AN UPDATE

Atlanta based photographer Richard Calmes spent the past year taking images of dancers in interesting and unexpected places. Though he is a master of the studio and of lighting in particular, Richard found himself in the great outdoors numerous times recently. He put young ballerinas on the backs of horses. He created an oceanic pas de deux in the surf at Folly Beach, South Carolina. Dancers leapt across the monuments of Washington D.C. and jumped out of taxis in the heart of Atlanta.

“I enjoy putting dancers in different environments,” he explains. “The visual synergy between the beauty of the dancers and the beauty of nature can be startling. On the other hand, dancers and man-made backgrounds such as architecture or city street life can produce astounding visual energy.”

A shoot in the middle of Atlanta some months ago was an excellent urban arts adventure. Seven dancers accompanied Richard for shots utilizing whatever was available and looked promising. The results were as full of life as the city itself.

“Atlanta lends itself to dance photography so well,” Richard says. “We have some great dancers in this city, and when you put them in excellent architectural settings, the results can be fantastic. We shot Peachtree Street as well as architectural backdrops. But everyone had the most fun when we took over a taxi near Georgia State University. The driver was happy. He got a kiss!”

“Practice makes perfect. I challenge myself to get better with every shoot. At the same time, I challenge the dancers. We take a journey together,” Richard states.

Recent shoots also took him to rural settings in North Georgia and Tennessee. San Antonio provided a change of scenery at Regional Dance America’s Southwestern Regional Festival. Dance teachers from all across the country were caught on camera at Dance Studio Life Magazine’s Orlando convention.

Richard has also had four magazine covers published this year, as well as his book, “Dance Magic.”

Studio sessions abounded too, but it’s that lure of the unexpected that gives him an artistic thrill. Dancers will indubitably be jumping out of unusual places for him again soon. BRIAN CLOWDUS—CREATING IN SERENBE

B

eautiful and bucolic Serenbe, Georgia, seems to be a natural place to put down roots if you were a young man born and raised in rural Alabama. But the young man in question also graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College and experienced a successful international acting career. The pull of the pastoral versus the vibrancy of city life is a dichotomy Brian Clowdus had to face. His decision was not too difficult.

“After experiencing the gypsy life of a touring actor for four years, I wanted a home, but I also wanted to keep acting,” says Clowdus, a “triple threat.” He is an actor, a director, and a very good businessman.

“I had heard about Serenbe from my sister, and after meeting the Public Relations Director, Tucker Berta, I was impressed. Serenbe is a planned community not far from Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, but if you close your eyes, you would think you were in a modern day Mayberry.”

“It was, in so many ways, the place I’d been waiting for all my life.” Clowdus continues. “A place where I might open a theatre unlike any other—an eco-conscious, eclectic, playhouse that would produce theatre to engage, inspire and challenge.”

The Serenbe Playhouse, with Clowdus as Founder and Artistic Director, celebrated its inaugural season this past summer, although the word “playhouse” is misleading. Three productions, The Jungle Book, John & Jen, and Shakespeare’s R&J, were performed in a variety of outdoor locales around town, including a courtyard area and a forest glen. “Serenbe is all about bridging that gap between indoor and outdoor living,” says Clowdus. “It offers artistic opportunities the city doesn’t have.”

Does the lack of a large city’s energy affect creativity? “As an artist, I am affected by my environment,” he explains. “Living in Serenbe is a zen-like experience. Our creative team can be together in a quiet, relaxed environment, sharing ideas, discussing what went right or wrong with a rehearsal or performance. It’s easier to have a dialogue where you can be quiet and think.”

The open arms of fellow residents are another plus. “Serenbe’s citizens love having actors here. We talk with them on the street. They ask how a play is going, how we are doing. They care.

We are really part of their community.”

Upcoming projects include an Original Solo Works Festival on Labor Day Weekend, a 1930’s style October Fundraiser, and a Holiday event featuring “a jazzed up bunch of divas.” Clowdus is also currently portraying “Miss Texas” in the 14th Street Playhouse premiere production of Pageant.

Midtown Atlanta and Serenbe—two different worlds. Brian Clowdus has the best of both, and in Serenbe he has the serenity to develop his many artistic goals.

REMEMBERING THE ATHENAEUM (1854 TO 1864)

he Athenaeum, Atlanta’s first official theater, opened Tuesday, November, 14, 1854. Cooperation between entrepreneur James Etheldred Williams (18261900) and actor-theater manager William Henry Crisp made it a win/win situation. In 1851, Williams moved from East Tennessee to Atlanta and established a merchant commission operation, which quickly expanded. Four years later, he bought property on Decatur Street between Peachtree and Pryor streets and built a two-story brick warehouse. Finding the first floor space adequate, Williams left the commodious second floor empty.

In April 1854, Crisp’s corps of traveling performers from Savannah, which included his wife Eliza, two daughters and two sons, came to town and played its Photo of James Etheldred Williams (1826regular stint at old Parr’s Hall on Alabama and Whitehall 1900). James is buried in Oakland Cemetery Source: Pioneer Citizens’ History of streets. Although ticket sales were good, Atlanta’s all-purpose Atlanta published 1902. venue was not. When Crisp heard about the unoccupied space in the Athenaeum Building, he asked the owner, “What do you say to a theater?” Williams definitely agreed after Crisp said, “You build the theater and I will lease it from you.”

Workers retrofitted the hall—90 feet long by 50 feet wide—and created a three-side gallery, seating 800. The first production was the ever-popular The Stranger, Benjamin Thompson’s 1820 adaptation of a German play by Friedrich Kotzebue. Crisp, of course, captured the leading role.

Two days later a column in the Atlanta Intelligencer praised the performance and noted the Athenaeum as “a fine establishment that compares favorably with theaters in Charleston, Savannah and Augusta.”

The Civil War actually aided the growth of the little theater on Decatur Street before its demise on November 14, 1864 by Union forces. Although traveling companies seldom stopped during the war the Atlanta Amateurs, a local group staged many benefits for the Confederate soldiers. The Brass Band of the 33d Massachusetts offices of the Georgia State Police.

Volunteers opened the concert with the “Soldiers Chorus” from Gounod’s Faust, a special favorite of President Abraham Lincoln.

After the war Williams served two-terms as Atlanta’s mayor from 1866 to 1868 and Crisp continued to act moving on to Texas where he established resident theaters in Galveston, Houston and San Antonio.

LIVING LEGEND DEBBIE REYNOLDS OPENS FERST CENTER SEASON

F

rom Singin’ in the Rain to Will & Grace, singer and actress Debbie Reynolds has entertained audiences with her beautiful voice, quick humor and glamorous style for over 60 years. She opens the season at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech on September 11 with a festive evening of music and comedy.

Born in 1932 in El Paso, Texas, her family moved to Burbank, Calif., where she was discovered by talent scouts at a beauty pageant at age 16.

Over the next three years she appeared in small roles in several films and toured with the USO, and then in 1951 was cast in Singin’ in the Rain with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor. The movie became one of the greatest film musicals of all time, and launched an incredible career for Debbie Reynolds that continues to this day.

Known as “America’s Sweetheart” for her girl-next-door personality, she has performed on Broadway, starred in television shows and television movies, toured extensively with her own live show, and been a fixture in Las Vegas, performing there since the 1970s. Debbie Reynolds also owns one of the world’s most extensive collections of Hollywood memorabilia, and plans are in the works to open a museum at the Belle Island Resort in Pigeon Forge, TN. While people can often cite their favorite Debbie Reynolds’ role, her own favorite was in the movie The Unsinkable Molly Brown, for which she received an Academy Award Best Actress nomination. Not surprisingly, her favorite music comes from the classics—Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Prima.

The 2010-11 season marks the first that Ferst Center Director George Thompson has programmed in Atlanta. Debbie Reynolds opens a season filled with great music at the Ferst Center, including David Sanborn, Michael Bolton, Melinda Doolittle, Peabo Bryson, Rockapella and Kathy Mattea. Dance and comedy also take center stage with performances by Diavolo, Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company, Doug Varone and Dancers, Paula Poundstone and Margaret Cho. Lee Harper Dancers, Dancing in Concert

On July 31, Americans celebrated our first-ever National Dance Day by coming together to experience the joy of dancing. It’s a message Lee Harper has been preaching and living for years, including the more than three decades she has performed, taught and choreographed in Atlanta. Through her dance school and performing company, along with partnerships with organizations like the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Opera, Miss Harper has taught dance to generations of Atlantans and delighted audiences with her innovative choreography and captivating live performances.

Many of Lee Harper & Dancers’ annual performances have become cherished family traditions. One is the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Family Halloween Concert, featuring Lee Harper’s choreography and dancers. The concert will be held Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. at Symphony Hall.
