I

am happiest with a camera in my hand, I really don’t like sitting in the office. I started photography as a child at about 6 years old. My parents had been given a 35mm Kodak camera as a wedding present and I wanted to see what made it work. So I took it apart with a hammer and a screwdriver. They weren’t very happy and the camera wasn’t happy, it never worked again, and my parents made certain I wasn’t very happy, but I never stopped doing photography from there.

Next time I was allowed to use a camera I was downgraded to a Kodak Instamatic! I was 7 or 8 years old and at dawn a star or a planet, would rise over the horizon each morning for only a few minutes, and it was visible through my bedroom window. So I grabbed the Instamatic, braced it against the window sash to steady it, and shot 2 frames. I thought it was gorgeous and I kept it for years! However to this day my sister 4

will tell you it was a beacon light on a new radio tower… I don’t think so.

While in Collage I was asked to photograph the schools new performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Nights Dream”. And it was love at first click! I had to push the B&W film to 3200 ISO, shoot with the fastest lenses I had, tiptoe in and around chairs and the director. Anticipate actions and moments of emotion onstage and capture all of it, in a single frame. And with this one image, move or convey the audience’s emotions with it.

Which is what I do with the Alliance Theatre when I capture their Theatre Stills and Advertising images. A play like “Jesus Christ Superstar: Gospel” was filled with incredibly powerful and emotions scenes for the entire cast. And we the audience know the story, however when the lepers surround Jesus we were able to see their desperation and his tired frustration. And when you capture that frame and record that perfect moment time really does stands still, and you know you have something, sometimes you don’t know how good the image is but you know you got it, you just know. You can go home now, its not going to get any better that that.

But I never do stop…

A HUGE CELEBRATION OF THEATRE IN ATLANTA!

I

recently had the privilege of sitting down with Producer/Director, Toni Simmons Henson the visionary behind the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival. Here is what she had to say: AL: Tell me about how you first caught theatre bug.

TH: I was raised in Hillside, NJ… in the backyard of “Broadway” just twenty-five cents and a short train ride away. In those days, NYC was our playground. It was nothing to catch a matinee or evening show. At the time, I took it for granted. Although I love living in Atlanta, I miss those days.

AL: Toni, I understand you graduated from Howard University and New York University. Were you actively involved in theatre there?

TH: I actually studied business at Howard and took a theatre course as an elective. At NYU, it was nonprofit management. I didn’t really begin to study theatre until later when I joined the largest network of acting schools in the world, the Helen O’Grady Acting Academy (known as Drama Kids in the US). I purchased

the Princeton, NJ territory and trained to teach and produce under their brand.

AL: Let’s talk about your latest venture, the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival. What made you decide to launch this project?

TH: I wanted to provide a platform for emerging and seasoned artists to produce their work more easily in Atlanta. At 3am early one summer morning, the inspiration came to me. It was so intuitive, I thought it already existed. So I got up to research the idea and the rest is history. This is our 2nd year!

AL: Can you give our audience information on the festival this year?

TH: The festival will be held October 3-6, 2013. Over 300 artists from 18 states and South Africa will perform over 40 plays in 4 days. A huge celebration of theatre in Atlanta!

They’ll be a variety of plays from traditional to urban contemporary to musicals. We’re opening with Janet Hubert and honoring the legendary Pearl Cleage at the Gala.

All events will be held at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center in Decatur.

DIAVOLO OPENS FERST SEASON WITH THRILLS

Also premiering in Atlanta this fall is The Hot Club of San Francisco, one of the most entertaining gypsy jazz bands in the country. In an evening titled Cinema Vivant, the band will accompany three vintage silent films with the music of Django Reinhardt and 1920s Paris.

The French focus takes a decidedly contemporary turn when Sonic Generator, the high-tech music ensemble-in-residence at Georgia Tech, joins forces with members of L’Orchestre National de Lorraine for a concert of innovative French and American contemporary music in November.

eorgia Tech’s Ferst Center Presents 2013-14 season opens with the return of dance company Diavolo, a troupe that reinvents dance, re-imagines theater and redefines thrills. In the new piece Transit Space, Diavolo takes movement, athletics and daring to the extreme. The kinetic new work is inspired by the high-flying movement of skateboarding, and uses ramps and half-pipes as set pieces. The second piece of their Atlanta performance is Fluid Infinities, the final installment of their trilogy L’Espace du Temps.

Based in Los Angeles, Diavolo company members are dancers, gymnasts, actors, athletes and above all, teammates. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Jacques Heim, they collaboratively develop work on oversized surrealistic sets and everyday structures, which creates a sense of daring and risk-taking through dramatic movement that is juxtaposed with human fragility and survival.

The season continues its signature diverse lineup of music and dance with jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, the swing group Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and the Atlanta premiere of pianist Steven Lin. “We are pleased to offer programming that you just don’t see anywhere else in Atlanta,” says 8

COBB ENERGY RAISES THE CURTAIN ON A NEW SEASON

J

azz concerts, comedians, and more have found a home at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This season the myriad of shows will not disappoint.

Jazz Roots: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series is returning to the Centre for its second year of performances. There are five shows in the series, beginning Sept. 25 with A Tribute to Ella, Joe, Basie. Next comes A Night in Rio featuring Brazilian jazz on Oct. 26 followed by Dave Koz’s & Friends Christmas Tour on Dec. 2. The year 2014 features two shows, the first on the sounds and soul of New Orleans and the last highlighting the music of Ray Charles.

For the first time ever, The Rockettes will be performing The Radio City Christmas Spectacular on the Centre’s stage. Radio City is debuting a brand new show featuring new songs and scenes, new sparkling costumes, and a 50-foot LED screen that will enrich and enhance the show for the audience.

The performances will be from Nov. 7-23.

On Oct. 16, Ina Garten: The Barefoot Contessa will be at the Centre. The Food Network star and cookbook author will give insight into the life of the Barefoot Contessa with a night of Q&A. One should expect a deliciously informative night and maybe even a recipe or two.

The Cobb Energy Centre will also be a stop on India.Arie’s new tour “Soulbird Presents a Songversation with India.Arie.” The multi Grammy winner will take to the stage after releasing her new fifth album “Songversation.” The show is Oct. 18.

Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure is a show for the whole family.

Join the favorite Disney Junior characters Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates for a never before seen show! Not only will it be fun for the kids, they will learn the true meaning of being a princess and a hero. There will be four shows from Dec. 14-15.

VISUALIZING THE UNSEEN:

A PHOTOGRAPHER’S JOURNEY

F

or the past five decades, artist Chester Higgins has been using his camera to search for the unseen — “that which is innate within all things and informs the appearance of our world.” “Unseen Spirit,” on view at Atlanta’s Arnika Dawkins Gallery from October 4 through November 29, 2013, exhibits a selection of Higgins’s work from 1968 through 2012. Thirty-one black-and-white and five color photographs celebrate the photographer’s unique vision and feature images from North America, South America, and Africa.

Higgins’s passion for ordinary people and the rituals that enrich our lives are prominent in this exhibition. “It is inside simple moments where I look for windows into larger meaning,” he says. “Art is an expression of the soul that gives visual definition to an experience.” The images in “Unseen Spirit” are intimate, personal scenes in which most of the subjects appear unaware of the camera. Using light, which “energizes and informs everything it touches,” Higgins gives voice to the essence of what he photographs.

“When I’m photographing, I feel time begin to shift between the present, the past, and the future — which is the nature of the Spirit,” he continues. “My challenge is to reveal the

Spirit’s fleeting presence.” Wrestling with issues of memory, place, and identity, Higgins sees his life as a narrative and his photography as its expression. “My art gives visual expression to my personal and collective memories.”

Higgins’s work has culminated in exhibitions worldwide and in numerous books, including Feeling the Spirit: Searching the World for the People of Africa and his biography Echo of the Spirit. Currently he is researching and photographing monuments and other antiquity sites along the River Nile from the 6,000-foot high mountains of Kush (modern-day Ethiopia) through Nubia (Sudan) down to the ancient land of Kemet (Egypt). In this latest project, entitled Before Genesis, Higgins narrates the story of the African beginnings of spirituality, antecedents of the Biblical world.

Theater Emory Theater Emory, a professional theater company-in-residence at Emory, devotes the fall season to experimental explorations of Shakespeare. I am not that I play (gender and disguise in Shakespeare) conceived and directed by Tim McDonough (Sep. 26 – Oct. 6) takes a look at Shakespeare’s five heroines who disguise themselves as men, creating an investigation of identity and confusion, appearance and reality, and the urge to reveal oneself. Theater Emory then delves into the ambitious, timeless world of Macbeth (Nov. 14 – 24), directed

history to throw new light on the dark psychology of Shakespeare bloody drama.

Emory Dance Program This fall, the Emory Dance Program hosts A Moving Exchange, a series of free events that invite students and the Atlanta community to free workshops and classes in yoga, GYROKINESIS®, and dance and music. (Oct. 1 – Nov. 5). The Emory Dance Company performs new works by Emory dance faculty and guests artists November 21-23.

Music at Emory Composer Philip Glass comes to Emory for a residency (Sep. 25 – 27) that includes a public conversation, a free film screening, and the first Candler Concert Series event, An Evening of Chamber Music Featuring Philip Glass and Tim Fain, violin, on September 27 at 8 p.m. Other Candler Concerts this fall include MacArthur “Genius” Chris Thile playing original compositions and Bach transcriptions on the Mandolin (Nov. 2) and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (Nov. 15).

GWINNETT BALLET THEATRE TO OFFER A SEASON OF DANCE DIVERSITY

Duluth, GA. Francisco Serrano hails from the Sarasota School of Cuban Ballet and most recently performed with the Jose Carreno Festival in Sarasota where he was invited to perform several variations. Audiences will be excited to see him again at “Ballet Bits and Contemporary Pieces.” He was a finalist in the New York City YAGP finals.

Walthall states, “Instead of presenting a fairy tale or a classical ballet for October, I wanted to challenge my dancers with different types of movement. ‘Ballet Bits and Classical Pieces’ offers technical and artistic challenges that will help these students grow as dancers and provide audiences with a variety of styles to watch.”

GBT will offer its 16 performance run of “The Nutcracker” December 6th - 22nd.

This annual favorite includes all the holiday trimmings that make it one of the largest and most attended “Nutcrackers” in the Southeast.

Another major production, to be announced, will be presented in late March, 2014.

he 2013-2014 Season will mark the second complete year that Wade Walthall has been at the helm of Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. This non-profit pre-professional company and school has been “nurturing young dancers since 1977,” but Walthall is in the process of putting a new stamp on the organization’s dance personality.

The October 5th and 6th production at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center will be a case in point. Titled “Ballet Bits and Contemporary Pieces,” the program will be a lively mix of choreographic styles. The four works on the program include a neo-classical pas de trois set to music of Delibes and the classical “Sleeping Beauty Pas de Deux.” There is also a contemporary piece set to the music of Stereolab plus an entertaining work performed to vintage music from the Disney films of the 1930’s and 40’s.

Performing the role of the Prince in the “Sleeping Beauty Pas de Deux” will be the Youth American Grand Prix winner from last year’s Southeastern Semifinals, held in

MOS OPENS 25TH SEASON WITH MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR’S MACK WILBERG

T

he Michael O’Neal Singers organization, based in Roswell, is pleased to announce its Silver Anniversary Concert Season.

In celebration of this milestone, the 135-member symphonic chorus will begin the season with a concert featuring Mack Wilberg, of the worldfamous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, in October.

Dr. Wilberg has been involved in artistic leadership of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since 1999, and was appointed Music Director of the Choir in 2008. In addition to his talent as a conductor, he is an accomplished composer and has been writing and arranging music especially suited to large choirs for decades. On October 27th, he will guest-conduct a combined mass choir made up of The Michael O’Neal Singers and the Roswell UMC Sanctuary Choir in a concert of his own compositions. Because Wilberg is kept busy managing his responsibilities with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, his guest appearances are rare.

MOS is delighted to be able to offer the opportunity for Atlanta audiences to experience Dr. Wilberg’s conducting firsthand. The concert is entitled An Afternoon with Mack Wilberg: The Man and His Music and takes place Sunday, October 27 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Roswell United Methodist Church in Historic Roswell.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival Begins New Season
