isa Moore, the Atlanta artist known for her abstract, mixed-media paintings of horses, rural scenes and representational figures, has created a series of ballerina paintings that is attracting attention and winning praise from collectors across the Southeast. Moore does not depict the dancers onstage. Instead, she portrays them at rest, still in costume, as if they are pausing backstage during a performance or collecting their thoughts before the curtain rises. “We tend to think of dancers as always in motion … leaping and turning in the spotlight,” says Moore. “But I prefer to paint them in contemplative poses, as if they are pausing in between physically demanding moments onstage. I hope the viewer will be drawn into the scene and reminded that no matter how active or Horse III by Lisa Moore

dramatic our lives might be, it’s important to pause, take a deep breath and refresh the body and mind.” The Northwest Georgia native’s work can be found in private homes and corporate collections, and her work is sold in galleries throughout the Southeast, including Taylor Kinzel Gallery in Roswell, High Country Art in Blue Ridge, Bennett Gallery in Nashville, Anne Neilson Fine Art in Charlotte and Robertson Gallery in Mobile. Moore also works with clients, interior decorators and commercial space planners on commissions. Moore is showcasing some of her recent ballerina paintings in a new show entitled “Women’s Work” at Bennett Gallery in Nashville through May featuring 12 female artists including Moore. Later this spring, her work will be on display at Anne Neilson Fine Art in Charlotte, and in the fall, she will participate in a one-woman show at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center’s Roush Gallery in Carrollton, Ga. “I am thrilled to see my work represented in shows and galleries throughout the Southeast,” said Moore. “As a professional artist, it’s gratifying to see my paintings appreciated by other art professionals and to have the opportunity to interact with fellow artists and collectors in a wide geographic range.” For more information about Lisa Moore and her works, visit her website, www.lmoorefineart. com, or www.facebook.com/lisamooreart.

Blocker said his patrons often tell him they are pleased they can ”hear every word of the show.” The larger stage has allowed the troupe to present original Broadway designs, including Robin Wagner’s for “The Producers” and last August and Ming Cho Lee’s national tour version for “Annie,” opening April 4. As evidence of audience satisfaction, Blocker said that, with subscription renewals just opened for 2014-15, some subscribers are adding multiple seat orders. Here is the 35th anniversary lineup, with descriptions provided by Atlanta Lyric Theatre (which was formed in 1980 as the Southeastern Savoyards): • Aug. 8-24: “Cats” • Oct. 24-Nov. 9: ”Chicago” • Feb. 13 – March 1, 2015: ”Catch Me If You Can” • April 10-26, 2015: ”Damn Yankees” • June 12-28, 2015: ”Barnum”

tlanta Lyric Theatre, the metro area’s only professional musical theater company, has announced a five-show lineup for the 2014-15 season, its 35th. The musicals it will mount at the Cobb Civic Center’s Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in Marietta are “Cats,” “Chicago,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Damn Yankees” and “Barnum.” “Catch Me,” based on the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, will be a regional premiere. The 2014-15 season will be the Lyric’s second in the 600-seat Anderson Theatre after five years at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre, where capacity was roughly 100 less. Cobb Civic Center is less than two miles from the Marietta Square, home to the historic Strand. Artistic director and general manager Brandt Blocker told the AJC that the move, made after extended negotiations with the Strand stalled, has been a “blessing” for the troupe. “We are often playing to capacity crowds,” Blocker said. “Audiences have commented how much better the seating is, how much easier the parking is, how impressed they are with the larger stage and orchestra pit and, most notably, audiences are overwhelmingly thrilled with the acoustics and sound design.”

Season subscriptions for non-subscribers will go on sale May 1 via 404-377-9948, www.atlantalyrictheatre.com. 8

Showguide Profile:

Ajile — Dancing her own Tradition, Mojah!

T

errie “Ajile” Axam began dancing at the age of three and like so many little girls, she trained in ballet, tap, and jazz. Even at this point whenever she would hear the African drums she would feel a burning sensation deep inside her soul. Not understanding the significance of her feelings, Ajile became a majorette in the school band as she continued her dance training. Alfred Lazepko was teaching at Columbia University. He introduced Ajile to her first traditional African dance, Gahu. She continued her studies in African Dance under Chuck Davis, Oginga Love and in West Africa. Ajile also studied at Dance Theatre of Harlem, Alvin Ailey on a scholarship, Douglas College Dance Department at Rutgers University and New York University. Returning to Atlanta, Ajile became a member of the Carl Ratcliff Dance Theatre based in Horton Technique. She studied with James Truitt and Marjorie Perces in Horton Technique as well. Ajile’s highlights include meeting Alex Hayley at Barnard College. He spoke about his research on African Roots. Ajile was inspired and sang “Coming Home” for the opening of his presentation. The second force in her life was meeting dancer/ choreographer, Rod Rodgers, who saw Ajile’s work entitled “Grandma’s Hands” and labeled it Modern African. That led her to take leaps and bounds through the criticism of her Mojah not

being real African and not being Modern. No it wasn’t. Mojah was both a fusion of Modern and African dance started in the 1970’s when it wasn’t popular but it was authentically an African American Woman dancing her own tradition. The epitome of Ajile’s inspiration was her studies under Katherine Dunham. The Dunham technique, like the Mojah technique, is a classical form for African-related dance. Ajile warmly invites you to experience the Mojah technique.

Stunning New Voices on the Horizon Horizon Theatre Company Turns 30 By Kelundra Smith

best at Horizon — outstanding contemporary plays and stunning new voices in American theatre,” Adler adds. “Plus a reboot of one of Horizon’s most popular shows ever, back with an all new cast of hot, young talent.” In July, old flames and rivalries heat up in the world premiere of Darren Cannady’s Right On. Director Tom Jones (every tongue confess, Sheddin’) takes the helm of this powerful, funny story about Black Power activists who return to the alma mater where they led protests in dashikis and afros. Closing the season is Pulitzer Prize Finalist Detroit by Lisa D’Amour, directed by Horizon’s co-artistic director Lisa Adler. Fire up the grill and expect fireworks when the mysterious, new neighbors are invited over for a barbecue in one of the New York Times’ top ten plays of 2012. Three and two play season subscriptions are on sale. For more information contact the Horizon Theatre Box Office at 404-584-7450, visit in person at 1083 Austin Avenue (Tues-Fri, Noon – 5 PM) or visit www.HorizonTheatre.com. “We’re still here after 30 years because our audiences love the Horizon experience,” Adler says. “Audiences and artists connect over fresh, new plays that make them laugh, cry and think.”

N

estled in the eclectic Inman Park neighborhood, Horizon Theatre Company is the place for professional, smart, entertaining and provocative contemporary theatre. Horizon brings fresh plays from around the country to Atlanta, and develops and premieres plays through its New South Play Festival. “Our plays build bridges across age, race, gender, politics, geography and class, helping us to connect to each other, our community and the world,” explains Lisa Adler, who co-founded the theatre with her husband Jeff in 1983. The 2014 season opened in March with Molly Smith Metzler’s Elemeno Pea — a chic and witty upstairs/downstairs comedy set on Martha’s Vineyard, with the rich and their wannabe “help” colliding on the social ladder. Kicking off summer is a remount of the fun-filled musical Cowgirls by Betsy Howie and Mary Murfitt. Beethoven meets Bluegrass when the Coghill Trio is mistaken for the Cowgirl Trio. Both are directed by longtime artistic associate Heidi Cline McKerley, who also directed Horizon’s Avenue Q (Suzi Award Winner). “This season is bursting with what we do 22

into the imagination. On May 30th a world premiere adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Rachel Teagle, and presented with original puppets from The Center of Puppetry Arts will touch the hearts of young and old alike. On June 12th, Tira Palmquist’s 10 Mile Lake will take up residence in Serenbe. This world premiere tells the story of father and daughter, and the joys and strains that they share. Wrapping up the summer will be the classic American musical, Oklahoma! Rodgers and Hammerstein’s masterpiece will begin July 24th.

From the moment the red velvet curtain rises on the Solid Gold Summer series at the historic Earl Smith Strand Theater in June, guests can expect an exciting season of beloved classic songs and high-energy dance unlike any other show in Atlanta. The Solid Gold Summer series spins three electrifying shows on rotation: let the Men of Motown soothe you with their soulful harmonies, hear the fierce ladies of Diva! roar, and reminisce with the Jukebox Giants of the ‘50s through the ‘80s. We promise you’ll be discoing and doo-wopping long after you leave the Marietta Square. Chris Coleman Returns to Atlanta to Direct Same Time Next Year

Chris joined Portland Center Stage as artistic director in May 2000. Before PCS, he was Artistic Director at Actor’s Express, a company he co-founded in the basement of an old church in 1988. We caught up with Chris about coming back to work in Atlanta: The last show I directed in Atlanta was Shaw’s Heartbreak House at the Alliance in 2000. I’ve only had a chance to be in Atlanta a few times since moving to Portland, so I’m thrilled to have an excuse to explore who the city has become over the past 14 years. And what a kick that my first excuse to return as a director is a chance work with Kenny and Phylicia. Kenny and I first met in 1989, when we were working together for the Atlanta Theater Coalition, and I can t wait to see if he can still learn his lines (Kidding). I think it’s going to be a thrill to see how this story comes to life with new resonance in the hands of these performers.
