CAPTURING THE MOMENT OF PERFECTION: ATLANTA DANCE PHOTOGRAPHER SCOTT NILSSON

seemed Scott Nilsson was on track for a promising ballet career. At 14, he was offered a scholarship to the New York City Ballet school. At 17, he was dancing at Indiana University. At 19, he toured with Atlanta Ballet, then moved to NYU—taking ballet at Joffrey, and cast as guest lead for Julliard at Lincoln Center. When a foot malady developed, dancing became unbearable, and even Joffrey’s podiatrist could not help. “I walked away Scott at Work from dance,” says Scott, “I couldn’t bear to watch performances—it was too sad.”

Scott’s NYU roommate asked him to be Photographer’s Assistant at the Studio 54 party for Baryshnikov’s film, Turning Point. Scott loved working as PA, but didn’t see photography as his future—but he did become assistant manager at Studio 54. After Studio 54 closed, Scott moved to Atlanta to be near family, photographing avocationally. Then he met Atlanta dancer/ choreographer, Kristy Dawson, “Kristy took me to the Atlanta Ballet studios; it felt like going home.”

He was re-hooked on dance—and married Kristy in 2001.

Ondine by Scott Nilsson When Nikon released cameras that could shoot dance in dark theatres, Scott shot the day they arrived–as stage photographer for Charleston Ballet Theatre. “For dance photography, the value of a background in dance lies in understanding what is about to occur: capturing a movement is only possible if you can anticipate and recognize it.”

In 2007, renowned dance photographer Keiko Guest invited Scott to join her as partner. In five years working with Keiko, Scott says he learned that, “Beyond technique, all portraiture is about the Kristy at Work by Scott Nilsson relationship and the moment... isn’t life?”

Now solo, Scott has work featured in a national Swan Lake by Scott Nilsson dance publication and showcased at two Atlanta studios, featuring dancers from professional Atlanta companies Georgia Ballet, CityGate and Ballethnic. FERST CENTER DIRECTOR GEORGE THOMPSON TRUSTS CREATIVE PRESENTATION AND A DESIRE TO SHARE

T

he first thing that strikes the ticket purchasing public with the Ferst Center’s upcoming season is variety. From Flamenco to Spyro Gyra, from Brass ensembles to comedy, the 17 entertainment choices offer a full and diverse menu of entertainment, education, and enrichment.

Ferst Center’s Director George Thompson says he does not have a formula for choosing the acts that perform in Georgia Tech’s celebrated 1,159 seat venue which is in the midst of its 20th year. “Selecting programming is similar to buying real estate,” Thompson says. “Only instead of ‘location, location, location,’ it is ‘talent, talent, talent.’”

“Outside of looking for specific genres, it is much more a feeling,” he continues.

“I look for the established artist that we might want to bring back who continues to broaden his or her artistic voice with new material or new collaborations. I seek out the new and upcoming artists that are moving the field forward and sometimes just go with my gut and see or hear something so incredible that I want to share it with our audience.”

Thompson has been on the job at the Ferst Center for three years now, and he has begun putting his own stamp on its programming. He states, “During my tenure, I have chosen to take those primary genres such as jazz and contemporary dance and try to solidify their respective and established audiences, but then develop our series to reflect my particular view of the ever-changing array of artists and the way in which we present them—such as introducing club seating for jazz shows that is reflective of the small nightclubs in which the genre originated.”

The Ferst Center’s 2012-2013 Season opens on Friday, September 21 with “Break With Reality,” a cello and percussion crossover group which touts its unique sound of “cello rock.” With musical influences running from heavy metal to classical and indie rock, this group launches the season with a perfect sense of the quirk, the diversity, and the breadth of the Ferst’s offerings.

Diversity is a major factor in the Ferst’s past success and current plans. For Thompson, diversity comes naturally to the arts. “I believe it is part of the naturally curious nature of artists to look outside of what they are familiar with,” he explains. “I feel that the arts have always been ahead of our times and have welcomed diversity within their ranks. For me, the arts have always existed in a sea of diversity where talent and creativity levels the playing field and the best will rise to the top because of that.”

THE LYRIC CHANGES LANDSCAPE OF MUSICAL THEATRE IN ATLANTA

A

s Atlanta Lyric Theatre gears up to launch its 33rd Annual Season in September with Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, it will also mark the 5th Season of performing at The Strand in Marietta. After 17 seasons at The Ferst Center on the Georgia Tech campus, this venue change was part of a larger strategic restructuring of the company, bringing The Lyric to a whole new level of critical and popular acclaim for its productions. Looking back, Artistic Director and General Manager, Brandt Blocker observes, “When I came to Atlanta in 2007 to assume leadership of the company, there was much less musical theatre being produced by local professional companies. I set out to change that for The Lyric, and I’d like to think our success has had a broader influence in the community that is reflected in the dramatic resurgence of musicals that we see today.”

The Lyric had expanded its repertoire beyond the original limitations of only producing Gilbert and Sullivan (G&S); however it could only afford to do two shows a year (Spring/Fall) of three performances each at The Ferst Center. Implementing a radically improved business model and moving to The Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square in 2008 as the resident musical theatre company, changed all that. The Lyric’s commitment and substantial financial contributions, helped bring this architectural treasure back into active community use with its inaugural, sold-out production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Since then, The Lyric’s subscriber and patron base has grown exponentially, shattering all previous attendance records since the company’s inception in 1980, as word of the exceptional quality of talent and high production values spread.

The Lyric currently produces five to six shows annually, with twelve performances of each, reflecting a broad spectrum ranging from The Sound of Music and Gypsy, to the more challenging content of RENT and Cabaret, as well as offering contemporary favorites like Hairspray, Legally Blonde and Ain’t Misbehavin’, with an occasional nod to its G&S origins in The Mikado or The Pirates of Penzance.

he Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s Education programs provide opportunities for students, educators and parents throughout the Southeast to experience the power of Shakespeare’s language and dramatic vision through play, passion, poetry, active participation and performance using dynamic, languagebased methods.

We do this through interactive, fast-paced Playshops in the classroom; useful, in-depth study guides for all our school programs and performances; in-school and afterschool residencies where the full power of Shakespeare in performance can be experienced by an entire school and summer programs that delve deep into the world of Shakespeare performance and study.

All too often Shakespeare’s heightened language, challenging philosophies and multi-faceted themes overwhelm students. We refuse to accept the too-common belief that Shakespeare is ‘stuffy’ or ‘elitist.’ With an inclusive delivery style which deliberately showcases the clarity and beauty of Shakespeare’s poetry, we routinely make Shakespeare enjoyable and accessible for new audiences who have never ‘gotten’ Shakespeare before.

On the stage, our straightforward aesthetic goes miles toward making the meaning of Shakespeare’s text clear to student audiences. Simply put, and to quote area teachers, when seeing an ASC production, teachers say that “the play they teach is the play their students see.”

In the classroom, our company values and teaching methods give our work the power to change lives. We recognize that for many students, an ASC in-school ‘Playshop’ will be their first encounter with Shakespeare. If we can both engage and entertain during this encounter, we have influenced not only his or her opinion of Shakespeare but also his or her opinion of the theatrical art form in general. Thus, through our accessible and engaging performances and our in-school education programs, we act as an important ‘gateway experience’ for a new generation of theater lovers. This approach has proved extremely popular with young people. More than two-thirds of our audience is under the age of 35. We believe this happens in part because so many young people get to experience our brand of Shakespeare before they can decide Shakespeare is boring!

THE ATLANTA POPS ORCHESTRA

Atlanta POPS Conductor,

Jason Alteri n 1944 French immigrant Albert Coleman accepted the position of Musical Director for WSB Radio in Atlanta, Georgia and set about forming an orchestra that would include Atlanta’s best musicians and be available for radio dates, public concerts and free performances for the benefit of young people and aspiring musicians. Albert established his first Atlanta Pops in 1945 and led that ensemble for 53 years through appearances in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast.

In his long career, Mr. Coleman also served as Music Director for Chet Atkins and Boots Randolf and performed with many of the major symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. Most of the concerts in Atlanta were free to local audiences and drew thousands of attendees at The Fox Theatre and Tower Theatres, Chastain Park and Peachtree City. During his tenure, Albert was responsible for discovering and contributing to the careers of many young artists. His contributions won him the honor of membership in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

When Albert Coleman retired in 1998, the orchestra performed largely selective public and non-public events under local guest conductors. In 2002 the orchestra re-organized with new management and began its association with arts alliances around the Southeast and International producers and promoters. In 2010, musical direction of the orchestra was assumed by its present conductor Dr. Jason D. Altieri, an accomplished conductor of symphony, light opera and pops programs. Jason is only the third conductor in the entire 67 year history of The Atlanta Pops.

The Atlanta Pops has expanded its roll in music making by playing more corporate events, conventions, community concert series, school concerts and clinics. The orchestra will also perform a wider variety of programs that will include themed concerts as well as soloists from its own ranks. We will continue to feature a broad range of guest soloists and new talent. The orchestra organization is a member of several Georgia arts organizations as well as the League of American Orchestras. NBAF: CONNECTING COMMUNITIES WITH FALL PROGRAMMING

presenters of the National Black Arts Festival, renowned worldwide for showcasing the very best of the art and culture of the African Diaspora, is following it’s highly successful summer festival with fall programming. Among NBAF’s fall offerings is a community lecture that serves as a precursor to a theatrical production of Macbeth.

NBAF presents Weyward Macbeth: Intersections of Race and Performance, a lecture presented

by Dr. Ayanna Thompson, Sunday, September 30th, 3:00 PM, at and in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library. Dr. Thompson is Associate Dean of Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of English at Arizona State University. She specializes in Renaissance drama and focuses on issues of race and performance. Weyward Macbeth examines the history of adaptations and reconsiderations of Macbeth, and how contemporary performances of one of the most ubiquitous Shakespearean tragedies have engaged issues of race. NBAF recommends this lecture for anyone who is interested in the issues of race in Shakespeare’s work, and to provide a more insightful experience for those who plan to see NBAF and Georgia Shakespeare’s production of Macbeth. The lecture is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. Nationally renowned director Raelle Myrick-Hodges moves Shakespeare’s tale of murderous ambition from Scotland to the Caribbean. he Youth America Grand Prix, classical ballets’ most prestigious competition for young dancers age 9-19, is coming to Atlanta for its Southeastern Semifinals March 1-3, 2013. Hosting the event will be Gwinnett Ballet Theatre which will be the site of the competition’s master classes, being held in GBT’s 20,000+ square foot facility in Lawrenceville. The competitions will be held in the nearby Gwinnett Performing Arts Center, a part of Gwinnett Center in Duluth.

“The Youth America Grand Prix has been trying to come to the Atlanta Region,” says Shelley King, YAGP’s Director of Internal Affairs. “We are so happy to bring the YAGP experience to the dance community in the Atlanta metro area.”

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is likewise excited about hosting this event which will see hundreds of young dancers from potentially around the world, but mostly from the Southeast, vie for the chance to be invited to New York City for the finals in mid-April, 2013. Dancers do not have to be from the Southeast to participate.

“Hosting the Youth America Grand Prix is an honor for GBT,” says Artistic Director Wade Walthall. “It will bring many excellent teachers, young dancers and their families to Gwinnett and offer GBT a celebratory experience for our first year in our new location.”

GBT’s involvement came as a result of Ms.King’s discovery that Lee Olsen, GBT’s new School Director, was now in the Atlanta area. Ms. Olsen had participated in the YAGP with much success when she owned the Pacific Academy of Dance in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“We were delighted to hear of Ms. Olsen’s move to the Atlanta area and contacted her to congratulate her on her appointment,” Ms. King says. “From there we were able to establish our relationship for the 2013 season.”

Ms. Olsen is likewise excited to help bring YAGP to Atlanta. She states, “YAGP is a wonderful experience for young dancers. They have the opportunity to meet their counterparts from other areas of the US and over 25 countries. They get to see where they stand in relation to their peers, take classes from marvelous teachers, and make friends for life.”
