ATU emerges as the university of choice
FEATURED INSIDE World-class buildings and facilities at the heart of ATU’s growth
Just four years after its establishment, Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is already making its mark on Ireland’s higher education landscape.
F
ormed in 2022 from a merger of institutes in Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal, ATU educates more than 30,000 students – making ATU now one of the largest universities in Ireland. Its growth tells a broader story about Irish education and regional ambition. Drawing students from
some of the country’s most rural communities, ATU’s nine campuses stretch from Letterkenny to Galway City, offering pathways that keep young people closer to home while opening routes into high‑demand fields such as engineering, computing, health sciences and construction. Nearly 5,000
first‑year students enrolled at ATU last year alone, a striking vote of confidence in the university. Over the last 3 years, between 75% to 80% of students accepting a place at ATU were offered their first‑preference programme – making ATU the university of choice.
Over the last year, ATU has expanded programme provision and developed new programmes in areas such as Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, and Physiotherapy, with further programme developments in the pipeline that will serve the needs and demands across the region.

In the west and north‑west, a new academic era has arrived – and it is growing fast.
The expansion in programme provision is being matched with heavy investment. New STEM facilities in Galway and Sligo, and a €25m library and teaching building in Letterkenny are transforming campuses, while a new Veterinary Medicine School in Donegal is set to bring a flagship national programme to the north‑west. Most recently ATU’s Sligo campus officially opened new and refurbished facilities costing €35m, delivered under Project Ireland 2040 and funded through the Higher Education Authority. Government investment in research equipment and digital infrastructure has supported ATU’s continued growth as a research‑active university alongside its strong teaching tradition. Across the region and beyond, ATU delivers opportunity, skills and innovation. With applied, industryfocused programmes ATU supports and boosts significantly the region it serves. Still young, still evolving, ATU has already proved that scale and ambition are no longer the sole preserve of large urban cities.
