NIGLON CHANGES LIVES WITH £50,000 CHARITY DONATION
The donation is set to support the wide-ranging work of the electrical industries charity. Niglon became the first ever Commercial Agreement (CA) partner of the Electrical Industries Charity last June – and now, 12 months on, has handed over what is hoped will be the first of many donations.

ommercial Director, Paul Dawson, says working alongside the charity has opened his eyes to the breadth of services offered to current and former electrical workers – and their families. As part of the partnership, Niglon has donated 10% of the profits plus VAT from every single sale of its Median wiring accessories range during the last year. The company has also worked to highlight and spread awareness of the fantastic work of the charity amongst the industry through traditional media, its company marketing materials, and on social media. Paul explains: “I’ve been in the industry for more than 30 years, so have

an awareness of some of the struggles facing workers and former workers – whether that’s around their health, wellbeing, or career. Sadly, we all know colleagues and peers who have been through tough times – and the hope is always, of course, that someone will be there for you in your hour of need. “The impact of the pandemic is sadly set to continue for a long time, and we’re also now seeing people’s finances stretched further than ever due to the cost of living increases. Shane’s story
Throughout the year, the Niglon team has learned about some of the individuals who’ve benefitted from the EIC’s help – people like Shane. The electrical distributor relied on the EIC when he became so unwell that he could barely get out of bed, and his employment was terminated just before the end of his probationary period. When his symptoms worsened, he was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with a dilated cardiomyopathy – meaning he was in severe heart failure and had two blood clots in his heart, despite leading a healthy lifestyle. Thankfully he eventually recovered enough to be discharged – but he still needed to attend hospital appointments up to 70 miles away from home. The family were able to cover their rent and utilities, but were having to sell clothing and toys to afford travel, hospital parking, and their weekly food shop. The EIC stepped in to provide a food voucher, pay for the children’s school uniforms and shoes, and secure funds from League of the Helping Hand for new carpets needed in their home.

HAGER ADDS NEW DECORATIVE AND METALCLAD USB A+C TWIN SWITCHED SOCKET OPTIONS Hager has extended its popular Sollysta Wiring Accessories range, with the introduction of Decorative and Metalclad USB A+C Twin Switched Socket options.
A
s consumers continue to drive demand for in-home and workspace portable device charging solutions, Hager’s Sollysta range now includes Decorative and Metalclad finishes. The Sollysta Metalclad options have been specifically designed to combine both durability and aesthetics without compromising on functionality. Manufactured from high grade galvanised steel, the Metalclad socket solution is finished with a durable epoxy powder coating. While the Decorative range offers a contemporary style to any interior, delivering an aesthetically designed socket solution. In addition to its robust design, the Metalclad socket option features faceplates which overlap the lip of the back box and sit flush to the back box edge for a smooth high-quality finish. Ease of installation has also been factored into its design with a strong two tab knockout which can be cleanly removed without deforming the box wall.

Primary charging through intelligent connection The Sollysta 13A Twin Switched Socket with USB A+C ports has built-in intelligent connection, enabling the socket to identify itself as the dedicated primary charger for the connected device. KNIGHTSBRIDGE UPS THE POWER WITH 45W USB CHARGING SOCKETS As the demand for USB charging points increases hugely, so does the demand for the speed and power they can deliver and, accordingly, there has been a proliferation on the market of electrical accessories claiming to meet the needs of both consumers and commercial users. However, not all accessories are equal and warrant study to see if their power claims are merited.

Charging is evolving and merging into a single solution that is not only backward compatible but also capable of delivering increased power and speeds
hile the choice of devices available may have grown, choosing the right outlet remains complicated by a plethora of charging standards, cable types and brand jargon that doesn’t help. Charging your phone has traditionally been a simple process: connect the cable into the phone and the charger, and when it’s charged, it’s charged. In today’s environment, people expect things to happen faster and with greater force. However, such devices are just not powerful enough for hungry products such as laptops, tablets, and so on, and will not effectively power the device. As a result, charging is evolving and merging into a single solution that is not only
backward compatible but also capable of delivering increased power and speeds. QC (Quick Charge) and PD (Power Delivery) are two typical methods that have emerged to capitalise on the increased power and speed that the new USB-C connector can manage. QC is a Qualcomm-developed proprietary technology. Therefore, you must have a QC compatible charger as well as a QC enabled device to benefit. PD is a technology created by USB-IF (the official USB Implementers Forum), and assuming devices and chargers have been manufactured to the most recent requirements, will be compatible. Knightsbridge, one of the UK’s top manufacturers of wiring accessories and lights, has jumped ahead of the game with the release of its latest charging
solutions, which offer 18W QC over the USB-A port and up to 45W PD over the USB-C port (power is shared when both ports are active at the same time). The Knightsbridge charging solution can charge QC devices (mainly Android-based smart phones) at up to 18W, allowing for a quick charge of up to 50% in under 30 minutes with compatible smartphones. Power users can now plug their laptops into the USB-C port, eliminating the need for bulky power adaptors. USB-C is a universal charging standard, and any USB-C charger should be able to power a laptop with a USB-C charging port and power bank. Unfortunately, this has not been achievable until now. For the first-time, power-hungry gadgets may now be charged straight from wall outlets using the 45W USB chargers. Two 13A 2G switched sockets in curved edge or square edge moulded white designs are available, with outboard rockers, dual earths for high integrity earthing, angled top-down terminals for quick installation, and are designed to accommodate 25-35mm back boxes (depending on wiring conditions). The 50x50 modular inserts are available in white, grey, and black and may be paired with a variety of modular and multimedia combination plates, allowing for a bespoke creation. Knightsbridge has also developed 60W A-C and C-C cables, as well as a 100W certified USB-PD C-C cable, to round up the collection. It is critical that your charging cables can withstand the power required. SCOLMORE GETS GREEN LIGHT FOR UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE’S NEW HEART AND LUNG RESEARCH INSTITUTE A major project to create the University of Cambridge’s new Heart and Lung Research Institute has recently been completed. A joint initiative between the University of Cambridge and Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the new development on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus is the largest centre for heart and lung research, education, academic-industrial collaboration, and clinical care in Europe.

ork began on the site in October 2019, with the scheme progressing safely throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The new Research Institute contains 8,000m2 of research space, spread across three floors. The building, which is linked to the RPH via a basement tunnel, provides a 10-bed clinical research facility, along with state-of-the-art laboratory space for 22 principal investigators and 250 researchers. Munro Building Services, provider of mechanical and electrical installation and maintenance services in the public and private sectors, worked with the main contractor, SDC, on the project. Munro’s senior electrical project manager, Graham Sargeant, was responsible for delivering the electrical programme.
Graham was keen to use a single supplier for all the wiring accessories requirements, and, wishing to provide a quality, cost-saving solution against other manufacturers, he approached Scolmore to tender. Given some of the specific requirements for this medical environment, Scolmore originally didn’t have the full complement of products available when discussions were first undertaken. However, working closely with Graham, the technical and product development teams at Scolmore were quickly able to come up with the full range of products required for this high profile and specialist project. As the exclusive supplier of wiring accessories products for the project, Scolmore has seen in excess of 1,300 products from its Click Mode antibacterial and antiviral certified range installed throughout the 8,000m2 research facility. Products include: Click Mode Blue Medical Socket Outlets • – Blue ‘Medical Equipment Only’ Sockets are designed to distinguish them from non-IPS electrical sockets. This helps ensure medical equipment is plugged into IPS sockets and non-medical equipment is plugged into non-IPS sockets. They are strength tested and approved to BS1363, offering assured quality and safety. In total 84 double sockets and 10 single sockets were installed on the medical bed head trunking located in the CRF area on the ground floor. • Click Mode Red and Green Outboard Rocker Switched Socket Outlets – these further enhance the offer of a colour differential for supply being switched. Red rockers for essential services are generator backed, and the green rockers are UPS backed. • A variety of one and two gang Click Mode white switched sockets. • Metal clad sockets have been used in ceiling voids and plant areas.

• The Aquip66 range of weatherproof switches was installed in the cold rooms Scolmore continues to invest to ensure that its wiring accessory products offer enhanced hygiene properties. All Click Mode plates have been independently tested and have shown to have anti-viral properties against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. After a contact period of four hours, all tested plates were shown to have a 99.9% kill off rate against enveloped viruses and a 92% kill off rate against non-enveloped viruses. This anti-viral testing is in addition to the anti-bacterial testing already carried out. Mode and Mode Part M are all manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. When independently tested, all products achieved a 99.99% kill off rate across all four types of the strains of bacteria – MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia. Comments Graham Sargeant: “I have worked with Scolmore and the company’s range of products for over five years and on previous projects they have quickly developed products if they did not have them in their current ranges. So, when it came to requiring specialist products for this project, I knew that Scolmore could deliver and that they were competitive against other manufactures. “It all began with a phone call with Scolmore’s group key account and specification manager during the pandemic when most people were working from home or furloughed, and it quickly progressed to soon having sample blue sockets personally delivered to site.
