WELCOME
HERMOSA MEANS
“BEAUTIFUL”
Founded in 1906, the city of Hermosa Beach is located on the Pacific Ocean, five miles south of Los Angeles International Airport and just 18 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
Even with its proximity to Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach remains a quaint and beautiful beachside community, just over one square mile in size, with a population of more than 19,000.
With great weather year-round and the beautiful sandy beaches on the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop, Hermosa Beach is the perfect place to enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities including surfing, paddle boarding and beach volleyball.
In the last 20 years, Hermosa Beach has undergone extensive renovation and beautification projects that have transformed the landscape of the city, making Hermosa Beach even more deserving of its name.
The renovation of Pier Plaza near the Pacific Ocean was completed in 1997, beautifying the plaza and closing the area to street traffic to create a popular center for bars, restaurants and unique shops.
Hermosa Beach also completed a $4.3 million project in 2010 that revamped upper Pier Avenue by adding trees, a landscaped median, wider sidewalks, new lighting and crosswalks to make the area even more beautiful and visitor-friendly.
In late 2018, the City, in partnership with Caltrans and EBS General Engineering, began a pavement resurfacing project on Hermosa Avenue. The project includes removing and re-constructing curb ramps to meet current ADA requirements, removing and replacing
selected portions of curbs and gutters as well as sidewalk, grinding existing asphalt street surface and resurfacing with new asphalt, installing new crosswalks, new bus shelters, benches and trash receptacles, and upgrading traffic signals.
In the center of the excitement is the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, which comprises more than 260 members from every segment of the business community. The HBCCVB prides itself on being a strong and solid base of information and education for the city, its residents and tourists.
The Chamber hosts several community events in Hermosa Beach including the popular Fiesta Hermosa, the largest arts and crafts festival in Southern California, which takes place each year throughout Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The Chamber also hosts the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, downtown Sidewalk Festivals, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a New Year’s Eve Celebration at Pier Plaza and a weekly Farmers Market that features fresh fruits, vegetables and many other local offerings.
The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce is also proud to support local charities by annually contributing to groups working to improve our community.
Whether you’re looking for great shopping, dining, a beautiful hotel with a view of a picturesque sunset or a night on the town, Hermosa Beach has something for everyone.
Be sure to visit our website trulyhermosa.com for the most up-todate information on how to spend your perfect day in Hermosa Beach. For more information on Chamber activities, visit hbchamber.net.

HOURS IN HERMOSA BEACH 72
LIVE THE SOCAL LIFESTYLE FOR THREE DAYS
Southern California is known for sunny weather, beautiful beaches, great waves, and a relaxed atmosphere that equals cool. All of these and the best of these can be found in the South Bay’s quaint and unique (or as some say … funky) Hermosa Beach. This historical coastal city is just 1.4 square miles with less than 20,000 residents. Hermosa is a mecca for tourists, volleyball players and outdoor lovers from around the world. Each street screams Southern California lifestyle and in three days, experience the best of the best which can be found just 15 minutes south of LAX, a 20-45-minute drive to most Los Angeles attractions, and yet a world away in look, style and attitude.
Coastal waves, the best volleyball players in the world (who love Hermosa’s soft sand) and The Strand are iconic features in this relaxed, outdoor environment. The Strand extents south to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and north to Santa Monica. Each mile in Hermosa Beach is breathtaking, fascinating and perfect for people watching. Make your next 72-hours memorable in Hermosa Beach.
DAY ONE
Volleyball, Surfing, Biking & Refreshing Drinks With A View
Arriving by car, Uber, taxi, or bike, visitors flock to Hermosa Beach all months of the year and extensively in summer. The sandy beaches are host to volleyball tournaments of all levels, Juniors to AVP (Association of Professional Volleyball) almost every summer weekend. Hermosa is the beach for the best action with many professional players on the courts from morning to night.
While on the beach, catch some waves, play in the ocean and watch the local surfers or join them. The locals know where and when the waves will break. The beach also has easy access to calm waters and is perfect for swimming, building sand castles, soaking up the rays and again, just relaxing. Bring snacks or a lunch or walk to one of the countless nearby restaurants for an afternoon treat. Burgers, tacos, fresh salads, fish and chips, ahi bowls and smoothies are just a few of the choices all right by the beach.
Once back, relax with a cool one, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, at several well-known beach cafes and bars with outdoor seating and a perfect view to see the giant sun dip into the ocean for the evening. Once it disappears, complete the day with a burger or sandwich in one of the local taverns or even splurge at the cookie shop or one of the ice cream specialty stores. Day one is now over. Rest and relax so Day 2 can begin.
In the afternoon, rent a bike from the city’s famous Hermosa Cyclery which offers everything from bikes for kids, beach cruisers, road bikes, tandems, and hybrids. This four-decade old shop is a main attraction for many and also has bikes to purchase. Plus, it offers free air for tires for all and gear, maps, and special routes.
Be immersed into the unique culture of this historic coastal town, Stay in iconic hotels from budget to luxury. Continue the day with a morning walk on the Pier, jog in the sand, or run on The Strand to make your SoCal day. Or, count the many breeds of dogs that also stroll The Strand with their owners or walkers… it’s dog heaven in Hermosa.
A relaxing way to ease into the local’s norm is to stroll along The Strand to Martha’s 22nd Street Grill. It’s a place to see the residents – perfect for breakfast or lunch. Then ease back into downtown and make Day 2 perfect with local beachwear from a favorite retailer like Pier Surf Board House, Becker Surfboards and Spyder Surf Shops. Plus, you can get a reference on a great surf lesson for beginners to pros.
Nothing says welcome to L.A. like riding the sea, whether it’s on a boogie board, paddleboard or surfboard. People can also rent kayaks and personal watercrafts in neighboring Redondo Beach inside the marina. After hours on the water and playing along the shoreline, grab some lunch at one of the many restaurants in town.
Relax or shop in the afternoon to prep for a night on the town.
DAY TWO
Strolling
The Strand, Shopping & Dining
Start with drinks outdoors, like at Tower 12, Underground Pub & Grill, Hennessey’s Tavern, or Abigaile Restaurant & Alta House.
After cocktails, try restaurants with offerings from sushi, fresh fish, local favorite Chef Melba’s Bistro, or popular Zane’s, Laurel Tavern, Dia de Campo, The Rockefeller or Bottle Inn Hermosa. Choices are extensive and there is some type of SoCal food for everyone.
Life after dinner ranges from live music to comedy clubs. Pub hop to beach bars and the famous Lighthouse Café. This historic club was opened in 1949 as a place for showcasing jazz. Through its history it has hosted some of the best musicians of today, featuring live music nightly: choices range from a rock n’roll piano bar, jazz, and reggae Wednesdays. The Lighthouse was also heavily featured in the mega motion picture hit “La La Land”.
DAY THREE
Start with a coffee and breakfast from Java Man, Starbucks, Scotty’s on the Strand, Good Stuff Restaurant or The Source Café. All have the relaxed Hermosa vibe with patrons either on their way to work or another day at the beach.
History, Comedy and Entertainment
Galore
To find history of Hermosa Beach, visit the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, the local Hermosa Library with exhibits of all kinds, or the Surfer’s Walk of Fame on the Pier. From there, count your steps to the end of the Pier and take in the view stretching back to Hermosa’s famous Pier Avenue. Choose where you want to shop next. Local specialty stores offer home décor, clothing and gifts for toddlers to grandparents. A few locally owned favorites include Curious, Sol Baby, Deep Pocket Jean Company, Cultured Slice, Gum Tree Shop & Café and Uncorked for wine and gifts. Uncorked also features wine tastings every day and with such a vast selection, find something to carry home or let them ship it home for you.
Try Hermosa Beach Fish Shop at the top of Pier Avenue for a great fresh fish lunch you can customize. In the afternoon, walk south to Redondo or north to Manhattan Beach. Both offer a different perspective of the SoCal life and all are appealing. The walk promotes another dip in the ocean, a beer at The Deck on The Strand, or maybe a nap in your hotel room. Either way – relax, you are at the beach.
Plan to have dinner downtown. Palmilla Cocina Y Tequila made the “Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S.” list by Open Table. Or, Italian is always a favorite with many choices right in Hermosa: Fritto Misto, Paisano’s, Radici or Locale90 Neapolitan Pizza Market.
A third evening in Hermosa Beach offers more excitement with phenomenal entertainment. In addition to numerous clubs and bars, Saint Rocke on Pacific Coast Highway routinely brings in top bands with live music every night.
Another favorite experience is to see comedy in an intimate, still trending club, the treasured Comedy & Magic Club. Well-known comedians perform nightly, along with former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, who showcases his legendary stand-up skills most Sunday nights.
The Comedy & Magic Club is a staple in Hermosa Beach and a place where you often never know which stars will make a surprise appearance – all are funny and there are jokes and stories to take home.
Hermosa Beach truly has everything you need to enjoy life like a local Southern Californian for 72-hours and have memories to last a lifetime. Call the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau at 310.376.0951 for more information or visit hbchamber.net.

THE LITTLE GEM BY THE SEA
ONE OF THE TOP 10 BEACHES IN THE USA
As featured on the Travel Channel, Hermosa Beach is deservedly known as “one of the Top 10 Beaches” not just for its pristine shores, but also for its outdoor activities, festivals and nationally televised events, and as the home of the “largest arts and crafts show in Southern California.”
Hermosa Beach,
just 1.4 square miles in size, is 5 miles south of Los Angeles. The town’s mild weather patterns make it an ideal vacation spot all year. Temperatures range from highs of 77 degrees in the summer to a balmy 67 degrees in winter, with the nighttime temperatures rarely going below 50 degrees. A scenic beach along with a variety of shops and restaurants makes this seaside city a popular vacation destination for Californians and international visitors.
Daytime activities abound in this vacation haven. Hermosa Beach’s one-and-a-half-mile stretch of sand is the training ground for some of the world’s best pro-circuit volleyball players. Olympic gold medalists can be seen honing their skills at the net. It is also an ideal place for surfing enthusiasts, boogie boarders, stand-up paddleboarders, ocean swimmers and people wanting to fish from the pier. Those who wish for more relaxing pursuits build sand castles, enjoy the antics of pelicans and dolphins, sun themselves in the year-round breezes, and stake out a place to view each evening’s spectacular show as the sun drops into the Pacific.
Hermosa Beach is much more than sand and surf. This lively beach village offers up live music with choices from rock to blues to jazz. In August, the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series takes place on the beach for
the whole family to enjoy. You’ll also find culture in many flavors with art galleries, live theatre at the Hermosa Playhouse and the famous Comedy and Magic Club where Jay Leno performs Sunday nights and such famous names as Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Maher drop by regularly for an impromptu appearance.
There are many festivals and special events in Hermosa Beach too. Fiesta Hermosa attracts more than 100,000 visitors during both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. This street fair, which has been a tradition for
more than 45 years, features 300-plus crafters and artists, a Kiddie Carnival complete with a petting zoo and pony rides, a food court, the Charity Beer and Wine Garden and two
soundstages with live bands performing all day long. We also offer free bike valet parking on the beach south of the pier. In January, the Chamber also hosts a New Year’s Eve Gala with entertainment on Pier Plaza. In March, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade fills the streets with revelers and the whole town becomes “Irish” for the day. And fresh fruits and vegetables are available every Wednesday at the Chamber’s Farmers Market, where residents meet to buy fresh provisions and exchange the latest gossip.
Conveniently located 15 minutes south of Los Angeles International Airport, travelers can visit the star-studded streets of Hollywood, glamorous Beverly Hills or the theme parks of Anaheim and still get back to the beach in time to witness the magnificent sunset. It is easily accessible by car or taxi to all major Los Angeles business and leisure destinations.
Hermosa Beach, the little gem by the sea, is ideal for everyone. Whether you’re a couple, traveling solo or on a family vacation, Hermosa’s friendly atmosphere and special setting will make your getaway easy, fun and unforgettable.

PRESERVING THE CITY’S HISTORY: HERMOSA BEACH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Historical Society’s purpose is to preserve and chronicle the history of Hermosa Beach. Established in 1987, its offices and the museum are located in the Hermosa Beach Community Center, which is located at 710 Pier Ave. (the large building on the southwest corner of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway).
The mission of the Hermosa Beach Historical Society is to “acquire, preserve and interpret historical memorabilia and other materials pertaining to the history of the City of Hermosa Beach. This collection shall be extended to the public as a source of delight, illumination and lifelong learning.” The museum & society can be contacted by phone at 310.318.9421, or by email at hermosabeachmuseum@gmail.com.
SUSTAINABILITY
Hermosa Beach has clearly shown its commitment to the new sustainability movement, not just by joining it, but by taking a leadership role. This was sparked by a grassroots movement among local residents, which resulted in the creation of a two-year Green Task Force, implementation of award-winning stormwater infiltration projects on Pier Avenue and on the beach, the initiation of programs to create incentives for renewable energy projects and a reduction of pollution.

REAL ESTATE & COMMUNITY
Home to less than 20,000 residents,
Hermosa Beach runs 15 blocks from east to west and 40 blocks from north to south. Though only 1.4 square miles, it features an array of stunning properties along The Strand, homes with dazzling views in the hills and quaint bungalows in the Sand Section.
The city’s 9,000-plus single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums and multifamily units are all within easy reach of Hermosa’s unparalleled beaches, retail hubs and recreational options. With excellent schools and amenities galore, Hermosa Beach continues to maintain strong home values.
SAFE, SOUND AND SECURE: POLICE DEPARTMENT
The City of Hermosa Beach was incorporated in 1907, and the police department had a small and varied start with one employee first noted in city records as E.L. Ferriel, the city marshal, in 1908. Marshal Ferriel was elected to the position with a total of 88 votes.
The Hermosa Beach Police Department is currently authorized for 38 sworn personnel. The department has a police chief, one captain, two lieutenants, eight sergeants and 26 officers. HBPD has assignments in detectives, traffic, patrol, backgrounds and training, internal affairs, and the Community Lead Program. The department also has a K-9 program. Volunteer programs include a chaplain, Crisis Response Team and Volunteers in Policing.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Upon Hermosa Beach’s incorporation in 1907, the City Council created a volunteer fire chief position for the Hermosa Beach Fire Department. Clement L. “Bob” Reinbolt was appointed as the first fire chief and he in turn hired four volunteer firefighters. Their first fire engine was a horse drawn, two-wheeled cart that carried a small amount of hose, two axes and one bucket. As time passed, the small city became more populated with homes and small businesses, which increased the need for better fire protection.
Today, the fire and emergency medical services are provided to the city of Hermosa Beach by the County of Los Angeles Fire Department. There is one fire station with other surrounding Los Angeles County Fire Stations for support coverage. Daily the fire station has five on-duty uniform personnel, with a total of 15 fifteen personnel assigned. There are three shifts that rotate on a 24hour basis. Other personnel consists of one Assistant Fire Chief, which acts as the City’s Fire Chief, one emergency manager, one fire inspector and one administrative assistant. Currently, 14 out of 15 fire personnel have paramedic status.

Incorporated in 1992, the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation is a fundraising organization for Hermosa Beach public schools. Operated entirely by volunteers, its focus is to meet the school district’s educational needs by funding instructional programs in science, technology, foreign language and the arts. THE CHAMBER
MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG
Looking back more than 100 years to 1912, Hermosa Beach was indeed a very different place. The 1,500-acre tract of the Rancho Sausal Redondo – named Hermosa (“beautiful” in Spanish) when it was purchased just 12 years before – had evolved from a stretch of barren sand dunes to a small, tree-laden residential community of less than 1,000 people with a modest business district. The first businesses served by the new Chamber cropped up along Hermosa and Pier avenues and the town also featured a post office, a church and two schools.
Known primarily as a resort town, Hermosa and its business community continued to grow slowly throughout the next decade. By the 1920s, several banks had opened, along with restaurants and stores, a pier, and a private club that eventually became the site of the historic Biltmore Hotel, which no longer exists. The Chamber during this period moved its offices into an auditorium building at the land end of the new pier, next door to the county library.
According to a Daily Breeze article published in 1957 in honor of the City of Hermosa Beach’s 50th anniversary, the Chamber “was one of the most powerful influences in the growth of early Hermosa. Its members really took to heart the slogan: ‘What the real estate agents can’t do, the Chamber of Commerce can.’ And, to a limited degree, they did. The young civic organization did much to help spark the drive for a new city hall, a new pier and such things as better streets, lighting and sanitation. And its promotional work was largely responsible for bringing in a number of new residents to the area.”
Among Hermosa Beach’s pioneering businesses was its first bank – the First Bank of Hermosa on the northwest corner of Pier and Hermosa avenues. Organized by James Walker, it later became the First National Bank.
Mr. Otto Meyer opened the first grocery store and fish market. The first boarding and
rooming house sat in a frame building on Pier Avenue. Mrs. M. Darling operated it and also sold bread occasionally. John Kerwin bought the property and operated a bakery in the building during the summer months.
A bowling alley was the only amusement house operated in those early days. It was located in a long, one-story building on the corner of 11th Street and The Strand. It housed several activities during its time, as well as the tax collector’s office and the press rooms for the Hermosa Beach Review. A woman owned the first theater, built on a lot she purchased from Ben Brown. The structure later became a garage, located in back of the Barstow Building on 10th Place. In 1915, C.D. Barlow built a small brick building that he used as a motion picture theater. The Otto Meyer building also showed early motion pictures. The building had previously been used as the City Hall and later became the Bijou Theatre.
Ocean View School, now torn down, was the first school building erected in Hermosa Beach. It was located on top of a sand dune four blocks from the beach, and no walks or streets of any kind led to it when it was built. This school was constructed of wood, two stories high with a belfry. St. Cross Episcopal Church was the community’s first church building. Donations, subscriptions and entertainment provided the finances for the lumber and carpenter work.
While connected to the outside world via the Santa Fe Railway, the paving of the dirt trail known as El Camino Real on the east side of town brought a new generation of motorists into the area. In 1935, the road was widened and designated as Pacific State Highway – still a main artery into Hermosa Beach.
The business community struggled through the years of the Great Depression and an earthquake in the early 1930s damaged a number of structures in town. Still mainly viewed as a vacation spot, Hermosa finally
began attracting full-time residents by the late 1930s as industry in the immediate and surrounding areas flourished. Downtown became a bustling shopping district and the local population swelled to over 7,000 by the beginning of World War II. That number doubled in just over 10 years with the advent of the aircraft industry. Through the next few decades, Hermosa Beach cemented its reputation as a great place to raise a family, a prime shopping and dining destination, and a jewel in the crown of California beaches. Throughout Hermosa Beach’s various metamorphoses, the Chamber has been there every step of the way to guide its members and promote commerce in this wonderful and unique community.
