HARBOR ARRIVES AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE OF PLANNING, SAN PEDRO’S LONG-AWAITED WATERFRONT TRANSFORMATION IS FINALLY OPENING TO THE PUBLIC — RECONNECTING THE COMMUNITY TO THE HARBOR WITH FOOD, ENTERTAINMENT, CULTURE, AND COASTAL ENERGY

Along the San Pedro waterfront, West Harbor is transforming the former Ports O’ Call Village site into Southern California’s next great coastal destination. For developers Eric and Alan Johnson of Jerico Development, who have spent more than 40 years working in San Pedro, the project carries a deeply personal connection. As kids, they rode their bikes to the old Ports O’ Call Village, spending their allowance at the joke shop, and taking in the energy of the working harbor. West Harbor honors that same spirit, reimagined for a new era. Designed to feel authentic, welcoming, and worth returning to, the project is being shaped with the same energy and discovery that defined the waterfront for generations, now translated into an updated, multiday destination.

MOMENTUM ON THE WATERFRONT Since the Port of Los Angeles selected San Pedro-based Jerico Development and the Los Angeles-based Ratkovich Company to transform the site in 2013, the $500-million, 42-acre project has seen major additions, including new restaurants and retail stores, a 6,200-seat amphitheater in partnership with Nederlander Concerts, and a boutique amusement park featuring a 175-foot observation wheel, the tallest of its kind in California, and a promenade spanning the mile of public waterfront, positioning West Harbor as one of the most ambitious and transformative projects in San Pedro’s modern history.

FIRST LOOK AT WEST HARBOR West Harbor is welcoming visitors for a first look at the evolving destination this summer. In July 2026, West Harbor will begin its preview programming with an Official Los Angeles World Cup 26 Fan Zone, hosting live match broadcasts, food and beverage offerings, and interactive fan experiences. The Fan Zone will be held at the project’s future amphitheater and community gathering space. In addition, the iconic San Pedro Fish Market has returned through a temporary outdoor concept called The Landing, attracting visitors from across Southern California while developing its permanent flagship location within the project. Along the promenade, Harbor Breeze Cruises and the Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s tall ships remain in active operation, reinforcing the waterfront’s role as both an entertainment destination and a working maritime corridor. Wheel Fun Rentals offers a variety

of bike rentals for the whole family. San Pedro Water Sports will introduce small personal watercraft rentals, expanding access to on-water activities.

A GROWING CULINARY & CULTURAL LINEUP At the end of 2025, West Harbor announced six new dining and beverage concepts, further expanding the culinary offerings across its approximately 300,000 square feet of commercial space, many of which are independent, chef-driven, or family-owned concepts. Anchoring the south end of the project is Mike Hess Brewing, which will make its Los Angeles debut with a craft brewery and seaside beer garden overlooking the harbor. The concept will also introduce Mike Hess Distilling, offering signature cocktails and packaged spirits distilled on site. West Harbor’s Food Collective, a modern food hall showcasing diverse culinary talent, will debut a mix of first-to-market and regional favorite concepts, including Tacos El Franc, the Michelin-recognized Tijuana taqueria; Glass Box, a high-concept Asian dining experience; Paraná Empanadas, known for its traditional Argentine recipes; and a new outpost of the Redondo Beach favorite LoZio Pizza. Also joining the lineup is Freska Bar, bringing vibrant aguas frescas and micheladas paired with comfort-food favorites to the development’s Central Park. These concepts join an exciting culinary lineup that includes the San Pedro Fish Market’s new permanent location, a new location for Hollywood’s iconic Asian fusion restaurant Yamashiro, and dessert favorite The Baked Bear. Adding an experiential entertainment dimension is Hopscotch, an immersive gallery experience focused on interactive new media artists and installations. Designed as a collaborative environment that encourages exploration and shared engagement, the space introduces evolving, immersive artistic experiences to the project and complements the creative energy of the surrounding arts community. The development will also feature an array of allday recreation, including a 50,000-square-foot recreational complex featuring 6 padel courts and 10 pickleball courts, operated by The King of Padel, as well as a 22,000-square-foot membership dog park. After more than a decade, West Harbor is no longer a promise; it’s a reality. With this summer offering the first look at the destination, San Pedro’s long-awaited transformation is entering a new chapter and reconnecting the city with its waterfront. Angels Gate Cultural Center emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s that created artists' studios and exhibition space within the 1940s-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park. They have rotating gallery exhibits, art, music, drawing, printmaking, yoga classes, artists' studios, special film and poetry events, and provide professional work-studio space for artists.

Los Angeles Harbor Light (Angels Gate Lighthouse) At the tip of the two-mile-long breakwater, the 73-foot Angels Gate Lighthouse has welcomed sailors and global container ships every day since 1914. The best ways to view this steel-framed and cast-iron decorated tower are by the telescope turnout on S. Gaffey St. near 36th St. and from the Cabrillo Beach Pier.

Cabrillo Beach has two beaches – one outside the breakwater with ocean surf and the other within the harbor, a protected bay perfect for families with children. The Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse, a fishing pier, tide pools, picnic tables, and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium are all within walking distance. Grunion season runs March through August when the silvery fish emerge from the water at Cabrillo Beach to lay their eggs in the sand under a full or new moon.

The Cabrillo Beach Pier is a 1,200-foot-long concrete structure built in 1969 and remodeled in 1988. Depending on the weather and time of year, fishing can be good with a variety of species caught. No fishing license is required.

This Mediterranean-style building was built in 1932 for that year's boating events for the Olympic Games. It was declared a historic landmark in 1989 as one of the last bathhouses constructed in Southern California and renovated in 2002. Today, it's an annual gathering spot for the San Pedro Polar Bears Club New Year's Day swim and a popular recreation center.

Renowned architect Frank Gehry designed this research and public education facility that features the largest collection of Southern California marine life. Located at Cabrillo Beach, the aquarium specializes in hands-on experiences, creating wonder, and sharing the natural world. Murals by renowned artist John Van Hammersveld grace the walls of the gift shop.

Fort MacArthur Military Museum 3601 S. Gaffey St. ftmac.org

The Fort MacArthur Museum, established in 1985, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Fort MacArthur. This U.S. Army post protected the Los Angeles Harbor from 1914 to 1974. It was named after Lt. General Arthur MacArthur, whose son, Douglas MacArthur, commanded American forces in the Pacific during World War II. The museum's rooms, galleries, and corridors contain various exhibits and displays. There's also a K-9 service animal cemetery.

Resting peacefully on the knoll overlooking the Pacific Ocean since 1976, the bell's location affords an unsurpassed view of the L.A. Harbor, the Catalina Channel, and the sea terraces of San Pedro hill. The six-ton ceremonial bell rings only five times a year: New Year's Eve, Korean American Day (January 13), Independence Day (Hosted by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce), Korean Liberation Day (August 15), and Constitution Day (September 17).

The Marine Mammal Care Center is the only 24/7/365 safe haven for marine animals in Los Angeles County. Mammals, on the mend in contained outdoor pools, are visible to the public as they eat, rest, and play. Educational staff and volunteers greet visitors to explain the types of seals and sea lions and how they got there. Docent tours are available on weekends.

The Point Fermin Lighthouse celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024. Built in 1874, this graceful Victorian-style building, surrounded by colorful flower gardens, is one of the oldest continued page 13

Whether you’re passing the Battleship IOWA, discovering Historic Downtown San Pedro, or visiting local spots like Port Town Brewing Company or CRAFTED at the Port of LA, getting around is simple and convenient. Plenty of street and lot parking is available throughout town, but if you'd rather not drive, hop on the complimentary San Pedro Downtown Trolley or enjoy the waterfront with a Harbor Breeze Cruises whale-watching tour. No matter how you choose to explore, San Pedro provides a fun and flexible way to experience it all.

HOW ARTS UNITED SAN PEDRO IS INVESTING IN LOCAL ARTISTS AND TRANSFORMING THE TOWN’S PUBLIC SPACES IN THE PROCESS BY LINDA GRIMES

A drab utility box becomes a canvas. A storm drain transforms into a work of art. A new mural appears on a once-bare wall. If you haven't noticed, San Pedro’s public spaces have gotten a bit more colorful. San Pedro has drawn artists of every discipline for decades—painters, sculptors, musicians, skateboarders—a port town that’s always been an affordable refuge for creatives. For a small place, it has an outsized arts scene: its own ballet company, a cultural center at Angels Gate, downtown galleries that open each month for the First Thursday ArtWalk, live music venues, a makers marketplace at CRAFTED, and dozens of murals and painted utility boxes scattered across town. Arts United San Pedro, an umbrella group of local arts organizations, wants to keep that community thriving as the town undergoes major redevelopment. Its mission is to unite the efforts promoting San Pedro’s cultures, galleries, venues, and artists— and bring them into wider public view. Behind the scenes, the group has been doing a lot more—about $671,000 more. That’s what it’s distributing to local artists over three years, funded by a 2023 state grant that members Amy Eriksen (Angels Gate Cultural Center), Liz Johnson (Grand Vision Foundation), Elise Swanson (San Pedro Chamber of Commerce), and others secured. “For years, we've been saying San Pedro is the best-kept secret,” says member Caroline Brady, executive director of Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, who helped author the proposal. “There’s nothing like $671,000 to help unlock that secret and spread the word as far as you possibly can.” The money was a long time coming. The effort predates Arts United, beginning when a few locals banded together to win San Pedro’s designation as one of the state’s 14 cultural districts, arguing that a community of more than 100 artists, with roots in the 1940s, was a natural fit. The state agreed. An initial grant followed, and in 2017 the group formed the San Pedro Arts and Cultural District Coalition to route funds directly to artists; Arts United San Pedro followed in 2023 to manage its growth. The group has already awarded thousands. The San Pedro City Ballet received $15,000 for a mural on its building, unveiled in October 2025 and painted by local artist EL MAC. It honors Misty Copeland, who studied at the school before becoming the first African-American woman promoted to principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre. www.sanpedrochamber.com

“She embodies what it means to work hard and fight for a chance to follow your passion,” says founder Cindy Bradley. “Misty was such a shy little girl until she found her talent. It’s a prime example of what the arts can do for a child.” The San Pedro Skatepark Association was another recipient. A skatepark might seem an odd fit for an arts grant, but volunteer April Jones makes the case: “Skateboarding is a purely physical [art form], with every person developing their own style.” Arts United agreed, awarding the group and Calimucho Screen Printing $4,250 for an Earth Day event at the iconic Channel Street Skatepark, featuring a screen-printing station, a live band, and succulent planting. “Kids who might not come from healthy situations need a level of independence to find their own way,” Jones says, “and skateboarding helps.” Other grants went to Feed and Be Fed Farm ($3,700 for an arts station at its Earth Day Eco Fair), Freedom4U ($1,900 for music classes at Point Fermin Elementary), and artist Laurie Steelink ($10,000 for a multimedia project honoring local Indigenous people at her gallery, Cornelius Projects). The range of awardees reflects Arts United’s philosophy: it isn’t too picky about who qualifies, as long as the money goes toward art. There are a few rules — recipients must work or live in the Harbor

Area and LA County's Council District 15, and their projects must take place within the San Pedro Arts and Cultural District, which spans the waterfront, the historic downtown core, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and Angels Gate. “It’s a big grant,” says chair Amy Eriksen, executive director of Angels Gate, “and we wanted to get the money directly to local artists.” The broad approach is deliberate. Rising operational costs have squeezed small arts nonprofits, and Los Angeles's cost of living has squeezed the artists themselves—many can now afford to make work only when it’s been pre-commissioned, forced to choose between necessities and their craft. “You have a vision,” says Brady, describing the crunch, “but how are you going to pay your bills?” Arts United sees the grant as one step. It plans to keep seeking funding while working on longer-term ways to keep San Pedro affordable for its 100-plus resident artists and organizations—and to sustain the creative life that has drawn artists here for generations. “San Pedro has been a haven for artists, and I understand why people came here generations ago and never left,” says Brady. “Every day we have artists interpreting San Pedro and feeding it back to us, we're all better off for it.”

Cabrillo Beach has two beaches – one outside the breakwater with ocean surf, and the other within the harbor, a protected bay perfect for families with children. This 64-acre complex with sweeping coastal views and grassy fields is the coastal highpoint of San Pedro. You will recognize the basketball courts from many television commercials and movies. An extensive $7.1 million restoration completed in 2017 brought this public pool with ocean views back to life with a nod to its World War II history. Once called the Gaffey Street Pool, "Hey Rookie "refers to a play written and produced by soldiers stationed at Fort MacArthur. Their production raised $250,000, which was used to build the pool for its original opening in 1943. 32

Numerous day camps, preschool, afterschool, and teen programs are integral to Peck Park programming. A 7,600 square-foot outdoor skateboard park lies between the picnic area and Western Ave.
