Help for Healthcare Professionals, HHCP, is a nonprofit organization based in Georgia. We were founded to provide support and services to the members of our community who have devoted their lives to keep us safe and healthy. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, respiratory therapists, social workers, community health workers, and pharmacists; are only a few brave and heroic people making a difference in our lives and our community. While we stayed safe within our homes and away from the pandemic, these healthcare workers went out daily to face the dangers of the infection head-on.

HHCP aims to reach healthcare professional communities across Metro Atlanta to mitigate healthcare worker burnout, strengthen public investments in the workforce and public health, increase access to mental health care for health workers and address healthcare professionals overall wellbeing by valuing and protecting this special community.

Each year we provide targeted programs and services in fulfillment of our three core pillars- advocacy, education, and crisis relief. As we expand our Crossroads Education and Skills Training program, we ensure sustainability of the healthcare workforce. We do this by removing barriers that impede both aspiring and existing members of the healthcare ecosystems’ ability to obtain comprehensive training.

Long-term, this creates healthier communities with better access to healthcare. wellbeing by valuing and protecting this special community.

Sheila Michelle Foye Sheila Michelle Foye is CEO of Précis Screening.

Précis Screening is a premier drug screening, clinical laboratory and transportation compliance company with ancillary offerings of employer services such as background verification and I-9 automation. Prior to becoming full-time CEO, Foye held various leadership roles as an HR and Finance Program and Project Management Leader. She has successfully delivered highly visible business and technical solutions across Big 4 consulting, healthcare, higher education, government, financial services, utilities, sales/marketing, staffing and multinational firms - 20 years and counting. With the intention to think globally and act locally, Michelle has served as secretary and vice president of a prior Homeowners’ Association Board. She also assisted with establishing The Ever Advancing Center for Human Development, a not for profit organization currently serving the personal development for citizens in Zambia, Africa. Foye founded The Breakthrough Foundation, an organization distinctly focused on moving today’s youth from inherent potential to phenomenal accomplishment.

Sheila Michelle earned a B.B.A in Management from Clayton State University. She continued her education with a MBA in International Business at Nova Southeastern University. She is a Certified Scrum Master, as well as, a Certified Project Management Professional. Michelle lent her professional experiences to the online classroom as a facilitator for International Business, student workshops, and new student orientation for University of Phoenix (2008-2013). Most recently, Foye established the Transportation & Medical Network, a national chain of drug test centers and clinical laboratories dedicated to providing 24/7 support to Department of Transportation regulated companies. She has educated more than 2,000 nurses, transportation professionals, entry level entrepreneurs and serial entrepreneurs in owning their own drug test center/ clinical lab to support improved healthcare outcomes and safety.

Sheila Michelle currently resides in metro Atlanta, Georgia with her husband Keith and their younger children. The Foye’s enjoy volunteerism, traveling, live music, watching their son Miles take on opponents in tennis, fellowship over great food with loved ones and chasing their grandchildren.

Dr. Michael Pendergrass Dr. Michael Pendergrass is a chiropractor located in the Atlanta area who is committed to disseminating the necessary information people need to live life to their fullest potential.

A graduate of Life University Doctor of Chiropractic Program, Dr. Pendergrass first practiced under Dr. Tony Nalda, hailed as one of the world’s most successful scoliosis correction doctors, in Orlando, Florida. Following which, he began working with various clinics around the Atlanta area, performing public speaking engagements, and gaining experience treating multiple types of patients in an array of practices. After working with Dr. Joe Esposito of the Dr. Joe Show on WSB Radio, touted as the world’s largest health talk radio show, Dr. Pendergrass turned his attention to creating an all-encompassing wellness program. A program that can meet anyone where they are at in their health and give them all the information they need to get their maximum potential. He has worked with a multitude of celebrities from several different fields in order to make this dream become a reality.

Having graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and working as a model, an actor, and as an Officer Selection Officer with the Marine Corps in charge of physical training for our future marine officers.

Dr. Pendergrass is no stranger to addressing matters concerning attaining peak physical condition. Today, issues pertaining to mental health; mental health, the nervous system, nutrition, and toxin reduction are all areas with quite a bit of confusion plaguing them. Dr. Pendergrass addresses these areas in depth with his clients, and helps to clear up complicated issues that can be very difficult to find answers for due to the massive amount information available.

The healthcare system today comes with roadblocks and challenges for both physician and patient alike. Thomas Edison once said, “The doctor of the future will provide no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

It is with this spirit at heart that Dr. Pendergrass has been a trailblazer in helping to provide the most comprehensive wellness care available today.

It is so good.” The only place you will hear community and business professionals saying this is in Winder, GA. It is because they have tasted and love the foods prepared by Chef Juan Turner!

Juan Turner has 22 years of food service experience and has worked for reputable high-end restaurants, like Ritz Carlton, Chateau Elan, The Westin Buckhead, and Bistro off Broad. He could have continued climbing the corporate ladder by going to New York or Los Angeles, or even opended his own restaurant, but instead, for the past 10 years he has found comfort and solace working in a healthcare setting. “I lead in the food industry by serving,” says Chef Turner. “There is no greater pleasure than serving the patients and the hospital staff.” Chef Juan Turner loves the mission statement of Northeast Georgia Health System: “Improving the health of the community in all we do” as it aligns closely with his life’s-mission. “With my healthcare job, I am not just providing instant gratification like I would get with a restaurant chef ’s job.

Chef Turner has dedicated his life to all aspects of the culinary profession and has made an impact not only on the patients and employees, but within the community as well. The business and professional community of those who attend the meetings of the Rotary Club of Winder or the Barrow Chamber Women in Business, a capella sing his praise. “Hospital food is the best,” is echoed by the attendees as they enjoy the meals catered by Chef Turner’s department.

Chef Turner is a Board member of the Wimberly Roots; a non-profit organization focused on empowering people to gain the knowledge and skills needed to grow their own food, and gain access to healthy food and health-related information within the community to improve their nutrition. Chef Turner also conducts monthly lunch and learn classes for the community with the aim of educating the community about low cost, healthy eating. He offers free educational classes at local high schools and during pre-covid times, enthusiastically demonstrated live cooking classes for hospital’s “Living Well” lectures. His “Wellness in the Kitchen with Chef Juan” was also a big hit. Besides cooking classes, he is very passionate about our youth’s physical and mental well-being.

For the past seven years, Chef Turner has religiously served as a mentor and coach at the local YMCA. Chef Turner is respected by his peers as being an icon of high working standards who has made a positive impact in the healthcare industry. “He serves more than a meal, and he is recognized as being more than just a chef.”

COL Nelson S. So Deputy Commander for Administration Colonel Nelson So currently serves as the Deputy Commander for Administration at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, GA. He has served as a Medical Service Corps officer in the Army since 1997.

Nelson has extensive experience leading healthcare organizations supporting communities in garrison and the joint force in deployed environments. He most recently served as the commander of the 29th Hospital Center where he led the unit through its organizational restructure from the 47th Combat Support Hospital, supported the whole of government response to COVID-19, and provided medical support to operations across the globe.

Nelson’s other operational assignments include leadership and staff positions in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, 1st Infantry Division in Kitzingen, Germany and Fort Riley, Kansas with deployments as a Medical Platoon Leader to Bosnia-Herzegovina, a Medical Company Commander in Iraq, and a Medical Planner in Iraq.

Nelson served as the Administrator for the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center at the beginning of the Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and helped to establish the Amputee Center. He commanded the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic in Germany, providing primary and specialty care services to over 10,000 beneficiaries.

At the strategic level, Nelson served at the Office of The Surgeon General as an Operations Officer and the Chief of Congressional Affairs, where he formulated the Army Surgeon General’s position on legislative issues, developed the congressional engagement strategy, and educated Congress on health care policy and budget issues that impact Army soldiers and their families. Nelson was also one of four Army officers selected for the Secretary of Defense Executive Fellows Program and served as a Fellow at Merck & Co in Global Oncology Policy, supporting the largest product line in the Merck Portfolio.

Nelson holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Health from The George Washington University and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

He is married to Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Andrea So and they have three daughters, Vivian, Catherine, and Ingrid, and one dog, Butters.

Dr. Contessa Metcalfe Dr. Contessa Metcalfe was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Contessa Metcalfe attended Xavier University where she earned her undergraduate degree. She then attended Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and residency at the National Naval Medical Center and Meharry Medical College. She focuses on preventive, occupational and integrative medicine and addiction therapy.

After graduating from St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Metcalfe answered her call to patriotism and decided to join the Navy. The Navy taught her to fly and allowed her to travel the world as a flight surgeon. She completed her Residency Training at the National Naval Medical Center and Meharry Medical College and owns Chastain Integrative Medicine, located in the Buckhead region of Atlanta where she specializes in medical aesthetics, preventive, occupational and addiction medicine.

She is also co-owner of Haute’ Doc Nutraceuticals, a supplier of high-quality vitamins and supplements.

In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, Dr. Metcalfe also works as a pharmacovigilance physician for a major pharmaceutical company. When not on the clock, she enjoys volunteering, writing, riding motorcycles, traveling and spending quality time with her family – husband Dr. Walter Scott Metcalfe and their three children, Lauren (13), Landon (12) and Laila (8). Dr. Brian Yee PT, DPT Dr. Brian Yee, PT, DPT is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT). A graduate of Northwestern University in physical therapy, Brian completed post-graduate physical therapy training at the University of Queensland in Australia and obtained his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Evidence in Motion Institute. He serves as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Mercer University Physical Therapy. Brian is the owner of Motion Stability Physical Therapy, a private physical therapy practice in metro Atlanta Brian has been published in the Medical Journal Spine, and was a contributor in the rehabilitation textbooks Orthopedic Clinical Rehabilitation Advisor (2010) and Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual (2018).

Brian has also published his own book in 2022 titled (Un) Resolved: Harnessing Your Movement Story to End Chronic Pain to inspire others to take ownership of their body and of their pain, and to reassure them that there is a more comprehensive solution to pain than a test, diagnosis or intervention.

Originally from southern California, Brian now makes his life in Atlanta, Georgia, where he and his wife, Eileen, have three children and Brian owns his private practice, Motion Stability Physical Therapy with two clinic locations in Buckhead and Peachtree Corners.

Dr. Mary Walker Retired Navy Nurse Corps Captain, Mary Emily Walker , is a Board Certified Medical/ Surgical Ambulatory Care Nursing, Breast Health Educator, and a Level 2 Healing Touch Nurse with over 40 years combined civilian and military nursing experience.

She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Albany State College in 1975.

In 1981,she accepted a direct commission into the United States Navy as a Lieutenant.

She served on active duty until 1988. During her tenure as a reservist , she held many leadership positions and was recalled to active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield ,and Operations Enduring Eagle and Iraqi Freedom. She was the first Health Promotion Coordinator for the Naval and Marine Reserve Center Atlanta, Georgia for over 1,050 reserve and active duty personnel. She developed and implemented an impressive health promotion program that served over 500 Naval and Marine reserve personnel from October 2003 to January 2005. Prior to her retirement, Captain Walker was the recipient of several decorations that included the Navy and Marine Commendation Medal(2),Joint Meritorious Award(4), National Defense Service Medal(3), Armed Forces Service Medal Reserve(4), Meritorious Unit (7), United States Coast Guard Special Operations(1).

A recipient of The Excellence Award in Clinical Nursing Practice in 2002 from the American Academy of Ambulatory Care nursing.

She was featured in the Pulse/Atlanta Journal Constitution “We Serve America’s Heroes””, and the Vanguard , May/June 2003 , “Comforting the Wounded”.

She is a member and current President of the Gamma Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated®, a professional nursing sorority guided by the motto “Service for Humanity.”

As a result of her commitment and dedication, she received the 2018 Johnnie Robinson Nurse of the Year Award. She is a 2022 Inductee into the Georgian Nurses Foundation, Georgia Nursing Hall of Fame.

Alexis Callaway My name is Alexis Callaway. I am a native of Coweta County, Georgia; where I still reside today. I am currently employed with the City of Senoia Police Department and have been for the past two and a half years. Before my employment with the City of Senoia, I was employed by the State of Georgia and served as a Capitol Police Officer. Overall, I have been in law enforcement for the past three and a half years.

My father, James “Jimmy” Callaway was my biggest inspiration and the reason for choosing a career in Law Enforcement. My father dedicated 26 years of his life to law enforcement until his unexpected passing in August of 2022.

He successfully managed to separate his work life from his personal life. Undoubtedly, there was no denying the fact that blue ran in my blood. So at the age of 19, I accomplished my dream and what I consider to be my biggest accomplishment ever- becoming a Police Officer.

I chose the path to serve and help others because of my innate passion for servitude. God has given me a servant’s heart that strives to protect my community. I strive to earnestly serve my community everyday as I proudly wear my badge.

Cynthia Palmer, RN Cynthia Palmer has been a registered nurse for 30 plus years. Her focus for the last 20 years has been in the critical care setting with the last 10 years served in a leadership capacity. Cynthia is currently the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Intensive Care Unit at Piedmont Rockdale Hospital in Conyers, GA. Cynthia is passionate about critical care and nursing as a profession. Cynthia serves as a leader and mentor in encouraging and supporting advanced education, quality care and professionalism for her team. She is a strong patient advocate, always strives to improve patient outcomes and foster a healthy work environment. As the Nurse Manager, Cynthia led her team through the Covid Pandemic and describes the experience in her published essay of the June 2021, “Share Your Story” Challenge Winner in the International Journal Nursing Management.

Ms. Palmer is a native of Brooklyn, New York, where she was privileged to attend Clara Barton HS and complete the Practical Nursing program. She went on to Beth Israel’s School of Nursing and received her BSN from the University of Phoenix. Cynthia is certified in Critical Care Nursing. ROBIN PINGETON, RN, MSN, FNP Robin is a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 35 years of experience in healthcare. Her medical experiences and focus include primary care, psychiatric medical management, diagnosis of dementia, depression, and mood disorders in the elderly. Her early nursing career includes ICU nursing in cardiac, surgical, trauma and burn specialties. She holds a Master of Science Degree from Georgia State University and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Kansas.

Robin is a subject matter expert in her field. During her career, she worked with nationally recognized experts in neurology and psychiatric in the elderly and is a sought-after speaker by many different medical organizations and community health awareness events. She was a State of Georgia educator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hand in Hand Program which focuses on training staff in senior living communities about person-centered care and abuse prevention of the elderly.

Several years ago, Robin recognized a need for quality comprehensive primary and dementia care in the frail geriatric population. She began her own practice that focuses exclusively on the delivery of comprehensive dementia and chronic care management, reducing polypharmacy, and preventing needless visits to the ER among these types of patients. With the influx of major businesses and corporations with headquarters located here, Georgia gets top marks as the state to do business.

People migrate here for better opportunities and a chance for a better life balance. Unfortunately, our healthcare outcomes do not reflect the same reality. Herein lies a tale of two cities. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2022, Georgia consistently boasts some of the worst healthcare outcomes in the nation.

The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce reports that nine counties are without any doctors, 18 without primary care physicians, 69 without pediatricians, and 76 have no obstetrician or gynecologist. Of the approximately 25,000 physicians in Georgia, only a small percentage is Black, further compounding and exacerbating an environment steeped in cultural distrust of the medical establishment. Research shows that patients and clients have the best outcomes when treated by providers that look and sound like them.

Underserved populations and rural communities need better access to quality healthcare and medical specialists. Limited access to quality care increases the maternal and infant mortality rate in these minority and underserved groups. Issues with access to intensive care units, cancer care, and behavioral health support also exist.

Elicia S. Collins PhD, MSN, RN Dr. Elicia S. Collins is an Assistant Professor and the Interim Assistant Dean of Nursing at a local School of Nursing in the greater Atlanta area. She has a special interest in overweight and obese African American women, physical inactivity, and prostate cancer prevalence. Dr. Collins has taught across the curricular spectrum (nursing fundamentals, medical surgical nursing, nursing pharmacology, interactive communication, cultural diversity, and health policy) in PN, BSN, RN to BSN, and MSN-FNP programs for the past 17 years. She currently teaches medical surgical nursing, nursing pharmacology, and health policy.

Dr. Collins started her nursing career after graduating with her BSN from Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University.

She continued her education and earned a master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, and finally she earned a PhD from the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions from Georgia State University.

Dr. Collins is dedicated to the generation and expansion of knowledge. Consequently, she has presented at several national, and international conferences. Moreover, she has completed several book, chapter, and online software reviews in addition to being a published author. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the International Nursing Honor Society and was also a March of Dimes Nurse of the Year finalist in 2015. She is committed to the nursing profession and supports legislation to advance the role of nurses in the state of Georgia as indicated by her memberships in the American Nurses Association and the Georgia Nurses Association. Dr. Collins is also dedicated to the understudy of cardiac health and its insurmountable effects of cardiac disease. Thus, for the past 15 years, she has served as an American Heart Association, Certified Basic Life Support (CPR) instructor.

Currently, she serves as the Founding Dean for Online Education and Expanded Programs at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), a position she has held since 2019.

Under her leadership, MSM has developed several online educational programs, including a Master of Science in Biotechnology which has ranked #1 and #2 over the last three consecutive years, Master of Science in Health Informatics, Master of Administration in Justice-Involved Care, Doctor of Healthcare Administration, and pipeline programs such as the Bridges to Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship (B2BB), and Bridge to Health Informatics. Dr. Howard has been a pioneer in promoting online education and has been recognized for her expertise in this field, having been invited to speak at conferences and events across the globe. She has also published several articles on topics related to diversity, health equity, and education.

Jeff Scarbrough Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Jeff Scarbrough has been serving as Fire Chief of Athens-Clarke County since 2013. Prior to coming to Athens-Clarke County, Chief Scarbrough helped start up Sandy Springs Fire Rescue serving seven years acting as; Deputy Chief, Fire Marshal, Public Information Officer, and EMA Coordinator. Prior to Sandy Springs, he served with the Clayton County Fire Department for 26 years, where he started out as a firefighter. Scarbrough has served in operations, EMS, support services, emergency management, and the fire marshal’s office prior to becoming Fire Chief.

Some of the initiatives in Athens Clarke County under Chief Scarbrough’ leadership include improving apparatus replacement, improved service delivery on medical emergency responses (Licensed Medical Responder), stronger community partnerships, improving firefighter safety: Nomex uniforms, Development of a Department Career Path, Development of a Strategic Plan, Updated policies and procedures, initiation of data use for performance management, SPLOST Funding to replace an aging fire station and a second set of PPE for firefighters.

In 2019, Athens Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services under the leadership of Chief Scarbrough, achieved a Class 1 ISO rating; a benchmark reached by less than 1% of the Fire Departments in the United States. Chief Scarbrough was recognized in 2018 by the NE Georgia Region 10 EMS Council by being presented the “Chairman’s Meritorious Award” and is a former Georgia State Firefighters Association Firefighter of the Year recipient and a Build a Better Georgia Award recipient.

Chief Scarbrough is an Executive Fire Officer graduate from the National Fire Academy, has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science and a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management with a minor in Homeland Security. He is a graduate of the International Association of Fire Chief ’s Executive Chief Officer Development Program.

Chief Scarbrough serves as a member of the N.E. Georgia Region 10 EMS Council and he is active in the community through the Rotary Club of Athens and has been involved with Athens Church as a video production volunteer and a small group leader. Chief Scarbrough has been married to his best friend Lynn for the past 41 years, they have two grown daughters, Tabitha and Tiffany who are married, and they have eight grandchildren; four girls and four boys.

Dr. Gullatte is also an Adjunct Faculty at the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. As a Nurse Practitioner, her focus is on primary care in adults. She served seven years as Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Emory University Hospital Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia. Mary is the pastPresident of the National Oncology Nursing Society from 2012 – 2014. She has presented at numerous national and international conferences representing six of the seven continents: including, invited speaker and oncology nurse consultant in Ghana, West Africa, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Brazil, Amsterdam, Turkey, Oman-UAE, Thailand, China, United Kingdom, Brussels, France, Philippines, and New Zealand. Dr. Gullatte has gratuitously contributed to the body of published professional literature through articles and textbooks. Her recent book, 21st Century Nursing Leadership received Book of the Year honors in 2018 by the American Journal of Nursing. She is the lead editor of the 4th Edition of the 2020 Chemotherapy Handbook. Throughout her career, Dr. Gullatte has received numerous awards and recognitions for her meritorious professional and community service. In 2020, Dr. Gullatte was honored as Distinguished Nurse of the Year from the Atlanta March of Dimes. Dr. Gullatte is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Currently, Dr. Gullatte serves on the Boards of the Nursing Services Organization and Georgia Nurses Association & Foundation [GNA/GNF]. She led the GNA/GNF Task Force in publishing a Policy Brief on Advancing Health Equity in Georgia. Dr. Gullatte is the executive sponsor and founder of the Emory Nurse Health Policy, Legislative, and Advocacy Council. She enjoys mentoring, empowering, and inspiring future generations of nurses to excel and achieve greatness beyond their imagination. Her palpability to revolutionize healthcare by preventing disease, improving patient and provider outcomes, and their wellbeing is indisputable. He is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Executive, and PsychiatricMental Health Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Hooks has over 33 years of registered nurse experience in many clinical care areas and 21 years of experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner. He has responsibility for the College of Health’s undergraduate and graduate academic programs (Dental Hygiene, Health Care Management, Health and Fitness Management, Health Sciences, and Nursing) as well as all business and operational functions of the College. He completed his BSN and MN degrees at Augusta University College of Nursing in 1989 and in 2002, respectively. Dr. Hooks completed his PhD in Nursing at the University of Kansas in 2015 and a graduate certificate as a Psychiatric-Mental Nurse Practitioner from the George Washington University in 2022.

Dr. Hooks is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and had served in the Chief Nurse Executive role for large multi-hospital systems in Georgia and North Carolina.

He has taught in BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD nursing programs and has served on DNP and PhD student teams/committees.

Dr. Hooks has had clinical practice in primary care, infectious disease, pulmonology, family, and nurse-led practices. Dr. Hooks’ scholarship interests are varied and include rare neuromuscular diseases, nurse staffing and productivity, interprofessional care and collaboration, nurse practitioner program curricula, specifically the DNP final scholarly work, nurse faculty clinical practice, as well as the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Dr. Hooks is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and his recent clinical work focuses on creating innovative patient care models utilizing registered nurses and advanced practice nurses to their highest levels of education, experience, and licensure. Dr. Hooks was a recipient of a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) training grant aimed at increasing the use of professional registered nurses, in collaboration with advanced practice registered nurses and other interprofessional team members, in ambulatory care environments. He also received a HRSAfunded training grant focused on the creation of integrated behavioral and physical health practices.

Dr. Hooks is active nationally in the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) serving on the Board of Directors and as the Board Liaison to the Finance, Capital Development and Marketing Committee. He also completed the NONPF Leadership Program Fellowship. He is also a member of the Academy of Judges for the annual Sharecare Awards program. Dr. Rojas currently serves as Director for the Medical Intensive Care Unit Curriculum in Graduate Medical Education. She is responsible for the education of physician residents from various specialties throughout the healthcare system whom rotate through the intensive care unit.

In addition, she also serves as Director for the Pulmonology Curriculum in Graduate Medical Education. Starting in 2019, Dr. Raybon-Rojas has been serving as Chair for the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team at NGHS charged with creating a multi-disciplinary approach for the care of patients acutely suffering from pulmonary emboli and sequela. Her role also extends as serving as principal investigator for the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team consortium registry.

Since the start of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, she has been a leader at the forefront for the health system helping navigate patient care needs and the expansion of medical intensive care services at various hospitals within the healthcare system. Her efforts have led to the mobilization of multiple medical intensive care units, restructuring of hospital units to meet patient needs, and assistance in critical staffing efforts to ensure patients were cared for. She was also responsible for ensuring the ongoing education of resident physicians throughout this time while contributing research at multiple annually held conferences including those from the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Critical Care Medicine and American College of Physicians - Georgia chapter.

Dr. Erine Raybon-Rojas A graduate of Ross University School of Medicine in 2008, Dr. Erine Raybon-Rojas has exemplified the innate potential graduates are able to achieve.

Her journey has been recognized within the three disciplines of patient care, graduate medical education, and ongoing community outreach. She completed both her Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship Training from Henry Ford Hospital/Wayne State University in 2012, and 2015 respectively. She then served as pulmonary and critical care faculty until her move to Gainesville Georgia. Since then, she has been a physician leader at Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) advocating for her patients in a multitude of ways.

During these critical months for the system, Dr. Raybon-Rojas also pioneered the Provider Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce, a first for the health system. Her efforts continue to help NGHS ensure employees, patients and their families from all walks of life feel included, cared, and heard for as they receive care at all levels within the institution. The taskforce is also responsible for education and is actively overseeing cutting-edge research within the diversity, equity, and inclusion space qualifying for grants for further investigative studies. She has been awarded educational grants for DEI and her work as been showcased at national conferences across the country. Her efforts have positively impacted the community at large by creating a youth empowerment mentorship with positive-exposure platforms for underrepresented communities interested in healthcare careers. The efforts of this taskforce also transcend directly into resident education as she serves as Director for Diversity Equity and Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education for Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Professor and Chair of Dept of Internal Medicine for Ross University School of Medicine.

Her ongoing efforts continue to put patient-care at the forefront and she now provides insights and ongoing advocacy through her role as Vice Chair of Medicine at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Her ongoing and multi-disciplinary pursuits through patient care and graduate medical education also allow her to serve her community and positively affect the upcoming class of physicians.

Audrey Arona, M.D. Dr. Arona obtained her Bachelor of Science at the Univ. of California, San Diego, dual majoring in biochemistry and cellular biology. She graduated with her M.D. license in 1991 from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and thereafter, completed an OB/GYN Residency in 1995 from the University of Southern California. She is a member of and Board Certified with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of and previous Board member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Arona practiced OB/GYN in private practice for 29 years, delivering thousands of babies and specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders affecting women of all ages. She has and continues to mentor and train physicians, residents, nurse practitioners and other clinical staff.

Dr. Arona is an entrepreneur and has received a United States patent on a medical instrument.

In 2012, Dr. Arona served as a consultant to the GNR Public Health District and thereafter became their Medical Director.

Since 2019, Dr. Arona has served as CEO and District Health Director for GNR Public Health and has worked with many community partners to address areas of need, specifically infectious disease, mental health, substance abuse, and infant/maternal

mortality.

Dr. Arona has been instrumental in our fight against the COVID-19 virus, leading our community in collaboration with community partners, churches, non-profit organizations, local county and city officials, healthcare groups and businesses. She has led her team of passionate public health professionals during this pandemic, addressing local community needs, serving as a national model for COVID operations and communications, and working with community leaders to save lives.

Felicia J. Elibert’s story starts in the small town of LaGrange, Georgia. In that small town, she dreamed big; inspired by strong, female mentors like her mother, to chase her goals with tenacity and determination.

With this support, Felicia, RN, BSN graduated from The College of New Rochelle, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

She prides herself on striking a balance between career and personal life, as she is a loving mother of two incredible sons and an amazing partner to her husband Winchel Elibert.

Felicia has held several healthcare positions throughout metro Atlanta where she specialized in Med Surg, Telemetry, and ER medicine. However, her experiences stretch beyond the borders of Georgia, with several travel assignments impacting patient lives throughout the country.

In 2003, Felicia decided to pursue her entrepreneurial career. It all started with a series of her own colon hydrotherapy sessions - the benefits of which changed her life. Major Anna Sanchez, RN Major Anna Sanchez has worked in healthcare for over 37 years. She is a Clinical Nurse for the 94 Aeromedical Staging Squadron and provides her clinical expertise in the Nursing Officer Core and Senior Noncommissioned Officers. She educates members on the Comprehensive Medical Readiness Program. She delivers a full spectrum of resources to the service members. She educates the Total Force (TF) Airmen that directly influences mental wellness, and deployment readiness.

She is D-SAACP certified and is a subject matter expert in the care for those who experience military sexual trauma She served as the Coordinator for the Sexual Assault and Response Program at Dobbins Air Reserve Base (ARB), Georgia. She single handedly organized a successful event where Distinguished Visitors and guests, Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen learned different forms of therapy for trauma survivors such as Art Therapy, Horticultural Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Pet Therapy, Equine Therapy. She deployed in South Korea to overhaul the SAPR program where she successfully engaged in service members, and the Republic of Korea Air Force.

Major Sanchez began serving the United States Air Force in Aug 2011. She graduated from the Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), Montgomery, AL in Sept 2012. She served as Officer-in-Charge at the 908th Aeromedical Staging Squadron Mental Health Section where she educated members on suicide prevention and substance abuse programs. She earned her Master Resiliency Trainer certification and personally trained over 400 service members on three installations as Resiliency Training Assistants., In her civilian capacity, Major Sanchez delivers excellent advanced practice care at the VA Hospital in ATL as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department. She is the Executive Director for Hope Center for Veterans and is an active Board Member for VETLANTA where she actively volunteers and engages in the community to empower Veterans.

Major Sanchez received a distinguished award as the United States Air Force Reserve Command 2020 Company Grade Officer Nurse of the Year. Dr. Mary Jo Lechowicz Mary Jo Lechowicz, MD, joined Emory from the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in oncology. Dr. Lechowicz is Board Certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. Dr. Lechowicz’s research interests are in hematologic malignancies. She has been a principal investigator and co-principal investigator on a number of national and international clinical trials involving the treatment of patients with virally related cancers and particularly T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Dr. Lechowicz is currently active in the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Association of Cancer Research. She is a member of the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program at Winship.

Dr. Lechowicz earned her medical degree from SUNY-Syracuse in Syracuse, New York. She completed her internship and residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, New York where she was Chief Resident. She then completed a Fellowship at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Lechowicz’s research interests are in hematologic malignancies, specifically T cell lymphomas. Her interest in HIV and malignancies began with her training at Johns Hopkins. She is the primary investigator for a number of trials at Emory University with regard to improvement of care in non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, particularly related to transplantation and diffused B-cell lymphomas; cutaneous and peripheral lymphomas; T-cell lymphomas; and HIV and lymphoma care.

Dr. Lechowicz was editor for the American Society of Hematology Daily News in 2010. She has served on multiple committees including the United States Cutaneous Lymphoma Consortium, American Society of Hematology, the Ethics Committee at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s Lymphoma Awareness Multicultural Population Advisory Committee.

Rep. Alan Powell Alan Powell is a Representative for the Georgia House of Representatives and is a member of the Homeland Security Board. Born November 10th in Hartwell, Georgia, Representative Alan Powell graduated from Hart County High School. He later attended Georgia Southwestern College, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Political Science. He has been a lifelong resident of Hartwell, and resides on the shores of Lake Hartwell. Dr. Jeremy S. Nelson was born on March 21, 1981 in Macon, GA. where he lived with his mother and two sisters. He attended Central High School in Macon, GA and graduated with honors in the International Baccalaureate Program. Dr. Nelson then decided to join Dawg Nation and embarked upon a long journey to Athens, GA. He attended the University of Georgia on a full scholarship and was a member of the football team. Graduating from UGA in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a concentration in cellular biology, Dr. Nelson traveled to Music City, where he attended Meharry Medical College. During his matriculation through Meharry, Dr. Nelson became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and has received several additional accolades.

After completing his medical education, Dr. Nelson began general surgery residency at University of Texas Southwestern in 2008. After completing two years of residency, Dr. Nelson realized he had a passion for emergency medicine and decided to change specialties. He left the General Surgery Residency Program at UT Southwestern in good standing and with full recommendation from his program director. In 2011, Dr. Nelson matched into his first choice, Emory University Emergency Medicine Residency Program and relocated to Atlanta, GA. He completed EM Residency in 2014.

Since residency, Dr. Nelson has worked in the Emergency Department for WellStar and Northside Hospitals across Metro Atlanta as an Attending Physician, Interim Medical Director, and Patient Experience Physician Champion.

The idea of Purifi IV was started during the pandemic, as the need for IV hydration was on the rise, but the risks of coming to an ED to receive it, seemingly outweighed the benefit. Dezmond Sherrod Dezmond Sherrod is a native of Columbus, MS. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University where he played on the football team under the tutelage of Head Coach Sylvester Croom (200307) that eventually catapulted him into a career of greatness. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management and Financial Planning in 2006 and a Masters Degree in General Business Administration in 2008.

Dezmond Sherrod became known both off and on the field as he entered into the National Football League. He helped win Super Bowl XLIII with the Pittsburgh Steelers in2009, defeating the Arizona Cardinals. He has played in the UFL (United Football League) and won the 2010 UFL Championship. Sherrod joined the Fire Department in 2017, after ending a four year career playing professional football and five years as a manager with Target. He is employed with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services as a Firemedic Senior (Firefighter and Paramedic) with five years of service and is currently at Station 31 in Lawrenceville, GA. He is the husband to his lovely wife, Tiffany Sherrod, with two children, three year-old daughter, Raign (pronounced like Rain) and one year- old son, Drew.

Sherrod transitioned into his profession as a firemedic because of his genuine love for helping people, and his desire to make a positive impact on society and his community. “As a first responder in emergency situations, I get the privilege of being one of the first of many healthcare professionals that assist and help people in a variety of ways and sometimes during the most difficult part of their lives. I take great pride in knowing that the citizens of Gwinnett County receive our best efforts to help them during their time of need.” Sherrod considers himself as someone who looks at the big picture in the grand scheme of life.

Realizing that oftentimes in emergency situations, the outcomes can be less desirable, but Sherrod is resolved with the knowledge of knowing that at the end of his life, he will be able to say that he has given his best efforts to make a positive impact on his family, co-workers and community. Lyndon Jones, RN I am a former EMT/Paramedic with 16 years of experience. My prehospital EMS life started in Brooklyn, New York (2000-06) where I also served during 911. I am blessed to be alive. Afterwards, my wife and I, along with our three children relocated to Georgia. It was then that I began my tenure with Grady EMS. (20062016) During that time, I began to pursue my nursing degree, never having attended college since leaving my home in Trinidad, Tobago at the age of 17. I successfully graduated from Clayton State University in 2012. Subsequently, I transferred from Grady EMS, and started working in Grady’s renown Emergency Department for another five years. Dr. Lisa Marie Reyes-Walsh Dr. Lisa Marie Reyes-Walsh has a fervor for learning.

She achieved her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kennesaw State University, then completed her Master in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner from Walden Univerisity. Next, she received her post Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate from Georgia Southern University. Then she continued her education journey, receiving her Doctor of Nursing Practice, Health System Leadership degree from Emory University in 2021. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Nursing Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Reyes-Walsh is an advanced practice registered nurse specializing in mental health wellness and has practiced in a variety of settings. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with additional certifications as a Family Nurse Practitioner and an advanced practice addiction nurse, Dr. Reyes-Walsh provides holistic, trauma-informed care to every client she meets. Besides having a passion for mental health patient care, she also loves teaching nursing students.

Dr. Reyes-Walsh enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience with students about mental health wellness. She has been teaching in academia since 2015.

Seferino Patino

Executive Director HHCP INC Seferino Patino is the Executive Director of HHCP. Seferino joined the HHCP family in September 2021. His passion for healthcare, as well as bringing more caregivers back to the bedside is what our mission and goal is at HHCP. Seferino has been in the healthcare industry for 13 years and counting. Early in his career, he began in the human services field working with adults with developmental disabilities. Seferino worked in the healthcare field for about a year before making a significant change in career to law enforcement. Seferino spent six years and worked his way up to the rank of Sergeant. What drew Seferino to Law Enforcement was growing up and seeing his uncle pursue his goals and dreams of being in Law Enforcement. Although Seferino enjoyed his career, he went back to his true calling, human services. After a few other career changes, Seferino always came back to the healthcare field where he knew God placed him, which is his passion and calling.

Caring for our aging population has given Seferino a renewed sense of being and purpose. “Serving our seniors has given me a different lens to look through.” It gives him the opportunity to help those at different stages in life’s journey to assist them in rehabilitation or to comfort them in transition. “Knowing that I am there to help them along this journey called life, is all I can ask for and receiving that second paycheck makes this worthwhile.”

Seferino has enjoyed various positions from Direct Care to Assistant & Residential Services Manager, Senior Living Director of Assisted Living and most recently Director of Memory Care. Seferino is a licensed Senior Living Administrator with the State of Georgia and was recently promoted to oversee both assisted living and memory care neighborhoods with a local senior living facility. Seferino is the proud father to three amazing children, Camden, Melody, and Kymora, proud son of his mother, Patricia Patino, and the best partner a man can ask for, Kiara Holmes. In his leisure time, Seferino enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, and working on cars.

SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLABORAa TION IN EDUCATION Written By: Veronica Jackson, M. Ed. The call for effective school and community collaboration in educating our youths has become more resounding. Increasingly educators as well as people in our business communities are recognizing that if we are to meet the needs of 21st century education standards and the needs of the workforce, then both entities must work together to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge. Additionally, they must seek to provide the range of services and resources that will prepare our youths not only for life in high school but to equip them with the critical thinking skills, as well as hands on work experiences that will better equip them for a post-secondary in their industry of choice.

Community partners are uniquely positioned to help prepare students, not only to be successful during high school, but for college, career, and citizenship, through their various enrichment and support programs. These are programs that can touch on the social- emotional, economic and educational needs of our students. For example, the additional funding that a community partner provides can be used to create paid-internship opportunities for our students. Research has proven that internships create a positive impact for students. Students get the opportunity to jumpstart their professional careers and supplement their courses with hands-on experience. Graduating seniors who applied for a full-time job and participated in an internship received 20% more job offers than those without internship experience (NACE Study, 2019). This should not be a surprise because students, while working on the job, get the opportunity to reinforce what they discuss and are taught in the classroom. Skills like time management, communication, working with others, problem solving, are applied in practical terms in the natural work environment. It is no wonder that students having an opportunity for an internship are better equipped to function more effectively in the work-

place. Of note however, is that because of budgetary constraints, schools have to rely on community partners to provide these opportunities for students. While there are invaluable benefits for the students, the employers also have the privilege of building relationships with and understanding the future employees they get the chance to train.

The opportunity to be placed in an internship in an area that the students are currently viewing as a long term career goal, provides real life experiences that help students make the necessary adaptations or changes for their intended career path.

In addition to the relational and hands-on learning benefits, the economic benefits to those who have a paid internship, bring welcome financial relief for many. Most internship programs provided by our community organizations also give much attention to the inclusion of programs and resources that address the social emotional well-being of the students. Certainly this is an area especially in the post COVID era that cannot be overlooked as we look forward to building a strong and resilient workforce in all areas.

As we continue to see the benefits/ impact of partnerships in education, it is incumbent on our school leaders, community based organizations, parents, and business partners to forge ahead to create more partnerships. Partnerships where there are clear goals, expectations, accountability, and evaluative systems that give consideration to the learning needs of our young people and the wider community and world they will serve. It is our belief that growth in productive partnerships will pave the way for educating our youth not just for today but for the century ahead.

Empowering Change and Upholding Justice Sheriff Melody M. Maddox's Transformative Leadership In the realm of law enforcement, the face of leadership is evolving, and Sheriff Melody M. Maddox is at the forefront of this transformation. A native of Atlanta, Sheriff Maddox has not only broken barriers but also shattered glass ceilings, leaving an indelible mark on DeKalb County and the state of Georgia as a whole.

With her official inauguration on December 1, 2019, Sheriff Maddox took the reins as DeKalb County's 50th sheriff, marking a significant moment in history. Sworn in by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson, she became not only the second woman to hold the title of Sheriff in Georgia but also the first woman to take on this influential role in the county.

Before her ascension to the role of sheriff, Sheriff Maddox's journey in law enforcement was marked by determination and dedication. Her career started in 1996 as a Detention Technician in the Jail Division of the sheriff 's office. She later joined the DeKalb County Police Department in 1997, embarking on a decade-long journey of increasing responsibilities, from Master Police Officer to Chief Aide, Crimes Analysis Officer, and Field Training Officer.

Sheriff Maddox's commitment to her profession is exemplified by her Georgia P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification. Her dedication to professional development is evidenced by her completion of training programs in Emergency Management and Information Command Systems, as well as her status as a P.O.S.T. Certified General Instructor in ethics, integrity, professionalism, and defensive tactics.

Beyond her role in law enforcement, Sheriff Maddox is a multifaceted leader. She holds a bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College and a master's degree from Central Michigan University. Her educational journey also led her to Newburgh Theological Seminary and Bible College, where she cultivated her spiritual and intellectual growth.

As the CEO of Woman 2 Woman Personal Awareness and Safety Training (P.A.S.T), Sheriff Maddox actively

Ciara Green, LCFW Ciara Green is currently CEO of Family Ties, Inc., a social service agency serving over 6,000 families a year in the metropolitan Atlanta area. She also serves as Chief Compliance Officer of the agency’s parent company - Family Ties Enterprises.

Ciara has had an extensive career in social work. As an undergrad, she worked with at-risk and special needs youth in Lee County, Opelika Alabama. As a graduate student, she counseled at-risk teenage females placed in group homes. Her philosophy was an intent to create spaces where youth could be exposed to opportunities not readily available in their current lives. (She continues to mentor some of those same women today.) In 2007, Ciara changed course slightly and began working at the International Rescue Committee providing marriage and resettlement counseling to newly arrived refugees. Later, she accepted a position at the Veterans Hospital working with U.S. veterans experiencing psychiatric and community adjustment challenges. As her career developed, Ciara began working at her family’s mental health agency. Today, as CEO of a company with a 28+ year history in Georgia, her focus is on children and adolescents suffering from abuse, neglect or carrying a diagnosed mental illness. Ciara has moved the agency to a focus on trauma-based work, evidence-based interventions and therapeutic didactics that center on such work.

Under her management, Family Ties provides care to families in 13 Georgia counties and employs over 165 clinicians through contracts with the Departments of Juvenile Justice; the Department of Children and Family services; local and regional hospitals; 4 major school systems servicing 102 schools for in school mental health counseling, and governing boards across Georgia.

Ciara is also the owner of All Things Sublime LLC - a merger of her catering business and lifestyle blog. It has been featured on the national level by multiple media sites and had recipe content published in the cookbook, Grandmas and Grandkids: Legacies of Love and Wisdom. The lifestyle blog focuses on cooking, traveling adventures, parenting milestones, crafting, literature, and fashion intended to captivate and encourage her readers to live in the moment with the ones who matter most. The blog mirrors Ciara’s motto of “family always takes precedent over any work she takes on.”

For community work, Ciara is on the Advisory Board of Hughes Spalding Hospital. Rep. Dr. Jasmine Clark District 108

Dr. Jasmine Clark was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 26, 1982. At a very young age, Jasmine realized her passion for the sciences and aspired to follow in the footsteps of her father and one day be a doctor. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in microbiology, from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 2005. She then went on to receive her doctoral degree from Emory University’s Laney Graduate School in microbiology and molecular genetics in 2013 after publishing her work on retroviral particle tracking using live cell imaging microscopy. Subsequently, in 2014, she completed a postdoctoral project at Emory University, studying high-throughput sequencing of HIV patient samples. Jasmine currently serves as a lecturer of microbiology and human anatomy and physiology at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. On November 6, 2018, she was elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives, where she currently serves as the state representative of House District 108, covering the Lilburn and Mountain Park areas of Gwinnett County.

Along with her academic and professional accomplishments, Jasmine is a mother of two, currently residing in the Lilburn/Tucker area of Gwinnett County.

When she is not teaching at Emory or legislating at the State Capitol, you can usually find her at one of her children’s soccer games or track meets, or with a microphone in her hand singing karaoke. Her personal philosophy can be summed up in the following quote by the late Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Rep. Chuck Efstration District 104

Charles P. Efstration, III (“Chuck”) represents House District 104, which includes the Dacula, Lawrenceville, Auburn, Braselton and Bethlehem areas of Gwinnett County. A former assistant district attorney and Chairman of the Gwinnett County Republican Party, Chuck Efstration was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives on December 13, 2013.

Efstration grew up in Gwinnett County, earned his Eagle Scout with a Gwinnett Boy Scout troop and graduated from Greater Atlanta Christian School. Chuck’s mother was a longtime educator with Gwinnett County Public Schools, beginning her teaching career in 1973. Chuck’s father worked at the Western Electric factory in Gwinnett County in the early 1970s after graduating from Georgia Tech and receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. Chuck is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs, where he earned his degree in three years. While an undergraduate student, Chuck worked in two legislative sessions of the Georgia General Assembly, serving as an aide to the governor’s floor leader and as an aide to the Senate Public Safety Committee. Efstration went on to obtain his Juris Doctor from Mercer Law School in Macon. At Mercer, Chuck was a competition member of the moot court team and was elected by his peers as chief justice of the Honor Court.

After graduating from law school, Chuck returned to his hometown area of Dacula and worked in law enforcement as a felony prosecutor. As a Gwinnett County assistant district attorney, Efstration conducted jury and bench trials prosecuting offenses

including murder, rape, armed robbery, child molestation, drug possession and sale, domestic violence, computer crimes, DUI and theft. Efstration assisted in criminal investigations, served as an instructor at the Gwinnett County Police Academy and authored several appellate briefs to the Court of Appeals of Georgia and the Supreme Court of Georgia. Chuck also served as a prosecutor for Juvenile Court and the Gwinnett County Drug Court program. Chuck has spent many years assisting conservative candidates for office. In 2009-2010, Chuck served as Chairman of the Gwinnett County Republican Party. Chuck is also a former Chairman of the Georgia Association of College Republicans.

Today, Chuck owns a small business law firm in the Lawrenceville area, and he has been married to his wife, Ashley Leachman Efstration, since 2014. Chuck is a Greek Orthodox Christian. He serves as an officer in the Gwinnett County Bar Association and as a volunteer coach for the Greater Atlanta Christian School mock trial team. In his free time, Chuck enjoys hiking and is an avid University of Georgia football fan. Efstration ran for re-election and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. His current term ends on January 13, 2025.

During the 2019 legislative session, she introduced legislation that would create a grant program to encourage certain physicians to practice in underserved areas of the state. Rep. Schofield has also advocated for expanding Medicaid and has helped pass homestead exemptions for senior citizens in her district. She has also worked to improve workplace equity, pay equity, and she advocates for environmental justice and agriculture. Kim’s professional career spans across healthcare, financial, transportation, education and non-profit agencies. Kim has more than 15 years of experience in consulting, coaching, teaching, training workshops and engagement seminars, bringing alignment within political, corporate, community, law enforcement, healthcare and faithbased organizations. Kim is a small business owner. As a personal development strategist, her coaching practice, Other People’s Potential Coaching, works with individuals and organizations to position them for maximizing their capacity.

Kim holds a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Theology and Organizational Leadership, and a Doctorate from Oral Roberts University. In her health policy work, Kim was appointed by former Governor Nathan Deal to serve as the Chair of the Georgia Council on Lupus Education and Awareness. She holds a federal appointment to the Health IT Policy Committee and crafts legislative policy recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT as a framework for the development and adoption of a nationwide health information infrastructure. Kim has also worked as a lupus research specialist at the Emory School of Medicine, and she serves as an Advocacy Chair for the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America. Kim has authored several articles and has been a recurring guest on television, radio and other media outlets. Kim is the proud mother of her daughter, Kyler, a 2012 graduate of Duke University; Kyler is an assistant director in film and television and a member of the Directors Guild of America.

WORK LIFE CHOICES Mary Magee Gullatte, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, AOCN, LSSYB, FAAN

A skilled, strong, diverse, and healthy workforce is imperative to a thriving and successful healthcare system responsible for care of patients to achieve best health outcomes. Healthcare workers have faced unimaginable physical and emotional challenges, including labor and supply chain shortages, over the past three years working in conditions never faced in our lifetime due to the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthcare systems have incurred billions of dollars in unexpected expenses and lost revenue, over the past three years, resulting from direct and indirect effects of the pandemic. A healthy, empathetic, and compassionate workforce are foundational to a strong and vibrant healthcare system and access to quality and safe patient care.

The compassion fatigue, grief, burnout, and stress expressed by healthcare workers are real. These challenges and conditions have resulted in high turnover and reduced staff satisfaction and engagement as hospitals and healthcare systems face ongoing labor shortages.

No one could have predicted that the pandemic would last over three years and counting. Workforce resiliency and physical and mental self-care have been top of mind for healthcare organizations trying to recover and rebuild a stable and viable workforce. The focus on creating and sustaining a healthy work environment is one strategy to strengthen & rebuild a healthcare workforce, and reduce turnover and burnout among workers.

Healthcare colleagues have expressed being challenged with trying to find work-life balance in an effort to reduce stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout and restore engagement, compassion, and empathy. I contend that work-life balance begins with personal work-life CHOICES. Those choices have to be made by the individual not declared by the employer. Each healthcare worker has to make personal choices as to when to take some time away from work to reflect, rejuve-

nate, restore, and regain inner peace and tranquility.

These choices need to be intentional before one is at the breaking point. Without caring for self, one cannot care for others including those we love and the patients entrusted in our care and our coworkers.

Strategies to consider for self-care begin with a conscious CHOICE. A choice to plan a long weekend or an extra day off just to care for yourself and spend quality time with your loved ones. Consider a staycation. When was the last time you took a real vacation with family and or friends? Reflect on what is fun for you. Take a walk and enjoy some private time to reconnect with what makes you happy. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the change of seasons. Spring is a time of nature’s expression of renewal and rebirth as evidence by the flowering trees and the return of green grass and colorful spring flowers. Enjoy some ‘me’ time to remind yourself what is important in life and what legacy you want to leave for your family. For some it might be reconnecting with your mind, body, and spirit. Schedule your annual physical and above all take care of your mental health. Perhaps a visit to a spa to pamper yourself. Meditate. Read a book for fun. Visit a fitness center to shed those extra COVID pounds☺.

Reconnect with your spiritual self and what makes YOU happy and fulfilled. Considering and being intentional about the CHOICES we make will translate into balance in your life of all the things that are important to you. A healthy and self-fulfilled workforce will translate into reduced burnout, restored capacity for compassion and empathy, retention, reduced turnover, improved job satisfaction and organizational financial health. Remember the road to restoring work-life balance begins with personal work-life CHOICES. Make a CHOICE to care for your physical, emotional, and spiritual self. You are the only one who can decide when and what that entails. Just do it!
