Hot damn, it's officially spring. Let's all pop open a cold Ski - or brewski if that's more your speed - and celebrate. Now that I'm not spending half my day complaining about the cold (truth to be told, it was the mildest of winters but just work with me here), I hardly know what to do with myself. Thankfully, there's plenty of action out there in the tri-state. For starters, after a seemingly interminable wait, Guns & Hoses returns to the Ford Center April 9. This year's epic battle between the men in blue and red will not only raise thousands for children with disabilities but also spotlight the struggles of firefighter Beth Csukas. By now, many of you are familiar with her story. A wellrespected member of our local department since 2007, she suffered a head injury earlier

this year after crashing on I-69 and has been fighting to recover ever since. So please keep her in your thoughts and come out to the Ford Center and show your support! In other news, a cappella sensation Home Free comes to the Victory on April 27 - check out our exclusive interview on page six. Also at the Victory, Black Jacket Symphony is set to perform the (arguably) greatest concept album of all time, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, on April 15. We spoke with BJS creator J. Willoughby about the process of bringing classic albums to life. And be sure to read up on the buzz surrounding Escape Evansville as breakout rooms hit the tri-state. Last but not least, we've got the latest from western Kentucky - food, music and more! - TE

Home Free

Victory Theatre • April 27 Season four champs of The Sing-Off finding a home in country music, gaining new fans by the day

A

fter three previous attempts to make it on NBC’s popular vocal competition that ran for six years, Minnesota a cappella sensation Home Free finally got the green light in 2013 after impressing producers with their shift in style. The group’s move towards a more country feel not only gave them a leg up, it took them all the way to the finals where their version of Hunter Hayes’ “I Want Crazy” dazzled celebrity judges Jewel, Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman. When the dust settled, Home Free walked away with the grand prize of $100,000 and a major label recording contract. 2014 saw the release of Crazy Life and a wellreceived tour that showcased the group’s inventive arrangements of country classics as well as more contemporary offerings. That was followed by last year’s Country Evolution which debuted at number four, given a boost by a fantastic collaboration with the Oak Ridge Boys and a joyous cover of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” featuring tenor Rob Lundquist. Founding members Chris and Adam Rupp, Austin Brown and Tim Foust round out Home Free’s current lineup. The group is set to hit the road this month in continued support of their latest release. Lundquist kindly spoke with News4U

about going country, collaborating on “Elvira” and more. After years of singing with the group, covering all sorts of genres, how did you feel about the concentration on country? We had always done some country. But right before The Sing-Off was where we really focused our sound with country and that’s been by far the best decision we’ve made. I’m totally for it, but unlike the other guys, I didn’t really grow up listening to country. So I was a little hesitant just because I wasn’t very familiar with it. But as time has gone by, I’m super into it. I mean, there’s good country and there’s bad country just like there’s good pop and bad pop. Speaking of good country, how did the collaboration with the Oak Ridge Boys come about? That was actually the easiest thing ever. We had been on Fox news way back when and Duane Allen from the Oak Ridge Boys saw us and actually contacted us - told us we were doing great. Tim met with him in Nashville and just asked him straight up if they would sing on our arrangement of “Elvira.” He didn’t hesitate - they just took our version of the song, and we recorded it together. It was such a cool experience those guys are professionals but also just goofy and humble with lots of stories to tell.

April 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

“California Country” off the latest album is a great original song. How difficult is it to draw attention to the group’s compositions when you’ve built your career on covers? It definitely is tougher. I mean, if you look at our YouTube views, I think we only have one original song that has reached a million - but we’re super-excited that we have any (laughs). Still, we have brilliant songwriters in the group - Austin wrote “California Country” and that was a favorite of all of ours from the songs that were pitched. We always do some originals and hopefully something will get big - fingerscrossed. But we’ll never quit doing covers because that’s what people want to hear. A cappella groups don’t have the bells and whistles of a full band on stage - just vocals. How do you guys approach the live show? Now that we’ve gotten a little more successful, we are trying to get more lights involved whereas before we didn’t have much of anything. But I think one of the best things that we do right away is break that fourth wall where we talk with the audience and make them a part of the show. That’s been pretty beneficial - people usually leave having had a good time. We don’t take ourselves too seriously on stage. We just have a lot of fun and as a result, we get fans from the super young to the super old. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville / 812422-1515.

Guns & Hoses IX Ford Center • April 9

Annual showdown between the blue and red raises money for local children with disabilities

T

he region’s most exciting sporting event is back. For the ninth year running, police offers and firefighters from all over the tristate will battle in the ring - 15 heart-stopping boxing matches in the name of charity. Funds from the annual showdown between the two departments benefit children with disabilities in our community. To date, Guns & Hoses has raised over $750,000 for a very long list of local organizations that do amazing work, including Evansville ARC, Boonville Studio Bee, SMILE on Down Syndrome and so many more. When the final bell rang last April, the men in red walked away with a narrow 8-7 victory. So, it’s all about pride this year for the EPD. Officers such as Sgt. Samuel Smith have been training hard in an effort to turn the tide and reclaim bragging rights. But no matter who wins, it’s all for a good cause. Everyone just wants to put on a great show for the fans and raise a lot of money for local children. This year’s event has taken on even greater significance considering that local firefighter Beth Csukas is facing her own difficult battle. A member of the Evansville Fire Department since 2007, she suffered a serious head injury earlier this year as a result of a terrible car accident on I-69. Csukas has always been the sort of person to reach out and help others in need, but now she needs our support. Along with all of the news stories and social media reporting on her condition, Guns & Hoses is another opportunity to bring attention to Csukas’ struggle. Come out to the Ford Center and show your support for Beth and all the charities that Guns & Hoses Benefits! The event starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit 911giveshope.com.

Black Jacket Symphony presents:

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon • Victory Theatre • April 15 BJS creator J. Willoughby discusses the challenge of bringing classic albums to life, the digital age and more

Photo Courtesy of: R. Craig Fangman

W

ith the resurgence of vinyl over the last several years, music fans both young and old are (re)discovering the joy of listening to albums from beginning to end. This welcome cultural change has inspired many bands to tour their most popular releases, faithfully playing the songs in sequence. Some, like the jam band Phish, have even chosen to recreate a classic album in full on special occasions. In fact, their live presentation of The Beatles’ White Album was the impetus for the Black Jacket Symphony. Creator J. Willoughby took the idea of bringing rock’s most beloved recordings to life and ran with it, assembling a cast of music professors, teachers and songwriters from the Atlanta, Birmingham and Nashville areas to recreate and tour the likes of Led Zeppelin IV and the Eagles’ Hotel California. Incredibly, since 2009, the BJS has performed over 30 of the greatest albums in music history. But there’s no better place to start than Pink Floyd’s conceptual masterpiece, Dark Side of the Moon. Willoughby’s bringing the 50 million-selling phenomenon to the Victory Theatre on April 15 with more classic album performances to come. What sort of preparation is involved in recreating a classic album? It takes a lot. I come up with what we need and

10 |

then go find the right person for that position. A guy that plays George Harrison guitars is not necessarily the right guy to play David Gilmour parts or Jimmy Page parts. Sometimes I feel like a coach, a recruiter. But once you get the right group of people together for an album, then there’s a lot of homework to be done. And then we run the album through over and over and over, making sure that we’re getting it down note for note, every detail. What makes Dark Side of the Moon such an ideal starting point? It’s the perfect first album to introduce to a new market - any city where we’re going - because it’s a great template, it doesn’t stop. The only time it stops is when you have to get up to turn the LP over (laughs). It’s perfect to let audiences understand what it is we’re doing - to let them know that we’re not a tribute band; we’re paying respect to an album. Considering we’re in the digital age, have you been surprised by the number of young people at the BJS shows? It’s been pretty amazing. When I started this in 2009, I kind of thought it was a baby boomer thing, but it hasn’t really been. I say this a lot, but every generation always says that their music was better than the last - we just happen

April 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

to be right (laughs). And I think kids know it. College aged kids come to the Zeppelin and Beatles and Floyd shows. I think kids are discovering this music on their own - going back and downloading it. Pop music today is fine - my daughter is just now getting into it - but it’s disposable. The albums that we’re recreating are works of art. Will the band just play Dark Side of the Moon or do other songs, too? We’ll do the album and then take a short break. During that break, we’ll announce when we’re coming back to Evansville and what album we’ll be doing - and give people the opportunity to buy tickets to the next show before they even go on sale. Then after the intermission, we’ll come back and do a second set of Pink Floyd greatest hits. Sometimes the second set is even better, because it’s a little looser - everyone relaxes. I get the guys all worked up to try and perfectly recreate the album featured that night during the first set. So the second set is often even more fun than the first. The show starts at 8 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit blackjacketsymphony.com or victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville / 812-422-1515.

Five Finger Death Punch & Shinedown with special guest P.O.D. Ford Center • May 3

Three of the biggest names in rock banding together for one incredible night of metal mayhem

T

here are package tours and then there are kick-ass package tours. This is most definitely the latter. Featuring drummer Jeremy Spencer who grew up in Boonville, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown are bringing along special guest P.O.D. to the Ford Center for the mother of all metal shows. All three bands are veterans of the music business with millions of albums sold and solid reputations as unstoppable live acts. Over the years, each has built up an incredibly loyal following - fans who have grown up with the music and made it a part of their lives. That’s what makes this tour so special. Of course, the big thrill for everyone here in the tri-state will be seeing Spencer behind the drum kit on the big stage. Though the former Indiana boy has lived on the west coast for years, he’s still a Hoosier at heart. Since forming FFDP in 2005, he’s toured the world and been recognized as one of the greatest drummers in rock. In 2014, Spencer penned his autobiography - amusingly titled Death Punch’d - which detailed his life with the band. FFDP released Got Your Six in late 2015. Along with tracks from that album, they’ll unleash a torrent of heavy hits from previous releases including Way of the Fist, War is the Answer, American Capitalist and Wrong Side of Heaven & the Righteous Side of Hell. Formed in Florida, Shinedown released

their debut album in 2003 and really hit it big five years later with 2008’s The Sound of Madness featuring the huge single, “Second Chance.” Threat to Survival was released last September, continuing the evolution of the band’s sound as heard on the propulsive single, “Cut the Cord.” Together for an amazing 24 years, P.O.D. is still tearing it up. The Christian metal band from San Diego keeps flipping the script, always one step ahead of both fans and critics as evidenced on 2015’s concept album, The Awakening. But rest assured you’ll hear all of P.O.D.’s most popular songs during the opening set. Don’t miss the biggest metal blowout of the year! The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit thefordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

Alhambra Film Festival

Showplace Cinemas East/Tropicana Evansville • April 7-10 The region’s premier film festival returns bigger and even better after a phenomenal inaugural run Are you attracting a lot of local talent with this festival? There are lots of talented local people involved with the festival. For instance, Shane Hazen from Evansville edited a film called First Girl I Loved starring Dylan Gelula which won the audience award at Sundance. And it just so happens that the other young actress that stars in it is Brianna Hildebrand who can currently be seen as the sidekick in the Deadpool movie. So we’re thrilled to have her as a participant in the festival. She is that “It Girl” in Hollywood - she has a lot of projects going on.

Dylan Gelula in First Girl I Loved

E

xecutive Director Malcolm Cook could not have dreamt of a more perfect beginning. The 2015 Alhambra Film Festival - the first of many to come to benefit the theatre’s restoration effort - not only exceeded expectations in terms of interest and attendance, it also featured an Oscarnominated movie right out of the gate. World of Tomorrow, an animated short, was just one of over 200 submissions received from all over the U.S. and beyond. And this year’s festival looks to up that impressive number to north of 300, including two Oscar nominees and six international winners of larger festivals. According to Cook, 65 different countries will be represented, a staggering achievement considering the event is so new and obviously lacks the name recognition of Sundance or Cannes. Cook kindly spoke with News4U about last year’s success and much more. What impact did the inclusion of the Oscarnominated World of Tomorrow have on the festival?

16 |

We had such high quality caliber of films last year that if we continue on our path, we’ll become an Oscar qualifying film festival. Different film festivals have different categories in which their award winner is an automatic qualifying nominee for an Oscar. If we could do that, it would be just awesome for us. It’s awesome to be recognized and we want to continue down that path. What sort of response did you get from the film directors and special guests that attended last year? The guests that we had last year were just thrilled with the audiences, the interaction, the warmth - people here were just so receptive and so polite and so nice. That’s not something they’re used to when they travel around the country. We were very southern, if you will, congenial. This year, for the people that make our official selection list, we’re providing them with a swag bag that’s Evansville-centric - stuff from Tin Man, Uncharted International, etc. - just a lot of local vendors and merchants - to make their stay a little more welcoming.

April 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Do you intend to show films at the Alhambra Theatre itself after the restoration is complete? Oh, definitely. If we could use the Alhambra, we’d have as many films there as we could. Showplace obviously has the biggest set-up and that works very well for us, especially for a big premier night. And we love working with local vendors in any way, shape or form. The more interaction with the community, the happier we are - we like those partnerships, and it’s better for everybody involved. What’s your vision for the Alhambra Film Festival over the next few years? We don’t want to be just a way-stop for people who are the big name prize collectors - we want to be a regional powerhouse. We want folks who are in our area to come show their films at the Alhambra Festival and meet the people who influence their job. At the end of the day, making an independent film is all about a small business - it may be a very short life cycle, but they’re producing that film as a business and they need to meet distributors, people who can help them get that film out to the public. We want to be that bridge - that link - that connects their dots. For more info, visit their website at thealhambratheatrefilmfestival.com or follow them on Facebook. Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra April Performances at the Victory Theatre

From pop stars to old masters, the EPO will mix it up again this month as the 2015-16 season heads towards its spectacular conclusion nor their cultural impact. In recognition of these titans of the industry, guest pianist Joe Boucher and his four-piece pop group will join the EPO for two magical performances. Along with the aforementioned songs, expect to hear beautiful orchestrations of “Tiny Dancer,” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” “New York State of Mind” and so much more. It’s always a thrill when Maestro Savia and his players put their classical spin on pop standards - the result is always spectacular, elevating the songs to another plane.

H

ard to believe, but there are only a few opportunities left to “Experience the Phil” before the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra takes its final bow - and a well-deserved break - and then prepares to do it all again next September. But first, two entirely different but equally fantastic performances are lined up for April ahead of the highly-anticipated grand finale of The Godfather next month. Yes, it’s safe to say that Maestro Savia and his players have saved the best for last as there’s no better example of the EPO’s incredible range. From unforgettable pop melodies to epic operas,

these two performances will illustrate just how effortlessly the orchestra moves from one musical world to another. Piano Men: The Music of Elton & Billy - 4/2 & 4/3 In the pantheon of pop music, two names are always near the very top. Elton John and Billy Joel have written some of the biggest hits of all time, songs that have been passed down from generation to generation. From “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” to “Just the Way You Are,” there’s no mistaking the collective melodic genius of John and Joel

Strauss & Wagner Orchestral Finale - 4/30 For orchestra enthusiasts, it doesn’t get any better than the final Classics performance of the season. Works from two celebrated German composers will take center stage, including Richard Strauss’ thrilling and passionate tone poem, Don Juan and Four Last Songs - the latter featuring vocalist/ Evansville native Kendra Colton. In addition, the EPO will perform the greatest moments from Wagner’s Ring, a cycle of four epic operas written over a period of 26 years. This is classical music at its best, full of drama and breathtaking in scope. What better way to lead up to the climactic performance of The Godfather than with one of the most pulsepounding evenings of the season? Come out and “Experience the Phil” before the 2015-16 season comes to a close! For tickets and more information, visit us at evansvillephilharmonic.org or call 812-425-5050. beauty advice

Beauty Date Expert advice from beauty coach DaKyissa Cleon, Founder of Beauty Date / Evansville, Indiana

Spring Cleaning Your Beauty While it’s great to spring clean your home, it's even more beneficial to work on your beauty. So, here is a guide you can use to spring clean your beauty!

Clean up your thoughts. Begin thinking more positive. Negative thoughts destroy your inner beauty and should be blocked instantly. The worst part is, if this has become your habit it will be hard to change. So, what can help you? I recommend trying what Joyce Meyer encourages. She says, “We are to think like God thinks." So, the next time you find yourself with continuous unhealthy thoughts, ask yourself if God would think the same way.

Eliminate toxic people and habits. It’s common that we tend to allow the wrong people to stay in our lives past their expiration date. We also tend to develop habits that get embedded in us. So much that it feels like they are just a part of who we are. The problem with toxic people and habits is that they cause us to lose sight of what is right. So, what can we do to be better? Well, first you have to reveal what is toxic in your life. I recommend creating a list of what is toxic in your life. Then, simply start working to remove those things. This process may be difficult, but keep in mind what you are working on...living a more beautiful life!

Change up your eating habits. I don’t just mean food, but also your TV and music content. The saying, you are what

20 |

you eat also applies to the things we feed the mind. If we consume the wrong things long enough, eventually we will become desensitized to them. How can you be successful during this process? To begin this process, try creating monthly goals. Each month, decide what you will work on. For instance, in April I want to focus on eating more green and listening to more gospel music. Before I go, I want to leave you with a method of how to clean up your beauty kit. This reference will guide you in knowing when you need to remove products. • Foundation – 2 years • Powder – 2 years • Blush – 2 years • Concealer – 1 year • Lipstick/Lipgloss – 1 year • Mascara – 3 months • Eye liner – 1 year • Eye shadow – 2 years • Cleanser – 1 year • Moisturizer – 2 years Spring cleaning your beauty takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It will be wise to get an accountability partner. If you need any help, let me know. Until next time, Stay Beautiful, Stay Strong, and Stay Positive! Your Beauty Coach and Friend, DaKyissa

Picking Out the Perfect Prom Dress by Sarah Muntzer • GM of Paparazzi Glamour & Gowns

From the color to the design, it's still all about finding the right fit at the right price Prom is the most exciting and glamorous night of every girl's high school career. It's important that she finds something that complements her personality and body type, while setting her apart from the crowd. Hopefully, these insights can help you in your search for the perfect dress! Every year there are two colors that are the most asked about/best selling. In 2016, Royal Blue and Red have taken home the gold. I'll be the first to say I've got no complaints! Jewel tones complement a wide variety of skin tones and look classy and timeless. As for dress types, the most popular style this year is definitely the two-piece crop top. Although they’ve been on the scene for a while, crop tops have really taken off of late and once you see how adorable they are, you'll completely understand! Printed taffeta fabrics have also been a hot commodity, ranging from vintage to realistic modern floral prints, stripes and polka dots. They are fun, flirty and chic, and we can't get enough of 'em! Lace embellishment and colored stones are here to stay, and I think it’s a great balance to the traditional crystal and diamond-embellished gowns. Also, the illusion neckline has almost put strapless gowns out of commission. I can't say I've seen one that I didn’t like. The coverage factor is much more age appropriate for a young lady, and it provides such a delicate element of class! After my 3.5 years in the prom industry, I always find myself learning new things, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. At our store we stock unique and affordable styles for any body type and budget. If you're having trouble finding the perfect dress, then you just haven't been to Paparazzi yet! getting to know

Wesley Wright

Bar Louie General Manager Being the general manager of a restaurant is stressful and time consuming, but we managed to catch up with Bar Louie's GM, Wesley Wright, in between the lunch and dinner rush. He kindly participated in a rapid-fire question session, ranging in topics from politics to push-ups. • Impressions of the election cycle so far... It seems more like a character assassination this year than an election process. I hear more about the candidates insulting each other than talking about the issues that people want them to address. Not impressed at all. • Favorite band of all time... That's easy - 38 Special. Favorite song is "Hold On Loosely." • My college days were... I don't remember (laughs). No, they were fun. Let's say "eventful" and leave it at that. • Best part about being a GM... The guests, hands down. I love interacting with the people and being able to get out in the public and help whenever I can. We do a lot of charity at Bar Louie - we work with the United Way. I guess the best answer is being in the position to help the community out and have the say-so to help out how I see fit. • When I need to cut loose, I... Go camping. My wife and I own a camper, and if I get four days off, we just pick a spot on the map and take off with the kids four girls and one boy. • A job that I would never want... According to statistics, the most stressful job in the world is Air Traffic Controller. Number two is Restaurant Manager. Statistically speaking, I would avoid number one - I've already got my hands full. • My thoughts on self-driving cars... I'm a control freak, so I don't like them. I need to be driving. • Favorite Bar Louie menu item... Blackened fish tacos. • Number of push-ups I could do right now... 75 - I do 50 every night before bed, so I could probably bump that up another 25 for sure.

• An April Fool's joke I've played... I once told my wife that someone in our family had passed away. She never found any humor in it - the kids and I did, but she didn't (laughs).

Concordia Lutheran Church • May 7

t's that time of year again when you can head out early on a weekend morning and cruise your area streets, looking for deals at yard sales. Sure, it's a rush to find unexpected bargains, but really it's more about the sense of community you feel while shopping alongside friends and neighbors. And that's exactly what Concordia Lutheran is all about - bringing people together. On May 7, the church will host its Spring Fling Grill-Out, Rummage & Bake Sale to raise funds for the congregation. Breakfast from the grill by the Men of Concordia begins at 6:30 a.m., and the rummage sale gets going at 7 a.m. No doubt you'll want to get there early and get a belly full of good eats before stocking up on nice fashions, knick-knacks, small furniture, purses, books and treasures you can't live without! Now, with all that shopping, you're bound to get hungry again, but don't worry - the Men of Concordia will also fire up the grill for lunch and in addition, baked goods from A Bit of Sugar by Amy Wiist will be available. All the way up until 2 p.m., you can hunt for great deals and purchase delicious meals made to order, so be sure to bring your eye for a bargain as well as your appetite! Portions of the proceeds will go to WITH Ministries (Jacob's Village, The Rehab Center, and ARC), LCMS International Mission Dom Republic, Lakeview Camp, and LWML Scholarships. For more info, visit concordiaevansville.org. Concordia Lutheran is located at 2451 Stringtown Rd. / 812-422-0384.

Holiday Inn Evansville Airport • April 30

very year, the VHS holds a handful of events to raise money on behalf of the community’s huge population of homeless cats, dogs, rabbits and many other furry friends. The “Game of Bones” Going, Going Gone to the Dogs Benefit Dinner & Auction on April 30 at the Holiday Inn Evansville Airport will be the biggest in 2016; in fact, the annual evening of fun and high-stakes bidding typically brings in thousands of dollars for the organization - crucial to offset the operational costs of the shelter. It’s the perfect opportunity to show your support for the VHS and maybe even walk away with a valuable prize that you will happily pay for in the name of saving an animal. More than ever, the VHS is making a huge impact on the community’s homeless animal population. Recent statistics show that the organization’s low-cost spay/neuter program has greatly reduced the number of intakes since its introduction in 2008. Best of all, the euthanasia rate has decreased by 66%! That’s an amazing success story, and we should all thank the good people at the VHS for their dogged determination to improve a dire situation. The “Game of Bones” event will feature both a silent and live auction plus a fantastic meal. Tickets begin at $75/plate and max out at $1250 for a corporate table of 10. To become a sponsor or to donate auction items, contact Amanda Coburn at 812-4262563 ext. 218 or email a.coburn@vhslifesaver.org. For more info, visit vhslifesaver.org. The Holiday Inn Evansville Airport is located at 7101 U.S. 41.

Rockin River City Ride

Downtown Evansville Riverfront • May 13-14 Bike, run or walk to benefit the Junior League of Evansville and their missions and charities

O

ne of the community’s favorite events will return this May for another exciting weekend of fun and physical activity for a good cause. The Junior League of Evansville’s Rockin River City Ride offers a challenge for both novice and experienced cyclists and runners alike along the beautiful Evansville riverfront. As in years past, Friday will feature a 3 or 5 mile run/walk for Rockin Run participants followed by a musical after-party. On Saturday, participants will be able to choose from a 5K Family Bike Ride and 25K, 60K or 100K Bike Ride. Both walkers and riders will enjoy numerous fully-stocked rest stops, excellent free route support, a bike park that will include food and merchant vendors, a kids’ park with bounce houses, games, prizes, bike helmet giveaway and a bike safety presentation. Not only is the Rockin River City Ride an absolute blast for both cyclists and runners of all ages, it also raises much needed funds for the Junior League of Evansville, an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Since its inception back in 1926, the JLE has given over one million dollars to the Evansville community. Another major benefit of the Rockin River City Ride is its impact on downtown Evansville. The event draws hundreds of people - and lots of attention - to the area, supporting the city’s efforts to re-energize interest in local businesses and housing. Register for the Rockin River City Ride today and be a part of a fantastic community event! For more info, visit rockinrivercityride.org.

Escape Evansville

600 N. Weinbach Ave. #940 • 812-573-0026 Nationwide craze hits the tri-state, picks local brains with real life puzzles

I

nitially popularized in Japan as a video game, “escape rooms” have since been transformed and re-imagined. All over the U.S. and in cities across the world, friends, families and co-workers are experiencing the fun - and challenge - of real life puzzles. At Escape Evansville, the goal is simple: to get out of a locked room before time runs out. But to do that, you must use your surroundings, observations and problem solving skills to discover the clues, codes and keys needed to escape before the hour is up! More than anything, it takes teamwork, patience and persistence to meet the challenge of these brain-teasing scenarios. Currently, there are four unique rooms to choose from: Pirates of the Ohio, Taken, Zombie Escape and the Enchanted Library. There are varying degrees of difficulty so even kids can enjoy the experience. In fact, escape rooms are perfect for all ages. You won’t need anything upon entering an escape room - just your wits. But don’t worry about getting stuck. Game Masters monitor your progress, so if you need a clue, they can help you get to the next step. But if your group is determined to solve the puzzle completely on your own, that’s just fine - good luck! Escape Evansville is now up and running and bookings are going fast. The initial response has been great, and people all over the tristate are finding out just how much fun an escape room can be. Bring your friends and family along or your team of co-workers and get ready to beat the clock! For more info and to book an escape room, visit escapeevansville.com.

Bandana's BBQ

6636 Logan Drive • Evansville, Indiana • 812-401-9922

I

f you're looking for great barbeque and service with a smile, try Bandana's BBQ. Located by Lowe's in the old Firefly building, the interior has a southern feel, and the in-house smoked meats give off a mouthwatering aroma. They're not joking when they say, "Smell That Smoke." The restaurant started in St. Louis, and with 32 locations, they're still a family-owned establishment that prepares everything from scratch, including their six different sauces. But don't be afraid to get messy - there's an entire roll of paper towels on every table! I'd wager that it's nearly impossible to leave this place hungry (or thirsty as Bandana's serves both beer and wine). Even the "Budget Busters" menu is a bang for your buck, and

the Brunswick Stew, listed in the "Starters" section, is a meal in itself. Large chunks of their smoked meats, stewed tomatoes, corn, green beans, and potatoes in a spicy sauce make a hearty feast that's savory and soul-satisfying. For a lighter (but still sizable) option, try the Bar-B-Q Salad. Fresh mixed greens with whole grape tomatoes, shredded cheddar and crunchy croutons serve as a bed for your choice of meat and buttery garlic bread. I recommend the smoked chicken with BBQ Ranch dressing. Now, for the main event: the Dinner Combo Platter. Choose two or three meats (I tried the smoked sausage, pulled pork and ribs), two sides and grab that paper towel roll. They use a dry rub, but the slow-smoking

process caramelizes it, and nothing was lacking in flavor, even without the sauce. Their homemade creamy coleslaw was fresh, with just a hint of vinegar. I'm normally not a fan but I actually enjoyed their recipe - a good flavor to balance out the sweet potato fries, which are difficult to make without being soggy or oily. Theirs are seasoned, hot and crispy - perfect for ranch-dipping. Next trip: a Beef Melt sandwich with potato salad and an IBC Root Beer Float - awardwinning, indeed. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Sun-Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m. / Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Call ahead for catering/ carryout and visit bandanasbbq.com for their full menu.

Owner of Beef 'O' Brady's

Spring is here and along with it comes the much-anticipated seasonal selection of tropical and fruity beers. We at Beef's love this time of year and take pride in having these favored craft brews on tap. Two in particular that make this time of year so special for beer lovers are Ballast Point Sculpin and Sixpoint Hi-Res - IPAs which many of you have never been able to find around this area. Ballast Point is truly making a splash in this market with the introduction of Sculpin, a monster of an award-winning brew. And Sixpoint keeps putting out seriously flavorful concoctions that people are always requesting. Welcome to spring! Ballast Point Sculpin - Sculpin IPA is a great example of expert brewing. After years of experimenting, the folks at Ballast knew that hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. This inspired approach creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish, resulting in an award-winning beer. In fact, Sculpin won a gold medal in 2010 and 2014 at the World Beer Cup as well as a gold medal at the US Beer Open. Sixpoint Hi-Res - If you don’t like bitter, hoppy beers then you should probably avoid Hi-Res. In other words, this is not your run-of-the-mill pale ale. Rather, it's an assault on your taste buds. The aroma is sweet, tropical fruit juice with no alcohol smell detected - it's undeniably absent. But again, as far as IPAs go, this one is extra bitter. If that's your thing, we're sure you'll love it. We hope you all enjoy the arrival of spring. Beef’s has a nice patio where you can sit outside and enjoy the weather along with a great beer. We look forward to seeing you. Check us out on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with all that's happening, including our daily specials.

ocated inside the Owensboro Convention Center, Artisan Café by SFG is a fresh departure from typical stadium food. Chef Stephen Helm and Café manager Katie Perkins have partnered with Specialty Foods Group, Inc. to provide the downtown business crowd and event-goers with more options than just hamburgers and hot dogs, although a mouth-watering, hefty Angus patty and Fields dog still grace their menu. And they don’t cut corners - Java beans used in their coffee drinks are ground in-house, and their iced vanilla latte is a delicious wake-up call with two shots of espresso! Besides providing great food and drinks, the cafe also gives back - on Make It Count Mondays, 10% of sales goes to local nonprofits.

If you’re a fan of club sandwiches, you’ll definitely be pleased with the SFG Sub Club. Served on a chewy ciabatta roll, it’s hearty with a good meat/bread ratio, layered with roasted turkey, ham, bacon, choice of cheese, crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, and a side of mustard and mayo. What I enjoyed the most about this sandwich was the fresh taste of every ingredient - the meats were sliced and bacon cooked to order. With a side of thick seasoned fries, it was filling and reasonably priced. Next up was one of their most popular items - the Hot Sub Stromboli. Toasty and bursting with flavor, it’s easy to taste why it’s a favorite. Ham, salami, and pepperoni are topped with melted cheese and tangy marinara sauce on a garlic hoagie roll. Finally, I couldn’t wait to try the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The chopped chicken gets marinated and neatly tucked into a fresh wrap with lettuce, tomato, pepper jack and creamy ranch dressing. I’m a buffalo chicken nut, and I

would definitely get this wrap again. For my next visit, however, I’m going to try the salad bar and soup du jour - a healthy choice at $9, and a good excuse to reward myself with a House Baked Cookie on my way to enjoy a stroll down the riverfront. - Whitney Patterson Bistro seating will become available, weatherpermitting. WESTERN KENTUCKY

music spotlight

Roy Kyle & The Hot Rod Cruisers

Band of music veterans keeps rocking the classics and oldies, flying by the seat of their pants Tuesday night at Tropicana Evansville before he sat in with Terry Lee & The Rockaboogie Band at Hoosiers Lounge. When did you start playing drums? I started playing drums in 1989. I’ve never taken lessons, but playing in high school helped a lot. Both of my parents are musicians - they both play keyboard instruments. In fact, my dad can even play the accordion. So music has always been a part of my life. I actually tried guitar first, but I was never any good at it - can only play a few chords.

W

hen the rhythm section made up of brothers John “Cali” and Patrick “Woodie” Calhoun hooked up with western Kentucky guitar ace “Rockin” Roy Kyle a few years ago, the trio hit the ground running with a repertoire of songs from the 50s through the 70s - from Motown to classic country and everything in between. But versatility is not a problem when you’ve got three guys with such impressive musical resumes. Each has played in multiple bands over the course of the last two or three decades, able to adapt to any crowd or switch up the set list on request. With so much experience between them, they can even fake their way through a song, if necessary - which comes in handy on occasion. We caught up with drummer and Owensboro native John “Cali” Calhoun on a recent

How long have you known Roy? I met Roy in 1996 and began playing with him in another band called Nite Life. We were actually the house band at the VFW in Owensboro played lots of country along with some classic rock and oldies. Roy’s an incredible singer and guitar player - he does it all. What other bands did you play in leading up to The Hot Rod Cruisers? I was in a band called Bad Kitty that played all over the tri-state area for a number of years. We even released a CD that got some airplay. The song “We Aren’t Married Yet” - which had an old ska feel like No Doubt - was played locally on the radio as well as on a station in Vincennes. The funny thing is that I met my wife in that band. We knew each other indirectly before but didn’t really meet until Bad Kitty. The band played straight up rock and roll, lots of Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and, of course, No Doubt - it was a lot of fun.

And how does your brother Patrick figure into all of this? He was actually the bass player in Bad Kitty, and we’ve always enjoyed playing music together. After that band and some other subsequent projects came to an end, we started talking about putting together a three piece - a side project for fun. So we asked Roy if he’d be interested, and he said he’d love to do something. The rest is history. What are some of the more memorable gigs the Hot Rod Cruisers have played? Some of our favorites have been at LIVE on the Banks and Taste of Owensboro - and we always love playing the VFWs and American Legions. But one particular gig that really stands out is a class reunion we played at Mount Saint Joseph which used to be the all girls school. We went in and it was just a room full of older women. But, man, they partied (laughs)! It was an absolute blast. And recently, we played a show at Stellian’s in Central City. We went in there with our full set list, but as soon as we started playing, people started yelling out all these different songs - weird stuff that you wouldn’t expect us to do. The whole night was like Russian roulette for us and the people loved it! Roy Kyle & The Hot Rod Cruisers are confirmed to play LIVE on the Banks again this summer. In the interim, you can catch them at the Merle Travis Music Center in Powderly, KY on April 16 and Corydon Live! in Corydon, IN on April 29. International Bluegrass Music Museum Spring 2016 Concert Series

And then there were three; time is running out to catch one of the IBMM’s final shows of the season

I

t’s always a little sad when the IBMM Spring Concert Series comes to a close. The annual run of folk and bluegrass performances by some of the very best regional and national acts gives area music fans something to look forward to each month, especially during the time of year when many bands cut back on touring. Without question, the 2016 schedule has been very well-received. In fact, several shows have sold-out, including Sierra Hull in late March as well as the upcoming final performance of the series by Pokey LaFarge on May 12. But there are still two other great concerts in between that are guaranteed to please. First up on April 22 is the Grammy-nominated duo of Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley - a debut IBMM performance. Talk about two instrumental talents - both of these gifted musicians can hold their own with the very best in bluegrass and together, they are a revelation. If you are new to the Ickes-Hensley partnership, be sure to check out their cover of “Pride & Joy” on YouTube. The combination of complex acoustic guitar picking and slide guitar genius married with Hensley’s strong vocals makes for a powerful presentation.

or three decades, Peter Gros has made it his mission to advocate for animals in the wild, running rehabilitation programs, lecturing on conservation and preservation and above all, inspiring young people to care about wildlife and wild places. As an ambassador for Mutual of Omaha, he has made countless TV appearances, including multiple guest spots on the Tonight Show, and continues to travel all over the country, championing the natural world wherever he goes. On Friday, April 8, Gros will make a stop at the Henderson Fine Arts Center to share his incredible wildlife experiences, highlighting his many adventures with a mix of video clips and bloopers, while introducing friendly exotic animals to audience members. Most importantly, he'll encourage everyone to think about the impact we all have on this planet. “We need to continue to deliver a powerful message about how each of us can make a daily difference in preserving our natural world,” Gros says. “It is possible to use our natural resources in a sustainable manner. We simply need to educate our nation’s youth about the importance of wildlife conservation.” This family-friendly event is perfect for all ages and a great opportunity for kids to learn about the beauty of the natural world and the importance of preserving it. The show starts at 7 p.m. The HFAC is located at 2660 S. Green St. / 270-831-9800. For more info, visit haaa.org.

Rescheduled from earlier this year, Nashville’s Sheriff Scott & The Deputies will take the IBMM stage on May 5. Driven by the sweet, urban songwriting of Sheriff Scott Simontacchi, the group continues to stretch the boundaries of traditional folk and bluegrass music. Live, they produce a rich, full sound comprised of acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle and upright bass while lyrically, there’s both an underlying humor and a hint of darkness on songs like “Marilyn Monroe.” Get your tickets for the final Spring 2016 Concert Series performances before it’s too late! For tickets, visit bluegrassmuseum.org. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro, KY. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • April 2016

Around the Track with Billy Egeler

Aaaaaaaaand we’re back! It's time for the green flag to wave on another season of auto racing!

T

he new season is taking shape, but first let's talk about some very exciting things that took place during the offseason. Owensboro’s Nicky Hayden left MotoGP racing and became a member of the series Hall of Fame. Nicky will be competing in World Super Bike, and his season has already started strong! Another local racer, Hunter Baize of Bremen, KY, signed on with H Scott Motorsports and will be running the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. During February, several of our local dirt drivers again visited Florida for a week filled of racing. Tyler Nicely of Owensboro was

able to pick up a feature win while in Florida along with Hopkinsville’s Trent Young. Utica, KY’s Josh Harris had some strong runs as did Bryce Jewell, Will Krup and several others. The talent the modified drivers in this area have is unreal. This season will be a good one for sure. As we go to press, many of the local tracks have already wrapped up their yearly practice sessions and have concluded their first race of the season. I have come up with a few opening dates for you and encourage you to visit each track's Facebook page to stay up to date with what’s happening weekly!

Chandler Motor Speedway’s gates will once again swing open under new management this season. Their season will kick off on April 15. The historic 3/8 mile dirt track’s opening was in question for a few months, but a local duo stepped up to open it again. Greater Evansville Dragway - formally known

JOSH HARRIS

as Chandler Dragway - continues to get a facelift and will open this season for our local drag racers. The date is TBA but from the looks of it, you will be very pleased with the improvements the new owner is making to this facility. Tri-State Speedway will kick off its season on April 16. Tommy and his crew are well prepared for the season. Many LARGE events are on the schedule, including the World of Outlaws Sprint which is ALWAYS a standing room only show and another visit of the UMP Summer Nationals for the UMP DIRTcar Series Late Models. Rockport Raceway has found new management for the 2016 season. This little speed plant for Go Karters will fire up on April 30. The new management has scheduled their season around other local kart tracks and is working with other tracks to make things work best for them and the racers. Kuddos to them!! This is what ALL tracks need to do to keep the sport working. Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, KY is looking forward to getting things started on April 2. They'll be hosting several larger paying events for their racers and always do fundraiser specials for food banks and other charities during the season. Western Kentucky Speedway in Nebo, KY will also start their season on April 2. This year WKS is offering a mixed bag of classes - nine in all that will be in action throughout the season. Kentucky Motor Speedway in Whitesville, KY, which is the only asphalt track still operating in the state, will light it up starting Sunday, April 17. Brad and his team have decided they'll stay on their Sunday program after experimenting last season with some Saturday night shows. The track has combined a couple of classes and added a new Legends class which is a motorcycle engine powered race machine. This season looks to be a record season at the asphalt jungle. Just like last year, it's very important for race fans to visit their local tracks. Without the fan and racer support, our sport doesn’t last. Get out and support grass roots racing! Regional Motorsports Power Hour will be starting their season the second Tuesday of April LIVE from the Owensboro Convention Center. The show will feature news, results and interviews with drivers from around the region. You will be able to listen in on 102.7 The Game ESPN Owensboro and 94.7 WBIO. Until next month…

Jay Putty

Move from dance-pop to country-pop making all the difference for Nashville-bound singer-songwriter

A

sk Evansville native Jay Putty how he got started playing music and you’ll get a surprising tale about a grade school bully, a broken nose that required surgery and a fateful trip to Wal-Mart for a $20 First Act acoustic guitar - not exactly an auspicious beginning to a recording career. But that unfortunate experience was a turning point, inspiring the shy, young student to connect with the outside world through music. In fact, over the last decade, Putty has formed a constant stream of bands, always restless to branch out into another genre, dabbling in everything from emo to screamo, pop punk to acousticelectro, even soft-rock. But at 22, the multi-instrumentalist seems to have finally found his niche. On the heels of a highly-successful country single, “Worth the Wait,” and the just-

66 |

released follow-up, “Soon Ain’t Soon Enough,” Putty is headed to Nashville this month for a chance-of-a-lifetime songwriting seminar. For three days, he’ll learn from three of the most revered names in the Music City - Ashley

I don’t set a limit - I just try to aim as high as I can. Hopefully, that means arenas and Grammys.

According to Putty, there was nowhere to go but up after self-releasing his first EP at the age of 12; he seems to have blocked out the entire experience, including the band’s name. From there, however, things did indeed improve along with his memory. “After that I was in band called Enigma which changed its name to Midnight Manifest and then to From Fame to Fiction - we were like post-hardcore,” he says. “We released two records and played

Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood. Putty may be nervous, but he’s also confident. “I’m telling myself that they had to have seen something in me to even accept me,” he says. “I’ve learned so much in the last eight months by completely throwing away every ego I have and just saying, ‘Tell me what I’m doing wrong so I can get better.’”

lots of shows at Boney Junes and Wired.” Soon after, Putty did a 180, joining forces with his best buddy Logan in a mellow side project that reflected the duo’s interest in John Mayer and The Scene Aesthetic. And there was also Run, Baby, Run, an acoustic-electro band started around that period. It eventually ran out of steam but Putty and the singer in the band would later reconvene and form The Night Life in 2011. Initially described as “The Fray mixed with The Maine,” the group developed an even more pop-oriented sound that caught on in a big way. “We met a man named Kevin Gates who’s worked with The Ready Set and Never Shout Never and recorded an EP with him,” Putty says. “We got super popular, played the Warped Tour, did lots of traveling.” But after putting out two full-length albums and gaining plenty of traction, disagreements over the direction of the band squashed the momentum. For the first time in his brief but varied music career, Putty was about to go it alone - and sing. Finding Myself, his debut solo album released last year, signaled yet another change in style. Fans expecting a continuation of The Night Life’s emotional pop were instead met with a collection of songs intended for the dance floor with an EDM edge. Looking back, Putty calls it “Justin Bieber mixed with Jason Derulo.” But while the kids were into this new beat-heavy approach, his future manager, Betsy Cothron, was not so convinced. At a show in Indianapolis with Aaron Gillespie from Underoath and William Beckett from The Academy Is... (at the time purported to be Putty’s last performance after a trip to LA saw him become disillusioned with the industry), Putty was “discovered.” There was just one problem: “She loved the music but wanted to know why I was doing this dance pop,” he says. “She said, ‘Your songs are great, but the tracks aren’t’ and wanted to know if I had thought about going country, because my stuff was more singer-songwriter with subjects like love, etc.” Cothron suggested that Putty spend a couple of days in Nashville, subsequently setting up a meeting with Global Songwriters, an artist development company. On the surface, at least, it seemed like a smart move, considering the crossover pop appeal of contemporary country music. However, Putty would first have to learn some hard lessons. “It was great until they started evaluating my songs,” he says. “You won’t ever write a song first draft and have it be a hit - the best writers are re-writers. I wasn’t used to that. But they have to be blunt in this business. It was either learn how to run with the bulls or get trampled.” Spoiler alert: Putty did not get trampled. In fact, he’s currently working on a country-pop follow-up to Finding Myself, getting into publishing and preparing to move to Nashville. But even though the stars are aligning, he’s in no hurry to make something happen. “I rushed the last record really hard - and on some songs you can tell,” he says. “So for this record I don’t even have a release date. I’m recording in different cities over the next several weeks - just going wherever it feels right and writing whatever I write.” Still, Putty’s laidback attitude belies his tenacious work ethic and goal-oriented nature. “My dream is that when I accept awards for my music, I want to have to wear a tuxedo. That’s the plan. I don’t set a limit - I just try to aim as high as I can. Hopefully, that means arenas and Grammys.” Follow Jay Putty on Facebook. Junkyard Stereo

In demand country rockers easing up on bookings, concentrating on EP of original material

"W

e've never played a place where we weren't asked back," says Junkyard Stereo lead guitarist Kirk Rager as he attempts to sum up the appeal of one of the area's most popular cover bands. "Or, we've never played a venue just once - how's that?" No matter how you phrase it, this group of longtime friends from the southeast side of Evansville has been leaving crowds - and bar owners - wanting more since 2012. And yet, it all started on a whim. Singer Brian Conner was hosting one of his typical get-togethers around the backyard fire pit when the conversation drifted, as it often did, to music. "There's always a guitar involved [at these gatherings] and Kirk and I got to talking, saying there are no country bands around here," he says. "And we're old we've got families to raise. We needed to do something fun for us." As it turned out, bassist Paul Coleman and drummer Danny Jones had

68 |

also been discussing the idea of blowing off some musical steam on the weekends. The core of the band - rhythm guitarist John McKim would join later - was set and within weeks, they were up on stage at Lanhuck's (RIP) with a cherry-picked batch of heavier country songs, eschewing the "cry in your beer" weepers. After all, their background is more Metallica, Kiss and Godsmack. Or, as Coleman puts it, "We're guitar-driven, loud, in your face."

coming. Over the last four years, the band has built a very loyal following at various bars and venues throughout the tri-state, taking their interactive, unpredictable live show outside of Evansville at every opportunity. In fact, Junkyard Stereo's most devoted fans can be found in Fort Branch, IN at the Iron Horse. "It's a crazy crowd - they embrace you and want to be a part of the show," Conner says. "They've supported us from day one."

That debut performance, which featured cuts by Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Cash, Jason Aldean and even grunge rockers Seven Mary Three, laid the blueprint for Junkyard Stereo. But despite the great response, there was still some trepidation about the direction of the band. "We really wanted to be different - which was scary, because when you mention 'country' to some people around here, they don't want to give you a shot," Conner says. They needn't have worried. Within hours, seemingly, the phone was ringing with more offers. And they just kept

But perhaps the biggest and craziest crowds of all are at the area bike rallies - such as Hogrock at Cave In Rock, IL and Hawg Valley in Graham, KY - both of which Junkyard Stereo started playing last year. Even at these events, where country music is king, the band still stands out. But, as Conner explains, neither the venue nor the size of the audience really matters much. "We've played in front of eight people and 8000 people. Regardless, we play every show like it's Madison Square Garden. We have put our heart and soul into this." And that's not hyperbole.

Now into their fifth year of steady gigging, the guys have canceled only once when, just minutes before hitting the stage, a sudden case of laryngitis hit Conner. That level of professionalism and reliability is somewhat rare these days; but it's also taken its toll on the band. Not surprisingly, it's difficult to hold down full-time jobs, raise families and rock for hours every weekend, especially when you factor in travel time. So, Junkyard Stereo is scaling back their bookings for the next several months to concentrate on a new project. "It was time to put out some original material," Rager responds, when asked why this hugely popular cover band decided to shake things up. "Towards the end of last year, we started throwing around some ideas between us for an EP." Just like Junkyard Stereo's democratic approach to live shows where anything goes, the songwriting is a shared adventure. "Paul and Kirk write the music, but everyone contributes to the lyrics," Conner says. "And if you really want to pin down what we're trying to sound like, think Blackberry Smoke, The Cadillac Three - that's what you're going to hear from us." Perfectionists to the core, the band is serious about getting the recording just right - no matter how long it takes. Thankfully, with a top-notch home studio at their disposal, money is not an issue. The plan is to send the final mixes off to Nashville for mastering with an eye on an early 2017 release. Despite the band's focus on recording, you can still catch them live this month when they play Turkey Testicle Festival ("absolutely insane - the most fun of any show we play") at Haubstadt Community Park on April 30. In May, they'll rock both Diamond Barbecue in Sullivan, IN and Hawg Valley. Follow Junkyard Stereo on Facebook.

The Curse of the Saratoga Remains by John Thurgood

I

t was widely believed that the Saratoga remains were cursed, but we didn’t start to actually believe the myth until we started to find dead rats in odd places. We would find them in the morning, lying on a keyboard in the botany department or in the supply cabinet in the paleontology department, sometimes just a head or a tail but other times the whole body, flattened like it had been crushed to death before finding its final resting place on some piece of equipment that we would begrudgingly sterilize before starting our day. It was mostly annoying at first. Dr. Hunn was confident that the rats were only a cause of a dramatic shift in weather patterns that had occurred that late autumn, but when Sara Cartwright found the decapitated head of a cat in her purse, we started to ignore Dr. Hunn’s rationale. A few of us got together and asked the museum curator if it was possible to return the Saratoga remains from whence they came, but the curator didn’t understand what a few decapitated animals had to do with one of the rarest archeological discoveries of recent times. We found the curator’s decapitated body in his office the next morning. His shirt had been ripped open, and on his chest, someone - or something - had carved what looked like three words. We brought in an ancient language specialist, and he said that it read, “Let me go.” Dr. Hunn argued that those words could have any number of meanings, so we locked him in the fourth floor janitorial closet, before loading up the Saratoga remains on the back of Tripp Skidwell’s Ford Ranchero and giving him all the paperwork and documentation he would need to safely get the remains past the border and on down through Peru. Each of us gave Tripp a tight hug before he settled in for his long drive, and with a slight tip of his hat, he pulled off in to the morning light, never to be seen again.

local/regional film

Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories Blood Moon Pictures

More gore, please: filming begins on sequel to last year’s surprise hit indie horror anthology

W

hen western Kentucky writer/ producer P.J. Starks drafted in talented screenwriter Todd Martin and all-around horror expert, illustrator, writer, and filmmaker Nathan Thomas Milliner to help develop an anthology of fright for serious fans of the genre back in 2014, the project certainly looked good on paper. But no one could have predicted just how successful it would be on screen. Filmed intermittently over the course of four months using various cameras and numerous directors, Volumes of Blood premiered to great reviews at the Owensboro Convention Center in March of 2015. But that initial success was no fluke. As word got out about the film, prominent horror websites weighed in and high praise followed. Quite satisfyingly for Starks and the crew, VOB was hailed as “The best damn horror anthology of 2015!” With so much attention given to the film, Starks inevitably began to plan a sequel - the first project under the newly created Blood Moon Pictures. An even bloodier and more chilling set of horror stories, VOB 2 brings together some of the region’s most creative minds. Milliner is back in the mix again, helming "Fear, For Sinners Here." The other six heart-stopping tales include "Murder Death Killer" (Jacob Bilinski), "Trick or Treat" (Sean Blevins), "A Killer House" (Jim O’Rear), "Feeding Time" (John William Holt), "Blood Bath" (Jon Maynard) and "The Deathday Party" (Justin Seaman).

The original film’s exposure has not only allowed for a sequel, it’s attracted interest from high profile names. In fact, VOB: Horror Stories will feature actor Moses Moseley, best known for his role as one of Michonne’s Pet Walkers on the hit AMC show, The Walking Dead. “I’m very excited and anxious to work with such talented actors and directors,” he says. “I’m most looking forward to seeing some of the special effects. I think it’s going to be an amazing addition to the original film and add a sense of complexity and depth to the franchise.” Also on board is WWE legend Sir Mo from Men on a Mission, making his acting debut on the big screen. For the soundtrack, Starks has secured Rocky Gray, drummer for We

What’s its name, precious, huh? What’s its name? It will tell us, precious, yes it must or we eats it up, precious! My name is Bilbo Baggins. And who might you be? Ah. Well, welcome to my home Mr. Baggins. You may find my greeting disingenuous as it’s really more of a lair than a home, but I assure you I welcome guests whenever I can receive them. They are, as you might surmise, quite few and far between. Please, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Smeagol, though many have called me Gollum. It’s all due to a ghastly esophageal twitch I’ve developed as a result of these rather bleak living conditions and poor diet. Excuse me, *gollum gollum.* There, you see? Perfectly dreadful. I hope you’ll forgive me if I seem a bit distracted. You see, I’ve recently misplaced a gold ring that’s very special to me. I’ve had it ever since I murdered my cousin for it. It’s truly the only thing I have in this world so I am really quite distraught. I wonder, if you could spare a moment, might you help me look for it? I know it must be around here somewhere. I could swear I just had it.

Actually, I think I may have found the very ring you described. I fell down just over there and my hand happened to land on a ring. It’s rather dark in here but you’re welcome to look at it and see. STUPID, FILTHY HOBBITSESS!!! THEY STOLE IT FROM US!! WE HATES IT, PRECIOUS, WE HATES IT!!!

pring is here! And so, too, the time to strip away those dust bunny farms and a few other forgotten unmentionables from under the bed. This year, alongside your spring cleaning, try out the latest trend in decluttering! As you spruce up your abode, take some time and really ask yourself which items do or do not bring you joy. Joyless things could be that loud and colorful vest you once wore to Bonnaroo, your boyfriend’s collection of Pop! Vinyls – or simply your boyfriend. That’s right! Spring is the time for new beginnings and pre-summer crushes. Not sure if your boo is the proverbial trash or treasure? Take a look at these example questions to help you decide. Did you receive flowers for Valentine’s Day or the flu? Is it easier to care for your obese, diabetic rescue dog or comb out your guy's Cheetos-encrusted beard? If you shivered at any one of those answers, you may be experiencing the effects of a man-child. It may be time for a man-ual upgrade. First things first, drop off that human blanket - the one which kept you warm this winter - to the closest Goodwill donation box. Then go celebrate and pray the only woman who treasures him is his mother. You’ve now successfully decluttered! One last little tidbit...your ex may have been a male comic if he possessed one or most likely all of the following traits: bad hygiene practices, crippling self-doubt and the sadness of twenty men. Happy spring cleaning!

Ask the Pastor

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

Q:

If God is love, loves mankind and wants to forgive us for our sins, then why is there a hell? The idea of hell is fraught with difficulty. Conservative Christians, who take the Bible literally, can quote chapter and verse about hell, “the lake of fire,” and eternal damnation. That is what they believe and you won’t talk them out of it. Your question presents one significant part of the problem. The idea of the God of Love eternally torturing and punishing people seems completely out of sync. I cannot reconcile the two ideas. But, there are various kinds of “hell.” Traditional definitions of hell often remind us that hell is whenever we are separated from God, from others, and from ourselves. Too often, we live this life in a hell of our own creation. Addiction is hell, abuse is hell - both separate us from one another and can lead us deeper into isolation and loneliness. Think of the number of ways we are separated from God, from others, and from who we are meant to be, and you’ll see varieties of hell. Authentic faith challenges us to bridge the distances we created and allow to be created that are the cause of separation; it dares us to reach out in compassion and kindness and heal the wounds that separate us from each other. Hell, especially the one we created for ourselves, is always conquered by the power of love. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

A typical night out for McMillen (second from left) and her "support group."

Leaving the Nest

Evansville is losing one of its all-around coolest residents. 25-year-old singer, musician, yoga expert and beloved coffeehouse manager Lauren McMillen has her sights set on Jacksonville, FL, ready to experience life outside the Midwest. Just before heading for greener pastures, she shared her thoughts on the upcoming move and what she'll miss most. I’ve been in Evansville most of my life but growth does not occur when you are in a place of comfort. I need some new challenges to help me grow as a person. But I never would have considered this move if it wasn’t for my boyfriend packing up all his belongings and moving to the Sunshine State. He needed a change of scenery. I didn’t realize how badly I, too, needed that until I visited Jacksonville back in January. It was eye-opening. My plans are...I really don't have any. Ha! It’s equally terrifying and exciting. I know that I would love to teach yoga and further my own yoga practice. I’ve decided to wait until I get settled to start looking for a job. I plan on looking for something part-time so I can get to know the area better and spend more time with Nick and my grandparents who moved to Jacksonville last year. One step a time! As an avid runner and someone who loves the outdoors, I'm really looking forward to the multiple beaches, national parks and trails around Jacksonville. The city also has so many amazing places to eat. So. Many. Run some trails then go eat some good food - perfect afternoon if you ask me:) But leaving my family is going to be difficult; I have the best support group here in Evansville. Knowing I can’t just stop by whenever I want will be so hard. Thank goodness for Skype! I'll also miss my Evansville Power Yoga family. I’ve created so many wonderful friendships through the studio. One friend in particular is Samantha Minnette. If it wasn’t for her I don’t think I would have made this choice to move. She is such a grounded and solid individual and is always putting others before herself. I can’t thank Evansville enough for the base it has given me: A great group of pals, an amazing place to work (shout out Penny Lane Coffeehouse!) and just the overall love from this tiny and sometimes behind city. Evansville, you’ve been great but it’s time for me to see what else is out there. Until next time... Lo P.S. I’m starting a blog for this time in my life: runningyogametal.blogspot.com check it out!

Everyone's a Critic

ust check out Facebook's most recent word vomit hub. Tri-State Restaurant Review is an open forum for anybody to give an actual, fair write-up or to completely trash someone's business... and of course, a place for business owners and employees to pump up their own business on the not-so-sly. Free speech and what-not, but what gets me the most about this whole thing are the lengthy, inarticulate, absurd paragraphs about a sloppy burger at a fast food restaurant. Get. Real. With. Your. Life. Only in America does someone sit behind a computer screen all day posting photos of trash and write a damn soliloquy about hot dogs. Yawn. After weeks of getting a gazillion notifications a day, I stumbled upon the mother of all posts. The complaint? A restaurant providing a water pitcher on the table prior to seating. "Who knows what's in there?" Water, probably. Concerned? Ask for a fresh one. Or your own personal glass, at the restaurant. I expressed as much, also reminding Negative Nancy that this is common practice in most upscale eateries outside of our neck of the woods and that we are very fortunate to have safe drinking water, which resulted in - drum roll, please - my banishment from the group. That's ok - I'm an adult who uses my words. If I have a crappy experience at a restaurant, I consider everything, then I address it politely with a manager if the server is too busy. Maybe they fix it, maybe they don't. I might give it another shot. What I don't do is go home and throw it out into the universe expecting that to accomplish anything except trying to make myself look like I know what I'm talking about. Go tell a homeless kid about your mediocre grilled cheese, and I'm sure some people in Flint would happily take that water pitcher off your hands. In the meantime, chew on your words for a while before writing a book about Grandy's and be grateful for what you have. Signed, Whitney Patterson, super foodie

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, the selfdescribed democratic socialist from Vermont, has been victorious in some of the early primary voting states. Recently, I spoke with some of Sander’s local supporters. They represent Southwestern Indiana for Bernie Sanders, an organization whose primary objective is to get Sanders on the Indiana primary ballot and make sure he gets elected. So what has attracted so many people to support this 73-year old-northeasterner? “Everyone knows our laws are bought and paid for, especially tax laws. That will change with Bernie,” SIBS member Dennis Leslie said. Amy Hale, praising Sander’s position to support a one-payer healthcare system, said she's discussed this with residents in other countries and they’re surprised America doesn’t already have this system in place. Gina Robinson complimented Sanders on his “sound judgment, being a problem-solver…and (Sanders) tells it like it is.” When I asked the group if they would support Hillary Clinton as the Democrat nominee, most were hesitant to commit, though some noted that she'd be a better alternative to Trump. This is a problem for both parties moving forward, especially if Trump and Clinton are the nominees. Both candidates are polarizing even within their own parties and could alienate some of the base. This election might hinge on the independent voter more than any other in history. Stay tuned. arts beer & reviews activities NEW BELGIUM CITRADELIC

Daniel Knight • 3 New Belgium calls this one a tangerine IPA. It’s brewed with Citra hops, orange peel and orange, among other things. It pours a crystal clear gold-ish orange color with a two finger, dense, fluffy white head and good retention. The nose displays moderate aromas of citrus/ grapefruit, citrus and herbal hops over the top of slightly sweet malts. The flavor is a bit of a letdown, in comparison. The citrus and hops are under the malts. The sharp notes promised in the aroma are muted and fleeting. It's not a bad brew. In fact, it's very drinkable. Others may love it. Doesn't leave a strong impression on me, though. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head forms on this golden IPA and never disappears. The scent contains generous amounts of citrus notes from the hops and tangerine peel used in brewing. The taste of the beer seems mild at first, but the hop flavors begin to shine through in the finish. This IPA might be mild enough for novices to enjoy. Pair this India Pale Ale with something spicy like Cajun, Indian or Mexican food. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This beer has a light orange color and nice carbonation. The orange citrus and hops come through the aroma. I was hoping for more citrus flavors but maybe they're interwoven in the strong hops; either way, I guess I missed them. I suppose I thought this beer would be a little sweeter.

TWO BROTHERS WOBBLE

Daniel Knight • 3.75 Two Brothers delivers this one in a one pint can (extra points). It pours a hazy golden yellow color with a two finger off-white head that settles to a thin layer with good retention. There’s also a lot of lacing that leaves a trail where you've been. The smell is bready with hints of grapefruit, citrus and pine. Nice. The flavor follows its aroma and is well balanced with a somewhat bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. This is a pretty darn good IPA overall. Paul Bragin • 3.75 A thick white head tops this hazy yellow India Pale Ale. Citrus scents dominate the nose, with some pine notes also coming through in the smell. The taste contains more hop flavors, with a considerable bite to this beer. Newer craft beer enthusiasts might not appreciate this one, but hopheads will definitely want to try it. Pair this beer with some strong cheeses, curry dishes or a caramel apple tart. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a cloudy orange beer with a good head. I could smell the hops like always. Overall, the taste reminded me of a lot of other beers, so it didn’t really stand out. On the plus side, it has a 6.3%ABV. But again, the flavor of the beer seems a bit simplistic - better than average, for sure, but not super.

NEW HOLLAND MAD HATTER IPA

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Mad Hatter is a reformulation of an existing offering with increased ABV and IBUs and a different hop profile. It pours out of a hazy-orange honey color. It displays a two finger off-white head with good retention and lacing. Its aroma includes citrusy hops. Grapefruit stands out in particular. There are also some hints of piney resinous hops as well. Like the smell, the taste is citrusy with a balancing malty sweetness from the underlying malts making it very drinkable. Its mouthfeel is medium and it’s crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. Of course, it wouldn't be an IPA if it didn't have a somewhat bitter finish. Paul Bragin • 4 A decent white head crowns this golden ale, but it eventually disappears. The scent profile contains a considerable amount of citrus presence and a faint hint of pine at the end. With the first sip of the beer the pine notes that barely registered in the scent really come to the foreground and stay in the finish. This smooth IPA might be able to win over people who think they don’t like IPAs. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a hazy, copper colored beer. I could smell the hops as in the standard IPAs. I could taste all the piney flavors, and it's also pretty smooth. I think this is much better than the standard IPAs and the fact that it has a 7% ABV puts it over the top.

arts beer & reviews activities GOOSE ISLAND FOUR STAR

It has just the right amount of carbonation and moderate hops and that sits really well with me. Some lager and pilsner drinkers may find it a little too hoppy for their taste. I recommend it. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A nice white head rests on the top of this golden straw pilsner. A good balance of malt and hops play against each other in the scent profile, with malt coming through first, followed by the hops in the end. The balance continues when drinking the beer, with the hops becoming more pronounced in the finish. This pilsner will be an excellent choice to have on hand for summer gatherings like picnics or ballgames.

Daniel Knight • 4 Goose Island calls this one an American Pale Lager which means that it’s brewed without cereal adjuncts (mainly rice or corn). It's of the Pilsner genre. It pours a clear golden color with a two finger white head that retains for a few minutes. Its nose is of malts, spices and mild hops. Its taste is light with drinkable body and clean finish.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a gold beer with good carbonation. I could taste the light malts and a little yeast. This beer is on the lighter side of what might be an IPA but is perhaps more bitter than expected for a pilsner. It's not bad but I was hoping for more from Goose Island.

MOVIE REVIEW

What is the first fruit to ripen in the spring? a. Blueberries b. Strawberries c. Raspberries d. Apples

Risen (PG-13) Sony Pictures

Most movies based on the Bible usually attempt to tell a tale based solely on scripture and theorize events revolving around two or three passages. Risen tells a different kind of biblical story. Yes, Risen is set in biblical times and has its usual cast of biblical characters. But the story takes place between the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his ascension at the sea of Galilee and the quest of one Roman seeking the truth. Clavius, a Roman Tribune who reports directly to Pontius Pilate, has just returned to Jerusalem after a hard fought battle with the Jews. Battlefatigued and weary, Pilate tells Clavius of the crucifixion that just took place. After Jesus’ death, Clavius takes his body and places it behind a rock. Once Jesus’ body is reported missing, it’s his job to locate the body to prove Jesus is still dead and wasn’t resurrected as Jesus had predicted.

NEWS4U.ME

The next scenes provide an interesting insight into what could have been the Romans’ thinking during this time in their desperate attempts to find the body of Jesus Christ as they fear their loss of power. Playing the role of detective, Clavius begins to question followers of Jesus, including recognizable characters in the Bible such as Mary Magdalene, the guards at the tomb and the disciple Bartholomew. Clavius also questions witnesses who claim they have seen Jesus after the resurrection. When a report comes that Jesus’ disciples have been spotted, Clavius and his legions of Roman soldiers descend on the town. Here, Clavius finds the 12 disciples, Mary Magdalene and Jesus among them. This becomes the most poignant moment in the movie as Clavius looks Jesus in the eye. After Jesus disappears, Clavius helps the disciples escape to the Sea of Galilee as Jesus said this is where they would meet them. Risen is an inspiring movie that gets to the soul of Christianity through the unlikely protagonist of Clavius. He becomes a believer in the end as Jesus and his disciples show him acceptance and love. This is a movie worth seeing as it will make you think about a period not thoroughly discussed in the Bible. - Bryan Fox

DVD R EVIEWS The Girl in the Book (Unrated) Varient Pictures

Stuck in a thankless assistant editing job, the seductively sad Alice Harvey (Emily Vancamp, The Ring) goes through the motions as she awaits the lift of her writer's block. Not only beholden to the cutthroat industry of publishing, Alice is also at the mercy of her dismissive, patronizing, misogynist father (Michael Cristofer), who is a successful agent in the business. When Alice is appointed to handle the re-release of Waking Eyes, a novel by Milano Daneker (Michael Nyqvist, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), painful memories begin to flood her mind as she is forced to repeatedly relive teenage trauma induced by Daneker and memorialized in his tome. The feature film debut of writer/director Marya Cohn, The Girl in the Book is a prickly depiction of the ingrained notion of what women must do to get ahead in male-driven fields, and the glass ceiling that remains for those who deserve it of their own accord. With a slightly obvious direction, it's a bit strange in the sense of being portrayed as a psychological drama when the latter half almost gets passed off as love story. Besides the messy, rushed ending, the cinematography is both flowing and tense, with organic performances by newer actors and a freshly uncomfortable plot.

Piku (Unrated) Yash Raj Films

Set in the beautiful and bustling city of Delhi, Piku is an honest and heartwarming account of a complicated father/ daughter relationship. Widowed and eccentric, Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan, Agneepath) spends his days complaining about his bowel issues and diet while under the care of his daughter. He worries about her social life yet keeps her busy with his antics, and despite Piku's (Deepika Padukone) love for him, she's often short-tempered and sarcastic. They also have conflicting viewpoints on the issue of their unoccupied ancestral family home in Kolkata - she wants to sell it, and he wants to spend his final days there. In an attempt to sway her opinion, Bhashkor decides to travel to Kolkata by taxi. Irritated and unable to let him travel alone, Piku joins and the humorous experience ends up being exactly what they both needed. Directed by indie filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, it's a colorful and poignant view of the depth of familial love and sacrifices made when that love is marred by loss and illness. With well-deserved wins for Padukone, Sircar, and Bachchan from Aspara and Filmfare, Piku is a story relatable across all cultures and another fantastic film to add to Bachchan's impressive repertoire in Indian cinema. arts music & activities reviews Violent Femmes We Can Do Anything PIAS America I think there are a lot of Violent Femmes fans that would dismiss this album. Clearly, their best stuff was released on their debut album 33 years ago. But I think We Can Do Anything is pretty enjoyable. It features a lot of the same sounds that are present on their debut: acoustic guitar, minimal percussion, catchy melodies. It's certainly not a landmark of any sorts, but Violent Femmes deliver an enjoyable album for fans to revel in a familiar sound.

Kendrick Lamar untitled unmastered. Interscope Kendrick Lamar is back with his second official release in less than a year. Untitled Unmastered is an eight track follow up to last year’s outstanding To Pimp A Butterfly. With its brief 34 minute runtime, it feels more like a bonus disc to a would-be deluxe edition of TPAB than an actual album. Don’t let its brevity fool you, though; Untitled Unmastered is a great, politically driven hip hop release from the genre’s current king.

Animal Collective Painting With Domino It’s certainly hard to talk about anything Animal Collective puts out without comparing it to their older releases. In the 2000s, Animal Collective had one of the most impressive streaks of great albums. If you compare Painting With to any of AC’s older albums, you’re likely to be disappointed. However, the band's latest release holds its own. In a sea of bland indie rock albums, Painting With still sticks out as being more inventive and interesting than most. - Russell Finn

Chloe Charles With Blindfolds On Make My Day More polished yet unexpectedly gritty, Canadian old-soul siren Chloe Charles' sophomore album, With Blindfolds On, encompasses her singular, mature vocals and captures her radio-ready songwriting abilities without sounding like anything else on the airwaves. She's been deemed "Toronto's next big singersongwriter," a warranted label, touring nationally and across Europe, receiving the Lennon Award for pop, and winning the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Sultry, soul-bearing, and demanding of attention, Charles has made quite a stamp of her own accord. The orchestral quality that begins "Black and White" - an open letter to her late father, Noel Charles - is lump-in-your-throat beautiful with equally striking lyrics: "daddy did you miss me/ when you ran away from home/ to raise glasses with Mick Jagger/ while we're all alone/ I just wanna be your only girl/ wished you'd call me more than beautiful." Gone, maybe temporarily, is the coy giggle from her earlier work as she explores her darkness in "Take Me Naked" and "Hold Me," but "Fans" oozes gypsy swagger, avant garde in a Shara Worden sense. "Wool Sweater" is a tense composition, typical of younger Charles, weaving effects and instruments with her eccentric vocal stylings, and again in "Gold," as if Sade decided to front the Postal Service for a day. Favorite track: "Clover." More than interesting - eerily intoxicating.

CarLarans Cosmic Opulence Self-Released When Newburgh native Carlo Coles moved to Seattle last year, making music was not necessarily a top priority. He fell into it quickly, however, adopting the stage name CarLarans. Utilizing his smooth, clear vocals, keyboard, original material and mashups, Cosmic Opulence is a short yet rich little collection of ear-pleasing ethereal jams with electronic influence without sounding over-produced. "Intro: Take It Back" is a little chillwave and a lot of soul smashed into breathy lilting lyrics, blending easily into "DOPE," sexy and catchy. Cole's vocals on this track somehow remind me of Lil Wayne - if he would or could just sing - but it's not a bad thing. The rhythm is definitely bump-and-grind, but the composition is more sophisticated, and his rework of the Arctic Monkey's "Do I Wanna Know?" is almost uncomfortably carnal. Replacing thundering guitars and rock vocals with hip-hop beats and an R&B singer completely changes the game; it's possibly one of the best reworks I've ever heard. Of course, the eroticism of the previous track barely holds a light to "Candy Come Up" - good luck ever thinking about your favorite candy bar or confection the same way again. "Voicemail" is that long-distance-breakup song, a reverse/poignant version of "Hotline Bling." Damn. Honestly, it's better than a lot of what's on the radio... maybe we'll hear it there soon. Dig it. - Whitney Patterson

arts music & activities reviews Charli XCX Vroom Vroom EP Vroom Vroom The bubblegum Britpop anti-princess may be unstoppable. "Boom Clap" and "Break the Rules" dominated the airwaves last summer, and after the left-field success of 2014's Sucker, it makes sense to throw out more of that saccharine radio gold, even if it's on her own. With a new label in the works, Vroom Vroom EP is a sneak peek of what to expect. Collaboration with producer SOPHIE has given her a more granular edge with heavier beats, complementary to her crystalline vocals. The title track starts out like an M.I.A. banger, quickly receding into Charli's cutesy style, but it's hard to shake the nod. On the other hand, it's impossible for anyone to capture M.I.A.'s innovative lyrical style, probably because she has some years and real-life experience on the little lady. Regardless, there's no doubting its pop potential. "Paradise" features Hannah Diamond who is a bit overshadowed by hyper-tweaked repetition, and "Trophy" is all over the place - I'd rather be listening to Lil Mama - and couldn't even be saved by the Pulp Fiction sampling. Maybe I'm just old. "Secret (Shh)" is, for me, the best track - the deep house works if she'd get back to her more original sound. The flattery is bordening on shameful. Will I still jam it? Duh.

Aquarian Sun Aquarian Sun Self-Released Local musical wonder-twins James and Alex Wallwork and drummer Ross Elliott have been flirting with the experimental music scene for quite some time, disregarding the need to be crowd-pleasers while displaying humble, promising talent and gaining a doe-eyed following whether for their brotherly band or main projects. And they don't need to hide behind a showboating vocalist with profound lyrics - the instruments speak (often loudly) for themselves.

The Cult Hidden City Dine Alone Records Over a career now exceeding three decades, The Cult has worn many labels in regards to exactly what type of rock band they are - post-punk, goth, psychedelic, even metal (to those not quite sure what constitutes as metal). To me, The Cult is part of a rare breed of bands I simply refer to as rock n’ roll. They have managed to develop, and maintain, an instantly recognizable sound that doesn’t rely on flash or excessive production. Billy Duffy’s unique, yet grounded approach to guitar paves the way for the satisfying, but very efficient sound of Hidden City. As usual, the band relies heavily (as they should) on frontman, and iconic rock crooner, Ian Astbury. His charisma and vocal swagger season the album’s simplistic sound with more than enough flash and sizzle to keep things interesting. The songs on Hidden City seem to intentionally draw inspiration from almost every period in the band's more than 30-year career at random. They do this well enough to show that despite getting a bit long in the tooth, they still have plenty of gas in the tank. Unfortunately, a new album from The Cult will probably - and unfairly - go unnoticed in the nauseating musical landscape of 2016. But for life-long rockers like myself, it’s a fantastic reminder of a better time, and one of the better examples of rock n’ roll longevity. J. Robert Lobeck

The theatrical "Every Day of Your Life" says a lot about their sound, weaving distortion, anticipatory light screams on the guitar, and hints at impending face-melting, simultaneously ethereal and ominous - true shoegaze, bleeding into "Blue," with Elliott on beach-blanket percussion before snarling into deliberate grunge to accommodate muted vocals and pedal-work. "Shadow" definitely has a Deftones feel, but in a less polished or presumptuous way. Regardless, they pick up the pace on "Black Lung," another contemplative toe-tapper that's more metallic than most, ending abruptly before the fuzzy melodies of "Notch." Fall into a trance on "Wonderous Death," but be prepared to be rudely reawakened. They're refreshingly tough to peg - it's like there's an orchestra playing death metal and someone's trying to dream scream but they can't, so they threw a blanket over themselves. Let's just say this - they're not hipsters claiming you'd never understand, but down-toearth dudes comfortable in their craft. - Whitney Patterson
