Automotive Industry in Boyertown • Tung Sol arrived in Boyertown in 1945. The company was making fuses for WWII but the war ended. They were so happy with the warm welcome they received when moving to Boyertown, they decided to maintain the plant they had and use it for the company’s headlamp production operation. This operation made Boyertown the Headlamp Capital of America.

• In December of 1965 the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles opened its doors. The Museum is a showcase of the impact that Berks County and Southeast PA have made on the transportation industry.

• During Boyertown’s Centennial Celebration in 1966, the first Duryea Day was held. The event is an antique and classic car show named after the Berks County automaker Charles E. Duryea.

• Today the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and the Duryea Day event are tourist attractions that continue to bring people to the Boyertown area.

Boyertown Auto Works • December 1872, Jeremiah Sweinhart announced he had started a business making carriages, buggies, and sleighs.

• Between 1906 and 1910, Sweinhart electrified the carriage works. The factory was operating with electric lighting and two electric motors to power the lines operating the machinery.

• The Carriage Works became the Boyertown Auto Body Works in 1926 and became one of the first and largest builders of delivery truck bodies in the world. In 1942 the Auto Body Works modified a Ford sedan delivery car, cutting it in half, expanding it, and rebuilding it to create the first ambulance for Lions Community Ambulance Service in Boyertown.

• The Body Works closed its doors in 1990.

Pottstown Car Companies Car-oriented industries thrived in Pottstown as well. A few of the various companies that once called Pottstown home range from automobiles to automobile parts.

• In the late 1880’s the Light Cycle Company was established in Pottstown

by William I. Grubb to meet the demand for bicycles. The company built “horseless carriages” in the first years of the century. The Light

Manufacturing and Foundry Company eventually moved into the production of automobile gears and airplane parts. Eventually, they took over the plant of the Chadwick Engineering Company.

• Chadwick Engineering Company – the Chadwick automobile was an early American car built in Pottstown shortly after the turn of the century and the company, which was originally famous for racing cars, made a closed body style car that sold for $6500.

• Mr. George C. Lee founded United States Axle in Pottstown in 1919.

Mr. Lee was a friend of Charles E. Duryea who came to Pottstown in 1919 to form the Direct Drive Motor Company – producer of the Champion automobile until 1927.

• For a number of years the United States Axle Company produced front and rear axles, and were the first in America to build front-wheel brake axles. Today, the company produces precision axles, shafts, and cylinders for industrial original equipment manufacturers.

• In 1902 Clarence Winfred Spicer made his dream come true: he found a more efficient way to transfer automotive power to the wheels that moved a car, and the Spicer Universal Joint was born. The Spicer Manufacturing Company originally located in Pottstown in 1919.

Production started in February of 1920. In 1939 Charles A. Dana became interested in the company and in 1946 the organization’s name was changed to the Dana Corporation. The plant is still located on the site of what was originally the Old Chadwick Engineering Company.

• 1923 saw the arrival of Neapco Products, Inc. Originally, the company D.K. Bullens Co., was manufacturing and working on heat treatment of permanent magnets for the radio industry. In 1928 the company purchased the New England Auto Products Corporation and that company’s production equipment was moved to Pottstown. After this merger the company began to manufacture automotive universal joints and parts.

• In addition to the multiple companies that were involved in the automotive industry in the Pottstown community, the wide streets of Downtown Pottstown made the area a destination for weekend “cruising.”

• Several businesses, supporting the auto industry in various ways, call Pottstown home.

Access to quality health care is a key component to a truly livable community. The tri-county area is a well-oiled machine, full of family physicians, orthopedic specialists, surgeons and rehabilitation, nursing and assisted living facilities. There are also several non-profit organizations in the region that are dedicated to creating awareness and education on health issues. These organizations include:

the communities they serve. Grantmaking priority areas focus on healthy behaviors in schools, parks and networks, health access, strengthening nonprofits and building capacity for community economic development.

A few accomplishments include: • Healthy Bodies Health Minds Institute • PEAK Initiative • Grand Opening of Community Health & Dental Care’s new location In May 2018, the Foundation partnered with the LPGA Symetra Tour’s Valley Forge Invitational. The event raised a collective $17,500, split evenly among three of the Foundation’s grantees.

Community Health and Dental Care Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation (PAHWF) – “We Fit Together” Mission: enhance the health and wellness of area residents, providing education, funding and programs that motivate people to adopt healthy lifestyles.

In 2018, Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation celebrated 15 years of grantmaking! The organization has set forth to inspire the community to make healthier choices via grants to local schools, parks and area non-profit organizations over the past 15 years. To commemorate this milestone, PAHWF chose the slogan “We Fit Together,” to recognize the unity of the Foundation, our grantees, and the surrounding communities.

This anniversary is bigger than PAHWF, because it shines a spotlight on the impact their grantees have made and continue to make daily in

Community Health and Dental Care (CHDC) opened a new location at the Coventry Mall on August 6, 2018. The space was renovated to become a state of the art medical and dental non-profit health center. The organization, whose mission is to identify gaps in health services and to ensure access to appropriate levels of care for all people in the service area regardless of their ability to pay, first opened in 2008 and treated 39 patients the first week.

The new facility expands to nearly 32,000 square feet and is designed as a medical, dental, vision, fully integrated behavioral health, medical dispensary, Medication Assistance Treatment, OBGYN and Women’s health program. CHDC will also be adding Physical Therapy for their patients and opening a community marketplace within the new space to sublease office space to community organizations that mirror CHDC’s mission. continued on page 10

Valley Forge Invitational Junior Golf Clinic Community Health & Dental Care was presented with the 2018 Community Impact Award.

CHDC’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of their new state of the art facilities at 351 West Schuylkill Road in Pottstown!

CHDC provides free transportation, to and from appointments, to its over 24,000 registered patients. CHDC will also be opening Dash’s Learning Den, where people will have access to 14 computers offering a variety of free training programs.

Finally, CHDC will continue to partner with community organizations to develop a coordination of care within our community. It will utilize the beautiful new space to attract new patients who are insured, underinsured or not insured to receive quality healthcare in a quality atmosphere all in a one-stop shopping experience. With all these services under one roof, clients can make multiple appointments for the same day!

Pottstown Hospital Tower Health Reading Health System completed the acquisition of five hospitals and their associated assets from subsidiaries of Community Health Systems - with an effective date of October 1, 2017. Tower Health includes Reading Hospital in West Reading; Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville; Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia; Jennersville Hospital in West Grove; Phoenixville Hospital in Phoenixville; and Pottstown Hospital in Pottstown.

Amazing Raise In early winter of 2017, the TriCounty Community Network set forward a goal of helping local nonprofit organizations increase their fundraising and organizational awareness through a regional one day giving campaign. The result was a movement the organization named The Amazing Raise. The idea was to provide local nonprofit organizations with the opportunity to raise funds, both online and in person, with the promise of a proportional funding match based on the amount raised.

The Amazing Raise is a 24-hour giving challenge that brings together the Tri-County region's (Montgomery, Northern Chester, Eastern Berks) nonprofit community to help raise much needed unrestricted funds and shine a spotlight on the work nonprofits do to make the 422 corridor a better

place to live and work!

Route 724 Initiative In May of 2017, the Rt. 724 Corridor Initiative Committee was revisited by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC), in partnership with the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Chester County Planning Commission.The purpose was to bring together current stakeholders to focus on economic development opportunities, marketing the regional trail system, and balancing open space along the Route 724 corridor and its surrounding commercial region.

The Route 724 Opportunity Sites map is an interactive map that the Chester County Planning Commission created in collaboration with CCEDC and 7 participating municipalities. The map highlights, markets, and raises awareness of priority sites with development interest along the 12-mile corridor to help cultivate jobs and enhance regional employment and growth in the area. The map is accessible on the Chamber’s website – www.tricountyareachamber.com and the CCEDC’s website – ccedcpa.com.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CEDARVILLE Engineering’s new office space.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for CEDARVILLE Engineering in July 2018.

Ribbon Cuttings Welcoming new businesses to the tri-county area is part of the Chamber’s Supporting Commerce focus. Businesses do not have to be a member in order for the Chamber to host a ribbon cutting at their locations. The Chamber provides this service to create a bridge between the business and the community they are joining. Ribbon cuttings can be for a new business, a grand re-opening, a new product and celebrating renovations or additions to a business.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CEDARVILLE Engineering Group, LLC April Barkasi started her company in March of 2010. The company that started with four people, now employs over 35 and anticipates growing to 50 employees within the next two years.

The staff at CEDARVILLE moved into the 5th floor of the BB&T building at 159 East High Street in June of 2018. This move merged three different company locations, centralized the team and provided easy access to Rt. 422 and a variety of quality of life features to attract and retain top talent.

That move did not happen until after extensive renovations took place to office space that had not been occupied for years. There was asbestos remediation, fixing broken pipes, replacing ceilings, removing wallpaper, modifying the layout of the space, and refurbishing an elevator.

CEDARVILLE specializes in federal contracts as well as municipal, state, construction, and regulatory specialties and is certified by the federal government as a “woman-owned business.”

CEDARVILLE was presented with the Economic Development Award at the 2018 Economic Development Luncheon. This award is presented to a project that provides quality land use improvement, generates economic benefits for the community, and/or has the potential for creating new jobs.

Limerick Township Limerick Township recently developed a business strategy with a pro-business philosophy that has guided its actions for several years.

The plan focuses on: 1. Improving efficiencies and reducing costs without a reduction in the level of services; 2. Seeking alternative non-tax revenues to lessen the tax burden of existing residents; 3. Instituting long-range planning to properly position Limerick for the next phase of growth.

The Board of Supervisors also recognized the increasing calls for service burdening the townships public safety departments.

• To ensure a high level of service within their Police Department, ten additional police officers have been added to the department, which now stands at 30 sworn officers.

• An increased cooperative effort with both independent fire companies has grown into Township support for a $15-milliondollar long-term capital program. The positive relationship with their fire service volunteers has set in place a mutually agreed upon process which will result in the consolidation of both fire organizations in 2019.

• The Board also set forth a long-range capital improvement plan which has resulted in the construction of new facilities for the police, public works, and fire company, all of which are projected to meet their needs for the next 30-years.

Several of the leaders present at that meeting stepped up, without hesitation, and agreed to provide seed money to fund the launch of the campaign. Investments made by individuals through special funds in these zones would be allowed to defer or eliminate federal taxes on capital gains.

The governor was given the opportunity to designate up to 25 percent of census tracts that either have poverty rates of at least 20 percent or median family incomes of no more than 80 percent of statewide or metropolitan area family income.

• Through PAID’s efforts, Pottstown has three designated QOZ’s.

Keystone employment and economic Plan • This specific plan provides a vision of what is possible for redevelopment of the Keystone Boulevard corridor in Pottstown Borough and West Pottsgrove Township. The plan creates a development concept that is endorsed by the governing bodies of the two municipalities. This concept is described and illustrated, and is followed by recommendations for implementation, including principles for development, to be incorporated into a subsequent zoning amendment.

We needed to expand our message to the outside world to encourage other businesses to join in that momentum. Building a Better Boyertown (BBB) In 2017, BBB was awarded $1 million in grants from the BB&T Economic Growth Fund (created after National Penn Bank merged with BB&T).
