R
ecently transplanted from San Francisco, the National Black Arts Festival’s new Executive Director has had six months to be impressed by her new home. Grace Stanislaus also lived in New York City, so taking the helm of the prestigious event brings her to a very different new post. What does she think? “From the vantage point of a new transplant, my impression is that the city is vibrant, thriving and poised for more — poised to take it to the next level in many sectors such as business, technology, tourism and the arts,” she says. Stanislaus also finds herself in “a truly global city.” She believes that the NBAF’s legacy has had an impact on this description. Going into the job, her grasp of the event was shaped by friends and colleagues who shared NBAF stories, recent and past, about “days jammed with events and activities, making the decision about what to attend challenging.” The 2015 festival will focus on dance. “There’s a lot that excites me,” she says.“Perhaps it’s the broad menu of

tepping into the sweeping grounds of Serenbe often feels like an escape into a whole new world – an experience that is wonderfully aided by the team behind the Serenbe Playhouse. For five seasons now, the intrepid Playhouse has taken full advantage of the community’s diverse range of scenery and settings for its shows, leaving the confining seats of a traditional theatre to the wayside and exploring the world of theatre in the greatwide-open, using their natural surroundings to aide in their quest to fully immerse their audiences in the stories they perform. That avant-garde nature, combined with their commitment to working with some of Atlanta’s (and the nation’s) most heralded stage actors, choreographers, and crew, and the prodigious vision of Founder, and Executive/Artistic Director, Brian Clowdus, makes for an unparalleled experience, time after time. For its sixth season the Playhouse will be taking full advantage of Serenbe’s landscape all year round. With six full productions slated to take place throughout 2015, the Playhouse’s incomparable ambition is sure to leave audiences enthralled for the duration of the calendar year. To kick things off, Serenbe Playhouse will showcase the dizzied and unyielding pursuits of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, which will
be set in Serenbe’s own Labyrinth. From there, audiences will be led into the comingof-age tale of Mary Lennox, living in an English Estate with her estranged Uncle in The Secret Garden. We’ll then have the chance to watch Matthew Davis (The Vampire Diaries) and his cast mates take on the dark, gothic tale of A Streetcar Named Desire, before departing for the Argentinian countryside and the political climb of Eva Peron in Evita. And of course, before the calendar year is through, their trumpeted (and sold-out) shows of The Sleepy Hollow Experience and The Snow Queen will return to the proverbial center stage. With all of these shows, the Playhouse will explore the season’s overarching theme of transformation: a convict imagines his way to heroism, and takes his community with him; a stubborn, young orphan learns the true meaning of family, and becomes a young woman as a result; a bereaved widow succumbs to mental collapse; an aspiring Argentinian actress becomes one of the most heralded political icons of her century. These are yarns that could only be properly spun with the heart, ambition, and passion found at Serenbe Playhouse.

The Theatre for the Very Young season includes one remounted production and two world premieres developed for audiences 18 months old – 5 years old, including A Bucket of Blessings, a charming retelling of a classic Indian Folktale, by Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition winner, Madhuri Shekar. The main stage season finishes with the Pulitzer Prize winning drama, Disgraced, in April 2016. The Hertz Stage season will include the thrilling drama, A Steady Rain; a new holiday comedy by Dad’s Garage, Merry %#!*ing Christmas; the winner of the 2016 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, Start Down, by Eleanor Burgess; and the musical biography Ethel by Terry Burrell. The Alliance will also produce three exceptional productions for youth and families beginning in May 2015 with Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical based on the beloved book by Mo Willems. T
he Modern Atlanta Dance Festival (MAD), now in its 21st year, will feature two nights of exceptional dance at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s, home of Theatrical Outfit, plus two new events: 24 Hour Dance and the Pioneer of Atlanta Dance Gala. Created by Douglas Scott and Full Radius Dance to showcase the diversity and excellence of the local dance scene, the MAD Festival strives to present the best of Georgia’s modern/ contemporary dance, allowing audiences to experience a variety of choreographers, techniques and artistic visions in a single evening. Over the past two decades, Full Radius Dance has presented more than 65 companies and independent choreographers. Over 600 dancers have graced the festival stage. This year’s performances, offered on May 22 and May 23 at 8:00 pm, will feature works from both established companies and independent choreographers. • Staibdance performs an excerpt from artistic director George Staib’s acclaimed work “Attic”. • Southern Arc Dance presents “Tricot” set to the music of 21st century composer Goebbels. • In an excerpt from “The Oracle”, Daniel Gwirtzman Dance employs
intricate partnering to examine relationships. • Using a vocabulary reminiscent of childhood games, choreographer Natalie Eggert has created a duet that portrays the reciprocity of friendship in “I am Rubber, You are Glue.” • Sean Hilton, of Fly on the Wall collective, offers “The Other Side”, giving voice to the play between the physical and the felt. • Host company Full Radius Dance premieres “A Bee in Ink”, inspired by artist Monir Farmanfarmaian’s experiments with abstract expressionism. 24 Hour Dance is a competition of four to eight minute dance/movement theatre works choreographed, rehearsed, and performed all within one 24 hour period. 24 Hour Dance will take place at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery on May 16 & 17. The Pioneer of Atlanta Dance Gala was established to honor artists and educators who have made pivotal contributions to the field of dance here in the heart of Georgia. On Groundhog Day 2009, Lemley and a small group of producers launched the one-hour daily music, arts and culture program, City Café with John Lemley, which included interviews with people from all walks of metro-Atlanta life, along with a number of international celebrities, including Richard Chamberlain, Barry Manilow, Joan Rivers and the B-52’s Fred Schneider. Lemley has garnered a number of accolades and awards. In 2008, for his work as All Things Considered host, he was named “Best Drive-Time DJ” by the staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 2010, Atlanta Magazine picked Lemley and City Café as “Best of the Dial.” In 2012, Lemley received a GLAAD media award. Lemley regularly serves as a narrator and emcee for fundraisers and public performances benefitting area non-profits and service organizations. In 2013, John performed the role of “BBC Interviewer” in the critically acclaimed production End of the Rainbow at Atlanta-based theatre company, Actor’s Express. John lives in Decatur, GA with his partner, Mike Selk.

tlanta-based radio host and producer John Lemley has stepped down from his various roles at 90.1 WABE and has joined the team at Atlanta’s AM 1690 WMLB the Voice of the Arts as of February 2. City Café with John Lemley, a name and program format Lemley originated at WABE, has been added to AM 1690’s daily line-up of music programming. The name of the show was changed to John Lemley’s City Café and expanded to two hours, airing weekdays from noon to 2:00 p.m., becoming Atlanta’s only weekday classical radio program. The program features a playlist of classical and crossover music, with an emphasis on the world’s most beloved works and performances, including a weekly “Top of the Charts” program based on Billboard Classical album rankings, along with CBS News headlines, lifestyle stories and highlights from Atlanta’s cultural calendar. During his 18-year tenure at 90.1 WABE, John Lemley hosted numerous news and music programs, including Daytime, Aubade, Tapestry, The Stargazer’s Journal, Bach’s Lunch

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Displays Growth Towards a New Vision with its 20152016 Season of Performances By Holley Calmes, Photos by Richard Calmes

winnett Ballet Theatre’s 2015-2016 Season will feature ballet classics, contemporary fare and exciting guests from across the Atlantic. It is a season designed to display the 38 year old company’s technical and creative growth. Under the Artistic Direction of Wade Walthall, the company has evolved into an arts entity with increased technical standards as it also leads each youthful dancer to a deeper sense of individual artistry. The season will consist of Walthall’s “Cinderella” October 3-4; “The Nutcracker” from December 4-19 on weekends, and a spring offering that includes “Pas de Quatre,” “Swan Lake, Act 2,” and a special appearance/ collaboration with Portugal’s Kayser Youth Ballet Company. Walthall has exerted a steady, gentle influence since his arrival in 2012 to create a company more like Seattle’s “Evergreen City Ballet” which he created and led for 15 years. The emphasis is on a professional atmosphere and professional standards of dance tempered by the physical and emotional needs of young, developing bodies and personalities. Walthall says, “We believe GBT, through the quality of its young artists and the unique character of its productions, is steadily taking its place as one of the Atlanta area’s premier
dance organizations.” Board Chairman Emeritus Len Diprima adds, “GBT continues to evolve through good leadership and excellent instructors. Once an exceptional quality local dance school, the goal is to provide professional traditional and cutting edge dance education and choreographic performances to a large portion of metropolitan Atlanta.” The Portuguese connection comes from the Kayzer Ballet’s young founder and director, Ricardo Runa, GBT’s guest dancer last year. Kayzer Ballet is located in Covilhã, Portugal, the first professional Youth Dance Company in that country. Members are all professional dancers that have recently graduated from prestigious ballet institutions throughout Europe. Dancers hail from Russia, Japan, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Spain. As of now, the plan is to integrate Kayzer’s young professionals on the stage with GBT’s own aspiring professionals. GBT is located in a 22,000 square foot facility located at 1800 Macleod Drive in Lawrenceville, GA. Year round programs for ages 4 and up, including intensives and open classes, are offered. Atlanta Jazz Festival Presents: An Evening With Blue Note
T
he Atlanta Jazz Festival presents “An Evening with Blue Note” on Saturday, May 23 in Piedmont Park beginning at 5 pm. The evening will showcase the talents of some of the prestigious label’s rising artists. Saxophonist Marcus Strickland has an impressive list of recording and performing credits, having collaborated with Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell and Dave Douglas. While attending college, jazz master Roy Haynes asked Strickland to join his band. Strickland enthusiastically said yes, and held the tenor spot for five years. Strickland awards include Downbeat’s 2010 and 2012 Critic’s Poll Rising Star Award. His latest CDs,Triumph of the Heavy, Vol. 1 & 2, received praise from critics and audiences alike. He’ll be performing in Piedmont Park with his band, Twi-Life. Drummer Otis Brown III grew up listening to jazz, gospel, funk and soul. His father, a percussionist, played with James Brown and Al Green. His mother was a classically trained pianist. Brown played saxophone and drums before attending Delaware State as a Music Major. There he met jazz icon Donald Byrd who convinced him to go to New York. After studying at the Thelonious Monk Institute he became a member of Joe Lovano’s Us Five quintet, recording three albums, including the GRAMMY-nominated Bird Songs. Esperanza Spalding holds Us Five’s bass chair, and the camaraderie shared with Brown resulted in his joining her band and recording on her first album. Brown recently released his solo debut, The Thought of You, circling back to his early influences of jazz, soul and rock. Although bassist and composer Derrick Hodge has played with such jazz titans as pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter Terence Blanchard, as well as R&B stars Jill Scott and
Maxwell, the 33-year-old is probably best known for anchoring the Grammy award-winning Robert Glasper Experiment. His debut CD, Live Today, signals a new journey for Hodge as he embarks on a solo recording career. Similar to how Glasper concocts a distinctive mélange of modern jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, Live Today integrates those genres and more into something that’s potent and personal. Artistic Friends Opens May 1 at the Vason Gallery in Madison, GA

wo of Atlanta’s favorite performing artists, dancer and choreographer Lee Harper Vason and Christopher Rex, principal cello for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, are no strangers to artistic collaboration. Their latest creative partnership, however, will take place offstage, when they are joined by photographer Dinny Harper Addison and painter Shannon Candler for Artistic Friends, a fine arts painting and photography exhibit and sale May 1-June 13 at the Vason Building, 125 South Main Street, Madison, Ga. The opening reception will be Friday, May 1 from 3-6 p.m. Vason’s work will include acrylic and oil paintings of still lifes, landscapes, figures and abstracts. Rex will showcase a number of paintings depicting his worldwide travels, as well as watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings of musicians and travel scenes. Addison is a wellknown Atlanta photographer who will feature color photographs of nature and wildlife and scenes of Madison and Rutledge, Ga., as well as photos of dancers from her sister Lee Harper’s dance company. Shannon Candler’s paintings will include landscapes and still lifes created in watercolor, acrylic and oil. While the four artists have worked and exhibited with each other individually, this is the first time the four have come together for a combined Fine Arts Show. “I’ve known
Shannon Candler since we both studied with Atlanta artist Sidney Guberman in the 1990’s,” said Vason. “Christopher and I have been collaborators and friends all of the years he has been with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We’ve also worked together on the Madison Chamber Music Festival, which Chris directs, and we’ve done two previous art shows together. Dinny is my very talented sister, who is also a trained ballet dancer as well as a noted photographer of dance and wildlife.
