COME SAIL AWAY

L.A. MARITIME INSTITUTE’S TOPSAIL YOUTH PROGRAM TURNS 30

Tall ships played an important role on the creation of the Port of Los Angeles and for the last three decades Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s (LAMI) TopSail Youth Program have kept that tradition alive and vibrant.

Founded in 1992 by retired science teacher Jim Gladson, the program was started to not only teach kids about life at sea, but to use the sea to educate youth about life. Since the beginning, the program has enriched the lives of more than 130,000 kids and thanks to the generosity of the community most of the programs are free of charge.

According to their mission statement, "LAMI serves to empower youth to discover their greater potential through extraordinary at-sea experiences aboard educational sailing vessels built to train and equip young people with 21st century leadership skills, and inspire maritime and STEM career paths."

The program, which started with one tall sailing vessel, now has four: the 90-foot topsail schooner Swift of Ipswich (their original ship), the 110-foot “Twin Brigantines” Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson (built at the foot of 6th street in 2000-03), and the 1941-built American Pride (based in Long Beach).

The popular multi-day sails consist of activities that build on the skills and knowledge gained on prior sails, such as respect, patience, self-discipline, integrity, and tenacity. During these voyages, youth sleep aboard the ship, plan and prepare all the meals, and organize and coordinate daily activities, in addition to sailing the ship.

As LAMI celebrates 30 years teaching Southern California youth, they’ve become a beacon of transformative experiential education and opportunity and have grown to serve Los Angeles County and beyond with four educational tall ships.

The organization’s immersive youth education programs and robust adult volunteer opportunities continue to be founded in LAMI’s TopSail philosophy of “Using the sea to educate about life.”

For more info on the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, visit lamitopsail.org or call (310) 833-6055.

WEST HARBOR: WHAT TO EXPECT

A LOOK AT THE LONG-AWAITED L.A. WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

West Harbor, the highly anticipated 42-acre dining and entertainment complex along the L.A. Waterfront, finally broke ground last year, marking the beginning of an exciting new era for San Pedro.

The development, a partnership between The Ratkovich Company and Jerico Development, is slated to open in late 2024. It replaces the once beloved Ports O’ Call Village, a faux New England fishing village that opened in San Pedro in 1962. The village was razed in 2020 to make way for West Harbor.

With a focus on dining and entertainment, West Harbor has announced seven anchor tenants so far: Mike Hess Brewing, Yamashiro, Poppy + Rose, Sugar Factory, Jay Bird’s Chicken, an unnamed Mexican cantina, and Hopscotch, an immersive art installation.

“This is industrial theater,” says Eric Johnson of Jerico Development about the ships coming and going in the Main Channel, the backdrop to West Harbor. “It’s free. You can’t see this stuff anywhere else. And it’s also part of our mantra about being unique, authentic, and fun. We’re just embracing the authenticity of it all.”

WHO’S MOVING IN?

San Pedro loves its craft beers. That’s why it’s no surprise that the San Diego-based Mike Hess Brewing was the first to sign on the dotted line for West Harbor. With plans for an 18,000 square foot, indoor-outdoor, dog-friendly biergarten right next to the highly anticipated amphitheater, weekends on the waterfront are going to be a lot different when West Harbor opens.

“It’s a big format space; he’s got a mezzanine, and it’s going to have a catwalk where you walk between the fermenting barrels and the storage barrels,” says Johnson. “You’re going to be up on the second floor with a big brewery downstairs and this giant biergarten outside.”

It’s worth noting that patrons will be able to carry alcoholic drinks outside throughout most of the West Harbor property. “Just as they do in Europe,” adds Johnson.

Maybe the most surprising announcement was Yamashiro and Sugar Factory, both co-owned by film producer and real estate developer Elie Samaha. Yamashiro, the century-old Japanese-fusion restaurant in the Hollywood Hills, will open its second location along the waterfront where the San Pedro Fish Market currently resides.

Sugar Factory is an over-the-top American brasserie and candy shop with locations all over the world. Frequented by celebrities and influencers, they’re known for their decadent drinks and desserts. “It’s this fun, kid, sugar-infused place during the day, then at night, it becomes this booze and sugar-fueled, trendy nightclub,” says Johnson.

Poppy + Rose, the popular country-style breakfast and brunch spot in Downtown Los Angeles, will open a new location along the waterfront with a 2,000 square foot patio and active garden, where they’ll grow their own vegetables and herbs on-site.

Jay Bird’s Chicken brings some Nashville flair to the waterfront with their fast-casual hot chicken sandwiches. They have a few locations in Southern California, including Long Beach and Huntington Beach. Hopscotch is an immersive and experiential 17,000 square foot art gallery that includes a restaurant and lounge area, plus an additional 2,000 square feet of outdoor space. According to their website, they “bring together artists in collaborative environments to create unique, impactful, and distinct shared experiences.”

The seventh lease is for an unnamed Mexican cantina from the same people behind Yamashiro and Sugar Factory.

In addition to the newly signed tenants, plans are still in the works for the much-anticipated amphitheater. The new design features a large open grass area that can be converted to a 4,500- or 6,200-seat venue, depending on the event. Also, next to the amphitheater will be an area for weddings and special events.

“It’s iconic,” says Johnson. “They like to have a view. This is only their second store, and they’ve chosen San Pedro.”

Harbor Breeze Cruises, owned by Dan Salas, will be bringing his fleet of double-decker sightseeing ships to West Harbor, offering whale watching and dinner cruises.

The northernmost section, closest to the new Town Square, will be the possible location of a new waterfront hotel, which may be included in the last phase of the project. But before that happens, that area will be filled with recreational activities, including a modern dog park, pickleball courts, and other family-friendly waterside attractions. Plans are also in the works to move the Battleship Iowa to the southern portion of West Harbor to make room for a third cruise ship terminal.

And if you’re worried about parking, there will be 2,000 parking spaces available, with plans for trolley/shuttle service between West Harbor and Downtown San Pedro.

For more info on West Harbor, visit westharborla.com.

ARTS & CULTURE

THE SAN PEDRO ARTS & CULTURAL DISTRICT’S

peninsula geography creates a small town atmosphere despite belonging to the nation’s secondlargest city. The historic core of Downtown San Pedro has been renting to artists since the 1920s, replete with studios in storefronts and warehouses. Many commercial buildings also house studios, organizations, and work/live options in the district.

The Arts District features colorful public art in the form of painted DOT boxes located at 25 locations near traffic signals. Large-scale murals grace the Warner Grand Theatre stage house and the walkway next to the historic venue. Two recently painted storm drains at 6th and Harbor Blvd. highlight the drain’s connection with the ocean. Numerous murals depict our commitment to public art throughout the district.

CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles, a permanent weekend market with handmade apparel, home decor, and food goods, houses many artists with space and marketing to sell their artwork.

Angels Gate Cultural Center offers studios in former army barracks for more than 50 artists of all disciplines. Vacant spaces remain open to new artists and organizations, providing more opportunities and promising to grow the district’s arts culture. These nontraditional spaces offer regular arts events, with monthly art openings and classes in settings all over the neighborhood.

Our First Thursday ArtWalk, one of the first in the region, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Thousands of people visit artist studios and galleries in Downtown San Pedro every first Thursday of the month to celebrate the visual arts, socialize, and support participating restaurants.

For a map and more information about the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, visit sanpedrowaterfrontartsdistrict.com.
