As a dedicated State Senator for the Georgia General Assembly, Donzella James has spent decades championing progress, unity, and equitable opportunities for all Georgians. Growing up during the Civil Rights era, Donzella James witnessed firsthand the struggles and resilience of those fighting for equality. While too young to march, she was old enough to understand the courage and sacrifice that defined that pivotal period. This early exposure left an indelible mark on her, shaping her vision for the future—a vision rooted in unity, justice, and equality. James envisions a Georgia where every citizen, regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, or sexual preference, can thrive in an environment that values and supports them.

James’s unwavering belief in unity as the key to progress guides her actions and decisions as a legislator. “We are stronger together than we are apart,” she emphasizes. These leaders were not just trailblazers; they were reminders that dedication, courage, and an unwavering commitment to justice could effect real change.

James believes in passing on the wisdom and lessons she has received, nurturing the next generation of leaders through active mentorship. She encourages young people to participate as Pages at the State Capitol, giving them the opportunity to experience firsthand how the legislative process operates. Additionally, James hosts an annual Youth Day at the Capitol, where she introduces young leaders to influential community figures, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and leadership.

Through her campaign efforts, she also provides young people with opportunities to get involved and understand the importance of voting, helping them develop the skills and mindset needed to make a meaningful impact.

A Legacy of True Public Service When reflecting on her career, Donzella James aspires to leave behind a legacy of true public service. Inspired by Dr. King’s powerful words, “Everybody can serve,” James seeks to demonstrate that leadership is not confined to those with advanced degrees or prestigious titles. Speaking of cookies, I’ll be sure to leave out the finest oat milk and some gourmet gingerbread for you, because Santa, we need to talk about my wishlist. Let me preface this by saying I’ve been an absolute gem this year—kind, stylish, and only a little mischievous (but in a charming way, of course). That definitely earns me a top spot on the Nice List, right? So, here’s the thing: I’m dreaming of a very chic Christmas, and I just know you’re the man to make it happen. Picture this: me slipping into a pair of Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pumps (size 38, please) that scream elegance, while a Prada Cleo bag swings gracefully from my arm—black, but blush pink would also be fabulous. Add a Chanel tweed jacket to the ensemble, and I’d practically be walking art. To keep things cozy, I’d love Gucci fur-lined loafers, the kind that whisper luxury with every step. And since Lebanon is in my heart, a custom Elie Saab gown would be a dream come true—something timeless and dripping in glamour. My wrists, Santa, are currently bare and calling for a Tiffany T bracelet, while my skin could use a little La Mer magic to stay radiant through the winter. Now, imagine me lounging in an outfit from The Row—soft knits, tailored trousers, and buttery leather boots—sipping cocoa in a chalet in Gstaad, surrounded by the quiet elegance of snow-covered mountains. Of course, I’d need a Dior Saddle Bag for my travels and a vintage Yves Saint Laurent scarf for that effortless touch of old-school glamour. And, Santa, you know how much I adore pink—so a lifetime supply of fresh pink roses would really set the tone for my daily vibe. I know this sounds like a lot, but let’s not forget that I’ve waited patiently all these years without ever getting that pony I once dreamed of (no hard feelings, by the way). Consider this a way to make it up to your favorite fashionista. I promise to continue spreading my sparkle, sass, and signature style in return—because really, isn’t that what the holidays are about? Her life story exemplifies what it means to lead with both strength and compassion, always focusing on creating opportunities, uplifting those around her, and leaving behind a legacy that serves as a beacon for future generations.

Vision and Purpose: A Drive Beyond Circumstances At the heart of Lorraine Cochran-Johnson’s vision is a belief that transcends mere ambition: the conviction that we are greater than our circumstances. This belief is not just a personal mantra but a guiding principle that drives her as she prepares to step into the role of CEO of DeKalb County.

RODNEY BULLARD’S WORK AND LEADERSHIP ARE A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF UNITY, MENTORSHIP, AND INTENTIONAL ACTION.

At the intersection of social justice, community empowerment, and transformational leadership stands Rodney Bullard. As the founder and CEO of The Same House, Bullard has dedicated his career to bridging social and economic divides, pushing forward the vision of a “Beloved Community” inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of unity and inclusion.

Dr. Mays, whom Bullard met as a young boy, shared a lesson that continues to influence his life’s work. “He told me, ‘Get as much education and experience as you can, but understand that it’s not for you. It’s so you can serve others and inspire them to do the same.’” This lesson led Bullard to pursue a career not for personal recognition, but with the intent to uplift others.

Vision and Purpose: Driving Change in Atlanta and Beyond

Today, Bullard honors those lessons through initiatives like the Junior Achievement Discovery Centers, Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards, and Youth LEAD Georgia. These programs equip young leaders with the tools, resources, and mentorship to break down barriers and build bridges for future generations.

For Rodney Bullard, the future is about unity, collective action, and driving systemic change. “At The Same House, our vision is grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘Beloved Community’ and John Lewis’s powerful words: ‘We’re one people. We’re one family. We all live in the same house,’” Bullard explains. This philosophy shapes his work every day as he strives to address some of the most pressing challenges facing communities across America.

Living in Atlanta, a city with the highest economic inequality in the country, Bullard is deeply committed to changing the narrative for the next generation. “A child born into poverty here has only a 4% chance of escaping the cycle,” he says. “But I believe in Atlanta’s potential. This city has the resources, talent, and heart to rewrite that story, but only if we act together.” This unwavering belief in the power of community drives his efforts to unite people and create tangible, lasting change.

“Even in the face of uncertainty, I focus on collective action,” Bullard adds. “When people come together, we can solve even the toughest problems. That’s how we move from division to transformation.”

Mentorship and Development: Paying It Forward Mentorship is a core pillar of Bullard’s approach to leadership. When asked about the mentors who shaped his life, he reflects on two pivotal figures: his first-grade teacher, Mrs. Adams, and Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, the former president of Morehouse College.

“Mrs. Adams was a game-changer for me,” Bullard recalls.

“She took it upon herself to tutor me every day one summer, and by the end of it, I was reading two grades ahead. She not only helped me academically but showed me the power of believing in someone when they can’t yet believe in themselves.”

Legacy: Leadership Beyond Recognition When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, Bullard reflects on leadership in a way that challenges conventional views. “I want my legacy to show that leadership is not about seeking power or recognition, but about service and impact. Bullard believes that the greatest achievements are collective, not individual. “If my career inspires others to lead with humility and a heart for service, then I will have succeeded.

“Early in my career, I thought leadership was about centering myself,” he admits. “But I’ve learned that it’s about centering others helping them see their potential and creating a space where they can thrive.”

In 2024, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) marks an extraordinary milestone—its 80th anniversary. Since its founding in 1944, the UNCF has been a beacon of opportunity for African American students, providing access to higher education, fostering leadership, and helping to shape the future of America. As the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, the UNCF has supported over 500,000 students and granted over $5 billion in scholarships and financial aid. This anniversary is not just a celebration of numbers, but a moment to reflect on the lives transformed and the enduring legacy of an organization committed to excellence, equity, and social change.

A Legacy of Purpose: The Founding of UNCF The UNCF was born out of the visionary efforts of Dr. Frederick D. Patterson, a prominent African American educator, and a coalition of civic leaders who recognized the need for a collective effort to support historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In 1944, when many African American students were denied access to higher education and resources were limited for Black institutions, the idea of a central organization dedicated to raising funds for HBCUs became a necessity.

Dr. Patterson, who was president of Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), was instrumental in its creation. As an advocate for educational equity, he saw the challenges faced by Black students, especially those attending HBCUs. In a nation still grappling with the effects of segregation,

the UNCF was conceived as a way to raise vital funding to support Black institutions, empower Black youth, and advocate for educational opportunities that would uplift communities nationwide.

With the slogan “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste,” first coined in 1972, the UNCF became synonymous with educational excellence and African American empowerment. This powerful message resonated with donors and the general public, encouraging support for the cause of Black higher education. Over the years, it has become one of the most successful public awareness campaigns, mobilizing millions of dollars to support scholarships and grants.

Empowering Students and Shaping the Future As the UNCF celebrates 80 years of progress, the organization’s work in transforming lives is evident. By providing scholarships, internships, and a range of academic support services, the UNCF has enabled hundreds of thousands of students to attend and graduate from college, many of whom might not have had the chance to do so otherwise.

UNCF-supported students have gone on to excel in various fields, from politics and business to science and the arts. One such example is former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a UNCF scholarship recipient who graduated from the University of Denver and went

on to have a distinguished career in government. Another is Dr. Maya Angelou, the renowned poet, author, and civil rights activist, who, like many, benefitted from the UNCF’s efforts to remove financial obstacles to higher education.

The organization’s work, however, extends beyond individual students.

By strengthening HBCUs, the UNCF has played a crucial role in the broader landscape of American higher education. It provides funding to 37 private, historically Black institutions, helping them maintain their academic programs, attract top-tier faculty, and continue to offer a nurturing and supportive environment for students of color. Today, the UNCF continues to provide more than just financial assistance. Through partnerships with corporations, foundations, and individuals, it creates pathways for students to gain career experience, access internships, and find employment after graduation.

MACK WILBOURN MACK WILBOURN, A VISIONARY ENTREPRENEUR TRANSFORMING ATLANTA’S BUSINESS LANDSCAPE Mack Wilbourn’s journey from a small-town upbringing in Magnolia, Arkansas, to becoming one of Atlanta’s most successful entrepreneurs is a testament to his determination, resilience, and innovative spirit. As the owner and President of Mack II, Inc., a quick-service restaurant management company since 1971, Wilbourn has consistently demonstrated his ability to adapt, grow, and lead in a competitive industry. With a portfolio of thriving franchises in the bustling Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, he has carved out a legacy that is as impressive as it is inspiring.

A Pioneer in Franchise Management Mack Wilbourn’s career began in 1971 when he and his business partner, Brad Hubbert, made history as one of the first minority McDonald’s franchisees in metro Atlanta. The pair managed four McDonald’s restaurants, employing over 150 people. This pioneering venture not only broke barriers but also set the stage for Wilbourn’s long-lasting impact on Atlanta’s business ecosystem. After 21 years of success, he and Hubbert sold their McDonald’s operations in 1992, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another filled with ambitious endeavors.

In the decades that followed, Wilbourn expanded his influence in the food service and retail industries. A Civil Rights Leader at the Forefront of Change Andrew Young’s journey into the national spotlight began in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, where his unwavering commitment to racial justice helped reshape the social fabric of the United States. Help for Healthcare Professionals, HHCP, is a nonprofit organization based in Georgia. We were founded to provide support and services to the members of our community who have devoted their lives to keep us safe and healthy. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, respiratory therapists, social workers, community health workers, and pharmacists; are only a few brave and heroic people making a difference in our lives and our community. While we stayed safe within our homes and away from the pandemic, these healthcare workers went out daily to face the dangers of the infection head-on.

HHCP aims to reach healthcare professional communities across Metro Atlanta to mitigate healthcare worker burnout, strengthen public investments in the workforce and public health, increase access to mental health care for health workers and address healthcare professionals overall wellbeing by valuing and protecting this special community.

Each year we provide targeted programs and services in fulfillment of our three core pillars- advocacy, education, and crisis relief. As we expand our Crossroads Education and Skills Training program, we ensure sustainability of the healthcare workforce. We do this by removing barriers that impede both aspiring and existing members of the healthcare ecosystems’ ability to obtain comprehensive training.

Long-term, this creates healthier communities with better access to healthcare. wellbeing by valuing and protecting this special community.
