elemeant spring 19
hello I’ve been in the commercial furnishings industry for over 30 years. Throughout that time, I’ve seen how our business has evolved and trends come and go. It is truly an exciting time as technology provides information on the effectiveness of spaces and as our partner, Steelcase, continues to lead the industry in evolving their product portfolio to meet the needs of users in different market segments. This spring, we are integrating many of Steelcase’s newest innovations into our WORKLABS. It is in our WORKLABS that we test new products and demonstrate the connectivity among people, technology and place. We love creating inspiring spaces for our clients and team members that allow them to reach their full potential every day. Thank you for taking the time to read through what is new and interesting in our world! Carlene Wilson, CEO

the new office We’ve all heard it before, that “place matters”. Those two words seem to be spreading like wildfire and making a big impact in the minds of creative designers, brand gurus and workplace leaders. But is there substance to the words or are they just the trend of the moment, readily replaceable by the next new phrase? And what does the phrase mean to a furniture dealer whose purpose is to teach clients that place really does matter? To understand why there has been such a clamor around the phrase “place matters”, we should look at the current battle for talent. The unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in nearly 50 years, and while low unemployment is great, it can create challenges for companies looking to attract new talent. With so many options available to job seekers, they have the freedom to be more selective – meaning that although organizations may have plenty of work, they’re struggling to find employees to complete it. What can companies do to keep the talent they have and attract new? That’s one of the reasons that place matters: working for a purpose in a space that has employees’ best interests at heart is something worth sticking around for. nVent, Minneapolis by Corey Gaffer Photography

When your team is working for a shared purpose, place matters because, used correctly, it can drive collaboration and productivity. Over one-third of workers in 17 of the world’s most important economies are disengaged, according to Engagement and the Global Workplace, a study conducted by Steelcase and global research firm Ipsos. So, give your employees space to fully engage with their teams. Spaces that empower collaboration and creativity, and areas that allow your team to strategize together. Offer spaces that balance perched seating with standing areas to maximize movement. Invest in shared technology to capitalize on participation and provide whiteboards and tackable surfaces to visually layer inspiration.
Place matters because employees spend an average of 90,000 hours (that’s ten straight years!) at work and want to be comfortable in settings that enable easy emotional connections. Ancillary furniture pieces that are seamlessly woven into the space, easily accessible, and offer a bit of privacy can enhance these emotional connections and mimic the comforts of home. Another way to bring softness into a space is to layer in biophilia designs. While living walls are currently all the rage, weaving in natural materials and colors also gives the effect of bringing the outside in. Because there are so many layers to how place matters, we don’t feel like the trend is going to fade anytime soon. In fact, we believe in it so much that we continually examine our spaces and push ourselves to ensure that our own WORKLABS really matter. For example, we recently took a microscope to our Minneapolis space by diving in with our partners at Steelcase and working through a Design Sprint. This activity, similar to what we practice with our clients, pulls together a group of individuals to analyze the space. Feedback from trusted partners in the A&D industry and data pulled from space analytics also help us verify which spaces are working and which ones aren’t. One big ah-ha! for us was taking a large,
underutilized ancillary collaboration setting and dividing it into two – one that offers a cozy lounge setting and one that integrates technology into a small space for two to three people. These new areas are more personal and will make it easier to have quiet conversations. With the use of Mackinac, a beautiful new space-dividing product by Steelcase, these spaces will better integrate with the aesthetic of our WORKLAB and give team members more choice in their settings. Additional new areas coming soon are an updated creative room and more places for teams to casually gather throughout our space. We love that the workplace is evolving to become more authentic and synergetic – and we can’t wait to keep sharing our space and our story of how place matters to our team and to you!

OH, HEY
Oh, hey! I’m Matt from our Arizona Atmosphere Commercial Interiors location. As the Commercial Real Estate- Strategic Alliances Consultant, I have a passion for weaving my love for technology, health, fitness, and design into my workday. I also have a passion for photography, that I try to showcase. With a degree in graphic design from Arizona State University, I gravitate towards innovation, progress and forward thinking solutions. Fun fact: while in the office, I try to stand about 75% of the time while working at a heightadjustable desk. Standing helps me feel fluid, adaptable, and focused.
r ox a n n e OH, HEY
Hi, I’m Roxanne, a Client Coordinator from our Minneapolis location! I received my degree in Interior Design from Seattle Pacific Universityin a city that continues to influence my design choices. I love using design features from many different eras and infusing them with a contemporary twist. My advice is to add a mixture of texture when creating a space to make it feel distinctive and personalized. I love spotting current trends and am always on the hunt for the next best thing to help spaces inspire. What’s your favorite place for inspiration in Minneapolis? I’d love to know!
OH, HEY
stacy
Hi! I’m Stacy and I have a passion for design that started at a young age. As the Design Team Lead in our Madison office, I would describe my design style as classic and curated with a bit of unexpected sass. Pieces that are currently inspiring me right now are the Coalesse Montara650 Rocker and Steelcase Mackinac, which both allow for comfort and wellbeing without compromising style and versatility. Soft colors such as gray and blush create a calming color palette, while pops of color give personality to any space. I need to work with a design until it’s right, but when it’s right, I just know! I’m eager, organized, and always looking for the next fun trend.
project spotlight Since opening their Minneapolis office in 2007, Boston Consulting Group has seen rapid growth, prompting the renovation of their downtown office. The company wanted to infuse nature into the space while staying true to their brand, so bringing the outdoors in was an important element of the project. What resulted was a space filled with green hues, use of natural materials such as wood and moss, open seating and innovative collaborative areas where team members now meet. Working with architecture and design firm Perkins + Will, Atmosphere Commercial Interiors provided the furnishings, which include calming spaces infused with biophilia and room for respite, along with 77 workstations, 9 conference rooms and multiple ancillary and collaborative spaces.
party (for a cause!) This fall, Atmosphere Commercial Interiors partnered with Steelcase + Coalesse by hosting the Bassline Table Charity Auction at Atmosphere’s Headquarters to benefit Project Success, a Minneapolis-based youth non-profit. This organization assists students with their purpose of helping them think about their futures, set goals, and create a plan for graduation. Project Success serves more than 14,000 middle and high school students in 19 Minneapolis public schools. To raise funds for this phenomenal organization, Atmosphere partnered with 11 local design firms to plan and create one-of-a-kind tables. The table bases were provided by our strategic partners, Steelcase + Coalesse, and the design options for table tops came out stunning and unique! Adrienne Diericks, Project Success’s Executive Director and founder, characterizes Project Success as “deeply invested in our youth because we believe the key to success exists within each individual if empowered to unlock it”. from Atmosphere and Steelcase + Coalesse will help expand their investment of helping students ignite success from within. At Atmosphere, our purpose is to enlighten organizations to the connection between people, purpose and place. While it is our goal to be a leading business that generates spaces to perform better, it is our passion to be a better neighbor. We are grateful to the architectural and design firms who donated their time, effort and creativity to craft the tables and to our attendees who helped make the night a success!
p ro du c t s we l ove Never before has there been such an amazing amount of product available for use in our commercial office or public spaces. Typically, you’d have to head to a dozen or more manufacturers to find this variety which creates added time and cost for the designer, dealer, and end user, just to achieve a varied aesthetic. Luckily, Steelcase understands this predicament and has made amazing strides in the past year to bring unprecedented variety to their portfolio, which means you can have any aesthetic you desire for your project without having to utilize more than one contact. We’re extremely excited about our new product partners and the variety they bring to our worlds, without complicating the process! Our new partnerships include West Elm Workplace, Bolia, Extremis, Viccarbe, and more. New product is hitting our WORKLABS now, so come in for a tour to see the new goods! We hope you love them as much as we do.
