THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER PUPPETRY DESIGNER

JON LUDWIG

n his 30 years at the Center for Puppetry Arts, Ludwig has written and directed more than 20 distinctive shows for the Center’s Family Series and the New Directions Series for teens and adults. Avanti da Vinci! The Secret Adventures of Leonardo da Vinci, which he co-wrote with Jason von Hinezmeyer, sold out its world premiere in the New Directions Series before traveling in 2004 to the Slovak Republic, where it became the first U.S. production to be performed at the Bábkarska Bystrica Puppetry Festival. Among his other adult works, Safe as Milk has been performed throughout the U. S. and was staged in 1994 at P.S. 122 in New York as part of the Jim Henson Foundation’s International Festival of Puppet Theater. Safe as Milk, as well as Heaven-Hell Tour and Kwaidan (with Mitsuru Ishii and Ping Chong) received UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry, considered to be the Oscars of the puppetry world. His family shows The Plant Doctors, American Tall Tales and Duke Ellington’s Cat also were awarded the UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence. Ludwig’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, commissioned and produced for the 1996 Olympic Arts Festival, received national and international acclaim and was heralded as one of the highlights of the Festival by art critics including Newsweek magazine and the Boston Globe. He has been a featured guest artist at the National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, where he workshopped Home, an original production. Kwaidan premiered in Atlanta in 1998. Kwaidan then toured to the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Dartmouth College and Spoleto USA Festival ’99 as well as three cities in Japan, the Barbican Center in London, the New Victory Theater in NYC, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Ludwig has also collaborated with Canada’s Puppetmongers Powell, on the Pirate Widow Cheng, and Theater DRAK’s Petr Matasek from the Czech Republic, on Fire! Fire!, both which premiered at the Center for Puppetry Arts. As a performer, Ludwig was part of Theater DRAK’s Tower of Babel project in the Czech Republic and he puppeteered in Lee Breuer’s The Warrior Ant at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In children’s television, Ludwig wrote, designed and puppeteered the shadow puppet segments for the Disney Channel/Henson Production show Bear in the Big Blue House. He also puppeteered in the Disney Channel’s The Book of Pooh. In 2005, along with Mitchell Kriegman and Dean Gordon, Ludwig received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Director for the Book of Pooh episode The Great Honey Pot/Paging Piglet. 4

Initially, Ludwig garnered national attention for two productions commissioned by the Arts Festival of Atlanta: Cirque Pataphysique, based on the work of Alfred Jarry, in 1988, and Zeitgeist: Der Geist Der Stets Vennient (The Spirit of Our Times: The Spirit That Always Denies), a solo performance in 1990. Ludwig is a co-founder of XPT, the thriving Xperimental Puppetry Theater at the Center for Puppetry Arts. He has performed as part of the Center’s resident company in his own works and in numerous productions of the Center’s repertoire, including Theodora Skipitares’ Defenders of the Code, Bruce D. Schwartz’s Marie Antoinette Tonight, and many of Janie Geiser’s earlier productions. Ludwig also works with various Atlanta theatres and was most recently the puppet coach for Synchronicity Performance Group’s 2005 production of Paula Vogel’s Long Christmas Ride Home. He has also co-designed and constructed puppets for the California Shakespeare Festival’s Merry Wives of Windsor in 2006. Ludwig has taught puppetry workshops for theatres and organizations, including the New Dramatists in New York City, Emory University in Atlanta, and the University of Texas in Austin. He is a member of the Directors Guild of America and ASCAP.

MICHAEL O’NEAL SINGERS

F

ounder and Artistic Director of THE MICHAEL O’NEAL SINGERS, Michael O’Neal is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in choral music, with an established reputation as a conductor, tenor soloist and educator. A native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, he received the Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from Murray State University and the Doctor of Music Education degree from the University of Georgia. He has guided the MOS since its inception in 1989 with his vision for attaining the highest standards of choral excellence. He has conducted over 50 of the major choral/orchestral masterworks, and his choirs have performed at such places as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Westminster Abbey in London, and the Haydn Festival in Austria. Dr. O’Neal has appeared as guest conductor and clinician throughout the eastern United States and was conductor of World Choir ’94 which was featured on a national broadcast of CBS Sunday Morning. In May 2000, Dr. O’Neal made his Carnegie Hall debut, directing a choir comprised of 150 singers from The Michael O’Neal Singers and the Roswell UMC Sanctuary Choir joined by professional soloists and orchestra for a performance of Schubert’s Mass in G. In July 2000, he conducted the Irish premiere of Mary McAuliffe’s Return to Old Ireland at Dublin’s National Concert Hall. His solo career has included opera and oratorio performances in Italy and Belgium and appearances on National Public Radio and the Armed Forces Radio Network. Dr. O’Neal performed on five occasions as a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Robert Shaw and was a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in France for two seasons. His work with Shaw evoked the following accolade: “Michael O’Neal possesses fine musicianship, a good sense of style, familiarity with good vocal and choral sound, and a personal integrity and devotion to music. Though personally talented, he always manages to see that the music comes first.” Dr. O’Neal has combined his life as a professional musician with that of an educator, and taught for nearly twenty years at North Georgia College and Mercer University Atlanta. His commitment to education is also integral to his approach to church music and he has worked at various churches throughout north Georgia during the past 26 years. He has held the position of Director of Worship Arts at the 6,500-member Roswell United Methodist Church since 1992. A member of the American Choral Directors Association as well as Chorus America, he is sought out as an adjudicator and clinician for choral festivals. In 2006, Dr. O’Neal was named a Lexus Leader of the Arts by Public Broadcasting Atlanta and was honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished Performing Artist CABY Award presented by the Roswell Cultural Arts Board. In July of 2008 he served as Artistic Director of the weeklong International Methodist Choral Festival in England. Also in summer of 2008 he led members of MOS in three performances at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy. In May of 2009 he will be Artistic Director for the Masterworks at Sea Choral Festival conducting the Mozart Requiem. For more information about Michael O’Neal and/or The Michael O’Neal Singers, call Cammie Stephens at 770.594.7974 or send an email to staff@mosingers.com. 8

ou’ll find them on stage and screen. These kids are living in the magic of the bright lights everyday as they follow their dreams as professional performers! All three are the most recent success stories from The Atlanta Workshop Players Children’s Theatre Company, where they performed and studied. These talented kids know that it takes hard work and dedication to their craft to find success. They have been inspired to seek out several of the dynamic theatre teachers and schools that Atlanta has to offer and now it’s paying off. What’s it like to be a kid starring on Broadway? Nia Imani says “New Nia Imani-age 10 York is great! I can get around on mass transit like a pro! My favorite part Young Nala in Disney’s THe LION KING of New York is the garment District. I have a passion for fashion. I had 4 weeks of rehearsal and an extremely hectic schedule. I pulled my thigh muscle during my first week and then, I stubbed my toe. It’s hard work learning to pounce like a lion! My first show was totally AWESOME!!!!! I was really nervous, but after seeing the smiling faces of the sold out audience, I knew there was nothing to worry about. All of the African music gives me a great sense of connection to my people. After every performance I get to sign autographs. I love signing autographs because that’s when you know you left them satisfied. I love working for Disney. The Lion King is the best musical ever.” These kids love the magic of show business but they also understand that it’s not easy. David Lambert says “I have to work hard, but it is still all worth it. I love what I do! It is a great and amazing opportunity to work for Disney.” David’s mother, Dori keeps him balanced. She explains “The support and love of a family is probably the most monumentally-important element to a child actor’s success and endurance in this industry. Focus on making smart, responsible choices as a parent, to have a well-balanced, happy child.” Ten year old Serena McGann has one of those stories you only see in the movies. They rarely ever happen. She enrolled in “Hollywood Bound”, David Lambert-age 15 a professional training course with The Atlanta Co-Starring in new Disney Workshop Players and was ‘discovered’ by Brenda Series, AArON STONe Pauley of Hot Shot Kids during the course’s agent’s night. She went to her first audition and landed a starring role. Serena’s eyes light up when she talks about her experiences on set and meeting dynamic people like Debbie Allen. “I am very excited to be cast as the lead in a new television series. I had so much fun filming the pilot. I can’t wait to experience the rest of the shoot. Thanks to AWP for making all of this Serena McGann-age 10 possible!” starring in new ION series With determination, hard work, talent, a dash of luck and that special MY PAreNTS, MY SISTer & Me something......dreams really do come true! ATLANTA LYRIC THEATRE

CHANGeS FOCUS AND DIreCTION FOr THe FUTUre

A

tlanta Lyric Theatre has been evolving in the metro area for 28 years, but new standards of professionalism achieved in 2007-08 under the bold guidance of Artistic Director Brandt Blocker, have performers, critics and patrons enthusiastic about the shape of things to come. Over 350 actors auditioned for roles with The Lyric last year, responding to Blocker’s openly engaging outreach into the local professional talent pool. Veteran performers and fresh, new voices were vying for roles as word spread through the acting community that something exciting was going on in what had previously been viewed as a “closed community” for musical talent. Change was in the air; excitement grew with each show’s vibrant choreography, colorful sets and costumes, and talented performers underscored by beautifully crafted orchestrations. These changes did not go unnoticed or unrewarded. For the first time since the inception of The Suzi Bass Awards for Professional Theatre, Atlanta’s version of The Tony Awards, Atlanta Lyric Theatre shows received 12 nominations for excellence. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on November 10, 2008. (www. suziawards.org) But mixed in with the excitement, Blocker observed something troubling. Patrons of The Lyric had two alternating venues for shows, and both had challenges that limited attendance. The Ferst Center at Georgia Tech was large, but so expensive they could only afford to rent it for three performances per show. Many seats remained empty because there was no opportunity for “word of mouth” referrals on subsequent weekends. The short run also made these beautifully produced shows unavailable for award consideration. The other option was a black box space created with a generous donation from Ken and Trish Byers, loyal supporters of The Lyric. The Byers Studio is an intimate space seating 120 people, but can’t allow for orchestration or the full sets of Broadway style musicals. Blocker challenged the Board to help find a suitable venue to overcome these obstacles and help towards financial stability and growth of the company. The Atlanta Lyric Theatre will present their 08-09 Season at The Strand Theatre on Marietta Square (144 N.Park Sq.). For more info www.atlantalyrictheatre.com or call 404-377-9948. 12

oin Center for Puppetry Arts as it celebrates an innovative 2008-09 season commemorating its 30th Anniversary! Since 1978, when Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog first cut the ribbon to open its doors, the Center has grown to become the largest non-profit organization dedicated to the art of puppetry in the United States. Last year, the Jim Henson family announced the Center as a possible destination for the definitive collection honoring their late father’s legacy. The Center is considering an extensive expansion and this wonderful new addition would be housed in a proposed Jim Henson Wing. While specific plans are still in the works, a new preview exhibit, Jim Henson: Wonders From His Workshop, features puppets from Labyrinth, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Sid the Science Kid, and more! The new wing and expanded global collection will enable the Center to become a truly international destination. Upon entry, patrons can tell the Center is a place of magic, wonder, and amazing importance. As the headquarters of UNIMA-USA, the American branch of Union Internationale de la Marionnette, the international puppetry organization, the Center takes its role of representing all forms and cultures of puppetry seriously. In fact, in October, the Center became the first organization in the world to launch a free, online puppetry museum! Educationally focused, the Center’s Distance Learning program uses two-way interactive videoconferencing technology to reach K-12 students across Georgia, as well as participants in 42 additional states and 3 foreign countries. This year alone, Distance Learning was named as a 2008 Microsoft Education Laureate Award nominee and received its third Teachers’ Choice Award- Best Content Provider/Fine Arts Museum. Witness the wonder by spending a day at the Center. Visitors can see a live theatrical puppet performance, build a souvenir in a Create-A-Puppet Workshop and tour the permanent global collection, Puppets: The Power of Wonder, and the Center’s newly opened special exhibit, Jim Henson: Wonders From His Workshop. Stop by today and experience the fun! For more information about Center for Puppetry Arts, visit them online at www.puppet.org or call 404-873-3391. They are located at 1404 Spring St. at 18th, Midtown Atlanta. 14

by Langston Hughes directed & choreographed by Patdro Harris music directed by JMichael December 20 – 31, 2008 Previews December 19 & 20, 2008 Rialto Center for the Performing Arts

This reinvention of the Christmas story is a soul-stirring musical celebration featuring a pre-professional, multi-cultural cast. A testament to the power of gospel music, the story of the Nativity is told through a combination of scripture, poetry, dance and song that connects a contemporary church revival to the time of mangers and swaddling clothes. This joyous evening brings the real meaning of faith and love to life.

See Brink Miller in his 13th year as Scrooge!

Come join us for one of these holiday classics.

A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts that reveal to him his wrongdoings and what will happen if he continues in his evil ways. This traditional holiday classic is filled with old English Christmas Carols guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit. The Best Christmas Carol Ever In this hilarious Christmas tale, a couple struggling to put on a church pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids, probably the most inventively awful kids in history. You won’t believe the mayhem and the fun, when the Herdmans collide with the Christmas story head-on. An American Classic! One of the best Christmas stories ever and certainly one of the funniest! This delightful comedy is adapted from the best selling book. A Chris Mess Carol Chris has the worst temper of any child you have ever seen. All Chris thinks about is “Chris”. She is selfish and spoiled and thinks nothing of having temper tantrums. On Christmas Eve she meets four mysterious strangers who help to change her life. 10743 Alpharetta Highway, Roswell, Georgia 30076 Call 770-594-1020 or visit us at www.kudzuplayhouse.org for shows and tickets.
