“S

urviving through 25 years has been a result of adapting to a changing world without compromising the integrity of who we are as an organization and as people,” explains Ballethnic’s co-founder Waverly Lucas. “We value simple things in life and believe in people over financial assets. Life itself will change you, but hopefully it makes you aware of the pitfalls and how to overcome them.”

Along with founding partner Nena Gilreath, Lucas has experienced their groundbreaking, African American based company enjoying accolades and acclaim world-wide.

Any pitfalls have been cast into the shadows by an overwhelming number of triumphs.

One of Atlanta’s most popular holiday events, Ballethnic’s Urban Nutcracker, has delighted audiences for almost a quarter of a century, and this year’s production promises to attract new audiences.

The company was offered the opportunity to perform their Urban Nutcracker in a different theatre. Lucas says, “This new location helps us to develop a new relationship with the Riverside EpiCenter and Bishop Dale Bronner and also strengthen our bond with Leslie Gordon of the Rialto Theater of Georgia State University.” It will also attract new attendees, growing their audience.

“Nena and I were brought together by

faith and fate,” he continues. “Even though the strength of Ballethnic is in our ability to see things differently, ultimately it is our ability to agree on the most important things that makes it work. I believe we both found our calling in Ballethnic Dance Company Inc. and we continue to embrace others who share our spirit and passion for this mission.”

Pride in their alumni’s accomplishments, providing a family oriented environment for young artists to flourish, and offering jobs and opportunities in the arts and other fields has brought satisfaction. Lucas adds, “We have attained national and some international recognition as well as solidifying our Metropolitan Atlanta base.”

Future projects could “catapult Ballethnic to another level.” The company is also exploring the possibility of working with international dancers who have expressed a desire to work with the company. Lucas just finished a project with Gwinnett’s Aurora Theatre which inspires dreams of future multidiscipline artistic adventures.

Whatever the future holds, Ballethnic’s roots in the Atlanta dance community run deep. Referring to their first triumph, Lucas reminds us, “As we see all of the Urban Nutcracker spin-offs and Disney’s The Lion King...remember The Leopard’s Tale was created first!”

Disgraced tells the story of Amir Kapoor, a successful lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his Muslim roots.

When Amir and his wife Emily, a white artist being courted by a Jewish curator, host a dinner party, friendly conversation quickly explodes into something far deeper and more dangerous. One of the most provocative conversation starters on religion and culture in American theater today, Disgraced examines an American identity far more complicated than any melting pot.

n January 2016, the Alliance Theatre will produce the regional premiere of Disgraced, the provocative Pulitzer Prize-winning play on religion and cultural identity in America by Ayad Ahktar.

Disgraced was included in The New York Times Best of 2014 list for theater and was described as “potent…terrific, turbulent, with fresh currents of dramatic electricity… superb.”

USA Today called it “entertaining and thoughtprovoking! It’s something rare and exciting: an honest, nuanced, funny look at religious and cultural identity in the post 9/11 age.”

Disgraced was also nominated for the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. The Alliance’s production will be directed by Artistic Director, Susan V. Booth.

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Greets 2016 with International Visitors, Classical Works, and a Host of Male Students

T

By Holley Calmes Runa’s performances in GBT’s “Cinderella” and “The Nutcracker” in the recent past.

Now he returns to Atlanta with his own young company.

2016 also brings in a new era for GBT’s school which is experiencing a growing number of young male students. There are currently 13 young men from the ages of 3 to 14.

Artistic Director Wade Walthall is a major reason the school has begun enlisting more guys. His commitment to the school acquiring its own stable of male dancers has been a major goal from the beginning. Another reason is the growing realization in the public perception that dance is highly athletic and a great physical outlet for all that male energy.

From only a couple of young men in GBT’s classes, suddenly there were boys wherever one looked!

“It is wonderful to see that parents of young men are seeing the value of dance training and encouraging their boys to attend Gwinnett Ballet Theatre,” says Mr. Walthall. “The program and enthusiasm is growing almost daily, it seems.”

The Spring of 2016 looks bright on many fronts.

GBT’s March 26th production in Duluth’s newly renamed Infinite Energy Theater will feature two works from the classical repertoire and plans a special visit from a group of international dancers.

“Pas de Quatre” and “Swan Lake Act 2” will be performed featuring the growing technical and artistic prowess of GBT’s female students.

Many of these dancers have been recently tagged by leading national companies and schools for inclusion and scholarships, such as Miami City Ballet, Ellison Ballet, and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.

Also on the program will be a guest appearance by Kayzer Ballet, a new company out of Portugal created and led by Ricardo Runa. A graduate of the National Ballet Conservatory of Portugal, Runa created his company two years ago.

Kayzer Ballet is located in Covilhã, Portugal, the first professional Junior Dance Company in that country. Members are all professional dancers that have recently graduated from prestigious schools in Russia, Japan, Italy, Czech Republic, and Spain.

Winners of Atlanta’s 2015 Suzi Awards Nominations in 29 Categories Honor 14 Professional Companies and 41 Productions

T

he Suzi Bass Awards, Inc. announced winners for the 2014-2015 Atlanta professional theatrical season at the 11th annual awards ceremony held at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center. Presenters included local favorite performers Denise Arribas, Tiffany Porter, Gina Rickicki, Clifton Guterman, Kevin Harry, Jeremiah Parker Hobbs, Chris Kayser, and Topher Payne.

There were five special awards announced at the ceremony. They and their recipients are: • The 2015 Gene Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award, given to Topher Payne for his play, Perfect Arrangement produced by Process Theatre, and performed at OnStage Theatre.

• The 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to the family of Jo Howarth Noonan, actor, artist and mentor, who passed away earlier this year; • The 2015 Callboard Award, which recognizes work by theatre professionals in production areas not included in the categories of the Suzi Performance Awards such as stage managers, technicians, front of house and patron staff, or others, voted upon exclusively by Suzi members.

It was awarded to Elisabeth Cooper, Lighting and Props Designer, nominated by Synchronicity Theatre; • The 2015 Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Season was awarded to Theatrical Outfit; • And finally, The 2015 Spirit of Suzi Award was awarded to Inverness Productions.
