re you on Facebook because somebody suggested your business should, “Have a presence?!”

Is that all you care to be? A place-holder in cyberspace? Or do you want to make your brand stand out, and turn it into an influencer in the realm of Facebook?

There is a lot more to social media than just being there.

You can educate, bond with, and entertain people with your style, your goodwill, and your positive attitude.

Two separate drycleaning business presidents are going to share their first-hand knowledge, experience and views all about Facebook — what works and what doesn’t — for reaching your drycleaning customers and going beyond just counting ‘clicks.’

That’s Dan LaCarte, president of the drycleaning division of his family business Model Cleaners, based in Charleroi, Pa. This family-owned business is run by him and his four brothers. It was first started by their father in 1986, and has expanded from one small location to 34 locations and diversified into LaCarte Enterprises, with five separate divisions that employ over 350 employees throughout Western Pennsylvania, Morgantown, West Virginia and Northeast Ohio.

Are there challenges and surprises you didn’t expect using Facebook in new ways?

“There are always challenges with social media and trying to capture that ‘lighting in a bottle,’” LaCarte says.

“Everything you post you want to go ‘viral’ or be the best content you put out, but sadly that isn’t the case. We make great content daily and sometimes it can fall on deaf ears, so I would say that is a challenge.

“You have to just keep creating content and telling your story. Something will stick, and when it does its a great feeling. Then, it’s right back to the same process.

your content has an expiration date and it get buried with everything else, so you have to always be on top of it and posting content. This is where most brands fail. They just make social accounts because someone said, ‘You need to be on social media to succeed,’ but there is way more involved than just making an account,” LaCarte relates.

“We have been very fortunate that we do not see too many angry customers or bad reviews coming through our social outlets. One of the things we were worried about is having a disgruntled customer or ex-employee say mean things about us online. Being very social, as we are, it can make you very vulnerable,” he points out.

Can you share a memorable ‘lesson learned’ about interacting with customers and businesses on Facebook?

LaCarte explains: “There was one instance that we bought a child in need a Christmas present which was part of a ‘What do you want for Christmas’ social media campaign.

“We did a great job filming the process of us buying the child the gift and using our delivery truck to deliver the child the gift right before Christmas. We thought this video would really get good engagement but it did not.

“We learned that the video we made was too long, it was over three minutes, lesson learned was when we do a creative video it needs to be under two minutes or people will lose attention on it,” he says.

“Best engaging posts thus far have been our Employee Spotlights and the special events we do for our team, such as cookouts, Christmas parties and turkey’s on Thanksgiving.

“Also,” he adds, “our company has six different brands with Model Cleaners, Fussy Cleaners, Williamsburg Cleaners, Model Uniforms and Model Apparel, as well as Stoney’s beer.

“So we try to incorporate the ‘universe of brands’ like the Marvel Comics, so for instance, if we do a video about Model Cleaners pickup and delivery, in the background you may see Stoney’s beer somewhere in the video,” LaCarte notes, referencing a subtle co-brand tie-in.

What do your customers like about your Facebook page? What does your team like about it?

“From the customer level, we like Facebook because you can show customers our process, show them all that it takes to clean and press an item,” LaCarte relates.

“Educating the customer on how we actually get a ketchup stain out of a white blouse. Showing this will gain trust among our customer base to keep coming back to our operation and also this may get new customers in as well, and also showing the process in a creative and fun way is helpful to keep customers continually (continued) www.americandrycleaner.com

“We do nice things for our employees such as having Christmas parties, giving turkeys out to them for Thanksgiving, having cookouts, and showing this can in turn become a strong recruiting tool for us in attracting future employees for our operation,” he points out.

Lastly, What tips can you pass along to other drycleaning owners and presidents who may be thinking about doing more on Facebook? Help them get beyond the clicks.

“Create your company’s own personality. Be unique and creative. Do not live in a box,” LaCarte relates.

“Show your process in a fun and creative way. Once you start it, keep at it and your audience will grow.

Also, use your database. In our database we have over 65,000 e-mails, and every quarter we do a Follow Us On Facebook Contest. This will help your social media following continue to grow.

“There are Facebook ads to push content to Instagram, story ads, campaigns, follow contests, you name it. I think

one thing businesses aren’t using right now to the best of their ability is using Facebook to create rich and eyecatching Instagram ads to pull people in. You have very little time to catch someone’s attention and Instagram stories allow you to at least try to grab them quickly,” LaCarte recommends.

“People love dogs. Not too long ago, we asked our managers to take photos of customer’s dogs that came through the drive-thru. Dogs love to come to A Cleaner World; we hand out treats to dogs that come visit. We received tons of photos from our managers, and our Facebook followers loved it!

“A few other ideas that come to mind are behind the scenes photos, sharing employee milestones, and funny laundry memes or cartoons. The bottom line is to make it personal and have fun. Followers really respond to those sorts of things.”

What are some unexpected challenges and surprises to using Facebook in new ways?

“We always knew that Facebook was photo driven, so we always use great care when selecting our photos. We have seasonal posts, like out-of-season storage tips and when to have your winter coat cleaned, that we work into our calendar as a reminder to our customers.

“When we posted this winter coat cleaning reminder: Wool coats should be dry cleaned at the end of the season. Moths are attracted to everyday human scents like perfume, smoke, and food. Putting a wool coat away dirty makes it susceptible to critters. We chose to include a photo of a moth, and we never expected it to grab so much attention with 545 engagements and 95 shares,” Edwards says.

Share a memorable ‘lesson learned’ about interacting with customers and businesses on Facebook.

“First lesson learned: don’t run a Facebook contest,” Edwards says.

Sweater Contest, and we offered four $25 free drycleaning winners and one grand prize winner of $100 free dry cleaning. We received very few entries, and Barb Mitchell, our social media manager who works out of her home near Nashville, ultimately had to private message a number of friends and business acquaintances to beg for submissions.

“We learned that not that many people have Ugly Christmas Sweaters, and you need a bigger prize to generate interest. It looked good on Facebook, but we really had to work at it.”

“Second lesson learned,” he continues, “folks tend to try Facebook first when they forget to pickup their dry cleaning and need you to open the store on a Sunday. This has happened a number of times, but the most memorable one was last summer when Barb and her family were getting ready to get on a cruise ship headed for Cuba. It took her a bit of time, but we were able to get the customer her clothes. She was most grateful for the Sunday help.”

“Facebook is a wonderful communication tool,” Edwards says. “We are able to help our customers solve dayto-day laundry, garment care, and fabricare issues; share happenings in the community, especially those where they can help neighbors that may need assistance; share information

from other businesses and social media platforms; and offer our assistance should they need a problem solved.

“Customers like that we have fun on Facebook. Barb frequently shares crazy laundry issues her son and husband create, funny laundry jokes and memes, and photos of her Wonder Beagle.”

And lastly, What tips can you pass along to other drycleaning owners and presidents who may be thinking about doing more on Facebook? Helping them to get beyond the clicks.

“Focus less on benefiting or promoting yourself or your business, and focus more on helping the customer,” Edwards relates. “Once you develop an outward focus, customers will automatically start responding.”

One other thought Edwards shares: “Our style is to be personal, approachable, and helpful. We avoid using lots of technical terms and are never stuffy when we share information, we give real life examples. Barb ribs her husband a lot. Be an authority, but be an approachable authority.”

So there we have two influencers on Facebook. You might already be doing some of those things, but if you’re not there yet, keep those simple things in mind: Help your clients; keep messages friendly and brief; make use of photos; share your team culture; and be true to you.

The old saying, just be yourself and you’ll be fine has no ADC better home than on Facebook.

Illinois, and Chicagoland, get first Lapels Lapels Dry Cleaning reports it recently opened a, “fullservice, environmentally-friendly drycleaning plant and store at 819 Ridge Road in Wilmette, Ill.” This represents the first location for the firm in the Chicago area and in the state of Illinois.

Fahim Zuberi is the owner, the firm notes. He took over the dry cleaners in September, 2018, and led the conversion into a Lapels plant.

“The previous owner had been there since 1931 and

the conversion didn’t happen overnight and involved much more than changing signs,” says Zuberi.

“We’ve updated the machines and technology so we can use GreenEarth®, the drycleaning industry’s only non-toxic cleaning alternative,” Zuberi says, and adds: “What that means is we are the only dry cleaner in the area to have zero hazardous waste in the drycleaning process.”

A native of Pakistan, Zuberi worked as a supervisor of airport services for Emirates Airlines at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. Through the E2 visa program, Zuberi was able to come to the U.S. and open his drycleaning plant and store.

“The people at Lapels have been phenomenal to me,” relates Zuberi. “In addition to offering a superior drycleaning product that is environmentally safe, they have provided the coaching and mentoring to me to enable me to step in and run my own business.”

Says Zuberi: “Now that the conversion is complete, I’m so excited for the people in the Chicagoland area to experience the difference in Lapels.”

10 YEARS AGO. Cash for clunkers may be to blame for an unexpected drop in July’s retail sales. Offering a $4,500 trade-in credit for turning in a gas-guzzler, the program boosted auto sales 2.5% while retail sales overall dropped 0.1% — perhaps indicating that consumers’ discretionary income went toward auto purchases. Retail sales were expected to rise 0.8% excluding automobiles, but instead fell 0.6%.

Consumers cut back on electronics and groceries: department-store sales fell 1.6%.

35 YEARS AGO. “Dryclean; hold the sequins” Sequined garments are popular these days — from garments with sequined appliqués to garments covered completely with sequins. Most sequined garments are drycleanable, but sequins often present a problem for the dry cleaner, according to a spokeswoman at the IFI analysis department. She says some sequins may curl, lose color, peel, corrode, or even dissolve in solvents. If a garment is labeled drycleanable, the dry cleaner can reasonably presume that all its component parts, including trims, will withstand dry cleaning.

50 YEARS AGO. Hirsute Hippie Bankers. Who said that all bankers were stodgy, square — or even ultra-conservative? A bank group in London has been running recruit-

ing ads showing a heavily-bearded young man. “We want bright young men,” the ads says, “and if they prefer to be hairy, that’s their privilege.” The ad cautions, however, against shoulder-length hair that, “tends to get caught in computers.” … Gaudy Giving; Gracious Living? Stuck for what to give the wife for your wedding anniversary, her birthday — or maybe Halloween?

A Los Angeles company is offering a telephone adorned with pearls, rubies and diamonds. The cost? A mere $1,000! … A Happy Difference! A happy idea for a sale was devised by a drycleaning owner on Chicago’s near north side. For his 15th anniversary, which fell on July 15th, he offered the prices that prevailed 15 years ago for the two weeks’ duration of the special sale.

“The difference,” the public was informed, “will make you happy.”

75 YEARS AGO. Drycleanable Belts!

A patented Celanese process has been announced which makes it possible to manufacture self-fabric belts that last as long as the life of the matching garment. The process, says Celanese, not only makes belts virtually “wrinkle-free,” but permits innumerable dry cleanings or launderings. When fortified with the interlining known as Lamicel, the fabric covering “will not separate from the interlining with wear or in laundering or dry cleaning.”

A columnist in Women’s Wear Daily, “the retailer’s national newspaper,” hailed the new belt idea. And Celanese predicts that it will make, as marketed, an advance in the dress, negligee and coat field as it did in the men’s shirt industry when, “wrinkle-free” collars were first introduced. “Although it was put into use only a short time ago for self-fabric belts, it has been enthusiastically accepted by manufacturers of belts and dresses, and welcomed by dress buyers.” ADC — Compiled by Tim Burke, Editor
