In this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we feature the incredible journey of Joscynthia Mason, a breast cancer survivor whose story is a testament to the power of faith, family support, and the human spirit. Joscynthia’s experience is an inspiring narrative of courage and hope that continues to shine brightly, illuminating the path for others facing this challenging journey.
Q&A with Joscynthia Mason Share your breast cancer journey with our readers, from diagnosis to survivorship, and what has been the most significant part of your experience? Joscynthia Mason: During the most trying time in history with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting daily life, I faced a dual challenge: enduring spinal surgery and discovering breast cancer during this period. The pandemic impacted my workplace, which eventually dissolved my management position. Amidst the uncertainty, I began experiencing muscle spasms and stiffness in my neck, leading me to consult an orthopedic doctor who suggested spinal surgery. In the same week as my spinal surgery, I had a routine yearly breast exam. As my son also underwent ACL surgery, I traveled for his procedure and back. The emotional toll was exacerbated by the pandemic’s restrictions, preventing visitors during hospital stays. However, my unwavering faith in God and the love and support of my family, especially my children, carried me through this difficult time. Following spinal surgery and while still in the recovery phase, I received a call from the breast center for a biopsy. The results revealed stage one breast cancer, amplifying my fears and uncertainties. Unemployed and relying on savings, the journey was emotionally challenging. Yet, my determination and belief in God propelled me forward. Throughout the process, prayer, resilience, and optimism were my companions. Despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic, I stayed connected with my spirituality and maintained a fighting spirit. The power of faith and the unwavering support from loved ones ultimately brought me through this emotional and challenging battle, reaffirming my belief in the strength of the human spirit when bolstered by faith. Breast cancer can be an emotionally challenging journey. How did you manage the emotional and psychological aspects of your diagnosis and treatment? Joscynthia Mason: Navigating breast cancer was emotionally daunting, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic and concurrent spinal surgery. The initial diagnosis of stage one breast cancer during a time of personal, financial, and global uncertainty was overwhelmingly frightening. The inability to have physical support due to hospital visitor restrictions intensified the emotional struggle. To cope, I leaned heavily on my faith in God and the incredible love and encouragement from my children, friends, and family. Prayer became my solace and a means to channel my fears and uncertainties. Despite being physically alone during medical procedures, even amidst the pandemic’s challenges, staying hopeful and positive played a pivotal role in managing the emotional and psychological aspects of the diagnosis and treatment. In retrospect, this journey affirmed that the power of faith, a positive mindset,and the love of family and friends are instrumental in overcoming the emotional toll of breast cancer. What support networks, organizations, or resources were particularly helpful

Arms Cancer Outreach, Patient Advocate Foundation, and Pink Fund were invaluable support networks. Their compassion and concern in care were exceptional, providing emotional support, financial assistance, and guidance. I highly recommend reaching out to these organizations through your oncologist or breast cancer doctor, as well as utilizing the support of dedicated counselors within these facilities. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about educating and raising awareness. What message would you like to convey to our readers, especially to those who may not be fully aware of the impact of breast cancer? Joscynthia Mason: Breast Cancer Awareness Month urges us to understand the profound impact of this disease. For those unaware, it’s crucial to grasp that breast cancer extends beyond a physical battle. It’s a life-altering emotional and financial struggle. Let’s stand united, fostering empathy and support, ensuring everyone facing this journey feels heard, cared for, and empowered. How has your perspective on life, your priorities, or your approach to health and wellness changed as a result of your breast cancer experience? Joscynthia Mason: My breast cancer experience shifted my perspective on life significantly. I became acutely aware of the preciousness of time and the value of self-care. Priorities shifted towards fostering joy, peace, and positive connections. Taking care of my health through mindful diet, ample rest, and self-care became non-negotiable. Embracing life’s beauty and surrounding myself with positivity became paramount, motivating a more intentional and fulfilling approach to health and wellness. The battle against breast cancer underscored the importance of cherishing every moment and prioritizing my well-being above all. What advice or words of encouragement would you offer to women and individuals currently battling breast cancer, and what do you think are the most important aspects of survivorship? Joscynthia Mason: To those bravely battling breast cancer, I offer this: Hold onto hope, for it’s a beacon through the darkest times. You are stronger than you know, capable of enduring and overcoming. Surround yourself with a support network that uplifts and understands. Embrace self-compassion; you’re doing your best. Celebrate small victories and progress, no matter how minor. In survivorship, remember, healing takes time. Focus on mental and emotional well-being, and allow yourself to grieve and grow. Seek joy, cherish love, and believe in your resilience. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to honor and remember those affected by breast cancer. Is there a special way you commemorate this month or reflect on your journey during this time of the year? Joscynthia Mason: As Breast Cancer Awareness Month arrives each year, I take a moment to reflect on my journey—acknowledging the battles fought and victories won. It’s a time to honor those who faced this formidable adversary, both survivors and those we’ve lost. I often participate in events or engage with support networks, contributing to the collective awareness effort. Additionally, I use this time to educate others, emphasizing the importance of early detection and understanding the emotional and physical challenges faced by breast cancer warriors.
