Safety ’n’ Optimism

Cautious optimism, staying safe, slowly improving business, and being healthy and surviving seem to be the watchwords of our world right now.

For this Distributors Directory issue, I had asked around to manufacturers, distributors and garment care owners about how fabricare is doing and how the supply chain is hanging in. Here are some of those random fabricare industry views:

“We have had enough business to be fortunate enough not to have to lay anyone off nor reduce hours for employees,” one person relates. “We are cautiously optimistic about future orders, but are aware some of our customers are suffering.”

Another voice says: “Quote activity is up 20%, but not at normal levels yet. Normally we have 10 RFQs per day. We have about five per day now, and they want them in 30 minutes.”

A third supplier reports that the U.S. market overall is off about 46% as of end of June, and their sales graphs show things have been slowly coming back since a low point in mid-April.

A garment care owner says, “As of June, we were down about 69%. That’s up from being off 80% in April. I expect sales to remain off between 65-70%. I am hoping that September gets us up into the 50% range of normal volume. We currently have only 26 of our 68 employees working.”

Another owner relates: “We have been bettering our sales every week. We went from being 25% of normal sales to 65%. My feeling is that sales will stop at 80% of normal sales and will not get to 100% for a long time. In time, we may see closures. The fit will survive.”

Home Run Hire

This summer’s American Drycleaner Your Views survey asked the trade audience, “What sort of success did you have when you last looked to hire?” Here is what respondents revealed:

Twenty-three percent said, “When we last hired, we found a Home Run hire.” Another 37% “had some hits, some strikeouts.” “Last time up, we weren’t seeing good ones, we chased bad pitches,” reported 17% of respondents. “Last time up, it didn’t go well, hard to find help, we struck out,” laments 20%. “We decided not to hire at all, so we never even got up to bat,” says 3%. (See graphic.)

The survey also asked, “When you hired last, where did you look for help and how did that go for you?” Some answers are as follows:

• “Indeed, social media posts.”

• “Previous applicants, currently/previously employed at other cleaners.”

• “Snagajob website.”

• “Craigslist.”

• “Social media, placed signage in our store front, and offered a bonus to employees who referred a new hire.”

• “Online, newspaper publications.”

• “I used Indeed and it worked well.”

• “We tried radio, Craigslist, ZipRecruiter, sign on window, and word of mouth.”

• “Walk-in.”

• “Craigslist works for me.”

• “Asked current employees.”

The survey asked dry cleaners: “When you last looked for help for your counter, routes or plant, how were the responses from your hiring efforts?”

“Only fair, some applicants but not really any candidates,” said 35%. For 24%, it was, “It didn’t go as well as we wanted, it was hard to find good help.” “Mostly OK, we received some applicants and some candidates,” reported a 21% share. Then, there were equal shares of 10% that said, “Positive, we were getting applicants and candidates,” or “Not well, we had to stop looking, or never got started.”

Lastly, the survey asked: “Have you ever hired a home run team member and what did you learn about the process?”

Some respondent answers were:

• “Day-to-day tryouts, for the first three days.”

• “I’ve found no matter how much you probe, ask the right questions, and do background work, it all comes down to luck.”

• “We have hired many good people but have also miscalculated. Process is difficult and not fail-safe. A lot is learned each time.”

• “Yes, when you get the chance, do it. It might cost more and may even upset the current situation. However, it will pay big dividends in the long run.”

• “Yes. It was just a matter of numbers. Eventually, a home run crossed our plate.”

By planning for and offering additional services, your business will serve a wider variety of customers and generate more revenue, making you less reliant on the walk-in customer. Finally, your distributor should provide detailed line drawings of the plant.

As you look to develop, improve, or purchase a drycleaning plant, there are multiple critical factors to consider that will ultimately shape your business success — now and down the road!

Nobody understands those factors — site selection, plant layout, workflow, equipment mix, financing, services and design — more than your local distributor.

As textile care experts who know the markets they serve, distributors can and should become lifetime business partners who’ve got your back, and provide ongoing services before, during and after the equipment sale.

Do your research, interview distributors in your market and be sure the one you choose checks all the boxes. A “good” distributor is worth his/her weight in gold.

LOCATION SELECTION

Early on, your distributor works closely with you to evaluate any potential plant sites by analyzing competition, traffic flow, visibility and demographics. Distributors understand their local markets well and will be able to tell you if these factors are favorable for success.

Once a site looks solid, your distributor should then estimate your plant’s sales potential by applying value to your demographic data, competition, equipment mix and utility costs. This tells you whether or not you move forward with that location.

EQUIPMENT MIX AND MORE

Once the location is a go, your distributor works to conceptualize your plant’s equipment mix, utilities, design and workflow.

Whether you’re developing a new plant, or revitalizing an old one, a good distributor will take you through equipment sizes, types and performance levels, while factoring in criteria like efficiency, accessibility, productivity and programmability. Together, if your business model calls for

CASH FLOW

Good distributors can take all this data and generate a cash flow summary. This overviews a new plant’s capital outlay, return on investment, income, losses, expenses, and more. It is essential to securing favorable financing.

PLANS AND PERMITS

Once financing is approved, you and your distributor will typically engage an architect and a general contractor to perform necessary plans, process for permits and build out your space. The general contractor coordinates subcontractors, and your distributor provides all your equipment and ancillary items.

TRAINING

Once the equipment is in place, the distributor will provide training on maintaining, operating and programming machines; serving customers; and providing services such as residential and commercial wash/dry/fold. Some distributors offer hands-on training, as well as preventative maintenance schedules and service contracts.

AFTER THE SALE

Of course, a quality distributor also delivers after-sale services, including preventative maintenance, technical repairs and replacement parts.

As the owner of a drycleaning business, you want to be certain that your money and efforts result in a successful, profitable outcome.

Your distributor business partner should always be looking for ways to help improve your profits — even two, five, 10, or 15 years down the road! ADC

Medical scrubs drive helps healthcare

Goodwill and Max I. Walker in Omaha, Neb., have teamed up to provide medical scrubs for Creighton healthcare professionals, Max I. Walker notes.

When Creighton University School of Medicine students contacted Goodwill Industries Inc. (Goodwill Omaha), asking if the nonprofit organization’s thrift stores had any medical scrubs on the racks that they could spare, staff from Goodwill Omaha, and local dry cleaner Max I. Walker, jumped into action.

“Our stores are temporarily closed right now due to the coronavirus threat, so our retail operations team went store to store and collected every piece of scrubs they could find,” says Tobi Mathouser, president and COO at

Goodwill Omaha. “They found more than 375 pairs of scrubs.”

The donation is for a medical scrub drive that Creighton’s medical students are holding to collect the garments and donate them to healthcare workers at CHI’s Bergen Mercy.

“There is an increased demand for scrubs at the hospitals due to heightened precautions for doctors and nurses to be able to decontaminate themselves as they travel to and from home and the hospital,” says Adrienne Pyle, a third-year medical student at Creighton School of Medicine and the scrubs drive’s organizer.

“Goodwill needed a partner to launder the scrubs for the healthcare workers. They found one in local dry cleaner Max I. Walker.”

Fabricare postponed to August 2022

The California Cleaners Association (CCA) reports: “Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the regulatory restrictions regarding social distancing and large gatherings, CCA has been forced to postpone its Fabricare 2020 Convention & Exhibit originally scheduled in Long Beach this August.”

The CCA Board has already secured the dates of August 20-21, 2022, for the next show, it notes. CCA says it is “disappointed by not having its Exhibit and Convention this year, but strongly feels it is in the best interest of all parties to postpone the event.”

One-day turnaround key

“Fifty-nine percent of your best customers want clothes ready in one day or less!” declared the voice during the webinar. “Also, Gen Z and millennials want garments ready in one day or less, too!”

Those survey facts were delivered by Jeff Schapiro during a recent Zoom webinar to a fabricare audience of about 400 attendees.

59-Cent Portable Belt Rack

A 59-Cent Folding, Portable Belt Rack, proclaims the front cover of the August 1945 issue of American Drycleaner. Inside the issue, the feature of the same name shows the rack hanging in a room as a team member hangs cleaned belts to dry.

10 YEARS AGO. Mortgage rates fell to a new record low, with the 30year fixed rate averaging 4.57% for the week ending July 8, down from 5.20% a year earlier. The lower rates have increased demand for home refinancing loans, but have had little effect on huge imbalances in housing supply and demand.

35 YEARS AGO. Inspector Bagger. A wag once said, writes Marcia Miller, columnist for American Drycleaner, “Inspector Bagger, isn’t he from Scotland Yard?” What dry cleaners mean by an inspector/bagger is certainly less romantic, but very practical: the person responsible for

inspection of finished work and for the bagging of completed orders — a vital and important job.

50 YEARS AGO. Dream Job. A research project at a New York hospital was flooded with applicants for a month-long study paying $25 a day. Purpose of the project: to study the effects of complete bed rest. We learned about this program from a dry cleaner in New York, who prefers to remain nameless, who told us that he had several employees he felt were very qualified for the project.

75 YEARS AGO. A 59-Cent Folding, Portable Belt Rack. The front

cover of the August 1945 issue of American Drycleaner: “Rack can be hung up almost anywhere, taken down when the belts are dry, and carried to the finishing room.” The feature continues inside the issue: “It can be unfolded in two sections, with about a half-dozen slender rods in each section, and the belts can be laid over these rods. When we say belts, we are, of course, speaking of the kind with composition backs. The plain cloth belts are simple enough to handle.” ADC
