WE CREATE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE CONNECTED WORLD A wave of digitisation is sweeping our world and increasingly shaping and altering how we act and live, our homes and workplaces, businesses, public facilities and spaces – even entire cities. It’s up to us to

In every system, multiple components interact in very important ways. Many of our products incorporate a number of basic AV and IT functions to perform a range of tasks, even over long distances. This is the philosophy that guides us – Combined Connectivity Solutions.

BIG CHANGES INSIDE EI First up this issue, we have to say how sad we were to hear the news of the closure of SVI (Sound Vision Install). Yes they were competitors of ours, however the CI universe is a community and it’s always good to have healthy competition, so it’s never good news when a title that has been around as long as SVI has to close its doors. Stuart Pritchard, editor of the magazine, is a top man and EI has spent many a press event enjoying his company, not to mention Bonnie Howard and Chantell Keston, the magazine’s sales team. It will be a real shame not seeing the whole team at future industry events and we wish them all well in whatever the future holds. Now the eagled eyed amongst you may have already noticed something different about the magazine. After a decade weathering the storms of the CI ocean, we thought it was high time we gave the good ship EI, a fresh lick of paint and some new decking, so we hope you enjoy the magazine’s new look. The CI industry is

fast moving, sleek, in control and cool, so we hope our new design reflects that and serves up all the top quality info inside in the best light possible. A fresh design is not the only change we have introduced. A new more comment/ opinion based approach is being taken with lots of the content. EI has always featured comment and content mined directly from the coalface of the industry, but we are increasing that with a new series of interviews with some of the industry’s biggest names. Check out interviews with Vince Bruzzese, inspirational founder of Totem Acoustics, and John Bagby, MD of Paradigm, Anthem AV and Martin Logan brands. There are loads more to come, so look out for those and if you have a suggestion on who you think we should give a platform to, just get in touch. We are also providing more space for case studies and will of course continue with EI favourites like Day in the Life, Smart Thinking and Top Tips. Dan J Sait Editor

ABB SHOWCASES BIG PLANS FOR SMART HOME With spending on smart home services, including home automation, expected to reach $100 billion by 20201, ABB has big plans to expand its presence and showcased its expanding line-up at the recent IFA show. The company said these introductions are designed to provide the next level of safety and comfort for residents and unlock the potential of ABB’s new open API platform. Highlights include the new ABBfree@home Alarm-Stick and the certified integration of Sonos with ABB i-bus KNX. ABB also demonstrated the potential of its new open API platform, which gives scope to integrate hundreds of third-party apps and solutions with ABB’s technology. The company is a big believer in open systems and trailed heavily its new open API platform designed to provide a central portal to attract developers to work with different APIs that integrate with ABB Smart Building’s ecosystems. Oliver Iltisberger, Managing Director of ABB’s Smart Buildings business, said, “ABB has been at the forefront of accelerating progress in smart home technology for decades. We know that when it comes to people feeling at home, security and comfort are two of the most important factors. That’s why we’ve developed new and improved solutions to take smart home living to the next level, so that customers rely on ABB technology for a safe, smart and sustainable way of living.” Amongst the key platforms for the company is its

ABB-free@home app which already has almost five million components installed worldwide. With the app all ABB-free@home functions can be controlled remotely with the geofencing function allowing predefined scenarios to be set when the homeowner enters or leaves a defined area. The home automation system provides over 60 functions and can integrate up to 150 devices per system. With possibilities for wired and wireless connectivity and ABB’s new open API, which is now available for integration with third-party systems, ABB-free@ home is designed to make home automation easier, accessible and affordable. Other products launched at IFA included the Alarm-Stick, which integrates ABB’s smoke, heat and Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors into ABBfree@home and ABB-secure@home, billed as a user-friendly intrusion and alarm system for residential properties. The company also underlined that its BuschControlTouch KNX app solution has now been officially certified for integration with Sonos. ABB new.abb.com

SONANCE ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE JAMES LOUDSPEAKER Sonance has announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire James Loudspeaker. Established in 1999 by a group of dedicated audio engineers, craftsmen and entrepreneurs James Loudspeaker has established itself as a world leader and innovator in both high-performance residential and commercial audio solutions. Providing products for homes, businesses, and marine applications, James Loudspeaker takes pride in its ongoing spirit of innovation, customisation capabilities, and excellence in design and build quality. James products are known for delivering a strong entertainment experience while maintaining a minimal visual presence in interior or exterior applications. “We could not be more excited to bring James Loudspeaker into the Sonance family,” said Ari Supran, CEO at Sonance. “Their history of innovation, their mastery of customisation and their passion for aesthetics are right in line with our core principles here at Sonance: that technology should disappear into architecture, that authentic partnerships are what set us apart, and that our long, proud heritage of innovation drives everything we do .” “James Loudspeaker was not for sale,” added Mark Schafle, James Loudspeaker CEO. “After a chance encounter and subsequent conversations, we

learned that our customisation and manufacturing capabilities fit perfectly with the Sonance strategy and culture. We are thrilled to become part of the Sonance family, and we look forward to taking what we do to the next level.” Sonance and James expect the deal to close before the end of the year and will continue to operate as separate companies while the combined team learns what makes each brand unique. Over time, Sonance will identify areas where the strengths of both companies can be leveraged to provide maximum value to their combined customer base. PULSE CINEMAS ANNOUNCES RTI TRAINING Back in May of this year, Pulse Cinemas announced the company had added the RTI automation platform to its portfolio of brands. With one successful training initiative already completed, the company has announced new dates and training details. The dates for this free-of-charge two-day training course are: October 14-15, November 18-19 and December 9-10. Hosted by Internal Sales Manager, Simon Schino, along with new RTI expert Russ Hughes, joining Pulse Cinemas as Technical Sales Support, these two-day courses act as an introduction to RTI’s Integration Designer APEX programming software to get installers up and running with this automation platform. First introduced into the market in 2017, APEX is the backbone of RTI’s control and automation solutions, created to deliver the performance installers need, but also to simplify and speed up programming time on each project. This Windows-based platform also provides access to other features such as the RTiQ intelligent remote monitoring solution. Simon stated, “With the success of our last RTI training initiative, we wanted to take things up a gear and offer three two-day opportunities for installers to really get to grips with the system. If

you are new to the system or even if you have used it before, this course will provide invaluable insight into just how good this platform is, as well as how straight-forward it is to create the right functionality for all of your clients. “Places are limited so I highly recommend booking early and getting the date set in stone for this important opportunity. All the courses are held at Pulse Cinemas HQ where you will, of course, be treated to our famous catering; so staying well fed and watered during the event is guaranteed. While there, you will also be able to enjoy the other AV based experiences we offer. If you haven’t seen the recently updated cinema and media room demo spaces, it’s a real added bonus to check them out.” Simon added that all those who attend will be able to purchase the specially created RTI demo kit, C2K1, at a special price. A straight-forward way to deliver a smart home or smart office project, the C2K1 Custom Control Kit delivers control and automation of AV, lighting and security. INVISION UK ADDS SONY HOME CINEMA PROJECTORS Invision UK has announced that it has been appointed as a distributor for Sony home cinema projectors. From Full HD 3D to 4K, Invision said the Sony range of home cinema projectors deliver the most breathtaking, fully immersive and entertaining movie, sport and gaming experiences. Invision also argued that Sony has a projector for every room: from large home cinemas to smaller living spaces, each projector offers easy installation, sleek styling and low running costs. Ideal for large home cinemas, the most advanced Sony projectors such as the VPLVW870ES, combine a long-lasting laser light source with the same SXRD technology found in its professional cinema projectors. For image quality across the screen, the VPL-VW870ES features an All-Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens. This largeaperture lens adopts an all-glass design for its 18 elements, including six extra low-dispersion (ELD) elements. This ensures optimal convergence of the red, green and blue primaries, even at the extreme edges, for a clear and vivid image. For smaller locations, Invision highlights the VPL-VW270ES and VPL-VW570ES home cinema projector designed to bring the cinematic quality

of 4K into the home. Both producing true 4K resolution images with the Sony native 4K (4096 x 2160) SXRD panels – over four times the quality of Full HD. Designed for both home cinema rooms and smaller living spaces, these projectors deliver detail-packed images and lifelike colour coupled with 1,500 and 1,800 lm brightness. Eamonn Halligan, UK & Ireland Sales Manager at Sony said, ‘We are pleased to confirm that Invision will now be an accredited distributor for the Sony home cinema projector range, joining our existing network to support our continued growth in the UK market.” Mark Taylor, Invision’s commercial director, added, ‘We are truly proud to have Sony as a partner. Having been long-time fans of their projectors, we are delighted to now become their distributor. The new Invision Home Reference Cinema features a stunning Sony projector, and we look forward to demonstrating its extraordinary capabilities to our customers when they visit our industry-leading facility.” Invision UK www.invisionuk.com

HABITECH

STEP INTO HOSPITALITY AV When new priorities call for your skills, Habitech will help you to compete for the rewards. Commercial Manager Daryl Brennen explains how great products, training and design support will smooth your path from CI to Commercial AV. In spite of everything, the UK hospitality industry is putting on the pounds. According to ONS figures, it’s now worth £100 billion, up from £86 billion just four years ago. But business owners are far from complacent about the soaring footfall. Against a backdrop of increasing competition, they’re feeling the heat from ever more demanding customers, and this is driving a desire to differentiate. PWC’s recent leisure trends report, which surveys hospitality CEOs around the globe, warns that in the face of increasing commoditisation, businesses “must provide a more highly personalised experience that goes beyond the needs of their particular customer base—and rely on word of mouth and allegiance to keep them coming back.” In hospitality spaces everywhere, a budding

instinct to be distinct is boosting the popularity of the ‘boutique’ model, which prioritises flawless design detail and impeccable service in return for loyalty and repute. In this more enlightened ‘marginal gains’ environment, everything is up for perfection, not just in areas such as catering, décor, hospitality and service, but in the experience of AV as well.

FLAWLESS MAKEOVER

According to hospitality’s new evangelism, the doctrine of flawlessness has to be nigh-on universal, and this gives your business a big advantage, because no industry understands ‘flawless’ as completely as resi CI. In a recent example, long-established resi installer Ashway Smart Homes won the business to integrate AV within the newly refurbished Manor House hotel near Huddersfield. Shaun Hawkins and Lee Garvey beat commercial rivals because the owner realised the value of superdiscreet full-range sound to the overall calibre of his guests’ experience. He understood that refined ‘custom’ installation made his business more distinctive and memorable. Not only was Ashway’s resi portfolio and experience crucially persuasive on the discreet design side, its ability to generate and distribute clean, full-frequency

audio meant that overall volume levels could be reduced without affecting the perception of quality. Thanks to Ashway and Habitech’s support services, Manor House customers can enjoy their conversations in an atmosphere that is subtly more audiophile, sophisticated and discriminating. In this way superior audio quality continues to play a small but significant role in generating the boutique experience that wins new business for the Manor House. As is typical with larger commercial projects, the installation also involved seamless high quality video and networking, enabling Ashway to demonstrate a full palette of resi skills to an influential constituency day-in, day-out. Says Lee Garvey “this was something of a dream job… it wasn’t a ‘no expense spared’ brief but it was generous enough to allow us to flex our creativity in delivering excellent results. Plus we have a happy customer.”

ONEAV

ONEAV AND CEL-FI QUATRA: WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU? OneAV has been working hard to make its transactions with customers more beneficial. The company wants to be more than a box shifting AV distributor, instead, it’s vision is to be a one-stopshop and complete added value partner. OneAV says it wants to become a partner that will go above and beyond to support dealers, to better understand projects and help to quote, as well as manage and sell future projects with the confidence that there is the support and training needed. For example, an installer that wants to work with a product such as Cel-Fi will need more than just an instruction manual to specify and plan a quality install. That’s where OneAV comes in. The company has now invested in its OAV learning team and has created specific brand ambassadors that work directly with the OAV sales team to provide a resource for sales and technical needs.

Cel-Fi’s latest product range includes QUATRA. It delivers a cellular signal up to 1000x stronger, using CAT 5e cabling for radio frequency and power over ethernet, with no signal attenuation right to the perimeter of the building. Usually, installing similar solutions to the QUATRA can take months. OneAV has training sessions available allowing you to install the QUATRA in less than a day.

GET CONNECTED

Joe Fletcher, Head of Technical Sales and Product Training, as well as being the brand ambassador for Cel-Fi, explains more about the QUATRA and the installation process, “Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time visiting OneAV partner projects to help them specify Cel-Fi, as well as running training courses. The product is remarkably similar to the video matrixes we all know and love in terms of

cabling requirement, and I have to confess, watching installer’s eyes go wide when they realise how simple it is hasn’t got old for me yet! There are two main components for a successful QUATRA installation, ‘donor’ signal, and distribution. Donor signal is the term we use for describing the initial ‘on-air’ signal that we are going to distribute around the location, and this is by far the biggest hurdle to overcome for a well-performing QUATRA installation. “Once you have established where you are going to place your ‘donor’ antenna, you will need two runs of 50ohm RF cable to your main QUATRA network unit. In terms of specifying cable, you’re looking to minimise the loss in the 2100Mhz range. This type of RF cable is a lot thicker than typical RF cable and this will be the biggest challenge to overcome if retrofitting a QUATRA system in a building with existing cabling infrastructure. Once this has been done we move into familiar territory, the ‘network unit’ powers up to four ‘coverage units’ via Cat5e, QUATRA supports cable runs up to 200m, and all the coverage units are powered via PoE. Sound familiar?” Joe adds, “The response that we’re getting from the market has been great so far and our focus of working in partnership with our installers is the right approach. In particular, given that we are seeing a lot of traction from the more complicated prime residential and commercial projects, I think that it helps make the whole thing more efficient and simpler if we can be a full, one stop shop, resource for our dealers. “It’s my personal opinion that every single CI should have this in their arsenal of solutions. How many customers can you think of where you could have provided this in the past? I encourage anyone who would like more information or to discuss a potential project to give me a call. I’m here to work with you alongside your company to ensure you can complete your Cel-Fi install in the most professional, cost-worthy, and time-saving way possible.” OneAV would love to hear and work with you and your team, so get in touch! PULSE CINEMAS

JAMMIN’ WITH JAMES LOUDSPEAKER Supplied and supported in the UK by Pulse Cinemas, one of the most innovative highperformance speaker brands on the planet, James Loudspeaker had a busy and inspirational CEDIA Expo with big news on the future and some cool new products. Big news breaking at the show was for Sonance to acquire James Loudspeaker by the end of the year. CEO of James Loudspeaker, Mark Schafle, explains, “Over the course of nine months of discussion, both Sonance and James realised as one that we would offer our clients so much more if we joined forces. Just some of the benefits delivered will be combined engineering to reinforce our goal of providing superior acoustic performance in hidden products. This will provide our domestic and international partners with product solutions spanning the complete audio spectrum and delivering innovative approaches not only to products, but marketing and sales to provide our partners with the best tools!” So, the message to Pulse Cinemas’ UK customers is that it’s not just business as usual for James Loudspeaker, but expect to see lots more from the brand in the future. So how did the news go down at CEDIA Expo? Mark says, “CEDIA was a buzz with the acquisition. Dealers realised the power of ‘one’ in this acquisition. Anyone familiar with the two brands realised this deal made perfect sense. In fact, Ted Green (of US news site Residential Systems) will be doing a follow up series on ‘They did this merger right’.”

THE POWER OF ONE

Products and innovation-wise, the show was a chance to showcase the new PSB56 powered soundbar. This feature packed product offers universal AC 100V to 240V capabilities, auxiliary analogue in so a source device with analogue

line output such as CD, DVD, network player, preamplifier, smartphone, tablet and the PCs/ laptops via 3.5mm headphone jack can all get involved. There is also coax digital in, so those same devices with digital out are compatible too as well as optical/tosslink to further increase digital connection possibilities. There is also HDMI-ARC in, subwoofer pre-out via RCA cable and an optional 2.4GHz wireless transmitter. The connectivity keeps on coming with source device compatibility over Bluetooth. The speaker itself boasts Quad 20mm aluminum dome tweeter, dual 5 1/4in aluminum cone woofers, 50W X4 or 100W X2 channel amplification and an active crossover with PEQ via DSP. A feature of course strongly associated with James is creating bespoke designs and the new soundbar is no different. The product comes in custom sizes to suit screens of 55in and above with unlimited colour matching too. Another seriously cool James Loudspeaker offering was also on show with its ability to offer ‘hydro-dipping’ to create a myriad of design possibilities for the exterior of speakers to either hide them or make a design statement. So, what is hydro dipping? Basically you can take any image or photo and convert it to provide the finish that goes on the exterior of a product. Mark says, “Stunned amazement would be the best way to describe dealer’s reaction to this capability. Converting hi-res photos to film and providing this finish to the product opens up a whole world of opportunity. The powder coat base and clear coat provides superior protection and with standard film over the top, you can create camouflage or stone backgrounds, anything you want for quick and immediate solutions. The cost is very competitive and turn-around time is very quick as we have brought all of the equipment in house.” Mike Beatty, MD of Pulse Cinemas, adds, “We were really impressed with the new product and the hydro dipping as well, it’s just such a cool

feature perfect for our industry. The whole team is looking forward to continuing our work with James Loudspeaker; it’s a brand that just keeps giving us and our dealers great concepts to sell to end users that they will love. We have big plans for this brand moving forward including huge benefits for the most supportive dealers which includes visiting company HQ in Minden, Nevada! So stay tuned for more big James Loudspeaker news!” Pulse Cinemas pulsecinemas.com

HOUZZ INSIDE

THERE’S INFO LOOSE ABOUT THIS HOUZZ Website, Houzz, which provides resources for home-owners looking to renovate has revealed the results of its latest survey. What is there of interest for installers? Renovation resource website, Houzz, carries out an annual survey into the habits of its renovators called the Houzz & Home UK survey which this year analysed the data from more than 7,500 respondents in the United Kingdom. We know at least a few EI readers are registered on the site, which provides contacts and resources for those looking for quality tradespeople and products when renovating their homes, so we thought there might be some interesting data within the survey. Headlines from the official press releases highlighted that kitchens, was one of the most popular rooms to renovate, growing by 11% in the past year to a median spend of £10,000. Median spend on bathroom renovations also grew by nine percent, to a median spend of £4,350 in 2018. Overall, the survey revealed that renovating activity remained strong through 2018 with more than half of homeowners on Houzz renovating (57%) an average of three rooms per project, at an overall median spend of £18,000. Baby Boomers (ages 55-74) and Gen Xers (ages 40-54) combined represent three quarters of the renovating activity (74%), at a median spend of £20,000 each. Similar to expectations from previous years, 46% of renovating homeowners planned to continue or begin renovations this year, with 42 and 29% of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, respectively, anticipating new projects. While improving the design and functionality of a home are the top priorities during renovations, two in five homeowners prioritise energy efficiency (40%), although this does not necessarily mean via technology as this category can also include replacing windows and insulation, for example. This is particularly important for Baby Boomers and Gen Xers when compared to Millennials (48 and 40% versus 29%, respectively).

28 OCTOBER 2019

So much for the general trends, but what about the technology side of things? well our friends at Houzz had a dig and provide a little more insight on that side of their visitor’s activity. One in eight homeowners prioritise ‘smart technology’ during home renovations (13%), purchasing products like home assistants, streaming media players and thermostats. Unsurprisingly, Millennials are more likely than Baby Boomers or Gen Xers to rank smart technology as a high priority (16% versus 13 and 11%, respectively), with more than a third of Millennials incorporating home assistants (37%), compared with one in five Baby Boomers (23%).

HOMEOWNERS THAT RENOVATED IN 2018 TECHNOLOGY CHOICES Temperature controllers - 36% TVs (indoor) - 32% Home assistants (Alexa, Google, etc.) - 31% Speakers or sound system - 19% Security cameras - 14% Streaming media players - 12% Wireless doorbell cameras - 9% Home theatre system - 6% Garage door openers - 5%

The Houzz & Home UK survey for the last year yields some interesting results

Delving further into the data, the survey showed the percentage of respondents who had purchased specific product categories. As homeowners consider whether to renovate their current home or to purchase a new home, the top two considerations for renovating are to stay in their current home or area, outranking return on investment. Wanting to stay in the current home is the biggest decision driver for Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, whereas Millennials (ages 25 to 39) chose to stay in their current home and renovate because it was more affordable than moving. The desire to remain in the home longer, could be an interesting driver as automation increases its presence and abilities in the assisted living sector. The survey also revealed that the majority of renovating homeowners pay for renovating using cash from savings (80%), followed at a distance by credit cards, excluding store-specific credit cards (18%), and cash from a previous home sale (16%). Interestingly, reliance on credit cards is higher in Millennials than in older generations. Nine in 10 renovating homeowners hired a professional in 2018 (92%), with electricians, plumbers and carpet and flooring pros in greatest demand (61, 54 and 44%, respectively). While Millennials are more likely to hire professional help than Baby Boomers (93 versus 91%, respectively), the gap is perhaps surprisingly narrow. The Houzz & Home Survey was sent to registered users of Houzz UK and fielded in April 2019. Houzz www.houzz.co.uk

LISTEN UP HOMEE! EI was delighted to be invited to be one of the judges in a new blind testing initiative from installer Facebook group, Smart Homee. The day delivered a shoot-out between a choice of sub £400 6.5in in-ceiling speaker designs with some interesting results. Organised by Ben Davies, Smart Homee group founder and co-founder of Inspire AV, and hosted by Giff and Melanie Malcolm at the wonderful Bespoke Home Cinema HQ in Leeds, the event was a highly enjoyable experience and a real ‘ear opener’ too. Ben explains, “The concept of the blind testing came to me in the way all good ideas do ‘while drinking, speaking to my industry friends’, after all of us competed and tussled in the conversation to work out who was using the best brand of speakers. One thing was apparent, that all of us had never tested multiple brands in the same location using the same source. Then we realised it had never been done! So, the concept of ‘Integrators Choice Awards’ came about; we think the only product awards tested by custom installers for custom installers. “For fairness, I stepped back from the actual testing and invited some of my peers to help out with this very subjective test. The one thing I (as Inspire AV) would say, is that it makes you reflect on some of the other brands either you never got round to listening to or haven’t in a while. “We also have to say a huge thank you to Meridian for the loan of their exquisite Media Streamer, the 251 (partnering the Roon platform) and to Bespoke Home Cinemas for hosting the event and letting me cut holes in Giff’s ceiling! We will be doing more of these in the future with the next event to be confirmed for before Christmas.”

Also present as judges along with EI with their ears pinned back where; Tony Reader, AER Electrical, Roddy Abbott, Cinema Build Systems, Cristian Pote, Potes Smart Homes, Carlton Preston, Preston Electrical and Lousie Tarling Electrical of Tarling Electrical. One of the day’s judges, Tony explains, “Having been actively involved in the Smart Homee group since almost the beginning, when Ben offered me a judging spot, I jumped at the chance as I’ve always been a huge fan of audio and with moving my business more into the smart home side, hearing all these brands in one sitting was a unique opportunity. “The test consisted of 13 sets of speakers to listen to, each of which played the three different songs at the same volume each time. I don’t know if you have tried this as an installer, but it is amazingly hard work! “We listened to all speakers blind (not knowing which brand had been installed) while doing this. While all speakers performed well, there was definitely a speaker that made everyone smile and nod to each other as you do when you all agree on a certain situation. We were blown away by the result in the end as we had all emphatically voted for the same speaker. So to me, this just proved that margins are not always best, what’s best is what makes your client happy.” EI would have to concur and say this process is hard and takes real concentration. We are all used to listening to speakers on their own and working out if we like them or not, but compare and contrast? That’s a different process. However, after a few warm ups and some back and forth on agreeing which tracks would be best to use, the testers ‘got their ears in’ and the test proper was conducted by a fully engaged and focused group.

AND THE WINNER IS!

Wining the Best Build and Installation Award was the TDG Audio NFC-61. A fitting tribute as the company’s own website states that the goal for this product was ‘to create the finest architectural speakers available’. So, at least on this occasion, you could argue goal reached. This is a brand that has enough confidence in its products to offer a lifetime warranty on the NFC-61. Hitting the heights on the judges’ score cards and deemed the best ‘Bang for Buck’ on the day was the Focal 100ICW6 (£276.38) and special mention, was a speaker none of the group had encountered before, the OSD ACE600 (£166.66). The scores were created by combing the listening and the installation and build results, minus the cost of the unit, to give a combined score. The Focal really delivered on the quality of sound, but perhaps what pushed it into top spot for this category was the value for money with its sub £300 price tag. The surprise package was the ACE600, a strong performer with a low price. Another take away, for EI at least, was the highstandard all round. Conduct this test a few years back and perhaps there would have been at least a couple that under performed, but standards for installed speakers have risen in recent times, so whatever your or your customer’s taste, you should be able to find something that sets feet tapping and heads a-nodding. However, the biggest winner of the day picking up the Best Overall Speaker prize was the Klipsh DS160s (£349.98). After nearly a whole day of testing, the Klipsch was successfully picked by all judges as the best. The DS160s scored the highest results across the board and it seemed to be almost the only speaker to handle all three tracks equally well.

ARCHITECTURAL SPEAKERS

“My response, when they see my eyes flicking up to the heavens for salvation, is to ask them to close their eyes and see if they can imagine a real band or orchestra playing in front of them.”

GOING, GOING, BUT NOT QUITE GONE Paul Kasler, MD of install company, The Pleasure Home and LEARS International, distributor for Morel, bFly Audio and LuxuryMounts, gives his opinion on the present and future of the architectural speaker. On first sight, it appears that architectural speakers will disappear from view completely. Certainly, the quality of plaster-over speakers has improved over the past five years, but the hassle of plastering up to and over the speaker with the right thickness of plaster hasn’t gone away - or the lurking, nightmare scenario if they should fail. Unless the customer insists on totally hiding the

speaker, this is not my preferred CI solution. In-wall and in-ceiling sound quality has definitely improved over the past decade. At last, we have tilting tweeters to point the treble at the listener. Neodymium magnets together with hybrid carbon fibre and foam cores have increased the ability to rapidly start and stop the drive units. However, the bass has never really been there from an integrated in-ceiling or in-wall unit - not the tight, low distortion bass you get from a traditional, solid braced, cabinet speaker. Yes, there are dedicated passive in-wall subwoofers with fancy ducting systems and small, low level grilles, but again, do we want the installation

Studio series

hassle? Do we actually need to install a sub 100Hz subwoofer in the wall when we are told that the location of low end bass is not discernible by the listener. If we can stick a traditional active wireless subwoofer behind the sofa, or better still a pair for more uniform bass distribution, isn’t that both a better quality, lower cost and simpler install solution? All the major subwoofer vendors now also seem to offer a wireless option and the lag issue seems to have now been solved by faster electronics and improved Wi-Fi reception. We have all seen those horrible, small cube speakers mounted high up on the corners of walls to achieve a ‘surround sound solution’.

These are coupled with a hidden ‘subwoofer’ typically enclosed within an insufficiently ventilated cupboard. They achieve a ‘pasteurised cheese’ solution to my ears. I have no idea what adjustments have been made to their frequency response, but the general public seem to love them. My response to this, when they see my eyes flicking up to the heavens for salvation, is to ask them to close their eyes and see if they can imagine a real band or orchestra playing in front of them. Their answer is consistently ‘no!’. However, some of the best sounds are achieved by small speakers, when judiciously combined with the right subwoofer with a frequency response extending up to 150Hz. I still remember a pair of bookshelf Acoustic Energy AE1’s mounted on solid stands, combined with an REL Subwoofer - small speakers are nimble on their feet - fast, dynamic and great with voices, but obviously don’t have any real bass extension on their own. My modern-day favourite is the Octave 6 Limited Edition bookshelf speaker, which has considerably better bass extension and power handling than the AE1’s, but with the same beautiful, low distortion rendition of vocals and handling of dynamics. It is the speaker of choice in the home of the founder of Morel speakers what more can I say!

WHAT IS THE IDEAL IN WALL SPEAKER SYSTEM?

Unobtrusive, high quality sound is now achievable for everyday stereo sound. Using the latest Neodymium magnets, hybrid carbon fibre/ foam core drive units and innovative design in a coaxial arrangement - 40mm thick, 200mm diameter, frameless, paint over, easy to fit, inwall and in-ceiling speakers are now available in the UK. Coaxial arrangements of woofer and tweeter seem to offer the best phase alignment and therefore timing - encouraging foot tapping! Combine this with a suitable floor standing subwoofer and you have a nice surround sound solution for the small room. Five such speakers would cost the dealer about £1,000. Where there is no cavity space available, or where the speakers are a late afterthought, there is an elegant high-quality solution using sealed satellite speakers for wall or ceiling mounting. These typically also feature concentric driver

units, the best of which are extremely well built, sound superb and have incredibly good power handling. The ‘cop out’ alternative to the above solutions and sadly a low margin alternative for the custom installer, is to go along with the Sonos solution. It’s actually rather good, given the price and convenience, but there’s not a lot of money in it. It’s like what the iPad did five plus years ago for the home automation control market, setting customers’ expectations at £299 for a handheld controller, in the case of the Sonos One it’s just £199. As the ‘multi-room audio’ and ‘TV room’ sectors become more saturated, most installers yearn for the lucrative high-end home cinema opportunities. For the larger cinema room and the higher budget there are a variety of solutions, greatly assisted by the trend of acoustically transparent projection screens, enabling the front speakers to be hidden behind the fabric and most importantly positioned in the perfect position along the centre line of the screen. Personally, I would use Hi-Fi speakers for the LCR positions if space permitted and in-wall and in-ceiling speakers elsewhere. In the past five years, film studios have paid much greater attention to the quality of audio, which has been further enhanced by Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D - nicely encompassed by the catchy phrase 3D Audio. I’m still not convinced that you should keep to the same brand of speaker all the way round. Depth constraints may limit your choice of speaker and certainly you can get away with lesser speakers for the ceiling speaker(s) and the rear surrounds. I recently read an article on studio mixing to support this statement, ‘We simply don’t hear things above us, behind us, or off to the sides nearly as well as we discern sound coming from directly in front’. As a result, a ‘flyover’ from front to back (or diagonally – say, from front left to rear right) just gives a hazy impression of motion, with a big hole in the middle where the greatest phase cancellations occur. Ditto for circular movements: they don’t sound anything like circles, just a vague (and oddly disconcerting) shifting of the signal from one spot (sort of) to another spot (sort of).

THE REAL WORLD

Sadly, your average customer, irrespective of their income, has not had the opportunity to hear and most importantly appreciate quality sound. The eyes seem to take priority over the ears, not helped by the poor audio experience in most live events, other than in properly acoustically treated concert halls. I cannot think of a single wedding I have attended where the sound quality was even ‘acceptable’. In some cases they’ve spent £20,000+ on a band whilst the sound system maybe cost well under £5,000 to buy outright. Expectation levels are not high. With the trend for distributors to now offer state of the art rooms, maybe at last there is an opportunity to really educate the customer on what can now be achieved.

The often poor sound at live events does nothing to create desire for better audio at home

SPEAKERS: SHOWCASE

THE ART OF CINEMA AND AV EI presents just a few of the products highlights and news from the speaker category. A well-designed, well-specified cinema can be a truly magical experience. Designing a cinema is technically challenging, with every design decision having an impact on other factors. Seating position, screen size, image brightness, loudspeaker positioning and dynamic range are just some of the key considerations for the design and installation teams. By Dolby Atmos standards, a cinema should be able to achieve at least 105 db from each speaker in the listening position. If the speaker is not capable of this, a huge part of the excitement and dynamic range will be missing from the performance. While industry standards give the ideal parameters to aim for, specifying the right speakers will guarantee the very best performance. Artcoustic speakers are used throughout in a recent Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 system, with Spitfire 126s used for the LCR, Spitfire 4-2s for the side and rears, and Architect SL 4-2s overhead. Two Control 2 subwoofers finish this system. The result, says the maker, is a technically excellent installation, with a striking design and amazing performance. Other kit in the room includes a Sony VPLVW570ES projector, 2.35:1 DT Contempo screen, Kaleidoscape Strato, Anthem MRX1120 all bought together by Control4. Artcoustic says it has been designing groundbreaking loudspeakers since 1998, constantly looking to push the limits of convention and challenging the status quo. The maker argues the award-winning collection of speakers perform amongst the highest in their class, delivering exceptional efficiency, dynamics and high quality sound offering complete design freedom,

through their customised design options. As a result, Artcoustic has become a widely-respected loudspeaker brand for music and cinema systems. Like many projects featuring Artcoustic speakers, the full service was utilised with initial system design, technical designs, 3D visual renders and system calibration. Artcousitc sent its congratulations to Angus, Kevin, Gavin and the whole team at New Wave AV for this impressive project. Latest innovations wise, Habitech’s Giovanni Scatola, says, “Ironically the key stand-out speaker innovations are the ones that are most successful at hiding the speakers. Long gone are the days when a large floor-stander was a symbol of status. Today the ‘wow factor’ at the dinner party belongs to speakers you cannot see at all. When it comes to invisible speakers, some integrators and their customers worry about sound being compromised by a thin layer of plaster, but the technology behind the best invisibles is smart enough to reproduce astonishing full range detail and intelligibility at every demo. With this calibre of performance, particularly in two-channel applications, established class leaders like the Sonance IS4 family of invisible speakers and woofers will always steal the bragging rights.” Asked to pick some current range highlights, Meridian Audio, highlights the company’s CEDIA Award winning DSP520.2 and DSP640.2 InWall Loudspeakers. The DSP640.2 In-Wall Loudspeaker features eight power amplifiers, delivering 100W per drive unit and L+R mode for high-power soundbar applications. It can deliver over 105dB over 4m, providing full range sound with bass extension down to 40Hz, together with Meridian’s on-board Enhanced Bass Alignment (EBA) which aligns the high, mid, and upper bass frequencies for added clarity.

The DSP520.2 In-Wall Loudspeaker has many similar qualities to the DSP640.2, but this model boasts an all-new quad-amp DSP design with four powerful amplifiers, delivering 100W per drive unit. L+R mode technology has been integrated to ensure that the true reproduction of all audio is present when a single loudspeaker is used on its own, whilst delivering bass extension down to 50Hz for full range sound. Taking on a similar task, AWE picks out the KF92 a twin 9in driver ‘force-cancelling’ subwoofer that’s a brand new addition to the KEF range. This compact, room-friendly subwoofer is engineered to deepen every listening experience. The two 9in drivers are powered by a 1000W of power and optimised with KEF’s Music Integrity Engine, and AWE says the KF92 is capable of delivering astonishing levels of deep and controlled bass for media room and home cinema applications. Distributor Alltrade highlights the addition of Optimal Speaker Design loudspeakers to its portfolio of CI brands and products. OSD is a US brand offering strong value and high performance across in-wall, in-ceiling and IP-rated outdoor loudspeakers including rock shaped designs to blend into outdoor living spaces. Leveraging the brand’s US-success, economies of scale allow OSD to offer high-performance, great looking loudspeakers at exceptionally keen price points to deliver best in class value for installers. Available through Alltrade on-line or at any one of its six trade counters across the south of the UK, the OSD in-ceiling line-up spans 6.5in and 8in models, ranged to offer installers and their customers a straightforward good, better, best trade-up route. PMC NEWS

PMC AND MARTIN LOGAN JOIN FORCES PMC recently announced it has become the distributor for the prestigious US brand of loudspeakers, Martin Logan. EI caught up with PMC Distribution UK’s divisional director, Ian Sutton, to find out more.

Can you explain the thinking behind one speaker company taking on another speaker company’s products to distribute? We knew it would raise a few eyebrows! But when you think about it, PMC has been distributing third party products in the UK for over 25 years, ever since we brought the Canadian electronics brand Bryston to the UK. And in 2017 we AVM to the stable, plus we developed our own Hi-Fi amplifier, the Cor, the same year. None of these products compete with each other and the same is true of Martin Logan.

Can you explain where Martin Logan fits in to the range and the new structure of the company? The changing market in the UK, and move towards high-end custom installations, meant we needed to expand our offering in this sector. Martin Logan has a very strong and extensive range of lifestyle, active subwoofers and installation speakers and is the perfect fit with our other brands. This expansion of our product portfolio, across loudspeakers and amplifiers, plus the distribution of Bryston and AVM, has necessitated a separation of the PMC manufacturing and sales divisions in the UK. For that reason, we created PMC Distribution UK. It enables us to maintain and expand the focus on our home market, meeting the specific needs of the retail and installation sectors through the infrastructure of a dedicated distribution business, while letting PMC manufacturing do what it does best.

Tell us more about the Martin Logan range. The Masterpiece series electrostatic loudspeakers are the iconic products that are closely associated with Martin Logan and until now that’s all the UK market has really been exposed to. They are the perfect complement to our ATL speakers, as both share a beautifully open and detailed midrange, but take a different approach to speaker design and therefore appeal to different audiences. Products new to the UK include the new improved Motion Series – a range of more traditional looking cabinet speakers, which share the DNA of Martin Logan’s electrostatic loudspeakers. The secret lies in the fast-transient response and distortion free output from their Folded Motion tweeters. The comprehensive range of Martin Logan in-wall, on-wall and in-ceiling speakers will be the perfect complement in this burgeoning sector. What Martin Logan has done is take that electrostatic DNA and incorporate it into discreet products. Many of the models feature the Folded Motion Tweeters from the Motion Series and even the entry level Installer Series is designed with the same meticulous attention to detail.

And what about subwoofers and lifestyle? Yes, it is and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to take on the brand. With so many different ranges, all sharing the same philosophy and complementing the PMC offering, we are able to service every sector of the UK market. The BalancedForce subwoofers are fantastic. They have the speed of delivery and accuracy to match the sound of the big electrostatic panels and feature ARC room optimisation technology. The lifestyle speakers include a selection of powered and passive soundbars, and the SLM

models which are very slimline on-wall versions of the Motion Series that work perfectly alongside flat panel TVs.

What about the company, how big is it, where do they manufacture? Manufacturing takes place in Canada at a huge facility in Mississauga, Toronto. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of electrostatic panels and exports to over 50 countries around the world. I think people don’t realise just how big a company it is, as we’ve only been exposed to the flagship products in the UK.

How will you be introducing the brand to the UK? PMC Distribution UK will start by implementing a three-stage introduction programme. Firstly, by strengthening the presence of the flagship Masterpiece series electrostatic loudspeakers, through careful evaluation and fine tuning of the existing sales channels. New dealers will be appointed, and some existing dealer contracts will be reviewed. Then we will turn our attention to the Motion Series, which opens up the possibility of wider availability for the Martin Logan brand through retailers that wouldn’t necessarily feature the Masterpiece range. The third stage will see us bring in the custom installation, SLM lifestyle models and the BalancedForce subwoofers.

Who will be looking after the dealers and installers for the brand? The PMC Distribution UK business is headed by me, with the familiar faces of Tom Barron and Craig Sowerby servicing the retail accounts. Craig has particular knowledge of the installation sector and Karen King in the sales office will act as a single point of contact at head office.

INSTALL PIONEERS: TOTALLY TOTEM

TOTALLY TOTEM Totem Acoustics was established in 1987 by company president and chief engineer, Vince Bruzzese. To this day, Vince is the inspiration behind everything the brand does and strives to achieve. In this interview, we find out just what drives Vince to keep innovating and what makes Totem so special.

TELL US HOW YOU FIRST GOT THE IDEA TO START TOTEM, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE EARLY PRODUCTS LIKE THE MODEL ONE? I was a consummate music listener and of the expensive and supposedly great speakers available to me in the 70s and 80s, I found that what I had invested in was not what they were purported to be. Reading reviews and bathing in fantasy did not translate into a worthwhile experience or even short-term satisfaction. Most speakers either changed characteristics after a short time or became disappointing after some use. Multiple flaws became evident and persistently obliterated the magic that I tried to reconfigure. Perfecting and modifying the tube electronics to compensate for these deficiencies was a losing battle. Having observed, dissected and seen the issues, I decided to undertake the task of building for myself something that would be relevant to my desire for long term image stability based on differing principles from the norm. By the mid-80s speakers were fairly large, speed quotient was slow and imaging more imaginary than real. I wanted a speaker that would exhibit the best traits and speed of say a Quad ESL 57, but without the narrow listening window, with all the intensity and feeling intact. Speed and imaging and quasi-full extension is primordial, it’s something the human brain is attuned to enjoy. Most important was the transmission of the ‘complete’ musical message with spatial cues, extended harmonics and an encompassing envelope. All this I wanted to duplicate, but from a smaller platform that inherently had advantages over larger units. The trick was doing this in a small enclosure that could deliver all of these prerequisites and maintain dynamic excellence.

WHAT IS THE ‘TOTEM SOUND’? The Totem sound is very clear, non vague nor fatiguing and effusively spacious, offering a naturally distributed envelope of sound that is phase perfect anywhere in the room. It retains the meaning of the musical composition with all its purpose, inflection, harmonics, emotion and bandwidth. From the smallest whispers to the most startling dynamics, all sounds exist in their own space and radiate in correct composure across the soundscape and listening area.

INSTALL PIONEERS: TOTALLY TOTEM

THE CANADIAN FACTORY WHERE THE PRODUCTS ARE MADE IS VERY SPECIAL, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT? When we designed Totem’s main headquarters and assembly area over 22 years ago, we wanted it to be timeless and striking, but bathed in its own sense of purpose, endeavouring to create a space that was not only functional but calming, inspiring and motivational. We practically live in it as our hours can be long. We are quite good at design, so the external structure is rather unique, while the internal office space is extremely welcoming and large. There are also assembly areas and a rooftop hexagonal cupola. The lobby is inviting but deserted of humankind. Black inky granite is bathed in light by a whole window wall. Off to the left, an authentic 11ft tall Totem pole stands silently greeting. Go up our sweeping 27ft suspended staircase to the upper office area and you’ll see Native American and other artwork intermeshed with hundreds of LPs intermixed in a modern layout. Both a myriad of new and vintage electronics are displayed throughout our building. Importantly, these are used to balance, counter-measure and compare in judging the speakers. There are tens of thousands of different capacitors, multiple resistor types and magnetic material free air core coils that form a foundation of some of the passive crossover part selection. We have the largest variety and pool source of these anywhere in the world. Rolls upon rolls of specially configured and fabricated wiring for the internals (over 100). Everything that is needed for me to expose the inner truth of any design is here. Over the years, we haven’t changed our formulation on how a speaker is developed. First, practicality is thrown out and symbiotic/ synergistic/extremely musical relationships are sought through the aforementioned parts. By means of our own computational tables and unique driver development, including our revolutionary Torrent technology, we believe we are on the cutting edge of superb off-axis sound dispersal and favourable natural responses, all from minimally small enclosures.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS HAVE JUST BEEN INTRODUCED INTO THE UK VIA REDLINE, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM? We’ve been building architectural speakers for over 15 years. We apply the same exacting trial and experimentation procedure relative in all our models. To understand what is unique about the advantages of our architectural solutions, one has to understand how sound propagates from the Totem speakers. One also must understand that we are masters of a very open, phase coherent and dynamic sound from small enclosures. From the original Model One to the recently released Tribe Tower, we produce gigantic, musical and coherent imaging from extremely small enclosures. We also normally show our in-room products with no toe-in. Our competitors have beaming type speaker systems whose listening window is much more directional, hence they have to be angled in towards the listener. Yet, even then the listening window is narrow.

OCTOBER 2019 41

INSTALL PIONEERS: TOTALLY TOTEM

We normally don’t toe-in our in-room speakers at all and our listening window is wide and expansive, natural and non disturbing. Most architectural products are positioned forward facing or downward facing, lying flat against a surface in a minimally small enclosure. To most manufacturers these factors are a hindrance to their sound, to Totem it is our absolute forte.

CAN YOU SUM UP WHY AN INSTALLER WOULD WANT TO USE TOTEM? Installers want ease of installation and bullet proof, intelligent and flexible designs for all conditions as well as stages of performance that they can offer. We deliver on-wall and in-wall/in-ceiling highperformance designs in various stages that can rival and surpass anything else. We also have the slimmest in-room and in-wall high performance subs. Installers wish to offer something that the majority of installers cannot, distinguishing themselves by delivering superior sound. Mediocrity is rampant and Totem products are contrary to this, producing a seamless sound integration and sound envelope that defies description. All of our

42 OCTOBER 2019

architectural models can be matched successfully with each other too.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE ARCHITECTURAL RANGE? With the recently introduced Kin Play active and wireless stereo speakers, and the resultant ‘Best Of’ awards given to this pair of modestly priced all in one systems, we will expand this into a smaller version called Kin Play Mini. All of these have superb Bluetooth APTX hi-def streaming, digital connectivity to cable boxes, a great phono section and wonderful amplification. Later in 2019, we will also have a high-performance active ‘soundbar’. Also in development, is a Torrent Technology passive high-end three channel unit. This last one involves a subtle size and weight reduction in the formidable Torrent Technology 4in driver. A standalone Kin amplifier with the same functions as the Kin Play and Kin Play Mini will accompany the Kin Play Mini in the official September introduction. In addition, further in-room, Tribe Monitor and a larger format Tribe Tower, all with newly designed Torrent Drivers, are in development and expected sometime early in 2020. High end, higher performance, super compact

Torrent Technology units are also being developed for new highest performance in-walls and in-ceilings. More news in the near future on these!

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT RUNNING TOTEM? Thirty-two years of continued commitment and innovation have allowed the company to project itself dynamically and successfully into this everchanging milieu. Lucy Lentini, our VP and Director has run the business and sales aspect and I am left to head the development aspect in all quietude and concentration. Revolutionary Totem Torrent Technology continues to evolve and be ameliorated in every sense. Listen to a pair of Tribe Towers and see the potential, now and in the future. Totem offers stability and performance in equal measure to retailers and installers who want continuity, service, personal contact, a dedicated distribution system and a guaranteed uniqueness. TOUCH-SCREENS, INTERFACES AND PROGRAMMING

BESPOKE PROGRAMMING IN A PLUG AND PRAY WORLD Experienced Crestron Certified Master Programmer and CI veteran, Cliff Stammers takes a look at the changing face of programming within the home automation universe. There can be little doubt that programming, as a service industry is constantly reinventing itself. But is it changing? Looking back, it becomes clear that change and adaptation are inherent qualities of writing code and they are in fact a part of the very essence of what programming, particularly as a service commodity, is actually all about. In short, change and reinvention is a part of the DNA of service programming and, therefore, of service providers as well. And speaking as one who has been nimble enough to have been offering software as a service for over twenty years, I can tell you straight off that if we don’t adapt, we won’t survive. The good news about this is that, providing one keeps one’s eye on the surf, this wave of continual adaptation is a fairly simple one to ride. You see, most change is reactive. It is industry led. Rarely, if ever, do any of us software providers adopt a practice, or create a product that has any meaningful impact on the way our services are offered to the industry as a whole. Subsequently, the way we adapt is driven by general trends, and this is dictated largely by the kinds of products that are being specified – and these are decisions largely made by system designers, project managers and consultants. So, it follows that predicting the route that technology is taking is quite simply a case of remaining aware of industry trends and talking to the people that matter and this is, on the whole, done by remaining well conversant with general product development. Keep reading EI people! It’s where the future comes from! OK, so EI posed a couple of very decent questions as the premise for this article. And they are: How has programming evolved in recent years? And how relevant is today’s programmer in the world of plug and play products?

46 OCTOBER 2019

To my mind programming has evolved enormously. And I don’t just mean AV programming, or CI service programming. I mean that technology generally has evolved over time and with it, of course, the software that drives it has evolved accordingly. Naturally, the CI game has been somewhere near the very centre of this whirlwind of change, so us lucky people have been witness, first-hand, to the depth and brevity of these developments. One undoubted development has been towards the adoption of products that ‘don’t require any programming’. These are products that we refer to as ‘plug and play.’ But is this a reality, or simply just a marketing angle? Well, in my opinion no, it’s not just all about marketing. I think even the most hardened cynic would have to concede that there’s more to plug and play than just spin and hype. But whilst it’s certainly true that the out-of-the-box intelligence that can be found in a product these days is generally very impressive, there is still some way to go before any generic code can truly, fully deliver a consistently excellent user experience. And that’s not to denigrate the efforts manufacturers are putting into developing their software logic sets, because on the whole they’re doing a very solid job of it, but it is a reminder that the great utopia of intelligent, self-configuring software isn’t quite there yet. It is definitely true that a product with onboard software clearly doesn’t need to have that software written for it. That’s obvious. But someone, somewhere will need to configure that software correctly. And to do that, they’ll need a firm understanding of the role of these products in any given system design. That’s why, about eight years ago, Crestron ditched their Independent Programmers scheme (CAIP) in favour of the softer, more inclusive CSP scheme – Crestron Service Providers. And therein lies the thrust of one of the more significant developments

TOUCH-SCREENS, INTERFACES AND PROGRAMMING

IS IMAGE EVERYTHING?

Programmers must learn to ride the wave of technology transition

in our industry in recent years, one that has passed by virtually unnoticed. The move from ‘Programming’ to ‘Provider’ reflects the shifting roles and challenges that service providers need to address. In other words, programmers are still necessary, but not necessarily for programming! OK. So, who are these service providers? What are they all about? And how relevant are they in the current market? To answer that question, let me rephrase it slightly: how are programming service providers, of which I am one, regarded by the industry? Well, I’d suggest that it’s not so much a question of how much or how little relevant we are, it’s more about how we are perceived that determines if we are relevant or not.

I’m the first to acknowledge that programmers have always garnered a fairly hostile image and have consistently been viewed with disdain by much of the industry. I’m not entirely clear why this is, but I do accept that this borderline hostility regarding programmers is not without foundation. I’m not overstating it when I say that I first detected a hint of this in the air at the very first project I ever programmed back in 1999. And in all the time since it’s never really gone away. So, in that respect, no: nothing has changed whatsoever. Except that maybe this intolerance towards programming has become more prevalent, and more pronounced. But is this because our role in a project is still as vital as it was twenty years ago? I suspect it is. You see, software service providers have a view on a project that is often quite angular. We always view a project from the ‘end in’. What I mean by that is, we view every job we enter into from the point of view of completion. And then we work backwards to the beginning. And only then can we sit down and begin our code. It’s like this article I’m sitting here and writing now: I need to know how it ends, before I can understand how to start it. Programming, in that respect, is the same today as it was two decades ago. A lot of the

approaches and practices have altered and been adjusted, but the fundamental objectives, and how to achieve them, have remained the same. If anything, the timescales are different now and project gestation periods are being truncated more than ever before. The world is speeding up. The end user is generally less tolerant of delays, probably due largely to the proliferation of commercial constraints and penalty clauses in our rabidly litigious world. Many projects are being sold at a loss, on the promise of more to come, and budgets, subsequently, are tighter than ever before. It’s definitely not easy out there. And it is this dynamic that has, in my opinion, altered our day to day professional lives more dramatically than anything that the development of products has brought to bear. Programmers are becoming providers. Code is becoming commissioning. And patience and tolerance, has all but disappeared. That, to my mind, is the biggest change that we’ve seen in, not just our industry, but in all of society over the last twenty years. Get ready people, because it’s only going to accelerate from here on in. Cliff Stammers, Clever Rooms www.cleverrooms.co.uk

ESSENTIAL CEDIA

FUNDAMENTALS OF THE NETWORK Nicolai Landschultz, Managing Director at install company and CEDIA Member, Indigozest, looks at the state of play concerning networks. On a very basic level networking is everything that we do to distribute data packets around the property as well as to and from the internet. This includes wired and wireless networks, but it’s also the other types of networks that we don’t necessarily think about in the same way, such as, Zigbee, Bluetooth and Z-wave. Almost every smart home device requires some form of data network. There are a few exceptions where we would use serial connections or infrared signals, but the norm is very much on data networks. TVs are seemingly one of the last bastions of devices getting IP control over the past couple of years. It’s not yet ubiquitous, but a growing number of manufacturers now support it. Without a good network in place, the fact is that you’re unlikely to get a smart home that works consistently. The data network infrastructure comprises cabling, switches, routers, firewalls, access points, and the equipment that, ultimately, connects to it. It’s absolutely key that you choose equipment that works solidly and performs consistently, just like you would for the control system, sound system, etc. On that note, we never find that the stability of the ISP provided router is particularly good, neither is the Wi-Fi coverage nor at a basic level will the number of ports be anywhere near sufficient. That’s why it is one of the first pieces of kit to consider replacing when designing your customer’s network. And, it becomes a clear area where your expertise can be communicated to the customer and will add value. To ensure a solid networked infrastructure, good Wi-Fi coverage is a fundamental. As with almost any design, don’t just cater for the here and now, but ensure there is some element of future proofing built in. Also, make sure you plan for more than just sufficient data cables so that there is room for future coverage. As a minimum, you should adhere to

CEDIA’s wiring guidelines. One of the most common questions that we get from clients is why can’t everything be done over wireless? Well, plenty can be achieved with wireless, of course. However, even in a wireless-only install, we still need to have a number of hard-wired access points to ensure coverage. This takes us back to having a networked infrastructure. Yes, you could start using mesh-based Wi-Fi but now you have additional latency to consider, and, in any case, these access points need power so there is still some form of cable to consider. With Wi-Fi, you must be careful to plan your channels to make sure that they don’t overlap and to safeguard against any clashes with Bluetooth and Zigbee which happens to work at 2.4GHz as well. Also, depending on the property you are working with you may have to take into consideration the neighbours’ Wi-Fi as well, since their wireless signals may interfere with yours. Getting these basics right – and getting properly trained so that you understand networks - will solve so many issues on a site and make the project run much more smoothly for you and your customer. There’s also the future to consider. We know that there is going to be a requirement for increased data transmission at faster speeds. We are going to have more and more wireless sensors (temperature, light, clothing, smells, CO, CO2, air quality) and all these will require data transmission, almost certainly over wireless which will create the potential for even more wireless congestion. The introduction of 5G will also likely have a significant impact. It is so fast that it will inevitably compete with traditional broadband speeds. Can we envisage a future where we didn’t build much of a network, where everything is 5G? Maybe only doing the fastest of fast video signals down a cable? It’s possible – and that’s why getting to grips with networks is a priority for every integrator. Indigozest www.indigozest.co.uk

THE BEST OF HOME AUTOMATION AND VIDEO DOORBELLS Control4 showcases the abilities of its smart doorbell offering. Not all video doorbells are created equal, argues Control4. Why settle for simply answering a ring with a video call when your smart home customers could also take action? With Intercom Anywhere, Control4 says smart home professionals can program comprehensive home automation scenes that can be seamlessly initiated by users within the Intercom Anywhere app. Whether at home or abroad, Control4 Smart Homeowners can do more than answer calls from their doorbells. They can also control door locks, security systems, or lighting all from the same application. Control4 adds that the dedicated Intercom Anywhere app is fast and quickly notifies the

homeowner’s mobile device or in-home touch screens when someone rings their Control4 DS2 Door Station or other supported third-party door stations from companies like 2N, Comelit, and Akuvox. In addition to receiving calls from the front door, Intercom Anywhere also enables room-to-

room or mobile-to-room intercom communication via touch screens and mobile devices so even if the kids aren’t answering their phones, parents can drop-in to any room to see and hear what is going on at home. And now with the most recent update to Control4 Smart Home OS 3, Intercom Anywhere can be used in multi-dwelling units (MDUs) such as office buildings or condominiums with concierge desks. There’s no need for a dedicated communications server, just use a Control4 EA-5 or CA-10 controller to direct automation and communication in MDU residences and common spaces. DAY IN THE LIFE: TATESIDE

THE ART OF INSTALL EI met with Jack Cornish, Technical Director at Tateside and discovered a London based installer which has built an enviable client list, reputation for inventiveness and flexibility as well as a very strong customer care record. Created in 2008 and originally situated right next to London’s iconic Tate Modern building (hence the name) the company was founded on servicing the needs of the Time Inc. organisation; meetings rooms, data structure and so forth. The company was founded by three directors Andy Sullivan, Richard Day and Graham Agambar with Jack joining in 2012 as Technical Director. Jack explains, “I came on board to help grow the business with a varied background including as a trained classical musician and with experience of building music studios in schools. As a company we rely on our strong relationships, varied backgrounds and inventiveness as a team to enable us to deliver to a really wide range of clients across the commercial, hospitality and residential sectors.” Developing the company beyond its support for the not inconsiderable needs of global publishing firm Time Inc.’s London operation, notable early clients included work for Gordan Ramsey Group restaurant chain which required full commercial audio systems, RTI control and custom made GUIs. Jack explains that lots of the company’s success has been based on delivering for existing clients and letting world of mouth do the rest, recommendation has been a huge driver.

The company is also not scared to go looking either, early on winning residential work on the South Bank by noticing luxury flat developments near the company’s original home, finding who the key people were, and bidding for the work. Another relatively early client was the restaurant chain Wagamama, involving Bose commercial audio systems for 22 outlets. Jack says, “We were bought in by the guy who does the music licensing for the chain, the music in there is actually pretty well curated, so it was a good project to work on. Getting contracts like that really does have an effect in boosting confidence and has helped us not to be afraid of taking anything on, we know we can deliver, even when the pressure is on.” Jack explains, “A really strong aspect of what we offer is our ability to be on post in the heart of London at the drop of a hat. Lots of companies say they ‘cover’ London, but there is a big difference between that and being able to jump in an uber or on one of the great new Uber bikes and be on site in 20 minutes. Genuinely being on many of our client’s doorsteps is not just better for when the systems are going in, but for support as well. “We have created a system where with much of the testing and creation of the systems happening at company HQ, we can be really nimble getting around the city. We only actually have one commercial fully kitted out van. In London it is far better for our technicians to have kits they carry with them or drop off all that is needed at site when the job starts and use Uber to move around

the city; it’s cheaper, quicker and more efficient. “We had a situation recently where a client had a wedding in central London, there was an issue with the sound (not supplied by us), we got a portable Bose system to them in 25 minutes. People don’t forget stuff like that.” As the company expanded, Tateside moved to a new HQ in Great Suffolk Street, into an old factory site in what had been the artists’ quarter of this extremely up and coming area. This large space allowed the company to include a full home cinema room built around an Artcousitc system. Jack explains, “That was a really wicked space. It has parking too! Which in London is really rare. We had our cinema demo in there which was great and one plan was that we were really going to push cinema hard as one of our specialities. “However, over the years we have found that actually taking a more agnostic approach to what we do and letting the clients needs guide our work, rather than restricting ourselves to certain sectors, has allowed us to grow more effectively and the varied work that we do really means we can deliver any type of system needed.” Working with such a varied client group across residential and commercial has really paid off as complex relationships within those sectors have led to recommendations for some really strong projects.

DAY IN THE LIFE: TATESIDE

Clients include the Gordon Ramsey restaurant group and Selfridges

The company’s work with Soho House members club, through a series of intertwining relationships, led to work on a globally renowned sports personality’s Oxford barn conversion. Jack explains, after some pretty complex systems in other properties the client wanted a nice simple AV and control system, sympathetic to the building’s interior, which included line array speakers high up in the structure and a nice Origin Acoustics system outside too. Another job that is under way right now with a similar word of mouth birthing, is for the wife of a very well known record producer. Jack explains, “This job goes back a ways and involved a demo at our old space. The client loved the Artcousitc cinema so one of those is going in, but she has really eclectic taste in furniture and Soho House have had input in designing it, so it’s not going to look like your typical cinema - it’s going to be very cool though. In lots of our work, we try and remember that to the client the over all look of the room is probably going to be the most important thing for them. “Yes we fight our corner when something is really going to impact performance negatively, but we also see it as our job to come up with products or solutions that work around the client’s vision. “We have been asked for some really challenging things, such as a meeting room with invisible mics and no visible controls on view. Not having access to an invisible mic was of course a challenge, but requests like that are good because it really makes you think, how close can we get to that?

54 OCTOBER 2019

what can we come up with?” The company’s ability to react quickly and come up with inventive solutions is also key for other clients such as London’s famous retail giant Selfridges. Jack explains, “We do all of their back-room systems such as meeting rooms. It can be a real rabbit warren behind the scenes so can be quite challenging. We also built a really nice large video wall in the toy-department. But perhaps the most unusual thing we have built for them are screens for the security staff to check social media activity to see if there are issues relating to the store. “Panic was caused last year as singer Olly Murs tweeted that he had heard gun fire in the store. Now the Just Add Power system picks up on any social media activity about the store so staff can keep an eye on any potential problems.” This is another client which came about by recommendation. Jack explains, “A contact of ours who organises the match day media at Fulham FC passed on our details to someone he met in a café and several links down the chain later we are in Selfridges! It really does pay to look after people, no matter how big or small the job is, for us it always pays off.” Other current work involves the Soho Works space in White City, which has delivered some nice touches such as mounting cameras in the middle of Leon sound-bars in the huddle spaces for video comms functionality. This project has also not been without challenges. Modern systems are going to have to fit around the significant amount

of retro furniture recently bought back from a specialist in Amsterdam, but the look and feel of these spaces is one of its main USPs so it goes with the territory. The company does have an enviable knack of moving very easily from commercial, to hospitality to residential. Jack argues that these days quite a few of the systems and products, if not similar, are the same and if the approach of just listening to the client and delivering what they want is followed, the solutions, with some expertise, can be created. Not all the work comes from word of mouth of course, a DM from Twitter where a developer saw the company’s work and got in contact has led to some significant domestic projects up in Cambridgeshire. The company is fully aware of the potential power of social media and is keen to explore the opportunities created more in the future. Another area for expansion is in servicing and support, but it is not always easy. Jack explains, “We got a call from a major retailer once saying, ‘We have an important customer visiting and the audio is not working!’ We sorted the issue, but large retailers can be shy of maintenance contracts for AV and automation. Of course they have them on everything else like HVAC, but it’s more difficult to get them to agree to regular maintenance of AV. However, we are working on explaining the benefits.”

Tateside’s new HQ offers all sorts of new possibilities

CONTINUED EXPANSION

Despite really liking the space at Great Suffolk street, the expanding rent bill started to look a little high and the team decided the money could be invested better and so the new home (which the company owns) at 10 Dock Street in E1 was born. This impressive mix of work and demo space delivers the best of all worlds. Jack explains, “Projects can be long and challenging. Having space where we can build, pre-configure and thoroughly test before they ever go to site is invaluable. We also love the area it is in, it’s very cool. It delivers everything we need in terms of space and location. It has also allowed us to make more room for some of the brands we like to work with. We are the official demo space in London for Amina speakers. In our old space I think we had two Amina speakers, here we have

22! The relationship brings all sorts of key people into the building from the design community, so it works very well for us.” In fact on the day of EI’s visit the Amina demo was in full flow with Babs More, director at the company, putting the multi-faceted demo options through their paces for visiting parties. A few other key brands are Bose Professional, for reliability and performance and Martin Audio for the same reasons. Crestron is also a favourite and the company is keen to see what recently introduced Crestron Home can deliver. Jack observes, “I am not a graphic designer, but you have to say the new interfaces do look really cool. I have said for a while that the standard interfaces on control platforms could be better, and looks like Crestron have made the first move.”

So, with loads of impressive work already in the books and a fully loaded new HQ, Tateside is keen to keep growing. There are some big projects on the way that are under wraps for now and the expanding London MDU market is another obvious target for the company. With a varied skill set and impressive track record, who would bet against this highly approachable and capable team getting exactly what they wish for. Tateside www.tateside.com

CASE STUDY: AKTIVWORLD

WORLD-CLASS CINEMA Aktivworld created this cutting-edge basement home cinema that not only achieved, but exceeded the homeowner’s expectations with the help of KEF, Epson and Marantz all supplied via specialist distributor AWE.

UNDERSTANDING THE CLIENT’S VISION

Aktivworld is a home technology integration company established in 2016 and is run by Kevan Mcloughlin. Based in Worthing, West Sussex, Aktivworld is a CEDIA member and provides home technology services covering smart home solutions, multi-room AV, distributed music systems, home cinema, and home networking. Kevan says, “We pride ourselves on strong client relationships and attention to detail to deliver truly unique state-of-the-art installations. As each new project is unique in terms of requirements and budget, it is essential to understand the client’s vision of the completed project. To achieve this, the first thing is to listen to is the client and provide advice and information in plain English, not technical jargon, to help the client decide what’s right for their project.” Kevan adds, “We work closely with architects, interior designers, and building contractors to ensure that every installation works with the overall look and feel of the property. Every effort is made to ensure that we offer the very latest in available technologies. We work with a number of highquality suppliers within the home technology industry, to complete the project to the highest standards. All of this commitment to high-quality care, can be seen in abundance with this cinema project for this residential property in Esher, Surrey, that was undergoing major refurbishment, including the design and execution of a

58 OCTOBER 2019

brand-new dedicated home cinema in the existing under-used basement storage area. The install team were faced with an initial challenge to identify exactly what level of home cinema was required, resulting in a visit to the AWE showroom in Epsom so that the clients could experience a range of technologies and solutions for themselves. Following the demonstration, the homeowner opted for a large screen and projection system, alongside a high-performance audio system with a single point of control. With the level and quality of home cinema set up confirmed (Dolby Atmos 7.4.4 system with a fixed screen and a 16.9 ratio) Aktivworld specified a number of products that would deliver the performance the family wanted. For audio, Akitvworld installed three KEF Ci5160RL speakers for the LCR channels, two KEF Ci3160RL for left and right surround, two KEF Ci3160RL for rear surround channels, and four KEF CI200QR for the

CASE STUDY: AKTIVWORLD

A single point of control was important for the client

front and rear height channels. Akitvworld says the THX-certified full range speakers ensure quality sound is heard from any location in the cinema room no matter where the person is sitting thanks to enhanced dispersion characteristics much wider than in-wall speakers typically achieve. Given the nature of the basement construction and room size, Aktivworld installed the in-wall and in-ceiling speakers into custom-built sealed cabinets, made in accordance with the KEF optimum internal volume specifications for the best audio experience. The homeowner also specified that the speakers were hidden from view, so the walls were finished in acoustically transparent fabrics with a suede ceiling, as well as custompainted speaker grills.

The team also installed a Marantz AV8805 pre-amplifier, two Marantz MM8077 power amplifiers, and two KEF KASA500 amplifiers. Together, these products redefine the listening experience with improved bass and precision, especially when paired with four Definitive Technology IWSub10/10 in-wall subwoofers. In addition, the whole cinema room, including the walls and ceiling, was acoustically treated to remove any echo and provide the optimum audio isolation and reproduction properties.

“ We pride ourselves on strong client relationships and attention to detail to deliver truly unique state-of-the-art installations.

CUSTOM MADE

For the display, Aktivworld installed a custom-made 119in 16.9 Euroscreen Vision Vel-Tex ReAct 3 projection screen, which achieves an optimal flat viewing surface with enhanced light control, combined with an Epson 4K laser, a solution noted for vivid colours and strong blacks. The Epson projector was fixed into place via a ceiling mounted drop pole mount. Whole-room control was achieved using the AWE-supplied URC MRX10 Total Control 2.0 system hub, along with a URC TDC-7100 table-top touchscreen. This solution allows the homeowner the simplicity in control they were looking for. The whole cinema is controlled via a bespoke custom user interface. The unique 7in TDC-7100 desktop controller was created to provide attractive and responsive control over the system with added security and room-to-room connection benefits, as well as a camera and speaker to work alongside the intercom system. To finish the install, the home cinema also benefits from an intelligent lighting system, made up using lighting control components, which support the scene control via the installed URC TC 2.0 system. Kevan sums up, “Overall, the installation is a stunning state-of-the-art home cinema with exceptional audio and video reproduction that I am very proud of. The interior design and finish of the room complements the technology to provide a truly stunning home cinema. From the initial demo and throughout the project, AWE provided exceptional support and service, with special thanks going to the sales and technical teams. Aktivworld www.aktivworld.co.uk

The New Sonos Amp The versatile amplifier for powering all your entertainment.

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: RUSSOUND MBX-AMP

RUSSOUND MBX-AMP

A SOUND PROPOSITION? This month, Richard Stevenson, our intrepid trade focused reviewer, puts the Russound MBX-AMP through its paces. Single zone amplified streamers with Wi-Fi connectivity are becoming the go-to audio hub for smaller installs or zones not easily reached by structured cabling. Competing head to head with Sonos’ new Amp (reviewed in August issue), Russound offers its MBX-AMP. Same price, similar multi-room features and its own MyRussound app, plus a few juicy bonuses over the incumbent, including Bluetooth connectivity, Chromecast and High-Resolution Audio capability. The MBX-AMP is designed to be a simple solution from the outset yet Russound has been careful to ensure that it’s not so ‘simple’ customers can simply buy the units off the shelf and expand the system themselves. It arrives from the factory locked until a Certified Russound Installer applies a code through its browser interface to unlock it. Some of the deeper configurations settings, including network set-up, are only available if the unit is reset, once again requiring the CRI’s unique code. This installer-heavy back end will certainly avoid the MBX finding its way onto net-discounter sites and keeps the customer out of the back-end configuration, which is never a bad thing.

62 OCTOBER 2019

The specification is everything you would expect at this price including wired and wireless networking, digital and analogue inputs with daisychain outputs, dedicated subwoofer output RCA, IR in and USB port for music on external drives. While there is no HDMI connectivity for ARC backhaul, it integrates with TV via optical with autoswitching and the ability to control volume through the TV’s remote. Amplification is cool running and offers a healthy 2 x 50W into 8Ohms. There are plenty of music services builtin, UPnP streaming, easy integration with mainstream control systems and it is AirPlay enabled. Keeping it right up to date, there is both Google Home and Alexa voice control integration. Russound also offers an identical version without amplification called the MBX-PRE.

INSTALLATION

The MBX-AMP allows for expansion to up to 32 streaming rooms of audio in a single installation with any combination of other MBX-Series streaming products from Russound. When paired with a Russound multi-room controller, system expansion is possible up to 8 independent audio sources and up to 48 total rooms of audio. We tested a single unit install but the slick set-up, once the CRI gates have been unlocked, is simple. The chassis is compact, robust plastic design with ample ventilation top and bottom. Its not going to stack as easily as the Sonos Amp as it needs some air space above, but it will fit two abreast on a 2U rack shelf with room to breathe. For in-room installations, a pair of sleek wall hangers are provided for discrete vertical

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: RUSSOUND MBX-AMP

possition. Inspired by the Artison Backpack review in the last issue, we hooked the MBX onto the rear of a VESA 300 mount with ease for very discrete installation behind the TV. The speaker binding posts are audiophile quality designed for bare end cable, spades or banana plugs. The MyRussound app or the IP address web interface bounces first time users into the CRI lockdown page asking for the installer’s username and password credentials. Beyond this the web interface offers a raft of set up options including a status page, power management and idle timeout, auto digital input selection, enabling Bluetooth and direct access to Russound support. The app front end is sleek and consumerfriendly, with easy access to hard source selection, UPnP, USB input, Bluetooth and Airplay plus and

a raft of service logins. These include vTuner and TuneIn, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Napster and plenty of smaller players.

PERFORMANCE

Having just boxed-up the Sonos Amp, the Russound MBX-AMP punched out a lively and engaging sound, guaranteed to get the foot tapping and head bobbing. The scale and maximum SPL with regular residential loudspeakers belies its 50Wpc rating with ease, and the low volume loudness compensation and EQ controls are nicely subtle but effective. There is an immediate Hi-Fi pedigree to the sound and an impressively wide soundstage. The MBX-AMP won’t play Tidal’s Masters MQA content at this time, but it will handle up

to 24bit/192kHz High Res Audio in AAC/AAC+ formats, further backing up its Apple credentials. Switching between sources and services within the app is seamless and the MBX-AMP’s front panel buttons are a handy feature if the unit is on show. Even given a lengthy high-volume listening session the MBX-AMP didn’t get too hot. The MyRussound app is good albeit lacking a little of the slick panache and feature depth of Sonos. Its album artwork rendering is a standout feature, with high resolution images offering real pop compared to the often compressed and muted graphics displayed on other system’s app controllers. The app remained stable throughout a couple of weeks of testing and the overall sound never fails to impress. The MBX-AMP is a supremely slick, great sounding solution to single-zone audio with neat TV integration and plenty of potential to expand the system with customer’s needs. Perhaps most importantly, the Certified Installer programme and Russound’s strict adherence to it gives the MBX range a real commercial edge over competitor products that customers can buy off the shelf. When those customers want to expand, or they need to change back-end settings, they will require their installer, which opens the door to a solid upsell opportunity.

INSTALL PIONEERS: JOHN BAGBY

A NEW BEGINNING EI spoke with John Bagby, MD of Paradigm, Anthem, and Martin Logan brands to get the inside track on the past present and future of these high-performance audio brands.

How did you get into the AV/Install business? I grew up surrounded by high performance audio and cool gadgets, so I have always had an interest in this area. After university, I worked as a custom AV installer for a Toronto-based custom integrator. I spent four years there learning everything I could about audio, home automation and control, and networking and system design. I remember seeing customers just so blown away by the performance of their new systems, what they were experiencing in their new home theatres, or their kitchen or backyard, all around their house. That was my first real ‘ah-ha’ moment. I realised that the experiences people have with our products can really be something special. I originally interviewed for an analyst position with Paradigm, but they determined that my skillset was more technical, and they asked me to work in technical support. This was probably one of the most impactful roles I’ve ever had, in terms of how I viewed the business. Later, in the lead-up to the new MRX/AVM launch (Anthem’s AVR line), I was asked to handle dealer and product training for Western North America. I really enjoyed the time I was able to spend on the road travelling, having the opportunity to meet and interact with so many of our dealers.

This eventually led to my assuming the role of Anthem Product Manager in 2016, which is the position I held until the acquisition in May. (ED, John and Scott Bagby – one of the founders of the company – purchased back all three brands in May of this year with Shoreview Industries, a private equity firm out of Minneapolis, exiting the company having purchased the brands in 2005).

How did it feel taking ownership of the Paradigm/Anthem/Martin Logan brands? In two words, it felt ‘good’, and it felt ‘right’.

You decided to take ownership because you felt that the company had grown too subordinate to the bottom line. What difference will this change make? I think the biggest difference will be seen in a new freedom to explore possibilities that may not make sense when viewed from a balance sheet. The teams behind all three brands remain incredibly passionate about exploring innovative ideas and directions and delivering high performance products. We want to push boundaries. We want to explore. We acknowledge that not every path you go down is going to produce a monetary benefit. Sometimes, the journey will take us in unexpected directions. But we believe that as long as we are learning and growing, increasing our knowledge, then our explorations and innovations are well worthwhile.

The Décor series delivers bespoke opportunities

You were recently in the uk at Pulse Cinemas, training dealers on updates to the range and ARC: Genesis room correction software, how did it go? It was an incredible trip and a great experience getting to see what Pulse is doing with their facility and how they are approaching the market. The support they are providing for their dealers is top notch, and shows what can be accomplished when you treat those relationships as more than just business. They are real partners both to their dealers and to us. We’re excited to see what the future holds.

After your first trip to the UK, do you have a view on the differences between the US/Canadian markets and the UK? The events thrown by Pulse were a great opportunity to interface directly with UK dealers, and to have discussions with them about what they’re seeing in the market. I think that what consumers are interested in remains largely the same: a great entertainment experience. Because of differences in basic construction techniques, dealers and installers in the UK sometimes have to use different tools to achieve this. But our mission is to build products flexible enough to provide UK dealers with as many different ways as possible to deliver this excitement to their customers.

INSTALL PIONEERS: JOHN BAGBY

The company creates high-quality products at its own factory

Can you break down the most important enhancements to the ARC: Genesis platform? The ARC platform received a dramatic overhaul in the recent year. We decided to approach this from a fresh perspective and spent a great deal of time understanding the pros and cons of the legacy UI/ UX; user feedback, or voice of customer, is very important to us. Our objective was to improve easeof-use while providing even greater customisation for our customers. In addition to many qualityof-life improvements, we spent time refining our proprietary algorithm for even greater results. If I had to rank the top three enhancements, it would look something like this. 1. New User Interface and User Experience; greatly simplifies the look and feel while providing easy access to commonly used features. Allows for even greater user customisation. 2. Cross Platform Compatibility; even greater flexibility with OSX and Windows support. 3. Proprietary ARC: Genesis algorithm; for superior results.

ARC: Genesis is a very advanced platform, and yet it is surprisingly user-friendly. Has auto-roomcorrection technology completely taken over from manual EQ setting, or can the two work together? I believe that, for now, there is room for the two technologies to coexist. They are not yet mutually exclusive; however, it’s worth noting that including both technologies can be counter-productive. In the hands of an experienced technician, manually adjusting a system EQ can result in a surprising

66 OCTOBER 2019

level of performance. But absent the presence of a highly trained technician, an auto-EQ system such as ARC: Genesis effectively balances this same capability with flexibility, ease-of-use and nearly instantaneous high-performance results. We believe that the boundaries of what is possible with a sophisticated auto-EQ like ARC: Genesis have yet to be fully explored. We’re investigating technologies now that we are very excited about. At some point, the performance of auto-EQ systems will so far outstrip manual EQ that manual EQ will be rendered obsolete. In true reference systems, where sophisticated measurement and analysis are being conducted by a uniquely skilled human operator, we may not have crossed that threshold. But it’s only a matter of time. And for high performance consumer equipment, we may actually have already passed the point where a manual EQ can compete with a system like ARC: Genesis. At best, in this situation, manual EQ can be a subtle adjunct to the advanced EQ protocols of ARC: Genesis. In such cases, manual EQ should still use instantly summed, averaged, and smoothed multipoint frequency response measurement, such as you get with ARC: Genesis, due to its being more effective than the usual manual single-point of measurement which is still the standard for manual EQ. This has been verified through research.

It’s been the entry point to the Paradigm brand for generations of customers and I think really shows our dedication to great performance at every price point. The Décor is an exciting new direction that leverages our North American manufacturing footprint to deliver truly custom solutions. It also shows that performance and aesthetics don’t need to be mutually exclusive, you’re able to integrate great sound into modern interiors without objection and I think that’s a really great thing to be talking about. The Persona 5F, for me, provides the best balance between size, performance, and looks in the Persona line. It’s not quite able to keep up with its big brothers the 7F and 9H but manages to punch way above its weight in performance. Combined with all the different colour combinations it’s something you can really personalise to your environment, a show piece that’s still modestly sized. Lastly out of the CI range I’d have to go with the Elite E80-A. It has so many of the advancements and technologies we have developed over the years: ART Surround, PPA Lens, RED tweeters combined with advanced motor geometries, split voice coils, and oversized magnets that combine for incredible performance in a discrete in-ceiling package. The fixed 30° angle has been optimised for use as LCRs while maintaining an optimal crossover arrangement between the drivers that you can’t get with down firing speakers that pivot.

INSTALL PIONEERS: JOHN BAGBY

They provide the performance people expect from Paradigm without needing to compromise on the design of the room.

Anthem

STR Int/Pre/Amp The STR series was for me a very exciting shift in where we are as a brand, the majority of my systems have been 2.0 or 2.1. They marry style and performance with unique Anthem technologies. Not to mention they’re what currently powers my home system and over the years I’ve really grown to love their ability to be both extremely delicate and nuanced with their sound, while also being able to drop the hammer and deliver huge sound when needed.

MartinLogan

Masterpiece Impression 11A: Electromotion The Electromotion was the first pair of electrostats I had the chance to experience in person and made me instantly fall in love with the sonics of the technology. They deliver incredible performance and are approachable in size and price while offering a window into the wonderful experiences that high performance audio can deliver. My first thought when I listened to them and heard the price was ‘why doesn’t everyone have a pair of these?’. We’re hard at work solving that problem. The 11A is a product that spoke to me the first time I managed to get in front of them, right now I’m deciding between the 11A and the Persona 5F for my home system. Like I said earlier it’s choosing your favourite child and unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to put a second system!

Today’s technology offers more convenience than ever. Do you see an opportunity to create a new type of ‘Hi-Fi’ market as technological convenience supplements high performance?

technology you will be integrating into your home! Just as you wouldn’t consider building a home without electrical or plumbing, home technology is now part of the infrastructure of a home. The integrator channel is perfectly positioned to take advantage of this shift!

This is a very exciting time in this industry. We believe that ‘Lifestyle Hi-Fi’ the marriage of convenience with performance, is a huge opportunity for us to engage a new wave of consumers who may have previously chosen accessibility over quality. We have always been big believers that technology is the great equalizer, and we are entering a period where performance and convenience are no longer mutually exclusive. With the rise and ubiquity of easy to access, high quality, digital content, we can return the discussion to audio quality and performance without placing limitations on how people use the technology, without requiring them to change their daily routine in order to enjoy it. Let’s talk about how we can reproduce that convenient digital content in the most realistic way possible.

Can you let us in on what the company is working on now; some hints about what installers can look forward to in the future?

How do you see the future market for integrators? Can the market compete with cheaper, more ‘DIY’ type products? Actually, I see the rise of DIY products as being something that, over time, will be very beneficial for the industry. It has shifted the home technology conversation to the front of people’s minds. We are rapidly approaching a point where the discussion isn’t about whether you’re going to be integrating technology into your home, but rather how much

Product development is something we are taking in a few new directions. It may be a little early to talk about. I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise. Aside from that, we have spent the last few months having open and detailed discussions with our dealers about what they would like to see from us moving forward. One of the biggest changes we have in store, in the short term, is a reorientation toward a more customer-focused perspective as we build out the tools to better support our dealers and their customers. But I can say that we have more than a few exciting products in development, and they are definitely going to deliver on our mission of building innovative solutions that provide great performance at a reasonable price.

Lastly, what is the very best thing about your role? My office has a bathroom. In the UK Paradigm and Anthem AV are supplied by Pulse Cinemas; pulsecinemas.com, paradigm.com, anthemav.com; Martin Logan is supplied by PMC Distribution; pmc-speakers.com, martinlogan.com

OFFICE & BOARDROOM

LOGITECH: WORKING TOWARDS A BETTER FUTURE Exclusive to EI, Anne Marie Ginn, Head of Video Collaboration, EMEA at Logitech, explains what intstallers need to know about the future of the workplace. Today, demand for video conferencing is booming. According to a recent study from Frost & Sullivan the global conferencing services market is expected to grow gradually and reach $11 billion by 2023, due to the accelerated usage of conferencing via cloud web and video, mobility and rich analytics. What’s more, the same report predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will play an important role in driving this growth by creating video conferencing applications that deliver more natural, contextual, and relevant meeting experiences. This data suggests that while demand for video collaboration is growing, traditional video conferencing is becoming a thing of the past. Gone are the days when video conferencing was only used in large boardrooms for formal presentations and meetings. Today’s businesses are shifting their focus to create a flexible working environment.

With half of the UK workforce expected to work remotely by 2020, video enabled communication will become more important than ever for ensuring an organisation can continue to operate productively. It’s not surprising then that a growing number of businesses are investing in huddle rooms and multi-purpose breakout areas that are equipped with video devices. However, these steps are just the beginning of enhancing productivity, and as office spaces continue to evolve, so is collaboration technology. In this article I’ll explore the next stage of innovation in video conferencing, driven by the adoption of AI.

HOW AI IS TRANSFORMING VIDEO CONFERENCING

Advancements in AI can dramatically improve the user experience and drive efficiencies by helping automate time-consuming collaboration tasks. In fact, AI can drive innovation in three key areas: meeting room analytics, natural language processing, and computer vision.

ANALYSING MEETING ROOM USE TO DRIVE PRODUCTIVITY

AI-driven devices can make conference rooms smarter and meetings run more efficiently by analysing factors that you may not have considered. For example, AI can automate tasks such as rescheduling calls and rebooking meeting rooms based on conversations over email or sending important notifications about which rooms are available and which are busy. AI could even suggest which resources or documents you may need to bring to a meeting ahead of time or enable screen sharing within and across rooms. The data insights generated from AI can also be a valuable tool for making the most of office space and helping facilities management teams to operate efficiently.

OCTOBER 2019 69

OFFICE & BOARDROOM

For example, AI can help businesses to understand how meeting rooms are being used – how many people on average use each of them, for how long, at what times of the day and if meetings typically overrun. As a result, occupancy levels could be better managed, making sure the right room is free for the right type of meeting.

THE POWER OF NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING

Natural language processing (NLP) is already being used to improve video conferencing applications in multiple ways. For example, it can facilitate the automatic transcription of meetings, sharing actions and notes, and even the translation of the conversations into different languages. When combined with AI capabilities, NLP can also enable chatbots or virtual assistants to start, join and leave meetings by using a voice command feature. And these aren’t the only uses for natural language processing. It can also support better audio quality, as it can automatically suppress echo and minimise background noise. For example, if someone was rustling paper or receiving noisy notifications on their laptop during the meeting, the technology is intelligent enough to muffle this background noise. This, coupled with evolving techniques such as automatic levelling and beamforming, will make everyone in the meeting easy to hear and understand.

COMPUTER VISION: MAKING THE MOST OF EACH VIDEO INTERACTION

Ultimately, none of these useful advancements would be possible without the development of computer vision in video conferencing. Computer vision frames meeting participants and then automatically adjusts the zoom to deliver a better video experience for those on the far end. When the number of participants changes or people move to a different part of the room, the camera control allows to automatically tilt, pan and zoom to centre and frame participants. This could be particularly useful for more interactive meetings, for instance if someone stood up to draw a diagram on a flip chart. More advanced functions of computer vision include gaze correction and controlling the background environment in the room to improve user experience. For instance, when combined with AI capabilities, computer vision can support colour and light correction by automatically detecting potential issues and amending them by emphasising faces even in dim or backlit rooms.

70 OCTOBER 2019

THE BOTTOM LINE: AI IS POISED TO DELIVER SMARTER MEETINGS

AI has the potential to transform video conferencing and enable a much better user experience and more productive video meetings. However, for all this to happen, the industry needs to ensure interoperability between video conferencing devices in a multi-vendor AI environment.

All players in the marketplace will need to work together to make sure that new advancements in AI and computing vision are designed with the user’s privacy in mind. Only by improving the reliability of emerging video conferencing technologies and building trust in the ecosystem, will we be able to drive mainstream adoption of AI-based video collaboration. This will be key for ensuring all industry players can reap the productivity benefits of this technology.

SONOS LAUNCHES MOVE BATTERY-POWERED MOBILE SPEAKER Sonos has taken its first step out of the home with Sonos Move, a durable, battery-powered smart speaker for audio indoors, outdoors, and on the go. A full part of the Sonos system on Wi-Fi with the added range of Bluetooth, Sonos claims Move is a powerful product that resets the bar for portable speakers. The speaker is available now and costs £399. As part of the Sonos universe, Move supports the same streaming services, multiple voice assistants, AirPlay2 as the rest of the line-up and is one of three new products launching this autumn, joined by Sonos Port and Sonos One SL, further building on the company’s smart system of speakers and components. Sonos says Move offers adaptable sound, surprisingly deep bass and a wide sound profile. Suited for indoor listening and sound on the go, Sonos says Move offers powerful wireless range, and also is the company’s first product with Bluetooth streaming. Trueplay is also included. Move features an oval shadow-black design and its durable exterior is designed to withstand falls, bumps, rain and moisture, dust and dirt, UV and extreme temperatures, featuring a rating of IP56. Move’s battery allows for up to ten hours of play time on a single

charge and at home, Move slides on and off the included indoor charging base. Suspend mode, enabled automatically when not in use or by tapping the power button, reserves the battery for up to five days. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are also built in. Further rounding out the Sonos family is the One SL, a smart speaker without integrated voice assistants, but with access to all the other familiar Sonos content access and operational features. One SL replaces Play:1 and is available globally starting September 12 for £179. From any source to any speaker, Port brings Sonos streaming to a stereo or receiver. The successor to the original Connect, Sonos says the Port delivers richer sound and extends Sonos’s sound platform to traditional home audio equipment. Port will be available in limited quantities starting 12 September, with broad global availability starting January 2020 for £399. Sonos www.sonos.com

GO WITH THE MONITOR AUDIO FLOW Monitor Audio’s new IMS-4 Music Streamer is the latest addition to its range of custom install solutions. Featuring BluOS, the IMS-4 can stream to four separate zones and its BluOS Controller app offers flexibility of operation including access to music libraries and streaming from music services, which can also be voice controlled through a smart device. BluOS allows streaming of lossless music up to 24-bit/192 kHz to every room in a home network. Accessed through the BluOS app, or one of the many supported integrated control systems, multiple IMS-4 Music Streamers can be integrated with other BluOS devices to provide up to 64 zones of music, with each zone able to play together in perfect sync or to simultaneously play different streams to separate zones. With BluOS the IMS-4 delivers millions of Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) recordings and works in tandem with an installation amplifier

such as Monitor Audio’s IA150-8C. Integrated with Crestron, Control4 and RTI, the IMS-4 is also compatible with other BluOS enabled devices. Analogue and digital inputs allow the addition of a cable box or other non-network sources and make them available in every zone. It also includes a system interrupt feature to allow doorbells and fire alarms to be heard. All of the technology fits into a slimline form with the IMS-4 occupying 1U rack space. Monitor Audio’s technical director, Michael Hedges, says, “I am delighted with the capability of our IMS-4 Music Streamer, it is easy to integrate and use and offers a modern and flexible streaming solution for the home. Our newest product is an important addition to our growing range of custom install solutions.” Monitor Audio www.monitoraudio.co.uk

LYNGDORF AUDIO MP-60 PROCESSOR LAUNCHES Lyngdorf has introduced the MP-60 immersive sound processor created for the demanding audiophile, who requires the ultimate performance in immersive formats as well as stereo. Together with the Steinway Lyngdorf version, Model P300, the MP-60 was developed at the group headquarters in Skive, Denmark and is equipped with all the technologies for which Lyngdorf Audio is known, including the room correction system, RoomPerfect and full digital signal processing. The MP-60 features decoding and balanced outputs for 16 audio channels, designed to deliver ease of installation and daily use. With eight HDMI inputs and three outputs (one being HDBaseT) this new machine from Lyngdorf Audio now supports the HDMI 2.1 features eARC, Dynamic Lip-Sync and QMS (Quick Media Switching) as well as the latest decoding and post-processing formats. With its full 16 channel decoding, the MP60 offers full support of the immersive surround

formats Dolby Atmos, DTS:X PRO and AURO3D, and the maker argues it delivers a surround sound experience that outmatches anything in and above its class. Allowing a video throughput of up to 18 Gbps, the MP-60 now supports the full 4K 60Hz video stream including the passing of HDR or Dolby Vision information. eARC will allow for a full Dolby Atmos audio bitstream being ‘returned’ to the processor from the television allowing for full audio quality from the TV’s built-in media players. The MP-60 of course also supports the pass-through of the new HDR format for streaming video: HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma). With its visual speaker layout, the setup menu will enable everybody to have the optimal processor setup for their speaker system, and with features like the HDBaseT connector, installers can connect to a projector in the ceiling with uncompressed full HD digital video and audio. Three optional modules allow for digital

connection to DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) movie servers, an AES67 compliant audio system or digitally to active loudspeakers or amplifiers with digital input. The brand is available in the UK via Gecko Home Cinema. Gecko Home Cinema www.geckohomecinema.com

new proprietary 7+2 eARC HDMI card which makes for faster and more robust switching with full HDMI2.0b/HDCP2.2 support. Designed by StormAudio, the card delivers 4K,18 Gigabytes per second bandwidth on all input and output ports, solid DolbyVision and HDR10 is also supported. The integrated eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), a feature of HDMI 2.1, provides a boost in bandwidth and speed, sending the audio from the 8K TV to the processor, and on to the amps and speakers. The brand’s new Mark2 platform can decode up to 24-channels (Dolby Atmos 13.1.10) and features ultra-fast codec switching time and reduced latency (50% reduction). With respect to immersive audio formats, the processors are ready to support both DTS:X Pro and IMAX Enhanced. Also incorporated is Auro-3D Version 2 which

enables use of back speakers in a 13.1 layout with a 9.1 or 11.1 Auro-3D stream. Auro-3D V2 also brings improved center channel dialogue when up-mixing from stereo. The processors feature StormAudio’s updated Bass Management system which allows for multiple bass zones (customsable selective redirection). As a Dirac supporter, the processors are ready for Dirac Live Bass Management support which delivers phase and time alignment of multiple subwoofers within a theater. This is provided at no charge to StormAudio dealers and customers. The brand is available in the UK from Pulse Cinemas. Pulse Cinemas www.pulsecinemas.com

PMC LAUNCHES CI140 & CI140SUB The first two models of PMC’s all new custom installation loudspeakers have been unveiled. The first two models, the ci140 and ci140sub were launched at CEDIA Expo 2019, with the ci30, ci45, ci90slim and ci65 following in Q1 2020. The ci Series incorporates the proprietary PMC technologies and audio quality from its audiophile speakers and studio monitors, that the company underlines have been responsible for the soundtracks of hundreds of movies, into a slimline, highperformance on-wall and in-wall custom installation loudspeaker. All are designed with a shallow depth for wall mounting and all models, apart from the ci140 and ci140sub, are also designed to be used in-wall. An optional mounting

sleeve fits around the cabinets of the ci30, ci45, ci90slim and ci65 to conceal the inwall mounting system and create a discrete on-wall model. The use of one product for both in-wall and on-wall reduces the number of models that need to be stocked and gives the installer greater flexibility with mounting options, says the maker. PMC says the speed of in-wall mounting makes the entire range very installer-friendly. The ci30, ci45, ci90slim and ci65 are fitted with PMC’s Qikfire spring loaded mounting system, which, with a twist of a screwdriver, mounts the loudspeaker and permits post installation micro adjustment. Removal is just as easy, with a simple twist. The on-wall mounting of each model is a simple process

using the optional interlocking wall bracket, which is designed to also offer pin-point level adjustment. The drive units are developed from PMC’s knowledge of driver design and comprise the LT woofer and the longer throw and higher power handling version, the LTx, with their 130mm (5.25in) natural fibre cones, the 50mm (2in) dome midrange and a 27mm (1.1in) dome tweeter. The cabinets all feature PMC’s Advance Transmission Line (ATL) bass loading technology and Laminair vents, plus a sophisticated, hand-built, precision crossover. PMC www.pmc-speakers.com

CENTRE YOURSELF WITH ROON NUCLEUS AND NUCLEUS+ As well as proving a feature rich way to engage with content, the Roon platform also offers hardware with its Roon Nucleus and Nucleus+, released in 2018. Built on Intel Core i3 (Nucleus) and i7 (Nucleus+) processors, they delivered the ultimate Roon experience. Boasting a purposebuilt OS for reliable performance and a unique set of features, they have established themselves in both the high-performance home audio and custom install markets. Henley Audio, UK distributor for the hardware, has announced the imminent UK availability of a new, revised version of the servers. The Nucleus and Nucleus+ retain the specifications of the previous version, but benefit from new production facilities, a facelift and some revised features. Nucleus and Nucleus+ units are now being manufactured at a new production facility in California, USA, and in the move Roon Labs has taken the opportunity to revise the chassis

into a wider, deeper and shallower form, while retaining the same passive cooling system as the previous iteration. The internal layout has also been changed to allow for internal SATA drives up to 15mm deep (the previous version could only accommodate 9mm drives), and the inclusion of a second HDMI output on the back panel. There is also more eco-friendly packaging. The changes made in the 2019 Nucleus and Nucleus+ have no real-world impact on the product specifications (like library size or zone count) or user experience (sound quality or speed). In implementing these changes, Roon Labs has also managed to retain the same price as the original version, and stock is available across the UK. SRP £1,500.00 (Nucleus) / £2,500.00 (Nucleus+). SAVANT ADDS RACEPOINT ENERGY, SONNEN AND APPLE TV Automation platform Savant has added support for intelligent energy management solutions provider Racepoint Energy and sonnen ecoLinx and has also added Apple TV compatibility within the Smart Home App. The energy management part of the equation leverages Savant’s home automation and control platform (along with the Savant Pro App), Racepoint Energy’s Dynamic Load Management (DLM) and Breaker-Companion Module technology and sonnen’s ecoLinx intelligent energy storage system to facilitate a clean energy management solution. Savant says integrators can now deliver all of these components and their related functionality in a fully-integrated solution that seamlessly manages energy usage, providing

homeowners with greater overall energy efficiency and energy independence during peak periods, power outages and beyond. Savant says the ecoLinx system offers the safest, longest-lasting and most innovative storage technology on the market. By storing excess energy generated by the sun and deploying it when needed most – like on cloudy days, peak, periods, and power outages – it manages and maximises energy usage day and night to power the home in the cleanest way possible. Now, by combining sonnen’s intelligent energy storage technology with Savant’s smart home ecosystem and Racepoint Energy’s controllable breaker modules, homeowners have access to smart configurable backup

power during outages, robust circuit monitoring, intelligent demand control for Savant subsystems, automated weather response to prepare the home for potential outages, and real-time household energy consumption data from the Savant App and platform. Savant has also introduced the Smart Home App for Apple TV, an on-screen control platform designed to provide fast and intuitive access to smart home functionality via high-definition graphics. The graphical control icons can be shown full screen or as an overlay to live TV or a movie that is currently playing. Savant Europe www.savanteurope.co.uk

Replacing the Chorus range, Chora has been created to embody French manufacturing quality and the maker argues is an outstanding new entry into the AV world. In addition to a unique design perfected by three new finishes, the midrange and bass speaker drivers in the Chora loudspeakers are made of an all-new cone, that is designed to offer instant sound appeal and visual charm. Slatefiber is a unique new speaker driver material designed and manufactured by Focal. Behind its slate-effect looks hides impressive speaker-cone performance, as a result of a range of technical innovations, says the maker. Focal has introduced new materials: thermoplastic polymer, with nonwoven recycled carbon fibres that achieve even greater damping, rigidity and lightness. Focal says

that the sound reproduction of midrange frequencies is perfectly balanced and rich, with minimal colouration and plenty of dynamics. The Chora line consists of the Chora 826 and Chora 816floorstanding loudspeakers and the Chora 806 bookshelf loudspeaker. All bass-reflex designs, in addition to the Slatefiber speaker drivers, these sound solutions integrate a TNF Aluminium/Magnesium tweeter – another Focal signature – for a strongly rendered treble. Chora loudspeakers are available in Black, Light Wood and Dark Wood finishes. Modern, ‘on-trend’ colours that fit within a range of styles of interior. To complete the range, more Chora sound solutions are due to be launched in 2020, with the focus on Home Cinema, more news on those when we get it. UK distribution is handled by OneAV. Intercom Anywhere now also supports multifamily installations, where a centralised doorbell can be used by multiple housing units, to direct a call to the appropriate tenant. With the addition of new smart doorbells, the ecosystem continues to grow, giving homeowners the opportunity to receive a notification the moment their child arrives home from school, see who’s at the door, tell a delivery driver to leave a package in the entryway, and lock the door as they depart. Designed for large installations where redundancy and high-availability are required to meet customer expectations, the CA-10 controller delivers four times the processing power and memory of the EA-5 controller for consistent performance, even when controlling thousands of devices. The EA-5 includes redundant power supplies, network ports, sold state drives, and fans, ensuring continuous operation even in the rare case of a hardware failure, says its creator.
