others. Money raised from the auction will go directly toward off-setting the cost of events for the bikers' multiple charities. Largest Pre '49 Street Rod event in the world held right here in the tri-state every summer August and September are THE months for fans of old cars, beginning with one of the most popular events that the tri-state has ever seen: E'ville Iron Frog Follies. This rod run for street rod owners started quite modestly back in 1975, but over the course of four decades, it has grown by leaps and bounds. In fact, as of 2010, it's officially been recognized as the largest Pre '49 Street Rod event anywhere in the world with over 4000 vehicles! People of all ages come from all over the U.S. and beyond to be a part of this threeday gathering. What makes Frog Follies such a good time is that there's something for the whole family to enjoy, including games, activities and dances during the weekend as well as plenty of food and drinks available for purchase with proceeds going to local charities. Since its inception, E'ville Iron has donated over two million dollars to worthy causes and organizations, even scholarships to High School graduates looking to pursue a career in the automotive industry. But let's talk more about the street rods. As noted, all vehicles must be Pre '49; also, the car or truck must have some sort of modification to the vehicle that was not available to the car from the factory. Keep in mind that the Frog Follies automotive swap meet is one of the largest in the U.S. It has plenty of new parts to build your new street rod along with plenty of rusty parts and collectibles to satisfy your appetite for automobilia!

1. Marinade ribs up to 12hrs ( 2hr minimum) with 12oz bottle of Ayinger beer, sliced onion, two clove smashed, garlic, and 1/4 cup of olive oil. 2. Remove ribs, dry thoroughly with paper towel, and apply rub covering all sides. 3. Smoke at 275-300 degrees using a mix of charcoal and mesquite chips for four-eight hours or until tender. 4. While the ribs are smoking, take left over marinade and combine with 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup mustard, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup Worcestershire and salt& pepper to taste. Thoroughly combine ingredients and heat over medium heat for 15-20mins. Serve on side with ribs.

Your favorite spirit doesn’t have to be only in that perfect summer drink… turn that cocktail into a marinade and bring two of your favorite things together! Concocting a marinade out of your favorite drink or pairing the food with a certain alcohol will bring out a whole different flavor and taste profile you may not have expected. As a marinade, alcohol will act as a natural tenderizer. Especially when added to a fruit juice, the bath will diffuse and create a balance of sweet and rich flavoring. A rule of thumb for pairing your food is: think in color. A red wine or dark liquor will usually complement a red meat or hardy red-sauced pasta – pair Mirassou Pinot Noir with BBQ. White wine or clear alcohols like gin
will pair with poultry, seafood or white-sauced pasta - pair Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc with grilled tilapia. But never be afraid to break the mold, let YOUR palate be your guide! fter opening a location in Owensboro, owners Sarah and Joseph Kim decided to bring the flavors of Korea to the Main Street walkway in Evansville. Open since April 1, Gangnam Korean BBQ serves a carefully crafted, authentic menu with fresh ingredients and house-made dishes. Located in the historic building that formerly housed Maingate Bar & Grill, the restaurant's ambiance feels like a short trip to a larger city, and the bar boasts the option to watch the sushi chef at work while enjoying one of over thirty craft beers or an extensive line of Korean spirits such as Soju, a sweet rice vodka. Flat-screen TVs flank large booths with a private feel, plenty of tables provide seating for parties, and low, colorful lighting gives a relaxing glow. My first visit provided the total experience. The sushi chef started on two specialty rolls while Sarah enthusiastically whipped up a few of their most popular dishes. The Crazy Salmon arrived first - a hefty roll stuffed with avocado and roe, wrapped in warm, tender salmon and drizzled with a variety of sauces. Spot-on, the flavor combination was delicious, light, and the pieces were manageable. The Volcano came next, and the taste definitely lived up to the presentation - jumbo shrimp rolled into a mound, coated with crunchy tempura flakes, sauces, and green onions. Highly recommended.
The next dish - Pork Bulgoki - is a sweet and spicy traditional dish, made with marinated Berkshire cutlets, scallions, sweet peppers, and fresh garlic, cooked to order and served with rice. I fell in love immediately, and even though it was a shared dish, I still had plenty to take home. Of course, I had to save room for Beef Sizzling Bibim-Bap - thinly-sliced, flavorful strips of beef, seasoned vegetables and spinach, mixed with chili pepper paste, served in a sizzling rock pot of rice and topped with an egg. And for the grand finale... Korean Fried Cake tempura-battered, deep-fried cheesecake drizzled with syrup and dolloped with whipped cream and maraschino cherries. Save room for this concoction! While most people don't give a second thought about their beer choice to the type of barbecue they are having, I'm here to give a few choices on how to bring your backyard barbecue to the next level. Grilled Chicken - Brooklyn Sorachi Ace. This classic, unfiltered golden saison has a clean malt flavor that is extremely versatile in the kitchen and is perfect with the light, juicy char of grilled chicken. It’s super easy to drink during the summer and for a moment, you almost forget you’re drinking a 7.5% farmhouse ale! The strong, spicy Belgian yeast strain kicks in at the finish and begins an endless cycle of, “I need another bite. I need another drink. I need another bite. I need another drink.” Grilled Steak - Oskar Blues IPA. This IPA has a tropical, passion fruit, and pineapple aroma with clean malty backbone. When pairing an IPA with a grilled steak caramelization is key. Caramelization will help bring out the caramel hop base, while the hop flavor and bitterness will amplify the salty,meaty flavors. Plus, bonus love, they’re in a can! Barbecued Ribs - Ayinger Altbarisch Dunkel . This dunkel is well-rounded and light bodied. The aroma is sweeter with coffee tones and hints of dark fruits which is why pairing this with a rack of ribs slathered in a rich barbecue sauce is the way to go. he family-friendly “Making of a Racehorse: Let’s Get Started” series has resumed for the 2017 Ellis Park meet, which runs through Labor Day, with racing Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, plus Sept. 4.

The free fan-education program begins at 7:30 a.m. Central every Saturday through August, with the public invited to simply show up in the south end of the Ellis Park parking lot (past the clubhouse and closest to the Ohio River bridges), where the starting gate is positioned for morning school in the mile chute leading into the first turn.

Love, peace & unity: Acoustic folk duo offers simple, heartfelt message on self-titled debut photos by: JOSH CORNELIUS
I
n times like these, when everyone seems to be taking sides and divisiveness rules the day, it's nice to know that the Honey Vines are here to spread some good vibes around. The popular acoustic duo featuring local music veteran Andrea Wirth and relative newcomer Melanie Bozsa has spent the last few years forging a deep connection with tri-state music fans via intimate performances at area restaurants, community benefits and festivals. "There's not a lot of separation between us and our audience," Wirth says. "We don't approach our shows like that - we're right there with you." That one-on-one mindset has served the Honey Vines well off the stage, too. Over the last year, they've been busy expanding their music education program - which includes Beginner Guitar, Beginner Piano and Songwriting Sessions - at their cleverly-named Honey Vinyl Studio in Newburgh, increasing from 25 to 65 students after acquiring much-needed extra square footage. The duo's ability to inspire and foster creativity in the area's youth has been a big part of their success. "It was our mission to make this studio a place of discovery and exploration - not so much a practice, practice, practice sort of thing," Bozsa explains. "We hope that we can provide a fire for our students." Turns out, the inspiration has been mutual. Spurred on by the remarkable progress of the kids - and particularly motivated by the current political climate - the Honey Vines have created beautiful music together on their self-titled debut, eight tracks of love, peace and unity with a healing message. "Sometimes you feel like you just have to share something positive," Wirth explains, referring to the often nasty discourse filling the airwaves these days. "You see the marble going down the drain and you just want to put a

stopper in it." Clearly, the community is on board with the duo as evidenced by the support shown at last month's album release party in Newburgh. Fans were given a copy of the CD and a few drink tickets and then treated to a live performance that, in addition to album material, included some bluesy, rock-based tracks set aside for stylistic reasons - songs that may well appear on a follow-up that Bozsa and Wirth hope to record sooner than later. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Mostly self-produced by Bozsa at Honey Vinyl Studio, the new album features some truly fantastic vocal harmonies and expressive guitar work. Songs like the rootsy "Give Your Heart" just ooze authenticity with lyrics that touch on societal unrest and the eternal quest for acceptance: "Children are cryin' / People livin' in the street / Searchin' for love to find some restful peace." "World Full of Sides," lyricallyinspired by the seemingly daily barrage of hate-crimes and mass shootings, pleads for listeners to take a look at the big picture and act responsibly: "This is a world full of sides / Full of angles and black holes / Fire and brimstone / But we can decide." Other highlights include "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Don't Leave This World Behind," the latter clearly influenced by Simon & Garfunkel but sweetened with more than a few drops of honey. It all adds up to an album with universal appeal. Now it's up to Wirth and Bozsa to make the most of their moment in the sun. "We want to take it as far as it can go and license it for television, commercial spots - maybe see if we can find a publicist. We're going to open up as many windows as we can." Thunder/ Dreamer Local post-rock quartet capturing national attention with powerful third album
I
t's been a steady climb for local band Thunder/ Dreamer, and the momentum just keeps building. What started out as a solo project of front man Steven Hamilton has become a tour de force their blood, sweat, and tears have gained them a solid fan base throughout the Midwest and national attention, topped with global nods. After signing with indie label 6131 Records and touring this past May, T/D released their third album, Capture, spawning recognition that has allowed them to share the stage with some pretty big names - they're slated to perform with the likes of Phantogram, Dr. Dog, and Bishop Briggs at the Fountain Square Music Festival in Indianapolis this October. And it's not just fans that are picking up on their singular sound - Capture has been featured and reviewed favorably by well-known and respected publications such as Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Entertainment Weekly. Of course, the band remains as grateful and humble as ever, basking but not letting the attention take away from their easy-going roots and intimacy with their fans. When they're not on the road or playing the occasional local show, they're practicing, writing new material, and doing regular things like working day jobs and supporting other talent. For percussionist Corey Greenfield, future plans seem simple enough - "We would love to be able to write, record, release and gig as much as possible, and for this endeavor to remain sustainable," he says. "If we can spend the majority of our time creating, that would be a great success in my book." WAX ASTRO Location, location, location: Former Evansville-based garage rock band feeling at home in Kentucky
O
ne of the city's most promising young bands has headed for greener pastures. Wax Astro - a name born from singer/guitarist Jake Tapley's fascination with space combined with a reference to the mythological story of Icarus' melting wings - are gearing up for a busy August both here and in their new home base in Louisville. In addition to a number of live shows on the horizon, the guys are finally ready to release Free Play (August 11), an album that's been generating a lot of interest online courtesy of two conceptual videos for the tracks "Menรกge A Trois" and "Hiccup" - both by first-time director Mikael Drobny and photographer Nick Ebertz. Tied together by the ongoing relationship drama of an unlucky-inlove astronaut, the clips make a striking and entertaining accompaniment to the raw, yet melodic garage rock soundtracks. Recorded in the spring of 2016 at Clockwork Sound Studios in Evansville, Free Play finds Tapley, lead guitarist Garrett Hunter, bassist Nigel Meyer and drummer Jake Jones upping the tempos and moving away from the sound of their Americanainspired debut, Figure 1. It comes off as a natural and welcome evolution. "On the first album, Nigel and I joined a band that was

already established," Hunter explains. "We were putting our own touches around this singersongwriter folk stuff. Since then we've been writing songs more collaboratively." The energy that producer Clark Osborne has infused the new songs with translates to the stage in a big way. In turn, invitations to play live have increased, particularly now that Wax Astro are stationed in a city where opportunities for original bands abound. "The amount of possible shows has skyrocketed," Jones says. "We're turning down offers at this point the more places we play, the more people ask us to play at other places." Wax Astro's forward momentum has always been propelled by Tapley, who started playing acoustically around town back in 2012. He asked Jones to join him on drums and after corralling another musician friend or two, christened the group Go Nuclear, a "rockabilly, folk-punk kind of thing" that, with the addition of a viola player, developed a laidback, alt-country vibe. Eventually, Meyer, a USI student at the time, and his old Hamilton Heights High School friend Garrett, got involved and after

some initial indecision, fully committed to the project. The new collective recorded Tapley's early batch of songs at Clockwork and played an album release show, but they were already looking ahead. "What has always happened to us is that by the time we put out something new, we've already been working on newer stuff that we're more excited about - we're already moving on to the next thing," Tapley says. The same holds true with Free Play. The album hasn't even dropped yet and the band is already busy working on new material. Still, they'll be playing plenty of tracks off of it in the next few months, beginning with back-to-back album release shows on August 11 and 12 at PG and Mag Bar in Evansville and Louisville, respectively. On August 25, they'll venture to Al's Bar in Lexington. Clearly, relocating the band has paid off. "We kind of feel like moving to Louisville has given us a fresh start especially with the new sound," Meyer says. "It's like a new birth for the band." EVENTORS: what's wrong with you, man? Local comedy troupe changing the face of nightlife, bringing different style of entertainment to the tristate L-R: MILAN, HAYES, BRUST
N
o joke, comedy is making a comeback in the tri-state - slowly, but surely. For a while, we were blessed with clubs like the Funny Bone and more recently, the Joke Factory, but support for them ultimately fizzled; the laughter died. Over the last couple of years, however, there's been a resurgence with a number of area bars adding comedy to their nightlife schedules. Bokeh Lounge in downtown Evansville is a good example. In fact, not only is the Haynie's Corner hotspot promoting comedians, its spawning them, too. Back in 2016, a couple of the bar's employees - inspired by the acts performing on stage each week - started riffing off of each other every night after work; "party time" as Corey Brust and Toran Milan refer to it. These two wild and crazy guys (Steve Martin, anyone?) would hang with friends till the wee hours of the morning, jokes flying fast and furious in an endless improv session. "Toran would create a monster right here," Brust says, pointing to himself while struggling to hold back laughter. "I would antagonize him through the night," Milan admits with an evil grin. Often, as the story goes, he'd look at Brust in mock disgust and ask, 'what's wrong with you, man?' A light bulb eventually went off. "The idea was to use whatever happened in our daily lives and put it in a small skit," Brust explains. "We did that on video first, but now we feel that we can bring

something different to the stage in terms of comedy." After a couple of early test runs which involved primarily unrehearsed "What's Wrong With You, Man?"-style routines, the guys began to refine their approach. They also connected with a local comedic powerhouse. Enter Chris "Knubsie Slow" Hayes, a stand-up from the south side of Evansville who has performed in Bloomington, Louisville, Cincinnati and St. Louis. "We brought him in because he has a passion for comedy," Milan says. "I think he's the funniest comedy writer I've ever come across. His stand-up is good, but his writing is much better." With Hayes in the fold, the Eventors - as they began referring to themselves - started plotting a whole new style of show, a themed "dress-up" evening with a little bit of everything thrown in. Defcon Red, their inaugural event at Ri Ra Irish Pub last February, featured DJ Jones Capone, jazz music and stand-up. They upped their game the following month by transforming Bokeh Lounge into 1920's-era New York City with a Gatsby-esque night of swing dancing, comedy and the smooth sounds of local musician Monte Skelton. They plan to revisit the Gatsby theme at Delkers in Henderson this month with a show called 'Speakeasy'. "We're going to these bars and bringing a different style of entertainment," Milan explains. Other "What's Wrong With You, Man?" events have been staged at places like PG

with a mix of sketch comedy and music and no shortage of crowd participation. "If you're in our audience, you're going to get involved," Milan says. The Eventors also helped to plan a Gretchin Irons Ultimate Clue Dinner at the Hadi Shrine Temple late last month. Currently, the guys are working on season two of their web series in conjunction with All Digital Media. Based on the "What's Wrong With You, Man" premise, the filmed skits involve practical jokes, making scenes in public places - anything that cracks them up (check out season one on YouTube). Speaking of cracking up, you can catch a unique dual stand-up show at PG on August 19 when Hayes and Milan try to out-funny each other side-by-side. For the Eventors, that's ultimately what it's all about. "We're not trying to make people laugh - we're trying to make us laugh."

ut about an inch off the cuff of your jeans and then with a pair of tweezers, start to pull the horizontal fibers out, leaving the vertical fringe (It works best if you turn the jeans inside out to be able to see the individual fibers clearly). When both legs are done, put your jeans on and mark where you want the holes to fall with a line. Take them off and snip two horizontal lines about an inch below and above the mark you just created. This time you will pull out the vertical fibers, thus creating the rugged look of distressed denim! Tailgate: Pair with your favorite spirit gear and some sporty sneaks and you have a look that will be the talk of the tailgate.

40 years of racing: Local BMX track celebrating big anniversary with major bash
D
id you know that Evansville is home to one of the best and fastest BMX tracks in the nation? Chances are you didn't, but in fact, George Mason Burdette Park BMX was established in 1977 and forty years on, it's still considered one of the elite courses (rated #32 in the top 40 legendary tracks), hosting local bike racing from early April to October. Burdette also hosts Indiana State level races and has held Midwest Regional and National three-day events which draw hundreds of riders of all skill levels from professional to beginners from all over the U.S. and countless other countries. It's not every day that a celebrated BMX track in our area turns 40, so to mark this momentous occasion, a big birthday bash is being held with all kinds of entertaining activities for all ages. E'ville Showdown will feature a $10,000 Pro-AM/Double Points Race, a raffle, half-pot (50/50), games, bounce houses, fun races and, of course, birthday cake! Plus, there will be a clinic by Vet Pro Matt Pohlkamp. Linda Scott, Burdette Park BMX Club Concessions Manager and self-described "BMX Mom," has been a big supporter of the track. ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT Megan Bowlds & Howie
Appropriately enough, Megan Bowlds and her husband and two kids live across the street from the West Side Pet Hospital here in Evansville - a good spot for a family with a history of rescuing animals. Over the last seven years, they've adopted two dogs and a cat from the VHS. In fact, the latter was a Valentine's Day gift from Megan's husband. Three pets is a lot to handle for any household, but it turns out that the Bowlds had room for one more furry friend - a very special one, indeed. Megan makes it a habit to check the VHS website and recently came across a full-blooded Husky named Howie, a senior with a difficult past. "I read his story, and I cried because he was from a hoarder situation - it just broke my heart," she says. "So I told my husband, 'let's go get him - he's 10 years old and doesn't have much longer.'" Soon, Howie was on his way to a wonderful new life. Reportedly, he's adjusted very well and loves to run up and down the road with Megan despite a bad hip. "I try to keep him really energized," she explains. "You can tell that he just loves his new home." Fun fact: Megan and Howie really like to howl together - "He loves talking and is very bossy when he wants something!" TIMON & PUMBAA: Timon and Pumbaa are just about the most ADORABLE bonded pair of male guinea pigs you ever saw in your life. They are just over a year old. They are Peruvian/Abyssinian mixes with amazing color & hair. It has to be said… Timon looks a little bit like he’s wearing a certain Presidential toupee. He is very Instagram-worthy. Remembering Chris Cornell (Or “My Rare Serious Moment”)
No one wants to suffer. No one wants to feel pain. No one wants to be rejected, or disregarded, or abandoned. Yet, here in Evansville (and all around the world) this happens every day. Compassionate people - Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Agnostics, Atheists, Humanists - whoever - recognize that the foundation for truly ethical behavior is compassion. Compassion asks us to acknowledge the other instead of obsessing with self. Compassion invites us to lay aside our comforts and begin to feel what another feels. Compassion opens the door to change and action that makes life easier for those who carry unbearable burdens. A quick survey of the world around us makes it clear: we need more compassionate people. We need more people to take their eyes and ears and hearts and minds off their own comforts and offer them to those in unbelievable discomfort. Princess Diana told us: “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Kindness is a first step toward compassion and it's one that each of us can take.

A
t the risk of sounding morbid (always a great way to start a conversation, isn’t it?), I’ve wanted to write something about Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and anxiety/ depression in general for quite some time now. The gap in time should be obvious, given that I’m just now mentioning it and he’ll have been gone for nearly two and a half months by the time you read this. But the irony of it is that I myself have felt anxious to write about it. I’ll be perfectly honest - I wasn’t the biggest Soundgarden fan while growing up in the grunge/postgrunge era. Perhaps it was latching on to Nirvana first and judging all bands from the Seattle scene by the standard they brought to the national forefront (despite others existing just as long or longer than the posterboys of plaid-clad angst), perhaps it was liking the somewhat more punk acts than the sludgier groove-laden bands. And while I enjoyed the inarguably talented Mr. Cornell’s vocals on alternative rock radio staples such as “Fell On Black Days” and “Black Hole Sun” (and even some of his output with former Rage Against the Machine members in Audioslave), I never delved into his catalog with the same fervor I did with Kurt Cobain & Co. I’ve never been one to care for celebrity tabloid gossip, but I can’t
help but feel sad when someone who has made such an indelible mark on our culture succumbs to depression, especially someone who has brought so much joy to so many. That sadness comes with a sense of guilt; read the lyrics to the first song I mentioned and ask yourself, “How could we have missed that?” Was there anything we could’ve done? It truly is hard to describe what anxiety and depression are to someone unfamiliar with it. The overwhelming sense of dread and doubt can be paralyzing, and “pulling oneself up by the bootstraps” is far easier said than done. Sometimes there is nothing anyone can say - no single phrase, no dramatic speech, no magic words - that can bring someone out of whatever low point they’re in. But that doesn’t mean we can’t - or shouldn’t - try. Chris once sang, “Words you say never seem/To live up to the ones inside your head.” I dare say the ones we never say can be worse. Take the time to talk to those who need it.

Winnecke/Musgrave Primary Would Be Great Political Theater
Instead of a perfect world, we can strive for a better one There seems to be a rash of horrifying news articles lately regarding child endangerment and neglect, and while these abhorrent occurrences aren't anything new, some would blame the media for sensationalizing them. Maybe I'm participating by choosing this topic, but as Rhett Butler would say, "frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." It's definitely something that deserves attention. Children of abuse often grow up one of two ways - either an outside source steps in and the child is able to utilize their newfound support system to learn from their parents' mistakes while leading relatively "normal" lives, or they follow in the footsteps they were dealt, unable to break the cycle due to a variety of circumstances, including - but not limited to socioeconomic status, addiction, and mental illness. So where do these kids go when they're whisked away from a neglectful home? Unless they're one of the lucky few who have another suitable, capable family member to take care of them, they're placed in the system - group homes, juvenile detention centers, foster care, or - best case scenariothey're adopted, which is unlikely postpuberty in most circumstances. Factor in social workers with unreasonable caseloads, budget cuts that favor the wealthy, and lack of foster homes that take in disadvantaged youth for the

right reasons, and they're often back to square one. Roughly between 400k-700k kids spend time in foster homes every year in the United States. About half are sent back to their former living situation - even so, statistically speaking, the outlook for most is grim. We can throw statistics around all day, but it's an epidemic, and there's no arguing that. In a perfect world, everyone would be loved, sheltered, full, and healthy, but instead of a perfect world, we sure as hell can strive for a better one. I don't claim to know all of the answers, or any, really. I will say this - for those that spend hours outside of clinics harassing pregnant teens seeking help, claiming they will "adopt their unborn child" - I call bullshit. Furthermore, if you'd rather a child get dragged through the system with no chance rather than be adopted by a loving LGBT couple, you're part of the problem. Unfortunately, in both cases, people have the luxury of spouting a "moral compass" collected from archaic doctrine that allows them to say and not do. Disagree? Have any logical, practical arguments? This should be the sentiment echoed by political observers across the tri-state. Reports have indicated that Vanderburgh County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave is not ruling out challenging incumbent Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke in next year's primary. Unquestionably, it would be the most closely watched municipal primary in recent memory. Winnecke has been able to get elected twice in a primarily Democratic city, including a landslide victory for reelection in 2015. There is neither a Democrat nor Republican in the city with enough political capital to dare challenge him - except for Musgrave. Musgrave has quickly become the Donald Trump of Vanderburgh County. The Republican establishment doesn't like her, and her feud with them is well-documented. In last year's primary, Vanderburgh County Party Chairman Wayne Parke endorsed her opponent. Earlier this year, he asked Musgrave to resign as commissioner over her handling of the firing of the Burdette Park Manager. Most recently, Parke removed Musgrave along with her husband as precinct committeemen after it was discovered they donated $500 to Winnecke's opponent, Democrat Gail Riecken. The establishment has underestimated Musgrave at every turn. She's been successful as a candidate and is well-respected in the area. A Winnecke/Musgrave primary would see the most money spent on a primary in the county's history and make for great political theater. "BOY WITH RED SHIRT" by John Thurgood
M
y parents met in Vienna. No, no, I'm glad you asked. It's not intrusive at all. Right, it's in Austria. My mom's maiden name is Hohensinner. Did you know that “Hohen” is a surname of nobility in Austria? Anyway, after she graduated, she went to Vienna to research her ancestry. College. After college, she did all this. My father? No, no, no. With a last name like Thurgood? No, he's an Englishman. Born and bred. He was actually in Vienna searching for some stolen artwork. His expertise was 18th Century oil paintings from Central Europe. He worked for a special unit in MI5 that specializes in stolen artwork. The stolen painting happened to be an Austrian national treasure of sorts. So, it was kind of a big deal. What kind of painting? Small, but striking. It drew you in with candid intimacy and playful lighting. The kind of painting that really stayed with you, you know what I mean? What was it of? It showed a boy crossing a bridge over the Danube in a red shirt. The red shirt had a lot of underlying meaning - not really when it was first commissioned but later, during the first world war. It became a nationalist symbol, of sorts, which of course is incredibly problematic but still an important part of their past, mind you. So anyway, my mom rented a sublet, and after a long flight and a stressful trip across the city, she made it to where she was staying, and when she finally set her bags down and sat on her bed, she noticed a painting on her wall. It showed a boy crossing the Danube in a bright red shirt. She was exhausted. She had been traveling for nearly seventeen hours, but she couldn't pull herself away from that painting. She must have studied it for a solid thirty minutes, which, by the way, is a long time to look at a painting. No, not exactly. That's a really good guess though. My father tried to arrest my mom for art smuggling, first, but then they fell in love, or something like that after they solved the mystery behind the “Boy with Red Shirt” robbery.

Emmy surprises and snubs
E
ach summer, Hollywood gets into a tizzy when the Emmy nominations are released. This year was no different, with critics and fans alike swarming to the Twitterverse, their blogs, and podcasts, to voice their excitement for their favorite actors nominated for a first or sixth time and their disappointment that their favorite show got snubbed because of “Emmy politics” or a new show stealing their favorite show’s thunder. I recently got into Shameless and just finished the 7th season. William H. Macey is spectacular as the drunken, deadbeat dad Frank Gallagher on the HBO show and I'm glad he got nominated for an Emmy. But his costar, Emmy Rossum, who pulls just as much weight in the show as he does, is yet to be nominated. I’m also sad Game of Thrones couldn’t be nominated for anything simply because the start date of their new season was delayed. So, Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark - I named my daughter Sansa, by the way, if that tells you anything about my love for the show - couldn’t be nominated for her amazing portrayal of the growth her character goes through in the treacherous fantasy world. I'm thrilled Netflix’s hit period drama The Crown was nominated. I binge-watched the first season during the first few days after coming home from the hospital post-birth, and I loved it. It's so clever in the way it picks and chooses certain aspects of the royal family’s life. I love that Viola Davis, Robin Wright and Claire Foy were nominated for Drama Actress because the three of them each play incredibly strong and intelligent women in powerful positions in How to Get Away With Murder and The Crown. The nominations also made me realize there are some shows that I still have yet to watch yet that I might like, including Westworld, This Is Us, Fargo, Big Little Lies, The Handmaiden’s Tale, Stranger Things and Better Call Saul. All these shows received a ridiculous amount of nominations and have been getting high praise from critics. - Marisa Patwa For more info, visit emmys.com. Spider-Man is amazing. That’s kind of his whole theme, actually, so it’s not surprising. They don’t compare in many ways, but since they’re the two major superhero movies in theaters right now, I have to say I did enjoy Wonder Woman more. While that film technically has better storytelling, a more tangible and thoughtful theme, tighter action sequences, and surpassing visuals, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a truly wonderful and wellexecuted retake on the coming-of-age story, with lots of revamped nostalgia, and more laughs. Also, it has a far more relatable villain. The interplay between the Vulture and Spider-man is very engaging. And thank goodness it’s not another origins story.

Yet, to me there is this angsty, melodramatic, got-to-prove-myself drama which is interwoven throughout the movie that I see teens probably identifying with a bit more. Not that it isn't relatable. The actor they chose unquestionably captures the Peter Parker fans love so well. The Tony Stark mentorship storyline feels real, sincere, fun, yet not overdone. My kids loved this movie. I loved it too, but just not quite on the same level as others. It passes forward like that so well, though, while I wait with great anticipation for Deadpool 2. - Laura Engram

WALT DISNEY FILMS Right from the outset, with bright colors and landscapes and unforgettable songs, Moana hits Netflix as one of the best, but most underrated Disney films in recent years. My goodness, is it a gorgeous movie. However, on top of that, it is a long-underrepresented story with a captivating theme that is loosely based on real cultural events. The plot, with all its magic of course, is more Polynesian mythology, but the film’s setting comes from a historical place. Beyond being beautifully animated, the overall narrative and characters just make you feel overwhelmingly content - a colorful splash of feel-good - it is very cleverly done. Mischievous counterpoint to heroine Moana, the demigod Maui is the most fun, as well as the most effective foil Disney has had in an animated movie since Aladdin's Genie. For that alone, you should see this movie. See it for the music, and for catchy, delightful songs like “You’re Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go." The film projects those feelings and themes of life and creation and femininity as something incredibly powerful. The story was something both me and my children were enthralled by in the end, all with wide smiles on our faces. - Laura Engram

Katy Perry Witness Capitol Records Katy Perry’s new album, Witness, is a hot mess of inconsistency. Its faint, funky dance vibe is mixed with boring and forgettable lyrics and beats - basically a shoo-in for straight-to-elevator music. Her worst album, the rhythms are monotonous with very little variation. And Perry’s lackluster singing is not at all what we know she is capable of. Even contributions from more relevant artists like Nicki Minaj cannot save this album. Breakout single “Chained to the Rhythm” wasn’t joking. One track I heard a lot, hummed far too often by one of those obnoxious friends who should have known better, was “Miss You More,” in which Perry expresses that she misses someone more than she loved her. I honestly think this and many of the lyrics here are pretty clever, but ultimately simple turns of phrases. And this is as decent as the album gets, unfortunately. Minaj’s stylings sound misplaced over the 90s dance drone of “Swish Swish,” although it’s obvious she really tried to glue it together. We’re shaken violently between techno and smooth jazz like this often throughout Witness, and the final effect is nausea. - Laura Engram
Flogging Molly Life Is Good Spinefarm Life Is Good stands strides ahead of Flogging Molly's disappointing 2011 release. They’re one of the first bands I ever saw in concert with vibrant memories of mosh pits so fierce I was reluctant to jump in - and their music had always been a mixture of melodic, heartfelt, moving, and brash. It feels like we’ve finally journeyed back towards those days of the “Devil’s Dance Floor” and “If I Ever Leave This World Alive.” The traditional Celtic instrumentals which twitter and bellow alongside both whispering and roaring guitars, as well as the occasional group-singing expected of their drinking songs and anthems, all lend to what we know Flogging Molly is about: a sense of belonging. The only song I could do without is “There’s Nothing Left Pt. 1,” which feels somewhat pieced together and rhythmically repetitive, despite some gorgeous ideas which could have gone further. However, as soon as “The Hand of John L. Sullivan” slams out, the ride doesn’t quit. Vocals, violin, accordion, tin whistle, and mandolin harmoniously and raucously carry you through a story of commonality and heart. - Laura Engram

Lorde Melodrama Republic Records Lorde is the type of artist who doesn’t censor her feelings and will consistently spill her guts onto the stark beats she lays out. This is Melodrama, which is literally the lyrics of “Sober II,” one of many enchanting singles within this album. Her graceful yet powerful singing softly counterpoints ethereal rhythms, just barely adorned by symphonic sound as she lets loose lyrically. The album is full of beautiful, soul-defining prose, alongside light and expressive music. The song that sharply stuck me was “Writer In the Dark,” a song about loving wholly and unforgivingly, where Lorde honestly relents, “I am my mother’s child / I'll love you 'til my breathing stops / I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me / But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power / I'll find a way to be without you.” The album is full of brutal matter-of-factness like this. “Liability” is another song of heart-tugging authenticity. “The truth is I am a toy / That people enjoy until… they are bored of me.” It’s unrelenting, deep-seated integrity like this which makes Lorde such a healing listen. - Laura Engram
Gentlemen & Scholars Revelry Self Released A return of heavy, blues-based rock bands seems to be in full swing right now, and as someone who grew up listening to bluesinfluenced rock, I am perfectly fine with that. Southern Indiana’s own Gentlemen & Scholars throw their dusty hats into that beer-and-whiskey-soaked roots revival ring with their latest offering, Revival. Nimble slide work accompanies a stuttering riff in album opener "Hold It Down." (In fact, bottlenecking that would make the classic Mississippi Delta blues guitarists proud peppers nearly every song.) Follow-up track “Smooth & Fine” boasts some guitar work worthy of the song’s name, while a growling bass line underscores “Way She Goes.” “Cruisin’” swaggers with a sweat-stroked strut, and “Behind the Wheel” features some of their most fiery fretwork yet. The album has that feel that often only comes through in a band’s live set. Recordings sometimes don’t capture the grittiness bands like this have in a live setting, but the sessions gathered here capture it perfectly. Vocalist/guitarist Jeremiah Galey consistently turns in a powerful and impassioned performance that usually only the stage can coax out, and that sweet hiss of an overdriven amp in the quieter parts helps bring the show to the listener. Pkew Pkew Pkew + One SideOneDummy Records I've been accused of taking myself too seriously on many occasions. During a recent game of Taboo, I was given the clue, "You hate this," to which I responded, "I hate everything." Everyone laughed; none disagreed. Thankfully, Pkew Pkew Pkew make me step back and have a good laugh at myself with + One. The album is a send-up of various punk tropes and archetypes. The vocals on many songs rely almost entirely on gang vocals (Dropkick Murphys, anyone?) or “whoa-oh” and “hey,” and while the lead guitar parts may recall more technical punk fare such as A Wilhelm Scream, the main song structure is still three-chord punk at its finest. Lyrically, the band definitely comes off more “TV Party” than “Rise Above” these songs are all about mocking the more “Bro” side of punk than about sociopolitical issues. The line “We are getting drunk/Before we go out drinking” from, well, “Before We Go Out Drinking” skewers just the same as the aforementioned sarcastic hardcore classic. As someone who has witnessed (or lived) many of the stereotypes satirized here, this album is a great mix of catchy punk and nostalgia. We all need to remember not to take ourselves too seriously sometimes, and these guys are a perfect example of that. - Jonathan Gluff
Grant Maloy Smith Dust Bowl: American Stories Roven Records Given that I first started playing bass with a bluegrass band almost 25 years ago, it and American roots music in general have played a large part in my musical upbringing. Grant Maloy Smith’s Dust Bowl: American Stories reminds me a great deal of many bands I watched or had the privilege of sharing a stage with in my preteen years. The music complements the backdrop of lyrics recalling The Great Depression. Smith’s plaintive voice perfectly conveys the sense of pain and desperation in songs such as “Pushing Back the Wind,” yet adopts an air of optimism to join the booming kick drum-driven “So Far Away.” The banjo on “Lily of the Valley” skitters up and down like a tumbleweed rolling across the same Dust Bowl the album invokes. And while the Dobro and fiddle of “I Come From America” recall a past period of our country’s music, it doesn’t get more original than Native American music. He follows in the footsteps of John Anderson and Johnny Cash in singing about their struggles on “Isht a Lhampko.” Grant’s music can be called many things. Call it “Americana,” call it “roots,” call it “bluegrass with a side of Southern gospel” - whatever it is, it’s something different than the nü-country of Jason Bentley and others. Jimmy DeTalente & The Electric Revival Where We Begin Self-Released Evansville's own Jimmy DeTalente & The Electric Revival debut with Where We Begin, a well-crafted EP that fuses elements of rock, country and American music. With the help of Grammy-nominated producer Travis Wyrick, this six-song collection really shines. Highlights include “Sometimes We Bleed” which begins with a bluegrass banjo intro but quickly turns into a rock song with poignant lyrics about persevering through difficult moments in life. DeTalente’s brief guitar solo in the middle of the song adds a nice touch. “Fall and Fail” features great acoustic guitar playing from DeTalente, especially in the middle of the song. The lyrics speak deeply about the desire to improve his situation while simultaneously offering thanks for the blessings he receives, especially the woman in his life who deals with his faults. “For a Few” is a power ballad about enjoying quality time with the person you love the most. Backing vocals from Laura Melendez complement DeTalente’s lead vocal nicely and the solid rhythm section of David McCord and Larry Deffendoll gives the song a good edge. - Paul Bragin
The Cash Box Kings Royal Mint Alligator Records Since releasing their debut in 2003, The Cash Box Kings have gained a reputation as a stellar band specializing in Chicago Blues from the 1940s and 1950s, as well as Delta Blues from the 1920s and 1930s. They return with Royal Mint, the follow-up to 2015's Holding Court, and the first release on legendary Alligator Records. A cover of Muddy Waters’ “Flood” starts with Billy Flynn’s masterful acoustic guitar work, complemented by some soulful piano work by Lee Kanehira in the middle of the song as well as harmonica brilliance from Joe Nosek. “Blues for Chi-raq," the first song on the album co-written by vocalist Oscar Wilson and Nosek, offers a hard look at life in 21st century Chicago. The heavy subject matter of the song seems tempered by tight playing from Flynn on guitar and the return of the C-Note Horns, with Darren Sterud on trombone and Jim Doherty on trumpet, plus Al Falaschi on saxophone. “Daddy Bear Blues," a song written and sung by Nosek, begins with a Lee Kanehira piano solo and features Billy Flynn trading in his guitar for a mandolin. The song seems to straddle the lines between jazz, blues and classic country very nicely. - Paul Bragin

This pilsner pours up a cloudy light yellow with an airy pale-white head and minimal retention. Its aroma is bready, from pale malts as to be expected from its style. There’s also a small influence of hops in the nose as well. The taste follows form with the nose, mostly, with malt and grassy floral hops combined with a medium mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. This isn’t a style that I normally choose and I feel that this isn’t the best representation of how good a pilsner can be. You decide. Even if it’s not your favorite, you’ll likely enjoy it.

A thick white head crowns this pilsner upon pouring it into a pilsner glass and never completely disappears. The slightly cloudy golden beer begins the scent profile with a generous amount of malt. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue with the first sip of the beer, followed by sweet malt notes and a hint of hops in the finish. This beer could become popular in the summer and with foods like hamburgers and hot dogs.
Pilsner is one of the most popular styles of lager beers in Germany. This one pours up a very light straw color with a dense and rich two finger head that fades to a thin frothy cap for the duration of one's enjoyment. There’s a spicy citrus-floral scent mixed with an undeniably doughy aroma. Taste is where Summer Pils dropped the ball for me. It’s very light and watery and about all I pick up on in the flavor is a little hop bite on the finish. A thick white head rests on top of this clear golden beer when poured into a pilsner glass. A good balance of malt and hop scents control the nose. The first sip of the beer begins with malt notes, followed by some bitter hop presence in the finish. This beer could convert someone who normally drinks mass-produced lager. Pair this seasonal beer with lighter dishes or cheeses like Muenster or Havarti. This is a hazy, straw-colored beer. It has a spicy hop aroma with notes of floral hops and malt. The beer finishes dry and a little bitter with spicy hop flavors. It's better than your average Pils but I usually expect more of a flashy beer from Breckenridge. Still, I'm glad to see them make something like this.

Upland Brewing Petal to the Kettle Ale
Here's another hazy, straw-colored beer. I have enjoyed the other Urban Chestnut offerings I have had in the past and this one is pretty good. I like the 16 ounce can with its unique opening. It's a little on the hoppy side, but I like it and it gives it some real character. It has a slight bready flavor but it's a pretty good beer.

The bottle calls this one an ale, and it is. But not in the traditional sense. It’s an American wild ale - also known as a sour. It pours up a cloudy, medium pinkish color with a light, quick-todissipate white head. There’s no lacing and little visible carbonation. The aroma is light but fresh and discernible with hints of strawberries, citrus and floral notes of rose and hibiscus. The flavor is unique and has a tart grapefruit character with strawberry and subtle hints of floral perfume. The mouthfeel is light and refreshing and this one strikes a home run for summer cooling. A decent white head forms on this beer, but it evaporates rather quickly. The beer boasts a noticeable pink hue from the strawberries used in the brewing process. The nose also contains a pleasant amount of strawberry upon smelling the beer. The first sip of the beer hits the tongue with a crisp and refreshing flavor, with strawberry notes building to the finish. This might pair well with strawberry desserts like pie or shortcake. This is an amber-colored beer. I have to admit that when I read the label, I was dreading sampling it. I've had other beers with flowers that I didn't care for, but I actually like this one. It has a nice floral aroma and I can taste the strawberry and other fruit flavors. I can't really taste the rose and hibiscus but that's ok. It has a nice mouthfeel and I like the complex flavors.

To-Gose is a light, unfiltered wheat beer made with 50-60% malted wheat. It pours up a cloudy light yellow color with a light, airy and tall off-white (leaning toward gray) head. It leaves some pretty serious lacing too. Its aroma is of light malts and lime, mostly, with a taste that certainly

A substantial white head tops this gose beer after pouring it into a wheat beer glass and never completely disappears. The clear golden beer contains a decent amount of lime in the scent profile. The lime continues with the first sip of the beer, as well as some salt that seems out
of place. This beer could rise in popularity during summer months or on tropical beaches due to the lime flavor and low alcohol content.

It states on the label that this is a sour but I really wouldn’t classify it as such - but possibly on the light side of that spectrum. I can taste the sea salt but it has some sort of funky flavor. I assume this is related to the key lime. I would have stayed away from this beer if I had to purchase it due to the flavors listed, but it's not bad at all.

WA L T E R T H E WINE GUY Liquor Locker's resident wine guru Organic wines: Argentina's award-winning Domaine Bousquet Reserve line is a tasty place to start In our ever-expanding need to put “good stuff” into our bodies, people are turning to “organic” products to make sure they are staying healthy. So, let's address a few terms that you may see or hear when you go through the process of making a wine purchase. “Organic” is a term used to signify that the wine is made without the use of synthetic fertilizers, and in a manner that protects the environment and preserves the soil. It's regulated by the USDA and has strict guidelines to attain organic status. “Biodynamic” is a term similar to organic, in that both take place without synthetic chemicals, but biodynamic farming incorporates ideas about a vineyard as an entire ecosystem. It also considers things like astrological influences and lunar cycles. A “biodynamic wine” means that the grapes are framed biodynamically, and that the winemaker did not make the wine with any common manipulations, like yeast additions or acidity adjustments. A wine “made from biodynamic grapes” means that a vintner used biodynamically grown grapes, but followed a less strict list of rules in winemaking. “Sustainability” refers to a range of practices that are not only ecologically sound, but also economically viable and socially responsible. Sustainable

farmers may farm largely organically or biodynamically, but have the flexibility to choose what works best for their property; they may also focus on energy and water conservation, use of renewable resources and other issues. The main difference between all these terms is that "organic" is certified by the USDA while the others are terms used in the industry to show their farming practices, though "sustainability" can be certified by some third-party agencies. With that being said, I can tell you that many of the wines from California, Washington, and Oregon are made using sustainable farming practices; however, to be certified as “organic," there are quite a few hoops to go through and that may be an expense too high to attain. If you want to drink organic wines, there are quite a few available, but in my opinion, some are not as enjoyable as others. Many seem watery, or just lack the flavor complexity that I personally like in wine that I drink on a regular basis. However, I do have a line of wines that I enjoy, that happen to be ORGANIC! The wines of Domaine Bousquet from Argentina are awardwinning, highly-rated wines that are very well made and are certified organic by the USDA and the EU. Of all the wines they produce, the Reserve line is truly my favorite. They are inexpensive, very well made and should be in your wine

rack! My favorite organic Cabernet Sauvignon is the Domaine Bousquet Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an intense, deep purple wine with aromas of black currant and tobacco. On the palate, it presents berries and spices, nice toasty oak and mineral notes. The finish is long, with fine tannins and slight hints of mocha. This is a great wine to serve with braised meats, grilled steak and meaty pasta dishes. Rated 90 points from Wine Spectator and James Suckling. Another organic star from them is the Domaine Bousquet Reserve Pinot Noir. It's a wine with intense violet tones. In the nose it shows complex aromas, such as hints of cherry, plums, coffee, tobacco and toast. It's an elegant wine with medium body and a well-balanced acidity, which is typical of well-made Pinot Noir. The wine unfolds with sweet cherry on the palate with a nice round finish. This wine is ideal with lamb, sausages, duck and spicy foods. For the white wine drinker, there is Domaine Bousquet Reserve Chardonnay. It's 100% Chardonnay, 30% aged in French Oak barrels. The wine has a wonderful golden hue with a slight greenish tone. Fresh aromas of tropical fruits with citrus and floral notes on the nose. The wine imparts concentrated notes of apple and peach with a hint of lime. It has a good balance of fruit and acid, with a long, clean and fresh finish - the perfect wine for fish and seafood. Rated 89 points from Wine Spectator. For those who are looking for that wine with a little more, there is Domaine Bousquet Ameri, a 65% Malbec, 20%Cabernet, 10% Syrah and 5% Merlot blend made from hand-picked and hand-sorted grapes from select portions of the estate. The look of the wine is a dark reddish-purple that is dense and inviting. The nose explodes with red berries and a hint of spice. On the first sip, this elegant wine bursts with mineral, cherries and currants. Its bright acidity keeps this wine refreshing all the way to the finish. The palate is packed with ripe concentrated fruit flavors with notes of tobacco and black pepper spiciness. It has a long finish with fine tannins. A “go-to” steak wine! Rated 92 points from James Suckling, 90 points from Wine & Spirits, and 88 points from Wine Spectator. I hope you give these wines a shot. You don’t have to drink watery wine to enjoy organic wine.
