ailing from the South Carolina low country, the quintet Ranky Tanky performs the timeless music of the Gullah culture — from playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies — and updates it with gospel vocals, jazz trumpet, and an R&B rhythm section. Translated loosely as “Get Funky!” Ranky Tanky’s 2017 debut album quickly soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, I-Tunes, and Amazon Jazz Charts and garnered the band high profile interviews and a far-reaching tour. The group was profiled on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and they have recently played at Monterey Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues, Carnegie Hall Presents, and Lincoln Center Education. Their album is currently in the running for GRAMMY consideration. Each member of the quintet is an accomplished musician in their own right, and they have worked with such artists as Houston Person, Freddy Cole, Cyro Baptista, and René Marie. The band’s dynamic vocalist Quiana Parler rose to national prominence after her success on the 2003 season of American Idol. From there she toured and recorded alongside artists as diverse as Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Clay Aiken, Miranda Lambert, and David Foster. Beyond Idol, her performances have been

CREATIVE PROCESS:

Anita Allen-Farley Finds Heading Georgia Ensemble Theatre a Process of Personal Evolution By Holley Calmes

“I

think the biggest thing I’ve learned this year is that stressing over things that need not be stressed over is counterproductive in the most significant way possible. Sounds pretty fundamental, right? “ Anita Allen-Farley has had a year filled with what most people would consider major stress: the sudden death of her husband and GET founder Bob Farley in November, 2017; taking on Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s role as Producing Artistic Director; and developing a completely new 2018-2019 Season. After the shock of Bob’s passing, Anita found herself heading up one of the region’s most respected theatre companies with the help of Jim Donadio as Assistant Artistic Director. “We now share an office and are learning a new dance together,” she says. By March of 2018, a new season was announced. “I wanted to put a little of my own mark on the season, without swerving too far from programming that our audience had grown to love and expect. I wanted the season to be a little more female-centric, and I wanted to see more actors and artisans of color on and off our stage.” Offerings such as “9 To 5 – The Musical” and “I Loved, I Lost, I made Spaghetti” have reflected these goals. The rest of the season, in 2019, features “Moonlight and Magnolias”, “Driving Miss Daisy”, and “Bullets Over Broadway.” By planning and guiding the development of this season, Anita found herself on unfamiliar ground which is

Anita Allen-Farley

becoming increasingly friendlier. How has this year changed her? “Higher thinking on almost every level. Learning to delegate more. Listening to the younger staff members. Learning to delegate more. Time management. Learning to delegate more. Can you guess which one is the hardest? Accepting that ultimately the buck stops here has been a tricky balancing act.” Balancing with enthusiasm, however. “I’m really enjoying where my life is taking me,” she states. “It is amazing to face challenges that you never thought you’d face, but they stretch you and make you grow and develop, and become more ‘alive,’ just when you thought all of that was behind you. It’s so empowering to know that there is still so much ahead of me.” What would she want Bob to say to her when this season is done? “Well done, Honey, well done.”

Maria Callas Hologram Concert Highlights Georgia Tech’s New, Innovative Season

F

rom the spectacular return of Maria Callas to the stage — as a hologram — to a video game that is played and accompanied live, the Arts@Tech season opens in January with an innovative line-up of work presented in the completely renovated theater at the Ferst Center for the Arts. Since arriving at Georgia Tech’s Office of the Arts in 2014, Director Madison Cario has charted a new direction for professional arts programming. For the first time, the new season consists solely of work that brings together creativity at the intersection of art, science, engineering, and technology. “Audiences will experience a hologram concert with beloved opera singer Maria Callas, and another with a virtual pop star named Maya Kodes who sings and dances on stage with live dancers. The dance performance of Skid by Komanse Dance Theater features dancers wearing 3D printed costumes, and Fifth House Ensemble brings us the beautiful video game Journey, played live by gamers to music that changes with the gameplay,” Cario explains. “These experiences and more combine for a season carefully curated at the intersection of art and technology.” Also coming up in the season is Chicago cinematic shadow puppetry theatre group Manual Cinema with an innovative performance at the heart of cultural change in The End of TV. Manual Cinema combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and music to create immersive visual stories for stage and screen. Rounding out the spring is comedian and 4D juggler Mark Nizer with a fun take on technology that is great for all ages. The new season will be performed in a newly renovated Ferst Center theater that is more spacious for audiences and features new seats, lighting, carpeting, more accessible seating areas across the theater, and wireless upgrades. The work follows the renovation of the Ferst Center lobbies completed two years ago that created a lighter, more open environment for audiences and events. For information on all Arts@Tech performances see www.arts.gatech.edu.

A Joyful Collaboration: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and GloATL

Photos by Jeff Roffman

G

loATL has been creating powerful, award-winning social performances for nine years. Now, they’re collaborating again with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano for a one-night special, featuring the moving artists of glo, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and 100 young performers. The multidisciplinary, two-part program is a poetic use of the stage as a framing mechanism for communal reflection for the people of Atlanta. Part One is Maurice Ravel’s ballet Mother Goose, which was first created as a set of pieces for child pianists. In the wizard-like hands of Ravel, this orchestrated version shimmers, transporting you into the magical realms of the innocent and the fantastic. Part Two, entitled Jump, follows the long ballet tradition where one composer pays homage to their predecessor. Jump pays homage to former Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Composer-in-Residence Stephen Paulus. Fellow composer Robert Elhai, with permission of the Paulus family, has crafted a wholly new

work drawing on the entire catalog of Paulus’ music for inspiration. The music is presented through a re-imagined stage featuring poetry, contemporary dance, video projection, and classical and contemporary music, with a joyful chorus of 100 of Atlanta’s children. The performance includes elements of jazz improvisation, ballet, as well as hip-hop from Atlanta’s Soul Food Cypher fable of the princess and the frog. The piece unfolds as a succession of scenes: children playing games, sharing experiences and moving artists reenacting scenes from adult life. This project is a tribute to the real value of collaboration, deep listening and children’s optimism. Don’t miss this cultural symphony on March 2 in Atlanta Symphony Hall.

Based on a True Story, to the Big Stage DECEMBE When a group of miners in Northeast England hire a professor to teach Art Appreciation, they embark on one of the most unusual experiments in art history. As the pitmen become painters, suddenly avant-garde artists become their friends, their work hangs in prestigious collections, and they are celebrated in high society. Based on the true story of the Ashington Group of painters, this heartfelt play about character over class and talent over privilege challenges the way we look at art and reveals our universal desire for a richer, more colorful existence.
