a list of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.

Most of us that live in a fortunate world have a bucket list. The problems with those lists are often affordability and a concept called time.

Many of us just don’t get around to our bucket lists, and time passes by like a runaway freight train.

I am an avid reader of books and a lover of cool publications for their content, photos, design, and even ads on occasion. So, I decided to include creating a ‘cool’ publication of some of my favorite interests in my bucket list. I had no idea how to create one (I hope that’s not obvious). I have never written an article either, before now. But here we are, and here it is.

A bucket list does not have to include flying through Alpine valleys in a wingsuit, tripping the Siberian Railway, or nude skydiving (on my list).

It can be visiting a family member or friend you have not seen in years. It can be having a picnic at the Wind Farm in Rio Vista with the love of your life. Or, it can be working in the summer at the local mall as a mime (also on my list).

However, it is most important to remember that many people’s bucket list is a meal, sobriety, clean water, or maybe a home. So, include a way

to help others in your list as many times as you can while you chase your dreams.

I hope the magazine will show well the things I intended and that you learn more about the wonders, organizations, businesses, and people that make this city what it is. I also hope my passion for interesting/educational content, new discoveries, striking images, and helping others comes through.

If you enjoy my creation, please spread the word. Forward the link to the online version to as many people as you can, and please recycle the print version rather than throwing it away. Best yet, give it to a friend or just let it relax on your coffee table, counter, or bedside.

If the magazine is not successful, I will go to work on a farm (which, by the way, has always been on my bucket list).

Zen & T he Sea Part I: A History

h en people think of surfing in Florida, West Palm Beach would not be high on anyone’s list. Apart from the fact it does not technically have a beach (Palm Beach Island being the closest), the West Palm Beach area is home to both a rich surf history and budding surf culture.

With the warm blue waters of the Gulf Stream, paired with a deep continental shelf a mere two miles offshore, this area has been known to produce some of the largest waves on the entire Eastern Seaboard... not just in Florida. These large swells typically happen between the months of September and April, when hurricanes and winter storms spin off our coast and generate waves onto our local beaches. However, as most residents know regarding hurricane season,

with pleasure comes pain. Floridians are aware that all it takes is one storm to ultimately change your life.

Such was the case on September 7th, 1965, when Hurricane Betsy ran aground a 442-foot Greek freighter, the Amaryllis, on nearby Singer Island.

While many were negatively affected by the storm’s impact, local surfers could hardly believe what they saw. A perfect sandbar began to form off the stern of the beached ship. The size of the hull was also large enough to block onshore winds, keeping the surf glassy even when other areas were choppy, blown out, and otherwise undesirable for wave-riding. A vibrant local surf scene was quick to develop, bringing surfing’s golden age into focus in Florida.

l though the sport had rich roots in California, Floridians put their own spin on it, carving out a unique style that was tailor-made for the waves found in their area. This break became a magnet for surfers all over the state, even playing host to a famed Dewey Weber surf contest in 1967. All the fun came to an end soon after in August of 1968, when the Army Corps of Engineers towed the vessel nearly a mile out to sea. It was subsequently sunk in 85 feet of water to create an artificial reef. Fortunately for us, this wasn’t the last we heard of the Amaryllis, thanks to postman and photographer M.E. Gruber.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Gruber painstakingly documented the history of surfing in the area by taking more than 5,000 Kodachrome slides of the burgeoning sport. Many of his images were of the surf scene surrounding the Amaryllis, or “the ship,” as it was referred to at the time. Gruber produced slideshows and movie nights at community centers for local surfers, in a time when the surfing community had very few outlets.

Most surf media at the time was limited to magazines, which almost always focused on faraway waves that the Florida surfer could not relate to. These Californiabased magazines took weeks or even months to reach the surfers on the east coast, further deepening the

need for a surf culture more unique to Florida. Gruber’s photographs captured the development of this local surf scene. Decades later, his imagery of Florida surfers served as a priceless time capsule, but it wasn’t long before they were almost entirely forgotten.

Luckily, Palm Beach County surfer Fred Salmon had kept in touch with Mr. Gruber. Following his death, the Gruber family provided Fred with the entire collection of his photographs. Knowing their historical value, three other long-time local surfers immediately volunteered to help Fred with the curation of the project at hand. Corky Roche, Tom Warnke, and Bill Keeton joined Fred as the founding members of a nonprofit, charitable organization named The Palm Beach County Surfing History Project, and would go on to create the Surfing Florida Museum.

The museum’s primary goal is preserving the unique history of surfing in Florida, with an emphasis on Palm Beach County. Although the museum is currently closed due to the pandemic, they are still accepting donations and volunteers.

Nowadays, the local ‘surf stoke’ is at an all-time high.

It is estimated that there has been an increase in the general population of surfers by as much as 30% post Covid-19. Surf product demand is at an all-time high, and local surf shops are cashing in with no signs of slowing

down. Rightfully so, as surfing has been labeled as a healthy and safe activity during the pandemic, and many have taken refuge in the ocean this past year. What our area lacks in wave consistency it makes up for in a vibrant surf community and culture. Cruise over the bridge on any given winter morning, and you’ll see everything from traveling professional surfers making the most of a swell to PBA students learning to ride waves on foam boards. Dig a

little deeper and you’ll find a slew of talented surf-centric locals creating art by building boards, taking photographs, making music, and filming movies – all adjusting and timing their schedules around that perfect two hour window of surf.

For many of us in West Palm, surfing is much more than just a hobby or sport – it’s a way of life. Pretty crazy considering we don’t technically have a beach.

Part II: Sound Waves

W

here does Brett Staska come from? That third 10ft break behind him on the cover of this magazine? Seems so, since he appears so comfortable and serene in his surroundings as they curl, crash, and explode around him. It seems he approaches his writing and music the same way, and maybe that’s why he is so versatile doing his own thing and playing (nicely) with others.

That photo, which I took in the late afternoon of Oct 28th, 2012, was my first introduction to Staska. I eventually found out who he was after I posted the picture on my Facebook surf photography page and was able to get the picture to him – because it’s kind of epic. Staska, a Florida native from Loxahatchee, enjoys both best worlds many of us wish we could inhabit – music and surfing – and seemingly effortlessly. On the water he is a multi-instrumentalist, surfing long and short boards; and as a musician the same, playing bass and guitar and ukulele. Staska is a solo artist most of the time and calls his music Sunburnt

Folk Rock. You can find him playing all over SE Florida. Staska also plays with his mates in a very groovy reggae band.

I hung out one night with Roots Shakedown at their graffiti-covered warehouse space during one of their practice sessions, which focused on working out three new songs. Roots was founded by Staska and Tony Contreras in 2008, and is full-on reggae funk.

Staska mostly plays bass and handles some of the vocals. Tony Contreras is on guitar and vocals, Alex Burgess on keys, and Harley Galeano on drums. I got to watch the creative process as well as the surf videos playing from the projector upstairs to a screen on the wall. It’s a perfect mix, really. They are recording music concepts using vintage instruments and processes that they want to keep under wraps for now, but they are itching to release their next full-length album after seven years of working on it.

How long have you been playing music?

I started writing songs when I was 15, and I am now 33. So 18 years. Wow, time flies!

Yes, that day and swell was one to remember. Local pro Peter Mendia also landed the cover of Surfer Magazine that day.

With that being said, it was also an extremely strong storm that devastated parts of the Northeast. Life of an East Coast surfer during hurricane season; you take the good with the bad.

You are a surfer, as the cover of this magazine would suggest.

Are there any connections between surfing and music, and does it help you in any way do you think with one and the other and vice versa?

Absolutely. I think there is a strong connection between surfing and music. Both are completely open to artistic interpretation. No right or wrong. No scoreboard. As far as inspiration, I can think of many times when I’d be in the water waiting for waves while humming melodies to song ideas.

And on the other hand, shaping surfboards while listening to music the whole time.

Speaking of the cover, Hurricane Sandy passed by, really stirring things up enough to even get 8-time World Champion Kelley Slater out there. He was just on the other side of the inlet about 200 yards from where you are in

We all know that Covid put everyone behind, and especially in the entertainment industry.

On a positive note though, did it result in any new epiphanies for you, or at least much needed writing time resulting in some good material?

I think the pandemic has been a chance for musicians (and people in general) to take a long look at themselves and ask, “What do you want?” All those things you were putting off and didn’t have the time to do, now is the time. Go chase it! I know financially it was a blow for almost everyone in the industry.

People aren’t making money off records anymore. It’s all touring and merchandising. Artistically

we may have fared better. I think we will be seeing a lot of great new music being released in the coming year. Personally, I have two new records ready to go and a slew of videos to accompany them.

Have you or your band played for anyone or any organization or business that really blew you away as far as a life experience?

Around 2010 my reggae band, Roots Shakedown, was asked by the legendary reggae band Inner Circle to be a part of their Reggae Wave project; a compilation of the premier reggae acts in Florida, including The Resolvers, Spred the Dub, Mixed Culture, and others. We got to work on two original songs at the famed Circle House studios in Miami. The experience culminated at the Adrienne Arts Center for the Performing Arts where we got to open for both Inner Circle and Third World. It just blew me away that these reggae legends handpicked us to be a part of something so special.

A truly unforgettable experience.

You are young, so you have plenty of time to accomplish a

lot more and you are on a great path in my opinion, but do you ever have ambitions to be the next big band/artist or do you just like playing and creating your music, surfing, and working on even more projects?

This is something I often ask myself. Of course there is drive and desire to be bigger and better. Always. However, if I can put a roof over my head and food on the table by performing my songs with my own two hands then I already feel like the luckiest man alive. My focus is to create, whether it be through song or sea.

Do you have a favorite local charitable organization?

I am on the board for the Surfing Florida Museum, whose mission is to preserve and exhibit the history of surfing in Florida with an emphasis on Palm Beach County. A Love of

Vintage

A

café racer is a lightweight, powerful motorcycle optimized for speed and handling rather than comfort – and for quick rides over short distances. With bodywork and control layout recalling early-1960s Grand Prix road racing motorcycles, café racers are noted for their visual minimalism, featuring lowmounted handlebars, prominent seat cowling and elongated fuel tank – and frequently knee-grips indented in the fuel tank. The term originated among British motorcycle enthusiasts of the early 1960s in London, specifically within the Rocker or “Ton-Up Boys” youth subculture, where the bikes were used for short, quick rides between popular cafés – Wikipedia.

Burn Up. I wondered where that term came from. Was it from the Japanese Anime series in the early 90s or from the concept of a ‘burnup chart’ as a visual representation of your project’s progress, or neither of those? Turns out it is a 1950s term for a pickup motorcycle street race. Yes, a much cooler origin to come up with the name for the vintage motorcycle shop that is Burn Up Company. Fonzie did not come to mind, by the way.

The passion and business ideas were hatched in the ‘burbs of New York by David Plotkin, who is originally from Westchester. After a long nationwide search, Plotkin transplanted to Florida with his concepts. The company has thrived down here in the tropics “working through the nuts and bolts” of “old machines” to get them back to where they belong – on the road rumbling low, revving high. In addition to vintage bike sales and service, they have completed hundreds of restorations and dozens of unique custom builds.

As you walk in, there is a sea of vintage bikes (mostly in the café racer category), vintage props and knickknacks to match. You expect to be overwhelmed with the smell of grease, gasoline, and burnt metal. But no. As a matter of fact, it’s just enough to jar anyone’s tendency for nostalgia, grit, and the open road.

There is a love for vintage here.

The new facility is really something and well worth visiting, even if you have never ridden or been on a motorcycle. It’s filled with Nortons, Moto Guzzis, BSAs, Royal Enfields, Triumphs, BMWs, and of course, Hondas, Kawasakis, and others. For the staff and guests there is a pool table and two MANX arcade motorcycle racing games to straddle. Vincent Conti mans the front desk. He is also their marketing director and photographer, and wow does he create the best image for the company. They welcome everyone and can hook you up with a toasty coffee in the center lounge. If you love design like me, you will be in heaven. They have many great bikes in their original condition and many modified to accentuate better their form, function, and sexuality all at the same time. The large warehouse / workshop / museum is located at 917 N Railroad Ave. One of their most unique custom builds is an ode to the one and only Evel Knievel, called ‘Burn-1’, which is modeled after the rocket-propelled prototype ‘X-1 Skycycle’ built as a test vehicle for his famous/infamous attempt to jump the Grand Canyon. Fortunately, they did the test run without him or anyone else in it because that did not end well. The ‘Burn-1’ body is built from the belly tank of an F-86 Sabre fighter jet and is powered by a 43-hp CB450 engine which was the largest motor they could fit inside the fuselage. It is a hybrid of a landWWW.ATLASMEDIAFL.COM | 17

speed streamliner and a mid-century aircraft with working flamethrowers and a suicide shifter with hand-operated clutch.

A mechanic revs a Norton he is working on in the back corner workshop, making sure it purrs perfectly (it’s a little ‘gassier’ back there by the way). I spoke with Steve, a sixty-something salty, who walked by me on his way out from picking up his bike - a CRF 1100 Africa Twin Adventure Sport (a much newer bike than anything Burn Up typically works on - but the client is ‘grandfathered in’ as Plotkin puts it). I asked him about the service here. “It’s amazing and I know from experience...” (he used to be a motorcycle mechanic himself) “...they know what they are doing.

And they kept me informed at every point of the way.

Plotkin tells me about the custom process, which consists of first sitting down with the client to come up with a vision and style. Looking at other customs sometimes helps

that process. A budget is established, in whole or increments. Agreement is made and then the parts are ordered and/or manufactured, and the build begins.

I am in the center lounge finishing my article with inspiration surrounded by bikes, with a breeze blowing in through the front bay door towards the open back bay door, where the railroad tracks and cement factory lay. Also in my sights are shelves of ready-to-saddle gas tanks, racks of mostly vintage helmets of all colors, and a row of cylinder heads on wooden blocks ready to be installed and tuned up tight. It’s a perfect West Palm Beach day; and I could stay for hours just enjoying the shaded breeze, smell of freedom, and mass amounts of eye candy. The large disco ball in the very middle is about the only thing that does not really seem to belong. But I’m ok with it.

What inspired you to open a vintage motorcycle shop?

I was always fascinated by cars, and when I got my first taste of success as a young man, I began to collect and work on them. I quickly ran out of time, space, and money required to continue expanding my car hobby, and quickly realized that I could fill my desire for automotive restoration by transitioning from cars into motorcycles. Once I was bit by the bug, it was a slippery slope.

What is your very favorite bike?

I’m not sure which one I’d call my ‘favorite’, although I do find myself gravitating toward my old Triumph Bonneville with a sidecar. I have the biggest sentimental connection with it and have made the most memories with it too.

Tell me a little about the collection and how do you decide what you are going to keep in your ‘museum’ or sell?

Truly, it boils down to whether a motorcycle speaks to me or not. I’ve curated my

museum collection based on a combination of historical significance and/or whether it evokes emotion.

a m a gigantic fan of The Chairman (Frank Sinatra), and a giant fan of my pal and local singer/phenom Phillipe Harari – The Crooner.

He has performed around the world, including in front of prominent heads of state at Mar-a-Lago Club and for the Inaugural Gala of the last President of the United States. He also maintains corporate and charitable organization engagements, leading

hotels around the world and exclusive member clubs.

Philippe’s incredible versatility visits all genres, going from mostly the great Jazz standards to Andrea Bocelli, Elvis, Barry White, Soul, Pop, Country, Classic Rock and Dance hits that ignite any room.

I was going to write a much longer segment about his story, but after the interview I think he tells it best:

So, that was you in The Godfather...

Sonny Corleone’s son? What a movie to be in, regardless of your role! I had to go and find you on YouTube and see you as a little tike. I was in Boxing Helena for 2 seconds... strange movie. Did you grow up wanting to be an actor because of that?

That’s funny! No, it didn’t cause me to want to be an actor. After all, it could only have been downhill from there. I peaked at 2! But it did have other very impactful effects on my life. I’ve always seen the world in the prism of the Godfather. Insofar as family and loyalty and trust. I literally had to decide in the early part of my adulthood to live a straight life as opposed to be involved in some form of criminal behavior, which was more easily accessible to me growing up in 70’s and 80’s in New York. I don’t imagine that any of that might have been the case as profoundly as it was had the Godfather not been part of my life. Also, I have no problem with my role in the film. I usually carry-on with people asking, if that crying baby weren’t there before Sonny picked up the phone leading to his murder, would the movie really have had any impact? Obviously, I carried the picture and I was willing to do that for Marlon Brando, LOL. When did you know you could sing well?

I still don’t! The need was kinda always there. As a boy I would hide in the car in the garage while everyone was sleeping, to sing with whatever song I could play on the cassette player: and that way no one could hear me. I’m probably a better entertainer than I am a singer. I think people enjoy watching a regular person do what they wish they could do if they had the courage and basic instrument. When I’m singing opera, I really don’t know who that person is.

There’s a blend of rage and love that sits on top of an absurd amount of work and dedication to pull that off. I know that a regular person would never work at something that hard if it wasn’t a need, and the joy I take from singing is unlike any other. Completely fulfilling.

What specifically made you change careers so drastically, because I knew you early on as a finance guy?

Well I’m often credited with having a zen-like courage to pursue my dreams and drop everything else. But the truth is I was helped along by my business blowing up and a perfect storm of horrific experiences that left me with nothing but the desire to please others. When my ambition was no longer wealth and influence and instead became the enjoyment of life and pleasing others, my singing was the best and most effective way to do that. Early on in my life I chose not to be a starving artist; but as wealth and influence passed through my hands, I came to realize that its value is material and fleeting and the value I obtain from pleasing others is very real and far more rewarding then a supercar or a 30,000 ft.² home etc. I know what that life is, but the people who have those things, many of whom are friends, have no idea what wealth I have in being able to make people happy with nothing more than myself and my voice. Even though I’ve been doing this for 10 years now, it still seems like the biggest scam of all time. To be appreciated by people when I haven’t done anything for them. I used to make millions for my clients; and they were marginally grateful, but now all I have to do is perform and they seem to be even more grateful. And they give me money! Strange.

I am blessed to be in that position. And deeply humbled and grateful.

I know you sing different types of music, but what is your favorite to sing?

I am asked that a lot. I really have to say that I don’t have a truly clear favorite. The story ballads with a great lyric might be

my favorite (standards), but the truth is my favorite song to sing is the one that I see is working for the people in front of me. Sometimes that’s pop songs like Billy Joel, sometimes that’s a jamming classic rock song like the Stones or Skynyrd, and often it’s the wow songs from Pavarotti and Bocelli, but the songs that are most requested wherever I sing around the world are songs like My Way by Frank Sinatra. Here in Palm Beach, London, Dubai and Singapore, Hong Kong and where we live in the summer like the south of France, nothing comes close to the requests for the Chairman Frank.

You sing in 4 different languages. What are they?

English, French, Italian and Spanish. It’s kind of the mandatory for languages if you want to have a repertoire that can satisfy 90% of the people most of the time. But again, in France and in Asia, most of the types of places where I would perform are almost exclusively interested in American music. Many of the singers I know in the south of France are all singing American songs with accents and I don’t think they know what they’re saying either, so I kind of have an advantage abroad because I’m actually American.

Nothing makes you prouder to be an American than going abroad.

You are quite international, but what is your favorite place to be, doing what you do?

Perfect segue! I would say the south of France and Italia because we live there in the summer months when it is arguably the most beautiful place on earth. We so appreciate our circle of friends and our life there performing at a fivestar hotel as the sun is setting, watching both the Mediterranean and the mountains with elegant happy affluent people appreciating what you do is hard to compete with. On the other hand, there’s nothing like the grand ballrooms here in Palm Beach or the smaller venues where we’re we surrounded by all the cool fun friends who get together and party hardcore like there’s no tomorrow.

My guess is that you have had quite a few strange experiences at your gigs being in so many kinds of places, but does one stand out?

Oh my God, that’s a hard one to answer. There are many, many strange stories in the decade filled with crazy experiences. It’s so hard to remember because one wild experience becomes replaced with the next one and it just becomes a patchwork of crazy incidents that no one would believe.

I was sandwiched by two older women in a giant field singing at an Italian festival, bumping and grinding at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. But somebody’s got to do it. Then there was the time when a woman fell over the ropes while frantically trying to touch the President, who was headed to the stage and none of the Secret Service agents around him helped to pick her up, so after a minute he finally did. I just stood there on stage watching and wondering when they would lift the carcass off the floor.

I’ve been flashed different body parts by women and men…

Who are some of the people you admire that you have met singing or have been in their presence?

Oh that’s a great question. For the most part I’ve gotten to sing in front of some very affluent people with a lot of influence, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I admire them. I have performed for people who could get anyone they want in the world, but for some reason chose me; and I won’t be talking them out of it. I admire them!! LOL. A groundbreaking geneticist and his archaeologist wife who celebrated their anniversary in New York.

To perform for such exceptional people was an honor.

William Shatner. I’m sorry man, I may have sung for presidents and wealthy people and whoever, but nothing beats singing for Captain Kirk. He’s boldly gone where no man has gone before and somehow liked me! Illogical.

Lee Greenwood. Not only because of his writing and singing but also having sung for 6 or 7 Presidents and having an amazing career and still being as down to earth and real as anyone. A true honor to share the stage with him and get to know him and his wonderful wife.

Frank Sinatra. Yes. I sang in front of Frank Sinatra. After his concert in the Copa room at the Sands in Atlantic City in the early 90s. I and the rest of the audience all spilled out into the Copa lounge where the then unknown John Petrelli was playing with the trio. Frank’s long time pianist Bill Miller was at the bar and I boldly sat down next to him and struck up conversation. He bought me a drink and after hinting that I sang well, he turned to Piscitelli and said, “hey, let this kid sing”.

I did, and to my amazement and the gasping of everyone in the lounge, Sinatra himself walked out and sat at the opposite end of the bar and let’s just say…

I bloomed! The small lounge applauded heartedly for the young punk’s courage, but Frank stood up from his stool and clapped with his hands high enough for me to see them. There is life before you sing for Sinatra and there is life after you sing for Sinatra.

Hardcore giggers that perform every single night.

Some of the finest performers and musicians I’ve ever met have been those that don’t get their fair acclaim or compensation and gig seven nights a week, working their asses off. When I get to perform with them, I’m WWW.ATLASMEDIAFL.COM | 29

Sinatra is my very favorite. What kind of influence does he have on you, if any? And/or is it someone else that has the most influence on you?

I could go on forever discussing Frank. It’s all Sinatra for me. I’m a true connoisseur of his life and his music. It was somewhat of a disturbing obsession through my 20s and early 30s. I used to be able to tell you where he was and what songs he was recording on any given year. My family used to make fun of me and yell out a year and I would recite back some of the things pertinent about that year, all of which would surround Sinatra. I’ve studied his approach and technique and of course his phrasing. I was aware of him since I was six years old; and I asked my father who was the best fighter in the world, and he said Muhammad Ali after he beat Foreman.

I then asked who the best singer was, and he said Frank Sinatra and so from that moment on I tried to figure out why and it didn’t take me very long.

I’ve concluded that Sinatra‘s exceptionalism is rooted in him as a man. That is what affected his 30 | WWW.ATLASMEDIAFL.COM

singing more than anything else. Who he was. His unparalleled glow. His equipment and range are not exceptional. But when you hear any other singer singing the same song, something indispensable is missing. And that’s the man himself. Another big influence for me is a French singer, Charles Aznavour.

I grew up with my family obsessed with him and I went to about 12 of his concerts since being a little boy.

I know you bought the book, The Chairman; and I sent you the first half of that biography, The Voice.

Have you read them, and has it inspired you to do anything new; and did you learn anything new about performing?

Yes, and thank you so much for the book! A great gift in the middle of that horrible year we all experienced.

I sometimes return to different sections and re-read.

The study of Frank never ends. New material always seems to come out for me to study; and, as I age, my observations change as well. For example in 2020, I turned 50. I think about in 1965 when Sinatra was 50, he was experiencing yet another peak in his

career. Many of the number one hits we all know, he recorded in that period. A Man and His Music, both the album and the TV show in November of that year and the four years following. I am always thinking about Frank and his life, so when I get new material like the huge book you sent me, it’s a wealth of potentially new information. Ultimately, when I sing it’s me, Philippe, singing, with my own history and life experiences, but understanding him and his work is a direct influence on mine. The reading inspires me to remember that what I do isn’t work and I should never be going through the motions like a ‘professional’; and I should instead live out each song as authentically as I can and perform like no one is watching. Like that boy in the garage while the whole house slept.

How did you meet your partner Bobbi Rae and what does she bring to the table?

Bobbi is the proof that if you live your life straight and just pursue clean ambitions like being happy and putting out good energy always that the rewards will come in spades. I now wake up every day and go to sleep with a girl that is dedicated to my happiness that has the most beautiful, happy, giving and bright energy that shines on me all day, every day for what is now eight years. Every day I get with her as a gift from the universe that I’m not worthy of, but I try to earn it and make her happy. I am just a lucky SOB. Forget about what she brings to the table. It’s more than just the table, it’s the bubble of joy I live in. She brings that to our performances too. Such a glow and energy when she dances. I call it like rubbernecking.

We all just sit there watching her because you can’t look away. My dad used to complain of my life of debaucherously womanizing and explain that when I would find the right woman everything else would go easier and fall in place. He was right. We met here in Florida at the corner of destiny and luck.

What inspired you to form your organization?

To put it simply, dying animals and the reality that I could do something about it. What I can collect here, a small percentage of what is out there, will not do harm once removed. My love of the ocean got me into scuba diving. Spending any time underwater is my saving grace. The animal encounters, being a part of their world, understanding the symbiosis there and with land and humans, made me want to protect it.

And being part of a renegade group of volunteers after 9/11 at Ground Zero instilled the reality that I could make a difference.

What else have you been involved with before you started your organization?

Early on, I just wrote donation checks and attended some galas in NYC. Then I moved to West Palm Beach and met the West Palm 100. Like-minded people getting their hands dirty to help local non-profits. As a volunteer working at Ground Zero, I realized what doesn’t get done and how a group of committed

people can get it done and make a huge difference. WP100 was that local group, and I met many non-profits that benefitted from this help.

Who are your volunteers?

Our volunteers run the gamut of 4yr-olds, whose parents want to instill a sense of giving back, to students who need community hours, to adults who want to make a difference. My paid crew are clients of agencies that I met via the WP100. They worked toward giving people their independence. The Lord’s Place and Vitanova work with some of the most vulnerable in our society. These individuals do the

hard work of needed programs, sobriety, confidence-building and then they are ‘job ready’ with limited work opportunities. So we put them to work, some for the first time and some for the first time in a long time.

Tell us what is going on out there with plastic waste.

Simply, plastic was a revolutionary material in its origination. Its lightweight, almost indestructible make-up allows for cars and rockets to be made lighter, many items to be made cheaper, etc. But then the manufacturing and oil community started pumping out single-use plastics. Plastic

bags, straws, utensils, cups, plates, containers. Glass jars and bottles are now mostly plastic.

This allowed them to use every drop of fossil fuel to make even more money. Give this to a society growing more disposable and lazier every day, this singleuse product means billions of pounds of it end up with nowhere to go but our natural environment. This product is choking our natural resources, our living creatures, the balance in an eco-system that works to keep us healthy. Clean air, clean water, clean living is tainted. In some places and instances, the damage cannot be reversed.

But it is not too late for us to clean up our act. Cheap replaced healthy. Not a good formula for a race decimating the one home they exist in and on. That home, Earth, can clean up its act.

Humans need to seriously accept this and take action to amend.

And it doesn’t end with plastics, Styrofoam is nasty and even more prolific and just as harmful to us and animals.

What are simple things that we can do to help stop the contribution to this ongoing environmental tragedy?

the powdered version. It saves you over $120 and eliminates 64 plastic bottles and caps from entering the environment.

What are some of the weirdest things you have found on your cleanups?

Change habits, which can be difficult for many, but this action is so necessary.

A. Fill a reusable water bottle, or two, before you leave the house.

B. Remember your reusable cloth bags at the store.

C. Carry reusable utensils. When I had my daughter, it was an added burden to avoid plastics, but we did it whenever possible.

D. In Florida, for hurricane prep, we fill a 5-gal Igloo of tap water.

Saves us a boatload of money and eliminates all those plastic bottles. It can be stored in a closet out of the way if you have limited space.

E. Buy your milk, orange juice, laundry detergent in cardboard.

F. Your kids drink Gatorade, buy

Toothbrushes, toilet seats, IV line and needles, a boat toilet, an 80s TV. Some of these items are light, some not so light. The power of the ocean and its currents is revealed when you can find a toilet! (cont’d on next page...)

What is the most common thing you find?

Bottle caps, and it keeps me up at night wondering where are their bottles that I couldn’t remove from the ocean.

Are you finding lots of gloves and masks yet?

Yes, and it’s disheartening but just adds to the reality that solid waste management isn’t as simple as putting it in the bin.

lot. This trash and the PPE are everywhere! Even with the best intentions, the system is broken because it is overwhelmed by these items.

Medical waste seems so egregious. How can that be addressed?

Yes, it is and I have addressed the existence with local officials but many seem to be immune to its reality. We continue to collect it and have partnered with Palm

Beach Atlantic University to do a drift study to nail the origin.

Hopefully with the science behind it, we can bring it to the powers that be and formulate a plan to eradicate it.

Are any government entities helping you?

We are working with a university in the Dominican Republic, and I have been in touch with the Cayman Islands as well. They have the same issue, same items,

and same hope to end the flow.

I see that you are in front of Mar-a-Lago often cleaning up.

Has that organization or the office of Donald Trump offered help financially, and did you ask them?

We cover over 9.5 miles of beach on Palm Beach, mostly all private property. We clean in front of Mar-a-Lago, as the same trash washes in there as it does everywhere else. The only help we get is that security didn’t stop us from cleaning when Trump was in town. I have never asked. With the former president’s track record on the environment, and his son’s treatment of local marine life, I didn’t expect any help. But we continue to clean there because there is trash.

Do you see any other patterns of where the waste is coming from?

Due to the ocean currents and the strong northern moving Gulfstream, Florida gets little solid waste from the Bahamas actually. That trash, and there is a lot of it without a hurricane adding to the amount, heads north. What lands here is coming from islands and countries from the southeast of us, i.e. Haiti, Cuba, Central America, and even West Africa. And we get waste from inland towns like Royal Palm Beach, due to the manmade canals. Think of all the trash you see on Southern Blvd as you drive. That trash and more makes its way into the c51 canal and ends up in the Lake Worth Lagoon. The trash then washes ashore on intracoastal beaches like Summa and George Petty, and then some trash moves out the inlets to the ocean.

Do you plan on expanding and how?

I’ve been wanting to expand for some time, to other beaches in our area and around Florida,

even the country. COVID put a halt to that, but my hope is that we can make it happen soon.

What I’d really like to happen is that others take my ‘blueprint’ and make it happen in their communities. I took the idea from a group in NYC, the Ace Program. Henry Buhl started this decades ago to clean up lower Manhattan and give the local homeless a chance at independence and returning to society.

What else would you like to add that needs to be said regarding these matters.

There is a large push for legislation to stem the flow of single-use plastics. Many have been introduced locally and now even federally. As much as it’s hard for people to change personal habits, I know people are hesitant to get involved in politics, but voices need to be heard and votes and support for such legislation. Its more about educating the masses than trying to inhibit personal choice.

But unfortunately, personal choice needs to be inhibited, i.e. banning plastic bags, straws, and Styrofoam, for people to wake

up to the issue. Bills are being introduced that put the onus back on the manufacturers and oil industry to manage the end product versus the taxpayer who is paying that huge bill. Not only monetarily but environmentally.

Think of Coca Cola making trillions on their $3 bottle of coke, but taxpayers footing the bill on its correct disposal, and it’s one of the biggest polluters on our planet! Sound fair to you?

of the planet is water and most everyone is familiar with hydro-electric energy. We picture it as a giant rush of powerful water coming out of the sides of a cement wall below a lake walled off to create an infinite flow of intense released energy. Then on the other hand, there is the future Waterotor technology just quietly spinning beneath the water in natural bliss, but producing much energy nonetheless to be stored and used as needed in the immediate or distant future. It is called Waterotor’s hydro-kinetic energy.

This is the unique vision/design of Fred Ferguson, the great grandson of Samuel Clinton Morse.

Ferguson was a West Palm Beach resident/ businessman for several years prior to moving back to Ottawa, where he is originally from. With new developments, he hopes to bring part of his operations back here. That could be a big boon to the area. The design is unique, separating it apart

from other technologies. All other hydro-kinetic technologies require at least a water flow of 8-12 mph to produce significant production of storable energy. The Waterotor only requires 2 mph, with 4 to 6 mph being the ‘sweet spot’ producing energy at less than 10 cents per kw/hr. May not sound like much of a difference, but it is a giant difference in the hydro field, allowing use of many more bodies of water and making less of an impact on the environment. It is in fact ‘a no-kill system’ when it comes to fish and other marine life. The unique properties of the Waterotor are related to the blade design, side discs, front stator, and the low capital costs of construction in the variety of sizes and configurations. Waterotor has patents granted and pending around the world.

Currently the company is working on getting testing done with a very large underwater system just offshore here in the Gulf Stream, since it is the closest to the mainland on the eastern seaboard.

I have also worked with them to help introduce the technology to the non-profit world. Since it is a lightweight and portable technology, NGO’s can take advantage of its technology in the field during various humanitarian and disaster relief situations around the world where the power grid is out or in

remote areas where there is no power grid.

On the legislative front, Ferguson points out the Trump Administration adopted the Marine Energy Research and Development Act in 2019 and established a US policy “to assist technology development on a variety of scales, including full-scale prototypes, to improve the components, processes, and systems used for power generation from marine energy resources.” The Biden Administration just passed an appropriations bill that gives the DOE $2.86 billion to fund clean, affordable, secure energy.

Fred was in West Palm Beach recently to meet with shareholders and I sat down with him to give us more insight about the background, company, and technology.

Your background is in aerospace and wind technology. What made you turn to water as your focus?

Although I spent a major part of my life in developing aerospace technologies including the design of new aircraft, it wasn’t until the late 90s that I recognized that some of the rotating aerospace transport systems that I had designed could be applied to extracting energy from under the water, especially energy extraction in very low water speeds. Having lived in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach, I well recognized that in all our great oceans there are major water streams flowing at low speeds around 4 mph. An example of one huge stream is the Gulf Stream that passes alongside Southeast Florida and while deep sea fishing with my Florida business partner many times, it was very clear that under the surface this unidirectional flow was moving quite quickly. The amount of energy moving within rivers, canals, streams, and especially big ocean streams such as the Gulf Stream could in fact provide all the energy needs

of our planet. The problem is, can you efficiently extract that energy? Even at very low speed there is a tremendous amount of power. Water is 830 times more powerful than wind moving at comparable speed, and in fact, a 6-mph water flow is equivalent to a 400 mile per hour wind. Huge amounts of energy! That ‘flat moving water flow energy’ is what we now know as hydrokinetic energy. It took us nine years and over $20 million to have now proven a very viable solution to extract that very slow-moving energy and converting it to electricity.

Waterotors are fully scalable to size, big or small, extremely robust, and low cost.

You have been with some top secret aerospace projects. Can you tell us a little about that without having to kill us? And how did that experience impact what you are doing now with Waterotor?

From the early 90s on I became an expert in unusual flow dynamics and lightweight structures. I led a large, very unusual project within the Lockheed Advanced

Development Corporation commonly known as the Lockheed Skunkworks. That project was my design of an immense cargo airship system led by FEDEX, but ended up falling into a military program.

That diversion instigated our course into discovering what became the current breakthrough aspects that apply to Waterotor. During that experience I recognized that rotating large bodies such as spheres or cylinders could create unusual drag and lift characteristics. Things like advancing Magnus Effect flow dynamics also applies to the flight of golf balls or even curveballs in baseball and other rotating objects.

My guess is you had an epiphany with the Waterotor idea and its initial design. If I am right, can you tell us about that moment and process of visualizing/putting on paper the design?

Typically creating a product or an invention is initially focusing on solutions to a problem. Not always does it occur in a moment and in the case of the Waterotor

design, I had previously spent nearly five years developing a rotating form of floating airship that would extract energy from about 1000 feet above the ground. As we did simulation testing in water flow to represent massive scale, my engineers and I recognized that the breakthrough was better applied to a submerged device in very slow-moving water currents.

That was the beginning in 2011 and from there 20 million dollars later it has led to the proven evolution of making the basic concept apply to a variety of sizes and markets.

Almost any energy technology inserted into nature has an impact. Windmills kill a certain amount of birds and bats, pipelines interrupt migration routes, etc. What kind of impact on nature does the Waterotor have whether it be in streams, rivers, of the Gulf Stream?

The really great thing about a Waterotor, apart from its high percentage of energy extraction, is the fact that it operates like a rolling drum, rolling with the direction of the water flow and at the water flow speed. We

have videotaped fish and other marine life swimming with our operating Waterotors. And, in fact, with the first Waterotor that we put into the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which was only flowing at 1.8 mph, there were kids swimming alongside the slowly rotating device even while we were generating electricity to the shore. This is an extremely safe technology for people and the environment.

H

e’s a wanderer (or is it wonderer?).

He’s a hunter. He knows where treasures are, and may be. He has prizes - he’s a winner. He’s the lovable friend of many. He’s the Shark Tooth Hunter (amongst other things), Michael Leach. And he professes/ teaches that there are treasures…. out there.

Our shores seem relatively devoid of seashells compared to many other beaches in the Southeast, like Tybee Island and the ‘Red Neck Riviera’. You would also think you could only find antique bottles along the Northeast coast at the edge of marsh and sea. And it probably did not cross your mind that you might find a Mako, Great White, or even a Megalodon tooth (the bucket list of shark tooth hunters) on these sandy shores. But guess what? They are all here (even though ‘Professor’ Leach does not have that Megalodon in his back pocket…. yet).

Leach is quite coy about his haunts and reluctant to give them up, but I am going to try and get some starter places out of him for the layman treasure hunter, including myself. I can tell you this however, if they are dredging the intracoastal, inlet, or ocean near your area and depositing the sands from below into an area you can access, that is an exceptionally good source. Leach can’t be mad at me for revealing that, because I know this from my own experiences/work with several dredging

companies; and I choose to kiss and tell on that one. In these instances, there is usually plenty to go around.

Leach usually starts out very early (especially if he has to work that day) to have a chance to grab the best spoils of the day, because there are others. Oh yes, there are others out there with the same intentions. On his Facebook page ‘Washed Up’ he displays these spoils to the delight of followers and fellow beachcombers who also chime in with their own finds from near and afar. The fresh air, the sound of the waves, sand between the toes, and the expectations of the day. What could make a person happier?

So, I know you hold your ‘hunts’ close to the chest, but can you give a beginner a place to start or hunting advice in general?

Yes, at the beach shorelines that have big shell beds along them, which tend to occur on calm conditions following rough seas, and of course at low tides. Some beaches have better stuff than others, so it takes some time and research.

I do, yes. I work hard to play hard and provide the time to invest during upcoming events such as a dredge and, I’ve been flirting around with starting a YouTube page to showcase videos that show a special find or better known as an “in-situ” video.

Do you ever sport a thong or speedo with your metal detector on the beach during your ‘hunts’?

Do you have a favorite ‘hunting’ partner?

Yes, speedos are usually more appreciated especially when I go diving in the ocean, so I got right in with the French Canadian tourists! And, yes, I love metal detecting especially underwater as my gal gave me a handheld underwater metal detector that I’m waiting to find a big fat diamond ring with.

What is your best find? Or some of your best finds?

I’d have to say the rarer finds of course, which would be a large perfect Great White tooth, a rare shell like paper nautilus, and an old black pirate rum bottle

Do you use a mapping app to show your movements or to keep track of where you have been?

Great question. And no, I usually have mental records of everywhere I’ve been and I revisit areas often. Because, after big storms, more cool stuff can be revealed or washed up afterwards. But my girlfriend always tells me I should document the exact place, time, and conditions.

What is the weirdest thing you have found?

Well, no dead bodies thankfully, but I’ve found Loggerhead sea turtle skulls, and the saddest discovery was a juvenile sperm whale washed up by a frequented jetty of mine. Also finding different types of sea beans and drift seeds can be very interesting and strange looking, and I love new tropical seeds I find.

What is the oldest thing you have found (man-made)?

Ok, so the oldest thing I personally have found besides fossils dating millions of years ago…. man-made …. would definitely be square-headed brass spikes used in 18th/19th century ship building! And, I have

found an almost intact (lip is just partially broken) black pirate bottle dated back to early 1800s.

I’ve sent photos to an expert in England who properly identified them. But my friend Justin has found a broken-off neck/lip of a super old mallet bottle dating to early/mid 1700s! Very, very cool find. I was extremely jealous.

I do support Friends of Palm Beach (www.friendsofpalmbeach. com), who are committed to employing people who clean up our beautiful beaches every day! Kudos to them for picking up nasty medical waste and microplastics!

h, the smell of hops brewing in the back of the warehouse. There’s a new release coming out soon. I love big tanks and I cannot lie.

The excitement beer creates these days is interesting if you grew up like a younger me on the old swill of Budweiser, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller High Life (and Lowenbrau, if you were going to get extra fancy!).

Yeah, we were excited about all those options too at the time, but not to sip, enjoy, discuss, or to compare ‘structure’, ‘hints’, or ‘aromas’. We surely would have been beat up for doing so, even by our own friends.

But today it’s a different world. One of savory bliss in the astounding amount of options that craft beer provides. And, not only that, but a completely new culture as far as ‘bars’ go. The vibe (wow, I do kind of hate that word, but

don’t know what else to call it) has always been a good one for me and many others inside breweries. And at this point, I have been to many in quite a few cities across this hopped land. They are typically family friendly and always dog friendly. Very rarely do you notice anyone that appears drunk, even though the alcohol content in craft beers can be quite high. There are usually games at hand and unique ‘merch’ to purchase. Some places just have a few snacks available such as flavored popcorn, chips, or hot pretzels. Most will have a food truck outside on different days. Some have their own full-blown food menus, and others have food menus from nearby places that will walk your order over to you. They are always unique spaces where it is easy to meet new friends, or work on your laptop, or just read and enjoy a unique beer.

Unlike the corporate ‘swills’ that people are still somehow able to drink, craft beer provides so much diversity in taste. Even within the same category of beer, there are almost endless spectrums. This is mostly provided by the diversity in

hops and the mixing of these hops in the brewing process. Forget about all the things you can add to that – everything from bananas to limes to maple syrup to habanero peppers, and so on, and so on. let’s cover a few of the approximately 80 hops and what they provide (descriptions gathered from www.morebeer.com):

Apollo - gives off both earthy and citrusy aroma.

Calypso - has all kinds of flavor descriptions including the most common of apple, pear, and citrus.

Cashmere - has a unique aroma of herbal, spicy and melon flavors.

Citra - orange, grapefruit, lemon, and other wonderfully tropical fruit flavors create an aroma that is totally unique to this popular hop.

El Dorado - robustly fruity, almost candy-like aroma evokes everything from cherry to peach and mango.

Idaho 7 - best described as piney, tropical, fruity, citrusy, earthy.

Riwaka (one of my faves) - offers a striking grapefruit and citrus character.

Santiam - typically used as an aroma hop with a strong fragrance of spicy black pepper, herbs, and floral.

Strata - many layers of different fruit flavor, dried and fresh, anchored with a dried chili-cannabis-funk.

Tahoma - utilized for its aromatic properties of cedar, pine, pepper, and citrus.

Taurus - a uniquely zesty aroma of earthy spice with a touch of banana, pepper, and a hint of curry.

Topaz - unique aroma of grassy, resinous spice and a tropical note.

There is even an ATLAS Hop - this Slovenian hop brightens up ales and balances a piney, floral aroma.

The structure and taste of some beers on tap change as time goes on, too. Even if you are not super excited about a beer you try off a fresh tap in your favorite beer category, you can go back and give it a try a little later (1 to 3 weeks) and you may now find your pallet really likes it. The IPA’s seem to go thru these changes the most, going from very good to even better and from earthy to sweet and vice-versa.

Another fun thing about craft beer is the artwork that each brewery displays upon their various canned goods. Some of it graffiti/tattoo inspired, others character/creature inspired, and then others inspired by moments of bliss/harmony and spiritual gods. I love the art that goes into designing cans with so many creative minds chipping in. I have a beer can collection for the first time since I was 12 (that’s right, 12).

I can’t bear to throw some of them away. So I wash them out good and stow them away for my future man-cave beer can wall. Others carefully peel the labels off and stick them on the backs of doors and upon walls as a mural of them.

Anybrew, they are fun and pleasant to look at and read.

The names are just as fun, sometimes inspired by the hops used, the characteristic of the beer, a brewers favorite topic, and I assume (reading some of them) an inside story or joke amongst the brewers and owners.

Skunkworts Brewing Concern

Fandom and loyalty are huge amongst brewery goers, if you could not already tell by this article. This allows a unique marketing tool within the Food and Beverage world – ‘collaboration’ on a particular beer between two different breweries. Evan Miller of Civil Society explains “it just makes a win, win situation by learning from each other, coming up with unique beers, and tapping into each other’s ‘loyalties’ (consumers).

I wanted to talk about COVID in this magazine as little as possible because it’s time to recover and look forward, but it certainly has been a factor (to say the least) to many individuals and businesses. The brewery business seemed to have fared quite well though and even thrived. Why? Well, people were stuck at home.

And guess what? You could do a drive-by to your local brewery and pick up 4 packs of your favorite beer to go, and they were selling in droves. I am happy for them. Hey, how about that, a good COVID story - drink it up.

Bags of grains and lots of metal in the back. Pallets of kegs and hundreds of cans from the new releases ready to go out. The train roars by, which I can see out of the bay door windows. Every other car is covered in graffiti. It adds to the ‘vibe’ of Civil Society Brewing.

That is where I am at now, wrapping up this story. Civil Society was founded by brothers Chris and Karl Volstad and their high school buddy Evan Miller, who were homebrewing for some time and decided they could make a business out of it, which they certainly have. It’s a wide-open warehouse space with fantastic wooden tables, comfortable couches and the best bar stools mankind/womankind has ever experienced. I created about 80% of this magazine here, sipping, enjoying the atmosphere, savoring the ‘structure’, ‘hints’, and ‘aromas’ that the hops and the other sometimes unusual ingredients provide. Oh, and not getting beat up for doing so. Cheers.

B

eauty can truly be seen in this local art scene, and the good news is you don’t have to look far. It starts with the people who are making the art, for without artists there simply is no art. We are blessed with a diverse group of talented individuals in this area who are dedicated to their craft and in many cases the growth of our scene as well.

As a longtime resident of Palm Beach County, I am lucky to have witnessed the birth of much of the forward progress that brought us the vibrancy we enjoy today. Upon leaving art school I was thrilled to find some artists and organizers trailblazing by creating opportunities for artists to grow and show work. There are far too many to name, so I will only convey what I witnessed and experienced.

My first look at public art and large-scale exterior murals was from stumbling upon works by Eduardo Mendietta (EMO), Amanda Vales, and Sami Makela.

For a newbie like me, who was only painting small on canvas at the time, this was a real eye opener. These types of artists, who either found opportunities or created them themselves are near and dear to me, as I would be on a completely different path if not for their actions and talent. And that is what building a scene is truly about; having courage, vision and

follow through. The artists I have mentioned, and quite a few others, have all continued with their craft to become success stories and well renowned in their own rights. They also continue to create works right here in Palm Beach County even though they are even sought after regionally, nationally, and internationally. Again, this shows the spirit of a collective effort to make our home a place full of great art.

Continuing with a focus on vision, I also found artists who were putting on large collaborative, group pop-up art shows and live painting exhibitions. This absolutely blew my mind. I found a complete culture of makers, promoters, and like-minded individuals.

The first opportunity that really got me inspired was shows by the name of Art Nouveau, created by Teresa Korber. This was a marketplace extravaganza with a fun ‘live art’ aspect. I had never considered art being created in front of an audience before and this really kicked me into gear. Our audience became our fans or customers and it was a true moment of a scene blooming. There was also a theme for each show and I grabbed on with both hands and created a new body of work that was inspired by the themes.

It was a great motivator for me and many other emerging artists at the time.

Another aspect of scene growth that I was unaware was happening was artists curating high quality, accessible gallery shows. ATB Fine Art Group was busy making strides in the realm of bringing quality shows to the public.

I first met Trina and Anthony (ATB) at a local art store and was immediately stricken with the thought that I must find a way to work with them and further their efforts.

Gifted artists who often put aside their own art and are giving of their time and efforts for the greater good are hard to come by. To this day they are breaking new ground and I am happy to report I have been collaborating with them for a long time. But that is another story. Similarly, other visionaries were making things happen by creating popular art walks and art districts and destinations, seemingly out of thin air. Some great examples are Rolando Barrero and the Boynton Beach Art District, Rodney Mayo and his vision and support of the arts in downtown West Palm Beach and beyond, and AJ Brockman and the Lake Park Art District. Again, there are many examples throughout the county, but these are the gentlemen I first met and started to collaborate with.

So, with that relatively quick review of my experience and perception of how our current scene started to take shape, let’s move on to where we are today. Due to these early pioneers many ‘bridges’ were built. Some of the strongest being between artists and municipalities. This is one of the ways we have been blessed with so much great public art, which I believe to be some of the most important due to its unilateral accessibility. Entities like the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority helped start the ball rolling at the beginning. A

specific link between the artist EMO and DDA Director Raphael Clemente, for example, forged the first stretch of a bridge we stand on now. Many cities and neighborhoods are flourishing because of art. Great examples are Northwood Village, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach, Delray and Lake Park.

There is no doubt that embracing art is key for progressive movement. Pay a visit and you will see what it does for ‘personality’, economic development, and the public perception of an area.

And finally, lets tip a hat to the artists.

Yes, this is a bit self-serving, since I am one, but we must pat ourselves on the back a bit. Let’s especially look at the ‘doers’. In a world of ‘talkers’ it’s sometimes hard to see things through.

We are blessed here to have a dynamic group of movers and shakers who produce quality work and keep an eye on the greater good. Let me tell you firsthand it is easy for us artists to get lost in our own world and drown in ego.

But as our county shows, it truly takes a village of empathetic, professional creative-minded people to grow a powerful art scene. We are poised to make great strides. The art and culture sector are fertile, but there is still a lot of work to do, especially considering the pandemic and its repercussions.

I think if artists continue to bond together for a common goal and use their power of critical thinking for problem solving, we will continue onward and upward.

I have nothing but positive thoughts for our forward progress, and with continued collaboration and support from renowned institutions like The Cultural Council, City C.R.A.s, The Kravis Center, The Norton Museum, and numerous not-for-profits, we will move forward and evolve into one of the best art scenes anywhere.

T

he very affable artist formerly and currently known as Craig McInnis is a canvas of creativity.

The Connecticut transplant has a list of creatives in his body, hands, and soul – mural artist, fine art, guitar player/singer, interactive mediums, set designer, art teacher, tattoo apprentice, and figurine collector (just kidding, I threw that one in, but maybe that is something he is hiding).

His work is quite spread about and will enhance your dining and drinking experience if you visit Kapow WPB (one of my personal favorites), Subculture Coffee Shop Jupiter, or Skunkworts Brewery in Northwood. Oh, and drop

by The Brewhouse Gallery / Kelsey City Brewing Company and see if you can figure out how his interactive creation was done there. These are all places adorned with McInnis’ creativity.

Always having art in his bones and the DNA of a talented artist mother (very supporting of her son’s endeavors) and Big Band entrenched uncles and grandfather, McInnis was destined to show you what rolls and tumbles around in his mind. And he has done an excellent job of it.

My favorite aspect of his work is his robotic/steam punk infused characters.

So much so that I asked him to come up with a logo for my foundation’s Christmas toy drive in that genre. I had a perfect logo within just a couple of

hours; and it inspired me, because I tend to associate images with efforts/ projects and vice versa.

Well, enough of praise. No, wait a minute, I have more. Before COVID ruined everyone’s day, McInnis taught art classes in Northwood at Lot 23 on Northwood Rd under the local CRA Initiative. These classes included several residents in the area that don’t usually have access to that luxury. All for free. Most classes are drawing and acrylic painting. He has also taught at the Armory Arts Center. Furthering efforts to reach those less fortunate through art is the Co-founding of Art Synergy and CONTINUUM - a dedicated team of art professionals with the goal of promoting local art at national and international levels and to facilitate access to education, art and culture to those who may not have previously had the chance.

Now for the scary side of McInnis.

For the last 15 years (prior to this past Fall of course), he has been the Creative Director of Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds. In charge of horror make-up, graphics, talent booking, casting and management, branding, set design, scenic painting.

He also enjoys hopping into one of the characters featured within. He thinks it’s a scream.

What would you want to be if you were not an artist?

Great question. Because I have always been on this path of art and music. I never really had any other aspirations. Perhaps something with nature / science, as I am big on spending time in the wilderness. It is such a great ‘reset’. I imagine working in it somehow would be great for the soul.

Looking at much of your art, I label it in my head as mostly ‘Steam Punk’. Would you have a better or more updated name for it, or am I off altogether?

Steam punk is a style that came into trend a few years back and still enjoys some popularity in our culture. But I will say it only appears in my work as a bit of ‘seasoning’ if you will. I enjoy aspects of it and therefore it makes an appearance here and there, but no more than other styles like graffiti and pop art do. I think I fall into ‘pop surreal’, ‘lowbrow’, ‘cartoon’, ‘abstract’ categories and probably about 6 more that I am unaware that exist, haha.

Your mother is an artist, correct? How much influence did/has she had on you? Any other family members have influence as well?

Yes, she is a very talented illustrator. She had a HUGE influence on me in two main ways. First, she used to draw a lot when I was young and learning to draw myself. I would draw alongside of her or simply just watch as she did original work or copied a superhero at my request. Second, she was, and still is, a big supporter of all my creative endeavors. As soon as I focused in on being a professional artist, she was there to help me move forward; from helping me through art school to simply giving me words of encouragement when others in my life were busy downplaying being an artist as a career. Her Family Tree (and therefore mine) has many musicians as well, including my Grandfather who was a horn player and big band leader.

Can you speak to what took you in the direction you have gone with your art?

Growing up on cartoons, I was always drawn to the bold style and the fact that deep subject matter could be discussed within the confines of comedy. I feel the need to have my art ‘speak’, so anything that makes that more effective is something I always search for. I really embraced it from day one and continue to try and find my own style and voice by copying and grabbing style points from my favorites. It started with Looney Tunes, Bill Watterson, Berke Brethed, Jim Davis, Dali, Tim Burton, and the list goes on with my influences.

I have also been blessed with great mentors (i.e., Anthony and Trina Burks, Sam Perry, Rolando Barrero) that helped me diversify my portfolio and find new focus when lost.

What is your favorite thing to do? Murals, individual pieces, or interactive projects like the one at the BrewHouse Gallery / Kelsey City Brewing Company, which I have tried to figure out how it was done - to no avail.

For me, it is about the style and content of the piece more than the final output. In other words, I love to create my character-

driven commentary work or my abstract works equally, whether they are canvas or mural or mixed. Collaborative projects like the 2D murals with projection mapping on top are fun to do and even more fun to see people reacting to (I can clue you in on the process over coffee haha). I have a few of those completed with my friend Jasper Mosher at the Digital Helm. Though, I really do like a challenge and for that to occur I have trained myself to come from a place of YES, taking on work outside my comfort zone. At the end of the day, medium-wise though, I love paint!

What is your future track?

I have been working on functional and wearable art that I sell in my online Shop to help diversify my income streams. I am also expanding my reach by training an assistant (the talented Kat Janis) so that I can take on more projects. The addition of Kat has allowed me to focus more on the general forward progress of my business rather than just completing the current project. I intend to continue my teaching efforts and to add more

options for private instruction.

Most importantly, I will continue to look for ways to use my art at a community level to do good of any kind.

Tell us about your music? What kind of music do you typically play?

I am currently in a funky, eclectic rock band called Raised by Wolves. We are hard to describe, as we tend to blend all our favorite styles into one big mix.

We are currently recording, as live shows are on hold. In the past I have been in many projects including the styles of Heavy Metal, hard rock, funk, and hip-hop. I am primarily a singer-songwriter, but I play guitar as well.

Does your music have any impact on your art and vice versa?

Yes. As a writer/ lyricist I tend to think from a bird’s eye view about a project. Whether crafting a song or a painting I tend to look at the goal for an outcome to help get me started.

And yes, they do intertwine a bit, as I will grab content from lyrics

to move to visual art or viceversa. I love to creatively write, and I find words are a great bridge that traverse many media.

Do you have a favorite local charitable organization?

I am proud to serve as VP of the No More Starving Artist Foundation to help Palm Beach County artists be sustainable personally and professionally by providing opportunities and services.

I also collaborate with Ricky Aiken and his team at Inner City Innovators. They are dedicated to eradicating delinquency and gun violence among youth in the inner cities throughout Palm Beach County. Their mission is to inspire and empower inner city youth to embody the change they want to see in their communities!

I

t came a-blowin’, and then started slowin’.

Hurricane Dorian was full speed ahead with an initial mainland target of the SE Florida region and West Palm Beach in its sights - top wind speeds of 185 mph. Then the real problem and a terrible fate arose when it nearly came to a forward-moving halt, while maintaining its wind speed... right over the top of the Bahamas, devastating Grand Bahama Island and Abaco in the many hours it lingered there. The damage was shocking.

Being so close to the Bahamas, SE Florida went straight to support mode.

Many groups, companies and individuals volunteered for relief.

Here in West Palm Beach, Rodney Mayo who founded Sub-Culture Group (with a holding of 16 restaurants and bars and several other new venues on the way), former commissioner Kimberly Mitchel, Thierry Beaud (another local restauranteur – PB Catch, Pistache, The Regional), Manny Bornia with Think Shop, and Anita Mitchel jumped into serious action.

They fired up the Bahamas Relief Cruise, with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line donating the first trip.

Over the next 12 months they helped 1,300 Bahamians in crisis return to the United States to visit families and stay with host families, provided over 15,000 meals on the ground, helped rebuild 34 homes and businesses in Grand Bahamas, and even established medical clinics there. This effort then morphed into a separate charitable cause.

The H3 Hospitality Helping Hands effort in West Palm Beach fed thousands of needy families in Palm Beach County for many months thru drive-thru locations when the COVID lockdown happened. They also did dog food and diaper drives for this same needy crowd in those drive-thru locations. All those efforts resulted in hundreds of thousands of hot meals, tens of thousands of sets of groceries and diapers, and approximately 15,000 pounds of dog food.

When the holidays came, my Charity West Palm organization teamed up with Mayo and H3 Hospitality Helping Hands to get thousands of toys, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, and other holiday items to needy families and their kids throughout Palm Beach County.

Despite all those efforts on the hurricane relief at the time, Mayo asked himself how he could help further solve an intermediate problem and provide a long term solution to the threat of hurricanes for a fragile housing environment in such a hurricane-prone area. Container homes popped into his head, as it was an alreadythought-of housing concept for low income families in our area. Container homes have become popular options for forward-thinking designers and architects and other unique thinking people.

Container homes solve a lot of problems: • Repurpose unused shipping containers • Withstand 200 mph winds • Come together in a much shorter time than traditional construction • Easily insulated against heat and cold • Much more portable

• Potential for off-grid capabilities and smaller footprints • Accommodate configurations for nearly unlimited designs • Can typically be built for 70% of the cost of traditional construction

So, Mayo began the transformation of two containers. And they are beautiful. Really bright and laid out well on the inside, and works of art on the outside…literally. One container was dressed in a full garb of murals done by local artist Adam Sheetz (www.adamsheetzart.com) and the other by a Bahamian artist by the name of Matt Wildgoose (theartofmattwild.com).

Many other volunteers were a part of the build-out over the last 13 months, and the first one has been delivered to Abaco. The delivery was carried out by Tropical Shipping, who Mayo said has been an incredible partner on the project, providing “super cheap” shipping of the first unit that was delivered. “We are just waiting for the foundations and pilings to be installed, and then a local contractor will finish the rest of the final install. Viability studies show that this can be a much longer term effort with an extended reach, not only in the Bahamas but worldwide in weather-vulnerable and impoverished areas.”

The second is ready to be shipped, but Mayo needs a philanthropic financial partner because he has been funding the project out of his own pocket on top of many of the other projects he has initiated and financed.

The two ‘model’ projects cost about $60,000 each to complete, and it will be close to $12,000 to install each as well. Mayo tells me that those numbers must be more

economically efficient for it to be a viable program for the long term. He says this would be achieved by more mass production, with the ideal cost per unit being brought down to $35 - $45,000 each. The install would probably remain the same cost in most circumstances, but at least that would provide jobs for up to 30 Bahamians for a 4 to 6 week period (per unit) as Mayo estimates. Units can be fully built out at their facility in West Palm Beach and shipped, or they can also be partially completed at the facility and loaded with all the supplies to complete the unit in the Bahamas.

I also asked about corporate sponsorship of individual or multiple-unit build-outs. Mayo says that corporate sponsorships for units will get strong recognition, and sponsors can even put their logos on the containers. The program welcomes any donations, sponsorships, and inquiries to help the project develop and expand.

There is one other issue that this massive hurricane has caused – a smashing of the tourism industry and of commerce in general on those two islands. Contributing to the solutions – ‘micro-resorts’ - built of .... you guessed it .... containers. We will keep an eye on that forwardlooking project by Mayo and update you in the next issue of ATLAS. Farm life looks a lot different today. Words such as hydroponic, modern, organic and urban are used to describe it. But the beloved barn animals still are rocking it old school. Cows. Horses. Pigs. Goats.

Goats, the diminutive mammals known as billys, nannys and kids, stand out from their bovine, equine and porcine counterparts because of their gentle, kind and loving nature. While it took the country a century or so to conceive what would become a frenetic fitness craze, a goat-adoring, yoga-savvy society finally figured it out. Goat yoga.

Goat yoga originated in Oregon. Its founder, Lainey Morse, acquired a herd as a way of coping with depression. The story, according to the Original Goat Yoga website, goes like this: “What do you do when you’ve just been diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease, you are going through a divorce, and your job of ten years is winding down? Do you throw caution to the wind and start something the world has never known, or do you play it safe? Playing it safe was not an option for Lainey Morse.”

In 2016, goat yoga went viral. After appearing on CNN, NPR and other news outlets, and with articles in The Wall Street Journal, Time magazine and other publications, Morse “found her voice describing how to persevere in the face of adversity, the power of reconnecting with our rural roots, the fulfillment borne of helping others to realize their dreams, and the joy that comes from a goat picking your yoga mat to lie on,” according to the website.

Goat yoga continues to sweep the nation, and South Florida is no exception. A few miles southwest of West Palm Beach, in Loxahatchee, the happy distraction of practicing poses with four hooves on one’s back feeds dozens of bodies, minds and souls on select Saturdays.

“I love sharing the animals, and I love what they do for me and the way that they are and the way that they get along with everybody,” said Korinne Johnson, the owner of Downward Goat. “We want to be able to show as many people as we can the connection and the peace and the safe space.”

Johnson, whose fascination with farm life traces back to her grandparents’ six acres in Pensacola, said she called Morse after seeing all of the videos on social media spectacularizing the sweet, short-

haired creatures bounding to and fro during a semiserious vinyasa flow.

“Facebook gets me in trouble all the time,” Johnson joked. “Seriously, I reached out to her and said, ‘Tell me about this,’ and we decided to give it a shot.”

She invited a few friends to her home and conducted a class with Daisy and Opal. “We had a fantastic time, we laughed, and they all wanted to come back,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t a grand plan to have a business or anything like that. What we found was that people really identified with the animals, the peace of the animals.”

In addition to their gentle, kind and loving nature, goats are friendly and lively – and maybe a bit mischievous. “They pee, they poop, they chew on things, they lie down and go to sleep on you – they’re goats,” Johnson said. “They get to do what they do best.”

Unlike some pets, goats also are refreshingly nonjudgmental. “They don’t care how old you are or how young you are, they don’t care if you’re male or female, they don’t care if you’re fat or thin or black or white,” Johnson said. “They only care that you’re kind, and then they will share their love. And I think we all need a lot more of that right now.”

You Farm, a five-acre agritourism site near the corner of Southern Boulevard and Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, stages Downward Goat’s classes in a hay-filled pen that houses Chia, Chive, Diamond, Poppy, Rosemary, Sage and Willow.

“This is for anyone and everyone,” Johnson said.

“Really, the only expectation is to come in, be kind, and have fun.”

session with the simple goal of allowing whatever happens to happen. “The more that I’ve taught, the more I realize every class is so different,” Depasquale said. “In the hour that I have, it’s definitely not about the postures but bringing people together with the animals.”

The seven goats typically fan out first to prone participants, licking feet, sniffing faces and straddling stomachs. As soon as everyone takes the tabletop stance, backs are fair game. “They’re very curious,” Depasquale said. “They teach us now to be a child at heart and to be inquisitive. And how can you not laugh at a goat snort?”

The sounds of a crystal harp, a didgeridoo, a harmonica, a native flute and a tambourine complement the baas and the bleats the goats utter to communicate. Musician Richard Wyzanski, also You Farm’s master gardener, weaves between mats while playing the various instruments, adding a Zenlike vibe to the rusticity.

“I never experienced anything like this,” Wyzanski said. “It has been just wonderful to bring this to the farm.”

Several of Downward Goat’s students are regulars, returning week after week for another round of giggles and goofs.

“Instinctively, they love to climb and jump, and that’s why they hop on your back,” said Shelby Horbonis, who owns You Farm with husband Stefan Horbonis. “You can forget about everything else for a while, laugh a little and do goat yoga.”

“Goat yoga – it’s a thing,” Stefan Horbonis added.

“And we are Palm Beach County’s official location.

It’s been awesome and is an amazing experience.”

Mid-Century MODERN MOMENTS

There is no shortage of mid-century moderndesigned commercial buildings in the Pompano/Ft Lauderdale area, and certainly not in Miami. Some of the condo buildings in Palm Beach and South Palm Beach reflect the movement, but along (and just off of) U.S. Hwy 1 in this area such structures are conspicuously lacking. As a matter of fact, it is mostly churches and other religious institutions that are cloaked in my favorite movement in design. Perhaps the most representative being the sprawling Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center on U.S. 1 in North Palm Beach just south of PGA Blvd, hugging the intracoastal waterway with its greatness and relative solitude.

According to the Passionist Historical Archives, the Archdiocese of Miami encouraged a group of Passionists to establish a retreat ministry in the Southeastern United States during the mid to late 1950s. They settled into the Lake Park area in 1959, and a few years later established the retreat on swampland along U.S. 1 - a 26-acre piece of land overlooking Lake Worth. The parcel was sold to them by none other than the insurance and real estate mogul John D MacArthur. Brother Cajetan J.B. Baumann and Paul F. Damaz were tasked to 92 | WWW.ATLASMEDIAFL.COM

design and build what became a critically acclaimed cruciform design. It was an important landmark to this area.

Brother Baumann spent 2 years in WWI with the engineering corps of the German Imperial Army.

Later, after emigrating to the United States, he became the first member of a religious order ever to be named to the American Institute of Architects.

Throughout his career he designed many religious structures around the world. His designs were considered “incredibly progressive” and provided modern interpretations of Gothic architecture.

Damaz was born in Portugal and served as a captain in the French Army from 1941-1945. He would eventually move to New York, working for a handful of top architectural and design firms. He was an integral designer on the United Nations Headquarters from 1948 to 1953. He would go on

to produce several books on the subject of ‘art in architecture’ and would also lecture at many universities and on television throughout his career.

I am currently unable to find anymore information about how the two architects initially connected and how they worked together on the Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center project, but perhaps, as I dive deeper, I can bring those details to you in a future segment. In the meantime, I would encourage you to drop by and ask if you could walk the peaceful grounds and enjoy the architecture. And, if you are not shy, ask if you can peak into the beautiful chapel behind all of that stained glass at the front of the compound. Go later in the afternoon for this (4-5 o’clock…ish), leave the lights off, and see the many spectacular colors and shadows drape the inside walls and pews. Oh, and say a little prayer for me since they (for unknown reasons) threatened to involve their lawyers if I published anything about the facility in this magazine. However, in the ‘spirit’ of things, I shall still forgive them, if they do so. It’s a great architectural landmark, and I was determined to write about it regardless of the pushback (insert smile emoji here).

Creature Comforts

They had me at shello.

I chose the Aldabra Giant Tortoise to be the star of the first segment of Creature Comforts because a friend of mine raises tortoises and seems to love them to pieces. I have to admit, I only expected to come out to the zoo and take a few pictures of a lazy uninterested, cold blooded reptile. Boy was I wrong. They were engaging, active, and full of warm personality.

Emily Maple (their keeper) fed them raw sweet potatoes, which they consumed heartedly while a few others chowed on sea grape leaves. Maple says they live a great life there and it seems so. They even have their own pool to cool off in. I’m thinking about growing a shell and moving in.

Despite the fact I had no food in hand, they sought me out for a petting over and over; like a little pup hoping for more, but just a bit slower. As soon as you reach to stroke their neck, that head comes out and the next stretches as long as it can and they look you in the face and blink their eyes at you. I have to admit they felt really freaky, but you can’t resist them. I would say the neck felt like loose, soft leathery elephant skin (or how I imagined it being, 94 | WWW.ATLASMEDIAFL.COM

since I have never pet an elephant). Their feet were interesting too and were much harder, like a knobbied rhinoceros skin (again, having to imagine, since….). I also learned that they like the back side of their shell rubbed and it puts them in kind of a meditative state. I would have not even thought they could feel it, but apparently it tickles their fancy.

Ok, so now for some scientific facts about the Aldabra Giant Tortoises and some personal introductions. They come from the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles and is one of the largest tortoises in the world with males getting up to 500 plus pounds and females reaching up to about 350 pounds.

Their population status is ‘at risk’, but not on the endangered list. There are approximately 100,000 shelled residents on the atoll. They are herbivores, but they will scavenge on small dead animals if they come across them in hunger and are relatively fresh.

At the zoo, they feed on fruits, sweet potatoes, sea grape leaves, lettuce, and other such goodies. They are found both individually and in herds grazing about in large fields of grass on the atoll. Between February and May, females lay between 9 and 25 rubbery eggs in a shallow, dry nest. Usually, less than half of the eggs are fertile. Females can produce

multiple clutches of eggs in a year. After incubating for about eight months, the tiny, independent young hatch between October and December. Adwaita is the oldest known tortoise who was born in 1750 and died in 2006 at the Calcutta Zoo at 255 years of age.

He was one of four brought by British seamen from the Seychelles Islands as gifts to Robert Clive of the British East India Company in the 18th century. Yes, I cheated a bit with Wikipedia.

At the zoo, we have (notes by Maple): Noto (M) 90 years old, 505 pounds, loves chin scratches, missing back right foot Chelle (F) 70 years old, 330 pounds, loves male human visitors, will stand up like a statue when you scratch her back legs Patch (F) 60 years old, 130 pounds, slowest eater and likes to “talk” by grunting Petunia (F) 30 years old, 250 pounds, is partially blind and has some ‘pyramiding’ on shell Monk (F) 20 years old, 180 pounds, has lots of ‘pyramiding’ on shell, loves attention and hanging out with her best buddy Patch So, in conclusion, I ended up finding them almost as cute as Baby Yoda and I actually felt like I needed to say goodbye to them as I left. Did they care? I have no idea. But maybe….just maybe.

Imagine... gorgeous beaches and swaying palm trees... vibrant displays of bougainvillea and hibiscus blossoms... beautiful scenery at every turn... experiencing, firsthand, the gentle nature of a manatee or the thrill of just having spotted a wild parrot... walking through nature trails surrounded by Spanish moss and the calming soundscape of native wildlife... balmy evenings with shimmering orange and purple sunsets... basking in sunshine year-round and barely a winter to speak of...

It all sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it? Like being in the tropics of the Caribbean or some other exotic part of the world. But all of these wonderful things (and so much more) are right here in our own back yard! South Florida is such a beautiful part of the Sunshine State and our own West Palm Beach is one of its mainstays.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to our little corner of paradise lately and got to thinking how easy it might be to take the natural beauty that surrounds us for granted. We’re so accustomed to it. But a healthy environment is not only beautiful - it’s important.

For example, trees provide oxygen and absorb air pollutants, nature trails protect plant and animal species, area plantings help to prevent erosion, and removing litter keeps our wildlife safer and our air cleaner... just to name a few :) I wondered what I could do to help out in this regard and after a bit of research it turns out there’s a whole LOT one can do if feeling so inclined!
