LIBBY WHITTEMORE, ATLANTA’S CABARET LEGEND

by Whittemore once recorded an aalbum titled “Libby Whittemore Wh hi Is Almost A Legend.”

Thee title was incorrect. Libby Whittemore Whit ttemore is a legend, especially in her home town of Atlanta. hom As she describes it, “a switch flipped inside me in 9th grade, and I knew I wanted insid to ssing. i If there is a showbiz bug, that’s when I got bit.”

Libby’s career is inextricably tied to Atlanta’s ’s cabaret theatre history history.y Atlanta of the 11970’s offered patrons intimate theatre and musical experiences in venues such as The Manhattan Yellow Pages, Showcase Cabaret, and Horizon Dinner Theatre. Libby began her career in these venues, as she puts it, “Lucky to come along in the heyday of cabaret in Atlanta.”

It was during a stint at Showcase Cabaret that she met Tom Edwards, a talent who created two popular shows, “Della’s Diner” and “Tan Shoes and Pink Shoelaces.” Libby gained fame in both of these productions, even venturing to Los Angeles where she met Matt Calloway, a collector of music with “albums up to the ceiling.” Through him, Libby discovered “a whole new world of music,” as she explains it. “Doris Day, Patti Page, singers I had never heard before. I had found ‘the stuff’ I wanted to do. Before, I had sung 50’s, 60’s pop and country. Now I incorporated standards into my song mix.”

Libby continued creating her “legend” from 1981 until 1989 at the Ansley Park area cabaret “Gene and Gabes.” “This is where I honed my craft,” she says. A mix of intimate chat and song became a one-woman signature show.

The cabaret scene changed during the 1990’s. For ten years, there were few venues catering to her specialty, and so Libby refocused on acting. She was seen in 6

numerous television and movie roles, mostly in smaller parts, but she was consistently working. Then, in 1999, Chris Coleman of Actor’s Express contacted her about a cabaret event at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. The show was a huge success, and Libby was inundated with calls and letters, urging her to come back to the stage in a permanent way. And so, “Libby’s Cabaret” was born in 2000.

Located in Buckhead, “Libby’s Cabaret” drew crowds of fans. The experience of running both the show and, eventually, the business was “chilling and thrilling,” according to Libby. After many successful years, it closed on New Year’s Eve, 2006.

But the song plays on. Libby can currently be enjoyed several times a year at Actor’s Express, singing “some of the most beautiful songs ever written,” during special shows at Christmas and in February, April and June.

“I am very, very lucky,” Libby sums up her life so far. “Cabaret is a wonderful art form, and I was so fortunate to be in the right place at the right time in Atlanta. And I am lucky to still be singing.”

Thousands of Libby’s fans will agree that they are the lucky ones.

THEATER OF THE STARS

By Karen Hatchett heater of the Stars is one of the oldest continuously operating theater companies in the country. We are a professional not-for-profit theater in which surpluses from successful seasons go into reserves to support seasons that are not financially successful. We are a community owned company based in Atlanta but with a national reach.

We do two things at Theater of the Stars: We produce shows and we promote shows that are touring through the country. Historically, roughly half of the shows that audiences see on the stage are shows that have been produced by Theater of the Stars and the other half are touring shows direct from Broadway. Sometimes there aren’t enough high quality shows that are touring that fit both our schedule and our needs so we end up producing more. Sometimes it’s the exact opposite, there are many available touring shows so we produce fewer ourselves.

From our perspective both types of shows are rewarding. When you promote a show it is exciting because you end up having access to shows that you would never be able to produce at the same scale or level. Many of our audience members have come to love the big Broadway touring shows.

However, our heart is in producing shows. It takes a unique set of skills to bring together the right team of people to create a show from the ground up and it is quite satisfying to see the finished product. It is more expensive to produce shows than to promote a touring show, and it is riskier because the touring show has a defined cost and you do not know the cost of the produced show until all of the bills are in.

We have this pool of a dozen or so directors, choreographers and designers that we know well, and we select the one best suited to a particular show. We hold auditions in New York and Atlanta and try to get a nice blend of people who have done the show before as well as people who are new to the show. New people give energy to the show that is hard to replace and the experienced people give the style and precision that is hard to replicate. We rehearse for a week or two, conduct a few days of technical rehearsals and then put the show in front of the audience. The result is often memorable and sometimes quite special.

The ACP is a mixed chamber ensemble of strings, winds and piano headed by Artistic A D Director andd pianist Paula l Peace andd including l d lleading d members b of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The ACP performs wonderfully diverse chamber music with superior artistry and technique in a wide variety of interesting venues. Music ranges from the classic to the contemporary and includes new pieces commissioned for the ACP. The Atlanta Chamber Players present their 34th season this year and promise exciting programs of beloved masterpieces and innovative music for the public. The upcoming season will open and close with the fruits of “Rapido! A 14-Day Composition Contest”, sponsored by ACP and The Antinori Foundation. First is the October 4, 2009 concert at the High Museum’s Walter Hill Auditorium, which culminates in performances of four short Finalist compositions. A distinguished panel of guest judges will judge the compositions, and the audience in attendance will choose the audience favorite! First prize will be a commission to expand the winning work for its official world premiere at the final concert of the season April 28, 2010 at the New American Shakespeare Tavern. Also on tap at the Shakespeare Tavern this season (January 26, 2010) will be a fully staged performance of Igor Stravinsky’s brilliant 1918 theatrical masterpiece – L’Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier’s Tale), complete with seven ACP musicians and conductor, plus narrator, actors and dancers from the theater roster. The ACP season also features a concert at the renowned Spivey Hall (February 28, 2010) celebrating Schumann’s bicentennial and a program of “Chamber Music in Sacred Spaces” at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue (April 28, 2010). This performance includes Dmitri Shostakovich’s 1944 Piano Trio in E Minor, considered one of the greatest musical works from the World War II era. This profoundly moving work combines mystery and pathos with war machine rhythms and Jewish melodies.

Composition Contest Culmination!

The Atlanta Chamber Players proudly open their 34th season by presenting the Finals Round of Rapido! A 14-Day Composition Contest on Sunday, October 4, 2009, 3:00 pm at the High Museum’s Walter Hill Auditorium. The ACP will perform short entries by the four Contest Finalist composers, to be judged at the concert by a distinguished panel of guest judges—and the audience in attendance! The first-prize winning composer will be awarded a commission to expand and “finish” the work for premiere performance at the season’s final concert on April 28, 2010. Also on the October 4th program: Beethoven’s masterful 14 Variations for piano trio, followed by works from Atlanta School of Composers Jennifer Higdon and Michael Gandolfi. Higdon’s Southern Harmony string quartet features Southern flavors—from pensive, longing intensity to fiddling and toe tapping rhythms. Gandolfi’s 2009 sextet for winds, strings, piano and percussion combines chamber music with a fascinating 14-minute computer animation.

The Atlanta Shakespeare Company The Atlanta Shakespeare Company is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary of performing Shakespeare (and the classics) at The Shakespeare Tavern. After being closed for a month to tear down their 10 year old stage and to construct a new one, they open in September with As You Like It. This play was rumored to

have opened the newly restored Globe theatre after it had burned down; Shakespeare wrote his famous ‘All the Worlds a Stage’ speech for such an occasion. Their fall season will continue with Richard III and Macbeth in October and November.
