Six historic Talladega Murals by renowned American artist Hale A. Woodruff will be presented in a new exhibition—“Rising Up: Hale Woodruff’s Murals at Talladega College”—on view at the High Museum of Art June 9 to Sept. 2, 2012.

Commissioned in 1938 to commemorate the 1867 founding of Talladega College and celebrate its success among the nation’s first allblack colleges, the murals have been continuously viewed in the lobby of Savery Library on campus. They are considered among Woodruff’s greatest achievements.

Starting in March 2011 the murals underwent conservation at the Atlanta Art Conservation Center under the auspices of the High. The process addressed the effects of aging on the works and unveiled some surprising discoveries about Woodruff’s creative process.

The exhibition also includes works spanning Woodruff’s early career, featuring examples of Woodruff’s other mural commissions and smaller-scale paintings he made while in Mexico, where he went in 1936 to study mural painting with Diego Rivera.

Hale Aspacio Woodruff (1900–1980) was born in Cairo, Ill. He studied art in Indianapolis and at Harvard University. Woodruff contributed to the development of African American art, not only as an artist, but also as a distinguished arts educator.

Woodruff’s first mural project was in collaboration with Wilmer Jennings in 1934. The four-panel mural, titled The Negro in Modern American Life: Agriculture and Rural Life; Literature, Music, and Art, was part of a public works project and a teaching project involving both Woodruff’s students and a local high school. In 1935, Woodruff worked on Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals for the Atlanta School of Social Work.

Between 1931 and 1946, Woodruff served as the first chair of the newly established art department of Atlanta University. During the summer of 1936, he studied mural painting in Mexico under the mentorship of Rivera. From 1946 to 1968, Woodruff taught art at New York University. During the mid-1960s Woodruff and fellow artist Romare Bearden were instrumental in starting the Spiral Group, a collaboration of African American artists working in New York.

The High and Talladega College recently announced dates and locations for 10 U.S. museums set to share the murals through 2015, including the Smithsonian and museums in New Orleans, Detroit and Birmingham.

GEORGIA SHAKESPEARE FILLS THE STAGE WITH COMEDY, PASSION, AND A FARTHINGALE OR TWO

eorgia Shakespeare is celebrating its breakout year with a summer of high energy comedic works and an autumn full of intrigue. The next few months will find the troupe’s actors singing and dancing as well as acting, and even dressing themselves in traditional Shakespearean garb. On the heels of this upbeat summer comes “Macbeth” in October, in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival.

Producing Artistic Director Richard Garner is well known for creating seasons of diverse works rooted in the Shakespearian tradition. But this year was especially important, a time of rebirth and stability after a significant fundraising effort lifted the company past its financial concerns.

“If this season can be celebrated for one particular reason, I think it will be for the high level of artistic work across the board,” states Garner. “I felt an obligation to be sure this season reminded our audience and our donors why Georgia Shakespeare is an important part of the cultural ecology of this community.”

“While this summer is filled with comedies, we’ve got some weight in the fall with ‘Macbeth,’” Garner says. “Two of the plays, ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ feature dynamic language use and lots of wit, so they fit well together in a season.”

Garner is directing “Much Ado,” and the production will be visually sumptuous.

“We’re setting this production in a kind of rare visual arena for us—the Elizabethan period,” Garner explains. “When I was talking with Sydney Roberts, our costume designer, we wanted to clothe the show in the lushness of Shakespeare’s era as a way of saying that this company is back from the brink in grand style. We sort of wanted to ‘out-Shakespeare’ ourselves on this one. The wonderful fun we’re having is combining that era with the physical setting in Sicily. While Elizabethan clothes are very restricting, we’re having a great time working out ways for them to be undone in the Sicilian heat. It’s a way of taking a very gorgeous timeframe for clothes and making it also a very sexy one.”

An added benefit of choosing “Much Ado” is Garner’s opinion that “with Beatrice and Benedick, Shakespeare gets his couples exactly right. I think these two are the most interesting couple he wrote for the stage, and I think the kind of verbal gymnastics they engage in is the kind of stuff our company does particularly well.”

Garner’s ambition for his audiences is specific. “I want our audiences to discover that Shakespeare isn’t a dusty old playwright who wrote dusty old lines. I want them to lose themselves in characters on stage and leave the theater feeling like they’ve just been on a journey that is as fresh and close as their own lives.”

Georgia Shakespeare’s upcoming productions will definitely take theatregoers on many different types of journeys, filled with beautiful language, finely tuned acting and well crafts productions; truly a break-though season for this esteemed company.

To close out the season, Serenbe Playhouse will bring a Regional World Premiere to Atlanta with the staging of Time Between Us. T

his August, the award-winning Center for Puppetry Arts presents the world premiere of The Tortoise, The Hare, and other Aesop’s Fables, adapted and directed Michael Haverty. This “theater for the very young” production features fun interaction for children and adults alike with five stories from Aesop’s timeless fables. Playing August 2 to September 9, this production, coupled with a specialized Create-APuppet Workshop, is perfect for ages 2 to 6.

“Theater for the very young” is a child-centered theatrical experience that invites our youngest audience members to engage in the world around them in new ways. It trusts that these children need and want to think, explore, question, learn, and expand. It celebrates the unique developmental process of preschoolers by applying creativity and learning to live performances in age-specific ways.

Center for Puppetry Arts’ Artistic Associate Michael Haverty and Artistic Director Jon Ludwig are very excited by this production’s focus on “theater for the very young.” “Based on our viewing and investigation of other groups performing for this age group, the key is creating work that doesn’t hinge too much on text or complicated plotlines,” stated Haverty.

He continued, “Children under the age of 6 respond much stronger to visual and sonic cues, bright colors, physical play, and interaction. The title ’theater for the very young’ is used internationally to denote theater created for this specific age group. The Tortoise, The Hare, and other Aesop’s Fables has been geared toward this age group, with very limited dialogue, visible performers, live music, bright colors, a constant ingenuity of style and mechanism, and as much interaction as we can create.”

The experience extends into the Center’s Create-A-Puppet Workshops, where puppet designs will be one that even the littlest hands can successfully build. Instruction sheets and the classroom activity will also take into account the developmental stages of the very young puppet builders.

tarting as a Shakespeare Club that sat around reading the plays aloud in the 1980’s, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company had humble beginnings. The group eventually brought on Jeff Watkins to put the plays up on their feet. Jeff lead a small group of actors

as they performed Shakespeare plays all over Atlanta: at The Roxy Theatre, Masquerade and finally, Manuel’s Tavern. It was at Manuel’s that ASC found its audience. The shows were selling out, packing the popular bar. Jeff began working on obtaining a permanent home for the company to grow.

The Shakespeare Tavern in Midtown was born in 1989.

Wanting to keep the same casual tavern environment, the theater (formerly a dialysis clinic, an automobile dealership and a horse-and-buggy repair shop) made full use of the building’s original brick-and-wood elements.

Instead of row-seating, volunteers made wooden tables and chairs. A small drink and food bar was installed (the food was cooked next door at a Peasant restaurant kitchen and carried over for every performance). The Atlanta Shakespeare Company performed in this space, in all its rustic glory, until 1999.

The Summer of ’99 saw big changes for the building when it was completely renovated: the roof was raised, a balcony was added and a full kitchen was installed. Expansion always continues at The Shakespeare Tavern: in 2006, the mediocre flat façade was changed into an incredible replica of the Globe Theatre.

The company was about to get bigger as well. In 2002, the Apprentice Company was instituted. This program brought the teachings and methods of Shakespeare & Co. in Massachusetts to new crops of Atlanta actors. The company laid the groundwork for becoming an Original Practice Playhouse: performing Shakespeare’s plays as he wrote them: finding cues and directions in his text, using handcrafted costumes, live sound and music and direct audience address. The Apprentice Company, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary, has provided a company of actors who know Shakespeare’s work backwards and forwards, allowing The Atlanta Shakespeare Company to become one of the most prolific theatre companies in America: performing 12-14 plays a year. In 2011, ASC became the first American company to complete Shakespeare’s entire canon.

25 Years of Cutting Edge Performances

tlanta’s cutting-edge Actor’s Express is proud to announce its 25th Anniversary Season. Just over a year after teetering on the edge, Actor’s Express finds itself in good stead after a solid 2011-12 season, a wealth of positive reviews, and a bastion of new patrons under its belt. T

he mission of Marist School is to form the mind, body, and spirit of its students, molding them into whole individuals. The arts are a fundamental tool in accomplishing that mission, offering students the opportunity to integrate learning through the aesthetic experience.

Fine arts exposure works in tandem with Marist’s mission, enriching students intellectually, spiritually, and technically—head, heart, and hand. It provides a place of support and encouragement for beginners as well as those who wish to pursue a degree or career in the fine arts.

These young people are enriched intellectually as they master the language of a medium, learn to articulate concepts, and develop a critical vocabulary for assessment.

Students are enriched spiritually as they develop character and cultivate a deeper understanding of different cultures through their study of art. They come to know through the heart how the sacred may be expressed through images, sounds, movements, and spaces.

Students also learn that a technical facility in the arts is often a pathway to life-long pursuits, advanced exploration of their craft, and the joy experienced through the process of creating.

“Aesthetic thinking offers a powerful model for learning how, in the new era of globalization, to synthesize various ideas and competing points of view,” said Dr. Michael Bieze, fine arts department chair.

“We have, therefore, an increasingly greater need to foster imaginative and creative thinking through the fine arts.”

Those who wish to study the arts at Marist can choose from more than 60 courses and 13 extracurricular activities. The fine arts department has nine faculty members that offer classes in band, choral music, drama, and the visual arts. In addition, the department stages four productions each year.

Marist’s dedication to the arts goes beyond what it offers to its students. The school also hosts community education classes in painting, photography, and art history through the Marist Evening Series each winter.

ONSTAGE ATLANTA — 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING AND ON THE MOVE (AGAIN)

W

hat do Callanwolde, the Undercroft at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 420 Courtland Street, Dad’s Garage Theater, 14th Street Playhouse and Suburban Plaza all have in common?

They are all former homes to OnStage Atlanta. With the announced coming of Walmart to Suburban Plaza, OnStage Atlanta has been notified that their lease will not be renewed. So, after 10 years of calling Suburban Plaza home, the Board of Directors and the Artistic Company of OSA are on the hunt for a new space to call home starting in calendar year 2013.

In 1972, OnStage Atlanta started out as Dekalb Little Theater; producing its first play Any Wednesday on the premises of Callanwolde. In early 1973 the fledgling theater moved to St. Luke’s Undercroft, produced The Lion in Winter and soon after became known as Onstage Atlanta. In 1981 they “moved” next door to their newly remodeled foreign car repair garage; opening with Godspell and staying in that space until 1997. St. Luke’s wanted to reclaim the 420 Courtland space for a soup kitchen thus making the theater homeless.

1997-2001 were the nomadic times for OSA—Dad’s Garage Theater and the 14th Street Playhouse became short lived temporary spaces to perform. In July 2002, after a year of negotiations and renovations OSA was able to have a grand re-opening “downstairs” at Suburban Plaza (bowling alley next-door and all) with Della’s Diner – Blue Plate Special by Atlanta’s very own Tom Edwards.

OSA produces a broad range of work, producing musicals, dramas, comedies, and new works. Some of the shows produced by OSA these past 10 years include Angels in America: Parts I & II ; Urinetown (twice); Victor/Victoria; M. Butterfly; Wit; Three Days of Rain; Proof and just recently closed Doubt.

OSA is the home of the Eighth Grade Class of the Waldorf School of Atlanta and former home for Galaxy Music Theatre. The Process Theatre Company is a resident company that calls OSA home, producing two shows each year as well as Co-Producing the hit Designing Women Live series.

The Meisner Technique emphasizes the importance of truthful acting on the stage and screen.

Sanford Meisner, who became well known for his long list of famous acting students, created a foundational exercise for actors called “repetition”. Meisner described it as, “an exercise for actors where there is no intellectuality. I wanted to eliminate all the ‘head’ work, and take away the manipulation and get to where the source of all organic creativity comes from, your impulses.”

Producing Artistic Director Grant McGowen teaches Meisner Acting Classes on Monday and Tuesday nights at Pinch ‘n’ Ouch Theatre in Atlanta.
