Getting Here St. Johns County is located just south of Jacksonville in Northeast Florida. It is bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by the St. Johns River.

ARRIVING BY CAR I-95 runs north-south from Maine to Miami. I-10 runs west-east from Los Angeles to Jacksonville. The two meet in downtown Jacksonville about 40 miles north of St. Augustine. From the north, take I-95 south into St. Johns County. From the south, take I-95 north into St. Johns County.

ARRIVING BY AIR Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) – one hour north of St. Augustine, 45 minutes from Ponte Vedra Beach – is the primary commercial airport serving St. Johns County. Shuttle service is available between JIA and St. Augustine (reservations requested – see numbers at right). Personal and charter aircraft can also use the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St. Augustine, a full-service aviation facility two miles north of St. Augustine on U.S. 1.

Important Information ST. AUGUSTINE’S HISTORIC DOWNTOWN PARKING FACILITY The Historic Downtown Parking Facility (HDPF) is located on West Castillo Drive just off U.S. 1, within walking distance to St. George Street and San Marco Avenue as well as the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. The four-story, 400,000-square-foot structure offers 1,170 parking spaces and is open 24 hours per day year-round. It features a fully automated payment system, security, and easy connections to sightseeing vehicles and horse-drawn carriage services.

Parking at the HDPF is $1.25 per hour with a $7.50 per day maximum. During selected peak days, a flat, all-day rate of $7.00 is payable on entry to ease exiting for visitors.

The adjacent Visitor Information Center has clean restrooms, a small gift shop, kiosks with touch screen guides, current special event, arts and cultural information, and rows and rows of brochures and guides. For more information about the free shuttle and parking rates, please call 904-484-5160.

PARKING METERS AND PAY STATIONS Pay stations for parking are located throughout downtown St. Augustine, where visitors are issued a printed receipt that must be placed on the vehicle’s dashboard. The cost for parking is $1.50 per hour at meters and $10 a day to park in the parking garage for visitors. The meters accept quarters, nickels and dimes; credit cards and debit cards. St. Augustine Ponte Vedra Beach Anastasia Island Vilano Beach World Golf Village The oldest continuously-occupied European settlement in the continental United States, St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565 (42 years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock).

St. Augustine is situated a mere 40 miles from the glassy skyscrapers of downtown Jacksonville, 100 miles from the rocket ships of Kennedy Space Center and 100 miles from the fantasy theme parks of Orlando – but the city’s rich history and cultural diversity make it seem worlds away.

The city has more than 50 attractions including historical sites and points of interest, living history museums, animal parks and ghost tours. Many are located within walking distance of one another in downtown historic St. Augustine, while others in the uptown antiques area or across the Bridge of Lions on Anastasia Island are accessible via tourist transportation, making it possible to see it all without having to move your car!

Guided walking tours as well as those conducted via tram, trolley, horse-drawn carriage or cruise boat all offer unique narratives of the story of historic St. Augustine, covering some of St. Augustine’s most popular landmarks.

Highlights include: The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, a living history museum which interprets life in colonial St. Augustine circa 1740.

The Fountain of Youth Discovery Park, where it is said that Ponce de Leon went in search of everlasting youth.

The Ponce de Leon and Alcazar Hotels, built by Standard Oil magnate Henry Flagler in the late 19th century. Today those grand Victorian structures house Flagler College, and St. Augustine City Hall and Lightner Museum, respectively.

The original 1888 Casa Monica Hotel, restored into a luxury hotel providing world-class accommodations.

Shopping in St. Augustine is a buyer’s delight with boutiques, gift shops and antique stores waiting to be discovered on nearly every downtown street.

Accommodations are plentiful and range from splendid resorts to charming bed and breakfast inns.

Dozens of unique restaurants dotted throughout St. Augustine, compose a varied collection of quaint cafés together with four-star rated dining establishments.

Founding of St. Augustine St. Augustine played an integral role in the early colonization of North America. Juan Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Puerto Rico, landed near present-day St. Augustine on Easter, March 27, 1513 in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. Claiming it for Spain, he named the beautiful land “La Florida” for the many flowers in bloom.

Over the following half century, Spain launched at least six unsuccessful attempts to establish an actual settlement in Florida. Finally, in 1564, the French beat them to it with the establishment of Fort Caroline along an area of high sand dune bluffs that overlook the St. Johns River in present-day Jacksonville. The new French colony posed a threat to the Spanish treasure fleets that sailed along the Florida coast.

As a result, King Philip II of Spain named his country’s most experienced admiral, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, as the new governor of Florida and instructed him not only to colonize the area, but also to drive out any settlers from foreign lands that he may encounter.

In 1565, Menendez drove the French out of Florida and founded St. Augustine as a permanent colony and military installation for Spain.

1565 Menendez establishes St. Augustine and drives the French out of nearby Ft. Caroline.

1586 English pirate Sir Francis Drake burns and pillages St. Augustine.

1668 Captain John Davis and his band of English buccaneers slaughter 60 townspeople in the streets and plunder their homes. Such clashes become increasingly common with the establishment of English colonies in Georgia and the Carolinas.

1672 Construction begins on St. Augustine’s famous coquina fort, the Castillo de San Marcos.

1696 The Castillo de San Marcos is completed. In its history it never falls to any outside attacks.

1702 Governor James Moore of Carolina leads a two-month siege on the Castillo without success.

1740 British General James Oglethorpe of Georgia launches another unsuccessful attack on St. Augustine.

1763 After the French and Indian War, Spain trades Florida to Great Britain in exchange for Havana. St. Augustine comes under British rule for the first time.

1783 After maintaining its allegiance to Britain during the American Revolution, St. Augustine and Florida are returned to Spanish rule under the terms of the Treaty of Paris, signed

by England, France and Spain.

1821 A colorful ceremony in St. Augustine marks the peaceful transfer of power as Spain sells Florida to the United States. Spanish soldiers leave St. Augustine, never to return again.

1837 Osceola, famous leader of the Seminole Indians, is captured near St. Augustine and held prisoner for two months in the Castillo de San Marcos before being transferred to South Carolina. This occurs during the Seminole War, which carries on for much of Florida’s 24-year territorial period.

1842 The Seminole War ends in Florida with the surrender of much of the Seminole nation.

1845 Florida becomes the twenty-seventh state of the Union. Tallahassee is selected as the capital due to a geographical compromise between St. Augustine and Pensacola. Tourism also begins to take hold about this time.

1862 During the Civil War, a Union blockade appears off the city’s inlet and demands the surrender of St. Augustine. That night, Confederate troops retreat and the Union occupies the city through the end of the Civil War in 1865.

1883 The Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax River railway is completed, linking St. Augustine with its booming neighbor to the north, Jacksonville. During the winter of 1883-1884, Henry M. Flagler, co-founder of the Standard Oil Company, visits St. Augustine and is amazed by its charm and tourism potential.

1883 Henry Flagler’s two magnificent hotels, the Hotel Ponce de Leon (now Flagler College) and the Alcazar Hotel (now houses the Lightner Museum) open for an elite tourist clientele. He also purchases the Cordova Hotel (now the Casa Monica). The three hotels make St. Augustine a magnet for high society travelers, earning the city the nickname “Newport of the South.”

1896 Flagler’s East Coast Railway reaches Miami, opening the door to developing South Florida.

Today, St. Augustine remains a popular international tourist destination, retaining a unique mix of small town charm, Southern hospitality, historical integrity and seaside appeal.

In Ponte Vedra, the community of Nocatee is one of the fastest-growing, master-planned, unincorporated towns in the Country, and it also offers a popular farmer’s market and other outdoor events such as the Ponte Vedra Auto Show that is sure to be fun for the entire family.

Ponte Vedra Beach History Ponte Vedra Beach has a rich and unique history. Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer best known for his pursuit of the legendary “fountain of youth,” is believed to have landed on what would later become Ponte Vedra Beach on April 2, 1513. A small settlement begins to take shape in the Ponte Vedra Beach area. Haciendas were built and the roots for gracious living were planted.

The area remained sparsely populated through the late 19th century. In 1914, minerals were discovered, and a community known as Mineral City grew up around the mining operations there. Titanium extraction was significant, as well as that of zircon and rutile. These minerals were recovered from beach sands by a private commercial firm called National Lead Company, directed

by Henry Holland Buckman and George A. Pritchard.

During World War I titanium was a component of poison gas, and therefore a strategic mineral.

After the war, mineral demand dropped, so the National Lead Company changed its focus to building a resort community. The name of the community was changed to Ponte Vedra, apparently after the city of Pontevedra, Galicia, (Spain). The actual reason

is unknown, but there was a rumor that one of the developers read a newspaper article that erroneously claimed Christopher Columbus was born there.

In the early 1920s, the National Lead Company built a 9-hole golf course and 12-room clubhouse constructed of logs for the use of their employees. After the company left Ponte Vedra, that real estate became the foundation of the Ponte Vedra Club. Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co. was a developer of Ponte Vedra Beach in the early 1930s and owned the Ponte Vedra Club.

Today, Ponte Vedra Beach is home to THE PLAYERS Championship golf tournament and its world headquarters for the PGA Tour, thanks to a now-legendary 1978 deal in which developers Jerome and Paul Fletcher “sold” PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman 415 densely wooded acres. The purchase price: one dollar.

In addition, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP Tour) also calls Ponte Vedra Beach home, bringing even more national and international attention to the area as a recreational Mecca.

Vilano Beach Vilano Beach is synonymous with sand and water, as it is located on the northeastern coast of Florida and surrounded by water on nearly every side. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Intracoastal Waterway on the west, and the St. Augustine Inlet on the south, Vilano Beach is the perfect picture of a sunny Florida town.

Driving into Vilano Beach is a highly recommended experience itself. From St. Augustine, simply follow A1A north, over the Usina Bridge (also known as the “Vilano Bridge”). The vista that emerges as you reach the crest of the bridge is one of stunning, almost surreal beauty.

Rest, Relaxation and Lots of Fun A boardwalk with environmental signage passes over the saltwater marsh and beneath the Usina Bridge, joining the residential area and Town Center. Vilano Beach offers two pavilions with public access to the ocean and river, one of which features a children’s splash fountain.

The area is one of the most popular spots in the county for swimming, surfing and skim boarding.

But if more adventurous activities are to your liking, you won’t miss out on any of the action here; rent a deep-sea or fresh-water charter and enjoy a day of fishing. Parasailing, windsurfing and jet-skiing equipment is also available for rental.

There are a handful of hotels and motels situated within walking distance to the beach, as well as several eclectic restaurants with oceanside seating and Intracoastal views sprinkled along Coastal Highway A1A.

Vilano Area Beaches North Beach – Over the Vilano Bridge on A1A North at second highway walkover. Facilities include restrooms, showers, highway walkover, off beach parking, grills, playground, and picnic pavilion. Pavilion use is on a first come, first serve basis. Sunbathing and fishing are popular activities on this coquina-type beach.

Surfside – One-half mile north of the Vilano vehicle access ramp on Highway A1A. Offers newly-renovated restrooms, dune walkover, showers and picnic tables.

Pavilion is available on a first come, first serve basis.

This beach is a popular spot for sunbathing, fishing, horseback riding and 4x4 driving. Horseback riding is allowed north of the Surfside access ramp year-round with a special beach-use permit. Usina Beach – Four miles north of Vilano Beach on Highway A1A. Beach offers endless recreational uses including fishing, sunbathing, beachcombing, surfing, and vehicle access ramp. Anastasia Island Just across the Intracoastal Waterway from St. Augustine you will find Anastasia Island, a barrier island lined with wide, sandy beaches. It offers sun-seekers a number of options in addition to the well-known St. Augustine Beach, home of the St. Johns County Ocean Pier and Pavilion, which features a splash fountain and playground for children to enjoy.

St. Augustine Beach is an area boasting a variety of motel, hotel, condominium and camping resort accommodations, and is located four miles south of downtown St. Augustine on Highway A1A Beach Boulevard in the City of St. Augustine Beach.

Area Beaches

Frank B. Butler County Park – Two miles south of St. Augustine Beach on Highway A1A. Butler Beach was developed as a recreation area for blacks during

the age of segregation by Frank B. Butler, a wealthy black businessman.

Crescent Beach – Three miles south of St. Augustine Beach on Highway A1A. The coastline has a crescent-shaped curvature, affording beachcombers a breathtaking view of the many beach houses and low-lying condos that dot the landscape.

Fort Matanzas National Monument Beach – At the southern tip of Anastasia Island, at the Matanzas Inlet, seven and a half miles south of St. Augustine Beach on Highway A1A. Fort Matanzas is an old stone stronghold set on an island in the middle of the Matanzas River that is only accessible by ferry boat. About a mile farther south is Marineland, which opened in 1938 as the world’s first oceanarium.

River to Sea Preserve – At the south end of St. Johns County before entering the town of Marineland.

Small parking area on intracoastal side. Very limited off beach parking, just steps away from famous Marineland. Very quiet beach with coquina shells and plenty of opportunities for viewing wildlife.

Things to Do “On the Island” Pack up the car – on many of our beaches, you can even drive the car right onto the sand – bring a cooler with sandwiches and sodas and spend an entire day!

Other popular activities are beach volleyball, miniature golf, bicycling, roller-blading and tennis. Many

items such as surf boards, jet skis, and kayaks are available to rent from area retail shops, which also carry swimwear, beach accessories, casual wear and gifts.

More than 150 restaurants lining Highway A1A offer a taste of everything, and our relaxed beach lounges provide the perfect setting for a serving of nightly entertainment.

For additional dining and shopping, S.R. 312 is a causeway that connects the northern end of St. Augustine Beach with busy South St. Augustine, where many national chain restaurants and retailers are just a short drive away.

ADDITIONAL BEACHES IN OUR AREA Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) Between Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine on Highway A1A. Recreational activities include hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and bird watching.

Visit the GTMNERR education center, or follow the dune walkovers to the beach.

South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area Two and a quarter miles south of the GTMNERR on Highway A1A. Along with Mickler’s Landing, this beach is known as one of the best locations in the state for beachcombers to find fossilized shark teeth. A1A, the town’s main commercial artery, sports many upscale boutiques, eateries and shopping villages.

Shopaholics will appreciate two major outlet malls located just five miles south at I-95 and S.R. 16. St.

Augustine Premium Outlets have 85 stores while the St. Augustine Outlets have more than 75 stores.

A variety of restaurants and hotels, as well as a family amusement center, complement the outlet malls.

Beach Policies

Beach Driving & Parking Passes – Motor vehicles are permitted to park on several stretches of St. Johns County Beaches for a moderate fee. Traffic is regulated and the ten-mile-per-hour speed limit is strictly enforced. Pedestrians are urged to stay alert and use caution. Soft sand and high tides may prevent access and driving on the beaches.

Passes are required for vehicular access from March 1 through September 30. Daily and annual passes to drive and park on beaches can be obtained from toll booth operators. Preseason annual pass sales run December 1 through March 1. Rates are $40 for St. Johns County residents and $60 for non-residents and can be purchased at Recreation and Parks Office, St. Johns County Tax Collector’s Offices and the St. Johns County Pier. Handicap rates, $30. Day rate: $6 for St. Johns County residents, $8 for non-residents.

Beach Use Permits – For special uses of the beach, such as events, horseback riding, commercial fishing and 4x4 activities, permits are required. Please visit www.sjcfl.us/HCP/Permits.aspx.

Beach Etiquette & Policy – Please be considerate of the environment, the animals that live there, and other beach goers to help ensure St. Johns County’s beaches are a joy now and for years to come.

Driving and parking hours on permitted stretches of St. Johns County Beaches are from 8:00am to 7:30pm during sea turtle season (May 1 – Oct. 31).

Possession of alcoholic beverages and glass containers is prohibited.

Unleashed animals prohibited, owner must remove defecated material from beach.

Lanterns and flashlights are strictly prohibited during sea turtle season (May 1 – Oct. 31).

No loud music.

Harassing animals is strictly prohibited.

Open fires prohibited; heated objects shall be disposed of properly.

Fireworks prohibited.

Overnight camping prohibited.

Minimize all beach front lighting visible from the beach.

Prohibited to solicit or canvass commercial activities.

Motorized boats are not authorized for launching from the Atlantic Ocean Beach.

Do not remove beach sand and vegetation.

Reduce litter and marine debris by disposing of your trash properly.

At the end of your visit fill any holes left by sandcastles and tire ruts.

Tents, shelters, chairs, catamarans, trailers, towels, shoes and other such items are prohibited from being left on beach overnight.

When crossing dunes, use designated walkovers.

All pedestrian activities are prohibited within the Conservation Zone, 15 feet seaward of the dune line.

Today, more than 50 historic points of interest are nestled in our nation’s oldest city amidst boutiques, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and bed and breakfast inns.

The downtown area offers a glimpse of what life must have been like many years ago, with homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places standing alongside more recently built structures embodying the same Old Florida style.

On the outskirts are shopping malls and retail centers, including the St. Augustine Premium and Prime Outlets.

The unique mix of old and new beckons visitors to return to St. Augustine time and again – often for good!

Across the Intracoastal Waterway is beautiful Anastasia Island, a barrier island lined with wide, sandy beaches loved by sun-seekers. The well-known St. Augustine Beach is located four miles south of downtown St. Augustine in the City of St. Augustine Beach. This area is home to the St. Johns County Ocean Pier and Pavilion, which has a splash fountain and playground.

Popular activities include swimming, surfing, beach volleyball, miniature golf, bicycling and tennis. A variety of accommodations, more than 150 restaurants and lounges, and a myriad of surf shops line A1A Beach Boulevard.

Marsh Creek Country Club, a popular Anastasia Island development, offers luxurious homes around an 18-hole championship golf course.

Vilano Beach, one of the most popular locations in the county for surfing, skim boarding, jet skiing and fishing, is located two miles north of historic St. Augustine just over the Usina Bridge, also known as the “Vilano Bridge,” and is surrounded by water on nearly every side.

A nature walk passes over the saltwater marsh and beneath the Vilano Bridge, joining the residential area and Town Center Pavilions, one of which features a children’s splash fountain.

There are a handful of hotels and motels within walking distance of the beach, as well as several eclectic restaurants with oceanside seating and Intracoastal views sprinkled along Coastal Highway AIA. NORTH ST. JOHNS: Ponte Vedra is just 20 minutes north of St. Augustine and features top-rated golf and tennis resorts and exclusive residential neighborhoods.

Some of the most prestigious golf tournaments are headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, including the PGA Tour’s flagship event, THE PLAYERS Championship.

If golf and tennis don’t pique your interests, you’re sure to find something that does at Ponte Vedra’s 138-acre Davis Park, complete with fishing ponds stocked for children’s catch and release, dog parks, a playground, and playing fields for soccer, football, softball and baseball.

Nocatee is a master-planned, unincorporated town offering its residents a unique balance of work and play in a walkable, livable community for all ages.

Atlantic Ocean, approximately 85% of the community is in St. Johns County, and the remaining 15% is in Duval County.

Only 30 minutes from St. Augustine to the south or Jacksonville to the north, country living meets convenience in the picturesque community of northwest St. Johns County, where choice residential possibilities run along scenic State Roads 16, 13, and the St. Johns River.

Popular areas for outdoor family fun include Mills Field Recreational Park and Julington Creek Plantation Park and the recently opened Rivertown Park.

Residents also enjoy boating, sailing and canoeing in the northwest, an area famous for its bass and freshwater fishing.

The communities of RiverTown, Fruit Cove, Switzerland and Julington Creek make up the rapidly growing area called “St. Johns,” known for its numerous golf courses, boutiques and riverside mansions.

Palencia, a master-planned golfing community located off U.S. Highway 1 North, spans 1,450 acres with more than two miles of land bordering the tidal marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway and Marshall Creek. The World Golf Village is a resort-style community enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, featuring the World Golf Hall of Fame and IMAX Theatre, as well as unparalleled accommodations and amenities.

St. Johns Golf and Country Club and South Hampton are golf course communities along County Road 210.

Growth in the northwest area continues as multiuse development projects, such as RiverTown, gain momentum.

SOUTH ST. JOHNS: This area is St. Johns County’s Agricultural Center. A drive south along State Road 207 will take you into southwest St. Johns County, primarily agricultural land comprised of the small residential area of Vermont Heights; just west of I-95; the unincorporated area of Elkton at County Road 305; the community of Spuds on County Road 13; and the Town of Hastings 18 miles southwest of St. Augustine.

Hastings dates back to the late 1800s when Henry Flagler needed a source of fresh vegetables for his St. Augustine hotels. He persuaded Thomas Horace Hastings (a relative of his architect) to develop the farmlands, and to this day the Town of Hastings is known as the “Potato Capital of Florida.” Other crops include cabbage, onions, eggplant, sod and ornamental horticulture.

In this part of our county you can still experience the Old Florida main street, bustling farmsteads, and historic St. Ambrose Parish.
