2017: The Best Year Yet at GET

G

eorgia Ensemble Theatre will continue its 24th season with our theme of celebrating the strength and courage of women. We began with the criticallyacclaimed On The Verge Or The Geography of Yearning (which ran in November 2016), and next we move to Atlanta playwright Topher Payne’s hilarious new comedy, Greetings Friend Your Kind Assistance Is Required (Jan. 5-22, 2017), sponsored by the Hagan Family Foundation.

When retired schoolteacher Rhonda Charles opens an email in her spam folder with the subject line, “Greetings Friend your kind assistance is required,” the journey of a lifetime begins. With her best friend Marybeth in tow, Rhonda travels to the mysterious kingdom of Zardelgnia, facing down guerilla fighters and attempting to rescue the captured Crown Prince. Along the way, Rhonda and Marybeth encounter danger, unexpected romance, and a new sense of purpose — proving it’s never too late to find new adventure.

The third production on this theme, and GET’s fourth of five main stage plays this season, is the wonderful story Having Our Say, The Delany Sister’s First 100 Years.

103-year-old Sadie and 101-year-old Bessie Delany are preparing dinner in remembrance of their father’s birthday. While they cook, they recount a fascinating series of events

and anecdotes drawn from their rich family history and their careers as pioneering African American professional women. As descendants of slaves, they have seen their fair share of turbulent times, and yet they forge into the present, with a little daily yoga to help along the way. Made possible by GET sponsor the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, this production runs during the Roswell Roots Festival of 2017 in February and March.

And finally, GET finishes this historic season in April with the smash hit musical Million Dollar Quartet by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, and sponsored by the Malon D. Mimms Company and Synovus/Bank of North Georgia. It’s December 4, 1956. Early rock ‘n roll stars Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, along with newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis find themselves in the legendary Memphis recording studio, Sun Records. This musical, a co-production with Atlanta Lyric Theatre, based on the electrifying true story, finds these icons in the greatest jam session of all time, and now it will explode onto the GET stage.

Every Day Provides an “Ah Ha” Moment at Out Front Theatre Company

“T

heatre is a non-threatening way to talk about topics that some people might be uncomfortable with,” says Out Front Theatre’s Founder and Producing Artistic Director Paul Conroy. As the head of Atlanta’s new, foremost theatre representing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Queer, Intersex and Asexual community (LGBTQIA), “We just want to tell stories that people can connect with and talk about.”

“Every day offers a new and exciting spin on something I thought was old hat,” Conroy explains, that “ah ha moment” that all creative people treasure. “You can always learn something new and expand how you look at and work on things.”

Out Front Theatre’s mission is hoping to produce that “ah ha” moment in its audiences as well. “Optimistically, Out Front Theatre can be just the key to unlock the door of understanding for people.”

The company’s first offering, “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert,” assured an appeal to “a larger swath of people,” according to Conroy.

“When ‘Priscilla’ became available, and we would be the first company in Georgia to produce it, we knew we had to do it to make the biggest splash possible.”

The success of ‘Priscilla’ ensures an

interest in Out Front’s upcoming productions: “A Kid Like Jake” running February 9 through the 26, 2017 and “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told,” running April 27 through May 14, 2017.

Conroy came to Atlanta in 2009, eventually working as General Manager of the celebrated Serenbe Playhouse. The idea for Out Front Theatre was already in the forefront of his mind.

“I saw other cities around the country and the world that had LGBTQIA theatre companies that had been successful for years.

I wondered why we didn’t have something like that in Atlanta. I knew there was a market hungry for a theatre company that consistently told stories and spoke directly to the LGBTQIA community,” Conroy explains.

Conroy sees Out Front Theatre as being for the LGBTQIA community, but also an opportunity for the public at large.

“I want people to love every single show we produce,” he says. “But hopefully, we can spark a dialogue in Atlanta about issues that are relevant to so many people. We exist to do the best shows possible, but at the same time we just want to get people talking.”

Giving audiences the potential for “ah ha” moments of their own, one individual at a time.

SOUTHERN STORIES COME TO LIFE AT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE

T

he Alliance Theatre continues its 2016/17 season with a trio of Southern plays, each with its own unique historic distinction. Beginning January 18 (through Feb. 12) on the Alliance Stage is the county musical, Troubadour. In 1951 Nashville, country music legend Billy Mason is on the eve of retirement.

Can his soft-spoken son, Joe, step into the spotlight and carry on? When Joe joins forces with an unlikely pair — Inez, a budding singer/ songwriter, and Izzy, a rodeo tailor on a mission — a revolution is born and country music is changed forever. This feel-good romantic comedy by Atlanta’s Janece Shaffer with original music by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush is a world-premiere production not to be missed.

Up next on the Alliance’s Hertz Stage (Feb. 4 through 26) is the winner of the 2017 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, Too Heavy for Your Pocket. A beautifully written look at the personal cost and private struggles behind public events of the Civil Rights Movement, this awardwinning play speaks powerfully

Closing out the season on the Alliance Stage (Feb. 22 through March 12) is the world premiere play, The Temple Bombing. On October 12, 1958, a bundle of dynamite blew through the wall of Atlanta’s oldest synagogue. This theatricalization, in association with Tectonic Theatre Project of New York and The Temple, celebrates a city that came together in the face of hatred to live the lessons of the Civil Rights era — lessons that still resonate 58 years after that fateful day. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Serves Up a Season Full of Surprises

W

inter is finally here and it’s time to start planning for the year ahead!

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has a little something for everyone, including the return of Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams at Verizon Amphitheatre on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Last year, more than 5,000 Star Wars fans attended this incredible evening of music, making it the highest selling orchestral concert in the Orchestra’s history! Principal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski will lead this concert featuring the very best of John Williams’ legendary film scores, including pieces from Hook, Harry Potter and the Star Wars series, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On January 20, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will also perform the Music of David Bowie accompanied by a full rock band and led by singer, Tony Vincent. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s popular film series continues on January 27 and 28, with Raiders of the Lost Ark, the complete film accompanied by the Orchestra performing the score live.

January will also feature two weekends with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s brilliant Principal Guest Conductor, Donald

Runnicles. January 12 and 14, the Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, one of the composer’s most treasured works as performed by pianist Kirill Gerstein. The evening will also feature Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and a new work by composer Marc Neikrug. The following weekend (January 19 and 21) Maestro Runnicles will lead the Orchestra and Chorus in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 and Te Deum.

hen most people think of community choirs, they envision silver hair, vibrato, and church basement rehearsal halls. Atlanta Master Chorale takes a bit of a different tack on the concept. Now in its 33rd season, the group that started exactly how you might imagine has blossomed into a national award-winning, sell-out crowd-garnering powerhouse of a community choir.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. Eric Nelson, Atlanta Master Chorale now adds to its list of accolades and awards the honor of being a featured choir at the 2017 American Choral Directors Association National Conference. Selected from nearly 300 auditioning choirs as one of only 27 choirs nationwide to perform at the March conference, this is a chance for Atlanta Master Chorale to showcase some of the incredible music on offer in Atlanta to the thousands of choral directors from around the country who will be convened to celebrate all things choral music.

The conference theme, “A Life of Song,” will honor choral music’s enduring ability to have meaning in every stage of life. In addition to some of the chorale’s favorite music from recent concerts, the program for this national

spotlight concert will include a new commission by American Composer Shawn Kirchner, written specifically for Atlanta Master Chorale, and premiered at the convention.
