A VISION OF SERVICE, MENTORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY GROWTH
As a dedicated State Senator for the Georgia General Assembly, Donzella James has spent decades championing progress, unity, and equitable opportunities for all Georgians. Her work is a testament to her deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of service, mentorship, and collective action. Through her career, James has become a beacon of hope, advocating for policies that uplift communities and inspire the next generation to engage in leadership and civic duty.
James’s legacy is rooted in the belief that service should be accessible to all, not just those who meet specific criteria. She wants to inspire future leaders to recognize that impactful change starts with selflessness and a commitment to serving the needs of others. For James, service is not just a career but a lifelong pursuit of contributing to the betterment of society.
Vision and Purpose: A Commitment to Unity and Progress
James’s journey in public service has been marked by significant personal and professional growth. Serving as a State Senator from 1994 to 2002 and again from 2009 to the present, James has witnessed dramatic shifts in the world around her. The transition from typewriters and mainframe computers to personal computers, smartphones, and AI has brought about a transformation in how leaders connect with their constituents and carry out their responsibilities.
Growing up during the Civil Rights era, Donzella James witnessed firsthand the struggles and resilience of those fighting for equality. While too young to march, she was old enough to understand the courage and sacrifice that defined that pivotal period. This early exposure left an indelible mark on her, shaping her vision for the future—a vision rooted in unity, justice, and equality. James envisions a Georgia where every citizen, regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, or sexual preference, can thrive in an environment that values and supports them. James’s unwavering belief in unity as the key to progress guides her actions and decisions as a legislator. “We are stronger together than we are apart,” she emphasizes. This principle is at the heart of her leadership, motivating her to work with people from all walks of life, seeking solutions that foster collaboration rather than division. Even in times of uncertainty or challenge, James maintains clarity in her purpose by grounding herself in the fundamental belief that service to others is the highest calling. By prioritizing people over politics and focusing on the common good, she navigates difficult decisions with conviction and a steady hand. Mentorship and Paying It Forward Throughout her life, Donzella James has been blessed to have been mentored by many legendary figures who shaped not only her professional journey but her personal outlook as well. Mentors such as Sen. Leroy Johnson, the first Black Senator in Georgia after Reconstruction; Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress; and Martin Luther King Jr., known affectionately as the “Gentle Giant,” have left an indelible impact on her. These leaders were not just trailblazers; they were reminders that dedication, courage, and an unwavering commitment to justice could effect real change. James believes in passing on the wisdom and lessons she has received, nurturing the next generation of leaders through active mentorship. She encourages young people to participate as Pages at the State Capitol, giving them the opportunity to experience firsthand how the legislative process operates. Additionally, James hosts an annual Youth Day at the Capitol, where she introduces young leaders to influential community figures, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and leadership. Through her campaign efforts, she also provides young people with opportunities to get involved and understand the importance of voting, helping them develop the skills and mindset needed to make a meaningful impact. A Legacy of True Public Service When reflecting on her career, Donzella James aspires to leave behind a legacy of true public service. Inspired by Dr. King’s powerful words, “Everybody can serve,” James seeks to demonstrate that leadership is not confined to those with advanced degrees or prestigious titles. Rather, true leadership comes from the heart—a heart filled with grace and a soul driven by love. Her goal is for others to remember her as a legislator who put people first, focusing on empathy, compassion, and service over political gain.
Evolution of Self: Adaptability and Growth
This evolution has taught James the importance of adaptability and staying relevant. She has learned to pivot in her approach, embracing new technologies and communication methods to stay connected to her community. James’s willingness to meet people where they are, whether through social media, community events, or direct outreach, has enabled her to maintain strong connections and remain an effective leader. These experiences have deepened her understanding of the importance of growth, both personally and professionally, and reinforced her belief in the need for continuous learning and flexibility. Advice to the Next Generation: Resilience and Growth To the young people who look up to her, Donzella James offers a message of resilience and lifelong learning. “Stay focused, concentrate on learning as much as you can, and remember that everything you do will follow you throughout your life,” she advises. In an age where actions and decisions can be permanently etched into the digital landscape, she stresses the importance of integrity and mindfulness. “We do live in glass houses,” she reminds them, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong moral compass. James believes that the most important quality young leaders should cultivate is resilience. Life is full of challenges, and the ability to face them head-on, adapt, and keep moving forward is crucial for making a real impact. Embracing growth, staying confident, and nurturing the courage to dream big are all integral to becoming a leader who can drive positive change. Community Impact: Advocating for Lasting Change As a native Atlantan and a third-generation Georgian, James’s contributions to her community have been profound. Throughout her career, she has introduced and supported legislation that has positively impacted a wide range of areas, including education, public safety, infrastructure, and affordable housing. Her work has helped shape a Georgia where communities can grow, families can feel safe, and opportunities are available for all. James believes that the most pressing issue facing Georgia’s leaders is the need to create legislation that improves the overall quality of life for all citizens. Addressing systemic inequalities and fostering sustainable growth must be at the forefront of legislative efforts. For James, creating positive, lasting change means prioritizing policies that address the diverse needs of the community and foster a sense of belonging for everyone. Donzella James’s career is a testament to the power of service, mentorship, and resilience. Through her vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to unity, she continues to inspire those around her and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for Georgia.

Dear Santa, I hope this letter finds you well and in the best of holiday spirits. I imagine the North Pole must be buzzing with activity right now—elves working their magic, reindeer stretching their legs, and Mrs. Claus baking cookies that probably smell like Christmas itself. Speaking of cookies, I’ll be sure to leave out the finest oat milk and some gourmet gingerbread for you, because Santa, we need to talk about my wishlist. Let me preface this by saying I’ve been an absolute gem this year—kind, stylish, and only a little mischievous (but in a charming way, of course). That definitely earns me a top spot on the Nice List, right? So, here’s the thing: I’m dreaming of a very chic Christmas, and I just know you’re the man to make it happen. Picture this: me slipping into a pair of Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pumps (size 38, please) that scream elegance, while a Prada Cleo bag swings gracefully from my arm—black, but blush pink would also be fabulous. Add a Chanel tweed jacket to the ensemble, and I’d practically be walking art. To keep things cozy, I’d love Gucci fur-lined loafers, the kind that whisper luxury with every step. And since Lebanon is in my heart, a custom Elie Saab gown would be a dream come true—something timeless and dripping in glamour. My wrists, Santa, are currently bare and calling for a Tiffany T bracelet, while my skin could use a little La Mer magic to stay radiant through the winter. Now, imagine me lounging in an outfit from The Row—soft knits, tailored trousers, and buttery leather boots—sipping cocoa in a chalet in Gstaad, surrounded by the quiet elegance of snow-covered mountains. Of course, I’d need a Dior Saddle Bag for my travels and a vintage Yves Saint Laurent scarf for that effortless touch of old-school glamour. And, Santa, you know how much I adore pink—so a lifetime supply of fresh pink roses would really set the tone for my daily vibe. I know this sounds like a lot, but let’s not forget that I’ve waited patiently all these years without ever getting that pony I once dreamed of (no hard feelings, by the way). Consider this a way to make it up to your favorite fashionista. I promise to continue spreading my sparkle, sass, and signature style in return—because really, isn’t that what the holidays are about? Thank you in advance, Santa, for making my season so chic. You truly are the best. With love, glamour, and endless sass, Oceane 28

JOHN R. LEWIS EMPOWERING CHANGE: THE VISION AND LEGACY OF THE JOHN R. LEWIS LEGACY INSTITUTE
At the John R. Lewis Legacy Institute, our vision is more than just a guiding principle; it is the embodiment of Congressman John R. Lewis’s life work and enduring message of justice, equality, and courage. Known for his unwavering commitment to civil rights and his call to engage in “good trouble,” Congressman Lewis inspired generations to stand up against injustice and work toward systemic change. Our mission is to carry forward this legacy by empowering individuals, particularly the next generation, to advocate for justice, foster inclusivity, and create impactful change in their communities.
Camp Promise: Empowering the Future
Challenges and uncertainty are an inevitable part of any mission-driven work, but staying true to our purpose is what ensures that we remain effective. The John R. Lewis Legacy Institute maintains clarity by:
This transformative program is designed for high school-aged young men, particularly those in grades 9 through 12. Hosted annually at Emory University, Camp Promise provides participants with the tools they need to thrive academically, personally, and socially. Through mentorship, leadership training, and exposure to diverse perspectives, the camp fosters self-awareness and a commitment to community service. The program instills in its participants the values that Congressman Lewis held dear: courage, resilience, and a determination to create “good trouble” for positive change.
Staying Anchored to Our Mission
Creating Intentional Opportunities for Growth
Revisiting the core values that Congressman Lewis lived by serves as our moral compass. These values—justice, equality, and the belief in the power of collective action—remind us that our work is part of a larger movement. This connection to our roots keeps us focused, even in the face of obstacles.
Our programs emphasize practical skills that will serve participants throughout their lives, such as financial literacy, public advocacy, and resume building. These tangible tools ensure that our youth leaders are not just prepared to lead but are equipped to inspire those around them.
Engaging in Collective Leadership
Building Lasting Mentorship Relationships
Courageous leadership requires collaboration. By partnering with our community, stakeholders, and organizations, we foster an environment where innovative solutions can emerge. The strength found in collective leadership not only helps us navigate challenges but also amplifies our ability to make an impact.
Initiatives like the Good Trouble Mentorship Program pair young people with mentors who embody Congressman Lewis’s principles. These mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and a roadmap for navigating the complexities of leadership.
Maintaining Clarity in Purpose Amid Challenges
Focusing on Impact Over Obstacles
Encouraging Civic Engagement
The end goal of our work—empowering youth, strengthening communities, and fostering systemic change—keeps us moving forward. When faced with adversity, we view challenges as opportunities to demonstrate resilience and adaptability.
Our programs inspire young leaders to become active participants in their communities. We emphasize the importance of voting rights, advocacy, and standing up for systemic change. By encouraging this engagement, we hope to create a network of empowered individuals who continue to fight for justice long after they leave our programs.
Learning from the Past to Inform the Future

RODNEY
BULLARD
RODNEY BULLARD’S WORK AND LEADERSHIP ARE A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF UNITY, MENTORSHIP, AND INTENTIONAL ACTION.
At the intersection of social justice, community empowerment, and transformational leadership stands Rodney Bullard. As the founder and CEO of The Same House, Bullard has dedicated his career to bridging social and economic divides, pushing forward the vision of a “Beloved Community” inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of unity and inclusion.
Dr. Mays, whom Bullard met as a young boy, shared a lesson that continues to influence his life’s work. “He told me, ‘Get as much education and experience as you can, but understand that it’s not for you. It’s so you can serve others and inspire them to do the same.’” This lesson led Bullard to pursue a career not for personal recognition, but with the intent to uplift others.
Vision and Purpose: Driving Change in Atlanta and Beyond
Today, Bullard honors those lessons through initiatives like the Junior Achievement Discovery Centers, Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards, and Youth LEAD Georgia. These programs equip young leaders with the tools, resources, and mentorship to break down barriers and build bridges for future generations.
For Rodney Bullard, the future is about unity, collective action, and driving systemic change. “At The Same House, our vision is grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘Beloved Community’ and John Lewis’s powerful words: ‘We’re one people. We’re one family. We all live in the same house,’” Bullard explains. This philosophy shapes his work every day as he strives to address some of the most pressing challenges facing communities across America. Living in Atlanta, a city with the highest economic inequality in the country, Bullard is deeply committed to changing the narrative for the next generation. “A child born into poverty here has only a 4% chance of escaping the cycle,” he says. “But I believe in Atlanta’s potential. This city has the resources, talent, and heart to rewrite that story, but only if we act together.” This unwavering belief in the power of community drives his efforts to unite people and create tangible, lasting change. “Even in the face of uncertainty, I focus on collective action,” Bullard adds. “When people come together, we can solve even the toughest problems. That’s how we move from division to transformation.” Mentorship and Development: Paying It Forward Mentorship is a core pillar of Bullard’s approach to leadership. When asked about the mentors who shaped his life, he reflects on two pivotal figures: his first-grade teacher, Mrs. Adams, and Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, the former president of Morehouse College. “Mrs. Adams was a game-changer for me,” Bullard recalls. “She took it upon herself to tutor me every day one summer, and by the end of it, I was reading two grades ahead. She not only helped me academically but showed me the power of believing in someone when they can’t yet believe in themselves.”
Legacy: Leadership Beyond Recognition When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, Bullard reflects on leadership in a way that challenges conventional views. “I want my legacy to show that leadership is not about seeking power or recognition, but about service and impact. Leadership, to me, is about giving back and advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves.” Bullard believes that the greatest achievements are collective, not individual. “If my career inspires others to lead with humility and a heart for service, then I will have succeeded. Leadership is about what we do for others, not what we build for ourselves.” Evolution of Self: Growth Through Service Reflecting on his personal growth, Bullard shares how his understanding of leadership has evolved over the years. “Early in my career, I thought leadership was about centering myself,” he admits. “But I’ve learned that it’s about centering others helping them see their potential and creating a space where they can thrive.” This shift in mindset has also influenced Bullard’s personal philosophy. “I’ve come to understand that I am more than enough, but it’s not about me. True fulfillment comes from serving others.” This realization has deepened his commitment to creating spaces where individuals can grow, collaborate, and make meaningful change in their communities. Advice to the Next Generation: Cultivating Purpose and Intentionality.

As mayor, he continues to work tirelessly to ensure the city remains a place of opportunity, inclusivity, and innovation for everyone.
Public safety is another area where Mayor Dickens has made his priorities clear. Under his leadership, Atlanta has worked to increase its public safety efforts, but Dickens is also committed to addressing the root causes of crime, including poverty and lack of opportunity. A strong advocate for community policing, Dickens believes that building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve is crucial for ensuring safety and justice. He has supported measures to provide police officers with additional training, focus on de-escalation tactics, and improve mental health resources for both law enforcement officers and community members.
A Background Rooted in Service and Leadership
Additionally, Dickens has worked to enhance the Atlanta Police Department’s recruitment and retention efforts, ensuring that the force is reflective of the communities it serves. His goal is to balance a strong, professional police presence with progressive, community-centered approaches to public safety.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Andre Dickens’ connection to the city runs deep. He graduated from the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Engineering. His academic and professional training in engineering, paired with his passion for community service, has shaped his leadership philosophy. Dickens’ career has been marked by a focus on problem-solving, using data-driven strategies to address Atlanta’s challenges while maintaining a human-centered approach. Before ascending to the mayor’s office, Dickens was an at-large member of the Atlanta City Council, serving from 2013 to 2021. His tenure on the council was marked by his work on affordable housing initiatives, economic development, and public safety reforms. As chair of the Transportation Committee, Dickens also advocated for expanding public transit and improving the city’s infrastructure. His background in engineering, combined with his deep understanding of the needs of Atlanta’s residents, positioned him as an ideal candidate to lead the city during a time of transition and growth. A Vision for a Unified and Thriving Atlanta Mayor Dickens’ leadership has been defined by his forward-thinking vision for Atlanta. Upon taking office, he outlined key priorities aimed at building a more equitable and prosperous city. At the core of his agenda are issues like affordable housing, public safety, economic development, and education. Dickens has made it clear that he is committed to ensuring that all of Atlanta’s residents, particularly those in marginalized communities, have access to opportunities and resources that allow them to thrive. Affordable Housing One of Mayor Dickens’ most prominent issues has been addressing the city’s housing crisis. As Atlanta has experienced rapid growth and gentrification, the need for affordable housing has become a pressing concern. Dickens has championed policies that aim to preserve affordable housing options while ensuring that new developments cater to diverse income groups. His administration has been focused on expanding the Housing Opportunity Bond program, which provides funding for affordable housing developments and repairs. By investing in affordable housing, Dickens is working to ensure that Atlanta remains a city where people from all walks of life can afford to live and grow. Public Safety and Community Policing
Economic Growth and Job Creation As mayor, Dickens has also placed a strong emphasis on expanding Atlanta’s economy. His administration has worked to foster job creation, support small businesses, and attract new industries to the city. Dickens has pushed for a comprehensive economic development strategy that includes revitalizing neighborhoods, supporting local entrepreneurs, and creating jobs in high-growth sectors such as technology, entertainment, and green energy. His administration has also focused on providing job training programs and workforce development initiatives, particularly for young people and underserved communities. Atlanta’s thriving tech industry, known as ”Silicon Peach” is a prime example of Dickens’ commitment to economic growth. Under his leadership, the city has continued to position itself as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, attracting new tech companies while supporting homegrown businesses. Celebrating Atlanta’s Spirit: The Masked Mayor’s Ball The Mayor’s Ball is an annual fundraising event that has become a key fixture in the city’s social calendar. Held each year to benefit youth programs and support educational initiatives, the 41st Masked Mayor’s Ball has grown into one of Atlanta’s most prestigious and anticipated events. Hosted by Mayor Dickens, the ball brings together civic leaders, celebrities, philanthropists, and community members to celebrate the city’s vibrant culture while raising funds for a noble cause. The event is a signature reflection of Dickens’ leadership style, blending civic engagement with community celebration. It offers attendees the chance to connect with one another while supporting programs that directly benefit the city’s youth. The funds raised through the Masked Mayor’s Ball are channeled into programs aimed at providing educational opportunities, mentorship, and career development for young people in Atlanta.

ANDREW ANDREW YOUNG
YOUNG
Andrew Young: A Legacy of Leadership, Service, and Global Impact
Andrew Young is a name synonymous with social justice, diplomacy, and visionary leadership. From his pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement to his impactful career as a U.S. Congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, and philanthropist, Young’s contributions to both American society and the global community have left an indelible mark. His life is a testament to the power of service, integrity, and a deep belief in the principles of equality and peace. A Civil Rights Leader at the Forefront of Change Andrew Young’s journey into the national spotlight began in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, where his unwavering commitment to racial justice helped reshape the social fabric of the United States. Born in New Orleans in 1932, Young was raised in a segregated South. His early experiences of racial discrimination shaped his desire to fight for equality, and he soon became one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most trusted allies and a leading figure in the struggle for civil rights. Young’s deep faith as a Baptist minister and his strong sense of moral purpose were critical to his activism. He first met Dr. King in 1955, and their collaboration would go on to change the course of history. As a leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Young played a central role in organizing and executing key civil rights initiatives, including the Selma to Montgomery marches, the *Birmingham Campaign*, and the March on Washington. He was an eloquent speaker, a strategist, and a leader who could unite people from all walks of life under the banner of justice and nonviolence. One of Young’s most significant contributions was his leadership during the 1966 Chicago Campaign, where he and Dr. King worked to address issues of housing discrimination, unemployment, and police brutality in northern cities. Young’s ability to build coalitions and bridge racial divides was crucial to the success of these efforts, laying the groundwork for future civil rights victories. From Activist to Diplomat: A Global Vision After the assassination of Dr. King in 1968, Andrew Young continued to carry the mantle of civil rights activism, but he soon expanded his focus to international affairs. In 1972, he made history by becoming the first African American to be elected to Congress from Georgia since Reconstruction. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Young advocated for civil rights, economic development, and social justice on a national level. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Young as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This was a groundbreaking achievement, and
Young’s tenure as Ambassador marked a new chapter in his career. As the first African American to hold this position, Young’s diplomatic efforts reflected his belief in the importance of international cooperation and human rights. He advocated for a more just and inclusive world order, and his work focused on strengthening U.S. relations with developing nations, particularly in Africa and Latin America. Young’s tenure as Ambassador was marked by his advocacy for African liberation movements, particularly in South Africa and Namibia. He worked tirelessly to highlight the oppressive nature of apartheid and to call for international sanctions against the South African regime. His position was controversial at times, especially given the Cold War context, but Young never wavered in his commitment to human rights and social justice. In addition to his work in Africa, Young played a critical role in U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East and Latin America, where he focused on promoting peace and encouraging dialogue between conflicting parties. His efforts helped lay the foundation for lasting peace agreements, and his diplomatic style—characterized by openness, empathy, and a commitment to finding common ground—earned him respect from world leaders across the political spectrum. Mayor of Atlanta: Building a City for All In 1981, Andrew Young returned to local politics when he was elected Mayor of Atlanta. His time as mayor marked a defining moment in the city’s history. Atlanta was experiencing significant economic growth during the 1980s, and Young played a crucial role in ensuring that this growth was inclusive and benefited all residents, particularly African Americans and other marginalized communities. Young’s tenure as mayor was focused on economic development, urban renewal, and civil rights. He helped transform Atlanta into a thriving metropolis, capitalizing on the city’s historic significance as the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. Young was instrumental in bringing major international events to Atlanta, including the 1996 Summer Olympics, which were a landmark achievement for the city and cemented its status as a global hub. A key event that underscored Young’s commitment to building a thriving, inclusive city was the development of the Atlanta Mayor’s Ball. Initiated during his time as mayor, the Mayor’s Ball quickly became a prominent annual event that highlighted the city’s cultural diversity, raised funds for local causes, and celebrated Atlanta’s civic achievements. The ball brought together leaders from business, politics, and the arts, helping to position Atlanta as a cultural and economic leader in the
