The second paper in the Atlantic Council Strategy Paper series, A US Strategy for Sustainable Energy Security, argues that US energy strategy should primarily focus on preventing the catastrophic consequences of climate change by accelerating the modernization of its energy sector. The strategy presented in this paper would allow the United States to achieve this objective, building upon the progress made in the last decade. It would also maintain and enhance America’s edge in the energy domain, boost the competitiveness of the economy; facilitate the provision of sustainable energy globally; ensure the energy security of key allies in Europe and Asia, while preventing rivals and adversaries from using energy resources as a weapon; and reduce the volatility of global energy markets to strengthen global growth. The strategy offers the United States a pathway to rapidly become a low carbon leader.
