It’s Time To Go Live! A very warm welcome to our special EI Live! preview edition of the magazine. Of course we would argue that every issue of EI is special, however show issues always have a particular place in our hearts as we redouble our efforts in particular at this time to not only provide the best magazine we can, but also a live experience to go with it. When we first launched EI magazine into what at the time was quite a crowded market, we were confident that what we were going to produce, would quickly allow the magazine to rise to the top of the pile and stay there. Not only have we managed that with the help and support of the industry, we have gone further and the magazine is now one of only two trade titles which operate in the sector as a direct result of the level of popularity EI mag has generated. We take our presence in the live arena every bit as seriously as the magazine and have worked hard to produce a show that fits exactly the needs of the market we represent. We always however appreciate and need feedback from the industry and organisers have been keen over the years to seek input from exhibitors and visitors alike. So the show as it exists today is in no small part a direct result of this feedback; in a very real sense this is your show and we will continue to work closely with the industry to make sure we deliver. Inside this issue you will find our usual dedicated preview of the show, highlighting just a few of the initiatives and launches that the show will offer this year. Also included with this issue is the official show guide, so you can start to plan your visit. This year I would particularly like to draw your attention to the Learning Zone: we have some really top speakers and intriguing subjects this time around, check out the details in our preview, beginning on page 39.

The show-floor will feature many launches, exclusives and offers only available at this event, making the show a must-attend. Which technologies will dominate this year? Voice control? Home cinema? Something else? You will have to be there to find out. If you are a show regular or someone who has never been to the event before, this year, as the industry stands on the edge of a much higher profile and potential for expansion, it has never been more important to make the time to visit. If you are a smart building veteran or just beginning your journey into the industry, EI Live! has something for you. We would particularly like to thank this year’s sponsors for making such a big effort in helping us create this year’s event. Headline sponsors are HDANYWHERE and the Learning Zone sponsor is CYP. Habitech has been appointed ARCAM UK distributor

Habitech To Distribute ARCAM In The UK UK CI distributor Habitech is boosting its product offering with ARCAM’s range of home entertainment electronics. Included in the new profile will be ARCAM’s ‘FMJ’ range of stereo and AV receivers, processors, players and power amplifiers, which Habitech says provide integrators with the opportunity to unite versatile power with the latest processing technologies for seamless UHD AV in virtually any environment. Combined with the delivery of strong signal purity, all FMJ control products have the ability to integrate with home automation systems through drivers for Crestron and Control4. Commenting on the agreement, ARCAM’s sales and marketing manager, Richard Trotter said: “As our business continues its resurgence in the UK, it’s become clear that we do not have the resources to deal with demand from the custom install sector – our strength being in retail support. “To fully and efficiently engage with this channel we have decided to appoint Habitech as our exclusive distributor. We’ve chosen Habitech for a number of reasons, chief among them being that they alone offer the level of technical back up and support that a specialist brand like ARCAM requires. Habitech has gained huge respect in the custom install sector and is a great asset to our total offering in the UK.” Habitech’s sales manager, Timmi Thorsen, added: “We’re delighted to be able to offer the performance and versatility of the ARCAM brand to our customers. It perfectly complements our home theatre product line-up and widens the choice of design options available with a proven prowess in AV processing and amplification from one to twelve channels.” The first place installers will be able to see these two companies in unison is at EI Live! on May 10-11. Sky Q users can now search for content using their voice

Sky has officially rolled out a brand new update to Sky Q, meaning users can now search for a myriad of content using their voice. Acoustic Energy Regains UK Ownership In Time For 30th Anniversary

The business of Acoustic Energy Limited is now registered under Acoustic Energy Loudspeakers Limited

Acoustic Energy has announced that it has successfully bought the company from its Malaysian parent company, Formosa Prosonic Group in time for its 30th anniversary since forming in 1987. Acoustic Energy will continue to operate and manufacture from its Cotswolds, UK HQ, together with dedicated manufacturing partners overseas to produce AE’s range of loudspeakers. Senior management, internal contacts and sales teams remain unchanged and all existing international distribution agreements remain in place. “Becoming an independently owned British loudspeaker company once again is a very exciting development in AE’s history,” commented company director, Mat Spandl. “This year our new active version of the legendary AE1 became an overnight ‘sell-out success’ following the launch at the recent Bristol Show. The new AE1 is an integral part of an ambitious roadmap for 2017 including more new products rolling into production right now,” he added. “With the UK economy remaining strong and exchange rates bolstering our international sales, the timing is perfect to capitalise on the renewed growth in the global audio industry and achieve further success for AE over the next 30 years.” Formosa Prosonic (FP) Group has owned and acted as major OEM partner to AE for the past 22 years. The move comes with full blessing and ongoing support from FP to ensure a seamless transition of ownership. More information: Acoustic Energy +44 (0)1285 654432 www.acoustic-energy.co.uk

The Artcoustic home cinema room in Birmingham

Artcoustic Installation Of The Month This month’s Artcoustic home cinema install of the month is this Birmingham, UK home, which boasts not one, but two Artcoustic rooms. Installed by Home Cinema & Beyond, both entertainment rooms have been designed to deliver in terms of performance, but also provide some fun to the family. The cinema room boasts a 7.2.4 set up comprised of three Spitfire 24-12 reference model speakers, four C-1SLs two-way precision monitors for sides and rears and two multi-drive Performance PS4 subwoofers. The Spitfire 24-12 loudspeakers were installed behind an acoustically transparent screen that delivers both 16:9 and 2.35 images. “The client ended up choosing the top (slightly over specified) proposal, resulting in something truly amazing,” said Paul Cummin, Artcoustic MD. “By showing clear linearity between different proposals, the client is more able to make an informed and considered choice, rather than one purely based on price.” Meanwhile, the second entertainment room – used for gaming – features Bespoke Spitfire 16-8 speakers, which were made to perfectly fit the spaces between the screens. The games room is next to the home theatre and has two 65in screens, two Xbox Ones, two PlayStation 4s and a state of the art PC and VR headset. “The games room brief was less demanding in terms of performance, but the client loved the aesthetics of the Artcoustic speakers and these were produced in a bespoke size such that they perfectly matched the height of the chosen 65in TVs,” said Paul. “The spitfire 16-8s are indeed over-specified for the requirements, but it really makes the client smile!” More information: Artcoustic Loudspeakers +44 (0)1245 400904www.artcoustic.com, Home Cinema & Beyond +44 (0)845 0945780 www.homecinemaandbeyond.co.uk xxx picture caption text in here xxx

Google Home Undercuts Amazon Echo In UK Launch Google Home’s pricing has been announced for the UK, undercutting the Amazon Echo by £20 at £129.99. Despite the cheaper price, Amazon has an ace up its sleeve with the Echo Dot, the puck-sized device housing the Alexa voice assistant and costs just £49.99. Amazon had a significant head start, with the company recently celebrating 10,000 Alexa skills, although EI noted that many of those skills were unavailable to Echo owners in the UK. Despite that, the Amazon Echo still boasts significantly more skills than its Google Home counterpart – with Google having yet to open up its platform to a wealth of third party developers. However, Google Assistant still supports a whole host of different services directly out of the box. That includes standard music streaming services such as Spotify and TuneIn Radio, as well as services not currently supported by the Amazon Echo – including Google’s own Play Music and BBC Radio. In terms of smart home control, there’s nothing that the Google Home can do that the Amazon Echo can’t. In fact, Amazon probably trumps Google here – with Google Home only supporting IFTTT, Nest, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings and Belkin Wemo at launch. Both the Google Home and Amazon Echo sport speakers for directly playing music found by the assistant, although the Echo is a noticeably bigger device – measuring 235mm by 83.5mm; significantly larger than Google Home’s 142.8mm by 96.4mm dimensions. Google Home is available now in a number of consumer electronics stores, including Currys PC World, Argos, Maplin and John Lewis. More information: Google Home https://madeby.google.com/home/

Online Tool Provides Homeowners With Home Cinema, Smart Home, VR Room Packages And Estimates Andrew Lucas London has launched an online design tool that allows homeowners to quickly scope out their smart home project and receive an instant, accurate estimation as to how much their dream smart property will cost. The online quotation tool covers Andrew Lucas’ three main services: home cinemas, smart homes and virtual reality; with the idea being that users will be able to see how the sum could be split along a monthly payment scheme, allowing them to pay for their home Andrew Lucas London’s online tool can be over a period of time rather than having to used to specific and price home cinemas purchase everything upfront. “One of the main frustrations a typical smart home customer has is in understanding the ‘hidden’ costs that occur in a smart home project,” explained Krystian Zajac, chairman and founder of Andrew Lucas London. “Our new quotation tool brings complete transparency to the quotation process.” Although the specific products cannot be disclosed, the company’s fully furnished home cinema offering includes a professional projection system and screen (including 4K Ultra-HD projection system with HDR support options), acoustic treatment and 5.1, 7.1 or 3D audio speaker systems, (including hidden speakers), AV receiver, universal remote and climate and lighting control. All of the company’s smart homes, home cinemas and VR rooms are designed and installed by the Andrew Lucas team. For a smart home project, prospective homeowners can input the basic details of their property and select up to three packages: security, comfort and entertainment. Included in this offering are intruder alarms, smoke and leak detection, indoor/outdoor cameras, video doorbells, heating control, smart lighting, motorised shades, voice control integration, unified control, as well as multiroom audio/surround-sound audio, video distribution and streaming a outdoor speakers. The company also provides a VR room service, allowing prospective homeowners to explore their properties in detail and suggest changes before construction begins on their project. The company’s VR room offering is described as a ‘wireless, backpack-based experience’ that includes high-end VR platforms and gaming PCs, as well as room-scale tracking technology, acoustic treatment, 3D audio speakers, plus, the virtual reality room can be fitted with extra technology to double up as a panic room. xxx picture caption text in here xxx

From Sci-Fi To Wi-Fi At EI Live!

Join Habitech at EI Live! to explore the next great conversation in home control. MD Jonathan Pengilley supplies the superlatives. True to value-added form Habitech custom integrates new and established brands to optimise the latest control tech at EI Live!

No self-respecting Sci-Fi yarn would be complete without the hover-car, the warp drive, the pie and mash in a pill and above all, an eerily anthropomorphic talking computer. Vividly memorable creations like HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey), Deep Thought (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Ship’s Computer (Star Trek) have promoted the AI interlocutor as essential for travel between galaxies. But while the gulf between science fantasy and fact remains insuperable for almost every futuristic gadget or idea (we’re not even living on the moon yet), the ‘talking’ computer is already here and at Habitech, we’re harnessing its power for CI. This is not the sentient electronic human of Arthur C Clarke’s imagination. Neither is it the quasi-experimental work of IBM’s cognitive ‘Watson’ platform, or the amazing evolution in reinforcement learning by Google’s Deep Mind – or anything with an Elon Musk finger in it. I’m talking about a clear and present frontier-busting reality, capable of turning speech into cash, in operation at our Basingstoke HQ and making its UK show debut at EI Live!.

Now We’re Talking Control

Amazon’s Alexa Voice Services (AVS) is just about the smartest and the most sorted voice control system available. The company’s willingness to share the tech means that many big brands as well as smaller IoT wizards like Simple Control are rushing to integrate its space-age magic. Our latest recruit to the ProNet networking stable

is a beautiful fit because, like Alexa, Simple Control is a cloud-based control system communicating over Wi-Fi using IP. And like Alexa it may well define the future direction of home control.

For a moment, park everything you’ve come to understand about home control over the last 15 years: the proprietary software, central controller, serial and IR commands, miles of wire in all directions and programmable remotes. Simple Control changes everything with an ‘open’ Appbased environment on familiar and ubiquitous iOS phones and tablets, mobilising IP control functionality that already exists. It recognises that virtually every new home entertainment device from smart TV screens and AV receivers, to light bulbs and controllers, heating systems and multi-room audio setups has an IP identity and connects over Wi-Fi to the cloud via a control App. Simple Control ties them all together. The world’s largest IP, serial and IR libraries provide preloaded and predesigned graphics, protocols and control codes for tens of thousands of devices. This means that most smart products are already compatible. In place of endless, tedious programming, Simple Control just works. And because it marks a shift in the entire control culture from a rigid prescriptive model to a more liberal IoT cosmos, integrators can manage client systems remotely, saving cost while sustaining the essential service elements of client relationships.

Connecting Protection

Malcolm Richards, managing director at CEDIA member, Veresure Limited, highlights why many homes with automated technology may not be fully insured under their existing insurance policy and why specialised smart automated insurance is the best protection.

Do smart home need special insurance?

In a world where the future is being designed around smart home technology, is it enough to mention to your customers that they should contact their home insurer to cover installed products and devices? To all intents and purposes, it is good customer service to ensure that they have properly covered their new system in the event of a claim should things go wrong, but it isn’t necessarily the best assurance for the home integrator. In the past, when there was a fault with a product or installation, the home integrator had to return to the project to fix the problem, but they weren’t always guaranteed to be paid. As with any product, occasionally things go wrong and it isn’t the fault of the installer, yet they may well feel responsible for it. For this reason, it is important for home technology professionals to have some form of protection against the cost of correcting faults, so that they aren’t spending time on projects without getting paid for their time. We have come across several incidents where home insurers have given the ‘go ahead’ for replacement of integrated products in cases where the home was burned to the ground, totally unaware that the reinstatement of the home incorporated home automation where connectivity costs represented an average of 30% of the replacement spend. Some homes are not what they may appear on the surface because they have control units and smart technology, hidden wires and wireless networks among other things, resulting in reviewing their offering and increasing their premiums. Some insurers already charge additional premiums for products notified after the original policy has been taken out. In other cases, the insurer might take a less favourable stance if they are made aware that the property has smart home automation. In short, they do not like connectivity as it poses a high risk, when and if things go wrong, or if there is a major catastrophe in the home.

Currently, contents and buildings insurance cover can leave customers who experience smart technology failure with a shortfall in insurance cover, leaving them exposed to hidden costs. When you define what a ‘modern ‘connected’ or ‘smart’ home is – a home designed around an infrastructure of fixed, low voltage data cables and wireless connectivity – you begin to understand the dilemma facing the home insurance market. With much of the technology being integrated to provide clever, often one touch operation from anywhere in the world using a smart phone or tablet, the need for specific protection becomes very clear. We would strongly recommend that home integrators advise customers to alert their insurer that their home is automated. If they do not do so, then their insurer could reduce the amount they pay out for the claim, or, in extreme cases, refuse to meet the claim entirely. It is time for the insurance industry to look more closely at what impact the growth in smart homes will have on premiums and insurance risks in the future and, more importantly, how they deal with such claims. There are plenty of companies offering cover for smart goods, but this is not the same as connected home technology. New builds are beginning to include some low end technology and this is expected by new home buyers. What they will receive is a NHBC certificate, but this specifically excludes certain products. Ultimately, insuring the technology within the home is the responsibility of the owner.

The Solution

Smart home insurance needs to protect the whole automation system, including the products, devices, cabling and installation. This will mean that the work that the installer will have to do to fix a fault is always covered. I would suggest recommending a policy that offers the customer the right level of cover to give them the peace of mind they are looking for. Some customers will not have considered the cost of a call-out and the time consumed investigating any fault, in addition there may well be parts required to repair/replace the fault and the integration of those parts. This type of policy will ensure that the home integrator gets paid for time spent on repairs/replacement. For more information on joining CEDIA, visit the association’s website at www.cedia.co.uk. Beyond The Box With HDANYWHERE HDANYWHERE launches Beyond The Box, inviting installers to become an HDA pro and profit from its new business support tools. Witness the exclusive launch at EI Live! Matrix manufacturer HDANYWHERE has launched the ‘Beyond The Box’ business support initiative – a selection of value-add tools and services, free and exclusive to dealers (whom HDA is calling ‘HDA PROs’) designed to aid the growth of their business. Whether you’re a small start-up or large team of seasoned professionals, HDANYWHERE wants to help. Ranging from innovative tech tools that save time and money, to powerful sales and marketing support to help find more customers, overcome objections and win more business; HDA’s Beyond The Box programme shows how the innovative matrix maker can provide installers with much more than just the matrix system.

Tool 1: Promote your business: marketing and branding

HDA can help you arrive in style. Every quarter, completely free-of-charge, an active HDA PRO will be selected at random to win a custom vehicle wrap. The HDA marketing team will also provide the lucky winner with design support to make sure they get the most business benefit possible from their design.

Tool 2: Lead generation: installer network

Visitors to EI Live! have the chance to win a stylish and impactful vehicle wrap

The HDA Installer Network offers a customer referral platform through which you can market your installation company, its services and its past projects directly to end-users living within thirty miles of your business. Being part of the Installer Network makes you more visible to individuals actively seeking to have a HDA whole-home AV system professionally installed. Gifford Malcolm, Director, Bespoke Home Cinemas, comments: “We have been listed on the Installer Network for about a year now, it is a great online tool for the end user to find a reputable dealer and another way of profiling our business. At least three projects last year came about as a direct result of being listed. Enquiries are all local because of the search so we can always access clients requirements quickly.”

Tool 3: Saving time and costs: HDA cloud remote work

Reduce the necessity for callouts and site visits with HDA’s new Remote Management Software (RMS). Whether at the office, Watford Gap services or working from home, the HDA PRO Cloud dashboard offers a secure portal to remotely monitor and manage MHUB installations across multiple client sites. Power-cycling, software rebooting, diagnostics, EDID changes, uControl configuration can all be performed remotely.

Tool 4: Deliver more value for money: uControl – Free IR Remote App

uControl is an attractive and simple IR remote App for AV control in every room, included free with certain MHUB matrix models. Easy to set up within minutes, offering source and TV control via the matrix using integrated patent-pending IP2IR technology. uControl is designed to remove a significant barrier to purchase – the need for the additional hardware and additional expense of a dedicated third party control system. uControl can be used in parallel with, or augment other control systems, replacing the need for costly physical remotes or control panels in lesser used rooms. Thus reducing the overall cost of the complete solution without sacrificing functionality for the end-user. Fundamentally uControl helps HDA PROs to deliver more value for money from less hardware. Dillan Pattni, uControl project lead, says: “We believe home entertainment systems are the gateway to endusers adopting a wider variety of smart home products. Profitability for professionals comes from this opportunity – uControl is risk-free, affordable, faster to install and still leaves the option to add-on a third party control system at a later date. Professionals can use this to their advantage to win more clients’ and more opportunities to sell various products and services to each of them.” Visitors will be able to visit the ‘HDA Cube’ at EI Live! for a live demo of brand’s newly updated RMS and see the remote management tools available to via the HDA Cloud. One lucky visitor to the show will win a commercial vehicle wrap completely free of charge. To be entered into the draw to win the wrap, installers will be asked to perform three tasks via the RMS and to successfully add a new source device into a uControl system. Essential Install | Invision

Invision Launches Five Year Replacement Warranty Across RTI Range Peace of mind is always valuable in any business. However, in an industry where reliability and protecting against possible future dents in profitability is absolutely paramount, like in the smart home sector, any help in this area is a welcome boost. Invision has added to its expansion and support plans which have seen the company grow its footprint in recent years with a brand new initiative aimed at installers of the RTI home automation platform. Invision is now to offer a full five-year warranty program on all RTI products. The warranty program is available to RTI Specialist dealers and has been created to back-up the distributor’s belief that RTI is the most stable and reliable control platform available anywhere in the smart home market. David Meyerowitz, category manager from Invision UK explains: “Invision UK have 10 years of experience distributing RTI products under our belt. With this decade of living with the system day in day out, we are fully confident that RTI is the most stable and reliable control platform available. We are so sure in this belief, that we are prepared to back this up by offering our RTI Specialist dealers with this new five-year replacement warranty program.” Any system installed after the company has registered for the scheme is covered. Exact details of registration and all terms and conditions can be found on Invision’s website (http://invisionuk.com/RTI-ProjectReg/). The RTI platform is also celebrating 25 years in business this year and aims to continue to produce innovative handheld remote controls and automation experiences across its expanding portfolio. Invision UK continues to offer full product and programming training, with full details available via the Invision UK Training Academy (www.invisionuk.com/training). Invision has introduced a fiveyear warranty on all registered RTI systems installed by RTI Specialist dealers

RTI Development

As well as offering this new level of support and peace of mind, the RTI brand has continued to develop its offering from a technical point of view as well. As video intercom is

increasing in popularity and sophistication, RTI is keeping pace with the recent introduction of the functionality for select RTI controllers and third-party intercom-enabled devices. The new offering is a particularly strong option for front door access, security gates, intra-office and roomto-room applications, allowing users to communicate from point to point via their RTI devices. RTI’s video intercom capabilities are supported on the KX3, KX7 and KX10 in-wall touch panels, the CX7 and the upcoming CX10 countertop/under-cabinet touch panels, as well as RTI’s flagship T3x which offers the maker’s first video intercom-enabled handheld controller. Via a free firmware update, dealers can also take advantage of video communications on compatible devices that support H.264-based video intercom via SIP. These devices also support auto answer or ‘do not disturb’ modes, while a push-to-talk audio mode lets users communicate via voice only from device to device. “The demand for intercom continues to increase and we are pleased to add video functionality across a range of RTI devices,” says Mike Everett, vice president of global sales for RTI. “Our line-up of video intercom-enabled controllers includes wired and wireless interfaces, which allows our dealers to offer their clients convenient communications between their RTI devices and third-party door stations.” “Door entry is a new area for RTI and for many CI dealers,” adds David Meyerowitz. “IP based door entry solutions have opened the door for CI dealers where traditionally the security contractor would have dealt with this. Door entry is a valuable revenue stream and with the addition of the SIP video and audio integration from RTI and our partnership with Comelit, installers can offer an end-to-end automation and entry solution for their customers.” On the hardware side, products that support the new video intercom function like the KX10 in-wall and CX10 countertop/ under cabinet user interfaces both feature larger fully customisable 10in LCD touchscreens along with direct control options and HD video capabilities via the HDBaseT video input. The CX10 is designed for flexibility, enabling it to be set on a countertop or inverted and mounted under a cabinet with a wide tilt range to provide flexibility of viewing angle. Draper is one of the companies helping installers increase options in terms of coping with ambient light

The Complete Picture Daniel J Sait takes a look at the fast developing world of projectors and screens. Distributor AWE is one of the companies which has enhanced its offering of late with an expanded product line-up and its own demo facilities. The company exclusively distributes fixed and tab tensioned electric Draper projector screens in the UK which offer ambient light-rejecting fabric making them strong home cinemas performers, particularly where a complete room blackout is either not possible, or not desired. The Clarion fixed screens are available as standard in a range of sizes, from 92in to 133in and there are also Adaptive tab-tensioned electric versions ranging from 86in to 104in with bespoke sizes available on order.

On the Clarion fixed frame version, a black Vel-Tex covered aluminium frame forms an attractive 3.8cm border around the screen. Without the need for snaps or tools, the fabric attaches to the frame to form a smooth viewing surface. The VelTex finish eliminates reflections on the silver/grey screen which has the same 1.0 gain as a matt white screen. As well as ReAct technology, Draper also offers other fabrics including Matt White and acoustically transparent NanoPerf. AWE’s offering in the projector sector is spearheaded by Epson, a partnership with will be available to experience at EI Live! on May 10-11 at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey.

DID YOU KNOW: Disney turned down the chance to make Back to the Future saying the mother/son relationship was too risqué

The BenQ brand is now part of the Pulse Cinemas family with its 4K W11000 and W12000 models

Epson now offers High Dynamic Range (HDR) with the EH-LS10500 which also offers 3LCD reflective panels, 4K-enhancement, a laser light source and support for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and other HDR sources. Created for a dedicated home cinema environment, Epson’s 3LCD reflective panels and the dual laser light source are designed to deliver a wide colour gamut and absolute blacks. A high aperture and high-speed motion response are included to help with sharp and detailed images. As well as offering 4K HDR, the machine can enhance 1080p content and also offers ISF calibration. Utilising the laser light source also means that it can achieve a wide colour space, covering RGB, DCI and Adobe RGB. The dual laser light source also delivers 30,000 hours in Eco mode a stat that Epson says is equivalent to watching one film every day for 46 years. Start-up time is quoted 20 seconds from off to full-colour performance. Installation is also assisted with what Epson says is an almost silent fan and a wide lens shift for off-centre positioning. The package is completed by AWE with the provision of its Designing an Immersive Home Cinema course, part of its Smart Home Academy, a complete grounding in design and installation. Amy Madden, residential technology manager at Draper is keen to further underline the importance of the screen: “It’s key to push how a projection system makes the experience more immersive and to educate the consumer on how the screen contributes to that. And it’s about more than just size. It’s also about contrast, colour, resolution and sound. With 4K projection and the increased colour space and contrast of HDR, the screen needs to be able to perform at the same high level. “Having screens that are ISF certified for colour accuracy guarantees a screen is up to the task. It’s also important to look at true ambient light rejecting screens to open up the possibilities of where the screen can be located and increase the ways it can be used. Another interesting point is audio. With screens, we can perf the material and hide the centre speaker directly behind the screen.” On the tech front, Draper also points to its brand new TecVision CH1200X ALR, a grey surface with an ALR rating of 20, meaning 80% of ambient light is rejected. A higher 1.2 gain is in place to help brighten the image and the material is available as a nanoperfed acoustically transparent solution.

Laser projector 4K enhancement technology HDR and UHD BD support Wide lens shift

Pulse Cinemas naturally has plenty to say on this subject, with company MD, Mike Beatty arguing: “It’s clear that while certain sectors of our industry are struggling to find traction, cinema is continuing to prosper. Screen Research sales across the U.K and of course the world are a good indication of the health of the cinema market. Having product ranging from affordable fixed and motorised to more elaborate masked screens for dedicated theatres, show us one thing; more than ever clients are choosing to watch movies in the comfort of their own homes, rather than sharing the experience with the public. “Our next and much-awaited update at Pulse Cinemas HQ comes in the way of the most beautifully designed flex cinema. The furniture is being built and the room is designed to order. We promise it’ll be worth the wait! We have a few surprises being installed into the room, sitting alongside our trusted Kaleidescape movie server, Screen Research Decor-mask and 4K projector, along with some beautifully designed furniture. We will be incorporating the very finest cinema performance, with the addition of James Loudspeakers!” Look out for more news on this new partnership in the coming weeks. As well as Screen Research, a Pulse brand since 2004, offering many custom options, Pulse back this up with its own service and after sales support to complete the picture. Ian Bolt, CSS MD, says: “Knowing these guys have been here before and have massive experience in the world of custom install gives our company the certainty required when taking on the projects we do. We can’t afford to take chances specifying brands with unknown credentials.” World sales manager for Screen Research, Maximilian Ramp, adds: Screen Research have distribution across the world, but Pulse Cinemas has been the company’s top performing distributor ever since it took control over ten years ago. We are proud to be working alongside such a dedicated and professional partner.” Kapes Patel, Pulse Cinemas technical director and partner at Pulse, points out: “Distribution can be misunderstood by many trying to mirror our model. We have a strong team at Pulse, looking after our dealers’ every dilemma. Importing products and adding a margin isn’t what our dealers are looking for; they need to know we have their backs and will drop everything to support an effortless installation.” Pulse is also keen to announce that the company now has a conclusive range of projectors about to be installed at the dedicated demonstration facilities. The Digital Projection range of 4K projectors are now joined by entry level 4K from BenQ, in the form of the W11000 and X12000. Both home cinema projectors produce 8.3 million distinct pixels (3840 x 2160) for strong clarity and 50,000:1 dynamic contrast. BenQ says the W11000 is the world’s first THX Certified DLP 4K UHD home cinema solution with Rec.

709 colour accuracy, whilst the X12000 offers customers a good balance of high brightness from Philips ColorSpark HLD LED technology with accurate colours from DCI-P3 colour gamut and BenQ-exclusive CineamticColour Technology. Both include horizontal and vertical lens shift. Screenline, available in the UK from Impact Screen Solutions, offers a wide range of projection screens suitable for residential projects including surface mounted electric screens, in-ceiling (recessed) electric screens and fixed frames for dedicated cinemas. Brand new is variant of electric screen, the Wave Tensioned Plus, a high-end designer electric screen which features an attractive case, hidden wall mounts and fast, but quiet operation. It also features a nice detail where the motor slows at the end of its drop and also as its closing as the weighted bar reaches the case, bit like a soft-close drawer. The screen is available from 6ft to 13ft and can be ordered with the company’s 4K HomeVision matt white, Grey high contrast or micro-perforated materials. These screens are made to order and have a lead time of three weeks.

Distributor Invision is currently highlighting the abilities of the Nero 4 from SIM2, a single-chip DLP UHD machine. Featuring Texas Instruments’ DLP 4K UHD chipset, the maker says NERO 4 delivers high brightness (up to 5000 ANSI lumens light output in hi-bri mode) driven by a new 450W lamp and an accurate, vibrant colour palette. The machine also has high-precision and resolution optics and SIM2’s own video processing technology. SIM2 has also provided a high-precision telecentric optical system. The pure-glass lens provides a resolution of 93 lines per millimetre to guarantee strong on-screen clarity. Installation aids include motorised zoom and focus, plus optical lens shift to adjust the position of the image up to 70% vertically and 30% horizontally. NERO 4 also includes Perfect Fit, a programmable zoom, focus and lens shift feature which facilitates a lens-free option to create 2.40:1 images. This beamer also offers Live Colors Calibration 2.0 software. Often seen as offering potential in the home, short throw tech has never really caught on away from commercial settings, however, SIM2 is looking to change that with its xTV product. xTV fits comfortably on a table, ceiling or flush mounts into joinery which can be placed right up against the wall or screen to be used, offering an interior friendly solution. From just a few inches away from the screen surface, an image as large as 110in can be delivered. Sim2 says a special lens makes xTV highly adaptable to different environments backed up by its fully digital approach using LASER hybrid illumination and DLP. The machine can deliver 2,900 ANSI lumens light output. Invision is also a fan of the JVC DLA-Z1 which uses a native 4K D-ILA device and a laser light source called Blu-Escent, which offer a brightness of 3,000lm which also has dynamic light source control and 20,000 hours operational lifetime. A lens developed specifically for this machine is in place to deliver a vivid 4K picture assisted by a Cinema Filter with wide colour gamut. The new D-ILA device developed for this machine has narrowed the pixel gap by 31% against former devices to 3.8 μm, realising a 4K (4096x2160 pixel) picture from what is claimed to be World’s smallest 0.69inch device. Further, by using both vertical orientation technology and planarization technique, unnecessary scattering and diffraction of light has been decreased to realise high contrast ratio. DLA-Z1 uses three of these 4K D-ILA devices, each device dedicated for the colours Red, Green and Blue. This latest releases from JVC increases its reach to much larger screens over 200in and raises the peak brightness on HDR picture to deliver more depth. Performance is also enhanced via the Laser Diode as the light source, light output can be controlled instantly compared to the conventional mechanical adjustment (lens aperture) which is slower. The rear intake/front exhaust can flexibly adapt to the various environments of installations and to ensure long term use, it employs a professional level air filter which can withstand challenging conditions.

DID YOU KNOW: The original script for Ghostbusters was set in a future where Ghostbusters were everyday figures like paramedics and firemen Panamorph lenses available from Habitech deliver the director’s vision direct into the home

Also available from Invision is Screen Innovations (SI), perhaps best known for its Black Diamond, ambient light rejecting tech promoting the ability to offer cinema is a wider range of conditions and rooms. Key products include the 7 Series Zero Edge in Black Diamond, which combines another key technology from the company with the Black Diamond material. Available in custom screen sizes and configurations up to 150in, the set up is designed to offer a very price competitive solution when compared to super larger TVs. SI also offers Slate, a lower cost alternative to Black Diamond which can deliver a 200in screen in standard sizes, larger on request. More recently the company has announced acoustically transparent versions of its Slate and Pure screen platforms. “We created Slate AT and Pure AT to give our customers the best of both worlds; the best picture and the best sound,” says Ryan Gustafson, CEO of SI. “Pure, and Slate have solved the problem of image quality with the sharpest image reproduction in the market by managing the texture pattern down to nine times finer than standard white or grey materials, maintaining image uniformity. Merging Slate and Pure with our acoustic perforation technology has truly created the best of both worlds, picture and sound.” Habitech is another distributor which has seen the opportunity in the home cinema market increase. As well as also offering access to the DLA-Z1 from JVC, The company partners with Projecta HD Progressive Screens to deliver a platform worthy of the JVC’s abilities. In order to accurately reflect the smaller 4K pixels, screens need to be microscopically uniform. Habitech says Fibreglass, woven fabric and conventional vinyl surfaces are too ‘bobbly’ for the job, whereas Projecta’s HD Progressive vinyl screen surface is designed to be consistently more even, presenting each incoming pixel with its own mirror-flat launch-pad meaning each pixel is resolved back undistorted. Multiply the result by eight million (8,847,360 to be exact) and viewers get 4K in full effect. Habitech is also keen to ensure widescreen is not forgotten, with around 70% of major motion pictures produced in a format about 35% wider than standard 16:9. To cope with the aspect ratio of about 2.30:1 and higher and avoid the dreaded black-lines some systems use to cope, Panamorph lenses are on hand to help. With a series of UltraWide lens options for Epson, JVC, Sim2 and Sony projectors, Panamorph can remove the black bars from UltraWide screens, reactivating wasted pixels to realise the full resolution of 1080 or 4K projectors

4K-enhanced home cinema 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio Fully motorised optics Wide lens shift

and display UltraWide movies in their original format. Worth noting is that most standard 16:9 screens wider than three metres cannot easily be installed in UK homes due to ceiling height restrictions. Quite apart from giving home cinema enthusiasts the real deal when it comes to aspect ratio, installers can choose UltraWide screens to overcome this physical shortcoming. In these situations, Panamorph lenses are key. Shannon Townley, CEO and president of Stewart Filmscreen explains: “As our industry goes into a dynamic, highresolution, high-performance phase it’s exciting to see technology evolving to meet demand and to meet future needs. Within the AV integration community, commercial and residential boundaries are increasingly converged, which is creating incredible opportunities for integrators to deliver an exceptional entertainment or viewing experience. Stewart Filmscreen has helped deliver those experiences day in, day out, for 70 years and we take great pride in working closely with our partners to help them exceed their client’s expectations while delivering the seemingly impossible. “We urge our partners to see the future and be the future; deliver the exceptional experience your clients deserve. As we say at Stewart Filmscreen, our products enable our customers to deliver unrivalled image fidelity that makes memorable, exceptional experiences possible for any application imaginable.” On the technical front, the company has developed Phantom HALR, a high ambient light rejecting projection screen material that delivers image fidelity and uniformity, designed to resolve the dilemma of where a system can be placed and still deliver the performance needed. Screens made of this material, however are not just about rejecting light, they can be created in sizes up to 40 feet tall and 90 feet (12.1-meters by 27.4-meters) wide without a seam, something the maker says is unique. Phantom can also be perforated for acoustic transparency, which includes Stewart Filmscreen’s proprietary Cinemaperf or exclusive Microperf X2 THX Ultra technology. Shannon adds that as 3D surround sound systems become more prevalent, choosing a screen with highquality, effective perforation patterns becomes even more important. Lots of technical movement at the moment means companies need to move fast to take advantage, Shannon argues: “REC 2020 Color Space and High

DID YOU KNOW: Ronald Reagan was originally announced as the lead for Casablanca

Dynamic Range (HDR) will have the most impact on the industry. REC2020 colour space defines the specification that has been set for UHDTV and it covers a large percentage of the full XYZ colour space. Currently, a few display technologies are coming to market that are REC2020 complaint, but this will ramp up quickly over the next couple of years. HDR removes the limitations presented by older video signals and provides information about brightness and colour across a much wider gamut range. Stewart Filmscreen is looking to capitalise on these two technologies by providing projection screen materials, which are future-proof and able to handle both of these technologies.” On the beamer side of things, Shannon argues: “The most recent significant development in the projection and two-piece projection categories are laser and ultra-short throw (UST) projection technology. Laser projection can create whatever wavelength of light you want (within reason, of course). So expanded colour gamuts are possible without brightness issues. This means deeper, richer colours that come closer to the vast range of colours our eyes can view. UST projectors allow two-piece projection to be used in pieces that were not possible in the past due to throw distance limitations. A projector can be placed a few feet away versus 10 to 20 feet (or 3 to 6 meters) away. Two-piece projection is possible in almost every available space now. We are developing new projection screen materials to complement these new technologies and to create a fabric that is able to go above and beyond the current offerings in the market.” The brand is available in the UK from Custom AV Distribution, company founder, Jamie Pullen, says: “When we started Custom AV Distribution, we wanted to work with the very best products within cinema and multi-room applications. Stewart is recognised as the benchmark in engineering and custom solutions. Their new innovative Phantom HALR blew us away at ISE. We are very proud to represent them here in the UK. Come and see us on Stand 96 at EI Live! on 10-11 May at Sandown Park.” Distributor Karma-AV took a look at what was on offer to the UK market in terms of screens and decided it needed to create it’s own with the Ultimate Screens concept. The range offers easy-to-install fixed-frame screens combined with upfront pricing devoid of hidden costs. The range comprises acoustically-transparent screens in standard sizes and in both 16:9 and 2.35:1 aspect ratios. Bespoke Fixed Frame screens will also be available on short lead times. Many brands require the screen to be attached to the frame and tensioned face down on the ground, risking damage to the velvet frame and screen material, the approach here is to allow this process to be completed in four simple stages after the frame is attached to the wall. Screen features include advanced 4K acoustically-transparent screen material and a tactile ultra-black surround, with high-quality light absorption for strong contrast.

Karma also offers an option when 4K is not considered necessary or the cost is prohibitive, via the Vivitek range of full HD beamers. Offering clean, stable margins, with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio, combined with 2,000 ANSI lumens and RGBRGB colour wheel, it’s an option worth bearing in mind. Vivitek’s HD5098, for instance, can be installed on the ceiling with a choice of five different lens options and includes VividMotion technology that allows the smoothing of the picture during fast pan movement. This summer will see the launch of Optoma’s two 4K flagship projectors, the UHD60 and UHD65. Both projectors will have the same zoom range (1.6x), wide throw ratio (1.35~2.22:1) and +15% vertical lens shift, with the UHD60 in white and UHD65 in black. The UHD65 will include PureMotion frame interpolation to achieve 100% Rec. 709 colour reproduction. Brightness will be confirmed when the final production models are received, but the preliminary specification for the UHD60 is 3,000 lumens and UHD65 is 2,200. The UHD65 is designed for dedicated rooms, while the brighter UHD60 is designed to cope with higher ambient light conditions. Optoma will also be launching the GT1080Darbee projector with DARBEE Visual Presence, the second in Optoma’s DARBEE range. DARBEE technology is designed to deliver increased levels of depth and realism. The GT1080Darbee is a short throw projector which offers 1080p resolution, Rec. 709 colour, dual HDMI ports, 3,000 lumens of brightness, 25,000:1 contrast ratio and can project a 100in image from just over a metre from a screen or wall. It also features a new Enhanced Gaming Mode with 16ms response time.

Habitech will welcome the Arcam brand to its family at the show

WyreStorm will be well represented at the show

uControl is the company’s whole-home AV control system, available at no additional cost, no additional hardware and no special programming training course required. The App is included free with MHUB 4K PRO matrix models. This is made possible via a link with the HDA Cloud and integrated patent-pending IP2IR technology. Setting up uControl requires no programming, there is no network searching and no complex config. Intelligent button layouts mean that the uControl interface will redraw itself depending on the device being used. For example, if you are using a small mobile phone then uControl will display only the most important controls, whereas a large tablet will have them all. It can also be personalised with user-settable zone background images. Also new is The Installer Network which offers a platform through which companies can market their installation company, its services and past projects, directly to end-users living within thirty miles of a company’s location. The Installer Network is designed to make installers more visible to individuals actively seeking to have an HDA system installed. Visitors will be able to visit the ‘HDA Cube’ for a live demo of brand’s newly updated RMS and see the remote management tools available via the HDA Cloud. To be entered into the draw to win the wrap, installers will be asked to perform three tasks via the RMS and to successfully add a new source device into a uControl system. Access the HDAYWHERE Cube through Stand 8. Check out more detail on HDANYWHERE’s offering on page 66 of this issue. Habitech is planning a big show, check out the dedicated editorial on this on pages 16-17. However, the headline stuff is the company’s big announcement that it is to enhance its home cinema offering with the addition of the Arcam brand to its lineup. Included in the new profile will be ARCAM’s ‘FMJ’ range of stereo and AV receivers, processors, players and power amplifiers, which Habitech says provides integrators with the opportunity to unite versatile power with the latest processing technologies for seamless UHD AV in virtually any environment. Combined with quality playback, all FMJ control products have the ability to integrate with home automation systems through drivers for Crestron and C4.

The other big announcement at the show will be the opportunities presented by the Simple Control platform the latest addition to the company’s ProNet group of brands. Simple Control is a cloud-based control system communicating over Wi-Fi using IP and Habitech believes it has a huge future delivering very simple control of many products including the Amazon Alexa platform. Simple Control is designed to work over an ‘open’ Appbased environment on iOS phones and tablets, using IP control functionality that already exists. Making use of the growing number of products with an IP address, the system connects over Wi-Fi to the cloud via a control App bringing disparate products together. IP, serial and IR libraries provide pre-loaded and pre-designed graphics, protocols and control codes for tens of thousands of devices. Working with other Habitech brands such as networking specialist Ruckus and through IFTTT Applets, the distributor says it can bring Alexa voice control skills to any system. Ultimately, the aim of Simple Control is to simplify the whole process of creating a whole house automation system and offer remote access to boot. Other Habitech highlights will include Wyrestorm’s new H2x line. A step-up from previous H2 range, H2X includes both 16x16 and 10x10 models, with HDBaseT outputs distributing 2160p transmissions at 4:2:0 8-bit @ 60Hz or 4:2:0 10-bit HDR (BT.2020) @ 24Hz to the new super-slim H2X balun for full compatibility with the latest 4K UHD content, source and display devices. Both Wyrestorm H2X models provide full-range 4K UHD HDMI 2.0 inputs and mirrored HDMI 2.0 outputs, expanding their 4K distribution capabilities to 16x16+16 (MX-1616HDBT-H2X) and 10x10+10 (MX-1010-HDBT-H2X). Qmotion’s innovative wireless shade designs will also be on show offering long battery life (up to five years). Just like a spring-assisted garage door, the energy is shared between raise and lower for a smooth, efficient, near-silent action. See it all on Stands 34-42. A big part of the show is always the AWE village which will be located on Stands 51-55, 58-60 and 65. One of the highlights of the show will be a range of new products from the Denon Heos platform. These will include the new HEOS Bar, described as a superb soundbar that delivers exceptional performance, and HEOS Subwoofer. AWE will also showcase the unique HEOS AVR, which provides the ability to deliver a surround sound experience without many of the usually associated cables.

Home theatre fans can check out Atlantic Technology and Earthquake brands, including the latest additions. Atlantic’s dedicated Dolby Atmos/DTS:X object based audio in-ceiling speakers and Earthquake’s compact in-wall LCR will be on show. From Yamaha, the latest addition to its MusicCast products will be presented. The team at Antiference (Stand 49) will be delivering new products that provide solutions to solve a number of problems. First up, a feature-packed HDMI modulator designed to fit with SKY Q (compatible with 1080p resolutions only at this time). With SKY Q the question for many is ‘how can I now distribute the SKY Q box to other rooms and maintain the same control I had with my old SKY box?’ The new Conexer DMHD01R features an HDMI loop-through enabling it to be connected to a local TV set (or extender or matrix) and the all-important IR control facility. Based on the SKY magic eye system, the modulator enables control of a source over the modulated coax distribution system. This is ideal for SKY Q (which has no RF or iO link control on-board) or any other non-SKY source device. A transmitter sensor (supplied) can be connected to the modulator, fixed on the front of the source and using an Antiference Remotelink or 75 Series by-pass amplifier and standard magic eye, the user is able to control the source through the modulated system in multiple locations; using the existing infrastructure in most cases. Another new feature on the DMHD01R is a USBbased record/playback function, useful for signage solutions. With a USB 3.0 stick or hard drive, files can be instantly recorded or played-back over the DVB-T transport stream meaning information can be supplied to the screens in the system. Also included is a scheduling facility allowing the user to pre-schedule playbacks or recordings or to play/repeat at certain times of the day or night. For TV sets which are not compatible, Antiference has developed the DIGIBOX, a DVB-T/T2 receiver with a media player. This compact unit is compatible with all Antiference modulators where some TV’s may not be. It can be connected to the TV set via HDMI or CVBS and slipped behind the TV set; leaving only a simple control sensor in view. A quick, cheap & neat solution solving a common problem. Teleste will be showcasing its own hospitality portfolio on Stands 4 and 5, which provides innovative, easy-to-use solutions for HD distribution and IPTV delivery. The company offers cost-effective choices for utilising the existing coax TV distribution cables, to bring high-speed Internet access and Wi-Fi to every room. Teleste will also be showcasing the latest in UHD matrix and distribution from both ZeeVee and PureLink.

ZeeVee’s ZyPer4K supports the distribution of ultrahigh definition, uncompressed 4K content, audio and other data signals using off-the-shelf 10 GB Ethernet switching technology. PureLink products are designed to ensure that whatever the application there is a solution ready to deliver full 4K and UHD signals. Teleste’s automation abilities will be demonstrated by Demopad’s bespoke software solutions and hardware integration services. The distributor says the CENTRO 8 represents a quantum leap in home automation, bringing advanced automation capabilities to the masses, with an affordable control processor and embedded software. Also on show will be Legrand’s capable automation brands Arteor, Vantage, NuVo and Bticino. Always a busy stand at the show, Blustream has got off to a strong start for 2017 with the launch of several new video distribution and control solutions. Visitors can expect exclusive hands-on access to the maker’s Multicast UHD Video over IP distribution solution, the new Blustream Multi-Room Control App and the latest Custom Pro HDBaseT Matrix. Blustream says its Multicast Video over IP solution has given installers a new offering of HDMI distribution over a 1GB network. Multicast is designed to deliver virtually latency-free distribution of visually lossless media at resolutions that exceed the capabilities of HDBaseT, all in a modular format that allows for easy adds and changes. Interactive tutorials will be taking place to get to grips with the product features and configuration. Blustream now also offers two dedicated control Apps that increase the capability of its products. Control and configuration of matrix products, with intuitive control of third party sources and displays has never been simpler, says the company. Blustream says the new Custom Pro matrix achieves new levels of performance and flexibility to the market and installers can now specify the I/O structure and select the relevant control and signal routing features as required for each individual project. Check it all out on Stands 136-138. Sunlight Solutions (SLS) is hoping to impress with the company’s brand new product; a range of attractive, bespoke hand-blown glass chandeliers designed and produced in the UK. Building on over thirty-years’ experience of working with blown glass, the Chandeliers are illuminated by LED modules and can be white, warm white, colour tuneable, RGB or RGBW, and can also be controlled in a number of ways. Each piece can be controlled together so that the whole Chandelier is the same colour or SLS can enable a unique amBX experience, where the company designs the chandelier to be divided up into different sections; allowing for lighting effects throughout the length of the chandelier. The lights can be controlled to music or video feeds or a specially designed ambient light scene can viewed in the chandelier. Find out more on Stand 143.

FS Cables will help solve your cable headaches

The FS Cables team would love to see you on Stand 25 to chat about the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and how it will affect you. From July 1, 2017, most of the cables installers specify should be tested for compliance with the new CPR law. The TruHD HDBaseT-Recommended Cat 5E, Cat 6 and Cat 6A cables are now CPR-compliant. Take the opportunity to speak to the guys and ensure that you are ready for the change. Installers of audio equipment will be interested in the newly-launched 16AWG weatherproof speaker cables. These cables feature a clever water-blocking tape which, when in contact with moisture, swells to form a non-toxic jelly. This prevents water from travelling down the cable, making it particularly suitable for outdoor installations, while remaining clean and easy to terminate compared to jelly-filled cables. Visitors can also pick up a copy of the new Tru Home Automation & Building Control guide for the full range of high performance cables and connectors. These include lighting control cables for most popular systems, composite cables, fibre optic cables, HDMI leads, as well as cables for alarms, access control and internal and external security. Another very popular presence at the show is Artcoustic, this year on Stand 108. The company will be launching two brand new products exclusively at the show. The production version of the Performance PS2 Subwoofer will be playing on the stand, available and shipping the same week. Also, Artcoustic will have the first showing anywhere in the world of the new Target Mini SL loudspeakers. Artcoustic will also be showing some new colour techniques and finishes, as well as showcasing the high support available to its installer partners. North Building Technologies has built its reputation providing bespoke HVAC controls into the high-end domestic market and will be launching a new product at the show on Stand 45. North’s new product is called Smart Switch and is designed to deliver good looks and control functionality in one package. Featuring interchangeable faceplates, this wall-mounted touchscreen is available in a range of finishes and is configurable in thousands of colour combinations. Designed to cut down on wall-acne, the Smart Switch’s menus can be configured to display and control values in many thousands of systems via the company’s Commander controller including DALI, Lutron, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Honeywell, Crestron, Savant, Control4, KNX, BACnet and Modbus open standards. The design aim for the product has been to deliver simplicity, style, but offer intuitive operation, with users being able to operate the controller right from the off. The rocker switches play their part, as each one (situated either side of the display) resembles a light switch so users know how it work it right away. The switches provide a secondary benefit for customers who are less keen on using the touchscreen part of the product. Using the rocker switchers or touchscreen, Smart Switch is able to adjust the temperature, a light scene, blind position or functions like audio volume.

10th-11th May 2017, Sandown Park, Surrey. Sponsored by EI Live!.indd 45

The product has another trick up its sleeve, it is also a temperature sensor in its own right and can be situated right at the ideal height and position within a room to provide accurate and reliable readings. The unit can share its temperature reading with a North controller or any other HVAC controller or BMS. Smart Switch also has its own output to control an underfloor heating valve and a second input for a slab temperature. This means it can provide standalone control of a heating zone without any connections to an upstream device. The product can also form part of a wider network with other Input and Output (I/O) modules on a high-speed Zip network. North’s Zip modules include an expandable four zone underfloor heating controller, boiler controller and generic IO cards. The network allows many devices to be controlled over a distributed network (up to 1km long). TDI (Stand 17) is another show regular and will be showcasing a selection of installer-focussed AV solutions from brands such as Sanus, Samson, CYP, Platinum Tools and Dragons’ Den survivors, Syncbox. The company will be featuring all the latest info on the feature rich, CYP 4K HDBaseT matrixes with on-board audio distribution management, with the recent launch of the new 4x6 and 6x8 matrix units. TDI will also showcase the new Samson range of Premium Certified 4K HDMI cables, the cable with the official HDMI holographic label of authenticity for quality and performance. Samson’s latest range of CAT 6 cable with full HDBaseT approval will also be on show. As a distributor for Platinum Tools, installers can see also see full demonstrations of the new EzEX-RJ45 Crimp Tools, Dies, Connectors, Strain Relief and EZ-Data Locking Connectors, making CAT cable termination frustrations a thing of the past. Documentation expert designflow will be showcasing a completely new line-up of design packages. Stand 106 will host demonstrations throughout the show for dealers and integrators focusing on its latest proposal packages, as well as its all new site design, system design and handover packs. New proposal packages will consist of one, two and four proposals a month, including the powerful new add-on; positional drawings, all now available without subscription. The new site design packs will include complete wiring plans and full equipment elevations with mounting and back box information delivering a complete on-site wiring information pack. The new system design packs will include detailed rack drawings and full connectivity schematics, everything required for engineers to build from and programmers to program off. New handover books in A3 format, including information about the installer and system, are designed to put a powerful referral tool in the hands of each the client. A big supporter of the show, Rako (Stands 95 and 92) will be featuring a number of new lines including a new ‘Hub’ allowing IoT connectivity with links available for Amazon Echo, using Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Nest and IFTTT.

Rako is just one of the many, many companies launching new products at the show

The Sonos Playbar is just one of the many key products you can see on the Alltrade stand at EI Live!

46 | April 2017 EI Live!.indd 46

Also new is the RAK8, a more space-efficient and flexible centrally-wired installation option. Fitted in the same boxes as the standard RAK-4, the RAK-8 has eight outputs and can be fitted with any combination of four different types of plug-in modules to suit a variety of different loads. Modules for leading, trailing and digital dimming will be available, as will a module for curtain and blind control. The range of WLED products will allow Rako’s selection of CV (constant voltage) LED dimmers to be connected directly to a wired network. This means the wireless range does not need to be considered and full feedback and state tracking is present. Also featured will be a new screwless plate range in six finishes and new wired wallplates which have been redesigned to improve energy efficiency offering less than half of the previous wired keypad model. Monitor Audio (Stand 103) is yet another company showcasing new products at the show. “Over the last few months, our R&D team has been busy developing a range of new products,” comments Alex Emson, director of global sales and marketing at Monitor Audio. “We are looking forward to bringing these newly launched products, as well as existing product ranges, to EI Live! and discussing the features and benefits with visitors to our stand.” On display will be the latest product to join the Platinum II range, the PLIC II in-ceiling speaker, designed to combine high quality sound, ease of installation and discreet appearance, the speaker is suitable for newbuild and retrofit. Also featured will be the updated SB Soundbar Series, which now includes the SB-4 model, a visually balanced audio solution for 70in plus screens. This new product will sit amongst the other two passive soundbars in this range to showcase how they are a good audio match for 50in and larger screens. Monitor Audio will also be showing the new IV140 invisible speaker designed to deliver best-in-class audio performance in concealed inwall and in-ceiling applications. Outdoor audio will also feature in the form of the established Climate range that features three two-

way satellites and one single stereo weather-proof speaker. Visitors will also have the chance to familiarise themselves with the four in-wall/ceiling speakers that make up the All-Weather In-Ceiling Series. Rounding off the outdoor speaker offering is the Climate Garden System line up, which now includes the CLG160 satellite speaker. Featuring a super-discreet all-weather satellite/ subwoofer design, this range has been engineered for ground level installation. For home cinema installations the Platinum In-Wall II three-way reference architectural speaker system will be featured, offering its adjustable mid/high frequency driver array to deliver pin-point audio quality. This product will be complemented by the CP-IW260X and CP-IW460X in-wall speakers, which combine Monitor Audio’s drivers in compact three-way, five-driver configurations, built into closed-box designs. Alltrade will be following up several successful EI Live! shows in a row with an exciting range of products from both new and favourite brands. Premiering at the show will be the Maxx One CCTV range offering a comprehensive range of 4K, HD, TVI, TPZ and IP systems, including cameras, recorders, networking supplies and a big choice of CCTV accessories for every installation. The distributor says Maxx One offers great synergy with Alltrade, with both companies evolving from the satellite industry and specialising in helping installers gravitate into the custom installation, security and home automation sectors. Maxx One has built a reputation for product reliability over the last few years and its range of products from cameras to surveillance software is available through Alltrade’s trade counters or on-line ordering system. With summer arriving early this year, Alltrade has taken on the latest range of Niles Audio outdoor loudspeakers. Convincing geo-realistic rock speakers, single terracotta plant pot speakers and large terracotta planters with stereo output are ideal for hot summer installations in the garden. Niles says its range of Terracotta speakers are indistinguishable from standard planters and can be filled with live plants to complete the decor. The Niles outdoor range complements the company’s traditional install range of in-wall and in-ceiling loudspeakers, amplifiers and audio distribution products, also available through Alltrade. Keeping with the audio theme, Alltrade will also be showing off the full complement of Sonos wireless multiroom audio products including the new Playbase.

Completing a busy Alltrade stand, HDL’s range of smart lighting controllers, complete with a wide range of colour touch panels will be on show, along with HDBaseT distribution systems from Bluestream. Sanus wall mounts and brackets will be available to solve TV installation challenges, while Ubiquiti’s enterprise-class networking products will address domestic networking issues. Technical sales staff from Alltrade’s five trade counters will be on hand over the two days of the show. Pop along to Stands 111, 112 to meet the team and see Alltrade’s growing range of new CI products. David Baxter, CEO, Gallo Acoustics, explains: “Fifteen years ago my company brought a little know Californian loudspeaker brand to the UK and then a dozen other European markets. The brand was Anthony Gallo Acoustics. When the U.S.-based founders decided that they had taken the company as far as they could, and were looking for someone who might be interested in taking over the reins, they came to us, their longstanding European distributor. Despite interest from other parties, in July 2016 a deal was struck and the Anthony Gallo Acoustics brand was under our ownership. I’m pleased to say that our purchase is with the full ongoing support and goodwill of the founders, including Mr Gallo, who has indicated a desire to collaborate on future projects. Now headquartered in Lanark, Scotland, the re-branded, rejuvenated Gallo Acoustics is now open for business.” David adds: “EI Live! Live is the ideal opportunity to reintroduce the Gallo Acoustics brand to the CI channel in the UK. This will be the first time for many people to see our new brand identity, new colour finishes and improved mounting hardware and with attractive reseller margins and support, Gallo Acoustics is an ever better proposition than ever. Gallo Acoustics will be presenting the classic Micro and A’Diva satellite speakers, high performance Micro SE and A’Diva SE variants, the high performance, reference standard Strada 2 and recently updated TR3D subwoofer along with a range of flexible mounting options. EI Live! will also be the first place to discuss the new SPECTRUM bespoke colour service and to preview a range of ten new standard colour finishes. Staff will be on hand to demonstrate the full capabilities of the spherical loudspeaker range, showing just how good high-end audio can look and sound. Get the full SP on Stand 43. DLS of Sweden (Stand 48) will return to EI Live! showcasing the Flatbox range of on-wall loudspeakers and subwoofers alongside a full range of in-ceiling and in-wall loudspeakers featuring slimline magnetic grilles. Brand highlights include D-One, a slimline speaker which still packs a punch with up to 150W power handling, while exhibiting the natural, organic acoustic qualities that are a Flatbox trademark. Available in High Gloss finishes and with eight different coloured speaker grilles, the D-One can be tailored to enhance any interior.

The familiar Flatbox range, which has now grown to seven different variants, continues to provide a mix of audio performance and minimalistic style. Hanging on a wall like a picture, Flatbox installation is designed to be quick and simple and the flexibility of a large range of sizes means there are Flatbox speakers to suit any environment. The wall- mountable-, active subwoofer range provides additional low-end grunt where required. Flatbox loudspeakers and subwoofers are available in a choice of satin white or piano black finishes and each comes complete with black and white detachable grilles, providing an added element of visual customisation. The Flatsub Midi looks to deliver a subtle in-room presence whilst still delivering the low frequency performance required. By turning the Flatsub concept through 180° and mounting both the driver and the 150W Class D amplifier on the rear of the case, facing the wall, the Flatsub Midi was created to offer performance and style. Integration and connection is straightforward with lowpass filter, phase and volume controls, as well as low-level inputs and outputs. The Flatsub 8.2 takes things up a little, offering more power than previous models but maintaining the same on-wall form factor. The Flatsub 8.2 is suitable for both music and home cinema applications and a new Class D amplifier boasts 250W powering the 8in driver to offer a strong combination of definition and bass. Adding to the space saving qualities, another trick is the ability to hang the subwoofer horizontally or vertically. Connected Distribution is once again sponsoring the Formula One Time Trial Challenge at the EI Live! show. Find out what it is like to drive a Formula One car at speeds of 200mph and above. Throughout the show, visitors will have the chance to test their driving skills and nerves of steel, in the UK’s leading Formula One simulator. The fastest (and slowest) times will be displayed on the leaderboard and, at the end of the show, the driver with the fastest lap time will be rewarded with a prize from Connected Distribution. Who will beat last year’s winning time of just 45.542 seconds? Connected Distribution, exclusive UK distributor for Cabasse, France’s leading loudspeaker manufacturer and producer of high resolution multi-room streaming solutions, will present the winner with the fabulous Cabasse Stream 1. This all-in-one streamer, amplifier, speaker is the perfect introduction to the Stream range and the superb sound quality of Cabasse speakers - a range that includes in-ceiling speakers, high-end cinema in-wall speakers, lifestyle designs and the truly iconic flagship, La Sphère. The Formula One simulator car was manufactured at the world-famous Silverstone Circuit by Bob Salisbury Engineering, which has more than 15 years’ experience of building F1 show cars and simulators for many of the leading F1 teams, including BMW, Sauber, Virgin Racing, Red Bull Racing, Renault F1, Toro Rosso and Force India.

Essential Install | Pulse

Get The Pulse Package At EI Live! Both the W11000 and W12000 offer features such as lens shift for ease of installation

EI Live! will be the launch pad for a completely new offering from Pulse Cinemas as the company introduces home cinema packages which offer high-performance, but at a very competitive price point. Charlie McClarron, sales manager at the company, explains: “The idea came from us looking at our product portfolio and realising that we can put together some amazing cinema packages for even the smallest budgets. I think the dealers are going to be very surprised with how much it costs! We are also very confident that our competitors wont be able to put packages like these together, with the comprehensive nature and quality of product we are offering, at the price we are going to do it at.”

4K machines from BenQ are going to feature in Pulse Cinema’s new affordable project packages

But the company has promised that despite an aggressive price, dealers won’t miss out on making a profit. Mike Beatty, company MD, explains: “We want to provide new opportunities to our supportive dealers. We are still giving an impressive margin across the whole cinema system (the same they would earn if this was full price) to show everyone that Pulse can help with any cinema at any budget. “The market is seeing a lot of developer and MDU work at the moment, where budgets can be tight, so to help our dealers in this space we have come up with this concept, which still gives the dealers a great chance to upgrade the system further, but will still amaze the client when they hear what they are getting for their money.” Pulse argues that the time has never been better to attack the home cinema sector. Charlie says: “The home cinema market is doing very well at the moment. I believe that end users are starting to see the value of adding a cinema to their homes. I saw a report a few weeks back showing that adding a cinema to the home increased the value more than adding features like gyms and we would argue that the enjoyment factor for the whole family is way higher than other similarly priced home enhancements.”

Product focus

Anamorphic lens options will be provided by Prismasonic

Working in concert, BenQ and Prismasonic offer true home cinema at a price that will surprise

So what can dealers expect from Pulse Cinema’s new package deals? Projector wise, the company has included the new BenQ W11000 4K projector, the most recent addition to the Pulse family. Charlie explains “We have been incredibly impressed with these 4K BenQ projectors. It’s rare to see a range that offers an impressive specification like this; with an achievable margin to match and of course assurance that only our quality supportive dealer/installers will have access to the range.” Key features on the machine include a 2200 lumens rating, 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 1.36-2.03 throw ratio, THX certification, ISF certification, Rec 709 and obviously, it is 4K capable. For cinemas and clients requiring an Anamorphic lens, this will be provided by specialist brand Prismasonic. Charlie adds: “For the package we could have offered a basic prismatic option, but instead we increased the spec to the cylindrical option. The guys at Prismasonic offer some of the best lenses for the money, the quality of glass they use is second to none. We have seen so many projects recently, where dealers have just ‘zoomed’ the picture to give their customer a 2.35:1 image. Although it does the job, it does not solve the problem of black bars! “Let’s not forget, the black bars equate to around 30% of the overall image, so that takes up 30% of your light output! If you aren’t using a high light output projector, this can cause big problems. This is why we would always suggest using an anamorphic lens, as we are getting rid of the black bars, giving the DMD panel the full image and letting the anamorphic lens stretch the image accordingly.” So what about the rest of the product line-up? Well, for that Pulse is being a little more coy. Kapes Patel, technical director at Pulse, explains: “As for the AVR and speakers, we want everyone to come and hear what this system can do first, so we will announce this at the show. All the dealers need to know is that ‘bang for buck’ is seriously high!” So there you have it, you need to be at the show not only to find out which brands and products feature, but just how good the package can sound. That is not where the tale ends however, acoustic treatment is also included into the mix.

Charlie says: “Acoustic treatment needed to grow in popularity, there were too many projects that we saw that didn’t include any acoustic treatments, and they really needed them! With the addition of Vicoustic to our brand portfolio, we want to show everyone that acoustics don’t have to cost a fortune. We have bundles that include 64 panels which cost the dealer just over £300. “Vicoustic also offers us products like the VicWallpaper, for when clients don’t want to see any treatments, or the budget isn’t in place for stretch fabric. We want to give the dealers as many chances to improve the way the room sounds as possible. Vicoustic also gives us products to help build the room, helping the dealer stop sound travelling to other rooms within the house. No other company in the industry was offering this before, our dealers were having to buy products online, or from building and construction companies at standard RRP pricing, we now can offer all these at trade prices, to help our dealers achieve the margin they need.” So with this competitive price (to be revealed at the show) will Pulse still offer the same level of support? Mike says: “Of course, we will be offering design help to the dealers, speaker placements etc. Like always we want to make sure that every cinema sounds as good as possible.” Check it all out in Sound Booth Three at EI Live! The Rise Of The SDVoE Alliance One of the big stories to come out of this year’s ISE was the progress made by a new industry body, the SDVoE Alliance. Set up to promote the advantages of Ethernet and IP networks for video transport without compromise and latency, the group is looking to set a performance standard for AV over IP. Aquantia offers its chip sets as part of the future of AV distribution

Justin Kennington, president, SDVoE Alliance, says a no compromise future is possible

Justin Kennington, president, SDVoE Alliance, explains: “The Software Defined Video over Ethernet Alliance was formed around two central principles. It is now possible to take advantage of Ethernet and IP networks for video transport without the compromises to quality and latency that used be required. For this reason, the industry needs a performance standard for AV over IP. Also, because the network lets us decouple application from the infrastructure, the industry now needs a platform for creating software that takes advantage of this flexibility with new approaches to applications, as well as entirely new applications not previously conceivable. The Alliance seeks to address both needs by defining performance standards and offering a development platform for AV applications.” So far the Alliance includes AptoVision, Aquantia, Christie Digital, NETGEAR, Sony, ZeeVee as founding members. Contributing members are DVI Gear, Grandbeing and IDK. Arista, Aurora Multimedia, Cleerline, HDCVT, Techlogix, and Xilinx are adopting members. So what benefits and advances is the group looking to deliver? Justin explains: “Installers will benefit from our approach to make AV over IP devices interoperable and to guarantee a performance standard without the compromises to image quality traditionally associated with AV over IP. Further, training is a central goal of the alliance. There is a knowledge gap in our industry that must be closed before AV installers and designers can fully realise the gains that are possible with AV over IP. The alliance’s goal is to close that gap.” As one of the founding members and a technology company that EI has followed the development of closely, AptoVision, has a big part to play in the group. The company offers its BlueRiver technology, designed to allow installers and OEMs to replace proprietary AV matrix switches with off-the-shelf Ethernet networks that deliver better price/performance, flexibility and scalability. BlueRiver technology drives much of the uncompressed 4K streaming manufacturers are now able to offer via its BlueRiver NT+ Series of chipsets. Kamran Ahmed, CEO and cofounder, AptoVision, sates: “AptoVision’s BlueRiver NT+ chipset and BlueRiver API underlie SDVoE

technology, but that’s only one part of a total solution. The pro AV community needs confidence in the total system and the SDVoE Alliance members bring all the necessary expertise and products together, from chipsets (AptoVision, Aquantia, Xilinx), switches and storage (NETGEAR) to AV end points (Christie Digital, Sony, ZeeVee, DVIGear, Grandbeing, IDK, Arista, Aurora HDCVT and Techlogix).” Kamran argues: “The main technical advantages of SDVoE is that it addresses the full 7-layer OSI stack. It offers the simplicity of a complete top-tobottom solution, fully encompassing infrastructure, transport, processing and a simple control layer, while delivering zero-latency, uncompromised video over off-the-shelf Ethernet switches. It ensures substantial cost savings and greater system flexibility and scalability over traditional approaches.”

Essential Install | Smart Thinking: SDVoE Alliance

Kamran Ahmed, CEO and co-founder, AptoVision sees a strong future for his company’s technology

As for the future, Karman says: “Right now, all AV distribution applications that demand zero-latency, uncompromised video can benefit from SDVoE technology. The promise for the future lies in applications that can be built using the SDVoE API. I can’t predict what those might be, but with the hardware and software available under the SDVoE umbrella, innovators have everything they need to start creating. It’s all about designing awesome user experiences for mainstream and niche markets. “The SDVoE Alliance will provide ongoing education and training for systems integrators and installers in this new AV-over-IP paradigm. The initial SDVoE training sessions held at ISE 2017 were an overwhelming indicator the industry’s hunger for AV-over-IP knowledge and standards. We had 120 seats available across three sessions, more than 150 pre-registrations and over 200 people who took time away from the show floor to attend. The classes ended up being standing-room-only. In addition, the performance and interoperability standards that the alliance promotes will give AV professionals the confidence to deliver the flexibility, scalability and cost savings of Ethernet-based solutions to their customers.”

Aquantia Gets Acquainted

Amir Bar-Niv, vice president of marketing, Aquantia, explains his company’s role: “The combination of Aquantia’s AQcite FPGA-programmable Multi-Gigabit Ethernet PHY with AptoVision’s BlueRiver technology represents an industry milestone by providing the most power, size and cost-efficient implementation of the new SDVoE standard, to leverage the ubiquity of Ethernet. “SDVoE provides a solution to customers that would like to send HD uncompressed video over 10G Ethernet network and replace the costly, non-flexible, proprietary solutions exist today in the pro AV market. Being part of this alliance gives its members the opportunity to interact and work closely with companies that provide all the parts of the complete network solution.” Amir adds: “The founders and members of the SDVoE bring to the table the expertise of video transport and handling, definition of systems and solutions for the pro AV market, design and manufacturing of semiconductor products, network switches and management of AV network. All these are the building blocks for a complete solution for the pro AV market.

“The common factor for all these technologies is IP/ Ethernet. Being able to run uncompressed video, audio and other media over the most ubiquitous and well know network ever, provides many advantages related to cost, infrastructure, know-how, interoperability and time-tomarket. Over time, systems with more advanced features, over higher speed of Ethernet networks, will emerge. Installers will be exposed to all the available solutions and vendors that build the audiovisual-over-Ethernet complete network infrastructure. Laurent Masia, senior product line manager for smart switches, managed switches and modules, NETGEAR, explains that his company’s M4300-series, available for under $100 per port with a mix of copper and fiber ports, is ideal for SDVoE deployments. Laurent says: “NETGEAR commits to the SDVoE standard with 10G switch products that are easy to set up and use. Because NETGEAR was first to market with cost-effective 10G Web Managed (Plus), smart managed and fully managed switches designed for SMB customers, we believe we can accelerate professional AV transition to IP with SDVoE Alliance and our unique 10G switch portfolio, covering a large spectrum of applications. “NETGEAR 10G switch products in general are perfect for transporting SDVoE IP video streams with zero added frame latency and recognised reliability. Specifically, NETGEAR M4300 series is optimised for zero-touch installation and flawless SDVoE operation: all necessary Multicast Ethernet settings are already enabled out of the box and immediately operational.” Looking to the future, Laurent says: “With Software Defined Video over Ethernet, we already know neverseen-before professional AV applications will be allowed by the Alliance technology. And with future Ethernet speeds down the road, this technology will be able to scale well beyond current 10G and 4K HDR 4x4x4. The Alliance will drive AV transition to IP with standardised underlying 10GE technology and common API, for interoperable solutions amongst all members and uniform training. No more proprietary solutions!

For its part, ZeeVee’s ZyPer4K platform, built on SDVoE technology, distributes uncompressed, 4K video over a standard 10Gb Ethernet switch. Bob Michaels, president & CEO, ZeeVee, Inc explains: “The Alliance was established to assist (and in fact drive) the industry in the adoption and utilisation of standard

Ethernet technology to distribute AV signals. Our main objectives as an Alliance are to educate integrators and end users on the benefits of incorporating proven, cost effective and simple to use standard components and subsequently to provide training platforms to accelerate acceptance and use. “Standard Ethernet networks now can service the needs of AV distribution and do so with no significant compromise in the quality of the product streaming out the far end. The economics and that is the important thing, have ridden the volume curve. The applications are huge, the number of companies, products, and the amount of intellectual horsepower being dedicated to this problem are huge and that has spurred a very competitive marketplace where the cost curve – the dollars per bit per second – has exponentially decreased. We want the industry to take full advantage of the advances in data networking technology over the last three decades.” Bob adds: “Networking, Ethernet, the Internet and what used to be the domain of IT professionals in closed offices, has erupted into a mesh that wraps around everything we do. Everything is connected. This whole Internet of Things is just a label for the trend of connecting everything to everything; making it available, accessible and controllable from anywhere by any connected device, most commonly the phone in your pocket or the tablet in your bag.

“Standardisation is an absolute. AV distribution is, for the most part, still stuck in the place Ethernet and networking was 20 years ago; a mysterious art that only a few really understood. Many equipment providers have capitalised on that by crafting closed solutions to the problem of media distribution.” Bob argues: “The increasing ability to move enormous amounts of data quickly, reliably and efficiently anywhere on the planet has been staggering. The capabilities of a good, well-crafted, high-bandwidth, data network have now far surpassed the requirements for the problem of AV distribution. Our job and the job of the other members of this alliance, is to provide the technology that sits at the boundary of this hugely capable and evolving network cloud and provide the tools, technology and elements, so that ultimately it does look like plugging your satellite/media player into the network and your TV/ display to the other side and have media, in whatever form, pop out at the highest possible quality. “Our goal is to do this efficiently, simply and in as standard a fashion as possible, so that the consumer and user, need to be concerned as little as possible about the details of how it happens. The benefit to the ultimate customer is that the application can now be addressed by the ever-increasing capabilities and decreasing costs of modern data delivery. That will open up options, capabilities and competition that will keep cost and effort to deliver media on a more aggressive curve than it has ever been.”

Customer Interfacing

Daniel J Sait looks at developments in the main point of contact that users have with any automation system, the touchscreen.

New Desk top and wall mounted control options from URC in the form of the TDC7100 and TKP-7600

Distributor AWE took on the URC brand several years ago now and has seen the company transform its offering from a platform that looked and felt very ‘American’ to a much slicker proposition well suited to appealing to European tastes, particularly in terms of aesthetics. This transformation is perhaps best represented by the brand’s latest touchscreen releases with the TDC-7100 and TKP-7600 to work in concert with its Total Control automation platform. The TDC-7100 is a tabletop controller and the TKP-7600 an in-wall variant. AWE says the two new products focus on performance, design and efficiency. Designed to provide primary whole-house control of entertainment and smart home products, both feature a seven-inch colour touchscreen, built-in camera, microphone and AV intercom, making them suited for door integration, room to room and whole house communication. The tabletop controller includes an integrated charging base which means that this product is a good match for installation in the kitchen, bedroom or family room. As well as a wider gamut of control, the screens have received a speed upgrade, enhanced graphics and sensor-based wake-up function. With network cameras, the TDC-7100 and TKP-7600 can display live video for surveillance and both offer visual status feedback from URC devices as well as third-party products. More traditional looking and feeling controllers have not been abandoned altogether, however, as URC’s MX HomePro platform uses a remote control which will be more familiar to many AV users as well as an App for control via a smart handheld product. The MX HomePro is designed as a simple to set up single room control system and so needs a less sophisticated interface and has gone with a supplied remote. The system offers a cloud-based approach to control, but AWE is keen to point out this is not a DIY system, filling the need for an affordable, but professionally fitted system. The URC

MX HomePro offers users one-touch control of home entertainment and IoT devices, including lighting, thermostats, security cameras and Z-Wave products. The remote control features a two-inch colour LCD screen, connect via Wi-Fi or Ethernet to the system’s smart hub controller. The free to download MX HomePro App is also available offering smart device control at home or whilst out and about. For the installer, this system is extremely easy to programme and monitor. The MX HomePro offers dealers simple, web-based programming via PC, Mac or mobile and allows for servicing to be managed remotely. Limited training is required for the URC HomePro system, meaning companies can concentrate on project creation and cut installation time for smaller projects. On the control and programming side of Total Control, URC has introduced a number of new two-way control modules and has increased functionality. The additions have been designed inhouse at URC and are free of charge to installers who have purchased a URC system through AWE. First up, Total Control is now able to integrate with Amazon Echo so users can now control music, heating, lighting and more by voice. Security continues to be an attractive function for many consumers and so URC has also introduced a module for Doorbird door entry allowing consumers to control and view who is at the door. A logical step for URC was also to develop drivers for other brands in the AWE stable and so the system can now speak with window treatment brand QMotion. The URC platform now also features more reactive push notifications, geofencing and software scheduling. AWE continues to offer full technical support and training for the URC brand. All of the new URC developments can be witnessed at EI Live! in the AWE Village, come check them out on May 10-11, Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey.

DID YOU KNOW: By 2017, over a third of the world’s population is projected to own a smartphone with a touch-screen an estimated total of almost 2.6 billion

The Smart Switch offers attractive and capable control of HVAC and other systems too

The NuVo platform, available in the UK from Habitech, has also taken steps to upgrade its interaction with users with the P30 touchscreen. The maker describes the product as a fully functioning seven-inch Android tablet housed in a custom enclosure that runs the existing Player Portfolio App. The unit gives users the choice between handheld control via the Apps for Android and iOS or inwall use to suit all music listening experiences. In addition to being the access point for system control, the touchscreen will also run popular streaming services and Apps, including Spotify and Pandora. Users can also access and play music stored on networked devices in the home through the Player Portfolio system.

A brand new controller for the NuVo platform, the P30 can be wall mounted or hand-held

Walt Zerbe, Legrand’s product manager for audio, says: “The Nuvo P30 touchscreen and Player Portfolio App offer intuitive easy in-wall control of the whole home audio system. If you’re simply adjusting the source and volume for a relaxing night at home, or playing DJ for a gathering of friends and family, it’s right there. “The in-wall control option is especially convenient for muting or lowering volume quickly when there’s a knock at the door, or allowing immediate access to preset source favourites without searching for a phone or tablet.” The seven-inch touch panel has a decent contrast via its 1024 x 600 IPS capacitive screen and a design that looks to blend into a range of different style rooms. The maker says installation is simple using the included mounting plate and connection to the Player Portfolio system is made via a single RJ45 802.11af PoE connection. North Building Technologies has built a reputation providing bespoke HVAC controls into the high-end domestic market. The company has some exciting news with a fresh product release to be revealed exclusively at EI Live! DID YOU KNOW: Xxxxxx

Landing this June, a new portrait controller from Crestron, the TSW-560

thousands of colour combinations. What else makes North’s new product stand out from the crowd? James Palmer, business development manager at North Building Technologies, explains: “Smart Switch menus can be configured to display and control values in many thousands of systems via our Commander controller; including DALI, Lutron, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Honeywell, Crestron, Savant, Control4, KNX, BACnet, Modbus open standards and many others besides.” Ease of use has also been a big driver in the development. James explains: “Our over-riding design criteria were simplicity and style. Smart Switch has to look good, but also be intuitive. We were determined that the user wouldn’t need training to use it. The rocker switches play a big part in that, each resembles a light switch so you have an idea how it works before you even touch it. “The switches provide a secondary benefit in that many customers don’t like to use touchscreens and prefer something more tactile. Smart Switch can be controlled by its touchscreen or by the buttons alone. Being able to adjust the temperature, a light scene, blind position or even the audio volume from such a simple interface has not really been done before. Most systems that provide this level of functionality are large touchscreens often with complex menu structures.” Another neat trick the product offers is acting as a reliable and well-positioned temperature sensor. For aesthetic reasons sensors often end up being placed in locations that are far from ideal to take a good reading. James says: “Smart Switch solves this, as it’s a temperature sensor in its own right and will typically

be mounted at the ideal height. The unit can share its temperature reading with a North controller or any other HVAC controller or BMS.” Smart Switch also has its own output to control an underfloor heating valve and a second input for a slab temperature. This means it can provide standalone control of a heating zone without any connections to an upstream device. Smart Switch can form part of a wider network with other Input and Output (I/O) modules on a highspeed Zip network. North’s Zip modules include an expandable four zone underfloor heating controller, boiler controller and generic IO cards. The network allows many devices to be controlled over a distributed network (up to 1km long). Crestron has also been busy on the touchscreen front introducing its TSW-X60 Series. Crestron says this line combines high performance and high security with sleek design and an exceptionally intuitive user experience. This new generation of touchscreens are also designed to be faster and more powerful, with several new features. The fresh introduction includes an ‘ultra-fast’ processor offering enhanced control and navigation delivering a more responsive performance for areas such as homes, boardrooms and classrooms. For more public areas, Crestron says the TSW touchscreens provide enterprisegrade network security by leveraging existing corporate protocols, including 802.1X, TLS, FIPS-140-2, SSH, and SFTP. Backlit capacitive buttons on the screen border offer a further enhancement and deliver a sleeker look as buttons that are not in use effectively disappear.

DID YOU KNOW: Recent research shows that nerve endings in the fingertips perform neural computations that were thought to occur in the brain There is also a sensor on board which adjusts screen brightness and LED backlights automatically according to ambient light levels in the room. Also included is a built-in PinPoint proximity beacon which for commercial settings enables contextual room booking based on availability, size, location and purpose. Users when entering the room can then instantly connect to AirMedia for wireless presentation. All TSWs now also ship with a special mounting latch that makes it easy to lock touchscreens in place. Crestron adds that it was careful not to make any changes that would disrupt how installers operate now and commission TSWs. The styling and colours remain the same, as does power via PoE and easy mounting options. Going up in size to one of the biggest products of its kind on the market, the TS-1542 delivers a 15.6in full HD touchscreen display and high-performance digital graphics engine. Crestron says the design features premium metallic construction and edge-toedge glass for a contemporary look that will work for a home or corporate setting. Featuring enhanced Smart Graphics performance and dual-window HD streaming video display, the TS-1542 also delivers the abilities to control any function using voice commands, browse the Internet, annotate over a video image or whiteboard screen and communicate using built-in VoIP intercom and phone functions. Single-wire PoE+ connectivity and a choice of tabletop, wall, or VESA mounting options are available and standard finishes include either white or dark grey metallic, or choose the Signature Series option to design a unique custom finish. Despite its large screen, the unit is only 1-3/4 inches (45 mm) deep, so can be mounted in a wide choice of locations using the supplied wall mount kit or a thirdparty VESA 100 compliant mounting arm, bracket, or stand. A tabletop tilt model (TS-1542-TILT) is also offered, which features a smooth tilt base for use on a table, desk, podium, or countertop. Available from June will be a portrait oriented unit, the TSW-560P, presented as offering a clean, contemporary design highlighted by edge-to-edge glass and impressive colour graphics. Wall or lectern mounted, the TSW-560P has been created to be at home in residences or commercial settings with its portrait-oriented 5in capacitive touchscreen display with Smart Graphics and five softtouch buttons. PoE connectivity and a range of mounting options are in place and additional advanced features include the abilities to control any function using voice commands, view security cameras and other video sources, communicate using built-in intercom and phone capabilities, browse the Internet and enjoy full access to a Sonos system via Crestron’s native compatibility with the music platform.

Crestron has also been making a big noise about enhancements to its programming software. The new version of Crestron Studio has been specifically created to offer an approach where systems can be created more easily with less programming. This should mean either installers have the option of creating a straightforward system less programming than before, or they can go full out bespoke, but have more time to spend on the really personal touches as the all the basics are now faster and easier to create. With the new version of Crestron Studio, complete touchscreen interfaces, adding components and creating custom living solutions can all be done without having to write a single line of code. The new Crestron Studio is also fully compatible with Crestron Pyng software, so functionalities such as Pyng Smart Graphics software applications and Pyng Trigger/Listens can be added to Studio projects. Other new built-in functionalities include the native compatibility with Sonos mentioned above as well as new UI options which make it easier to create intuitive interfaces and keep them that way with regular updates. UK distributor Invision continues its support and supply of the RTI brand and recent additions look to address increased communication abilities. New video intercom support for select RTI controllers and thirdparty intercom-enabled devices, is billed as being ideal for front door access, security gates, intra-office and room-to-room applications. “The demand for intercom continues to increase and we are pleased to add video functionality across a range of RTI devices,” says Mike Everett, vice president of global sales for RTI. “Our line-up of video intercomenabled controllers includes wired and wireless interfaces, which allows our dealers to offer their clients convenient communications between their RTI devices and third-party door stations.” “Door entry is a new area for RTI and for many CI dealers,” says David Meyerowitz Category Manager Invision UK. “IP-based door entry solutions have opened the door for CI dealers where traditionally the security contractor would have dealt with this. Door Entry is a valuable revenue stream and with the addition of the SIP video and audio integration from RTI, installers can offer an end to end automation and entry solution for their customers.” RTI’s video intercom capabilities are supported on the KX3, KX7, and KX10 in-wall touch panels, the CX7 and the upcoming CX10 countertop/under-cabinet touch panels, as well as the company’s flagship T3x – delivering the company’s first video intercom-enabled handheld controller. Via a free firmware update, dealers can also leverage video communications on compatible devices that support H.264-based video intercom via SIP. These devices also support auto answer or do not disturb modes, while a push-to-talk audio mode lets users communicate via voice only from device to device.

DID YOU KNOW: Capacitive touchscreens are constructed from an electrostatic grid of tiny wires, each smaller than a human hair

iRemoteControl has been working on a new interface for the new Oppo 4K disc player

Offering a little more detail on some of the latest controllers, the KX10 in-wall touch panel, has been created to deliver an authoritative impression via its high resolution 10in display, which provides enough screen real estate to create a really bespoke feel for the client. The KX10 is also equipped with an HDBaseT video input for viewing HD video directly on the widescreen display. Ethernet connectivity means users can check security cameras and answer the door via the built-in intercom. Direct control can be via integrated IR and RS232 ports, or of course via integration with a full RTI system. This product currently supports VoIP intercom, with video intercom support to be added via future firmware update. Smaller in scale, RTI’s KX3 3.5in in-wall touch panel keypad with an integrated XP Control Processor is suited to homes, offices and conference rooms. The device combines the capabilities of an in-wall touchscreen interface and a control processor into a customisable cost effective unit. The KX3 also has a proximity sensor to wake up the unit as a user approaches and room status LEDs to indicate a room’s availability for a meeting. Installation flexibility comes from a number of features including wired 10/100 Base-T Ethernet and wireless Ethernet capabilities for viewing video from network cameras and performing remote programming updates. Also equipped with a control processor, future firmware updates will enable benefits such as direct two-way control via IP and RS232, as well as an astronomical clock for time-based events and an embedded 2.4 GHz ZigBee antenna for connectivity with RTI wireless remotes. Other features that will come as part of these updates, including six voltage sense ports, four relays and a camera to accommodate the integrated video intercom functionality. RTI is another company which sees value in offering cutting edge control, but in a more familiar handheld ‘remote control’ design with the T3x. The unit has a 3.5in flush-mount high-resolution touchscreen, fully programmable soft-touch buttons and grip sensors. An accelerometer, two-way control, WiFi and dual RF are also included as is haptic feedback on the touchscreen, giving the user a gentle vibration as confirmation of a button press. A built-in camera and microphone are also included providing video intercom support directly on the remote. For fans of off the shelf interfaces, iRemoteControl continues to offer some innovative downloaded solutions. Working with v6.0 of the system, installers are able to specify the products they need to control via the company’s online portal and receive a downloaded control solution and interface that is ready to rock. Recent updates include automatic satellite and Freeview channel updates meaning that through a flick of a switch users or installers can update the iRemoteControl software with the latest favourite channels for FreeView, Sky, Virgin and BT YouView.

As well as the ‘no programming needed’ aspect of the system, a popular feature has always been the virtual remotes which are already familiar interfaces. Recent additions include the new range of Samsung and SONY 4K Blu-ray players as well as the brand new flagship Oppo 4K player. The company has also developed a simplified online order form so that on average all the room information required to control room can be completed in under 300 seconds or five minutes per room. Crestron Helps Create A Shining Light On The Shores Of The Netherlands Take a look at this stunning and now award-winning lighting design using the very latest Crestron technology.

You don’t have to look far to find the reason why the Netherlands’ restaurant ‘At Sea’ in Dronten won the Best Lighting Application award at Crestron’s recent 10th Integration Awards ceremony. Sitting in a unique, waterfront location in Dronten, the stunning ‘At Sea’ restaurant boasts beautifully unspoilt views of the Netherlands’ sunset, authentic local food and faultless interior design that is perfectly integrated with Crestron technology. Every element of this unique restaurant has been thoughtfully created, with its location at the forefront of the design process. The Crestron-controlled lighting scheme has been designed to transport the diner into an ocean realm of splendour and the epitome of coastal dining. The space spoils visitors with sanded natural wood flooring, a stunning stained glass window, which beautifully spills natural light, blue wooden clad walls, that

mirror those of a beach hut, and solid reclaimed wood tables, which emulate the appearance of driftwood. The space offers an altogether exemplary atmosphere and user experience, cementing in some really special memories of a very unique place that is perfectly aligned with its surroundings. A team from acclaimed Crestron integrator, Morelight, welcomed the exciting challenge of designing and installing an innovative lighting control solution that provides the perfect accompaniment to the inventive and contemporary design plan. Ben van de Bunt, creative director, at Morelight commented: “We were absolutely delighted to be asked to help with this innovative project and knew that by using Crestron products alongside our creative lighting design we would be able to achieve a brilliant combination of creativity and technology.” They skilfully utilised the natural light available within the space and seamlessly complemented it with an inspiringly creative lighting scheme. Thanks to Crestron’s DINAP3 processor, efficient control of all track, pendant, LED strip and wall lights, are managed, with a number of scenes pre-programmed into the system. The ‘tunable’ luminaires are thus controlled to imitate the changing tones and colours of the sunset, and the system also cleverly embraces the natural light occurring outside within the restaurant interior. In doing this, the experience

of dining in this stunning restaurant evokes a feeling of being effortlessly in tune with its coastal surroundings. Dimmable pendant lights suspend impressively from the ceiling, which can be adjusted to accompany the rest of the lighting scheme along with the wall lighting. All the lighting features are perfectly placed, with each luminaire having a specific use in lighting a selected space. A large, perfectly lit, painting hangs from an interior wall, an instant eye-catcher as you enter the space. All in all, a total of 64 fixtures were installed into the space and, thanks to Crestron technology, each can be perfectly regulated to achieve any atmosphere and suit every occasion, and with only one touch of the pre-determined settings. To suit the interior style of the restaurant, Morelight has installed the space-saving TSW752 touch screen, featuring a clean, contemporary appearance with edge-toedge glass and advanced high-definition Smart Graphics™. On completion of the lighting installation the restaurant owner commented: “We could not be more thrilled with the lighting features that Morelight installed within the restaurant. They perfectly complement the design and really complete the space.” She continued: “The Crestron control panels are so incredibly easy to use and the ability to manipulate the light in order to mirror the sunset really is a very special addition” This project is a wonderful example of a successful fusion of creative design and Crestron technology within a commercial environment and pushing the user experience to the maximum. The screens can be viewed from wide angles and produce very little heat, so visitors can sit very close

Can We Kick It? Yes We Can! AVS Systeme AG’s Thorsten Molinari, explains how his company has created some kick-ass AV for the FIFA World Football Museum’s Sportsbar 1904. Thorsten explains: “AVS Systeme AG was established in 1994 with the mantra ‘the more complex your project, the keener our eye for detail’, a mindset we still hold when operating today. We specialise in the design, creation and installation of professional audio visual systems, including large format displays and sophisticated sound and image tools for professional presentation suites and conference rooms. This entails bespoke optical constructions and moving, mechanical brackets. Myself, head of corporate AV, Christian Rigert, service engineer and Bruno Epp, project manager, took leadership of this installation.

Before getting its teeth into this iconic venue, the company has been responsible for plenty of other top projects including transforming the University of Zurich’s large animal clinic lecture hall in its Vetsuisse Faculty by installing an audio induction loop system, a presenting station with multimedia connections, lighting, microphone and room control system as well as a projection booth to house a high-performance projector. As a result, the lecture hall (which seats 140 students) became an interactive, immersive learning environment, allowing lecturers to stream live animal operations and procedures to the students via the projector.

The museum also features a journey through world footballing history

Case Study.indd 69

But what about the venue for this latest AV adventure? Thorsten explains: “The highly-anticipated FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich is a three floor journey through the history of football, charting key moments in history and looking at cultural and social impacts of the game. Leading up to its opening, we were briefed with fitting an AV spectacular in every location to display impactful presentation systems, world first installations and real time multi lingual translation. ”The brief specified having the best products available in their class, from the high resolution displays to the largest bandwidth streaming systems. We obliged by securing the first installation of SiliconCore’s Lavender 1.2mm LED display with three 2400 x 1350 resolution screens. These feature the first front service access LED system to be installed with a pixel pitch this small.” Thorsten adds: “The Sportsbar 1904, located within the museum, quickly became a central hub of activity for both museum visitors and the general public, using the SiliconCore displays to showcase a complex range of content including up to 16 matches being streamed simultaneously. The screens needed to adapt to additional content such as FIFA show reels, advertising and presentations, as the layout of the space also needed to adapt and transform to accommodate evening conferences. “The design and placement of systems installed within Sportsbar 1904 have helped the museum maximise extra revenue opportunities. The space is predominately aimed at business professionals as the perfect location for daytime meetings and private hire for evening functions and can be transformed into a conference suite. FIFA also uses this for entertaining its VIP guests. The three-direct view SiliconCore LED displays create an immersive presentation environment and due to the seamless nature, there is no risk of crucial data getting lost in the bezel. The system enables the content to be updated easily by the in-house team, enabling additional revenue streams to be maximised through advertising by complementary brands.” Thorsten also explains that with a viewing distance of less than one metre, a 160° viewing angle and its seamless design, the displays were a good match for the project as close proximity viewing was an essential requirement with the bar seating literally inches away from the displays in order to maximise space in the area. To enable this, SiliconCore developed the first front service access solution for a pixel pitch this small, allowing the displays to be placed less than 200mm away from the back wall. Thorsten continues: “Sustainability and optimised total cost of ownership were big considerations for FIFA, which dictated all of the product specification for each gallery area. The SiliconCore LED Display was desirable as the Common Cathode technology reduces power consumption by 40%. All the projectors within the main museum are lamp-free, also saving power and significantly reducing maintenance with no consumables to monitor or replace.” SiliconCore’s Common Cathode also means very little heat is generated by the screens, so no additional cooling infrastructure is needed and visitors can sit near to the screens and stay comfortable. The maker also quotes an extended lifetime of 100,000 hours and a low maintenance requirement. Ease of operation was another crucial factor so AVS worked with Grassfish, specialist in digital comms systems for retails and visitor environments, to create an info system touchscreen control panel that grants access to

The spots bar is a focal point for the museum, particularly during game time

all museum wide solutions. This includes a digital signage function so that a scrolling banner for breaking news and other live messaging can be easily updated by the inhouse marketing team as they occur. Thorsten explains: “We developed a central management system to provide access to site wide AV equipment instantly from one space. Digital media playout is managed by a Pandoras Box Server and all visual systems are integrated with an Ocilion IPTV system to ensure the bandwidth of the Internet within the building was never compromised, even at high streaming times.”

The product customisation across the board was managed to very tight timescales from a flexible and dedicated team of suppliers, ensuring every element was perfect before arriving on site. As a result, the technical innovations of front service allowed for the best use of large display in this critical focal point for the museum. The ability to scale the displays allowed for flexibility and adaptation in design. The idea was to ensure that the technology is not experienced as an appendage to the environment, but rather the environment itself, becoming the visual walls that adapt to every unique environment the customer wishes to create. So what’s the most impressive part of the install now it’s all finished and working? Thorsten enthuses: “For both us and the client, the most striking technological feature within the museum is the Lavender 1.2mm pixel pitch LED display from SiliconCore. The museum is the first to feature these displays in the world and we are incredibly proud to help them in leading the way with new and innovative technology solutions. It is high end systems like this that set it apart from others and has seen Sportsbar 1904 quickly turn into a meeting point for all kinds of sport fans and business people during the day, beyond the parameters of a museum. “During live events like Champions League, Sportsbar 1904 is a crowd magnet and it bursts at the seams, so knowing that we can rely on the Common Cathode driven displays and that people can comfortably sit right next to them is ideal.” More Information: AVS Systeme AG +41 41 784 45 45, www.avs-systeme.com

BeoSound Shape is a new concept from Bang & Olufsen which delivers sound and acoustic treatment

Shape Up For Summer With Bang & Olufsen Bang & Olufsen dealers and installers have a new concept to offer fans of the brand with the launch of the company’s BeoSound Shape, a new wireless speaker system designed to offer quality sound with a unique, customisable design. The BeoSound Shape speakers offer a wall-mounted modular approach based on hexagonal tiles that can scale to many different sizes and configuration, acoustically and visually. Each BeoSound Shape tile consists of a combination of speakers, amplifiers and acoustic damper tiles that scale the sound performance and visual design of the system and can be carefully managed to match the space. Customers can also choose from an array of colours and textiles to suit their interior including Parisian Night Blue, Purple Heart, Infantry Green, Brazilian Clay, Wild Dove Grey and classic Black. For the customer who want to go a little further, the maker has worked with a Danish textile specialist called Kvadrat to also provide options in wool fabrics and colours in Brown, Moss Green, Pink and Dark Blue. All of the colours can be mixed and matched. The minimum recommended units per system is six, but the maker says the system is suitable for large multi-use spaces in homes and commercial settings such as hotels or showrooms. Bang & Olufsen says that it has created its own ‘up-mixing algorithm’ which is designed to create a crisp and precise soundscape with the vocal performer in the centre and the instruments to the sides. The company calls this approach ‘Band on the wall’, the idea being that the performer is in the room with the listener. An online design tool from Bang & Olufsen will be made available to both mix and match tiles and provide acoustic recommendations for optimal placement of the speaker tiles. To get the content to the speaker array, a BeoSound Core connectivity hub is hidden behind a hexagonal tile, enabling wireless streaming via AirPlay, Chromecast built-in or Bluetooth. BeoSound Core also includes multiroom functionality, making it part of the family of Bang & Olufsen and B&O PLAY products that can play different music in different rooms or have the whole system play the same content.

New Kaleidescape 1U+ Movie Server Launched

The new Kaleidescape 1U+ Movie Server comes with a three year (extendable) warranty

Available from Pulse Cinemas in the UK, the new Kaleidescape 1U+ Movie Server is designed to provide reliable storage for movies and music, even in the event of a hard drive failure. The new model is available with either 18TB (£10,250+VAT RRP), which stores up to 485 Blu-ray movies or 2,700 DVD movies, or 30TB (£14,750+VAT RRP) of storage capacity, which can store up to 800 Blu-ray movies or 4,500 DVD quality movies. The 1U+ Movie Server is a follow-on from the Kaleidescape 1U Server, which is the workhorse for most Kaleidescape systems worldwide. What sets the 1U+ Movie Server apart, however, is that it provides higher performance and better reliability, due to a substantial redesign. The new model retains the 1U Server’s industrial engineering, allowing the 1U+ Movie Server to fit into an existing system when adding or replacing a server, however its new power supply promises to significantly increase MTBF over that of the 1U Server. The manufacturer states that multiple servers will cluster to store thousands of movies and albums as a single, seamless collection, while Kaleidescape’s proprietary kOS operating system enables the 1U+ Movie Server to provide computing and caching services, in addition to storing and serving movies. This improves the performance of movie players while browsing and searching, especially for a large collection of movies. kOS enables the 1U+ Movie Server to meet the content protection requirements of the motion picture studios and it provides Kaleidescape’s RAID-K data protection that enables the server to continue operating after a hard drive has failed without losing any data. For playback of content imported from a Blu-ray disc, the physical disc must be present in either an M500 Player or in a Kaleidescape Disc Vault. The 1U+ serves Blu-ray movies to up to 15 zones simultaneously, DVD movies or music to up to 50 zones simultaneously and up to four movies can be imported simultaneously. Lode Audio Continues To Drive Development

Lode Audio has added new automation platform drivers to its offering

Multi-room audio specialist, Lode Audio, has released details of its latest system integration drivers. Available to download free of charge from the Lode website, users can now integrate Crestron’s Media Player and Command Fusion. With the launch of Lode’s Creston’s Smart Media Object driver, the two systems are now fully compatible with the UI, remaining within the same Crestron application as the other devices in the system, allowing users to navigate their music libraries and streaming services without having to load a separate App. Crucial updates that are included in the driver include saving of queues as playlists, direct API calls via the driver, all source selection is now done via cross point and zone grouping support for those not using a separate audio matrix. After much demand from users, Lode has also developed its own Command Fusion solution in conjunction with Dubai-based installers Platinum Vision. Lode says Command Fusion offers a very flexible, high performance and rich end user experience, without the need for processors within the control landscape. For Crestron and AMX users, the Lode Command Fusion driver can also be integrated into their systems. Those interested are asked to contact Lode’s customer support for further information. Tuck Into Some Sky TV, Chowmain Style!

Keep Sky users happy with a helping of Chowmain’s new Control4 driver

Driver specialist Chowmain has developed an IP based driver that provides control over UK-based Sky set top boxes. This IP driver eliminates the need to attach infra-red (IR) emitters to the set top box and is compatible with the Sky+ HD, Sky Q and Sky Q mini boxes. On top of IP control, the driver also provides automatic channel media list updates for Control4. This ensures that the channel listing on Control4’s user interface is always up to date with the latest channels for that particular region. Available now, the company says you can speed up control over your customer’s sky set top box by 3-10 times over IR control, and there is no need for IR buds, which means no more IR bleeding and no more accidental bud drop offs. Users should also always have up to date channels on their Control4 navigator and never be effected by channel number changes or when Sky adds or removes a channel again. Updates can be set to automatically take place hourly, daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly. It is also possible to manually update via programming action (tie it to a custom button or experience button). The company says the really beautiful thing about this solution is that there is no need for a third-party box to sit between Control4 and the Sky+ HD / Sky Q set top box. With a single site licence (which has a price of $60usd MSRP) installers can set up one or 100 boxes. The driver will work on any Control4 controller running OS 2.6 or later.

Frame The Sound

Monitor Audio has launched an easy fit picture frame speaker line

Monitor Audio has introduced SoundFrames, an ultra-discreet picture loudspeakers that can be matched to any room’s décor. The speakers offer a slim profile, choice of grille designs in three sizes. Individual images for the grille cloths can be selected from a library or bespoke speakers can be created using the customer’s own high resolution photographs. The cabinet frames are available in high gloss white and high gloss black lacquer. The SoundFrames can be fitted either in-wall or on-wall and with or without a frame using the Frameless grilles option. The maker says the models will combine in any way and in any number of speakers to generate multi-channel music and film sound and are easy to fit using keyhole fixings for on-wall installation and pre-fix corner brackets for the in-wall models. To ensure wire-free look, the connecting cable runs from the speakers through the wall cavity to the audio source. The range comprises three models. SoundFrame 1 adopts the aspect of a typical portrait picture frame and is designed for music and film audio in a front left/right and surround configuration. SoundFrame 2 is a longer center channel speaker designed for visual harmony with thin televisions or projection screens and can also be placed in a vertical position to match larger displays. SoundFrame 3 is the most compact speaker of the three and it can be used on its own, as a rear to complement the SoundFrame 1 and SoundFrame 2s, or with a sub-woofer. Monitor Audio says the speakers deliver the company’s natural sound quality from an ultra-slender cabinet just 87mm (3.5in) deep. Each speaker features an Inverted Dual Concentric module which pivots in all directions allowing for adjustment within the room. The large high power bass driver uses Monitor Audio’s RST cone technology that was developed for its flagship speakers. RST’s surface contours are designed to keep the cone light and agile, but enhance its rigidity and strength for a rapid and life-like response. There is also a high frequency attenuator switch that will raise or lower levels by 3dB. More Information: Monitor Audio +44 (0)1268 740580, www.monitoraudio.co.uk

Yamaha Includes Dolby Vision, 4K Ultra-HD, MusicCast, TIDAL And Deezer On New RX-V83 AVRs

The RX-V383 and RX-V483 (both 5.1) will be available in May and the 7.2ch compatible RX-V583 and RX-V683 in June.

Yamaha has just released its latest family of AVRs, the RX-V83. This group looks to carry on the work it has done in recent years with its MusicCast platform, which links all of Yamaha’s products together over a home network. The new family also offers some additions to underline the brand’s commitment to delivering AV versatility and compatibility. The new range consists of the RX-V683, RX-V583, RX-V683, RX-V383 and RX-V483, created to deliver entry level to mid-range solutions. The whole RX-V83 series includes Dolby Vision, 4k Ultra HD and HDR compatibility. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are supported on the RX-V583 and RX-V683 with the RX-V383 and RX-V483 supporting Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. Bluetooth is included across the range with the RX-V483 and above featuring Bluetooth transmission as part of MusicCast, allowing users to connect a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Each model also includes the maker’s YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer) technology for auto calibration of speakers using a parametric equaliser, with the RX-V683 featuring the upgraded YPAO-RSC (Reflected Sound Control), which is set up to cope with reflective or awkward surfaces and furniture in a room. For home theatres, Yamaha is promising to keep the quality coming via its own CinemaDSP technology. From the choices available in the feature, Yamaha recommends Sci-Fi mode for home cinema sound or for more straightforward TV sound or two-channel, the 5 or 7ch stereo modes are a good choice. Yamaha has included on the RX-V683 an MM phono stage which allows end users to play records through their full home cinema system. The AVR is also fully MusicCast-compatible, allowing multi-room delivery. This range also adds compatibility with TIDAL and Deezer digital music platforms. Both services will be available on all 2017 released Yamaha network AV receivers from the RX-V83 series alongside other MusicCast wireless multiroom audio products via a future firmware update. Control The Storm!

StormAudio has teamed up with Dirac to deliver room correction across its range

StormAudio, manufacturer of high-end immersive Audio home cinema kit, has entered into an agreement with Dirac Research, specialist optimised sound enhancement technology, to incorporate the Dirac Live room correction solution into its new StormOptimizer suite, equipping StormAudio’s integrators with a tool to effectively and efficiently correct the room acoustics. “At StormAudio, it’s our mission to provide our integrators and end-users with exceptional sound and service and our agreement with Dirac enables us to achieve both,” says Yves Trélohan, StormAudio’s SVP, Home Entertainment and Luxury Audio Product Division. “Dirac Live has been well recognised as the best room correction solution on the market. Advanced yet simple to use, Dirac Live will be a powerful tool for our integrators – they will deliver a premium listening experience to their customers while spending less time on site.” Dirac Live corrects the frequency response and also the impulse response of the loudspeakers in a room. The maker says using multiple measurement and mixed phase correction, Dirac Live helps audio systems to create a natural, realistic and transparent sound with tighter bass and reduced room modes. Dirac Live will be a standard feature for all newly purchased StormAudio processors and made available as a free DSP runtime firmware upgrade to the products already installed. “StormAudio designs, manufactures and markets some of the world’s finest home theatre audio components for an audience that expects nothing short of uncompromised audio quality,” says Niklas Thorin, Dirac’s GM of High Performance. “Their decision to adopt Dirac Live represents one more validation of our superior sound optimisation technology by a leading manufacturer who demands the very best for their customers. We saw a great match and are pleased that StormAudio has selected Dirac Live to improve the listening experience even further.” More Information: StormAudio +1(212) 4813456 www.stormaudio.com
