INTRODUCTION

A SMARTER APPROACH

A

s technology becomes more sophisticated and people crave easier and more streamlined applications, the smart revolution seems like an unstoppable tide. Everywhere we look these days, there’s an app, a home hub, a smart device, as more and more people look for ways in which they can save time and money. Now is the perfect time for the electrical contracting industry to take the proverbial bull by the horns and make the most of what smart technology has to offer their business offerings. Not only is skilling up the workforce important, so the right solution is provided for the right situation, but the opportunities to increase efficiency and save time on money during installations are plentiful. The first ECN supplement of 2018 discusses just these issues, and provides insight into how smart tech can be utilised in everything from lighting control to HVAC solutions to create more efficient and often more enjoyable spaces for people to live, work and play.

MEDIA DELIVERY OF THE FUTURE Evolving Connectivity 2018 – Thursday 26 April 2018 at the Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham

T

his year’s event focuses on the first major upheaval of spectrum change since the digital switchover. More of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) is being allocated for mobile use, so UK terrestrial TV is making the necessary changes required. For many, this heralds what they see as a migration of our TV viewing to a broadband delivery in the long-term. For the immediate future, it is time that UK households will need guidance on coping with channel changes. It is a pivotal moment in our history as the CAI celebrates 40 years of representation. Current senior executive of the CAI, Tim Jenks, will start proceedings at Evolving Connectivity 2018 by introducing his replacement, Peter Sealey, who will outline how he sees the industry’s leading confederation develop within a new framework of audiovisual delivery. Peter will overlap with the retiring Tim Jenks by joining the CAI payroll on April 6. This will hopefully allow a smooth transition until Tim Jenks ends his 24 years of CAI service on June 18 this year. Returning for another gaze into his crystal ball is the Digital TV Group’s chief executive, Richard Lindsay-Davies. He will again look at how the audiovisual market is developing.

4 | March 2018

CAI.indd 4

“This year’s event focuses on the first major upheaval of spectrum change since the digital switchover.”

Following on closely will be another chief executive, Ben Roome, who heads up DMSL/at800. Charged with mitigating the effects of the next frequency auction, Ben will brief the industry on how the viewers needing aerial attention as a result of the 700 MHz re-allocation will be handled. Graham Plumb, Ofcom’s principal broadcast specialist, will give the regulator’s view of the same topic. Freeview’s market director, Owen Jenkinson, makes a welcome return to talk about how Freeview remains a major success story despite the pundit viewpoint that internet–based TV is soon to be the major platform as frequency spectrum is eroded. SES Astra vice president of new technology and standards, Thomas

Wrede, brings an update on where UHD and 4K has reached, along with how signal distribution is adapting to the new satellite receiver technology capable of delivering UHD. Couple all this with the UK’s only nationwide exhibition dedicated to signal reception and networking and you have an unmissable event for the industry calendar. The plan and details of the event timings are still under review. The CAI has a dedicated website holding all the latest information relating to the event taking place on Thursday 26 April at Birmingham’s Motorcycle Museum. THINK SMART ABOUT LIGHTING CONTROL With the Internet of Things (IoT) all the rage, it’s the perfect time for electrical contractors to think about smart buildings. Yet, as John Mercer, senior product manager at CP Electronics, explains, the lighting control industry has long brought a ‘smart’ approach to improving efficiency and reducing cost.

D

riven by IoT, smart buildings are gaining wide acceptance amongst business owners. Just as people are getting used to connected devices and voice recognition at home, thanks to Alexa and the Google Assistant, they’re also looking at workplaces for ways in which smart technology can improve energy efficiency and reduce business costs. For savvy electrical contractors, there are opportunities to diversify into a custom install market. In all likelihood, this kind of connectivity should become a standard requirement in the next five to 10 years, so contractors who make the move now will steal a march on competitors and gain invaluable experience. As with any popular trend, there’s an element of jumping on the bandwagon, so it’s important to put practical benefits at the centre of any conversation about smart technology. The good news is that, when it comes to lighting control, thinking ‘smart’ is nothing new.

6 | March 2018

CP Electronics.indd 6

“For savvy electrical contractors, there are opportunities to diversify into a custom install market.”

The lighting control industry has been using elements of what we’d now refer to as smart technology for many years, including scene-setting, touchscreens, app control and voice recognition. As well as adding value to business owners and users, they are compatible with a range of lighting types, giving contractors plenty of choice when it comes to recommending the best configuration for a business. Fully addressable lighting controls, such as CP Electronics’ RAPID system, already provide interconnected lighting solutions within business premises across the UK and beyond. The first generation of RAPID was launched over 20 years ago and is regularly updated, making it a perfect example of how networked lighting control predates the current trend towards smart buildings. RAPID is an established and solid lighting control system that is trusted by building owners and facility managers, because it is designed to serve their needs. Offering patented energy measurement technology, RAPID provides

end-users with the ability to monitor in real-time the actual energy consumption, rather than a monitored average, of each luminaire connected to a Lighting Control Module (LCM) or RAPID system. The growing capability of RAPID means that we can evolve it over time. Recently, for example, we’ve created the ability for multi-room scene setting via cloud-based apps, which is compatible with Windows 10 devices – with iOS and Android also available as options – so that users of RAPID Scene Control can effortlessly control lighting scenes. Crucially, this move is driven by what’s right for our customers, not a desire to follow trends for trends’ sake. While the technology might be changing, the goal remains the same – to deliver convenient, cost-efficient and effective lighting control to end-users. SCOLMORE

MAKE THE SMART CHOICE Marie Parry, group marketing director with Scolmore, asks if contractors are making the most of the growing smart buildings market.

A

ccording to the latest market report from AMA Research – Home Automation Market Report: UK 2017-2021 – the UK home automation market is worth £160 million annually. It has experienced significant growth since 2010, as home owners seek out system solutions that include access, security, climate, lighting controls, home entertainment and communications systems. It describes the market for home automation products as a rapidly growing one that has benefitted from the spread of wireless and app-based technologies. Technological advances driving the home automation market include the progress of wireless controls and LED lighting, but also include the widening market for connected audio and visual content via home networks, and the adoption of ‘app’ driven control interfaces. With smart technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) continuously evolving, this presents a great opportunity for the electrical industry and there is a real prospect for more commercially-based projects. Building controls play a vital role in commercial buildings, helping to maximise energy efficiency and building performance, but it requires professionals with the desired skills to deliver the optimum results. It is more than important than ever, therefore, to keep up with the latest advancements available. As smart technology continues to develop, we are seeing more and more home automation integration with security systems. Those contractors who have embraced the opportunities to develop the security side of their business will be at an advantage, as the integration of security and building automation continues. Such is the pace of development that it is proving difficult to keep up with the raft of new products and solutions that are coming on board and this is where contractors should be seeking the knowledge and expertise of their suppliers who are, after all, responsible for developing and bringing these new products to market. At Scolmore, we aim to develop products and solutions that make installation projects quicker and simpler to achieve, and our range of intelligent wiring accessories

aims to strip home automation right back to basics to offer a simple system that has, at its core, accessibility and simplicity for the installer and end user. The Click Smart home automation range provides a system that makes it easy, quick and relatively cheap to adapt and update a home or building to provide extra security, energy saving, comfort and control for homeowners and other occupants. On the security side of the business, ESP is seeing growing demand for smart solutions to the security requirements on a range of building projects. The continued advancement in technology means that more products and systems are being brought to market that are easier to install and operate, and that means increased opportunities for contractors to update customers with the latest product developments in the security sector. Developed in direct response to the increasing demand from customers for Wi-Fi solutions are ESP’s 1080p wire free CCTV kits. Designed for the domestic market, the new systems have ease of installation and superior quality HD image capture among the key attributes – this all adds up to an ideal add-on product range for contractors to sell to customers. As a group, we have always put great emphasis on the importance of training and development as part of our service to customers. Having invested time and money to harness the latest technologies to develop cutting-edge products, we want to ensure that our customers are given every opportunity to understand how the products work and how they can be utilised

to best advantage on a project. We offer a range of training opportunities designed to keep customers up to date with the latest products, technologies and legislation, including a course aimed at wholesalers and contractors looking to expand their knowledge of home automation. By arming themselves with the latest information on products, technologies and legislation, contractors are in a prime position to add value to their customers. With contractors under increasing pressure to complete projects within tight deadlines and budgets, wholesalers can be advising them on products that will deliver faster installation, for example. The advances in smart technology will continue to affect the way products are specified, installed and commissioned and maintained. Ultimately this is good news, as it puts electrical contractors in a prime position to diversify their offerings and adds further revenue streams to their business. AURORA

SMART LIGHTING IN JUST 15 MINUTES Aurora Lighting explains how its AOne trade smart lighting solution offers multiple benefits to installers, as well as being quick and easy to install.

T

hanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), everyone from homeowners to small retailers and businesses can install a ‘smart’ and affordable lighting system, enabling them to control it locally or remotely from a mobile phone. These simple-to-operate systems, which are set to become the norm, present many benefits. Not only do they help save energy, the remote management and scheduling features give the impression of false occupancy when users are away, allowing for greater property security.

10 | March 2018

Aurora.indd 10

A new smart lighting solution designed for trade Continuously at the forefront of technology, Aurora Lighting launched its first smart lighting solution for trade at LuxLive 2017. The AOne is a smart lighting and control platform, powered by Gooee. “We wanted to offer contractors another string to their bow. Being able to install smart lighting, simply and quickly, presents a major business opportunity for them,” says Thomas Lane, Aurora’s smart product marketing manager.

Smart Buildings

27/02/2018 16:38

AURORA How does the AOne work? Suitable for multiple applications, the AOne provides greater energy savings, can easily be commissioned in less than just 15 minutes, comes as a starter or retrofit kit, and is specifically designed for the professional electrical installer. Adding extra rooms is also extremely easy and cost effective once the initial hub is installed. The AOne has been tested and created in-house and designed with the future in mind. “Working alongside tech companies like Gooee is key for us as our aim is to provide a system and devices that are interoperable with others including Google Home and Alexa,” Lane adds.

Multiple benefits for homeowners and installers Ideal for homes, offices and retail spaces, the AOne comes with several features, including scheduling and grouping, which allows lights to be programmed to dim, turn off and on at any time, and help manage everything from mood to energy savings. The beauty of this kit, which is considerably cheaper in comparison to most other existing smart lighting solutions on the market, is that it doesn’t require any specialist installation wires or training. “Some smart lighting installations can take a long time. We wanted to make sure contractors can use solutions suitable up to an enterprise level without any installation issues. It’s as simple as it looks, and installation is fast,” Lane says.

For the installation, locate the light or control switch in a chosen room and follow the wiring between the switch and light fittings. Place the AOne inline dimmer between the switch and the first fitting on the circuit. •C onnect the hub to your home router via the provided ethernet cable •D ownload the free AOne app via Google Play or the iOS App Store •T hen let the app guide you through the setup of the AOne inline dimmers By installing smart lighting into each room, and through the LED lighting that comes with the kit that it is currently being sold, homeowners will lower their energy consumption and therefore their monthly bills. For an even greater level of control, or when wiring in multiple circuits is a challenge, use the AOne controller behind each luminaire to create virtual circuits and scenes. For contractors, the biggest benefit of the AOne, which can be used in new builds or as a retrofit solution, it is extremely easy and quick to install. It doesn’t require any specialist installation wires or training.

AOne training sessions Although a simple solution, Aurora will be offering training webinars and regional hands-on sessions so installers and contractors feel comfortable when using and talking about this technology. Anyone who’s interested in more information can register interest at auroralighting.com/gb/ aone-training. Learn about AOne at auroralighting.com/gb/aone or contact Aurora on 01727 83 66 11

ONE STEP CLOSER TO A ‘SMARTER’ HOME Hamilton Litestat explains how easy to install solutions allow users to create, store and recall lighting scenes.

S

mart controls and devices have become everyday essentials for many in today’s ‘always connected’ life. This lifestyle change has delivered an increase in demand for smart lighting solutions – many of which come with integrated audio controls. Yet this technology needn’t cost the earth. ‘Off the shelf’, easy to install solutions, such as Hamilton’s smart lighting control, allow the user to create, store and easily recall lighting scenes all at the touch of a button.

Let us feed and entertain you

Wherever the music takes you

One such change is the increasing use of smart lighting within the kitchen environment. The function of this space has evolved to be the hub of the home, becoming more open plan. Lighting design has been a greater consideration in the kitchen during recent years, but now we expect the increasing use of smart controls to convert the space from one function to another. Additionally, with a DMX option, an RGB colour wash can work as accent lighting to highlight key features or can be used throughout the space to make it a more relaxing and welcoming atmosphere for guests. Full personalisation means that the lighting can be adapted to any time of day, occasion or mood.

This level of control is becoming increasingly popular as living spaces turn into ‘smarter homes’. Taking that one step further is Hamilton’s multi-room audio, which allows easy streaming of music in the kitchen and multiple rooms, whether for entertaining or simply enjoying the space. This creates a luxurious feel in a bedroom or bathroom, giving the experience of a top-quality hotel while in the comfort of the home. Users can even enjoy the benefits outside, as many systems have options for patio and garden areas. Hamilton Litestat will be exhibiting at the kbb Show on March 4-7 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham, Stand K80. ELECTRICAL DIRECT

BRINGING SMART TECH TO LIFE ElectricalDirect explains the benefits of embracing smart buildings, and gives a guide on the latest technology available out there.

I

f your customers are looking to save time, money and energy, and make their properties more secure, then smart home technology may soon become their go-to product range. Britain’s shift towards smart homes is growing at a promising rate and there has never been a better time to evolve your skill set to include these new technologies. Currently, the industry is worth just under £1 billion a year, and the projections for the industry reflect a growing demand that is set to continue. Being a new technology, tradespeople are still building their knowledge, with only 1,250 smart home technology installers estimated to be in the UK for what is forecast to be a £120 billion industry by 2020. Connected smart technology makes for a more efficient, flexible home (or office) – with the help of a smartphone app to take control of heating, lighting, appliances and security whether at home or away. From lights to doors, windows and everyday appliances, specialist trade supplier ElectricalDirect has created a guide for tradespeople on the types of smart technology available to help bring their customers’ projects to life.

Connectivity To turn a home into a fully connected ‘smart’ environment, the smart home ‘gateway’ simply needs to be connected to the internet, and the app downloaded which will connect products to a smartphone, before setting up the smart devices. Each brand will have its own unique app to download, but they can also be used with Amazon Alexa for hands-free, voice-controlled operation, such as turning lights on or off with a simple command. Many products do not even need a router or hub to get some of the benefits of smart home control. Switches and sockets only require a remote control to operate simple on/off functions, and as such, they can be a straightforward way of easing gently into the world of smart home. Remote control functions make it

to wirelessly controlling electrical appliances. The MiHome Adapter starter pack has a full 30m range and uses a high radio frequency, which means it does not even need a clear line of sight to turn off energy wasting appliances. To enhance security, remotely controlling some home appliances will help to give the illusion that the home is occupied when the homeowner is elsewhere, therefore deterring intruders.

Lighting

easy to turn off a number of sockets and switches at once, saving time – all done simply at the touch of a button.

Monitoring movement “Currently, the industry is worth just under £1 billion a year, and the projections for the industry reflect a growing demand that is set to continue.”

Motion sensors, such as the MiHome motion sensor, are placed around the property and can alert the home or business owner if motion is detected, and when linked with other products it can create scenarios such as ‘motion detected, lights on’.

Door and window security For security purposes, open sensors placed on doors and windows provide peace of mind when away from home by monitoring the movement of these entry points, providing an instant alert to the smartphone when either opened or disturbed, for example the MiHome open sensor.

Appliances Smart sockets (such as the Energenie MiHome double wall socket) will turn any electrical appliance into a smart product, enabling users to remotely control appliances, monitor usage and running costs. Remote control sockets and extension leads make it easier to control those hard-to-reach sockets, meaning there is a simpler, no-wiring alternative

Existing light switches can be easily replaced to create a fully remotecontrollable lighting system, where you can switch lights on and off, as well as dimming them, from any location. This is particularly useful for darker winter months, and for providing added security by illuminating an empty home. The LightwaveRF dimmer is a fully dimmable smart switch with an attractive stainless steel finish.

Heating Homeowners can also create more energy efficient zoned heating within a property by heating only the rooms in use. Simple-to-fit radiator valves from MiHome allow homeowners to adjust the radiator wherever they are and enable them to monitor energy usage from the app.

IFTTT (If This Then That) Many smart home products are also compatible with IFTTT technology, which links smart devices to external apps. IFTTT consists of a trigger (e.g. the weather app says it is cold today) followed by an action (turn on heater), or if the home sensor is activated, call someone from Outlook contacts. The possibilities of IFTTT are limitless and it is a great way of using smart home products to their full capabilities. For further information, ElectricalDirect has created a handy buying guide for the entire home, which can be found at www.electricaldirect. co.uk/landing/smart-home-buying-guide

ant to learn how to install smart technology into your clients’ homes and commercial properties. Then EI Live! is the event for you. Held over two days at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey, on May 9-10, 2018, the show offers the chance to meet hundreds of exhibitors and brands who want to train you to sell and install their products.

16 | March 2018

EI Live!.indd 16

But what is ‘smart technology’? Well in most cases its merely un upgrade to concepts and products you already fit. Take lighting for example. If you are involved in providing lighting systems, would you not like the opportunity to provide intelligent lighting that can react and plan, saving the client money? These easy to fit systems can also deliver pleasing aesthetics, helping customers set the right mood or simply make their home or business

a more pleasant place to be. Another aspect of the industry is creating full home or building automation systems which can control the client’s services and audio-visual systems. Technical advancements mean that many of these automation platforms are simple to fit, with no programming skills required. Your company can deliver automated control of lighting, heating, security/CCTV as well as other audiovisual systems for entertainment or

EI LIVE!

information sharing purposes. The smart building industry can also deliver the contacts and training you need to fit multi-room music and AV systems, providing a completely new, but easy to fit string to your bow. Whether at home relaxing or at work, the trend for connectivity and access to content has never been higher. Systems that provide access to audio and video content in multiple locations are, again, easy to fit and add another tier to the work you are already providing. Another key area that electrical contractors can deliver on is in networking. Modern intelligent lighting, entertainment, audio-visual and content sharing systems all need a strong network to work, be that cabled or wireless. The smart building sector stands ready to train your company in exactly how to deliver these crucial services, which are becoming as important as heat and light. Without them the world simply stops turning – why not be the one to deliver them?

Training and a warm welcome

The show and venue

Adding a new range of products and services to your set up can be challenging. However, the UK’s smart building sector is set up precisely to overcome these barriers. Every single company working in the industry today had to start somewhere; many electrical contractors have already make the move and are finding success. The reason they are able to do this is that the sector is led by specialist distributors, who have created a business model that revolves around providing all the support their dealers need, no matter what level of experience they are at. Training and support is not just an after-thought, but a central part of the distributor’s offering in this sector. Many have their own academies where companies can go and receive training, often completely free of charge. Online training and on-site support complete a picture which means new entrants or those with less experience will never be left on their own to cope when they have a question or query.

The event consists of a packed show floor offering a huge array of companies and brands to interact with and learn more. Live demos to see how the systems and products work are a real highlight of the show, so visitors can see first hand how to fit the products and how they perform once fitted. The Learning Zone delivers many talks and presentations on key topics and technologies, to provide an in-depth understanding of not just the technology, but how to be successful in this dynamic market. This year also sees the inclusion of the Smart Home seminar, set up and delivered by trade association Retra and one of the leading distributors in the sector, AWE. This Seminar has been specifically set up to provide an introduction to the sector for retailers, however the content would also be very relevant for electrical contractors too. As for the show itself, attendance is completely free, and the venue of Sandown Park has excellent road, rail and transport links. Thousands of commercial vehicle-friendly parking spaces await, simply drive up, park up and walk into the show – it could well be the most important trip you make this year.

ENLIGHTENING IDEAS B.E.G. explains how the first installation of its new DALISYS system is helping a new hi-tech comprehensive school building in Germany achieve its lighting vision.

B

lautopf School has a large 400m² learning centre, as well as smaller classrooms and corridors which are occupied for short amounts of time. This means lighting levels and timings needed to be flexible and responsive to the type of activity occuring in each space. The DALISYS lighting control system from German manufacturer B.E.G. was ideal for this large building complex because it can send individual operating commands, triggered by a user or the environment, to multiple zones simultaneously. The DALISYS is a high-performance, efficient lighting system which works on the principle of distributed intelligence to

B.E.G.

ensure a high level of operational reliability is achieved. Its modular, networkable system is also entirely scalable, as required. This advanced lighting management system includes a wide range of multi-sensors, including the new B.E.G. PureColour wellness sensor for control of light colour in tune with natural daylight. The Blautopf School cost around £10 million to build, so the B.E.G. DALISYS system was ideal for the learning centre as it will reduce the school’s energy consumption and bills by dimming lighting in certain zones of the large space which are not being occupied by students. The corridors also had B.E.G. DALISYS sensors installed as students gather together for short bursts in these spaces,

during break times. The products ensure sufficient light is available during these brief but busy times and then switches the lighting off when there is no activity, combining optimum energy efficiency with maximum convenience. This product also includes a ‘guided light’ feature which enables it to lead students through the building in a ‘pool of light’. The whole system works on one level, but also vertically in the entire atrium, over different floors. The B.E.G. DALISYS sensors can be distributed over several routers, connecting the light across subdivisions. B.E.G. also provided safety lighting. For further information, visit www.begcontrols.com

DOEPKE

SMART SAFETY Doepke takes a closer look at safety requirements for smart buildings and EV supply equipment.

S

mart buildings and the basic hazards associated with the use of damaged or faulty electrical equipment can be easily overlooked, due to complexity of the installation. For example, one of the control measures to reduce the severity of the shock hazard relies on the correct selection of the appropriate RCD, when connecting an EV conductive charging systems to the building supply. The existing clause 722.531.2.101 in BS7671 Amd 3 is an example of where hazard control requirements can be interpreted incorrectly, resulting in the loss of the additional protection measure. A common, but incorrect interpretation of this

clause (see below) is that, if it is not known that the value of 6 mA DC will be exceeded, then it is safe to use a Type A RCD. The clause states, “…The RCD protecting the charging point shall be at least type A… If it is known that the DC component of the residual current exceeds 6 mA then a type B RCD complying with BS EN 62423 shall be installed.” The revised standard IEC61851-1 2017 removes this ambiguity and the associated risk with the inclusion of the following: “Where the EV supply equipment is equipped with a socket-outlet or vehicle connector for AC use in accordance with IEC 62196 (all parts), protective measures against DC fault current shall be taken.

“The basic hazards associated with the use of damaged or faulty electrical equipment can be easily be overlooked.”

“The appropriate measures shall be: RCD Type B or RCD Type A and appropriate equipment that ensures the disconnection of the supply in case of DC fault current above 6 mA.” There are a number of technical solutions that can be considered to achieve this requirement, one of these being the AEV RCD recommended and specified by Tesla. Doepke Technical Publication 06 explains the reasons behind this important safety revision and Type AEV RCDs incorporating this new requirement. FS CABLES

BMS CABLES ON THE RISE FS Cables discusses the potential benefits of utilising BMS cables.

T

he increasing awareness of energy efficiency and lowering the carbon footprint has made building management systems (BMS) more attractive than ever. With research suggesting the BMS market will reach $19.25 million by 2023, it’s even more of an opportunity for electrical contractors to capitalise. Installed anywhere from hospitals, offices and prisons to shopping centres, data centres and high-end residential, BMS systems are widely used to control and monitor a building’s electrical and mechanical equipment. This gives the operator control of HVAC, lighting, fire systems, blind control, power systems, security systems, lifts and escalators to ensure energy efficiency, safety and security. The range of BMS systems available on the market is extensive, with options from manufacturers such as Trend, Honeywell and KNX. Offering a favourable choice for designers, specifiers, installers and end-users, KNX is a flexible, userfriendly and energy efficient BMS system. But despite the complex technologies it controls, the KNX cabling is relatively simple – connecting devices and systems using one or two twisted pairs. The KNX cable from FS Cables has been tested and certified by the KNX Association as being suitable for use on its systems, as well as being tested in the UK for CPR compliance. Available in green or white LSHF and bearing the KNX logo, London Underground (LU) approved versions are also stocked.

Most modern buildings now incorporate some form of BMS, focusing primarily on energy efficiency and saving costs. Whether that’s through proximity sensor lighting, climate control, door entry or security, they all work to achieve the same goal. Efficient lighting control in a BMS system is just one way of reducing energy and saving costs for building owners. Using BMS, lighting can be automatically adjusted, depending on natural light detected or amount of people in the building. The FSC range of lighting control cables cover most popular systems, including Crestron, Simmtronic, KNX, Control 4, Thorn, Mode and more. These cables are available in Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF), meaning they give off minimal smoke and toxic fumes. This is ideal for installation in public buildings such as schools, hospitals or airports where evacuation may be difficult in the event of a fire. Fire safety is another major reason why owners may consider installing a BMS system into their building. High performance fire survival cables, such as the Draka Firetuf data range, provide an excellent solution for connecting BMS with fire systems. The Firetuf fibre, data and coaxial ranges are designed to carry on functioning in the event of a fire and provide vital signals to voice alarm, CCTV and allow systems to be

shut down in an orderly fashion. Meeting specific fire resistance requirements, some are also available with LU approval. Aside from the safety aspect, it has also been claimed that BMS systems can increase productivity and performance. Heating, cooling and ventilation can be automatically controlled or manually adjusted using an interface to set the optimum climate. Control cables, in particular the Niltox LF-319 and its dual screened sister cable Niltox LF-329, are used to provide power and control to heating and ventilation control systems. Available in a range of conductor sizes and in either number of colour codes, from two to 25 cores, the Niltox LF-319 and LF-329 feature a LSHF sheath for installation in public buildings. Since CPR became a requirement in July 2017, FS Cables has had hundreds of cables independently tested in the UK to EN50575, the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). As BMS cables are primarily installed into public buildings, take care to assess whether CPR has been specified. If it has, then it’s important that the installation meets this industry regulation. FS Cables holds probably the largest range of BMS cables in the UK. All products are available from stock for next working day delivery to most of the UK mainland, free on orders over £100. CEDIA

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Due to today’s ever-growing reliance on digital and smart appliances, electricians are facing greater pressure to install complex cabling infrastructures needed to support smart home technology. Matt Nimmons, EMEA managing director at CEDIA, highlights the importance of installing an efficient, secure and future-ready residential cabling system, and explains how electricians can provide clients with the right cabling requirements for the modern home.

T

echnology is increasingly infiltrating the home. With virtually all household technologies part of the home network, a simple phone line and TV antenna is no longer adequate to support the technology that is now available to homeowners. As a result, many require comprehensive wiring infrastructures and data network systems that are suitable for the modern smart home. In order to prevent opportunists from ‘doing it themselves’, it’s crucial for electricians to offer a service that homeowners can benefit from. A correctly wired infrastructure at the very first stage of building or renovating is fundamental to homeowners who want technology. A common phrase heard amongst the home technology industry is ‘the most expensive cable you have to install is the one that did not get installed in the first place’. The basis of a smart home is the infrastructure; the cables. Not all properties require technology at this stage, but it is crucial for the correct wiring to be in place so that it is ready for the future. A wired infrastructure can set up the home for future applications, whilst still preserving the décor of the home and adding value. The rise of ‘smart’ wiring presents a great opportunity for electricians to offer a service that homeowners can benefit from. The home technology sector presents a lucrative opportunity for electricians to expand their professional reach and create new business. By offering a more complete service for the home, including specialist services, such as fitting reliable cabling infrastructure, electricians can guarantee their businesses will be more resilient to the tough times and pick up more work from new and existing customers.
