Delaware County was my childhood home and continues to be as a Springfield resident. I see possibilities to further the county’s brand and reputation in the coming months and year as the region is in an international spotlight. The Chamber is emphasizing opportunities to take advantage of Pope Francis coming to Philadelphia in September, as well as the 2016 Democratic National Convention. We recently held a Member Business Briefing on the World Meeting of Families, a once in a lifetime opportunity for our area businesses, with the projected economic impact of $417 million for both the conference and Pope’s visit. Activities for the week start with World Meeting of Families events on Sept. 22 through 25 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. Pope Francis is expected to arrive in Philadelphia the night of Sept. 25 and say mass to a throng of around 1.5 million to 2 million people on September 27. The Chamber is here to help our Delaware County businesses prepare to accommodate those traveling to our area for this auspicious occasion. The Travel, Tourism and Entertainment 2015 edition of Delaware County Regional News includes information about the upcoming Papal visit, and the many ways to enjoy our local businesses and tourist attractions throughout the summer. Our edition features content from the Brandywine Conference and Visitors Bureau, one of the many established organizations with which the Chamber works closely. The “live, work and play” tag line, coined by our CVB, is echoed by the Chamber’s passion for the community. We desire to confirm why it is the best place to live, work and play. We hope you will join us for the upcoming Summertime Orientation on July 14th, where we will present additional information about our role as collaborator and connector in the county. The Welcome Mat is Always Out in Delaware County DINING, ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE ABOUND FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ALIKE No other county in Pennsylvania can claim to be the place where William Penn first stepped ashore in America, the landing that launched the Commonwealth. In fact, Delaware County has bragging rights to being the oldest settled section of Pennsylvania, with the first court, school and government office. History abounds in Delaware County, as does great modern hospitality, dining, arts and entertainment, culture and sports. Delaware County Council works with several partners to ensure that people near and far look to “Delco” when they want to enjoy

an outing with friends, family, business associates or out-oftown guests. “In Delaware County, we are proud of our past, and energized about our future,” said Delaware County Council Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. “We have everything here. You can see paintings by the Wyeths in Chadds Ford, Broadway stars in musicals at the Media Theatre, dine on Asian cuisine in Upper Darby or catch pro soccer action at PPL Park on the Delaware.” Delaware County Council is pleased to partner with the Chamber of Commerce and the
Delaware County Conference and Visitors Center on many projects and campaigns to tout attractions from the scenic farmlands of Chadds Ford, to the tony Main Line, to the main streets of Media and Upper Darby. All eyes will be on Philadelphia and suburbs in September
Right now, Delaware County officials are working with planners from Philadelphia to prepare for the World Meeting of Families set for Sept. 22-27. This global event that includes a visit from Pope Francis will bring
more than a million people to Center City and the surrounding suburbs. County Council Chairman Civera is a member of the Government Outreach Committee for the World Meeting of Families. He is busy working with other officials to plan the security, accommodations, logistics and other aspects of this major event. “This is exciting for Philadelphia and for Delaware County,” Civera said. “It doesn’t matter what religion you are because the goal is to celebrate the critical role of family here and around the world.”

In May, Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Commerce Center announced a new marketing campaign called “The Edge.” The economic development initiative touts five major assets that set Delaware County apart as an excellent place to work, live and play. One of those five assets is quality of life. When it comes to attracting visitors, Delaware County is a community whose amenities entice exceptional people. Delaware County’s neighborhoods offer boundless options to satisfy a wide range of preferences. “Our county has thriving urban centers, peaceful suburbs, diverse housing options, exceptional schools, award-winning
healthcare, beautiful parks, historic landmarks and shopping galore,” said Chairman Civera. “Whether families are visiting relatives, attending a graduation at one of our universities, vacationing, touring the historic sites, or coming to the World Meeting of Families – Delaware County is the place to be.” People can enjoy an “Inside Outside” pop-up art display in Media, pick strawberries with their kids at Linvilla Orchards, take in a show at the Media Theatre, enjoy major league soccer at PPL Park, or attend a free music concert under the stars in Rose Tree Park. There truly is something fun and interesting to do for every age and taste.

Rose Tree Park is one of the county’s major parks that is the setting for many fairs, festivals and the summerlong, free concert series under the stars. 3 Delaware County Council recognized two Delaware County women who are instrumental in organizing the World Meeting of Families 2015 and Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States. Council presented resolutions to Donna Crilley Farrell, Executive Director of the World Meeting of Families, and Danielle L. McNichol, Director of Human Resources and In-House Counsel for the World Meeting of Families. The World Meeting of Families will be held in Philadelphia September 22-27 and is expected to draw more than a million people from 150 nations to our area and generate approximately $417 million for the Philadelphia region.
Delaware County has a great future thanks to a glorious history
The county’s history forms a strong foundation for the 21st century attractions that continue to make the county a vibrant, accessible, affordable place. In partnership with the Delaware County Heritage Commission, County Council on May 27 recognized twelve individuals and organizations dedicated to the preservation of history in Delaware County. 3 tory certainly attracts people to various landmarks from the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford to Governor Printz Park in Tinicum Township, the site of the first settlement in Pennsylvania. Looking forward to the World Meeting of Families, Chairman Civera noted that the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Pennsylvania, St. Thomas the Apostle, is located in Chester Heights.
St. Thomas and his Quaker and Anglican neighbors shared the vision of a “Holy Experiment” in religious tolerance back in the 1850s. That church still stands today as a significant connection with our past. In his book, “Setting the Table: the transforming power of hospitality in business,” Meyer serves up more than savvy business advice – he also shares an interesting personal story. Born in St. Louis to prominent and well-traveled parents, Meyer developed an appreciation for travel and good food from an early age. By age 27 he had minimal experience in the restaurant business when he opened the Union Square Café in Lower Manhattan. Through attentive service in a relaxed atmosphere, USC stood out and soon began to thrive. Meyer went on to open other successful restaurants, including Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, and The Modern, which is located in NYC’s Museum of Modern Art. The lessons and insights Meyer shares in this book are applicable to any type of business. “Hospitality is about making things happen for people instead of to them,” he says. The extra effort to make a guest feel special, whether by saving them their favorite table or sending a personalized note to apologize when something goes wrong, is essential. “In the end, what’s most meaningful is creating positive, uplifting outcomes for
BARLEY SALAD WITH OREGANO & ALMONDS 1 ¼ c. pearled barley 1 c. almond halves 3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1/3 c. extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic ½ tsp. finely grated lemon zest Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 c. packed fresh oregano leaves 4 oz. fresh mozzarella cheese (or your favorite cheese) 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. In a large saucepan of boiling salted water, cook the barley over high heat until tender, about 25 minutes. Drain the barley and rinse under cold water to cool thoroughly. Drain again, shaking out the excess water. 2. Meanwhile, spread the almonds in a pie plate and toast for 10 to 12 minutes, until golden and fragrant. Transfer to a cutting board and let cool. Coarsely chop the nuts. 3. In a large bowl, whisk the lemon juice with the olive oil, garlic, and lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper. Add the barley, oregano, and cheese and toss gently. Add the toasted almonds, toss again, and serve.

SALES TAX EXPANSION In March, Governor Tom Wolf gave his budget address proposing a raise in the sales tax from 6 percent to 6.6 percent. Not only will the sales tax increase, but it will also be expanding to other professional services. This expansion would include services such as child care, nursing homes, and legal services just to name a few. It has become a concern that with taxes being put on to these services that it would discourage people from using them all together, therefore bringing in less revenue than is expected. One could argue that the sales tax expansion would most harshly hurt the middle class, the same group of people who put Wolf

in office, in hopes of receiving help from him. This issue also greatly affects the southeastern part of the state. If the expansion is adopted it might encourage Pennsylvanians in this region to cross the border and indulge in tax free shopping in our neighboring state Delaware, therefore hurting Pennsylvania businesses. The sales tax expansion is not getting much support from either side of the aisle, so it will be somewhat of a miracle if the budget is passed on time. In other states where professional services have been taxed, the tax has been repelled very quickly. While the Governor’s intentions are good, this may not be the best way to help the already struggling middle class. 15
NEWS FROM THE WOMEN’S COMMISSION
Following the work completed by a task force examining the status of women and girls in the region, county council created the Delaware County Women’s Commission in 1985. The work done by the task force and the policy changes that ensued reinforced the idea that a more formal entity needed to be created to maintain the advocacy that had begun with the task force, as well as establish a more formal way to communicate the needs of women and girls in Delaware County. On June 4th, the Commission, along with the Friends of the Commission celebrated their 30th and 25th anniversaries respectively at the Springfield County Club. At this occasion, several women were honored including Jayne Garrison recipient of the Commission’s 30th Anniversary Pearl Award, Carol Goertzel, recipient of the Friend’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Amy Kothari recipient of the Friend’s Spirit Award. The Commission’s purpose is to serve as a catalyst for change by first studying the needs of women and girls and then providing recommendations to county council on public policy issues. The Commission’s mission is achieved by collaborating with coalitions, working groups and issue-specific professionals, hosting educational forums, publishing resource materials, mentoring young leaders, as well as taking the time to honor the women who have had a profound impact in our communities. On a micro level, the exchange of ideas, the interaction among all the people and the information shared through these actions, lead to a valuable experience for all who participate. On a macro level, the Commission labors to improve the quality of life within the county, for not only women and girls, but for those who depend on them as well. The Friends, created in 1990, serves as the Commission’s fundraising arm, while also hosting forums and events relative to the cause. Participants of the anniversary event included U.S. Congressman Pat Meehan, PA State Representative Tom Killion, PA Senator Tom McGarrigle as well as Marilyn Russell who served as the MC for the occasion.

way. Many families are taking advantage of the warmer temperatures to relax, explore and have fun outdoors. Here are some basic tips to ensure everyone’s safety under the sun and in the water:

Avoid overexposure to the sun Excess UV radiation can cause sunburn, eye damage, immune system suppression, and premature skin aging.
Avoid excess exposure by either staying out of the sun or by applying sunscreen. You can get sunburned even on a cloudy day. Reapply sunscreen after swimming or during extended periods of sun exposure.
Prevent heat-related illnesses Avoid vigorous exercise in very hot weather. Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke can happen to anyone who overworks on a hot day. Symptoms of heat stroke vary, but include dry, hot skin, high body temperature, confusion, lethargy, seizures, and problems with balance.
The elderly, who are especially vulnerable, should stay out of the sun, seek air conditioned areas, and stay well hydrated with cool fluids.
Beware of insect bites Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom. Use insect repellents containing DEET when needed to prevent insect bites. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and other illnesses. In the US, mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus, and in other areas can carry malaria and Dengue fever.

Take precautions in the water Drowning can occur in as little as six inches of water. Closely monitor children, don’t swim alone and never dive into unknown waters or swim in areas that are designated as off limits. Avoid alcohol when participating in water activities as most waterrelated accidents and deaths involve the use of alcohol.
Prevent grilling accidents As the weather warms up, we often bring our meals outside. Be sure to use safe grilling practices. BBQ grills should only be used outdoors in wellventilated areas. Inspect your grill for safety and never leave it unattended. By following these safety tips, you can prevent accidents and injuries, and avoid a trip to the emergency room. In the mid 1930s, before becoming war veterans, Danny Murtaugh and Micky Vernon were teammates on Chester’s American Legion baseball team.
MILITARY MEMORIES & TOGETHER AGAIN: Danny Murtaugh and Micky Vernon The Delaware County Historical Society Museum and Research Library is currently featuring the exhibit Military Memories and Together Again, Danny Murtaugh and Micky Vernon. A presentation of some of the DCHS artifacts from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the Korean Conflict with military portraits of Danny and Micky and a history of their careers in baseball. In the mid 1930s, Danny Murtaugh and Micky Vernon were teammates on Chester’s American Legion baseball team. In the late 1930s, they entered professional baseball, playing in the Eastern Shore league. In the early 1940s, they both reached their goal of becoming major league players, beginning careers that were interrupted by World War II. During the war they served in the United States Military – Danny in the Army and Mickey in the Navy. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, they were back playing major league baseball – Danny in the National League and Mickey in the American League. In 1960, they were both part of the National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates that defeated the New York Yankees to gain the World Championship – Danny as the manager and Mickey as a player/coach. Now, eighty years after first playing for that Chester American Legion team, they will be brought together again posthumously in the museum exhibit held in the Delaware County Historical Society Museum and Research Library located at 408 Avenue of the States in Chester, PA. It is free and open to the public April through October 2015.
