Our industry by definition is one where practitioners have a lot of learning to do in order to become proficient in the first place, and once they have got there, they have to continue to learn and train so they can stay on top of all the latest technologies and techniques.

Being aware of this is a great start, but it is also worth examing the best ways of learning and understanding what ‘type’ of learner each student is. Now, some tasks and subjects by their nature are best suited to being taught in a particular way. Everything from theory based classroom approaches and out in the field learning by doing, take place in our industry, but its still worth thinking about how well di erent people respond to di erent types of learning.

A system EI has always thought holds water is the VARK Model, which first gained popularity in the early 1990s, and is especially useful if some students are having trouble retaining the required info.

The VARK model suggests there are four core learning styles which include visual, auditory, reading and writing, and kinesthetic.

Visual learners are better at retaining information when it is presented in a graphic depiction, such as arrows, charts, diagrams and symbols. This approach is similar to how designers use visual hierarchy to underline specific design elements, visual learners enjoy clear pictures of information hierarchy.

Often referred to as ‘aural’ learners, this group prefers listening to information that is presented to them vocally. These learners enjoy group settings where vocal collaboration is the focus.

Focusing on the written word, ‘reading and writing learners’ do well with written information on worksheets, presentations, and other text-heavy resources. These learners are note-takers and perform strongly when they can reference written text. They also tend to be the best at exams.

The final category is ‘Kinesthetic’, taking a physically active role, these type of learners are hands-on and do well when engaging all of their senses during course work.

Our industry is continuing to expand at a rapid rate. We want more and more technology in our homes to help us live, work and relax in comfort. We want that technology to look great, sound amazing and be easy and convenient to use. We also want that technology to be reliable, well-integrated and attuned to the way we live, free of the frustrations and limitations that people associate with DIY devices.

According to the UK Integrated Home Market Analysis - powered by CEDIA, the estimated current size of the professional integrated home market is £1.2 billion. What’s more, the vast majority of integrators who took part in this survey are expecting continued growth in the years ahead with 88% of companies forecasting revenue growth for their business in the next 12 months.

This presents a fantastic opportunity for our industry but also a major challenge. We all know that skilled engineers are in short supply. Clearly, we’re an industry

that needs to grow its workforce, and grow it quickly, to take full advantage of the expansion to come.

That’s why we have recently revamped the entire training suite at our York Education Centre to expand learning opportunities outside of Automation Programmer.

Within the training facility, we can now demonstrate how the Control4 platform interacts with a range of devices and technologies from di erent brands to help participants learn in a more practical and authentic way than is typically available in the conventional and very clinical training room set up.

We currently have options to view and interact with Binary ‘MoIP’ Video distribution, Luma security cameras and recording solutions, along with automated blinds and shades supplied by Q-Motion. Our entire building is one collective project that allows us to demonstrate that we have a little of everything - providing to the participants a wider view of products and technologies, and, therefore, integration possibilities.

By o ering these specific product and technical trainings, we’re opening the door to new entrants, helping them develop knowledge and a skill set to build a career whilst providing a confident subject matter learning path based on experience.

This CEDIA award-winning specialised network training programme focuses on the fundamentals of networking knowledge and experience required to help technicians design and install better, more robust networks. The course combines theory with hands-on practice, with six engaging fast-paced online modules to complete before a final exam.

We have made this training an online course to ensure that we can reach the widest possible number of people.

PCNA provides comprehensive and engaging course material that must also be applied practically using the equipment provided. Trainees are sent their very own network to build as they follow along with comprehensive online course work, giving pros the opportunity to participate in high-quality courses from home while also providing guided handson training.

Being an online course, it is available on demand. The course can begin as soon as an integrator receives the equipment kit required to complete the handson activities in the six online modules. Integrators can then schedule their own exam to complete their certification.

Completing the training arms technicians with the detailed knowledge and hands-on experience needed to design and install robust networks in connected homes and businesses, resulting in improved networking competency amongst technicians and system designers and, ultimately, happier clients which is what we all want!

This installation video includes an overview of what can be found in the box and the three easy steps of installation. It also includes a directive to visit the SANUS HeightFinder™. This is a handy online tool into which you can put your TV model number, select your SANUS mount and get precise measurements of where on the wall you should drill your holes in order to have

the TV at your desired height. Links to the HeightFinder are, of course, also included in the installation manual. The HeightFinder is perfect for installers, because it saves time and energy otherwise used on calculating the right spot to drill the holes, meaning the install is even more e cient.

USEFUL FOR EVERY INSTALLER

The aim of every SANUS installation video is to show how easy the installation process is, give some more details that will be useful during install, and of course to show more of the mount in action. Installation videos are great for independent installers who want to double check that they’ll still be getting the same simple and fast installation process they’re used to from SANUS, or just to refresh the memory if it’s been a while since installing a TVmount specifically.

OUT OF THE BOX EXPERIENCE

Our second video takes a closer look at one of the elements that simplifies the SANUS installation process. Our out of the box experience has been thoughtfully designed to ensure that you only see the relevant components and screws as and when you need them – feedback shows that experienced installers really appreciate this – no need to take all of the pieces out of the box and lay them on the floor looking for the parts you need, which can be tricky if you’re in a small space or

have the client walking in and out of the room! Keep things streamlined, tidy and manageable without any extra e ort on your part.

This video also highlights the hardware packs that come with SANUS mounts. We include a large selection of hardware to ensure that the vast majority of TV models will be covered, but of course only a few of the screws will be used. For the rare TV model that may require a di erent screw, our Customer Care team is available seven days a week and will happily provide the needed hardware.
