Atlanta Holiday Tradition Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ Returns to the Center for Puppetry Arts

T

he Center for Puppetry Arts’ annual stage production of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ has become a local Atlanta tradition. Each year, the Center’s talented puppeteers use rod, black light, and body puppets to bring Rudolph and all his friends from the classic 1964 stop-motion animated special to life on stage. Narrated by the delightful Sam the Snowman™, this celebrated holiday tale follows Rudolph and Hermey the Elf™, two misfits on the run. Along with their travelling companion Yukon Cornelius™, the unlikely friends set off on a merry adventure of acceptance and self-discovery all while Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster™ fearsomely hunts the trio. Audiences will visit fantastical locales such as Santa’s Workshop, The North Pole, and the extraordinary and enigmatic Island of Misfit Toys. Along their journey, patrons will enjoy live performances of all the classic songs they know and love from the original. Adapted for the stage by Jon Ludwig and directed by Tim Sweeney, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ is more than just a festive adventure story. Its universal themes of friendship, acceptance, and embracing the differences that make us each unique

are all just as important today as when the original special first aired. “Every person, no matter the age, can relate to this story; its comforting and unchanging message celebrates the misfit in all of us,” said Ludwig. The show features puppets faithfully designed by Resident Puppet Builder Jason Hines and crafted by the Center’s own team of accomplished puppet builders. Puppeteers Dolph Amick, Maggie Birgel, Nikolas Carleo, Brian Harrison, and Kristin Storla will bring the charming characters to life. This performance is a must-see for anyone with fond memories of watching the original holiday special or of singing the classic Johnny Marks song with friends and family. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ will run November 5 through December 29, 2019. Tickets are on sale now and start as low as $15. Tickets to the performance also include admission to the Center’s Worlds of Puppetry Museum and to the CreateA-Puppet Workshop™ where children can create a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ shadow puppet of their very own. Visit puppet.org for performance information and tickets.

Arts on a Different Scale at Oglethorpe University

S

tep through the gates on Peachtree onto our small, serene campus and discover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! At Oglethorpe, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences. Take a seat in our premier venue, the Conant Performing Arts Center, for student theatre productions and music performances, plus a line-up of professional guest performances throughout the year. The star of the fall arts season is Oglethorpe Theatre’s production of the rock musical Spring Awakening, onstage for two weekends in October. Just how good are our student actors? Three Oglethorpe students were cast in Alliance Theatre’s 2017-18 season opener, Shakespeare in Love, staged on Oglethorpe’s campus. And each fall, you can catch our theatre students in character at Oakland Cemetery’s popular Catch the Spirit Ghostly Tours. On Nov. 1, it’s your chance to see the Oglethorpe University Singers and Chorale, directed by Dr. Timothy Powell, in a free concert on the Conant stage. The group recently returned from China, where

they were one of only three U.S. groups invited to perform in the Xi’an International Choral Festival and on the Great Wall in Beijing. A decorated composer, Powell has premiered works at Carnegie Hall and was a semifinalist for the 2016 Grammy Music Educator Award. He will also lead the university’s second annual Georgia Choral Festival for high school students together with the Oglethorpe Singers, closing with a free concert (Oct. 29) open to all. Across campus, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art hosts a series of chamber concerts each year. Enjoy Harps Sounds of Atlanta (Nov. 3), while surrounded by Cézanne, Chagall, Matisse, and Renoir, featured in the fall exhibition “A Route Campagne: Impressionist Works from the Melamed Family”. Two of our newest acts, the Oglethorpe University Symphony Orchestra (Nov. 20) and the Jazzy Petrels (Nov. 21), will liven it up with their first concerts of the season onstage in Lupton Auditorium. Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale

C

elebrate Christmas with the Atlanta Master Chorale as we sing together the songs and carols of the season and experience the wonder and beauty of this festive time of year. Christmas connects past to present, sounds to memory, music to spirit. It unites us in shared expectancy. As part of our collective traditions, Christmas has become a natural cadence point for comforts of family and of memories old and new. It is a season of pausing and remembering, and of creating anew and reviving. We receive many greetings during this holiday season, but the message of hope, joy, peace and love, is always special to us at this festive time of year. The Chorale will be joined by the brilliant and celebrated actor and director, Tom Key, Artistic Director of Theatrical Outfit, as we weave these individual strands together in an experience of surprising, even jarring tapestries of delight and contentment. We will combine stories and reflections, our voices and spirits to weave that tapestry of exuberance and peace, which we cannot help but share with each other, and hopefully with you.

Music reminds us of what has been and of what might be. Music has become, whether on purpose or by accident, synonymous with the tradition of celebrating holidays and occasions of significance. We sing to celebrate. We sing to consecrate. We sing to believe. We sing to remember. Atlanta Master Chorale sings for all of these reasons, and we sing because we must. Join us once again as we journey to the hillside outside Bethlehem. Listen as the angels break in upon our world and “heaven and nature sing.” Ponder the coming of “joy to the world” and the promised hope of “peace on earth.” We invite you to come. Bring your families, bring your friends; Celebrate together the “dawn of redeeming grace.” Sing together the songs of the Christmas season. Three concerts will be held on the evenings of Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th, and the afternoon of Sunday, December 15th. Two despicable stepsisters, a narcissistic buffoon, and some high-speed vocal acrobatics spell hilarity for Rossini’s take on a beloved fairytale. In La Cenerentola, the good-hearted Cinderella casts off the helpless damsel-indistress persona to hold the original Mean Girls at bay. She’s not afraid to pursue her beloved (who she thinks is the Prince’s valet), only she’s finding that nothing at the royal palace is what it seems to be. Suitable for ages 8 and up, and performed in Italian with English subtitles. atlantaopera.org

The holiday sequel to the ART Station Southern hit, GRITS: Girls Raised in the South, centers on hilarious tales of holiday soirées and endearing family dysfunction. Four ladies from four different backgrounds cope with their southern Christmas celebrations. It’s a little bit funny, a bit touching, and somewhat ridiculous, but all in the flavor of the South. The play is guaranteed to get everyone in the holiday spirit, Directed and choreographed by Karen Beyer. artstation.org

Experience the Power of Inspired Art by Shen Yun

City Springs Theatre Company Promises a Spectacular 2019-2020 Season

Shen Yun transports you to a bygone world of unrivaled beauty and inspiration. Where philosophers and poets alike sought harmony with the Dao, or “Way,” of the universe. Where maidens danced with ethereal grace and generals fought with explosive athleticism. Where timeless tales of valor and virtue were born. Where heaven and earth intersected. And even magic was possible. Traditional Chinese culture — with its profoundly optimistic worldview and deep spiritual roots — was displaced by communism in China. Today, only the New York-based Shen Yun is keeping this precious heritage alive on stage. Take a break from the mundane and experience the power of inspired art. shenyun.com
